[LegacyUG] SourceWriter

2013-12-14 Thread Kathy Thompson
Is it possible to create my own template for Source Writer?

I want to record English Birth Death & Marriage Registration results in the
format that they are displayed on the FreeBMD website.

Given that England's General Records Office actually refers people to the
FreeBMD website to locate registration districts and other needed details,
I think I should really be sourcing the 100% correctly.

Currently, I have to copy/paste the info from the website, then add in the
extra details needed as to which is the registration district, which is the
volume number, which is the page etc.

If I could create (or have) a SourceWriter based template for these
records, I'd be very happy - especially since 3/4 of my family are English.

Please advise if this is currently possible or if I need to submit a
feature request.

Many thanks

[LegacyUG] Current age if Alive

2013-12-14 Thread Kathy Thompson
Hi all,

Wondering please, is there a way to display on the *Family View* screen,
the years that have elapsed since a person's birth? I know that this is
displayed next to the Born field on the Individual View, but I'd like to be
able to see it on Family View as well.

Cheers

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Search and Legacy

2013-12-14 Thread Paul Gray
Bryan,

I sometimes get frustrated with the quality of FS Family Tree data, but it is
what it is. It will only get cleaned up if we do it, no one else will.

The main reason I correct and merge records of my ancestors is that I want the
data on my ancestors to be correct and widely available for future generations.
I believe Family Search to be the best bet to be a system that is maintained
and available indefinitely. And it is free to all. I am not LDS so I don’t use
any of the ordinance tracking.

It will take time. I’m only looking at direct ancestors (grandparents) for now.
No uncles, aunts, cousins etc. Yet.

I’m in no rush. When it gets overwhelming, I remember the old saying. “How do
you eat an elephant?”. “One bite at a time.”.

But, there are many who feel as you do. Just uncheck options 1.8 and 1.9 and
you won’t even know it’s there.

The FS program is so user unfriendly. No ability to copy/paste for edit fields

I agree

I have Twitter and Blog Posts that I want to record the source for more
accurately, as well as data I've found on Facebook that I want to record

A specific Social Media type of Source Writer would be extremely helpful I

PITA I can understand!

could you have a space in the field thus making Legacy think there is data
in the date field?
Although I just attempted that scenario to see if it would re-create your

RE: [LegacyUG] Export to new Legacy family file, error or bug?

2013-12-14 Thread Dave
Jim,

The latest build (364) corrected my problem exporting to a new Legacy file as
well as to a gedcom and back to a new Legacy file. That all works with no
errors now. But I still get an immediate error 91 when trying to run a
Check/Repair on any of those files.I even get error 91 when running it on
the sample.fdb file so it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with a
database problem.

I uninstalled Legacy 8 completely and reinstalled but am still getting error 91
on every Check/Repair attempt. Any suggestions?

Dave Pointer

Jim,

Exporting all records to a new Legacy file gets an error 3021.
Exporting to a Gedcom file goes OK.Re-importing that Gedcom goes fine until
it starts creating the Family File and then stops with an error 3021.

Dave Pointer

Try the export steps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Customized searches

2013-12-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Brian:

In your Legacy 7, the files you need to copy are located in the following
directory:
C:\Legacy\iSearch\
All the search files end in *.cis

Copy all of the *.cis files and paste them into the following L8 location:

..\user\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\iSearch\

You may want to make a backup of the L8 *.cis files before you copy your
new files into that area.

RE: [LegacyUG] Quick Access Toolbar

2013-12-14 Thread Paul Gray
Ian and Mike,

It would appear that the icons do not scale at all with the size (height) of
the title bar. I fooled around with the height of the ‘Active toolbar” settings
in Windows advanced display options all the way to making the title bar three
times the height that it is by default and the icons remained the same size. I
was able to get them a tiny bit bigger be fooling with the font setting under
‘Design’ within Legacy itself.

Also, the Office 2007 style gives larger icons than the other styles on my
system.

Then how come in legacy 7.5 they are four times the size they are in legacy 8.
It can only scale the original icon and they are too small. I've opened the
icons in an icon editor and they are tiny.

RE: [LegacyUG] FS 'Arrows'

Brian,

OK, I understand why they don't show up on the children's grid list. Actually
though, I wasn't even looking at the kids, I was looking at husband, wife, and
parents. There are no arrows anywhere on the family view screen when child
scrolling list (grid) view is selected.

I can always go to pedigree view for the parents and grandparents, I guess.

This is by design. The Grid is like a spreadsheet display of data from the data
base. There is no way to add extras like the arrow graphics for LFS links like
we can in the children lines of family view.

I do not see any arrows on the pop up children lists in pedigree view either.
Yes they are on the people in the pedigree view but not on the grid lists in

Re: [LegacyUG] Fwd: Legacy V8 - Media Hanging

2013-12-14 Thread 2marion wimps
Hi Cheryl,

The three files with the main problems are:

M - 128 photos - 340 mb
R - 55 photos -66.9 mb
I -32 photos -73.3 mb

The "I" file holds a folder of 6.69 mb with photos for "R"

Not all of the photos in the files are attached to the Media Files so the
size is a little deceiving and there are some photos that are linked from
other files done via Picture Centre.

For some reason the problem doesn't seem quite as bad at times if I open up
the Media Icon from the Individual's Information as opposed to opening the
Icon from the Family View - but it does happen in both ways at times.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - as I said Support have given up and
I am wondering whether I shall have to leave 8 and go back to 7.5.

Thanks,

Marion

RE: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread Judith
Thank you for all the support on uninstalling Legacy7.5. I just went ahead and
deleted 7.5, then I did a registry clean, I hope that solves the problem. This
does seem to be a problem with Legacy uninstall, otherwise Legacyfamilytree.com
would not have a troubleshoot tutorial on site to walk you through the process.

We've had a number of people with uninstalling problems of this kind

own configurations, it is a problem for a number of users even if they form a

RE: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread John B. Lisle

Don, Ron, et al,
As someone who still has Legacy 6 installed... I may not be the proper
person to talk about uninstall processes, but I do think that some of the
enhancements in L8 were to improve these basic system functions. Legacy
had basically not done much to improve how it organized data, did
installs or uninstalls since the Win98 era. Getting this aspect of L8 up
to speed was a major under the cover features of L8.
In fact, for most folks pre-L8, installing the next version of Legacy
effectively uninstalled the older version. The fact that L8 has moved to
a new location in the file system means that the installer cannot just
over-write the old files and the old registry entries.
With L8, it is more complicated.
I do not know what everyone's rush to uninstall L8 is. As a tester, I
have been using L8 now for real genealogy, but I still have not moved all
of my (many) research files to L8. ...not because I do not trust L8,
because I have not had time to rethink how I want to organize my data. L8
just gives me more options.
Further, I run with almost 250 custom Event Definitions. Re-working them
for the new features of L8 takes time I do not have an abundance of.
AND... I like to be able to run similar tools in both versions to assure
myself that no functional regressions have taken place that I did not
expect from the documentation. Yes, we will still find a few.
;-)
With L8, Legacy is now shipping a Remove tool. It is a full fledged clean
Legacy 8 off your PC tool. We used a variety of that during test to
assure when we were testing we had a clean system.
L8 is better. L7 is basically frozen.

Windows 7 may need to be installed/uninstalled by an account with admin

may not have the ‘rights’ to install or delete certain files in
certain directories. That’s not an issue of the program, but sheer

What is tech support supposed to admit.  When the majority of users
have been able to uninstall 7.xx without any issue, I fail to see what
tech support is supposed to admit.  It always amuses me when one out
of X number of users have a problem with an uninstall (or install) and
automatically it is the fault of the developer.  I would venture to
say, if it was a deficiency in the installer/uninstaller the developer is
using, then there would be a much greater percentage of people
complaining about problems.  That does not seem to be the
case.

When you hit uninstall on the Control Panel, it hangs.  If you wait
a while then click again it tells you to wait or disappears.  It may
uninstall some files--certainly the install.log.  But then
uninstalling in Control Panel or in Programs will not work without
install.log.  Re-installing returns install.log, but even then
Control Panel, even uninstall.exe wouldn't work for me and I had to
re-install AGAIN to get install.log back.  Only when I used
unwise.exe and Custom with an install.log present was I able to rid of
the thing.  My guess is that like myself and others, that's what
Judith is up against.  Tech Support doesn't seem to know or admit
this yet.

RE: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread Don Hanson
Ron,

I sort of agree questioning what tech support is supposed to admit. But, your
logic is flawed. Numbers may not tell the story that you assume. Windows 7 may
need to be installed/uninstalled by an account with admin privileges, the same
is true of Windows 8 and 8.1. A limited account may not have the ‘rights’ to
install or delete certain files in certain directories. That’s not an issue of
the program, but sheer number of complaints may not give a clear picture,
either. I don’t know the number of people who for one reason or another run
with full administrator privileges, but it could certainly skew the stats if
UAC or ownership of a file or directory were an issue. A required read for
Business Management majors was ‘How to Lie with Statistics’ Published in 1973,
the cautionary tales still ring true. It’s actually a good read and free at:

We've had a number of people with uninstalling problems of this kind

Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread JV Leavitt
It might be helpful for support to know that this has been a problem for
some. I saw a similar sequence of events when I was uninstalling
version 7.5 -- I think last week. Running the program 'unwise.exe' is
what finished the job for me.

The version 8 program appears to pick up some settings from version 7.5
during it's initial install, but I presume that this would not have a
bearing on what happens when we mess with 7.5 after that.

I afterward re-installed version 7.5, and it works okay. However, since
I am now having trouble getting version 8 LFS to work properly, I'm
thinking it's probably time to let v7.5 go for good. You would, no
doubt, agree, but it has considerable sentimental value.:-)

Rc3 files are the files where legacy stores relationships.

No, the backup will always contained compressed files. What you are

Re: [LegacyUG] Backup files

2013-12-14 Thread Brian/Support
Orinda,

When you click backup on that merge screen Legacy makes a backup for its
own use not a regular backup like File > Backup Family file does. That
working backup file is in a temporary folder and will not be deleted
when you shut down Legacy. It will be used however to restore your file
to the pre-merge state if you decide, before shutting down, to undo the
merge.

After you make the merge you will be told that you can undo the merge
using a choice that will be added to the Edit menu. That undo will use
the temporary backup file to restore your file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread grayscot2
Sherry/Judith

I think her problem is that 7.5 is not uninstalled yet, just 7, unless
I'm wrong about that. Even if she deletes the 7.5 folders and runs cc, my
experience is that it will leave junk that may not affect L8 but will affect
the running of her machine down the line. If she has 7.5, do a re-install of
that to get an install.log, then use unwise.exe to uninstall, custom option, ok
all requests to uninstall all features. Her data files will not be affected,
but never hurts to copy somewhere else.

Judith, after uninstalling Legacy, the c:\Legacy folder remains in order to

changed or added during your use of Legacy is not deleted.

If you're sure that everything is out of the c:\Legacy folder that you want to
save, just delete the folder.

I reinstalled Legacy 7, and was able to uninstall it. However, I still have
Legacy 7.4 in my C:drive with no INSTALL.LOG.FILE, is there a solution. If I
delete it all, all the files under Legacy in the C:drive and then clean the

I don't want to mess up legacy 8, but I can reinstall that if needed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Spacation Problem [was Re: LEGACY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 65]

2013-12-14 Thread Leon Chapman
I would guess this situation was caused by a GEDCOM export that broke the
words with spaces at the end of a line.
In Legacy, when you export, you can go to Customize of a GEDCOM and break
the lines at the end of words and then this word breakup won't occur on
export.

Many of the new programs can correct this if they know the GEDCOM lines has
been broken in the middle of a word.

My suggestion is to re-Export your GEDCOM (or whoever provided it to you)
and make sure they select an option athat doesn't break words at the end of
a line. This should be an option when exporting GEDCOMs. If you cannot do
that, then you have lots of work ahead of you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Spacation Problem [was Re: LEGACY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 65]

2013-12-14 Thread Lee Bruch
After looking at your example, I agree that it could well be a problem with
double spaces.
Explanation:
Words and characters wrap differently with different fonts, views, etc.
What’s at the end of one line in one view or font could be in the middle of a
following line in another view or font.
Hence,
It you have double spaces at the end of a row in one view or font it would not
be apparent, but in another view or font that might shift to the middle of a
word … leaving a strange space in the middle of a word.

Bill,
This is not now, nor was it ever, a Legacy problem. Legacy has bent over
backwards to give users options for importing Gedcoms from other programs
that have implemented note line break rules in different ways.
I have often, when doing a Gedcom import found that I had to use a
different option to be able to import notes without this
problem.
I believe that the RootsWeb WorldConnect Gedcoms are some of the worst
offenders for this issue.

Judith,

You have to have an install.log to get it uninstalled. The only way I know to
get it is to re-install 7.5, then go to the program folder, check to see that
is there and click unwise.exe. If you are given options to uninstall--auto or
custom, choose custom and ok each further uninstall option.

Sherry, Thank you for responding. I now have Legacy8 and would just like to
uninstall Legacy 7.5. As mentioned, the start menu does not have any subfolders
under the Legacy program folder, so no uninstall link is there. In c:Legacy
folder on my hard drive, I have tried the uninstall and get the message
‘INSTALL.LOG.FILE.missing. I went through the instructions on-line at
Legacyfamilytree. There is an uninstaller I can download from another source, I
was hoping there was a solution from Legacy.

Legacy v7.5 is actually an upgrade to v7 so you should have only that version
on your computer.

Go to Start menu > All Programs and use the uninstall in the Legacy folder
there. You should have a folder. If it's not there, then Legacy has already
been uninstalled, although the uninstall does retain the c;\Legacy folder to
protect your data.

There's also an uninstall option in the c:\Legacy folder on your hard drive, as
long as Legacy hasn't already been uninstalled.

I reinstalled Legacy 7, and was able to uninstall it. However, I still have
Legacy 7.4 in my C:drive with no INSTALL.LOG.FILE, is there a solution. If I
delete it all, all the files under Legacy in the C:drive and then clean the
registry, would that do it? Or can I manually delete the Legacy registry
files. I don't want to mess up legacy 8, but I can reinstall that if needed.

Judith,

You have to have an install.log to get it uninstalled. The only way I
know to get it is to re-install 7.5, then go to the program folder, check to
see that is there and click unwise.exe. If you are given options to
uninstall--auto or custom, choose custom and ok each further uninstall option.

Sherry, Thank you for responding. I now have Legacy8 and would just like to
uninstall Legacy 7.5. As mentioned, the start menu does not have any
subfolders under the Legacy program folder, so no uninstall link is there. In
c:Legacy folder on my hard drive, I have tried the uninstall and get the
message ‘INSTALL.LOG.FILE.missing. I went through the instructions on-line at
Legacyfamilytree. There is an uninstaller I can download from another source,
I was hoping there was a solution from Legacy.

RE: [LegacyUG] Spacation Problem [was Re: LEGACY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 65]

2013-12-14 Thread William Boswell
I've had the same problem only I thought it was from exporting from Legacy 8 as
a GEDCOM then importing into Family Tree Maker 2014. I only use FTM to post
online to Ancestry where I noticed a space in the middle of some words in the
source details. I didn't know it was a Legacy problem. I thought and hoped it
was a GEDCOM or FTM problem. Now I'll have to check my sources in Legacy.

In my situation, I noticed the space between two letters in a word is only at
the far right of the sentence on the first line. If it was a short sentence, I
didn't notice it.

My problem is not double spaces, but broken words

Here is an example with the broken words in bold

Myra H. Thielen, age 92, of 1619 Armstrong St., Marinette, passed aw ay on
Saturday, June 3, 2006, after a short battle with cancer. She was bo rn on
November 29, 1913 to the late Benjamin A. and Sophia (Bauknecht) Ha nsen in
Manitowoc. She graduated from Manitowoc High School and from the M anitowoc
County Teacher College. She married Lester F. Thielen on Februa ry 9, 1937 in
Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on May 30, 2000.

She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church and served as Financ ial
Secretary for 10 years, and was a member of the Lydia Circle and the c hurch
choir. She was also a member of the Marinette County Historical Soc iety, the
Marinette Mental Health Assoc., a Past President of the Marinet te Woman's Club
and Easter Seal Society, and a charter member of the Chap ter BK P.E.O.
Sisterhood and a member of the Sons of Norway. She was a mem ber of the walking
club and many bridge clubs.

Myra is survived by six children: Mark (Ruth) Thielen, Peter (Mary) Thiel en
both of Marinette; Paul (Mary Ann) Thielen of Greendale, WI; Jean (Will iam)
Everson of Fond du Lac; Anne Thielen of Hortonville, WI and Karn (Pa ul)
Gregoire of Rhodes, IA; two brothers, Ben (Florence) Hansen of Everet t, WA and
Philip (Sue) Hansen of Merritt Island, FL; many grandchildren a nd
great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly.

In addition to her husband, Lester, three brothers, and a sister preced ed her
in death.

Friends may call at the Thielen Funeral Home 1403 Newberry Ave. Marinet te on
Tuesday, June 6 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Wedne sday, June
7 at 11a.m. at St James Lutheran Church with Pastor Darrel Die rs officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery

It wouldn't be a problem if it were a couple of hundred, but in reality its
probably well over 20,000

But thanks for taking the time to help.

Having been unable to open my family file in the latest build I have had
to send a copy of it in to Support to be repaired. I have a little test
file I created in Legacy 8 and have just opened that and found that the
Info box is working as it should. It will be interesting to see if it
does when I can work my main file again.

Sorry, forgot I was posting to the LUG and not to our tester mailing list. I
normally just tell the LUG that a report has been entered without mentioning
the name of our bug tracking system. Our testers have access to the Mantis
system so they can see what bugs have been recorded before telling us about
problems so for them I do use the name of the tracking system.

I know you don't want to go the GED route on this but you
may have a limited number of other options.

There are a number of manual-labor choices, though, and I've
had experience with those, so if want details, ask.

IME no program will do this correctly and automatically.
One has to either fix the source or the outcome manually.

Re: [LegacyUG] Red numbers

2013-12-14 Thread Brian/Support
I do not know what you mean by uneditable. Give us more information on
what you are doing, what type of media they are etc. What are you trying
to edit, captions etc or something else?

I did some experiments and the red number indicates that there is a
sound file linked to the picture. This is not explained in the help for
the Media Gallery so I will input a problem to have the explanation added.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree View - Pop-Ups

2013-12-14 Thread Brian/Support
There are actually two settings for two different "things" a tool tip
and an Info box. 1.7 controls the pop up of an info box which should
list all the details for the person and a list of their spouse(s) and
children. The small box with the name and lifespan is a tool tip which
is controlled by option 1.6 tool tips.

With Option 1.7 set to open automatically after 8/10 of a second I see
the box I describe along with the tool tip box. Try setting your option
1.7 to must click on name then try clicking on a name in Pedigree View
to see the box. Maybe then when you change back to pop up automatically
it will work as it should.

Re: [LegacyUG] FS 'Arrows'

2013-12-14 Thread Brian/Support
This is by design. The Grid is like a spreadsheet display of data from
the data base. There is no way to add extras like the arrow graphics for
LFS links like we can in the children lines of family view.

I do not see any arrows on the pop up children lists in pedigree view
either. Yes they are on the people in the pedigree view but not on the
grid lists in the pop up.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Export to new Legacy family file, error or bug?

2013-12-14 Thread Brian/Support
Sorry, forgot I was posting to the LUG and not to our tester mailing
list. I normally just tell the LUG that a report has been entered
without mentioning the name of our bug tracking system. Our testers have
access to the Mantis system so they can see what bugs have been recorded
before telling us about problems so for them I do use the name of the
tracking system.

RE: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Legacy 7.5

2013-12-14 Thread grayscot2

TelGen is the owner of the app, not Legacy. The develeloper of the

and will be released within a month. For further information, you can go

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8 & TelGen's Families App

2013-12-14 Thread Kathy Thompson
Just wondering, does Legacy themselves have anything to do with TelGen's
Families app and getting it updated etc?

I ask because I tried to sync my file tonight and was given the message

"Operation Aborted
This database version is not supported"

I was attempting to sync using WiFi.

Can anyone please advise as to if this is a bug or a "wait until TelGen
catches up" or if I've potentially missed a step?

Thanks

Shown in Legacy at 100% it looks just the same as in other photo viewers at
100%.

Unfortunately it isn't a sharp image to start with.

Wm, I don't have trouble with the Legacy viewer with images that are sharp to
begin with but maybe my eye for detail isn't as good as yours.

The System option on the Ribbon is there only in some of the available styles
for the Ribbon. Geoff uses one of those styles.
Click the Design in the upper right and select styles. Select one of the Office
2010 styles or the Windows 7 Scenic style to get the System to show.

The Office 2007 styles and System do not have the System, instead the options
from the System ribbon item are on the big blue L icon.
