Re: [LegacyUG] 1935

You are looking at a 1940 census record. One of the questions is asks for
the 1935 residence. If they lived in the same place as they did in 1940,
the reply is "Same Place".

Hi to my American Legacy Genealogists
Down here in little New Zealand, I have a puzzle you might be able to solve
for me.
When comparing some of my relations with Family Search, I quite often come
across a Residential address "Same Place" This is always for 1935.
I would like someone to please explain why this occurs.

Regards to all
Trevor

Re: [LegacyUG] Can global edits be made in Legacy?

2019-06-28 Thread Bobby Johnson
You might want to ask the question “What are the problems with state
abbreviations?” I, for one would not recommend this action. However, if you
choose to do this, use the master locations list to edit your locations entered
in location fields. For those in notes and other places you would need to use
search and replace.

This is my first post to the mailing list.

I wish to abbreviate place names in my database and I hope to be able to format
my individual changes only once and then apply that change to all instances of
this name in the database.

For instance, if I wish to change "Massachusetts" to "MA" in every instance
that it is found, how would I accomplish this without changing every individual
instance?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [LegacyUG] How do you enter burial place?

I don’t understand why you would do this instead of using the “+” at the right
of the location field in the Individual Info screen and entering the address
where it should go.

I agree, although I do not place it in its own field at the beginning. I.e.:

Spokane – Fairmount Cemetery, Spokane, Washington, USA, rather than:

Fairmount Cemetery, Spokane, Spokane, Washington, USA

This adds a new location, but it is sorted with the other locations in that
city/township.

More specific info about the plot can go in notes, events, burial address or
whatever. Info under the + signs does not show up in many reports. FindAGrave
info only goes in source citations, as far as I’m concerned.

I put the Cemetery address in the Location field. In fact, all my locations are
to the exact street address wherever possible. Why worry about expanding the
location address file? I would expect any modern database and computer to cope
with large files.

I prefer to enter the city where the burial occurs. I put the cemetery in
the burial address found in the + plus sign. Also in the +, burial notes I
put the plot, if available, the Find A Grave memorial number, and anything
else pertinent. I notice a number of people put the cemetery name where the
burial occurs. This just expands the location address file.

OK. The reason I asked what is not being transferred is to see if you were
wanting location info included. Unfortunately locations cannot be used here.
Perhaps you have a space or an error in the URL you entered. Here is another
try at giving you the correct URL

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1890veterans
<http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1890veterans=1=1=3=1=1=ms_db=%5bGivenNames%5d=%5bSurName%5d=_F00027CB|_F00027CB_x=_F00027D8|_F00027D8_x=7t6>

Copy and paste this in the search URL. It works for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Hyphen versus Dash in file names

2016-02-25 Thread Bobby Johnson
Mike, I agree that the problem is not generated by LFT but it has a tremendous
effect on LFT when you restore a backup. The zip program I use is 7-zip.
Don't know if it was installed as a part of Win 8 or a factory installed
program by the computer maker.
Windows is perfectly happy with the dash as you point out but Legacy sure
doesn’t like it when a file name gets changed and in this case the zip/unzip
does change the file name.

Bobby,

I was assuming you'd use the File Renamer to replace the dash with the hyphen
or whichever way it was to re-establish the links.
If you still have the links, yes you need to use the Picture Centre and go one
by one.

[LegacyUG] Hyphen versus Dash in file names

2016-02-24 Thread Bobby Johnson
I have recently been struggling with a problem with media
files. On many occasions I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to
enter data into legacy. The problem I ran into deals with
file names. As an example:
Census - Bradley County, Tennessee - 1940 - John Doe
is the name of a file I would use. The character between
census and Bradley is a hyphen(ascii 45) as opposed to a
dash(ascii 0150). Using Dragon to dictate this file name, I
would use the word dash which would enter a space before and
after the dash. In doing so everything seemed to work fine
including the file sorting. However, when I backed up the
media files and use the backup file to restore them on
another computer I found many media files missing.

I have discovered that when you zip a file with a dash(ascii
0150) and then unzip the file the dash is returned as a
hyphen. Therefore the file name has changed and LFT cannot
find this media file.

This is a warning for anyone who might for any reason do a
backup with a file name that contains a dash.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Media Files in Windows 10

2016-02-16 Thread Bobby Johnson
I recently upgraded my wife's laptop from windows 7 to
windows 10. This computer has Legacy 8.0.0.538 installed.
I restored a backup from my laptop (Windows 8.1 and Legacy
8.0.0.538). Everything worked fine except in the media
area. Some of the media are missing even though they are in
the proper file location. That tells me there must be a
filename problem. An inspection of the missing file names
did not reveal a problem until I went back to the my laptop
and I could see a difference in the length of the "-" used
in some of the file names. Some were ascii character 45 and
some were ascii 150. Changing between 45 and 150 on the
windows 8.1 computer did not matter to Legacy. It still
found the media.
On the windows 10 computer, I changed a missing file name
from ascii 45 to ascii 150 and that media file no longer
showed as missing.
This indicates that Legacy operating under windows 10
interprets the dash and the hyphen differently than Legacy
under other windows OS.
My questions are:
1. Is the above analysis correct?
2. How is the best way to fix this problem?
It appears to me that the only way to correct this is to
bite the bullet and change the missing file names one at a
time in the windows 8.1 computer so this problem will not
appear in subsequent restorations.

Yes! Try this. Open up the sample file so you do not miss up your data file.
Then open the master source list choose any one of the master sources and make
a change. Now when you save it will ask you if you wanted to apply to all
places it has been used or do you want to save it to a new source. When you're
comfortable with this process and you can apply to your main database.

As a refugee from FTM, I'm working hard to understand the Source/Citation
methods of Legacy. So far, so good with one exception.

I like to generate a single citation (such as detailed information from a
census) and use that citation many times for different people and events. Is
there, or is there not, a way in Legacy to revise that citation (to correct a
typo, for example) and have the revision apply to ALL places where the citation
is used? I've looked through a number of postings to this list from past years
and it is still not clear if the feature I'm looking for exists. The
equivalent in FTM would be the two choices to either "copy" or "link" a
citation. With copied citations, you must edit each occurrence. With linked
citations, you can edit any occurrence of the citation and all of them change.

Thanks in advance.

OK! I thought you were referring to the master source. If the problem is in
the citation text then it is change them one at a time or do a search and
replace by choosing the Citation-text field and carefully each instance of a
find and accept or reject the change.

Another method would be to copy the source to the clipboard and make the change
to the clipboard and then remove the current source from each occurrence and
replace it with the clipboard source.

I should think that when a “Sr.” dies, the “Jr.” merely drops the use of the
name “Jr.”. Besides, in most cases, the use of the Jr. and Sr. suffixes are
merely nicknames. In many cases of the use of II and III, those are real legal
names.

Now for a mind-blowing consideration…..there are many cases in which a child
was given the legal first name of “Junior” such as “Junior Smith”. Now what
happens when Junior Smith has a son and names him “Junior Smith”. Do we end up
with a Junior, Sr. and a Junior, Jr.? :)

I am trying to fine tune my Customized Search from Legacy for Ancestry.com

When you are doing a search from an Ancestry page and the Spouse Surname is
part of the search request, the resulting URL contains
 =[SpouseSurname]

but if I add that info my Legacy Customized search, It doesnt seem to
recognized the [SpouseSurname] as a variable?

Tag the new entries on the old computer and export the tagged to a Legacy file.
Now import this Legacy file into the file on the new computer.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How to combine files

Hi,

I recently purchased a new computer and copied my most recent family file to it
and then added some information.

Then, without thinking I used my old computer and added some more info to the
file (the one I had copied to the new computer)-- I added a few new people plus
I made changes in notes and events of a few people who were already in.

Now, how do I get the new info on my old computer added to the file on my new
computer?? Is there an easy way to do that???

When you click on the “Customize Searches…” button and then click on “Add” you
will see a list of terms that you can use in generating a search string.
[SpouseSurname} is not one of them.

I would recommend that you create a Legacy file and NOT a gedcom. A gedcom
will not work as well as a Legacy file.

I would do a search for "Modified Date " after what ever date you started
adding again on the old computer.

Tag those records on Tag1 (making sure you first cleared the Tag1)

Then create a gedcom export for all Tag1 Records.

Import that gedcom into your new file.

Double check for any potential duplicates.

Hope that helps

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Census event vs source

2015-10-20 Thread Bobby Johnson
My earlier comment was intended to be a "tongue in cheek" remark. I don't
consider a book or the census as an event. They are records that provide the
facts about events and are therefore sources.
If I use the census to indicate a person resided in a town, county, state
according to the census and also recorded the census as an event then in a time
line you will see something like this:

Residence in 1910
Census 1910
Residence in 1920
Census 1920
...
Who would want to see this?

Guess we will never agree across the board on this subject'

[LegacyUG] Residence Event sentence override error

I am using windows 8.1 and LFT 8.0.509.

When I use the following in the sentence override of the
residence event:

[FirstName] lived [~inPlace] with [HisHer] wife
[WifeFirstName] and their children in [Date].

it results in the following:

Asa lived in , Lawrence County, PA, USA with his wife Asa
and their children in 22 Jun 1852.

Has this been discussed here or has anyone else noticed this

OK here's the thing: I need a descendant report from
 ancestor X. I am
certain there is some simple box to check or button to click
that I am overlooking here, but I can't select any options on
the Report Option screen. They just seem like they don't
recognize the check. They don't look greyed out, but they
 apparently are.

I have done jillions of reports in the past. Has the old brain
lost too many neurons at last, or is their a bug I don't know
 about?

Mike,

What I mean is that, when I generate a surname list showing only the surname
UNKNOWN, there will be a long list of people in the surname list that follow
the following format:

UNKNOWN, John Thomas

UNKNOWN, Michael James

etc.

etc.

Then in addition to these persons with unknown surnames, there will be a few
people with KNOWN surnames and KNOWN given names, in alphabetical order, some
before the UNKNOWN surnames and some after the UNKNOWN surnames. In my case,
there are something like 354 people with surnames listed as UNKNOWN, and three
people listed before them alphabetically: e.g.:

BAKER, Susan A.

COMSTOCK, Mary Elizabeth

THOMAS, Edward

UNKNOWN, John Thomas

UNKNOWN, Michael James

etc.

etc.

Hope this explains what is happening.

I believe that this will help me to remember that the children existed and to

As long as you are consistent with how many fields you use for each country
your Master Location List will sort the countries together properly. For
example, I use 4 fields for US, I use 3 for Germany, I use 4 for Poland and I
use 6 for France. I have no problem with sorting. Where you run into
problems is when you are not consistent within a country.

Also, addresses and names of building do not belong in the location field.
These belong in the address field.

[LegacyUG] Voice Recognition Software

Happy new year everybody!!!

I have recently become a fan of voice recognition software.
Especially after viewing the recent webinar on this subject.
At the time of the webinar I had had Dragon Naturally

little practice, I am now using it to enter data into Legacy
almost exclusively.

I've just completed making a short video (about 20 minutes)
demonstrating how I use Dragon with Legacy. If you are
interested in viewing this you may download it at the
following link:

Please don't expect this to be a Geoff Rasmussen quality
video, but perhaps you can get some ideas of how it can be
used.

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Voice Recognition Software

 Happy new year everybody!!!

I have recently become a fan of voice recognition software.
Especially after viewing the recent webinar on this subject.
At the time of the webinar I had had Dragon Naturally
Speaking installed on my computer for about 3 weeks. With
a little practice, I am now using it to enter data into Legacy
 almost exclusively.

I've just completed making a short video (about 20 minutes)
demonstrating how I use Dragon with Legacy. If you are
interested in viewing this you may download it at the
 following link:

 https://www.dropbox.com/s/508bulqmn2a8p6f/LFT-

Please don't expect this to be a Geoff Rasmussen quality
video, but perhaps you can get some ideas of how it can be
 used.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tiny tafel

2014-12-26 Thread Bobby Johnson
Paula,

In the early days of computerized genealogy a tiny tafel was used to match one
family with another. It uses a combination of surnames and Soundex along with
some dates to match one family tree to another. See the following Wikipedia

You need to include a copy of the Legacy program on the cd so it can be

RE: [LegacyUG] Update Problem

2014-12-05 Thread Bobby Johnson
Michelle and Paul,

I have my default media file paths set as indicated in my email and as Paul has
surmised. Immediately upon update the/Smith and the/Johnson in the family files
is missing and ends up with media/. It seems that when I update the default
path to my media is reset to the installation default. I don't believe this
should happen since 6.2 has the default path labeled as a family file (FF).
That is why I have the/Smith and/Johnson etc. added to the end of the default
path setting. And Paul you are correct, the only thing I need to do is to reset
the default path after upgrading. Not that big a problem but I don't believe it
should be happening this way.

If I left the media path set as the default when installed and linked all the
media using that as the default I'm sure that my media would be there after
updating even though they are in subfolders. However there are places within
legacy that uses the default path to find your media files. For example, when I
need to cite a source and click on the cite a source button, legacy opens
the windows browser to the default path and makes it easier to find your master
sources. So you wind up with a choice of relinking your media after each update
or living with additional steps to find your sources when working with them.

Thanks for responding.

Bobby

Bobby,

No, I don't think that should be happening.

After the update, what path is in 6.2? From your note, I assume that pre-update
in your Smith family file, 6.2 said C:.Media/Smith. What does it say
immediately post update? And, then do I understand that in order to 'find' your
media again, all you need to do is update 6.2, you don't need to do any
relinking?

I always thought that 6.2 had absolutely nothing to do with existing links. The
only time I thought it mattered was 1) when you are adding new media it would
send you to that folder first to look for the media item (although you navigate
to any other folder once in the add media dialogue), or if you were using the
media re-linker (although I will say nothing about that because I have never
used it).

Hi again Bobby,

It’s interesting that your system behaves differently than mine. In your case,
the value in 6.2 is changed to a new value, in mine the value (which is not the
default) remains as previously set. (This is what you want as well, you are
quite happy to retain your 6.2 settings).

I’m wondering if the reason might be how the update is done. I am doing it from
the “Legacy Home” tab updates box on the right where it shows you installed
version, current version and gives you the option to update. Is that how you
are updating, or are you doing it some other way? It’s pure speculation, but
can’t one download the update from Legacy’s website and then install. Maybe
that method does more a ‘basic’ or “clean” install and sets parameters such as
6.2 to defaults?

There is an option on the Legacy Home tab under Options

If that's selected, it *should* show the update when you
open Legacy but sometimes it doesn't happen right away.
Also, if you leave Legacy running for a long time, it doesn't
 necessarily update quickly.

You can click on the Updates heading to check as well.

RE: [LegacyUG] TMG looking for new home Legacy vs RootsMagic 7

2014-12-02 Thread Bobby Johnson
Ancestry.com does not have a color capability for its family trees. Here is
what one of its users came up with to overcome this lack of capability. In the
individual picture area, she used a blank colored background for a picture.
This is a method that could be used in Legacy. One could make the preferred
picture a colored background and it would be visible on the family view and the
pedigree view.

The limitation I see here would be searching. There is no capability to search
using the preferred picture as a parameter

I personally would not like this method because I would prefer to see a
headshot of the individual on the family view and pedigree view instead of a
color blotch. However, it might work for someone who is primarily interested in
showing DNA proven lineages.

Okay please bear with me on these color questions, as my mind is trained in TMG
:) We now have to think outside the box. I have bought both Legacy and Roots
Magic 7 and playing with the features.

Below CE Wood said I can use 8 colors. If I pick a person/ancestor and color
code him, say red, will it go down that particular line and color code all the
descendents? (Even if I had to do manually, I’d do it. It would be worth it)
The system isn’t going to know if it’s my ancestor, is it? That’s all I need
to do, just pick 8 people and give them a color. What am I missing in doing
this function. If I can do this, then all is good. I actually needed 9 colors
but I can adjust a line.

If that can be done, where are the instructions to do the coloring? I tried to
do color a person but nothing happened. I tried it on a couple of people but
they all stayed the same color blue, that system used when you input a person.
Or would it not work because it wasn’t my ancestor line but again how is the
computer going to know who my ancestor is anyways.

I do like Legacy a bit more over RM7 because it operates/look more like Windows.

OMG all this binary talk, I’m lost on that. I’d probably have to attend a
class to figure that one out.

Hopefully someone can explain this to me, as to why I can’t just pick 8 people.

Tks again

Cheri,

In the upper right corner of the children area in Family View is a small icon.
Click on this icon and in the window that opens click on the child status
arrow. In the drop down select twin. If twin is not there add it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Date Last Edited in Legacy 8.0.0.454

2014-11-10 Thread Bobby Johnson
It is really not too difficult to understand why this needs to be fixed. As Ron
pointed out there is no safety net. One wrong button and the information is
corrupted. There are currently 3 ways to exit the individual information
window. (1) the red X. (2) save. (3) cancel. Either method 1 or method 2 will
change the modified date. At some point you will use the wrong method. When you
do, there is no recovery except to restore a backup file and lose any
information you have added since that backup.

I really don't understand why people want to change the
way the modified date works. With all the Windows files it is
the same (except for some database files). If you open the
file, don't make any changes and save close the files, the old
file date stays, but if you say: save, even if you didn't make
any changes, the file date will change to the current date
and time. And that's the way the modified date works.

RE: [LegacyUG] Document Genetic Matches

2014-10-22 Thread Bobby Johnson
Ron, I'm finding it difficult to imagine how your system actually works. It
seems to be a rather long and labor-intensive method to accomplish this task.
As I said in my original post, I'm looking to design a fact for each of the
individuals in the lineage between the two donors using that fact to display
the exact path of the match. I am running out of tag numbers to use your method
requires three available tag numbers. This is fine and one would have to find a
method to manage tag numbers so he can use this method. It does provide some
food for thought and I am going to look at it some more.

Thanks much for your response.

I track DNA participants in my Legacy database. What I have found useful is to
create master sources for each testing company like: Ancestry DNA
Participant; FTDNA Participant; SMGF Participant; etc. Then I cite the
appropriate DNA master source for each individual that has been tested. Once
all participants have the DNA master sources linked, then I use Show List for
those master sources and set Tag1. Next I set Tag2 for all descendants of a
given ancestor. Finally, I search for everyone that has Tag1 and Tag2. Those
are the descendants that share DNA with the common ancestor.

If I want to show a chart of how all the DNA participants are descended from
the common ancestor, I use Tag1 to build a Focus Group consisting of every
participant and his ancestry. Then use the SearchFindMiscellaneousFocus
Group to find all the ancestors of all the participants. Tag3 the results.
Now those with Tag2 and Tag3 are the lines you want for the chart of DNA
descendants.

more of an announcement. I chose Personal Knowledge because I did not
interview the first time grandmother when she called but copied the information

Perhaps a template Announcement should be added.

I have an ancestor from early Virginia, Timothy Redding. He is found in early
records along with others, Francis, John, William, Arthur, etc.
Their relationship is not named and there is no clue as to what it may be. I
know that I can put those other guys in as unlinked people, but they will not
show up when I study my data and am trying to fit clues together as to who
Timothy's parents or brothers are. Am I correct in thinking that it is not
possible to have the other Redding men to show up in family view or
individual chart (which is what I use to do my major work and thought.) If
they are in as 'unlinked? I seldom think to go to the list of unlinked
 people to
compare with data I am discovering as I research.

 Wondering how others handle this?

Oh thank you so much, Ron, for thinking of us users!

There are so many websites that do not, and it is incredibly frustrating and
time-consuming when RINs are renumbered. Not only must we users now search for
a person each time we use that website, but we must search our own database(s)
and change each source citation that used URLs from that website.

Having several hundred thousand source citations (not all the offending
websites, DG), my life is no longer long enough to do that, so I change only
those for persons I am reviewing or adding and notice the offending website in
the sources. That is enough of a pain.

In 50 years, I have accumulated many sources, more now because primary and
truly reliable secondary sources (IPMs, CP, etc.) are available on the
internet. More URLs, though..

 Jay,

Why do you renumber the RINs.

In over 24 years I have never renumbered my RINs. Indeed to do so would
change the URLs for all my pedigree web pages which uses them as the file
name, hence rendering useless any bookmarks made by visitors and totally
 messing up search engine returns.

Sorry but I do not agree with your implication that do to do is good practice.

RE: [LegacyUG] Child Gender

2014-05-26 Thread Bobby Johnson
In version 8 you may add a child of unknown gender by right clicking in the
children area of Family view. You may select “Add a child of unknown gender”
or “Add a sibling of unknown gender” depending on where you right clicked.

Is it possible to add a child without indicating gender? I know this couple
had a child but that is all I know right now. I would like to add the child to
the database but it looks like I must choose male or female.

[LegacyUG] Update Problems

2014-05-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
After viewing several posts on this list indicating a new update was
available, I clicked on the Legacy Home tab. Here it indicated that 414
was the latest build. This is the second time a new update was not been
correctly identified here. By clicking on the Update header above the
message that I have the latest build the Check for Updates window opened.
I was able to update from there without going to the Update web page and
downloading the file.
After completing the update I had over 6000 media files missing. The
relinker quickly fixed this problem.
The Startup family was also changed.
I can't seem to get a handle on what might have caused these problems.
Anyone have suggestions as to how to avoid this in the future?
Bobby

RE: [LegacyUG] Update Problems

2014-05-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
Cathy,
The update was on the server but did not trigger my program that it was
available. This shouldn't happen no matter where the program is installed or
where the family file is located. The program and data are in the default
locations and 1.2 is set to open the last family file opened. The strange
thing is that this is the second time it has happened to me and not in
consecutive updates. The last time was early in the version 8 history. If no
one else has this problem it must be with my setup. Everything is in the
default locations and nothing strange about my data. Can't put my finger on
what could be causing this.
Thanks for your ideas.

Bobby

 Hi Bobby,

To see a new update on the Legacy Home Tab you have to have started Legacy
after the update is on the server.

The other problems you had seem very strange.

Are you sure it opened the same file you'd been working on and not another
 copy?

 Where is the program installed?
 Where is your file?
What setting do you have at Option 1.2?

 Cathy
