Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Reports - are enhancements possible?

2023-09-26 Thread Ian Thomas
Cathy, thanks. That worked OK.

[lifespan] is the available term - if using Abt in the Born or Died, it will
appear, so I get Descendants of Alexander McCully Snr (Abt 1795-1868) for those
actual b. and d. which in my database are as Abt 1795 and 26 May 1868

The extra parameter needs to be set for "cover page" and for the "page headers"

Ian,

Click the Help button on the screen where you can edit the Header. It
will have a section or I think it's a link to the Report Title codes

The Help really is helpful.

I would like to add a very simple enhancement to my Descendant Book
Report - at the very top pages

The Heading Layout has a section "Title at the top of Page 1"  where
the template is   Descendants of [*FullName*]

So, it generates *Descendants of David Thomas* - when within a
_Descendant view_ in Legacy interface, I have set a descendants of N
generations for that individual.

It would be nice to be able to enhance this to include the parameters
[*Birth Date*]  and  [*Death Date*] after the selected top-level
person's name.

Can I do that?

It would be nice to display *Descendants of David Thomas (Abt 1810 - 4
Jun 1887)*

.. and to have it nicely centred and placed on the pages, by
configuring the _Heading Layout_ within the designer.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Reports - configuration is a bit
convoluted, but excellent display

I have been creating some Descendant Book Reports and it appears to
have some peculiarities, which I thought were minor problems.

Specifically, I created a report with 5 generations, and with its Name
Index, 2-column, it was 23 pages in length.

It has a Table of Contents, and that has the very helpful First
Generation, Second Generation,   ..., Fifth Generation, and  Name
Index  page numbers.

(these were on pages 1,3,9,16,20, and 22)

For some reason, I was not getting a page number on any of the 23
pages. The Page Setup |  Headings and Page Numbers tab  seems to be
the place to set this to give a centred page number at the bottom.

Getting to the report settings for this is in itself a little
confusing: the Report Options tab at the base of the
configuration/settings needs to be selected, but it is the right
margin area of that - the non-coloured, narrow section with a box   [
Page Headers, Footers... ]  which must be clicked.

(a bit hard to describe - needs some step-by-step pictures of the
report settings)

Then, the Page Number Position section of that page requires attention
to select Bottom Centre.

However, it is a very comprehensive method for displaying the Legacy
data in a way that "ordinary people" can understand. I regard it as an
excellent means to explain the connections of generations.

My answer to that is print the PDF as a PDF, leaving out the blank

But I had been hoping it was possible to not have them in the first place.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Book OR Descendant Narrative Book - Source Citation Issue

2022-04-20 Thread Larry Lachance
I've recently updated to the latest version of LFT (9.0.0.414) for the first
time in over 2 years. Uncertain if it's MY issue or a software issue or not
but.

When printing either a Descendant Book OR a Descendant Narrative Book -
using the father of the family as the "descendants of" I've encountered the
following issue:

IF, in the formatting of the "Report Options" - under the "Sources" tab, I
check "Print Source Citations" AND I check "As footnotes" - the report
prints the correct NUMBER of children (like 3 or 4 or 5 of them) BUT it
prints the names of each using just the name and information for THE SPOUSE
for each of the children.

As an example, if John Smith and Mary Jones had 3 children, the report lists
"children from this marriage" as:

Mary born on etc.

Mary born on etc.

Mary born on etc.

THEN If I change the Sources tab to checking "Print Source Citations" and I
check "As endnotes after each generation" OR as "endnotes at the end of the
book", then the list of children is now correct.

As an example, John Smith and Mary Jones had 3 children, the report now
lists the children correctly as:

Herman born on etc.

Elijah born on etc.

Sally born on etc.

Hoping this explanation makes sense as I would like to fix it although, if I
have to, I can live with the source citations at the end of the generation
as opposed to footnotes on each page.

Thanks yet again for help from everyone.

I add the same line with the surnames added, underscored;

But the descendants from Johanne are listed like this:

And descendants from Johanne's sister Kirsten Marie:

It seems like the rules are different for Hans Olsen's son and his

If I remember the rule correctly a surname is only used when it is
different from that in the previous generation. If each generation is
including a surname they are probably different due to females who took
the husband's surname or perhaps a change in surname spelling from one

Check your report to see if I am correct.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant book

2017-12-07 Thread Anne Hildrum
I would advise you to joiun the forum on Legacynorsk:
http://www.legacynorsk.com/phpbb3/

Basically what you add is what gets out. If you enter a country it will be
listed. If you write Norge, that is what will get out.

In the register over places you can have a long address and a short address, so
if you want to add a country name, but not having it in reports

you can select to use the short name for reports.

A Descennat report is always the descendants of one person therefore just your
name will be there. Don't think there is any way to change that

other than edit the report.

You said you have ticked the pictures to be implemented, but have you also
ticked add pictures in the file? That is if you are using Legacy9.

That is the second last line on teh same side you say to implement the pictures.

Anne

Subject: [LegacyUG] Descendant book

Hi, I am new with Legacy 9, norwegian ver., and have some questions:

I live in Norway, and hope the country name can be changed to Norge in the
system, so all names are changed. And I also hope to have the possibility to
suppress the country name, as I feel this in most cases to be unnecessary
information.

I have made a descendant book for me and my wife, but have found no way to put
her name besides my name in the front page and later. I regard her as extremely
important in this context.

I made it as PDF-document, but I am not satisfied with the layout and want to
edit it. But the Adobe Acrobat is very expensive.

I tried the RTF-way, and ticked the pictures to be implemented in the document,
but there were no pictures.

Do anyone have a solution for me ?

Thanks in advance, Andreas Søli

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant book

2017-12-07 Thread Cathy Pinner

Andreas,

Whether the Master Location list has Norway or Norge depends on your
data entry.
You can edit locations in the Master Location list. Each location has a
long form and a short form. You can choose to use the short form for
reports. So you might want to have , Norge at the end of your long form
location and omit it from the Short form. If you don't edit a location,
the long and the short form are the same.

You can edit the locations one by one but that gets very tedious.

So you can use Search - Search and Replace
Before you use it, make a backup in case in learning to use it you make
an error.

Where to find: Lists - Location (that's the long form)
Find: , Norway
Replace with: , Norge
note I've included the preceding comma - you may or may not need this to
avoid making changes to other words.

Read the rest of the Search and Replace screen. You only want to replace
found text.

Do a similar Search and Replace on Lists - Location Short but this time
replace with nothing in order to remove the country.

The Descendant Book. Note there is a Title button on the first screen
that opens when you choose Descendant Book. You can put exactly what you
want there or use the codes for titles. They should be in the Help file
accessed from that screen. The help has a link to Report Title options.
It's useful to know that [CR] will move to the next line so you get good
spacing.

If the editing you want to do is not very much so that pages wouldn't be
changed you can edit the PDF. Microsoft Office can open and allow
editing of PDFs. However if the pages change you'd need to update the
Table of Contents and the Index yourself.

The RTF can embed the pictures. Click the Report Options button then the
pictures tab and choose that option there.
They're not nicely placed or sized in the RTF so they need adjusting but
they're there. Also you can add more pictures to the RTF. You generate
the Index and Table of Content when you've finished editing. Legacy
embeds the necessary information in the file. It uses particular Heading
levels for the Table of Content. The Index information is in Hidden
text. If you can turn on to see the hidden text you can add more index
entries if you follow the pattern.

Hope that helps.
Cathy

Margaret,

Make sure in the Report Options button - Include tab you've checked
Other Spouses otherwise only one is included. Why it means parents of
the descendancy line is a mystery but it does. Why would they be left
out when their children are descendants?

It doesn't mean other spouses of the person who married into the line.

Or maybe they live in particular states/locations that you visit every 2-3
years? AND you've entered Residence events for them? I would look into Focus
Groups, too. I've never figured them out fully, but I think you could set one
up and then identify who you want to have in it. Bit of work to set up, but
then you can run reports on the focus group to your heart's content. You can
use Cathy's suggestions to build one, then add/delete individuals. --Paula

2013-11-14 Thread Brian/Support
Are you perhaps confusing the person's RIN number with their marriage
MRIN? The MRIN does not appear on the name list so the numbers you see
there are their RINs. The numbers on the Marriage List MRIN column are
the MRINs you need for the report.

RE: [LegacyUG] descendant book report

2013-11-13 Thread Ron Ferguson
Judy,

Will you please clarify; you say multiple starting points and then go on to
use the Descendant Book Report.

Do you mean the Lines of Multiple Descent Report, which would seem to be the
one which you need? If so are you saying that on the line asking for the MRINs
it is only accepting 3?

If the latter please try the Reset button on the report page.

I cannot check myself until next week, but I know that in the past I have had 6
or 7 starting points. Perhaps someone else can help before then.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Book Report-line back to starting person

2012-05-22 Thread Julie Miller, CG
I am making a descendant book. I want to show the line back to the starting
person but the RFT report will not show it. I think that this problem was fixed
back in April 2010 but it doesn't seem to be working again. I have tried
multiple times. Sometimes it gives me several names (not the correct ones) but
mostly it just doesn't show the line of descent at all.

The same problem does not occur when saving to PDF but I need the RFT so that I
can use Word.

Is there something I'm missing? I have the latest build and have clicked Show
Line back to starting person and Show generation numbers.

How much free space is there on your hard drive?

John

I wonder if I am the only one with this problem and would enjoy your
 feedback, please?

I did a Descendant book Report on grandfather Alex C. and it was 77 pages.
I did the same for great-grandfather John and it was 98 pages.
I did the same for great-great-grandfather Alex M. and it was 489 pages.
I did the same for great-great-great grandfather David andit stopped on
page 363 with an eror message:
 Error deleting file
 C:\Legacy\Temp\LG-3LDB
 Error 53 File not found
Do you want to try again?

I said no and it continued on to page 530 and stopped again with same
error message. I said no again and it ended!!

I want to know why it is hanging up. I have been doing this for about 10
years and never had this issue. I usually start back two more generations
further and end up with a printed book of over 2500 pages. I love Legacy
for what I have been able to do with it and next year I would like to do a
real book for the library. In the past I have printed these books,
filled four notebooks and shared with cousins who have shared with me.
But it has become too expensive for me to continue this practice. (Most
cousins are interested in their history but are not genealogists with a
 good program like Legacy!!)

This worked for me last October and ever since February 2nd of this year
it has been giving me error messages. I think it could be a glitch in
7.5 - a programming error. Not mine!! What do y'all think?

I began to think I was going doolally-tap because it seemed as though no

 show.

Eventually, I Reset (for the second time) and left *everything* at its
default and Wha-hey! It worked. So in order to see where I was going
wrong before I began to eliminate options once at a time. I deselected
Index, TOC and Title Page - no problems. Then I deselected Print Source
citations and that's when the rot set in.

With Source Citations selected I get a line back to starting person.
With no Sources I get no line back.

That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Can other LUGgers confirm
 this behaviour?

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book

Lloyd,

I can't imagine why, may just be a problem with you using html (which btw is
not allowed) whilst I convert to Plain Text. This is from what I received:

Lloyd,

Please see below.

Ron Ferguson

Yes it does. Click on sources, citations only and it will print the upline.

I do not consider that to be working. In my view working means operating as
it should. It wasn't.

As for downloading from the update facility, I tried it a couple of versions
back and it would only download up to 8% and then would not go any further,
no matter how long I waited for it to continue.

Then something was wrong. I would have stopped and started again. From what
you said I thought you were on dial-up (you maybe, of course!). When
installing/updating, any program, not just Legacy, will appear to stop
whilst a big chunk of code is installed, often more than once, and the more
one omits to update then the more big chunks there will be.

If it is taking 4hrs it sounds as though you are doing a full download. If
you use the Update facility under the Legacy Home Tab (on your program) it
should only download and install the bits you need.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Book

I see where the Option, (Show line back to starting person) when
making a Descendant Book,
(Modified Register) bug has not been fixed. In the last version, it
would not show or print and I posted a message to LUG about it.
Someone replied that it was a known bug and would be fixed in this version.
Does anyone know when we can get a fix? I used to print a lot of
Books, but since this bug showed up in the last version I could not
print any because I need to show the line back to my starting person
in order for people to know where they are in the book.

Try resetting the report options - click on the Reset button in the

I began to think I was going doolally-tap because it seemed as though no
matter what I tried I couldn't get the Line back to starting person to

I turned off printing sources and I get extra blank pages inserted, the line
back has people in it that are not descendants in the line but from a branch of
that line. Turn on print sources and everything prints as it should. I tried

If it is taking 4hrs it sounds as though you are doing a full download. If you

Yes. Having updated to .21 and still getting no line back I
re-started Legacy: still no line back. Read your post about
resetting, reset and then selected my preferred range of options
(which did not include Sources): still no line back. Reset again
and made NO changes to Legacy's complete set of default options:
line back. Then deselected TOC, Index and Title page: line back.
Then deselected Print Source citations: no line back.

I then tried switching on and off Source Citations several times
(making no other changes) and every time the line back appeared only
 when Source Citations were printed.

I just tried it again now. I selected the Descendant Modified
Register Report and used the Reset button. Then deselected TOC,
Index and Title page and deselected Print Source citations. There
was no line back printed. I then selected Print Source citations and
 the line back was printed.

Note that I have made NO changes to any of the default settings other
than the 4 I have specifically mentioned - TOC, Index, Title Page and
 Sources.

Jenny,

I really need more time to look at this. Reset, and simply ran the report,
modified register, Sources as Endnotes, and not Sources, did not touch the
Index settings. With Sources selected all seemed well, but when Soucres
unselected, the line was there but it was rubbish, comprising a mixture of
descendants and the odd ancestor. It really needs a good looking at.

I agree that it does not seem to be correct when no Sources, but exactly how
I cannot tell without a lot of work. Sherry, I see that you are following
this thread, can you have a look at yours please?

Yes it does. Click on sources, citations only and it will print the upline.

As for downloading from the update facility, I tried it a couple of

8% is where the downloading actually starts! Before that, the process
has checked a few items and concluded that they are up to date. It then
goes on to the program itself.

NOTE: The percentage complete indication ONLY UPDATES WHEN A FILE HAS
BEEN SUCCESSFULLY DOWNLOADED. Thus, when Legacy.exe completes, the 8%
will jump to 46%.

A few other items will be checked giving instantaneous gratification
that more has been done. Then we start on the help file, Legacy.chm.
Again, it will appear to stall. But it doesn't.

Ruth,

You can, but if you’ve created sources in SourceWriter, they’ll all be
converted to Basic. If you email Support, we can send you specific
instructions to go back to Legacy v6. The previous builds of Legacy v7 aren’t
available. It requires creating a gedcom in v7, uninstalling, deleting
specific files which remain after the uninstall, installing the previous
version and then importing the gedcom.

BTW, the issue with the Descendants report has already been reported to the
programmers and they’re working on it.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Well, I feel like Legacy has become like Toyota. What once was a good
car/genealogy program has become a problem to drive/use. I just don't
understand how enhancing software like adding Family Search capabilities can
somehow erase coding in a Descendent Book Report. I wish someone - anyone -
from Millennia would just once apologize for messing up.

So how do I go back to the version prior to this one? I am hardbinding my
daughter's paternal family story. It will be done once and never again. She
wants to know how Per Nelson is related to her, a Peterson, so I need to have
the line back to the starting person.

Luckily, then, I only use Basic to create sources. I'm manually entering the
ancestor names and generations numbers for this project and have asked for
instructions on how to go back to Version 6. I hope the transfer to ver. 6 goes
smoothly, because over 30,000 names is a lot of names to view to make sure the
gedcom went through correctly. Thanks for your help.

  Hello,

I have been using Legacy for quite some time now and have created descendant
books from the program. However, the sorting of the individuals is not how I
would like them to appear in the book and so have in the past spend countless
DAYS reworking the individuals around. I would like to know if there is a way
to resort the individuals to get them to appear in a different format please.

What I would like is to see the option of having everyone sorted as they are
on the Descendant chart with their full information and notes. My Descendant
Chart alone is 19 pages for this ancestral couple. The subsequent book starts
out at over 500 pages in it's current versioning.

I'm trying to get another book together rather quickly before mid-week to get
to the printer before I leave to visit relatives on New Year's Day in a
different state than I am in. I started working on the current version of this
book on Friday and I am still working on sorting through all of the descendants
of the 1st child of this ancestral couple yet.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  Thank you,
  Peggy

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book - sorting

2009-12-29 Thread P Perry
Hi Ron,

Thanks for responding to my query. I currently have 8 generations of
descendants listed in my database. If I were to navigate to someone in,
say, the 2nd generation from the index and click on the FAMILY tab, I would
see that person, spouse and their children listed. From this screen, I
click on the DESCENDANT tab and this shows a staggered generation view.

I see the 2nd generation person I searched for followed by their first child
and then their first grandchild and any subsequent firsts further down the
line and then it comes back to display the original person's second child
followed by that person's first child, etc etc.

The book format (from what I have seen) will list everyone in generational
order (all the 2nd generation folks then all the 3rd generation folks, etc
etc). I am trying to find a way to show the generations in staggered view
as explained in the above paragraph.

Sometimes a visual helps better than words please see the following
link: http://www.icgs-wi.org/peggy/Descendant%20view.jpg

IF there is a way to get this look with all the people information in
descendant book layout - I would LOVE to know how to do this. I started
editing the usual view on Friday and I am still working on sorting people
around. I'm only on child 2 of 7! I had hope to have the basics completed
and slightly formatted and to a printer before tomorrow to take with me to
visit my elderly aunt this weekend out of state. I don't think that is
going to happen. :-) The book is currently at 758 pages without table of
contents or the index, just family info and the source citations.

Thanks for any input or ideas on this. I really appreciate them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book - sorting

2009-12-29 Thread Ron Ferguson
Thanks for the URL, Peggy, I was looking at a slightly different chart. I
cannot see how this can be done using Legacy alone. Personally I use Open
Office for moving around chunks of text, as you are doing, and leave it to
sort out the indexes. I don't know Word, but I guess it will do something
similar.

Although, having said that, and I can also see why you may wish to change
the Descendant Report layout, personally I wouldn't do it, as this is the
standard layout for this type of report.

Good luck, and I hope you get there.
