RE: [LegacyUG] citing land entry files

2015-05-19 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
When opening an Individual Information window, the cursor will automatically
appear in the next empty vitals field. Many times people have a birth date
entered but no christening or baptism date entered, thus the cursor will appear
in that empty field. So what you are seeing is a normal function. If there is a
date in the christening field, but no death date, then you’d be seeing the
cursor in the death field.

Hi Cathy, I did not think that it mattered where you were when you added the
source.

Whenever I open an Individual’s Information dialog box, the cursor is blinking
in the christening field. That’s all I meant by that.

I just went back into my ancestor where I added the land entry source. It’s
there – in the christening field. I tried to edit the source, and I got the
runtime error message I cited. When I tried to close it, I got the dialog box
I was referring to – “Edit Mater Source Definition – Christening.” When I
close this box, I am bounced out of Legacy altogether.

It may sound as if I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’ve added many sources in
the past without incident. I don’t know what is happening here. I checked
out Error 9, and I have the current build date (26 Feb 2015) and version
(8.0.0.473).

I consider myself fairly computer adept, and have not had issues with Legacy in
the past. I feel at a loss as to how to proceed.

Hi Barton,
It doesn't matter where you are before you access the Add Master Source button.
I'm usually using the Source Clipboard, click on the Change Master Source link
to access the Master Source List and realise I haven't already made a source
for this data and so click the Add button.
But I could be on the Assigned Sources for an Individual screen accessed by
clicking the books icon which is on all entry screens and on Family View. Then
click the Add a New Source button instead of the Cite a Master Source.

If unsure if you are adding a Source correctly, check out the Videos available
on Sourcing. There are a number and some of them are free including Sources
and Citations Made Simple, Standard, and Powerful
http://www.familytreewebinars.com/legacy_videos.php

I have no idea what you mean by a christening diaog box or what you mean by the
default position of the cursor.

Re errors. Have you discovered the website troubleshooting help?
Check it out and see if any of the Error 9 fixes help.
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com
Help Centre
Troubleshooting Help.

Instead of staying with this source that is causing you so much trouble, you
might try entering a different source and check that is error free. Also, it's
quite a good idea to practice with the Sample database rather than with your
own file. That can avoid errors that may have crept into your file because you
haven't run File Maintenance - Check/Repair which is needed to keep a database
healthy.

Clicking on Alt Tab simultaneously brings up the menu you cited, as well
as the run-time error '9' menu.  The move/close menu appears on top of

Brian, I continue to have issues.  Here is what I did.  First, I removed
the existing source I had created which was showing up in the
Christening field.  Then, I deleted the Master Source altogether so I
could start from scratch.  Then, I created an event using Residence.

It is not clear to me where I should go to add the source for this
event.  I do not find any instruction on adding Sources to Events in

screen while I am in the Individual's Information dialog box.  This is
what I did.  Now in the Assigned Sources dialog box, I clicked on Add a
New Source.  I entered 11.23 to find the EE section I want, and selected
homestead files basic format.  I filled out all the fields.  I went to
repository and clicked on the ... to add the repository.  I filled out
the fields and clicked Save.  At this point I hear a ding and I am
taken back to the Step 2. Fill in the fields below dialog box  My
screen is frozen and when I click Alt I get the Run-time error '9':
Subscript out of range message.  Clicking OK at this point bounces me
out of Legacy.  I checked this error as Cathy advised and it says to
make sure you have the most recent build and version of Legacy, which I
do.

When I go back into Legacy and go to my ancestor for this event, I see
the event listed in the Events/Facts field.  When I go into my Master

create the new source for the land entry file I had purged all unused
sources from the list).  The new source I had started creating is not

Instead of staying with this source that is causing you so much trouble,
you might try entering a different source and check that is error free.
Also, it's quite a good idea to practice with the Sample database rather
than with your own file. That can avoid errors that may have crept into
your file because you haven't run File Maintenance - Check/Repair which
is needed to keep a database healthy.

Since neither Cathy nor I can duplicate your problem there is no fix
needed. The repository selection button simply opens the current list
of repositories in your file. Legacy has no pre-defined repository
data. If you do not see any list you have not created any repositories
 for that file.

If your screen freezes when your try to add, the screen to add a
repository may be behind the Legacy screen. This happens occasionally.
To try and bring the hidden screen to the front try tapping the Alt key.

If that does not work try using ALT-Spacebar to call up the windows
Screen manipulation menu. If the hidden screen is off the visible
monitor that menu will pop up on an edge of the monitor depending on
where the hidden screen is located. Select move from the menu then use
your arrow keys to move the screen unto the visible monitor area. For
example if the menu was on the left edge use the right arrow to move
the screen from left to right.

You could also try adding NARA as a Repository from the Master List
View Master Lists Address Lists Repository This will also cause
your freeze problem if the off the visible screen
problem exists since the Add button on the Master Repository Address
list opens the same screen as adding from the source input.

It doesn't matter where you are before you access the Add Master Source button.
I'm usually using the Source Clipboard, click on the Change Master Source link

But I could be on the Assigned Sources for an Individual screen accessed by

You can type the section number into the What kind of source do you

already amongst your repositories, you can, of course, select. I'm
not getting a freeze - which doesn't mean you aren't - just that
we may have different settings somewhere.

Some templates have the repository hard-wired as there is only
one archive for the information - eg US Census - but other
templates are more general and can be used for sources from
different repositories - eg Land Sources from another country.

 Hi Barton,

There's a virtually hidden feature for finding the template
 corresponding to EE.

You can type the section number into the What kind of source do you
 want to cite field.

Hi Cathy, so are you choosing the same template I did (Section 11.23 ...
Land and Property records Homestead files Basic format)?  Is the
Repository line not blank, and when you click on the arrow, there are no
options?  I clicked on the + to add NARA, and I freeze.  But that's
not happening to you?  What would the setting difference be that you
referred to?

I'll await submitting a bug report in case we're not on the same page
here and you're doing something different than what I'm doing.  I
appreciate your help.

Re the Repository, you can add any repository from the Source Info tab

or the Repository Tab (Click Add).  If NARA is already amongst your
