[LIB] L2 and Japanese Windows

2005-08-01 Thread Keith Brown
Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 18:57:10 -0400
From: Keith Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: L2 and Japanese Windows

Hi everyone,

This may be a tired topic to many of you, but I'm looking for a little help.

I'm currently looking to by a L2 from someone who said the machine has
Japanese Windows ME installed on it. He also said he has tried,
unsuccessfully, to install an English version on it, too.

The machine comes with an external CD drive, which is not a Toshiba brand
and therefore cannot boot from that drive, the guy said.

I am by no means a computer expert and have little knowledge or expertise in
this field. But I don't read Japanese. I can barely read English.

It's a good deal, this machine. I don't want to let it go just because I
can't figure out how to install the software. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Keith.

I have been looking for a solution. But this means, since I get a hundred
emails a day, that I would have 100 on this machine and a hundred duplicates
on that machine, right?

And the problem with that is? Its better than having 50 on each and never
having the email you want where you want it ...

Why not set up a seperate email address for home then forward anything you need
there to the new account?

Looks like someone on this list has a computer that is spoofing MY email

FWIW - I too have received a number of such bounced emails; although as it is

Subject: Re: [LIB] List problem?

I think the only list problem is that there has been extensive discussion of
focal length of lenses. Unless you figure the fact that you were reading the
messages on a Libretto enough to keep it relevant to Librettos.

:-)

Surely the reason people are using these lenses is to make all PCs look as small
as the Libretto? Does it work on your skirts as well Pres? :-)

I agree with Pres though, can we move away from cameras and back to Librettos?
My head hurts trying to understand the focal length of a pinhole and my Libretto
can't handle all these OT messages and I don't want to have to unscribble.

Pres, you're missing the obvious!!!
You know how a null modem cable has the two wires crossed over?
So, I reckon the bit you're overlooking is that you need to
bounce the IR signal from one to the other *via a mirror*...

You're just making it complicated!

All you need to do is turn one of the Libs up-side-down :-)

My three PA2503Us each have a sticker to the left of the connector. The

980921AP, 981110AP which I translate as September 1, 1998, September 21,

also with the same sticker, #980706BS.

In my 50CT/810 (really a 50CT/6.4G yes it's a 9.5mm model HDD) :-

PA2497U R DC10.8V 1200mAh XM0018P01 970514AS - 14 May 1997?

Vidar,

Are you using IE v5.0 or v5.5? I'm just remembering that I installed v5.0

problems. It was months ago, and my poor memory can't come up with wat the

I'm using IE version 5.00.213.10031c on Win 95 4.00.950b.

It's a good job PCs like numbers :-)

Actually I'm surfing very little with my Libretto. I'm only able to
connect it with an old analog modem (which means pay-by-second) and I
mainly use my desktop machine with a cable connection.

Evening scott,

have a new (used) l70, that has alot of data on it and is win 95
any problem wiping the drive and putting win 98 on it? or just putting
win98

I upgraded my L50 to Win 98 without any real problems.

Ensure you keep a copy, or download new copies, of drivers e.g. display
(graphics) and floppy disc.

With the 50 (and presumably the 70) you will need to link up (network) to
another PC to access the CD (unless of course you have a PCMCIA or parallel port
drive; in which case you'll need the driver for this on a bootable floppy disc).

Good luck - Keith

 Hi Libretites :-)

Enjoy reading the list but it seems most folk don't
know how to snip their replies and the
last digest was 85% quotes :-(

PLEASE, please can you all try to quote only the
relevant parts of the original text? It would make
the digest a lot more readable.

Hi neil,

 Second thought...

Why was exiting on an X security policy permission? On a text install, it

Pass. Are you sure hd.img uses text install?

should never have got there - or at least, not until the video should test
after setting up - in which case, ignore the test and use the XF86Config
file I posted a few days ago for Robbert once the install completes.

If I could get into Linux, I'd be able to edit the XF86Config, but at the moment
I can't boot Linux at all! :-(

Hi neil,

 Assuming fat32 (and M7.1 - I don't have a 7.0 to hand) - use rawrite to
build a boot floppy disk using .../images/hd.img and boot from that as
 'text'.

Better, but not much :-)

Exits with :-

error opening security policy file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy

Try :-

mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
mode con codepage select=850
keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys

in Autoexec

and :-

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)

I have many boot floppies, but I'm worrying if Libretto can boot from
its PCMCIA floppy? When I boot it from hard drive and select command

normal?... In Windows, floppy drive is available.

Can you boot from one of these floppies? If not you will need to go into
Control panel in Windows and setup so the Libretto boots to A: first.
There should be a Toshiba System icon; if not you can download from

So, I badly need help and advices from experts, what can I do in this
situation and how do I re-install Windows on Libretto

You should be OK copying CD to HDD via parallel port as you suggested
(although a PCMCIA NIC would be quicker (G)).

After you have copied all of the CD, delete or (rename and hide) C:\windows
and run setup. If install complains of existing OS attrib sys files and delete,
after you ensure you have a boot floppy to fall-back on of course.

Good luck - Keith

I recently installed Win 98 on my 50CT, but cheated as the drive was in
