RE: Director MX & Azeri (Latin) on a Windows machine

2004-10-04 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi guys,

Unfortunately we're still on D9, and we are unlikely to upgrade at this stage.
Furthermore, there's a fair bit of re-engineering required in order to convert all
text members to Flash sprites.

What we've decided to do is offer a non-Director playback. In our (Director-based)
authoring software, we enter the Azeri text, but with the offending characters
converted to Unicode. Then we publish the course in HTML+TIME, and the browser
displays everything gracefully.

It would have been neater to offer the Director-based playback, but this seems to be
the fastest workaround for this project.

Thanks for your help!

RE: Director MX & Azeri (Latin) on a Windows machine

2004-10-01 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi guys,

First of all thanks for the suggestions - much appreciated!

Roymeo, you're correct - the target audience will be Azeri, and although I suspect the
machines will be in English they should be able t odisplay Azeri.

I have tried the suggestions that you and Daniel mentioned, but to no avail!

You see, the problem with Azerbaijian is the lack of consistency: Some speak Russian
(USSR legacy) and others Azeri. Azeri itself is either written in Cyrillic or Latin.

And to add insult to injury, there doesn't seem to be any consistency in the language
codes, therefore in non-Unicode some fonts work better than others!

I had a look on the Macromedia website, but the best recommendation they have is to
use Flash sprites... Not so straightforward a change!

FWIW, Azeri Cyrillic works a treat. Only the Latin one seems to be the problem.

Regards,

... a confused Alex ...

RE: Director MX & Azeri (Latin) on a Windows machine

2004-09-29 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi Daniel,

We've got the problem in the office with Win2000 SP4 and XP SP1 & SP2.

I think the target machines are XP, but I'm not sure (no control over it).

The only time where I've seen it working was on Win2000, where we copied the text from
Word and pasted it in Flash MX2004 Pro - without any changes!

I've tinkered with the options in XP, but to no avail... It feels as though the
problem comes from here though! Unless my spider-senses are a bit off, of course...

Director MX & Azeri (Latin) on a Windows machine

2004-09-28 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi all,

We've got this project where we have to do localized versions of our
software, one of them accepting Russian, and the other Azeri Latin.

The former works, we are able to copy and paste Russian text and it
works no problem.
The latter doesn't; for those who don't know, Azeri Latin is one of
these alphabets that contains characters that you won't find anywhere
else; eg the upside down e called "Schwa". We tried a couple of things,
but that Schwa character is never recognised when pasted and you get a ?
Instead.

Would somebody have a clue of the best way to get Azeri Latin working?

Thanks!

RE: [x-post] A Common Question - Director & XML/Web Services

2004-06-09 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi everybody,

First of all thanks to everyone for replying to my email - this is the first
stepping stone for a big overhaul of all our products, and there's a lot for
me to take in!

Second of all, apologies for not replying to your emails, as per usual
something urgent cropped up so I'm off research for now :( - I was not
ignoring you!

Finally, I am currently using DMX, and it is unlikely for us to move to
MX2004 for the time being. I quite like the XML Parser of the Flash Asset
Xtra, so I think I'll go for that when I can get back to it.

Thanks again,

[x-post] A Common Question - Director & XML/Web Services

2004-06-04 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi all,

We currently have a few application made with Director MX & INM's V12
database.

As there is more pressure for centralising data (in a cost effective
manner), we need to look at using XML/Web Services for a better
interoperability, whilst keeping the Director front-end.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any resource on where to get started on
the Director end! I've read a few articles about XML, and that proves to be
already a pain with DMX's XML parser... I recall an alternative solution but
can't find a reference to it :(

I know that some of you guys have already made the step, and I was wondering
if you had any pointers / reading material that would help me to get started
on this task?

TIA

Hi all,

Apologies to those who have received this email from another list...

I need to find a way to read the following data in a PowerPoint
presentation: Title, author, subject, comments.
(that's the sort of thing you find when right-clicking the file in Windows

I've looked at DirectOS and BuddyAPI, but I don't see anything what would
help me. Has anybody come across the same needs?

RE: Convert string to list

2004-05-06 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi Rodrigo,

You're probably better off getting rid of these quotes first, e.g.
Repeat with myItem = 1 to mainList.count
mainList[myItem] = value(mainList[myItem])
End repeat

Or something like that.
Then you can do mainList[3][1] = 12

Does anybody know how to turn it off???

HI,

I personally don't do anything fancy with PP files (open them and wait for
them to close), but if you want a decent control over them you should try
this Xtra:

I tried it once with view to get it and it seemed pretty seamless
(unfortunately the strategy of the software changed and it was no longer
required).

RE: Upgrade operating system question.

2003-11-26 Thread Alexandre Cop
I've never been a big fan of upgrading Osen, I tend to perform clean
installs, to be on the safe side.

If you want to upgrade from 98, there are 2 things to bear in mind:
- Remove third party software (whenever possible) prior to upgrade, and make
sure you have the 2K/XP update ready
- Drivers were a horrible thing in 98, so where possible apply the same rule
as above

There's a website somewhere that helps you upgrading from 98, doing a Google
search would be a good idea.

RE: [X-Post] DMX & ActiveX problem

Hi again,

It seems that panic is over! When I got in this morning I devided to test
things a bit further, and I realised that even with my last version in 8.5
it wasn't working either!

So I reinstalled the ocx, and now seem to be working - I guess it must have
become corrupted or unregistered.

Thanks everybody for their suggestions!

[X-Post] DMX & ActiveX problem

2003-10-20 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi all,

Well I'm having more "let's try a new Director version" fun!
I have been using this OCX for a long time, which allows me to 'talk' to a
set of infrared keypads. Unfortunately, DMX doesn't seem to like it! I have
re-imported the OCX just in case, but it didn't make a difference...

I normally talk to it via the sprite it is in - say psKeypad = sprite(45)
And when I try to initialise it with a psKeypad.init(), it returns a
"Property not found" error!

I guess it's because it's not part of the sprite properties per se, but why
has it stopped working? Has the way that sprites are referenced changed?

If you've got an idea, please let me know, otherwise I'll have to revert to
8.5 :(

Thanks,

Well I would, if we had DirMX :¬(
The other thing is that it affects one of our authoring software, so other
than appending this to the FAQ I can't guarantee that they'll do the right

Oh and to top it up one of the large companies we're working with is still
on QT5 and won't upgrade until next year (hopefully).

[X-Post] QuickTime and path length on Windows rant!

2003-10-08 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi all,

This one has been driving us crazy for a long time, and I can't seem to find
any reference to it on the web... Here it goes!!

Machine: Win 2000 & XP, QT 6.3, Dir 8.5.1 & MX
Problem: If a QuickTime movie (regardless of the codec) has an overall path
length greater than 128 characters then it won't play from Director. It will
play with QuickTime Player though.

By overall path length I mean e.g. ("C:\Program
FilesContent\QuickTimeMovie.mov").chars.count
> 128

Whilst experimenting, I exported the movie with the MPEG4 codec - no avail.
Then I change the file extension from *.mov to *.mp4, and D8.5.1 wouldn't
import it. DMX however WOULD, and played it with QuickTime!!!

I also tried feeding Director with the shortfilename (which is less than 128
chars), but that didn't work either :(

This is really a pain for us, sometimes you'll get a client calling saying
that they created a course and it wouldn't work, and eventually you figure
out that it's the issue mentioned above... Grrr!

If anybody has got a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Regards,

Alexandre Cop.

Protecting external assets

2003-02-07 Thread Alexandre Cop
Hi all,

I'm sure this question has been around before.

One of our products is using external assets (pictures, audio, video, Flash)
and links to them when opening the course. We are currently protecting them
by encrypting the file, so that it cannot be reused by unlicensed parties.
However, on larger files it has an impact on performance, and we're looking
into other ways to achieve this.

One theory I have in mind is splitting the file in 2, and keep one part in a
cast or a database field and the other on the disk. Problem is, how can I
tell Director to concatenate those 2 parts into 1, and tell him the type of
the file/cast?

Another is to use a binary xtra and tamper with the header of the file,
however that requires the file to be written unprotected somewhere on the
disk, not great and it doesn't help CD-ROM delivery.

Any suggestions are welcome, I'm running dry!

Thanks,

... Alex ...

Would you know if nested director movies get a similar support?
I have a project where a Director movie has to be displayed in a MIAW,
because if I put it on the stage all the 'off stage' elements are displayed.
As a result, I have to keep my app full screen, which is a bit annoying...

Regards,

Alexandre Cop.

RE: email from Director

2002-08-01 Thread Alexandre Cop

I had to look into something similar a while back, the best approach for me
was to use the DirectEmail Xtra :

Ken,

You are the man! I had always wondered how I could communicate between 2
elements of the dialog box.

Thanks a bunch, you made my day!!

MUI Xtra

2002-07-29 Thread Alexandre Cop

Hey guys,

I'm working on a dialog box with a 'Browse' button and a field that displays
the file chosen (Using Rav's MUI Maker). Thing is, I don't know how to
update field after I have clicked the 'Browse' button and retrieved the
value!

Can anybody help, or is this a lost cause? I'm using Dir 851 (Win).

Thanks!

It's good to see that amongst those who still work at MACR there is still
enthusiasm!

Hi Colin,

Good to see a familiar face! How's life been treating you?

I wouldn't know what to think of that either, as I fail to see how Director
can fit into the whole suite. Any suggestions?

Are there any MM Developers left lurking here or at hopper-ex?

Thanks for the feedback!

What's the story in terms of Director development?

2002-07-24 Thread Alexandre Cop

Hi guys,

I've been away from the Director world (well in terms of mailing lists and
websites) for a while, and I'm trying to catch with the latest happenings.

So what's this story about the MX studio? I see that Director is put in the
same boat as Authorware. Has anybody heard of an upcoming Director MX
through the grapevine, or can we expect a slow death?

Thanks!
