Re: directory structure inside table

2002-08-21 Thread stefan

Well I worked out using

\begin{tabbing}

...

\end{tabbing}

But now the question is: can I use tabbing mode inside table ???
In lyx 1.2.0 SPARC Solaris 9 is not working.

[BUG] Opening version 1.1.6 documents with LyX 1.2.1

2002-08-21 Thread Roberto Hernandez

I've found what appears to be a bug. It's related to labels. If a
document saved with LyX version 1.1.6fix4 has labels that include
underscores _, then the label name is changed when opened with LyX
version 1.2.1, causing unresolved references.

Label Changed to
name_of_label name_{o}f_{l}abel
second_label second_{l}abel

Hope that helps.

1st paragraph indentation in french

2002-08-21 Thread Christophe GIAUME

Hi all,

First I want to thank all the guys who work on LyX for their great work.

LyX does not indent the first paragraph of a section. The second and the
following are well indented. This is the correct behavior in english.
But in french, all paragraphs including the first one have to be
indented.

It's only a display problem in LyX, the resulting LaTeX file has no
special indentation command, so all paragraphs are indented in the final
dvi.

CG

problem with dia - pstricks

2002-08-21 Thread Nirmal Govind

I'm trying to export a dia diagram to .tex pstricks format and including it
in a LyX file. I'm getting an error from Latex that says that I'm missing
some $ signs (for math mode) and some } and { ... This is a figure I had in
dia earlier that I was able to export to .tex and view in Lyx successfully.
I made some changes to this figure and now when I try exporting to .tex and
view win Lyx, I get this error from Latex. Any ideas on what's going on? I
have \usepackage{pstricks} in my preamble. I'm using Lyx 1.2.0 on cygwin.

Re: xforms question, (Trouble getting lyx 1.2.1 working...)

2002-08-21 Thread Pierre Marc Dumuid

I'm having trouble getting lyx 1.2.1 working,

I'm generally an rpm person as I get scared of building binaries,
(having to find the libraries etc, and knowing how to configure stuff)

I downloaded the rpm's for lyx 1.2.1, but it all seems different from
the release of lyx 1.2.0.

With the release of lyx 1.2.0, two options where given for RH users,
those with RH7.2 and those with 7.3, and two files where supplied:

lyx-1.2.0-1.i386.rpm
lyx-1.2.0-1rh73-xforms089.i386.rpm.

I upgraded to RH7.3, and hence installed lyx-1.2.0-1rh73-xforms089.i386.rpm.

(I think I had to install xforms-0.89-1.i386.rpm with it)

When trying to update to the 1.2.1 version of lyx, there is only one rpm
on the ftp site:

  lyx-1.2.1-1.i386.rpm

and when I did sudo rpm -ih lyx-1.2.1-1.i386.rpm, I got:

error: failed dependencies:
 libforms.so.0.88 is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
 libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1

It seems as if the rpm was compiled using the old xforms (.88)
I don't know why libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is there. I've got:

libstdc++-2.96-112 and libstdc++-3.1-7

which provide me with libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so.

I've also tried to compile the srpm, but I didn't know where to get this
file, (I found a .src.rpm, but not a .srpm, are they the same??) When I
tried doing

sudo rpm --rebuild lyx-1.2.1-1.src.rpm

I got the following response:

lyx-1.2.1-1.src.rpm: No such file or directory

Could someone help me out, (or could RPM's be released similar to
lyx-1.2.0-1rh73-xforms089.i386.rpm).

Thanks,
Pierre

Hi all,

Just some observations. At the moment, I'm a little flummoxed as to what
to try.

I've run reconfigure, and 1.2.1 still converts *some* .eps files to .png
and then back to .eps, when I go View-Postscript, and View-DVI

Actually, it does it for any of the Views

I've cut it down to one image that is doing it, with the lyx file
attached. (The original hasn't been proof read yet, so no comments on the
grammar please...). I've also included a figure that doesn't get
converted.

Also, the document is included as an included file, in master2.lyx.

I don't really think this is LyX related. Do you have other X applications

Lyx-1.2.1 - can't export my book to ps

Hello,

I'm trying lyx-1.2.1 (with xforms 0.89).
I can open my lyx-1.1.6fix4 document under lyx-1.2.1 but, I can't export
it under ps.
Latex generate something like 19 errors.
The first error is :
LATEX error: \ALG@name undefined

I've attached the latex log file generated by latex via lyx (found in

When using lyx-1.1.6fix4, my document is exported without problems.
I've got the same behavior with lyx-1.2.0

Well, probably not. I guess the conflict is between Xforms and
the Xserver, but I have no idea what. I hope the friendly user
community will indulge my offtopic post. :-)

> Do you have other X applications

All other applications (for example, Nedit, Xterm and Xv) work
ok.

What I would like to know is how the cursor is handled in LyX.
Is all presentation of the cursor deferred to Xforms? Does
Xforms paint the cursor itself or is that itself again deferred
to the Xserver?

I am thinking of building the native Win32 port of Ruurd, but
the last time I tried that I failed miserably. I don't know if

Qt compiles, but there are quite a few dialogs missing. So it is sort of
"bare bones LyX"...

The correct way to do this is to add in the preamble:

Re: Lyx-1.2.1 - can't export my book to ps

2002-08-21 Thread Collette

Hello, me again

I've produced a Synthese.log with lyx-1.1.6fix4.
After a while, I decided to search algorithm.sty in both file (because
it seems to me this error is related to this package) and found this
package in Synthese-1.1.6fix4 but not in Synthese.log-1.2.1.
So, my question is: does lyx-1.2.1 include by default algorithm.sty ?
It looks like lyx-1.1.6fix4 includes algorithm.sty by default but not
lyx-1.2.1.

Your sincerely,

YC

Yes, this is exactly what happens :) Algorithms are now produced using
float.sty. This question has shown up often, but unfortunately I do
not remember what the solution was :)

1.2.1, 1.2.0 image handling different?

2002-08-21 Thread Rod Pinna

In 1.2.0, lyx, when converting to PS, didn't do anything to my images,
which are in eps format.

In 1.2.1, starting "View"->"Postscript" now starts the conversion chain

convert A.eps -> A.png
convert A.png -> A.eps

This didn't happen with 1.2.0

I haven't had time to see what happens yet, as I have to leave the office,
and it is a long document I start processing.

Re: Lyx-1.2.1 - can't export my book to ps

2002-08-21 Thread Collette

Hello,

So, if I want my document to work with lyx-1.2.1, I must include "at
hand" algorithm.sty in the latex preamble.
I've built a diff file between 1.2.1.log and 1.1.6fix4.log related to
files located in /usr/share/texmf/
Here's the result:
In 1.1.6fix4 I found these files (which are not in 1.2.1):

/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/algorith/algorithm.sty
/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/ifthen.sty

In 1.2.1 I found these files (which are not in 1.1.6fix4):

usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/graphics/graphicx.sty
(The first error occurs between this two files)
/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/amsfonts/umsb.fd

I will include algorithm in my preamble and see if it helps.

Your sincerely,

[ANNOUNCE] LyX 1.2.1 is released

2002-08-21 Thread Jean-Marc Lasgouttes

We are glad to announce the release of LyX 1.2.1.

LyX 1.2.1 is a maintenance release which fixes many bugs in version
1.2.0. We hope in this way to enhance world happiness, allowing the
developers to continue busily to prepare the next major release
1.3.0. There are a lot of fixes in there, and upgrading is highly
recommended.

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is an advanced open source document processor that encourages an
approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their
appearance. LyX lets you concentrate on writing, leaving details of
  visual layout to the software.

LyX runs on many Unix platforms (including MacOS X), OS/2, and under
Windows/Cygwin. Note that all these ports use the same xforms interface
and therefore need an X server.

You can download LyX 1.2.1 here :

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/lyx-1.2.1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/lyx-1.2.1.tar.gz

Prebuild binaries (mainly rpms for linux distributions) are available
at
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.2.1

If you already have LyX 1.2.0 sources, you may want to apply the
following patch instead
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/stable/patch-1.2.1.gz

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.2.1, you may either
e-mail the LyX user's mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://www.lyx.org/help/, and e-mail the LyX user's list if you
can't find an answer there.

** Updates

- it is now possible to build LyX with xforms 1.0rc4 (and probably 1.0
  when this gets released)

- partial rewrite of the find & replace feature. This should solve most of
  the performance problems

- new option `keep aspect ratio' in graphics dialog

- revert to the old behaviour when creating new floats (figure,
table...): the empty paragraph in the float now is a caption. It
seems that 1.2.0 behaviour was confusing too many people

- it is now possible to set the float placement parameters to
  "document defaults"

- when the cursor is inside a collapsible inset, `Edit>Open/close
float' will leave it after the inset after closing it (this should
  help entering of ERT insets)

- update Finnish, Danish, French and Russian localizations

- update Tutorial to 1.2.x features

- better support for entering Cyrillic and Greek alphabets

- cleanup shortcuts for section layouts. Starred versions are now
obtained by prepending a * to the section number (M-p asterisk 0, ...,
  M-p asterisk 6)

- add keyboard shortcuts to the Documents menu

- support the numpad direction keys as equivalent to normal cursor
  keys

- it is now possible to specify a non-existent file name on the command
line and have this file created for you

- new class cl2emult; update template for IEEEtran; small update to
  heb-article and hollywood textclasses

** Bug fixes

- fix positioning of cursor after undo

- fix bug where error insets were not correctly removed

- fix some cursor bugs with right-to-left languages

- fix Arabic text rendering

- fix opening of a bibitem inset in a RTL paragraph

- do not open/collapse collapsible insets on mouse button 3

- fix a crash when using iso10646-1 encoding

- fix bug where using case changing commands on the last word of a
paragraph would change the whole document (without any undo possible!)

- fix performance bugs when selecting with the mouse

- in commands that operate on words (Insert>Index...), make sure not
  to include insets in words

- save preamble too when using 'save as document defaults' in document
  layout dialog

- fix startup of LyX when Turkish locale is in effect

- fix latex output when there is a font change around a float or a
tabular (this fixes compatibility with some 1.1.6 files)

- re-read correctly graphics insets when file name contains a comma

- fix latex output when the name of a graphics file contains several "."

- always pass filenames without extension to latex, so includegraphics
can decide which extension is the right one

- fix rotation angle of images to be the same as in latex output

- fix the graphics inset file browser to use the right list of
extensions (instead of list of formats)

- fix support for 1.1.6 graphics files scaled as percentage of width
  or height

- fix handling of 'no display' option in 1.1.6 figure insets

- handle correctly fig and epsi files

- handle correctly zipped eps files (others worked well)

- fix the default rotation origin for graphics inset

- fix the default tgif format entry to use .obj as file extension and
  not .tgif

- fix reading of xpm files produced by some versions of imagemagick

- fix conversion of some eps files

- disable direct handling of ps files by the xforms image loader

- do not ignore zero-length vertical spacing with 'keep' flag

- fix drawing

Strange problem with 1.2.1 -- menubar entries vanish

2002-08-21 Thread Andreas Busch

Hi,

as soon as I discovered the sources of version 1.2.1
on the FTP server yesterday, I transferred them to my PC and
started the install process. Since I have versions 1.1.6fix1 and
1.2.0 also on my machine, I configured with --with-version-suffix,
and everything went fine.

After checking the new version briefly with src/lyx, I proceeded to
install it with make install. As a test, I wrote a brief letter,
and everything worked fine.

However, problems occurred after a further step. I am currently
preparing a major book manuscript for publication, and I wanted to
check and compare the results of exporting it to pdf from each of
the installed versions of LyX (because of the new handling of
graphics formats). So I started up versions 1.1.6fix1 after having
exported it with 1.2.1.

When I restarted 1.2.1 after that, only one entry was left in the
menubar (namely File -- normally, there are three entries: File,
Edit and Help). Even after loading a file, only three entries
appear in the menubar: File, Edit and Documents, and a number of
the entries in the respective menues are missing. File, for
example, only contains New..., Open..., Import and Exit.

I thought something had gone wrong, and started a new compile of
the program. But the result, much to my amazement, was the same:
when starting the newly compiled program, the symptoms persisted.
Then I deleted the whole directory, downloaded the sources afresh
from the FTP server, recompiled, and hoped that whatever the reason
for this strange behaviour was, it would now be gone.

But far from it. Still, when I start up 1.2.1, the menubar entries
are missing as described above. The same is true if I start version
1.2.0. Only 1.1.6fix1 still works with all menu entries.

Can anybody on the list imagine what has gone wrong, and how I can
fix this? I'd be much obliged!

Many thanks in advance,

Andreas

A newbie needs help

2002-08-21 Thread bintut

Hello all,

I am working a thesis and I'm using the CU-Thesis class on my Mandrake Linux
8.2, lyx-1.2.0-6mdk. This is my first time to use Lyx and I can't find the
solution of my problems and here they are:

1.) How can I change the second level of my Enumeration to a decimal numbers
instead of the default letters? For example:

 - - - < s n i p > - - -
1. First, first level enumeration
  1.1 First, second level enumeration
  1.2 Second, second level enumeration
2. Second, first level enumeration
  2.1 First, second level enumeration
  2.2 Second, second level enumeration
 - - - < s n i p > - - -

2.) How can i fit the table that I created that will not exceed the defined
margin? What is happening with my thesis is if I have a long table
header/caption, the cell extends. All I want is to have a fixed width of a
particular column and if the data within the cell is long, it will just
moves down the next line but not the next row, just like in MS Word.

3.) How will I change the label "Contents" to "Table of Contents" in my
thesis.cls or any other options to do it?

4.) I want to have a ladder type of indention, how will I do it? For
example:

 - - - < s n i p > - - -
  This is the first paragraph.

This is the first indention that I want to make.

This is the second indention that I want to make.

Then goes back to the normal indention for the second paragraph.
 - - - < s n i p > - - -

5.) How can I customize my Approval Sheet page of my thesis template/class
to have two names in one line/row? For example:

 - - - < s n i p > - - -
  APPROVAL SHEET

This is a paragraph with lots of sentence.

NameName
 Position Position

Name
  Position
 - - - < s n i p > - - -

6.) Lastly, I want to have my Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of
Tables, URLs, e-mails, and anything that is related to links internally and
externally goes to right position, section, website, etc., how can I do
this? I already tried the Insert --> URL --> and entered the name and the
right URL but it doesn't work when I tried to View --> pdflatex and when
exporting it to pdflatex.

Thank you very much in advance for your generous help.

God bless you all...

> Did you run Edit>Reconfigure?

No, I hadn't. It was from a clean configure/make cycle, so hopefully it
should have picked everything up. I will try that tomorrow, when I'm at
work to see if it makes a difference.

I'm about to compile it at home as well, so I should see what happens in
an hour or so, once it cranks through.

One other difference between the 1.2.0 I had, and the 1.2.1 -
1.2.0 was compiled with gcc 2.95, while 1.2.1 was compiled with 3.04 (I
think that is is one with debian 3). I also upgraded to debian 3.0 between
1.2.0, and 1.2.1, but I don't think that should have mattered. After the
upgrade, 1.2.0 continued as before.

The home compile will be with gcc 2.95, so we'll see if that makes any
difference.

JMarc,

many thanks for the quick reply, and for the sensible suggestion to
check with the -dbg init. The result made it clear very quickly
that I committed a grave error by simply copying the 1.2.0
preferences file to the .lyx-1.2.1 directory without editing some
of the paths given in there. As soon as I did that, the problems
went away.

Sorry for being so chaotic and unthoughtful, and many thanks for
helping me making it work again. I did some months ago post to the
list that LyX is essential to my work, and that I am very grateful
to the whole LyX developer community for producing such an
outstanding tool. I would like to repeat my heartfelt thanks again
and add those of my wife (who has just started writing up her PhD
thesis in LyX after hearing too many horror stories about problems
with MS Word...). If any of the developers pass through Oxford, be
sure to contact us -- we'll take you out for a beer!

The rpm says it needs 0.88.

I have 0.88 installed from tar-ball and 0.89 from rpm. Does anybody know how
I can tell Lyx to use the newer one?

Hello,

While rendering a 1.2.1 compatible old lyx file, a problem arise:

Some of the image files (which are .ps) are converted to .png and .eps.
Some of these images are huge so the converted files took a lot of disk
space.
I'm very short in disk space (I while change my hard drive) but the lyx
tempdir took more
than 50 Mo to render my file (mostly due to duplicated image files).

You have to recompile lyx to make it use another xforms version. If
you want to do that, you might as well pick xforms 1.0rc4 from
ftp.lyx.org/pub/xforms/Opensource and compile it too.

Re: table running from left to right

2002-08-21 Thread Remzi Seker

Lyx gives an error for this.. It says
Illegal pream-token (|): 'c' used.

Any idea what's wrong? By the way I am using koma-scr book class... So I have
use the plain and fancy definitions in the document. Would you like to have a
look at the preamble?

Thanks a lot

lyx2lyx

2002-08-21 Thread Collette

Hello,

I was reading some mails on the lyx devel archive and saw there's a tool
to convert old lyx files.
Is there a useable version of this tool ?
It may helps me to convert my bugy lyx file so I can use it under lyx-1.2.1.

Your sincerely,

We are working on it for 1.3.

I was trying to do the same for my Final Project documentation. I saw an

Figures. Unfortunately I tried it but I didnt get that I wanted. I got a lot
of errors, but don't worry I suppose that I did something wrong because I
am newbie :/.

I checked that section and tried it. As often seems to happen with docs, it
leaves out instructions that you need to add something to your document's
latex preamble. I added:

\usepackage{floatflt}

to my doc's preamble and then did:

\begin{floatingfigure}[r]{6cm}
## Insert figure
\end{floatingfigure}

It doesn't work. All this has done, even though the image displays in the
lyx document, is produce a blank line into the middle of my paragraph where
the image/figure should render in the final document. It is ignoring the
fact that there is an image there. This is with lyx-1.2.0.

Anyone see something I'm missing?
Raul, if you do not add the tex command mentioned above to your doc preamble,
you will get a load of errors when using the floatflt commands in your
document.

Hello,

The first one came from the fact that lyx-1.2.* doesn't use anymore the
package algorithm. So, \renewcommand{\ALG@name}{algorithme} produce a
latex error.
The second one came (maybe) from the lyxlist. I've sent a mail

RE: Figures when upgrading to 1.2.1

2002-08-21 Thread Robert Spee

I tried compiled lyx 1.2.1 from source now, installed xforms version 0.89-1
(from lyx contrib dir on ftp site), removed the .lyx directory and rerun
configure, but the figures are still not viewed correctly from within Lyx
and Lyx is still using convert for converting eps files to view inside lyx.

When I insert one of the pictures in a new lyx file, the same 'errors'
occure. Still the dvi output is OK.

When I view the eps in gv, it displayes correctly and it shows only the
image within the bounding box.

Has anyone a clue what is going wrong?

Problems with equation label containing underscores

2002-08-21 Thread Koen Vanbleu

Just installed LyX1.2.1 and ran into troubles (a bug?) with equation
labels containing underscores.

When inserting an equation and giving it a label like
"eq:interesting_equation", the next time you open the document
containing the equation, the label is changed to
"eq:interesting_{e}quation", so braces are inserted after the
underscore, causing all references to the label to become invalid.

You can do this by redefining the LaTeX command that writes the label, for
the second level it is \labelenumii, use this command in a LaTeX inset
\renewcommand{\labelenumii}{\labelenumi\arabic{enumii}}
(cf sample)

Check the table dialog, you can set a fixed size for a column.

Redefine the command \contentsname
\renewcommand{\contentsname}{Table of Contents}

You can simulate this with minipages that are right aligned (cf sample)

[BUG] Opening version 1.1.6 documents with LyX 1.2.1

2002-08-21 Thread Roberto Hernandez

I've found what appears to be a bug. It's related to labels. If a
document saved with LyX version 1.1.6fix4 has labels that include
underscores "_", then the label name is changed when opened with LyX
version 1.2.1, causing unresolved references.

Label Changed to
name_of_label name_{o}f_{l}abel
second_label second_{l}abel

Hope that helps.

1st paragraph indentation in french

2002-08-21 Thread Christophe GIAUME

Hi all,

First I want to thank all the guys who work on LyX for their great work.

LyX does not indent the first paragraph of a section. The second and the
following are well indented. This is the correct behavior in english.
But in french, all paragraphs including the first one have to be
indented.

It's only a display problem in LyX, the resulting LaTeX file has no
special indentation command, so all paragraphs are indented in the final
dvi.

CG

problem with dia -> pstricks

When trying to update to the 1.2.1 version of lyx, there is only one rpm
on the ftp site:

  lyx-1.2.1-1.i386.rpm

and when I did sudo rpm -ih lyx-1.2.1-1.i386.rpm, I got:

error: failed dependencies:
 libforms.so.0.88 is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1
 libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is needed by lyx-1.2.1-1

It seems as if the rpm was compiled using the old xforms (.88)
I don't know why libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is there. I've got:

libstdc++-2.96-112 and libstdc++-3.1-7

which provide me with libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so.

I've also tried to compile the srpm, but I didn't know where to get this
file, (I found a .src.rpm, but not a .srpm, are they the same??) When I
tried doing

sudo rpm --rebuild lyx-1.2.1-1.src.rpm

I got the following response:

lyx-1.2.1-1.src.rpm: No such file or directory

Could someone help me out, (or could RPM's be released similar to
lyx-1.2.0-1rh73-xforms089.i386.rpm).

Thanks,
Pierre

Further to 1.2.1 graphics

2002-08-21 Thread Rod Pinna

Hi all,

Just some observations. At the moment, I'm a little flummoxed as to what
to try.

I've run reconfigure, and 1.2.1 still converts *some* .eps files to .png
and then back to .eps, when I go "View->Postscript", and "View->DVI"

Actually, it does it for any of the Views

I've cut it down to one image that is doing it, with the lyx file
attached. (The original hasn't been proof read yet, so no comments on the
grammar please...). I've also included a figure that doesn't get
converted.

Also, the document is included as an included file, in master2.lyx.

In this set of papers, a design method tailored for the design of buried
pipes under a surface loading is presented.
The design method is presented in the form of design charts, with cut--offs
 for buckling and deflection limits.
In this study, a maximum vertical deflection of 5% of the diameter was
defined as failure, where buckling did not occur.

Also,

If I remove the \converter eps png line, the eps images are converted to
xpm images later on.

Again, this isn't when I try to view the images in Lyx, but when I try to
view a file from the view menu.
