Re: Extremely slow to save file (2.3.4, Windows)
Thank you for the information that this was (is) a recognized problem. However, after the update to 2.3.4.2, I am still experiencing the exact same slow file saving problem on Windows 10. I rebooted just to be sure, and I did check that I had the newest version installed. Anyone else notice that this problem persists? Extremely slow to save file (2.3.4, Windows)
Since v.2.3.4 (Windows 10) Lyx is extremely slow to save Lyx files. I'll click the save button and have to wait 3-5 seconds for the file saving process to complete, during which time the cursor is basically frozen (i.e. I cannot click back into the document and edit). At first I thought my computer may have needed a reboot, but that didn't help. In v.2.3.3 file saving was practically instantaneous. As far as I can tell this hangup is specifically a v.2.3.4 issue. WYSIWYG aspects of multiple integral limits
What I wish to do is center a lower multiple integral limit below the integrals instead of beside the integrals (the default). I'm aware from the documentation that the following works for double integrals: \iint\limits _S This successfully produces the pdf output I want, but within the Lyx document I still see \limits in red font. I don't want to see the remnants of raw latex within the Lyx window. What are the keystrokes required to WYSIWIG this so that I see the appropriate double integral within the Lyx window? In case it matters, I'm doing this within an equation array environment. Much thanks, JR -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users
Re: The tortured release of 2.3.0 Windows binaries
I remember from a long while back - years ago - that the Lyx installer on Windows would ask you to point to the directory of your Latex distribution. I think a good accommodation would be a message indicating that a Latex distribution has been identified (if one has), with a prompt asking users whether they'd like to use the detected distribution or if they'd like to point the installer to another. Re: The tortured release of 2.3.0 Windows binaries
People are still taunting about this like schoolyard infants? Well, here's a few reasons for you that apply to my case, Johnny boy: (1) I work in a scientific field and a specific laboratory that uses data analysis software for which there are only Windows versions. I used Linux exclusively prior to joining this lab. I'd rather not quit this job because of a Linux snobbery affliction. (2) Gaming. I have a Windows machine at home because I like to play modern video games. Good luck trying to get them to run on WINE, which is a cheat anyway if you're a Linux purist. (3) There's nothing wrong with having a dual boot Windows/Linux system for the sake of convenience. I'm not going to waste time booting into Linux just to write scientific documents if I'm already in Windows. The tortured release of 2.3.0 Windows binaries
My understanding from the Lyx developers forum is that the MiKTeX bugs that were the main cause of the delayed release for Windows users has been fixed. The issue now seems to be how to communicate possible MiKTeeX issues to users during the 2.3.0 installation process. In my 20+ years in the world of science, I have not known a single user of Lyx (~50 in total) who wasn't computer savvy. Why not just include a warning message that Lyx 2.3.0 may not function properly with MiKTeX distributions that have not been updated as recently as some specific date? My opinion is that you're making far too big a deal of this. I don't think putting this minor bit of extra responsibility in the hands of the users will go as badly as some have suggested. If users ignore this warning and find Lyx to be disfunctional as a result, well...too bad. You'd have done your due diligence with a simple warning message. If you have another prompt asking users whether they'd like to update their MiKTeX distribution, I think that'd be fine too. I realize that there are unofficial binaries available. Nonetheless, 2.30rc2 is working well enough for me on Windows 10. I'll await the official release. Jim

Using esint package within Lyx environment
Can somebody explain how to implement the esint package style integral symbols within Lyx? In particular, I'd like to be able to use keyboard shortcuts to create these nicer looking integration symbols with nicer looking bounds of integration. I have the Math Options set to automatically load the esint package. However, I cannot find any documentation about how to implement something like esint within Lyx. For example, how does one write a double integral with a "D" (i.e. a generic 2D domain) centered beneath both integral signs? Is there any non-opaque documentation anywhere that spells it out? Much thanks, Jim
Open Office export failure

Feature request
MathType has the nice feature that when you click to insert a matrix, one has the choice of immediately inserting a typical low-dimensional matrix (i.e. 2x2, 3x3, 3x1, etc), in addition to the option of setting the row and column numbers manually. As far as I can tell, in Lyx you must always specify the dimension explicitly. I find this a bit of a nuisance and thus make the feature request. Thanks to the Lyx team for their great work and their consideration of user feature requests. Jim

In 10 years time. Perhaps 15, tops. As for 2.0.1, our Windows Installer maintainer is currently off-line so there will be no binaries (very) soon. You may want to try Uwe's installer [1], which is currently unofficial but potentially the official installer in the future. --- I hope this doesn't indicate disinterest in the lyx Windows user base by the lyx development team. Some of us were basically forced to migrate to Windows for work reasons and ease of collaboration. In the past, when a new release was issued the Windoze binaries were up within a day or two

Any word on when the Windows binaries might be available for 2.0.1? I've been eagerly awaiting the first bug fix before installing the 2.x family. Thanks for all your great work. Jim

How to show the citations without the bibliography in lyx output?
What I'd like to do is generate a PDF document from my lyx source that shows all the reference citations in the main body, but does not produce the detailed list of references at the end, where the \bibliography command is placed. Is there a quick and easy way to do this in Lyx? Simply commenting out the \bibliography doesn't work because it messes up the citations, and other tricks I have seen (i.e. http://groups.google.com/group/latexusersgroup/browse_thread/thread/330d7dda163dcd91) cannot be implemented in an obvious way so far as I can tell. Lyx on Windows without admin privileges (2010)
This issue has come up in older threads, and I was curious to know where it stands today. As a long-time lyx user, I am in the unfortunate position of being in a Windoze-only (XP) environment without administrator privileges. Can anyone offer some insight as to whether I could expect a smooth-running lyx experience with Lyx and MikTex installed to a directory of choice for just a plain old ordinary Windoze user? Does Aspell still require installation to the C:\ directory? If I can overcome this hurdle, the next one will involve the seamless conversion of lyx/latex to MS Word and back, which I understand is a far more challenging issue without commercial software. Thanks, Jim

Suppressing page numbers in lyx 1.6.5
I'm running Lyx on Windoze 7 (64bit). I was under the impression that the following document style setting will suppress page numbers: Document -- Settings -- Page Layout -- Headings Style -- empty However, in the single-page document (article style) that I'm currently working on, I still get the page number 1 at the bottom of the page when I generate the PDF. Am I doing something wrong? Are there alternative methods for suppressing page numbers? Thanks, Jim

Text overlapping table float wrap
Hello. I have a problem with table wraps that seems to have occurred for other people as well. On occasion, somewhat unpredictably, the document text will not respect the presence of a table float (wrap mode) and will overlap the table. My understanding from reading this forum and others is that this is primarily a problem with latex, not necessarily Lyx. There were some posts on the Lyx forum, prior to the release of the 1.6x family, suggesting that this problem might be fixed. As of version 1.6.2 I am still having the problem. I'm just wondering if this is of no surprise to the Lyx community. Should I expect to have these problems with table and figure wraps still, as of version 1.6.2? Thanks, Jim
Question about eqnarray environment (multiple = or symbols)
Hello : this is probably more of a latex issue than Lyx, but I would like to do this quickly in Lyx, so... What I want is a neatly formatted set of relations like a S b c T d and so forth. I just need the analog of the usual 3 column equation array environment so that the various inequality symbols match up properly. In the above example I want 5 columns instead of the usual 3. I tried to use the AMS align environment, but had trouble adding the columns (the results came out with way too much spacing). How do I do this in Lyx? Thanks, Jim

Small bug in change tracker (1.5.0rc2)
This is a minor annoyance, possibly even something designed to be part of the document change tracking (though I can't imagine why), but when one elects to show changes in output with the change tracker, the generated PDF file jams together the old, soon-to-be deleted text with the newer text. This happens even though there are, correctly, spaces between the deleted text and the new text in the lyx window itself. I nominate this for a minor fix. Thanks, Jim

In my current installation (linux) of 1.5.0rc2, I see that the lyx curriculum vitae class (cv.cls) is not available, allthough lyx apparently installed it in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/lyx/. How (in linux) do I make this class available? I didn't find the Customization documentation particularly clear on this point. I tried texhash /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/lyx/ in the hope that this directory would then be part of the latex search path, but this failed. The cv class is still listed by lyx as unavailable. Suggestions? Thanks, Jim

1.50rc2 Windoze: Aspell problems again (installer)
For version 1.5.0 release candidate 2: When I use the Windoze installer I get the mysterious message InetLoad plug-in Your internet connection seems to have dropped out! Please reconnect and clock Retry to resume downloading... I'm certain that my internet connection didn't drop out. Is this a bug in the installer? It happened, suspiciously enough, while it was downloading the aspell dictionary, and the last installer had some weird bug associated with the dictionary as well. It seems to me that ASPELL is again presenting trouble with the installer. I soldiered through this error and the installation (apparently) completed successfully. Jim

intersectingStaticSet message with 1.5.0rc1 (linux)
When running 1.5.0 release candidate 1 on linux (Fedora Core 5, both 32 bit or 64 bit) I get the warning message intersectingStaticSet: row X was invalid where X is some integer. This message appears something like 30 times in succession, X ranging from 1 to 30. I suspect this must be a warning from QT, and not Lyx's fault, but I'm curious to know if any other Linux users see this annoying message and whether I can do anything about it. I am using the latest QT4 packages available from the Fedora Core repositories. Thanks, Jim

1.5.0rc1 spellchecker (Windoze)
I have installed the 1.5 release candidate 1 on two Windows XP machines (one 32 bit and the other 64 bit). Each time, the installation gave me a message that it couldn't download the English spellchecker. Otherwise, the installation went smoothly. What's the deal though with the spellchecker warning? Jim

Suppress figures in output
Sorry, not a lyx specific question, but more of a latex one. What I want to do is preserve my figure captions and labels, so that they can be properly referred to in the latex (lyx) document, but I do not want the figure graphics shown in the final output. Is there any way to do this, some extra flag in the float environment that says don't show this figure? I need to do this because some journals have very annoying automated systems for taking uploaded latex and generating documents for reviewers, but yet they want figures uploaded separately. I want to avoid having the generated output showing my figures twice! Generally, is there any way to add figure labels (that is, labels within the figure float environment) without actually showing any figures? No matter how I do it, I seem to find some residue in the final output related to my attempts to do this (for instance, if I do a \begin{figure} and \end{figure}, and put a caption label in between, I will still see figure 1: etcetera in the final output). Thanks, Jim

Lyx and selinux
Lyx version: 1.4.4 OS: Linux Fedora Core 6 (64 bit) I had quite a rough time getting Lyx to view my document as PDF or DVI. I kept getting errors related to the image conversions, errors like - convert: zlib error /usr/share/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.py ERROR Execution of convert failed FAILED to find the default font: ' ', 'Sans' -- I had zlib installed, and seemingly everything else necessary. I finally discovered an unholy intrusion of the selinux (security enhanced linux) policy. By manually disabling selinux (System-Administration-Security Level and Firewall) I was able to get all of these problems to magically disappear, and Lyx now seems to function flawlessly. Anyone else encountered this with Lyx and linux? I'm not really savvy enough to know what selinux is really doing for me, but if I had my druthers I wouldn't disable it completely for the sake of a (admittedly great) document processing program! Perhaps someone can tell me how to allow Lyx to access certain libraries without raising some sort of security flag or encountering permission problems. Thanks, Jim

Success with lyx-144-4 standard installer (Windoze)
Just reporting that the newest standard installer lyx-144-4 works on all of my windoze XP machines, whether 32 or 64 bit. None of the previous installers worked for me (lyxc.exe error). In case some of you Windoze users have been hesitant to upgrade, my bet is that this one will work for you. Jim

Using alternate 1.4.4 Windows Lyx Installer instead of the one that doesn't work
This message is really in response to Uwe Stöhr, who has been counseling troubled Windows users like me who have been unable to get a working installation of Lyx 1.4.4. Like many others, I've been encountering an immediate crash of lyxc.exe upon trying to launch Lyx. The newest installer 'lyx-144-2.exe' failed for me as well as the previous one. Following Uwe's suggestion, I tried the installer from http://developer.berlios.de/projects/lyxwininstall The small installer I used was 'LyXWin144Small-2-11.exe' I am happy to report that this actually worked for me on Windows XP (32 bit). My initial installs failed on two different 32-bit Windoze machines, but this other installer worked on both of them. There is just one mildly annoying message I see whenever I launch a lyx file, and it's related to bibtex. Maybe this is to be expected, but I always get a complaint from the command window saying that lyx couldn't find the bibtex .bib files I specified within the lyx file. It's not a crippling error. I can generate a PDF view and all the references are there correctly. Is this message simply due to the fact that lyx initially looks for .bbl files that aren't there? I never quite understood this feature of lyx. I remember the days when a latex compilation resulted in a .bbl file being created locally (which makes it easier to collaborate, since you could send the .bbl along with the document and your co-writer could see the references without needing the bibtex databases). One final thing. My naive hope that the Lyx Installer would also work for 64-bit XP was dashed. It didn't work. When I attempted to launch lyx I would see a brief flash of the command window, which would then disappear, and no lyx window would appear. In fact, I seem to have quite a bit more trouble with lyx in a 64-bit environment. In 64-bit Fedora Core 6, I'm finding that lyx cannot convert PDF figures. I believe I have all the necessary ingredients installed like ImageMagick, but I get numerous errors such as '/usr/share/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.py ERROR'. I could use a bit of help with this, actually. Thanks for your help. Jim

Lyx 1.4.4 Windows Installer fails for me
On Windows XP I had a working 1.4.3-5 installation, which I got working only with a great deal of pain (owing to missing Miktex files, which one-by-one I had to install at Miktex's behest). I thought I'd try out 1.4.4-1 just for fun, hoping for some enhanced (faster!) performance. In this effort I first uninstalled Lyx (keeping my existing and apparently sufficient Miktex, ghostscript, ImageMagick, etc installations). After an extended delay while the Lyx installer did some heavy ruminations on my XP system, Lyx 1.4.4-1finally installed. I fired up the executable and was treated to nothing except a message about lyxc.exe crashing. It just didn't work out of the box, even though a reinstallation of 1.4.3-5 worked perfectly. Oh well. With each successive Lyx update, the installation seems to be taking longer and longer, with more and more glitches. I was able to install the 1.3series on Windows with no trouble. I'm curious if anyone else out there is having similar problems. Why does the installer take so long anyway? It seems to take 5 minutes, even if I already have Miktex and all the other stuff installed. Thanks, Jim

Question about bibtex and BIBINPUTS environment variable
I use lyx 1.4.3 with linux (Fedora Core 5), and in the past have found it useful to define the environment variable BIBINPUTS = /home/jim/my_bibfiles My impression was that this allowed bibtex by default to search for .bib files in this particular directory, so that when it came to adding .bib files to my document I didn't have to go hunting around directories to include them. These .bib files conveniently showed up as clickable items. However, I recently had the following problem. I put a few .bib files in a different directory and wished to include them for bibtex in some document. Since they weren't in the directory specified by BIBINPUTS, I had to click through a directory tree and specify their absolute path when I included them. Everything worked fine within the document itself. I was able to add citations and choose from a list that corresponded to the .bib files I had included. The citations appeared to show up correctly in the lyx window itself. However, when it came to viewing the document (DVI or PDF) the references were not properly included (just a bunch of ??). Lyx complained that it couldn't find the .bib files I specified, although lyx didn't complain whatsoever when I added these .bib files after my insertion of the Bibtek Generated Bibliography (from Insert -- List/TOC -- Bibtex Bibliography). To see what the problem was, I eliminated the BIBINPUTS environment variable and rebooted. After this, lyx was able to find properly the .bib files I had previously tried to include with no success. Thus, it appears that unless you double-click one of the .bib files specified in the directory of BIBINPUTS, then lyx (or bibtex) fails to find the corresponding .bib files. The solution seems to be to remove the BIBINPUTS environment variable altogether. Why is this? Shouldn't I be able to define a default BIBINPUTS directory, but still add whatever .bib files I wish from other directories? Thanks, Jim
