Do I have to be a member, how do I become one? nbsp; Wolfgang Well, that site was/is confusing for me too. But it has advantage too: you can post/ask question as a guest, don't have to register. I try to explain what I know. For example look at the follwong question: http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/37989/dissertation-how-to-customize-bst Near to the top there is the title of the question, practically the question itself: Dissertation: How to customize *.bst? Below that you see a number (currently 11): this number indicates how many people found this question useful (how many people voted it). Above and below the number the nib shaped arrow for voting up or down the question (up: you find it useful, down: you find it bad). There is tooltip for the arrows if you hover the mouse on them. Below the question there are comments. These should not be answers, only additional information related to the question. You can add clarifying information to the question for example. After adding a comment, for a limited time you can change/edit your comment. Below the comments ther are the answers. If there are several answers, they are ordered according to the numbers at their left side. The numbers here are also votes, indicating how many user found the answer useful. The most useful answer goes closest to the question. Each answer might have their own comments, similarly to questions. Regarding etiquette: It is expected not to use greetings, signature, thank you etc., only write down your question/comment/answer. The author's name is put there by the system, you don't have to include it. If you want to ask a question, click the Ask question button (right side close to the top on the page). You add your question title, and in the window below write your question. If you want to add computer code start the it with 4 space and it will be presented as computer code. There are other formatting aids and help pages. You have to add max 5 tags. You write the tag which triggers the system to show a list of tags to choose from. Finally you click Post question Regards, bcsikos

2014/1/16 Wolfgang Engelmann engelm...@uni-tuebingen.de Hello again, I tried to change the kluwer.bst file in such a way, that the volume of a journal is not given in bold in the References by changing the part after %% to the {* * in the following function: FUNCTION {format.vol.num.pages} { volume embolden field.or.null number empty$ 'skip$ %%{ ( number * ) * * {* * but the volume is still in bold. I searched for bold in the kluwer.bst and found only the above item besides this one: FUNCTION {embolden} { duplicate$ empty$ { pop$ } { {\bf swap$ * } * } if$ }. which is probably not the one I need. I changed Jürgens mykluwer.bst to mykluwerNoBold.bst before running lyx. Apparently I did something wrong. Any idea? Try (untested) FUNCTION {format.vol.num.pages} { volume field.or.null number empty$ 'skip$ { ( number * ) * * (i.e., change volume embolden to volume). HTH Jürgen

I found a way to do it in http://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX-W%C3%B6rterbuch:_makebst on the terminal tex docstrip answer the questions as shown \infileext=mbs \outfileext=tex \Options=bblbst \filelist=merlin \answer=n a file merlin.tex is produced, which has to be renamed to babelbst.tex This file can be edited "and", "editor" etc. in the desired language The file has to be placed in the same directory as the document However, running the lyx document gives a number of errors such as [9] [10] [11] ! Missing = inserted for \ifnum. o l.770 ...te ancient (lamprey \citealt{Menaker1997} ). I was expecting to see `<', `=', or `>'. Didn't. ! Missing number, treated as zero. o l.770 ...te ancient (lamprey \citealt{Menaker1997} ). A number should have been here; I inserted `0'. (If you can't figure out why I needed to see a number, look up `weird error' in the index to The TeXbook.) Weird ! I give up for the time being. Wolfgang

2014/1/13 Paul A. Rubin: Jürgen, By parse properly, do you mean that the use of braces may override the design of the .bst file, or is there more to it (such as creating problems with spacing)? My usage patterns in the past may have been somewhat atypical. I would write for journals that do not have a .bst file (and may not accept LaTeX submissions), so I would use a convenience .bst file (such as plainnat) and override the formatting of name prefixes using braces. Well, you just fool bibtex. If properly used, BibTeX knows who a given name is constructed. It knows whether a name has a von-part, junior-part, and that a name might consist of several first names etc. If you write {{Johann Wolfgang von}{Goethe}} bibtex thinks the first name is Johann Wolfgang von, which is of course wrong. It might result in the output you want just now, but if you have to follow different conventions, your database is not usable anymore. If you write {Johann Wolfgang von Goethe} bibtex reads: Surnames = Johann Wolfgang von-part = von Last name = Goethe and you can instruct it to output the name the way you want (wrt order, abbreviation of some parts etc.). I found a somewhat helpful PDF file at https://www.tug.org/TUGboat/tb27-2/tb87hufflen.pdf; at least it clarifies von v. Von. I recommend http://mirrors.ctan.org/info/bibtex/tamethebeast/ttb_en.pdf http://mirrors.ctan.org/biblio/bibtex/base/btxdoc.pdf I'm not entirely sure if there is a definitive proper choice between von Kleist, Heinrich and Kleist, Heinrich von, although I personally prefer the former. In the database, it clearly needs to be von Kleist, Heinrich or Heinrich von Kleist. See Oren Patashnik's original bibtex manual. In the output, it's a conventional thing. In German texts, both is common. Personally, I also prefer von Kleist, Heinrich, but sorted under K, not v. Note, though, that people often omit the von-part in the text, talking of Kleist, Goethe etc. This can be controlled via BibTeX as well, if you use the proper syntax in the database. Jürgen Paul

Note, though, that BibTeX (or Biblatex) can only parse the name properly without any braces, and if it given in one of the following three forms: First von Last von Last, First von Last, Jr, First That is, the example should be entered as: de la Iglesia, H. O. and Cambras, T. or H. O. de la Iglesia and T. Cambras Then, it is the task of the bibtex or biblatex style file output the name as you prefer. (BTW I would also enter always complete first names. The style file can abbreviate that to initials, if desired). Regards Jürgen 2014/1/12 Paul A. Rubin ru...@msu.edu I think I would have entered it into JabRef as H. O. {de la Iglesia} and T. Cambras ... or possibly {H. O.} {de la Iglesia} and T. Cambras ... (although I think the braces around the initials are unnecessary). Paul

For instance, in Kluwer, you'll find: FUNCTION {format.authors} { author empty$ { } { {vv~}{ll}{, jj}{, f.} author format.names } if$ } FUNCTION {format.editors} { editor empty$ { } { {vv~}{ll}{, jj}{, f.} editor format.names editor num.names$ #1 { (eds) * } { (ed.) * } if$ } if$ } Where you have: vv = von-part (spelled-out) ll = Last name (spelled-out) jj = junior-part (spelled-out) f. = first name (abbreviated). So, without testing, I suppose the following change will do the trick: FUNCTION {format.authors} { author empty$ { } { {ll}{, jj}{, f.}{~vv} author format.names } if$ } FUNCTION {format.editors} { editor empty$ { } { {ll}{, jj}{, f.}{~vv} editor format.names editor num.names$ #1 { (eds) * } { (ed.) * } if$ } if$ } As always: do not modify the original file directly, but make a copy. When there are not too many entries (about 20-30) I would quickly create BibTeX entries for them before trying nasty TeX-tricks to get an image in the bibliography. Sorry that I cannot help you further. regards Uwe

Re: Bibtex question on URL references
OK. We'll modify apalike.bst. (I'm assuming that apalike is otherwise OK, and therefore that the formatting of the author field, etc, is as you would want it. If you want to start with something else, you can do that, too.) Copy apalike to apalikemod.bst, put this in your local TeX tree, run texhash, and then edit as follows. We're going to need to add a field for the retrieval date and the url. Let's call them retrieved and url and add them to the ENTRY section of the .bst file. (That's right at the beginning.) We're going to define two new BibTeX types for the online periodical and online document: Let's call them oarticle and odocument. (Change the names if you like.) Add this to the .bst file: FUNCTION {oarticle} { output.bibitem format.authors author output.check author format.key output % special for output.year.check % apalike new.block format.title title output.check new.block journal emphasize journal output.check new.block Retrieved retrieved * , from \url{ * url * } * output fin.entry } FUNCTION {odocument} { output.bibitem author empty$ { format.editors author and editor output.check editor format.key output } { format.authors output.nonnull } if$ output.year.check % special for apalike new.block format.btitle title output.check new.block Retrieved retrieved * , from \url{ * url * } * output fin.entry } Put these near the definition of FUNCTION{article} and the rest. The former is modeled on the article entry type; the latter on book. So the latter allows an editor and such, if you happen to have one. I've removed the cross-reference stuff found in article and book, as that shouldn't be relevant, as well as the note field. Note that I haven't tested this, but it should work. As for JabRef, open OptionsCustomize entry types. On the left, you will see a list of entry types. Type oarticle in the box at the bottom and click Add. Add author, title, journal, and year as required fields. Type retrieved in the box and click Add, and do it again for url. Add whatever optional fields you want. Repeat the procedure for the other new entry type, odocument. These will not appear on the New article menus, but they will appear on the menu you get by right clicking on the entry type displayed along the left when you go to edit one. So you can create a new one as whatever you like, right-click on the entry type, and change it as you wish.
