I often find myself looking through several manuals trying to find information.
It would be much better if I could make a single search of all manuals. Maybe
there is a way and I just do not know it.

Open up advanced find and click on the "settings" tab. Then choose "All
manuals".

Very nice Scott. I thought there might be a good way of doing this.

It would be nice to have something like Help > Search all manuals, and
it would essentially open advanced find and set it to search all
manuals. Currently it's a bit hidden.

Scott

Also one cannot currently search the manuals without opening another
document which is a little odd.

Agreed. We would need to allow the advanced find pane to be opened
without a buffer.

This may just be a matter of changing the isBufferDependent method for
that dialog. But there may be other aspects of its setup that really do
need a buffer. That could probably be changed, but it might need more work.

Hal,

While it's a kludge, you could compile each manual to a PDF, put them in a
directory, say /LyX/manuals/, then use pdfgrep to search them:
PDFGREP(1)Pdfgrep Manual
PDFGREP(1)

NAME
pdfgrep - search PDF files for a regular expression

SYNOPSIS
   pdfgrep [OPTION...] PATTERN [FILE...]
pdfgrep [OPTION...] [-e PATTERN | -f FILE] [FILE...]

DESCRIPTION
Search for PATTERN in each PDF FILE and print matching lines. By
default, PATTERN
   is an extended regular expression.

pdfgrep tries to be mostly compatible with GNU grep with some
PDF-specific
distinctions and additional options. Most notably, -n prints page
instead of line
   numbers.

A very useful tool.

Unfortunately the next section (which is in my case 3.5) is renumbered

Perhaps the following is an updated link:

https://library.princeton.edu/special-collections/file/44213/download?token=YE7XonQq

I'm not sure if the new requirements are different.

In any case, I don't think the Princeton-specific requirements are
relevant to what you are interested in. You can just look at the .lyx
files for an example of having a separate appendix for each chapter.

There might be a better way in recent versions of LyX to achieve this. I
really don't know.

Appendix in odd pages

2019-10-16 Thread jcredberry
Dear all,

One of my students has made his thesis with Lyx using memoir. Nevertheless,
after the first appendix, the second one starts on an even page, yet, all
chapters up until then start on an odd one. We can see that a blank page is
automatically inserted at the end of the first appendix like LaTeX is
forcing us to start the second appendix on an even page. Is it we or there
is a rule where chapters should start on even pages?

Thanks for your help.

Wrong numbering of appendix

2015-05-05 Thread Aline Gautrein
Hey Lyx-friends,

I use Koma-script class book. I added an appendix to my dissertation and in
the Lyx-file it is correctly numbered with Appendix A. Figure A.1... etc.

My problem: In the pdf-file the "A" is missing in the headings and the
captions. Headings look like this:

.1.1 Blabla
.1.3 blabla

captions like this:

Figure .1:
Figure .2:

Do I have to insert something in the preamble, saying that letters are
allowed in heading- and caption numbers?

Which command do I need?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks so much guys for the offer to help!

somehow it has resolved itself.I cut back most of the pages (over
200), and the problem still existed. I also decided to try and recreate
the problem by building a new parent doc, which did recreate the
problem, but I couldn't find the actual cause, despite doing it little
by little, but suddenly it started working correctly after a few days.

The only significant feature I can recall having changed was that the
chapter title for the first appendix had a blue underline (I think I
used an american dictionary, but changed it to british - so it treated
it like a different language?) I removed that text and rewrote it so it
no longer had the blue underline. Now appendices all render fine as PDF.
Coincidence? Perhaps. Bizarre, definitely but anyway, it is no longer a
problem...

Cheers,
Tim

There is only one "Begin Appendix here", and it is in the parent
document with the child documents all included within that region parent
appendix region. The child docs do not contain any appendix information
- it should all be set by the parent.

The thing is that LyX treats it correctly, and within LyX everything
looks perfect. The child documents all say Appendix, and have the
correct Appendix value, the TOC is all correctly labelled with the
appropriate appendices.

It is only the resulting PDF that is incorrect. The PDF that is
generated by LyX says chapter instead of Appendix, and the TOC of the
PDF is labelled incorrectly. I am using MacTEX 2012, so I assume that
should all run properly

Appendix issue

2012-12-06 Thread Tim Opie
Hi, I am working on my PhD thesis using LyX 2.0.5 on OS X 10.8.2, and
the weirdest thing is happening with my appendix.

I have set up the appendix region (using start appendix here) and
included the appendix files in my parent document. The TOC outline and
the Navigator see them perfectly, and title them correctly as Appendix A
Appendix B Appendix C etc. - wonderful However when I render the
document as a PDF, they all get renamed to Chapter, all except the first
appendix - which still retains the title Appendix A. Even if I put
multiple appendices in just one lyx file, it still keeps the name
Appendix A for the first appendix but changes every later one to
chapter.

Any thoughts as to what is going on?

You know, you can do things like this:

[ERT]\newcommand\mytheorem{[/ERT]This is the statement of a very

On export, this will define \mytheorem just as you want it. Now you

PDF appendix header and footer

2012-04-09 Thread Hannu Vuolasaho

Hi!

I'm adding PDF appendix to one article without success.
What I have been able to do so far:
a) I have minipage and one pdf page as graphic. Headers and footers OK.
b) I have all PDF pages nicely put each page on its own page No header or
footers. I tried to scale pdf down, but no headers.
c) I have all three. Import inside a minipage, have all pages stacked over each
other on one page and headers and footers are showing beneath.

Option a) is impossible as work to import each page separately would take too
much time.
Option b) looks bad.
Option c) is unusable.

The problem with that PDF is its margin. I'm unable to have fancyheaders and
PDF file on same page.
Now. How do I import pdf document as external material and have it look like it
should be on these pages and doesn't look like someone printed also that and
put it same pile with my article?

Is this common problem or am I trying to do something stupid?

best regards,
Hannu Vuolasaho

Making "Appendix" word display as part of TOC

Hi
Is there a way to prepend Appendixes in the Table of Contents by the word
Appendix? At the moment the only change in my TOC is the numbering but I
would like to make a clear distinction between content and Appendix. The
lyx user manual does not make mention of how to do this nor does the manual
itself do what I want as I could have used the user manual source as
example. A second price might be to just say Appendix A, rather than A for
which I have found a way of doing.

(book) class, and I have a problem with my appendix.

The appendix is relatively short, only 2 parts with 1 and 2 pages,
respectively. I would like to name these parts A and B, but I don't
want to make them chapters, because of the formatting that would bring
(almost half a page of whitespace and at least one empty page before
each new chapter, which is ridiculous with such short parts).

So basically, I want the naming (A and B instead of A1 and A2) of
chapters, but the formatting of sections. (A minimal file is
included.)

Is there a not overly complicated way to do this?

Thank you for any help, and a happy new year!
Bianca

Yeah, I was gonna respond to this thread and mention that I've had
problematic side effects when using the star environments. In my
opinion they're more trouble than they're worth.

You know, since you have only one appendix and you're not really using
it like standard appendices, it might be easier to build the appendix
line in a style in the layout or in ERT, use \phantomsection() to
enable correct crossreferences, and \addtocontents so it gets shown in
your table of contents. I think you'll have to use a little trial and
error to get it to work just right, but it seems to me to be the most
direct route.

I only realized that with the *-version of the appendix, I can no longer
cross-reference it as "Appendix" in the text (it gets numbered like a normal
item, eg section). Any alternative solutions?

Use the environment "Section*" to suppress the "A", and type "Appendix"

Elsevier Appendix numbering problem

2010-12-18 Thread James Lake
Hi lyx users,

I am coming up against a formatting problem when using the article (Elsevier)
document class. I am also using the Theorems (Numbered by section) module for
numbering of propositions, lemmas, definitions etc. The problem is that the
numbering in Appendix A is coming up as "Theorem Appendix A.1." rather than
just "Theorem A.1".

I have updated to the latest elsarticle.cls from the elsevier website but this
didn't fix the problem (although it did fix the problem of "Appendix A" being
"AppendixA" as identified here
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.editors.lyx.general/66279). Any help would be
appreciated.

appendix starts on an even page

2010-11-25 Thread Christopher . E
Hey guys,

I have a problem with my phd-thesis. After my bibliography the appendix should
start. The problem is that the last reference of the bibliography is on an even
page. The next odd page is empty and hence the appendix starts on the next even
page. How can I get rid of this empty page between the bibliography and the
appendix? Is this normal? I thought new chapters should start on an odd page. I
am using Lyx 1.6.5 and the ducumentclass is report (Koma-script) two-sided. For
the bibliography I used bibtex with the unsrtdin style. The appendix chapter I
included with input. Please tell me when you need further information and
thanks in andvance for your help.

Re: Appendix Woes

2010-05-07 Thread Tim Wescott

I'm pretty sure it's a LaTeX issue -- things look fine in Lyx, it's the
rendered document that's a problem.

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, so I'll just defer judgment until I have time to
upgrade.

Rob Oakes wrote:

Are you seeing it when writing with the editor? Or is it showing up in
your PDF? If it's the former, then there is a problem with
article.layout file, and it has been fixed in the upcoming 2.0 release.
If it's the latter, it's a LaTeX problem.

I've seen it in both places.

If it's a LyX problem, I'd just recommend that you ignore it. Layout
problems can be fixed, but it's somewhat complicated. If you really
want to take a stab at it, you can find some information about modifying
section counters in this article:
http://blog.oak-tree.us/index.php/2009/11/02/custom-lyx-nih

If it's in LaTeX, that's slightly more problematic and you have a couple
of options.

The reason that the numbering is all screwy has to do with the way that
the appendix counters are defined in article.cls. These have since been
fixed in more recent versions. I ran into some problems when I was
using the TeXLive 2007 in Ubuntu. In 10.04, they've updated the
packages to TeXLive 2009 and this particular problem resolved itself (in
addition to a host of other annoyances).

The first solution, then, is to update your LaTeX distribution. The
instructions for this depend on your platform and which distribution
you're using. If you're using Ubuntu Linux (and you really should be,
because it's generally awesome), they will be updated automatically when
you move to 10.04.

If that isn't an option, the alternative is to use a different document
class. I'd recommend that you switch over to Koma-Script. Converting
from article to scrarticle is usually fairly painless. It's converting
from KOMA-Script to the standard classes that really messes things up.

The final option is to simply redefine the counters by hand. But that,
like modifying layout files, can be painful and I'll allow you to
discover the secrets via Google.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers,

Rob

See your modified example.lyx (attached). Added the Appendix package to
Document->Settings->LaTeX Preamble and added the necessary code to surround
the appendix in the document.

Hi Rainer,

I'm pretty sure there's a LaTeX command for the word "Appendix". So for
instance, in English that command might yield "Appendix", whereas in German it
might yield "Anhang" (I used a translator, don't laugh too hard). I'm pretty
sure there's an equivalent LaTeX command for "Chapter". Anyway, perhaps your
command for Appendix is blank.

Meanwhile, I don't know exactly how you'd put "Appendix A" on the same line as
the appendix's title, because an appendix is basically a chapter and the Book
document class puts "Chapter 6" on the line above "Why LyX is the Best". Maybe
there's some package that will do this for you.

That is similar to what I want - only that I want it to be in one line.
instead of (see attached example) which results in

1 This happens rst
2 And this next
A Some additional info
B Some more additional info

i would like to have:

1 This happens rst
2 And this next
Appendix A Some additional info
Appendix B Some more additional info

And I can not use a different document class.

Hi Rainer,

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for, but I can tell you how things
work in my book "Rapid Learning for the 21st Century", which is based on the
Book document class. That book has an Appendix called "Example: SSH".

On the Appendix's chapter page, it looks like this:

Appendix A
Example: SSH

In the table of contents, it looks like this:

A Example: SSH

Is this what you're already getting, what you'd like to get, or neither?

equation numbering in an appendix

2010-01-14 Thread E. Kaplan
I am using an article document class, and have equations in the body of
the article and in the appendix. I would like the equations to be
numbered sequentially, and the numbering restarted in the appendix and
appear as: A1, A2, etc.
How do I do that? I tried the various suggestions on the archive, but
none worked. I do not really want to number all the equations by
section, as provided in 1.6.5 by the new modules (that got the appendix
equations to appear as .1, .2 etc.).

Thanks,
EK

Hej Sølvi,

I think I see what you mean:
Insert> File > LyX document
removes the inserted appendix.
But if you inset something (e.g. a non-breakable space) before inserting the
file it seems to work. Also note that you can't have e.g. chapter styes in the
appendix).

I hope this was of some help.

Hi

I have four appendices which I have created on individual .lyx files. My
thesis is built around a master document in which I use the Include
function for each separate file (and Insert function within the Included
files.)

I have started the Appendix in the master document using the command:
Document - Start appendix here. I have tried every command I can think, in
order to be able to include the appendices instead of writing them
directly into the masterdoc. So far nothing have worked.

Can someone please thell me how I should configure the child document and

Right. Well, in that case, I think you need to redefine part of the
chapter thing. The part you want is this, which I've just copied from
book.cls:

\d...@schapter#1{\typeout{#1}%
\l...@secnumber\@empty
\d...@toclevel{0}%
\ifx\chaptername\appendixname \...@tocwriteb\tocappendix{chapter}{#1}%
\else \...@tocwriteb\tocchapter{chapter}{#1}\fi
\chaptermark{#1}%
\addtocontents{lof}{\protect\addvspace{1...@}}%
\addtocontents{lot}{\protect\addvspace{1...@}}%
\...@makeschapterhead{#1}\@afterheading}

You can put this, with your changes, into ERT right before the appendix
starts. If you just enclose the \typeout{#1} part in whatever you want
to use to center it, that should do.

appendix tables with endfloat

2009-02-13 Thread Thomas DiPrete
Hi, I'm writing a paper that requires tables be placed at the end,
and I do that using the endfloat package. My problem is that I also
want to include a couple of tables labeled as Table A.1 and Table A.
2. I've tried creating an appendix at the end of the paper with
\appendix followed by a \setcounter command, but this causes all my
tables to be labelled as A.1, A.2, A.3 etc. Is there a way to keep
the numbering of the text tables as 1,2,3 etc followed by A.1, A.2?

So, I have already written my document (which is more than 50 pages if I
remember well) in which the majority is Greek text but there is a _not_
so small part of english (commands and command outputs) spreaded all
over the document. So I don't think anybody (from the perspective of an
end-user), would sit-down and mark&(re)define the text (no matter if
seeting the language to Greek and marking English or the opposite).

Well, you might say that this is my mistake. Accepted. But I don't see
this as an option now.

Redefining only the \xnames is enough for me. It works.

Well, I might need to re-define the "Cross-references" as well. (BTW,
can I re-define the cross-references the same way I did with the
others?).

In future I will be more careful now that I know that and I'll act
accordingly.

I didn't try that. I'll try it at some point-out.

What is easier in marking every single Greek text part?

Not from within lyx. But you might create a short-cut.

Globally:

Document>Settings>Documentclass: class options:

-> add english to the class options.

For longer parts: ERT \latintext

For English text words: Select and Edit>Character>Custom>Language>English
(make a shortcut).

:-) Not exactly... http://grass.osgeo.org/

This is not an option if I have to mark every single english word and
set the language to english. Impossible... or can this be "filtered"
with some find & replace actions?

Funny, I was reading right a bit about LGR some minutes ago. [*]

What is GRASS, the German Nobel laureate?

Seriously: of course you will need to tell LyX that English words are
English (i.e. set the language in Edit>Text>Custom) otherwise they are set
using the LGR transcription to Greek letters.

> 2. I get lot's of errors related with "\textfont", see screenshot [1]

I supposer they are followups of the first error. Fix: define english as
a global option.

Both of the following don't print an "Appendix" or "Παράρτημα" at
all :-(

#1
\AtBeginDocument{%
\renewcommand\appendixname{\textgreek{Par\char136rthma}}%
}

#2
\AtBeginDocument{%
\renewcommand{\appendixname}{\textgreek{Par\char136rthma}}%
}
