Snow Leopard, The Missing Manual from OReilly publishers is an extremely
good book. It describes in detail what the window controls look like and any
keystrokes, if applicable, etc. I highly recommend it.

Re: a big big problem with a drive

2010-08-12 Thread Sarah Alawami
I'm replying with the error message. it is the following I managed to reproduce
when plugging in the drive. Now mind you this thing works very well, flawlessly
in fact under windows.

NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s5
at /Volumes/Untitled because the following problem occurred:

$MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/rdisk1s5': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

Ok what does this mean? And how can I fix it?

Re: a big big problem with a drive

2010-08-12 Thread Erik Heil
Hi.
First of all, I'm going to assume that you don't have a RAID setup. If you
did, you'd likely know about it. So, just ignore those errors. To fix this
error, reboot into Windows, enter cmd.exe and when you get to the prompt,
type chkdsk /F and the drive letter Windows assigns to it. Windows will
most likely complain about inconsistent entries in the MFT (similar to old
FAT filesystems on floppy disks or other media.) Go ahead and have Windows
fix those errors. When the process is complete, try mounting the filesystem
again. You shouldn't get any errors at this point. Note that Windows is a
bit conservative about displaying errors--in this case ntfs 3G did you a
favor. While not serious, there is a potential for these errors to become
much more serious over time.

When you get your Skype running, you can go to Skype preferences' in the menu!
You can choose to have Skype launch automatically when you start your mac up!
That's under general, Next to general heading is the tool bar interact with

Like under the heading notifications you can choose to have vo announce when
one of your contacts comes online by name, or when they are calling you also by
name!
Others... new contact request, sms voice mail Etc.
you can also choose to use sounds or tones that you might have!

Re: Skype.

2010-08-12 Thread Geoff Waaler
Thanks Justin and Focus,

The Start Skype upon system start box is checked by default. I don't use Skype
much so I unselected it. Subsequent to posting I discovered that I can launch
Skype from my recently used submenue under the Apple menu, but I still don't
see it in either the SpotLight or applications.

I gather from Justin's post that sorting is the only way to determine a
contact's status. This would probably work, but one wouldn't know if a
particular contact has not yet shared details.

Thanks again and I'll keep playing.

You

anything to switch bluetooth connections?

2010-08-12 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Hi list,

I just hooked up my bluetooth keyboard to my macbook after a busy week and a
half, and loving the reactivity of the thing :)

I was wondering though, as i am about to get a mac mini with sl server, i will
be doing a lot of testing with the aim of getting the IT pro certification. I
know, its nothing much in terms of real knowledge but its probably a good thing
to have when confronted with various situations.

So what i'd like to do is being able to switch from macbook to mac mini with a
keyboard shorcut. I wanted to also pair a set of bluetooth headphones so i can
just whip up the keyboard switch stuff on and i'm computerizing around.

Anyone tried this setup before?

As i am installing a sl server at the office, i won't even need to move to the
other room unless bluetooth is bad with walls?

I know there is a better solution through vpn perhaps from my own unit, but if
this is possible then via iphone would be even better since i might be
administering the server from another country

Any help greatly appreciated

Best regards,

Three-Finger Flick

2010-08-12 Thread Ana G
Hi all,

How do you flick up and down with three fingers?

I'm trying to learn to scroll through a list or scroll to the next or previous
screen with the touch pad, but I don't seem to be doing the gesture correctly.

I'm putting three fingers down on the touch pad all at once and sliding them
toward the top or bottom edge, like a rake or comb.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

niki plus

2010-08-12 Thread Nancy Badger
I'm so excited! I can actually answer a question for once instead of asking
them! I use Niki plus and I like it a lot. The sensor was $19.99 or
something like that. I bought the shoes at an outlet mall and they were around
$44.00. You just have to make sure it is a niki plus shoe. There are many
different types of shoes that go from reasonable to very expensive. When I
work out I use a treadmill. I start the niki plus and than start the
treadmill. I like it because it gives calories burned, distance etc. It also
has a history. You have to calibrate it just like if you had a pedometer. Let
me know if you have further questions.

Re: Strange behavior from adium

Do you have growl installed? I think adium offers to install that, and this can

Whenever someone signs in or out, voiceover will say row 1 expanded as if I

adium window. The row number is different each time, probably referring to
the row that contains the group that the contact belongs to.

I have Adium linked to my Facebook account, so I have a lot of contacts, and
they are constantly coming and going. I turned off the audio notifications,
but hearing table rows being expanded all of the time will soon drive me to
stop using Adium with facebook. Is there a setting somewhere that can be
changed to stop this? I'd prefer it to be something I can do in Adium.
Changing a voiceover verbosity setting would lose output that may be useful
in other situations. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Mike,

I did recently install growl, but Adium isn't set to use it for any
notifications. The other tip about turning off groups in the view menu
solved it perfectly.

For some reason, adium installs an old version of growl, but upgrading
to the latest version improved the way growl interacts with voiceover.
In fact, in the display settings there is an option to speak growl
notifications instead of showing them on screen. I have this turned on
so that if some future application doesn't have it's own option for
speaking events, I can have it use growl if that is an option.

While I'm writing, I want to thank you for your incredible series of
podcasts. Hearing you demonstrate things helped to clarify stuff that I
had read in other places. I had almost decided on a Mac already, but
your podcasts settled the issue. These files should be put together in
one place, and prominently linked on sites dealing with voiceover. It
was a coincidence that I heard about them at all, and then I had to dig
way back into the BlindCoolTech archives to get all of them.

Thanks,

Justin

Do you have growl installed? I think adium offers to install that, and
this can cause problems with voice over, if growl is installed, you
might try removing it.

Hi all,

I'm getting some strange behavior from voiceover when adium is
running. Whenever someone signs in or out, voiceover will say row 1
expanded as if I was working with the list of contacts. This happens
if I am not even in the adium window. The row number is different each
time, probably referring to the row that contains the group that the
contact belongs to.

I have Adium linked to my Facebook account, so I have a lot of
contacts, and they are constantly coming and going. I turned off the
audio notifications, but hearing table rows being expanded all of the
time will soon drive me to stop using Adium with facebook. Is there a
setting somewhere that can be changed to stop this? I'd prefer it to
be something I can do in Adium. Changing a voiceover verbosity setting
would lose output that may be useful in other situations. Any advice
is appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

Grade two input with the language pack?

2010-08-12 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi friends,

A few weeks ago there was discussion on the subject of grade two input and some
one recommended installing a language pack to add grade two input support. I
did that, and it gave me French, spanish, Swedish, and all kinds of goodies.
It also gave me US unicode. Can any one tell me how I get grade two braille
input? It seems the language pack installed successfully.

Thanks,

Erik Burggraaf
