Re: navigon or apple maps?

2013-10-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello John,

One thing you need to bear in mind when it comes to GPS apps, is that most of
them require a 3G connection as the maps are not resident on the idevice.
Navigon maps are resident, so it can be used in areas where data roaming would
cost you a fortune. This is probably more relevant to people outside the US,
but it is certainly worth noting. I also think that Navigon uses less battery
than most other solutions.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: navigon or apple maps?

2013-10-03 Thread Sandi Jazmin Kruse
hi, when i drive somewhere i use the map app that is on my iPhone.
My only disappointment is this, the voice is so low that when on the
highway you can hardly hear its instructions, and therefore have too
move your eyes, head too look what is on the screen. Have not used
Navigon at all so am not sure how good it is. The only thing i wish
apples inbuilt map had is lain change assist, driving round copenhagen
is really interesting sometimes without it.

Re: Lost voiceover audio after playing with Bluetooth headset…

2013-10-03 Thread Alex Hall
Well, I finally got a sighted person to select my normal output. Oddly, cmd-f5
was completely useless after that, giving me an error sound. The reason the
computer didn't shut down before was that Xcode wanted me to install the new
SDKs and agree to the updated license terms, which of course I didn't know. My
question now is: is this a vo bug or something in OS10 itself? When using
bluetooth audio, is there a way to switch back to the regular sound output
device, perhaps an order of steps one must perform to stop this from happening?
thanks.

Re: Lost voiceover audio after playing with Bluetooth headset…

2013-10-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Alex,

I've had that sort of thing happen on one of my older XServe's at work. They
don't have built-in sound so I use either USB speakers or USB headset. I've
just tried it in the first state, whether VO was on or off I wouldn't know. If
it didn't work, then I just pressed cmd-w a few times, Escape a few times for
good measure, then VO-f5 to hopefully turn VO on, went through the steps again
and it usually worked. If you get sighted assistance, that's great, but if you
get tired of waiting, just try again after attempting to turn VO on. You
really can't hurt anything.

By the way, you said something in your original post about hearing noise out of
the internal speakers. Is that VO noise that you're hearing, but just no
speech? If so, you may just have muted VO speech instead. To turn that back
on, you can press VO-f8 to open the VO Utility, cmd-3 to go to the Speech
options, tab twice then press the space bar and it should turn back on.

Later...

navigon or apple maps?

2013-10-03 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi list:

Just wanted to get some thoughts on this. I have, and use, both Apple's
built-in Maps and Navigon. I'm not really leaning towards one over the other
at present, so thought I'd get some additional input.

Which do you prefer, and why? Is one better in certain situations, IE driving,
than the other?

Ever curious one here. And thanks in advance!

Re: Mountain Lion Automator Problem

2013-10-03 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi Jane,

The only thing I can say at this point is that I've run in to weirdness in
Automator many times. Sometimes the workflow document gets messed up some how
and I've had to throw it away and start over.

You might also try ignoring the text from textedit action and manually enter
something in the second action just to see what happens. I really have no idea
why it isn't working for you.

Re: Digest for macvisionaries@googlegroups.com - 4 Messages in 1 Topic

2013-10-03 Thread Helena Fehr
Have you tried going to the sounds' preferences on your Mac? I'm assuming that
this is happening to your Mac. If it is, if you go to sounds, and then select
the output tab, VO-space or tab to the table, you may be able to select whether
you want output sounds to go to your speakers or to the headset. If that still
doesn't work, try shutting off the machine, and restarting it. If you can't
shut it down because of no voice, (I know this is not the greatest for a
computer), hold the power down until you hear the computer shutting off, and
then wait for a few seconds, and restart the computer like you normally do.
That usually works for me.
God bless!!!

Re: Lost voiceover audio after playing with Bluetooth headset…

2013-10-03 Thread Tim Kilburn
Yes, a few more steps.

• VO-m to go up to the Apple menu.
• Down arrow once to open the menu and press "s" "y" to go to System Prefs.
• Press tab once.
• Press "s" "o" "u" to move to the Sound Pref button then press VO-space to
activate the pane.

The rest should work like Ricardo mentioned:

• VO-right twice to land on the Output tab.
• VO-space to Activate.
• VO-cmd-t to go to the Table of devices.
• Up arrow lots of times to get to the top of the list.

The first one in the list should be the built-in sound.

HTH.

Totally off topic

2013-10-03 Thread Helena Fehr
Hi, all! This is totally off the topic and has nothing to do with Macs or
iPhones and stuff, but I figure if you use VoiceOver, you're probably visually
impaired like me, or know someone who is, and I'm not sure who else to ask
about this, but I'm wondering if any of you know anything about twon-vision
books. I'm looking to buy a set of them that have Bible stories for children,
preferrably with tactile pictures as well so that we can all enjoy them, or at
lease ones that describe the pictures in braille, if not tactile ones. Some
Docter Sus books would be nice too. I'm going on a Mission Exposure trip way up
north in January so I'm looking for books I can take along to read to the kids
and in that way minister to tehm about the love of Jesus. I'm also wondering
about some good deals on boardgames, and stuff like checkers and chess, maybe
soem card games and stuff too. If anyone has ideas, or can recommend good
deals, that would be reat. I'd prefer to buy the stuff so I don't have to
borrow it from somewhere and then have it get wrecked up there, and then have

Re: Point Finder equivalent for IOS

2013-10-03 Thread Alex Hall
I think you want Blindsquare. It is $25, but does what you want and a lot more.
For instance, it can announce intersections, alert you within a radius (such as
200 meters so you can pull a bus cord), keep announcing where a point is
relative to you as you try to find it, and more. It can even run in the
background using A Capella speech.

Point Finder equivalent for IOS

2013-10-03 Thread Dan Rathburn

Hello,

There's an Android app called Point Finder that allows the user to mark and
name a specific point using GPS. For example, you can mark the intersection
of two sidewalks and the app will guide you back to that point. I seem to
recall a discussion of an IOS app that did the same thing. Is there such a
critter?

Thanks,

Dan

Subject: My phone no longer recognizes me?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone might have a good answer for me.

If you recall, I emailed mentioning that there had been a change regarding
my own personal contact information in my contacts list on my IPhone.

Well, when I was using Siri, I noticed it no longer called me by name and
didn't seem to know who I was. Also, I noticed that when I'd look in my
contacts list, before actually going through the list, it would say
something like "My number" and then say my number. This time, it no longer
presents my number.

Did I somehow unregister my phone or do something with the information my
phone had about me? How do I recover it?

Do I have to do something via Itunes, or go somewhere in the settings?

Any help would be appreciated, please. Thank you.

Jim

Re: Fastest Way to Scan Books?

2013-10-03 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Sandi.

I like the idea about the hovercam, but there are a few things that you need to
be aware of. There is a problem with hovercam if you run windows under vmware,
I do not know, if it has been fixed. The twain driver will not work under
vmware. I have tried one of these cameras, it would have been great for me
too, because my hands have difficulties lifting the books all the time, I had
so many problems with that camera, I did not get very good results. I tried
everything, at last I got sighted assistance, and he could not get these good
results too. Maybe mine was broken or maybe something special with the light
conditions maybe my books or something else. I had to send my camera back, it
costed a lot of money, and they were very quickly to refund the price for the
camera, so maybe something was wrong.

I like the idea about a camera solution. I have had some promising results with
standscan and taking pictures with my phone, but we really miss an app that
will take the pictures itself and make a PDF that we can recognize with
finereader.

Best regards Annie.

Hello Jim and all:

Hopefully you and your phone have not had a disagreement recently . maybe
you did not take out the trash . :).

No worries. I am presuming that you are using IOS 7.0? the my number entry
no longer appears at the top of the contact list . so you are good there.

If you go into accounts in iTunes, you can check your billing information.
that will verify your name and your nickname if you typed one in. If
everything is good, close out of there and give siri another try.

If you would like something less exploratory to try, go to settings,
general, then siri. there is a button that says siri on . double tap and
turn it off. then double tap and turn it back on. that might address your
challenge.

Hopefully this information proves useful to you. Please let us know.

take good care and I wish you enough.

Thank you.

Jim

Re: My phone no longer recognizes me?

2013-10-03 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Jim and all:

Hopefully you and your phone have not had a disagreement recently … maybe you
did not take out the trash … :).

No worries. I am presuming that you are using IOS 7.0? the my number entry no
longer appears at the top of the contact list … so you are good there.

If you go into accounts in iTunes, you can check your billing information. that
will verify your name and your nickname if you typed one in. If everything is
good, close out of there and give siri another try.

If you would like something less exploratory to try, go to settings, general,
then siri. there is a button that says siri on … double tap and turn it off.
then double tap and turn it back on. that might address your challenge.

Hopefully this information proves useful to you. Please let us know.

take good care and I wish you enough.
