Re: Backup Strategies
I wouldn't use Match as a backup, first because your lossless rips will all be downgraded to 256 KB AAC, and second because not all tracks are eligible. It is an excellent solution, but for conserving space on your iOS device more than anything, IMO. My iPad has Match off; my iPod and iPhone have it on. When the 128 GB iPhone 6 plus lands on my doorstep, I won't need Match on it, either. JMO. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Deleting an App on the iPhone 5 S
Ok, two ways. find the app on screen, double tap and hold until it makes the burble sound, take finger off, wait a pause, it'll say Editing, I clicked left and right so it told me again what app it was on, and it said double tap to delete. So that's good as one way. I pressed the Home key to get out of that editing mode. Second, settings/general/useage, there's a button in there to show all apps; use it. Then flick down for your app and double tap; there's size details in there, and a delete button, so use that and it takes you back to your app list. This is good if you can't find which screen it is on. Re: warning e-mail about gmail addresses leak
True, I used to get these off-the-wall messages, supposedly from friends of mine on facebook, telling me things like I am making crazy money using this system, and would give me a link to click on, and I knew none of my friends would've written something like that, especially the one I got that from who at the time, ran a day care center out of her home. I connected to it to check my e-mail address. It opened in Russian and from there there was a link to the US version and Spanish version and possibly others as well. I now worry that the whole thing was spam and I may have revealed my address to a hacker. Re: Format external drive
If security is set to a simple format, as is the default, then the filesystem header and partition tables will be laid out, and this takes almost no time whatsoever. If you set security level to anything above 0%, though, you can expect to wait a good while as the entire disk is written over. I'd advise using the Partition tab rather than the Erase tab, setting it to 1 partition, and hitting options to choose the right scheme (GUID for Mac). That way you partition and erase in one step, and you get full control over the use the disk will be put to. Re: Format external drive
I could always do it over again just to be more familiar with the process. The first time I did it, I looked at the drive's volume name and it had not changed to what I had entered. I figured the 0% was a quick format as in Windows. This had been formatted with NTFS so looked at the security options and chose 100%. I think Time Machoine said it was 245gigs so that is half the drive right there. Knowing how long some tasks may take, I plan my day around them. :) From The Believer. . . . . . what if it were true? ancient.ali...@icloud.com On 9/14/2014 9:49 AM, Sabahattin Gucukoglu wrote: If security is set to a simple format, as is the default, then the filesystem header and partition tables will be laid out, and this takes almost no time whatsoever. Tweaking Mountain Lion
Now for some smaller questions. In Mail (Mountain Lion) is it possible to simplify things and get rid of Smart Folders? Or at least have a setup like that used in Thunderbird where I only see my mail accounts in the left pane, open one and only see the associated mailboxes. I am not using a unified mailboxes there. Also in Thunderbird it has Local Folders to which emails can be moved to be stored on the local drive. If Mail uses that concept, does it have a similar name? Is Preview the archiving utility? Is it all one needs or is a 3rd party app like The Unarchiver needed? I have Voiceover set to my liking but when system related information is spoken, its I think using default settings. Can this be changed? Currently I use iTunes in Windows to backup my iPhone. How should I transfer this task over to the Mac? This is it for now, I hope. Thanks. Since then, I've purchased a book on the subject, and its my hope that i'll be better equipped to deal with my potential new computer as a whole. VoiceOver is part of the OS I know, but whitch OS works best in the way of accessibility, i.e., Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Tiger? Which model of the macBook is the most usable and popular for blind users? i don't need anything with extreme graphics, and don't think this would have any impact on VoiceOver describing labeled graphics. Aren't that type of graphics and display more visually appealing for the sighted? I know windows 8 is out, but feel the OS has changed drastically, and feel a change is needed. I'm not sure if Apple Care plans cover spills and scratches, this is the only reason I can gather to go with bestbuy's protection plan, in addition to applecare. do users ever extend appleCare plans, to two years, or whatever the maximum allows? is there anyway when issuing commands to use only VO keys, minus others to preform all tasks? Re: Returning Subscriber.
Hi Anita. I don't remember if you were on this list when I joined 4 years ago, but if so, welcome back. If you end up buying a new Mac, odds are whenever you do, it'll probably be preloaded with the new OS, Yosemite. If it doesn't, Mavericks has done what I need it to do. As for older OS's I don't think Apple has Mountain Lion on the mac App Store anymore. And you can forget about Tiger because chances are that your new Mac won't support it. As for asking questions about my Mac and Voiceover, I hardly ever contact Apple Accessibility. I ask all my questions right here and most people are very knowledgeable. Good luck on whatever computer you decide to buy. question about restoring iPhone from iTunes
Hi all: Quite recently, today in fact, I had opportunity to DFU my phone. As you may be aware, this resets the phone to factory defaults, installs the current public version of iOS, and makes you restore the phone from a backup. No problem, I backed up today before this became an issue, so all was good. However, when I restored, all of my folders came over, contents exactly where they should be, but I had 4 pages of apps instead of the 2 I had when I made the backup. It turns out the iTunes library has a bunch of apps I installed previously on my phone but have since uninstalled. So once the backup was restored, I was then also given all of the apps I didn't want on my phone any more. Is there a way to make iTunes only restore the apps in a particular backup? I could have restored from iCloud and just had the apps that were on my phone, but this method seemed like it was going to be faster and it probably was. However, deleting 2 pages worth of apps wasn't how I wanted to spend a few minutes of my time this afternoon. Thanks in advance for any help/input. Best, -John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. As for asking questions about my Mac and Voiceover, I hardly ever contact Apple Accessibility. I ask all my questions right here and most people are very knowledgeable. Good luck on whatever computer you decide to buy. Re: Bible Programs Revisited
Cheryl, No problem. In short, the interface works, but the text display is blank as far as VoiceOver can see. And, I did verify with my sighted wife that, indeed, the bible is visually present on the screen. As I recall, VoiceOver reports Eloquent has no windows. Also, as I stated in my previous MSG, I sent two emails to the developer reporting the situation. Again, keep in mind, this only happened after installing Mavericks. Upto that point, everything was fine. I even upgraded to a later version of Eloquent a bit later, 4.2 I think, still no joy. So, @ this point I remain sad but hopeful that the situation will be resolved @ a later date. Hope this answered your questions, CJ On Sep 14, 2014, at 4:56 PM, Cheryl Homiak cah4...@icloud.com wrote: Yes, I did know about the change to eloquence and as I recall keith did too. Re: Returning Subscriber.
All that is covered in the article I sent in my last email. The Pro has a couple more ports, but the major difference is in the internals; the Pro is more powerful, but is overkill if you just need a machine for email, web browsing, wordprocessing, and similar tasks that don't need huge amounts of processing power. Re: Storage Options and Hard Drives.
SSDs aren't like thumb drives. They are much more reliable and don't have that problem of write limits. If you have the money for one, than that's great. But, you don't need anything like this unless your doing something like audio or video production. They are much more costly. WD My Book or My Passport will do just fine for most people. If you choose that option, don't git the version for Mac. it cost more and all you need to do is git the PC version and reformat it. Re: Storage Options and Hard Drives.
Flash memory does have a read/write limit. After a certain amount of cycles, a particular transistor in the memory will stop working reliably. However, it will take years before that starts to happen, and all flash drives, SD cards, and other flash memory is the same. Besides, mechanical drives have limits too, and they are more susceptible to vibration, drops, temperature, and other factors. Basically, either type of drive will be more likely to fail after several years, but during those years, flash will be unbelievably faster and more reliable than mechanical storage. Go for flash, is m point. :) On Sep 15, 2014, at 12:14 AM, The Believer ancient.ali...@icloud.com wrote: You are thinking of CD and DVD discs which come in read- only or rewritable. Re: Storage Options and Hard Drives.
Actually it has an erase limit which is what happens when data is written. The data can still be read though.. USB and SSD are basically the same as they are both flash, but they are different architectures. SSDs are vastly more reliable than thumb drives.
