Re: One Voice Only In Mac?

2020-12-10 Thread Brad Snyder
When in the VoiceOver Utility, you can find the Speech category, by interacting
with the Utility Categories table, and navigating to Speech. Once Speech has
been located/selected, stop interacting with the table, and VO + right arrow
into the Speech setting area.

As an alternative, when in the VoiceOver Utility, pressing CMD + 3, will select
the Speech category.

Fazil,

Open Voiceover utility with vo+f8, then arrow down to the category “speech”,
then find the table of active voices, you may only have one as I understand
your setup. Interact with it with vo+shift+down arrow, find the edit button.
Press it & this should open the window where you can configure your voice. You
may have to at some point expand the dialog so listen out for the item which
says collapsed. Press vo+spacebar on it to expand it. Now as you move through
the dialog you can adjust the various parameters. You need to choose the same
voice for system voice, keyboard voice, etc. This should help you. You need
to press ok button at the end of the dialog to save the changes.

Re: Function-Keys On Apple Magic Keyboard?

2020-12-10 Thread Brad Snyder
On a Mac computer, by default, when pressed by themselves, the F-keys perform
hardware functions, such as adjusting screen brightness, media controls, volume
controls, and so on. In order to have the F-keys perform as normal F-keys, the
Fn key must be pressed in combination with the desired F-key.

This behavior can be changed in keyboard preferences, so that the behavior of
the F-keys is reversed.

downgrade for now until everything gets better.

I’ve searched for it, but find Big Sur only.

I was wrong.
I just tried it using the Mail app on Catalina, and I was able to select
multiple items using the same method as described for selecting multiple items

mac OS big sur: progressively getting buggier and buggier as I leave it

2020-12-10 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi all,

I can say I am thoroughly disssapointed by the big sur experience. It's trying
to act like an ipad, is schizophrenic with the voices, the touch bar almost
never works, and a host of other things like the trackpad being overtly
sensitive, some of the keyboard commander shortcuts not responding immediately,
swipes giving me some other things I didn't ask for, in short it is hindering
on my productivity.

the very fact that I recently purchased a macbook pro 16 inch fully souped up,
which doesn't come cheap, I'm quite frustrated at this.

The big difference with this big little sir is that things start to degenerate
the longer I use the laptop. The rest is fine, but I'm really annoyed by this
voice that keeps changing all the time.

This is my rant

Granted I intend going back to the start of this thread, but I believe

Hi all,

This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. In a perfect world, I
would buy both a new Mac and a new iPad, but that would stretch my funds a
little more than I want to stretch them. So I’ve been trying to sort out which
device I want to upgrade this year, and which one next. That has gotten me
thinking about why I like my iPad. I do like it, there’s no question about
that. But as a device, it really doesn’t make much sense. I agree with Joe,
that an iPad is basically just a big iPhone. And, since I can’t see the screen,
there’s really no reason for me to have an iPad in the first place. But even
knowing that, I like my iPad, and am very intrigued with the idea of getting a
newer, faster one. But I can’t really come up with a good reason why.
Everything Joe said in his video is right. The Mac is a much better
proeductivity device, and the iPhone is really all the screen I need. And, it’s
faster than my iPad. So what is it about the iPad that makes me like it? Notice
I’m sitting here drinking my coffee and typing this email on it, not on my Mac
and not on my iPhone.

This is more of a rhetorical post than anything else, but it’s something that
has really come to fascinate me. If anyone else wants to chime in, I’d love to
hear people’s thoughts.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread Ryan Mann
IPad as laptop replacement? I guess it depends on how you define a laptop.
Xcode, Apple’s development environment is not available on an iPad, but it is
available on a Mac. Since I use Xcode, I couldn’t replace my Mac with an iPad.
If you have a laptop that you just use for simple things such as email,
reading books and web browsing, I guess you could replace your laptop with an
iPad. I could see replacing one of those expensive blindness note takers with
an iPad and an affordable Braille display such as an Orbit.

Hi Tracy,

I totally get the cute factor. Back in the 90s, when I got my first dial-up
modem, my husband and I were in the local computer store. We found this cute,
tiny modem, and in the middle of the store full of male computer nerds, I cried
out, "Oh, it's so cute!" My husband was mortified. lol

I still get a kick out of being able to cary around so many books with me,
either on my braille display or my i-device. I remember going on vacation as a
kid and being able to take only one book, because by the time we put four
braille volumes in the car, that was all the room there was. It makes me so
happy to know I can now have as many books as I want, wherever I go.

And I think you are on to something with the combination of keyboard and touch.
I do like that when I want to move quickly to a different part of the screen, I
have the option to just reach out and tap it.

And yeah. When I think about giving up my laptop, and just having an MBA, I
hate the thought of opening up my mail, and seeing work email before I'm even a
quarter of the way through my first cup of coffee. It is nice having two
devices.

So, shiny toy syndrome or not, I think I've decided to upgrade one device this
year, and one next. So now the question is ... which one to upgrade first! 藍
Cheers,
Donna

I'm not sure what you're asking. Can you elaborate? What more would you like to
do with the two devices connected?

Re: Selecting text from a PDF

2020-12-10 Thread Brad Snyder
I would suggest opening the PDF document in Preview, as you have done, then
highlighting the entire document using CMD + A, and copying the selected text
to the clipboard. Then open TextEdit, and paste the clipboard contents to a
blank TextEdit document, and hopefully you will now have an editable copy of
the PDF’s contents.

Let me know if this works.

Re: Selecting text from a PDF

2020-12-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I can get simple phrases to be copied using the VO-enter move cursor and
VO-enter a second time. This will only work for me on chunks of text that are
part of the same phrase with no changes in text size or fonts.
On web sites, usually if you can get one or two words selected, the rest can be
selected, and I thought I could do this on PDF's, but had no luck.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

Cheers,
Donna

 Hi all,

This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. In a perfect
world, I would buy both a new Mac and a new iPad, but that would stretch
my funds a little more than I want to stretch them. So I’ve been trying to
sort out which device I want to upgrade this year, and which one next.
That has gotten me thinking about why I like my iPad. I do like it,
there’s no question about that. But as a device, it really doesn’t make
much sense. I agree with Joe, that an iPad is basically just a big iPhone.
And, since I can’t see the screen, there’s really no reason for me to have
an iPad in the first place. But even knowing that, I like my iPad, and am
very intrigued with the idea of getting a newer, faster one. But I can’t
really come up with a good reason why. Everything Joe said in his video is
right. The Mac is a much better proeductivity device, and the iPhone is
really all the screen I need. And, it’s faster than my iPad. So what is it
about the iPad that makes me like it? Notice I’m sitting here drinking my
coffee and typing this email on it, not on my Mac and not on my iPhone.

This is more of a rhetorical post than anything else, but it’s something
that has really come to fascinate me. If anyone else wants to chime in,
I’d love to hear people’s thoughts.
 Cheers,
 Donna

As I noticed, f11 and f11 doesn’t exist, do they?

Re: mac OS big sur: continued issue with localised voice taking over every second line

2020-12-10 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Yuma,

I experience similar issues using german voices. VoiceOver switches between
voices randomly. But not all the time but sometimes. I’ve been watching the
voice section in VoiceOver becomming increasingly buggy from OS to OS.
Hopefully Apple will fix this quickly.

All the best

Quicktime in MacOs X Catalina problem

2020-12-10 Thread 'Fann2000' via MacVisionaries
Hi listers,
First, I am new to the list. So, greetings to all.
Secondly, I used Quictime Pro with some success in Mac OS X previous versions,
but under Catalina, the interface is completely different. Apparently QT opens
Screenshot App. I can't figure out how to do screen recordings anymore. Can
someone help please?
Thank you very much.

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread Traci Duncan
Shiny new toy syndrome, I like that!

Personally, I love my iPad mini. The size is brilliant. I think this harkens
back to my childhood of wanting to be like the sighted students holding
textbooks or having diaries. It just feels cute in my arms. Silly, I know.
Braille books were huge! There’s the psychology for you. *insert face palm.

On a more adult level, lol! When a keyboard is paired with the mini it is like
a touch laptop. I like the combo of typing on a keyboard, with the ability to
swipe on the screen. Way back in 2010, I had the original iPad with a Zagg
keyboard case. I thought it was the coolest thing! An accessible touch laptop.

I also like having a separate iOs device, so my phone isn’t doing everything.

Interesting discussion here.

That's interesting, because when I hold down the FN key and touch the touch

Re: FN key on Touch Bar macbook

2020-12-10 Thread Brad Snyder
Hi Donna,
TouchBar settings have no effect on the behavior of NumberRow keys, when
pressing the Fn key, with or without the VO modifier.
Fn key by itself does nothing. Fn key plus VO modifier, will allow the
NumberRow keys to perform VO functions usually performed when using the VO
modifier in combination with F-keys.

HTH.

Re: FN key on Touch Bar macbook

2020-12-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Thanks for the correction, Brad. Because of how I have my unction keys set up,
holding down FN and VO and pressing the number keys is the same for me pretty
much as having function keys which is why I wrote what I did. But your right,
if someone has the function keys set to perform other functions, it wouldn’t be
the same.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Obviously, I’m not entirely sure, hence my post. :) What I can say concretely
is:
I love that it’s smaller and lighter. I have mine paired with a Logitech
keyboard which also serves as a case for the iPad. So the whole package is one
very portable unit.

Though for the reasons I wrote a minute ago, it doesn’t quite feel like a
laptop, I love that I can open Pages, work on a document, and then play a game
on the same device. Theoretically that would now be possible on the MBA, but
I’m unclear at this point whether all iPhone apps will work on the Mac. Joe has
found that the Blindfold games do not, and I do have several of those on my
i-devices.

I upgraded my phone to the 12 mini, so yeah, the speakers on my iPad are
definitely bigger and better.

The keyboard on my iPad has function keys, where my Mac does not, though that
would change if I got the MBA.

And, last but not least, I like the price tag. Lol Even if I went for the iPad
Air, it’d still be cheaper.

That’s what I’ve got for now. :)
Cheers,
Donna

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
I would say it’s somewhere in between. The iPad is slower, for one thing, and I
find bluetooth keyboards—or at least mine, I don’t have the Apple Magic
keyboard—to be a little bit less efficient than just using the keyboard on my
Mac.

Donna

Messages Very Different in Big Sur

2020-12-10 Thread Steve Matzura
Wow! The conversations list is now a collection, and to send a message
to someone in the conversations collection, you first have to open the
collection and then VO-Right to find the person or thread, not Down
Arrow any more. The good thing is that if you just want to send a new
message, VO-Spacebar will shortcut you right into the text field.

It used to be that as one arrowed through the conversations list, if
there was a conversation with a lot of participants, you'd hear the
first three names and then the phrase "and x others," where x was the
number of others in that conversation. Now I hear all the names. Is
there any way to revert this to the old behavior? It's awfully wordy
otherwise.

mac OS big sur: continued issue with localised voice taking over every second line

2020-12-10 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi All,

So I am still having this random issue whenever I'm working which can only be
described as follows:
prelimiary: voice over alex working fine
1-when scrolling down text edit, every second line stops anouncing, though the
line is full of tex
2-alternatingly alex and empty voice as I keep scrolling
Remedy 1: I toggle voice over on and off
3-This time when voice was empty, it's replaced by the local voice (in my case
Rachel australia,)
4-At this point, alternates for a few lines between alex and rachel using
alex's pitch
5-As I keep scrolling, alternates between alex and a normal pitch of rachel
6-I keep going on, and it becomes alex only

However, this occurs intermittently during the day, and I keep having to toggle
voice over on/off and do the same shenanigan.

I checked again in my voice over utility/speech/voices and all categories are
set to alex with every parameter the same across all the columns.

Anyone have this issue persisting?

Thanks,

Yuma

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
To my mind an Ipad with an attached keyboard is more comparable to a
laptop than to an Iphone. Am I wrong about that?

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Thanks for your thoughts on blind folks using Ipads, Donna. I've often
wondered about that.

Personally, I've never owned one and have no particular desire to get
one for exactly the reason you cite. I can only see two arguments in
favor:

* Potential superior speakers for better room filling sound. Is
* this a fact? Or just a speculative possibility?

* Some apps will run on Ipad, but not on Iphone. To my knowledge
*   this is also false.

So, what's the attraction?

Best,

Janina

Re: The Psychology of technology

2020-12-10 Thread Angie Nutt
Hi

I’ve had a couple of iPads in the past and particularly liked the mini but then
I got a MacBook Air as wanted to try one out of curiosity. I find no need for
both so no longer use iPad. I prefer typing with my Mac but that’s possibly
because the iPad cases with keyboards which I had left a bit to be desired. The
upshot: I think I’d like to always have either iPad or MacBook, have no use for
both at this time. If you fancy a new iPad in particular then go for it.

All the best
Angie

Re: How to select items to be moved

2020-12-10 Thread Lorie McCloud
are you talking about noncontiguous items?
for that, open the folder containing the items you want to copy or move then
interact. vo-arrow down to the first item you want to select. press
vo-command-return on it. continue in that way till all desired items have been
selected. if the items you want are all together then it's a simple matter of
holding down the shift key as you arrow down through them.
