Re: A broken button on Mac

2021-06-08 Thread Muhammad Fayed
Is it my bad to choose Voiceover on Mac vs NVDA on windows (plus what makes Mac
better for me as a developer)?!

MacBook Pro is meant for productivity and professional users, why is it my
fault that the best way to increase my productivity to use arrow keys for
navigation and toggling quick nav on and off?!

Getting another keyboard is just telling me that Mac mini is more portable than
MBP.

I hope there will be better solution than moving around with an external
keyboard and trackpad. (I mentioned trackpad since I use it in some cases were
keyboard shortcut won’t work because of conflicts)

I hope I could get to Apple authorized service provider soon to discuss a
solution for it.

Mohamed E. Fayed

2021-06-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jonathan,

The sysadminctl commands are the replacement for the dscl commands related to
much of the user control. I believe that the dscl set is going to be
deprecated in a future release of the MacOS. I’ve used the sysadminctl to
remotely enable/disable the Guest account as well as manipulate the secure
token status on APFS systems. FYI, the secure token is often the main factor
in causing people grief when erasing their systems. There is always supposed
to be an Admin user with the secure token attached, but sometimes, it gets
messed up when during the initial user setup process.

Re: Help with new external hard drive

2021-06-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Yes, .mov and .mp4 are both fine for completed projects. Both are readable by
QuickTime and both are upload able to YouTube. In normal circumstances, Those
do sound like completed projects, so moving them to the external should be
fine. There may still be project components left within your iMovie library,
but they will not affect the end product that you’ve created. These are left
in iMovie in case you wish to redo anything. They are good to be deleted if
you don’t think that you’ll ever need those original clips. yes, you should be
able to do the cmd-c then cmd-option-v the .mov and .mp4 files over to the
external. Try it with a not-important file first though as I have seen things
fails on occasion when using the move across volumes. This was long in the
past, so it may be totally fine now, but it’s always good to test on a nothing
file. If you wish to test it on one of your movies, just duplicate one of them
and cmd-c/cmd-option-v the duplicate. If it goes across fine, then you’re good
to go. In case you’re not familiar with the duplicate command, just navigate
to the item you wish to duplicate, then press cmd-d. It will make a copy of
the original file with the word “Copy” added to the end.

HTH.

2021-06-08 Thread FIOGKOS
Hi Tim, again thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I will save the
email as I am not ready to do all of this quite yet. I’m thinking in a few
days. I may have more questions, I hope you don’t mind.
I read your email twice and I have two very simple questions. I have not
uploaded anything to YouTube yet, I have saved my movies on my iPhone therefore
some of the files have the extension.MOV, a few other movies I have saved on
the Mac therefore the extension is MP4
Does this matter? I mean the fact that these movies have different extension
names? Voiceover does announce them as QuickTime movies. They have been saved
after editing. If I move them to the external drive will I lose anything
because of the library’s?
My second question is just I want to confirm if I copy the files and then use
the command option v will be moved to the drive and leave no trace on my Mac?
this is the point of buying an external hard drive, I want to fill up the
external drive and empty out the iMac drive. Thank you again for any help in
advance

Re: Reinstalling big sur on macbook air

2021-06-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,
Be careful when erasing a Big Sur volume, especially on a M1 computer. The last
time I tried this, I accidentally erased the recovery partition, making the
re-install much slower. On M1 Mac,s there is a special security key on a
special partition of the SSD. If you erase this your computer becomes
completely unusable until managed with special tools if I have read my blogs
correctly.
I would be tempted to create a new admin user and then use the user and group
tools to delete your current user. Or else at least find a lists of steps
online to follow.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Interesting that this happened to me today. When I looked at the dialog in:
Window->Activity Mail was doing sending and receiving and once that window
cleared, Mail exited. I'm not sure if the activities window has a way to cancel
out, but you can at least check the status before going to a force quit.

Oh well, how about we come from another direction. In System Preferences,
Desktop & Screen Saver, under the Screen Saver tab, make sure that the
Screen Saver is set to some time further away, like 30 minutes to an hour.
Also, in system Preferences, Battery, we’ll select Battery so we can
check its settings. Make sure that it doesn’t go to sleep for 15 to 20

I believe what you want to do is select your view and then open the view menu

In the dialog that opens there should be a check box to calculate all sizes A

Well, that’s odd. That usually happens when an MDM, or some sort of
Parental Controls has limited your access. I wouldn’t think that that is
 the case here.

Make sure that it doesn’t go to sleep for 15 to 20
minutes when on battery and even longer when on power.

Thanks for the confirmation of the bug and advice on this. I’ve sent a report
via Feedback Assistant.
Just now when trying to follow your suggestions I’m finding the controls in the
battery preferences all to be dimmed out. A restart didn’t make a difference
either. Any other suggestions to try?

Hi Dave,

Yes, I remember that now. You are still in Mojave. Well, a couple of things
to mention.

1. Apple will not update anything other than security patches for Mojave now.
So, contacting Accessibility will give you some possible assistance, but Apple
will not address an issue like that in an older OS.

2. I wonder if your issue has to do with physical keyboard contacts more than
an accessibility issue. That is, maybe your key presses are not always
reacting as they should. You can test this by turning on your Keyboard
commander and pressing any of the keys in that combination to see if they are
responding on every press.

Re: Reinstalling big sur on macbook air

2021-06-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It should be APFS. MacOS 13.4 and up all use APFS. The installer should
actually make your drive APFS even if you’ve formatted it as MacOS Extended
(Journaled), but to save the hassle, just format it as APFS.

Re: Help with new external hard drive

2021-06-08 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

With respect to formatting the drive. It kind of depends on if it is already
formatted from the factory. If it is, it may be formatted and show up on your
Desktop, but be formatted in a format that is read only to the Mac. I suggest
that you do the following before connecting the drive to your Mac:

• go to the Desktop.
• press cmd-comma to bring up Desktop Preferences.
• if the General tab is not selected, select it.
• make sure that the checkbox to show external drives on your Desktop is
checked.
• close this window.
• connect the drive.
• follow the prompts if any appear.
• if the drive simply shows up on the Desktop, then do the following extra
steps.
• make sure you’re in the Finder by pressing VO-shift-d.
• press cmd-shift-u to open the Utilities folder.
• open the Disk Utility app.
• in the table, locate and select your external drive.
• stop interacting with the table and VO-left to the Toolbar. Interact with it.
• locate the Erase button and VO-space to activate.
• give the drive a name and format it as either APFS or MacOS Extended
(Journaled). Then press the Erase button.

After it has finished, press the Done button and quit Disk Utility. You will
now have a properly formatted drive for your Mac. No matter which method you
use, do make sure that it is formatted for the Mac as either MacOS Extended
(Journaled) or APFS for best results on your Mac.

Regarding iMovie and copying, when you create and edit these videos for
YouTube, have you saved the finished version on your internal drive, or just
uploaded directly to YouTube? It is better to keep a version locally, as well
as uploading to YouTube in my experience. Now, if you have the exported
finished copy, then that one is easy to copy and paste to the external drive.
The actual iMovie product is more complicated as it is comprised of both
library and iMovie Project components, unless things have changed lately. The
drive icon will show up on your Desktop if you set the Finder Preferences as
I’ve suggested above, so copying between the internal Macintosh HD and the
external is easy-peasy by the regular copy and paste processes.

HTH.

RE: Mail Question

2021-06-08 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Tim,

That’s a great suggestion. I am one of these individuals who immediately closes
down an app when I am finished using it. I think I will stop doing that with
Mail. I don’t mind an occasional hang, it’s just that right now, it’s been
happening more often than the mail app closing properly. Thus, the annoyance.

Best,

Les

Hi Donna,

When quitting Mail, make sure to wait a while after sending or deleting
messages. When you attempt to quit too quickly after these sorts of tasks,
Mail may be in the middle of polling for new messages, cleaning up mailboxes
etc. So, go press cmd-tab and go to another app and do something, or just
wait about 10 seconds or so before pressing cmd-q to quit Mail. See if you
have better luck.

Re: Mail Question

2021-06-08 Thread Dave Carlson
Also finding that the VO+shift+M menu does not always react, and requires
turning VO off and back on to re-engage.
This reminds me of the old focus issues with keyboard in JAWS. VO seems to lose
focus and needs a little kick in the butt to wake it up. Been happening on
Mojave all along.

Mail Question

2021-06-08 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Donna,

I appreciate your response. Thank you. So it's not my machine! The odd thing
is that sometimes Mail closes as it should, other times, it does not. Kate
from this list indicated the same thing. I wonder why Apple has not fixed
this one. I think I'll write Apple Accessibility about this. Thanks again.
Your assistance is always appreciated.

Best Regards,

Les

Help with new external hard drive

2021-06-08 Thread FIOGKOS
Hi everybody hope you’re doing well. I have a 2013 late I Mac running Catalina
with a 1 TB hard drive.
I am starting my own YouTube channel with cooking episodes. I am using iMovie
to edit and join my Clips together. I am using my iPhone to tape my cooking
shows and transferring the clips to the iMac. I have finished 14 episodes and
my iMac hard drive is already half full so I bought a 4 TB hard drive from the
Apple store. The man at the Apple Store told me the hard drive needs formatting
but he said that when I plug it in the on-screen instructions are pretty
straightforward. My first question is that correct? Do I need to know anything
about using the drive for the first time? My second question is the following I
want to move my iMovie files and some text documents onto the hard drive is it
as easy as copying the files and then using the move command to the drive? How
is moving the files best accomplished?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Regards Zoe

RE: IOS 15 and iPad OS 15 for iPad Mini 4 and iPhone Se 1st generation

2021-06-08 Thread skipper8218
I do not have a spare phone or second iCloud account and am starting to dread
updates now after previous bugs.

I’m not going to install the update in the fall until there is proof that the
release has stabilized.

I commend all the brave beta testers out there!

BETA software is software that the company is making available so that bugs
they could not find are found. If you have a spare machine and perhaps a spare
iCloud account depending on your needs play with the software, and send back
feedback. Now is the time when Apple wants to know what they broke this year.
Not in October when they actually officially release the software. Apple If you
read the statements when signing up for a developer or public beta from Apple,
they put these recommendations near the top.

Hello!

The beta that came out yesterday are for developers. DO NOT INSTALL THEM unless
you are a developer and you have a spare machine around to work with. While the
messages I have seen recently seem to indicate this is a release with very few
issues, there are definitely some changes in iCloud. You could possibly lose
all or part of your items stored on iCloud.

Even the public beta users lists for VoiceOver users is staying pretty mum
about testing the new beta's since the public beta will not be out for about a
month.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: IOS 15 and iPad OS 15 for iPad Mini 4 and iPhone Se 1st generation

2021-06-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn

Re: Any thoughts on the future of MacBook Pros in light of this WWDC?

2021-06-08 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Generally, WWDC never announces new hardware, it is all about the software. The
primary exception is when a completely new architecture like what happened
last year. Even then the hardware announced was specifically aimed at
developers and was leased to developers, not sold.

Re: Mail Question

2021-06-08 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Les,

I have had this problem for a while now, since way before getting the new Mac.
I have no idea what causes it or how to solve it, but I can tell you that
turning VO off, waiting a couple seconds and then turning VO back on usually
allows Mail to close. Sorry I don’t have a better solution, but at least this
is better than nothing.
Cheers,
Donna

Mail Question

2021-06-08 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi All,

So after a week, I can say that things are going really well with my MacBook
Air. I do have one problem which is annoying the daylights out of me. More
often than not, when I quit the Mac App with Command-Q, it hangs. It will
close eventually, but this does not seem to be normal behavior. I have done
a Force Quit initiated with Command Option Escape, but that does not resolve
this issue. Any ideas as to what I can do to get Mail to behave as it
should?

Best,

Les

2021-06-08 Thread josephlhodge
I think too Apple is facing chip shortages as are most other companies and may
just not be able to deliver the quantity they would want. The other factor may
be that they are just not ready to update the 16 model quite yet as that group
are heavy profetionals and they maybe trying to get a even more powerful chip.
This is why listening to rumors is okay but should be taken with a grain of
sault.

Subject: Any thoughts on the future of MacBook Pros in light of this WWDC?

Guys,

I hope this note finds all of you staying safe and healthy and doing well.
I'm’ writing because my wife and I just finished reading the highlights from
the WWDC and were disappointed to see nothing about a new MacBook Pro to go
with the upcoming Mac OS Monterey. Considering that a new iMac came out just
recently, and further considering that it’s been a while since the 16 inch
MacBook Pro got any love, I’m wondering if any of you have any opinions on how
long the current 16 inch machine will remain the flagship of the MacBook line.

Personally, I can’t imagine that sighted users won’t want state of the art
hardware in a 16 inch form factor because they believe in screens and so on.
If I’m wrong,… oh well.

While we don’t necessarily think in visual terms about stuff like this. This
list comprises a group of the most Mac savvy people I know and I’d be
interested if you’d be willing to share your opinions on what the future holds
for laptop hardware in Mac land.

I should get around to saying that my wife and I haven’t upgraded our Mac
hardware since we bought a Mac mini for me and a 27 inch iMac for her in 2010.
We haven’t been able to upgrade the OS on that hardware in years, (10.12.6,)
and we just want to avoid buying new hardware that will, itself be frozen in,
say, one OS upgrade. See the problem?

All of you may decide not to express an opinion on any of this. But I’D be
grateful for any thoughts you’d be willing to share.

Thanks,
Kevin
