Putting a disk image on a USB drive

2013-06-06 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hi folks,

I want to put a disk image of Vinux 4.0 on a USB drive, using disk utility.
Does anyone know if this is possible? If so, how?

Thanks.

ABBYY FineReader Express for Macintosh and Hovercam T5 V

2013-02-25 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hi all,

The Hovercam Express app is indeed accessible with VO; thanks to Matthew for
bringing that to my attention. The only drawback I see is that it is not
possible to access the camera from within ABBYY FineReader Express, so creating
a multi-page file from multiple images is consequently not doable. I had to
scan several pages, making several separate images, and then I had to process
them one at a time, using ABBYY.

Of course, I could be missing something, so if anyone knows how to do this more
efficiently, please do let me know.

ABBYY FineReader Express for Macintosh and Hovercam T5 V

2013-02-25 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hello all,

I for got to mention in my last post that the Hovercam T5 V does not appear to
work with ABBYY FineReader for Mac. I believe Erik expressed an interest in
using it. ABBYY FineReader does not appear to detect that the camera is
plugged in to the Mac, and the software that comes with the camera is
completely inaccessible with VO. Just thought I'd pass that on.

Scanner to use with ABBYY FineReader Express for Mac

2013-02-25 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Just a quick note to all who replied to my request for information about which
scanners work best with ABBYY FineReader Express for Macintosh. After reading
your posts and researching the products that you recommended, I have come to
the conclusion that the Canoscan Lide 110 is a good option; it works very
reliably with ABBYY FineReader, according to Anne Robertson, and it is
relatively inexpensive ($55 through Amazon).

Anyway, thanks again for your replies.

Re: Managing List Subscriptions [was Re: To the Moderator of this list]

2013-01-24 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Thank you.
On Jan 23, 2013, at 2:26 PM, Esther wrote:

Hello Laura, Rafael, J.P., Kimsan, Gigi, and Others

You can manage both the type of your subscriptions (No Email, Email, Digest
Email, or Unsubscribe to permanently leave the list) and the email address(es)
that you use for all your Google Group list memberships by going to the
following URL, which is the page for "Manage My Memberships"

http://groups.google.com/groups/mysubs?hl=en_US&pli=1

This page lets you select the email address used to receive list posts as well
as your subscription type option from pop up menus for each list you subscribe
to under Google Groups. However, this only lets you select the email address
you use from among the valid (posting) email addresses that are already
associated with your account. If you want your subscription to go to a new
email address, navigate to the link on the above page for "My Google account"
to Change your email address, nickname, or password. VO-Space on that link to
navigate to the "Account Overview" page. Then use item chooser menu (VO-I),
type in "Email", and navigate to the section with the Email information for
your account. You can activate the "Edit" link immediately following "Email"
to make general changes to your account, including adding any Email addresses
you want to under the "Change your associated Email addresses" heading by
typing in additional Email addresses into the text box for "Add a new alternate
Email" and then pressing the "Save" button. Alternatively, if you simply want
to change the primary email for the account, on the "Account Overview" page you
can navigate directly to the "Edit" link immediately following the "Primary
email address" info and activate that link.

For more details and answers to related specific questions, check the following
list posts that were found from a search of this list's archives:
• Re: The New Google Groups Site and viewing/changing membership options?
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg64431.html
• Re: Changing list email address and subscription options [was Re: How to stop
receiving mail from the list without unsubscribing?]
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg67853.html

These posts explain various other questions that came up, like reminding users
that if you're prompted to log in with an email address and password, the email
address you use is the one you used to create your Google Account -- it need
not be your current email address. Also, the above procedure of adding email
addresses associated with your account assumes that you have not created
multiple Google Accounts by multiple unsubscribes and creations of new Google
Accounts. You only ever need to modify one account to manage your
subscriptions, and you cannot add multiple email addresses that are already
associated with different Google Accounts that you have forgotten about. If
you do add new Email addresses from the "Account Overview" page, you can
navigate back to the "Manage My Memberships" page and change the pop up menu
buttons for which address is used to receive mail subscriptions. And you can
post to the list using Email addresses from any of the addresses that you have
added, and which appear in the pop-up menu.

If you want to read up or down the linked threads at the Mail Archive for this
list, use Control+p to read previous posts in the thread, and Control+n to read
the next post in the thread. (These shortcut keys are for Safari).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I've successfully installed Linux as a VMWare virtual machine, and it's also
possible to download a USB drive version of Vinux to your Bootcamp Windows

Hello Rafael,

Do you only need English or do you use other languages? This makes a difference.

I hear that DocuScan is the best OCR solution but it requires an internet
connection but it only works for English.

I use ABBYY FineReader Express for Mac and find it works well. However, if you
want to do multipage scanning, it's best to use VueScan to capture the images
as it can handle automatic page feeds, then give the resulting image file to
ABBYY FineReader to process.

ABBYY FineReader comes from the Appstore, but VueScan has to be purchased from
the developer:
www.hamrick.com

I can't tell you the prices as I'm in the Euro zone, but it should come to
under $200 for the second solution. DocuScan is more expensive.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: Pages and APA 6th edition style

If you are looking for software, such as that which works with Microsoft word
to help detect formatting mistakes, I think you may be out of luck.I have
never had any problems using Pages to format my own psychology papers, though,
so you should be able to write papers in APA style in Pages without any

Re: Mac with blackboard

2012-09-25 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
On strictly practical grounds, I would advise you to have a couple of other
browsers available for times like this. I had trouble using Angel, which is
course delivery software like Blackboard, with Safari, and what saved me was
that I also had Windows installed in Bootcamp. Unfortunately, one browser
and/or one operating system is unlikely to meet all of the accessibility needs
of the blind at this time.

Re:

2012-09-20 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Absolutely. Buttons, radio buttons, and checkboxes all are accessible with the
System Access screen reader. If your student does not have this screen reader,
the web-based version of it can be accessed as an online app. Once the student
has logged on to Windows, have him/her go to www.satogo.com. There, the
student will need to set up an account, but after doing so, he/she will be able
to use the web-based version of the screen reader.

My subject line says it. I would like to install Ubuntu on a USB drive, and
I'm wondering if it's possible to do so with the Mac. If anyone on here knows

Thanks.

Hi guys.
I wanted to tell y'all about the scanning program that I saw at the exhibits at
NFB today. True, it costs $1200, but it comes with a camera sort of like the
Purl camera.

I had to get it going for them because the guy that knew about it wasn't at the
table at the time I showed up. He came right after I got it going. It wouldn't
talk at first. Who knows where it was on the screen. Like OpenBook, you don't
use the screen reader while it's running. However, I had to turn their
VoiceOver on, press command q and get out of their program, and then call it
back up again, after I turned off their track pad. The person that was sitting
there keeping watch while the developer was gone for a little bit, I guess was
a Windows user. Anyway, I got the program going.

The developer that came back was very knowledgeable. He told me they had a
former Kurzweil engineer with them. When I did the scan, it reading was
incredibly good, even in the light my husband said was glaring on the paper.

I have a Purl camera I am considering selling. It doesn't have much use on it,
and maybe I ought to sell OpenBook while I'm at it. However, I don't know if I
can. The state gave me OpenBook, but I bought the Purl camera myself. I'll have
to find out what I can do about OpenBook.

RE: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?

It would be nice to have a second screen-reading option. Every screen reader
has its advantages and disadvantages, so it would be nice to be able to use the

Subject: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?

Hello,
After working for more than 3 years with the mac , it's my personal opinionthat
more basic programs are accessible on windows then on the mac platform.

I find it more stable to work on the mac because of the integration of the
screenreader voiceover with the osx.
The fact that the hardware is also adapted for us by the trackpad and the
function-keys with the spoken values.
And of course the flexible way we can install , manage the system with
voiceover support everywhere.

However, we can't e.g. configure dropbox with voiceover while this is possible
on windows, office programs like microsoft office and also iWork's aren't fully
accessible with lay-out tasks, in my opinion there are several usability issues
with the browsers on the mac, some ellements of the os , like
Tables, on websites and on numbers and pages, are very difficult to navigate
e.g. you can't search for edit-fields on websites while they are in a table and
in pages, you can't work with tables on a comfortable way.
the icon's on the status bar, can't be reached on a normal way with voiceover...

My conclusion: a paid screenreader for the mac that makes program's accessible
with scripts (like screen readers on windows do), should be very welcome I
think.
With this kind of optional screenreader, blind users should be able to use all
the equivalents on the mac of their windows favorites. Perhaps it should push
apple to make their screenreader better on a faster speed.

Why such screenreader doesn't exist yet?
I see 2 reasons for this:
1. Apple should not be happy with this and the screenreader of apple should
have more possibilities to integrate with the os then the external screenreader.
2. Other communities don't see a reason to make a screenreader for the mac
while there is one built in.
If it should be the second reason, any people with accessibility frustrations
on the mac , should communicate this to other companies like gw micro, freedom
scientific, baum...

Any opinions about this meanings should be very welcome.
kind regards,
William Windels

Re: Tips for reading PDF documents on the Mac

2012-04-09 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Those are very helpful suggestions. I wonder, though: Have you ever tried
reading pdf documents formatted in multiple columns? I can do so using an old
PowerPC iBook running Tiger, but I can't seem to do so with newer Macs and OSs.

Hello,

I just bought an Apple TV, third generation. If any of you own one, too, have
you encountered any accessibility issues of which I should be aware?

Thanks.

RE: Tables [was:] Re: numbers

2012-02-23 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
When I want to change the contents of a particular cell, I position the cursor
on the data-entry field. Then, I arrow over to the cell that I want to edit.
Next, I press the delete (back-space) key to delete the cell's contents.
Finally, I type in the new information that I wish to store in that cell.

No Rafael, that's not what I asked for. I know how to enter data. But I want to
change existing data in the cells.
Imagine you have an address of a friend in a cell. His telephone number changes
and you want to change just the number. How to do this in Tables?
I don't see this important possibility accessible with VoiceOver.
Again: how to change specific data in a cell?
Not entering data in an empty cell. That's easy.
Hopefully my question is clearer now.

Re: numbers

Tables has a data entry field. That is where data are entered into each cell.
If you cannot find the data entry field on your own, you may benefit from
sighted help to find it the first time. Place your cursor in the field, making
sure VO is not locked. You can then type or paste in data and formulae. If
you type in the data entry field, press the return (enter) key to get the data
into the cell. The arrow keys are used to move between cells.

RE: numbers

2012-02-21 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
If you are using an Intel-based Mac, then the first thing to do when you open
the Tables application is to get the cursor out of the table. Press Shift,
Control, Option, up-arrow together, in order to get out of the table where the
cursor is pointing. Press this key combination again to get out of the
spreadsheet. Do these things first, or the following instructions won't make
sense.

Basically, there are two ways to read a cell's contents in Tables. The first
way is to place the cursor over the field in which one enters numbers,
formulae, and so on. If you choose this option, make sure VO is not locked, so
that you can use the arrow keys to move from cell to cell (i.e., left arrow to
move to the left, bottom arrow to move down, etc.). This is a simple option
that allows you to navigate from cell to cell, to read each cell's contents,
and to enter data into individual cells, all from the data-entry field.

The second way to move around in Tables is somewhat more complicated. To make
things easier, first lock VO (by pressing control-option-semicolon). Next,
enter the spreadsheet, by pressing shift and the down-arrow key together. At
this level, you will be able to move the VO cursor with the arrow keys and read
the letters designating the columns (i.e., Column A, Column B, etc.), as well
as the row numbers (i.e., Row 1, Row 2, etc.). To access the individual cells,
navigate to the table (VO says "table when you've found it). With VO still
locked, press the shift and down-arrow keys together again. That will put you
in the table of cells, from which point onward you can just use the arrow keys
to navigate from cell to cell.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll do my
best to try to answer them.

Cordially,
Rafael

I have started selecting the file I want from the folder by interacting with
the table and putting the cursor on the file and then uninteracting. I then go
VO+m and into open with. This brings up a list of programs, I think the first
one is preview and that's selected, you want to select something like Safari or
Chrome if you have it, press enter and it'll open fine. Much easier to read.
You have to do it every time though, as I haven't worked out how to set it to
open PDFs that way as default.

RE: reading PDFs

2012-02-21 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Locking VO is the only way I've found to read pdfs, too. It's also possible to
move left and right on a line, one word at a time, using the left and right
arrows, provided that VO is locked. There does not seem to be a way to read
documents formatted in multiple columns, however, nor is it possible to
navigate by sentence or paragraph, at least as far as I know. If anyone else
on this list knows more tricks, please do share.

Hi all,

THe only way I can read PDFs is to press control option and colon which locks
the VO keys. This way you can just use down arrow to read the document or just
press A for all. I believe you can also interact with the toolbar and go page
by page. But it's not intuitive. I hope this helps.

Re: numbers

If your spreadsheet needs are not very complicated, you might wish to consider
Tables. It's the spreadsheet app that I use on the Mac, and I really like it.
It has all the usual functions, and you can enter your own formulae, as well.
You can save your work as xl files, too. Creating graphs is somewhat limited,

Strange wireless network problem

2012-02-05 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hello,

I'm hoping someone on this list might have some insight into a problem I'm
having when trying to sign onto my home wireless network. I'm using the
airport software on a laptop (iBook g4) as the base station. I have no
problems signing into the account from my iMac, running OSX. When I try to
sign in from the Windows OS, which is installed natively on the same iMac, the

another dialog pops up, stating that the network may no longer be available.

Any thoughts or suggestions are most welcome.

SPSS for Mac?]

Hi Rafael and Al Puzzoli,

If either of you or the student that Al speaks of has access to an iOS device,
there are currently some free math educational apps for iPhone, iPod Touch, and
iPad that appear to be accessible and capable of doing statistics. There may
be others. but the one that I just tried out because it has currently gone free
(usually $0.99) is called "Statistics Pro" by Larry Feldman:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/statistics-pro/id353217077?mt=8
I've tried the first few modules on Data Analysis and Linear Regression, and
these seem to work accessibly. I'd recommend using a Bluetooth Keyboard and
turning QuickNav on for data entry navigation. There are a few caveats.
First, the data are limited in the number of points that can be handled, with a
maximum of 30 data entries, and also a minimum number of data points for some
functions (or you obviously won't be able to calculate some statistical
measures like variance). The "Data Points" text box will tell you the allowed
range of number of data points. You must enter a number here before you double
tap the "Analyze" button (or activate it by pressing the up and down arrow keys
simultaneously on a Bluetooth keyboard if QuickNav is on). By default, empty
entries will be treated as 0 (and this is announced at the start: "Data (blanks
are 0)"). VoiceOver will announce the heading for the "Data Points" text box
out of sequence if you flick through, because the data entries (x1, x2, x3,
etc.) are in one column, and the buttons/text boxes for "Clear Data", "Data
Points", and "Analyze" are in a second column in the top half of the screen.
(You can verify this if you run your finger vertically down from the "Data
(blanks are 0)" label near the top of the screen about a quarter to a third of
the way across from the left edge; then when you are on the text box for "x1",
move your finger horizontally to the right to the "Clear Data" button, and
switch to moving vertically down. You'll hear "Clear Data" button, "Data
Points", "[4,30] text field, double tap to edit", then "Analyze" button.) So
when you do a "read all" two finger flick up, VoiceOver will alternate between
reading the two columns, and you'll hear the "Data (blanks are 0)" message,
then "x1 text field", "Clear Data" button, "x2 text field", "Data Points", "x3
text field", "[4,30] text field", "x4 text field", "capital S button", "x5 text
field", "button", "capital R button", and "Analyze button".

I would just navigate with the keyboard to each field in sequence, and realize
that in the previous instance I will be entering the first 3 data points (x1,
x2, and x3) before coming to the text box for the total number of data points,
then continue entering data values until I want to move to the "Analyze" button
(last element in the screen, so do a four finger tap on the bottom of the
screen to move there, or use Control+Down arrow on the keyboard). You'll get
announcements of the mean, standard deviation, median, maximum and outliers.
The "capital S" button saves your entries, and "capital R" restores them. The
unlabeled "button" is an info button that tells you this.

There are a few other concerns. VoiceOver reads out the text summary of the
analysis quite well, but it won't read Greek letters (e.g., "mu" for the mean),
or certain symbols for square root, etc. On the Mac I handle this be sending
the output to TextEdit. I'm not sure how to work around things here. It may
be possible to do an image capture and OCR with another app. However, if you
know what is going on, you can still follow the formulae results based on the
written text summaries. I've only done some quick testing, but this may be
usable. Each menu item listed in the app, such as "Data Analysis", "Linear
Regression", "Normal Distribution", etc. has two sub menus: Solver (where you
input values) and Tutorial (where there are general explanations of the
concepts behind the calculation). Try taking a look at this, and possibly
other iOS apps for statistics. As I noted, this one is currently free, so you
can exp

I had the same question. Pdf to rtf service was the best I found. This app lets
you open PDF documents in text edit. You install it by copying the .service
file into a folder on your hard drive. The folder is specified in the readme.
Your document is still a PDF, so you'll have to copy and paste to a new
document and then save the new document in the format which you prefer. Here's
a download link for this app.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17950/pdf2rtfservice

Another option is to open preview, hit command-a, command-c, and paste your
text into text edit. This will work for most PDF's.

I have not tried it myself as I haven't got a multi-column document to test it,
and it is just a thought - but try highlighting the content of your document by
pressing command+a and copying it to clipboard and then pasting into TextEdit.

Good luck.

PDF files

2011-06-27 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hello all,

I am trying to use Preview to read a multiple-column, pdf file. The problem is
that I don't want to read by column. I want to read line-by-line, from the
left to the right of the document, but I can't seem to figure out how to do
that. In other words, I would like for VO to ignore the column formatting, and
to treat the document as though it contained only one column.

If anyone on this list could give me some insight as to how to do this, I would
be most grateful.

They both need good lighting, so I use Light Detector to gauge the level of
light.

With both apps, you place the iPhone with its camera in the centre of the
document, then raise it. With SayText, the autofocus mechanism tells you when
to keep still and wait for it to take the picture.

With Prizmo, the phone vibrates, then you say "Take Picture" and it does just
that. With Prizmo, you need to have a headset connected as it switches to the
phone speaker rather than the normal speaker as soon as the picture has been
taken.

Both apps require a bit of practice before you can get decent results.

Cheers,

While this does not address the original post directly it does remind me of
the hypercard program free on the original mac. It was a wonderful program
which could easily do flash cards right out of the box and even formal
application development of all kinds using the underlying programing
language. It was in my mind one of the most powerful for users at all
levels apps apple provided and a sad loss.

It is not now available for os 10 but a segment of the below discusses
clones including a free one which does work on os10. Here is a wiki
discussion of it:

Re: VoiceOver When Used with Preview Questions

Have you tried interacting with the text? You should be able to read by line,
using the up- and down-arrow keys. You also should be able to read by word,
using the lef- and right-arrow keys.

RE: Outspoken VS. VoiceOver

2011-03-22 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
As I see it, the fact that VO only works with applications created in Objective
C/Cocoa is a serious limitation of this screen reader. That's not to say that I
don't appreciate Apples commitment to providing a free screen reader, but I do
miss the simplicity of Outspoken, as well as its greater compatibility with
other software.

Hi,
I'm an old outspoken user, and i can say that for its time it was the best
screen reader i'd used on any platform, but then we'll have to remember that in
Sweden we only used one screen reader for Dos, and it could be quite cumbersome
to set up and so on. True enough we didn't have the control we have now, but
there were a lot of innovative techniques used that i miss to this day. As
there was no braille in the beginning, Outspoken used a pretty clever
implementation of sound to show you where the cursor was. I could go on and on
and on about this screen reader but just let me mention one thing more: You
didn't need to worry if the app was accessible or not, the only apps that
didn't work on the macs back then were the ones that were made in Hypercard. I
wonder if the apps were simpler back then?

RE: Outspoken VS. VoiceOver

2011-03-21 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
I used to use Outspoken with Mac OS9. It was more intuitive than VO, in my
opinion, but it also didn't give you as much accessibility as VO does (e.g.,
you couldn't navigate by paragraph vs. sentence with Outspoken).

That said, I wish Outspoken were still available. There are many APPs that are
inaccessible with VO, which might be accessible with Outspoken, if a version
existed for OS 10.

Thanks a lot.

Re: blackboard and Safari

2011-03-02 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
If you install Windows on your Mac, using Bootcamp, then you can use System
Access to Go (SA to Go) for your screen reader. SA to go is free and quite easy
to learn. This is how I solved my problem.

Good luck to you.

Re: blackboard and Safari

2011-03-01 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
The problem is that Angel does not support Safari. In other words, it's not a
VoiceOver issue. If Explorer or FireFox were accessible with VO, you would be
able to use them, since Angel supports these browsers.

In the short-term, I'm afraid your only options are to use Windows or, maybe,
Ubuntu Linux. In the longer-term, it may be worth our while to write to Angel,
asking them to begin supporting Safari. Something to consider, anyway.

Hello all,

I would like to start using Numbers as my spreadsheet app. Can anyone on this
list point me to a quick start tutorial on the VO commands for Numbers?

Thanks very much.

Subject: I am now on dropbox but need help with the app

Hi all.

A friend who is a window-eyes user has invited me and I am now on drop box.
However, her description of what she has and what I have on my air are two
completely different things. If it is not too much trouble, could someone give
me a brief or not so brief explanation of how the heck I use this? My friend
has things like a my drop box folder and other folders which I do not have.
She says that all she does is paste files into her drop box public folder,
which I do not seem to have, and she can then send links to those files to
whomever she wishes. I don't know enough or understand enough to ask other
questions, :)

Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys can give.

Re: the mac and productivity

2010-11-30 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
First, Microsoft Office is not accessible on the Mac, as far as I can tell.
However, you can partition your harddrive using BootCamp, so that you can
install Windows on one of the partitions, if you absolutely must use Windows
software.

Second, pdf files are very readable on the Mac, using Preview.

Third, an office suite for the Mac, called iWorks, is quite accessible, as are
certain other word-processing and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Bean and
Tables, respectively).

I hope this answers your questions.

Hi
Is ubuntu/vinux trying to copy mac I wonder? Most programs for vinux except for
qt4 and some webkit programs are currently inaccessible with vinux 3.0 but
other than that most things just work. Does mac use something similar to At-Spy
atspi to make its OS accessible I wonder? Reason I'm asking is because when
both mac and vinux3.0 load websites they both say html content. They also say
some other things that makes me think vinux has incorporated at least some form
of apple's universal accessibility into vinux 3.0 itself.
