Um, Mac, just a bit political for this group don't you think? However, agree
with you. Happy fourth to all, and be kind to your fellow man and woman and

Re: Dead or Frozen iPhone 8 Plus

2018-03-01 Thread regina alvarado

Tim, just have to tell you that I always learn from your answers. Something I
didn't consider that it might be volume. Thanks for a tool to use next time I
find myself feeling I have a frozen phone. Would rather try fixing that before
hard re-booting.

Hi,

I don't believe that this is common. I don't have the 8 Plus, only the 8, but

usually just wait a few seconds, then press the Unlock button again, try
turning VO off then on and/or hit the up volume a few times until it works.
Have not had to do the reset thing ever though. If you try the triple press of
the Home button and you do not feel the haptic feedback, then it will probably
need to be powered up, otherwise, there's likely something going on with the
volume causing you to not be able to tell if it's on or off.

E. T., this is not something I have had happen on charge overnight. A couple

mac versus iPad pro

2018-01-09 Thread regina alvarado
I want to thank all of you that helped me with deciding about a new Mac. Right
now I have a 32 gig IPad. Could I get as much out of that as I could from an
iPad Air? I have a couple of keyboards, and I also got my Apex BT to hook again
to my phone. I have an 8 Plus. I think the iPad is a 32 gig so I think it may
be too small. So, I guess I am asking if I sell my Mini and use a keyboard,
which iPad would be better? Also, I love my 8 Plus because of the two speakers.
With my hearing deficit I have found it to be the best sound. Would the iPad
Pro have a better speaker or perhaps two speakers? Again, deeply appreciate all
your help!

help on a new Mac

2018-01-08 Thread regina alvarado
A question that I know is individual, but I need to get some ideas.

I am thinking of replacing my Mac Mini. I am not a power user. I do mail" and
go on the internet and maybe listen to music and definitely books. What Mac
would meet my needs. I like my Mini, but I got it in 2015 and it cannot be
expanded and only has 4 gigs of ram. Thus I cannot go past El Capitan. What do
you think. All thoughts are welcome. Still have not decided to change, but
maybe I will. Might
want a laptop.

I am willing to do a clean install of Sierra, but remember I am a Mac baby. If
you are willing can you send me a step-by-step, off list so I don't do anything
that will kill my Mini, please? I have nobody who knows Apple if no voice over.
I know I'm asking a lot, sorry.

Hello there
You say your Mac Mini is still on El Capitan. Personally back when I had El

Maybe you should try going up to Sierra, I liked Sierra right from day one, and
still find it a very stable build, i'm running it both on my MacBook Pro but
also on my iMac which is older than your mini.

It might also be worth doing a total clean install of Sierra while you're at
it, in other words formatting your hard drive and not simply upgrading over the
current system. This will take longer and is slightly more effort, but in the
end you Will have a clean machine and it will feel like a brand-new Mac. You
might want to do this in the next week or two before High Sierra comes out, or
at least download Sierra while it's still easy to get.

I'll be running Sierra on my MacBook Pro which is my work machine for at least
The next few months until I'm sure High Sierra isSuper stable,

Hi: My Mini is a 2015. It has an old style disk drive. Hope this helps you to
help me. I may in the future look to adding Lenox as this would help my brother
with working with my Mac. He uses Lenox and is my go to person if Mini is not
working correctly, although I am learning more every day. However, putting
another operating system on my Mac is far above my pay grade right now. Yes, he

I am wondering if this is a habit of my Mini or if there is a setting I can
change. When I was in the internet and moving up and down with vo-arrows,
oftentimes I would hear internet busy. I have heard this in mail also. Once I
wait a bit the internet is back on. Is there anything I can do to alleviate
this? Also, is there a command to go straight to text in safari once you are on
the article's page? Thanks. Newby but learning and determined to understand
apple operating system. Oh, I know high sierra is coming. I currently have el
Capitan. I was told by a person in Accessibility that I don't want to upgrade
any further as my Mini is like a first computer for someone like a grandmother
or a user who only wanted internet and mail and perhaps music or such basic
things. I am happy with this, though I have no grandchildren. What does
everyone think about this. Should I upgrade to any of the higher like sierra? I
was told there would be less lag if I stayed on El Capitan.

Oops how to save as on a mac and how to transfer from downloaded file to memory stick

2017-08-30 Thread Regina Alvarado
Well, neither thing worked. I sent my UEB as a keyword document. Is there a way
to make it a BRF on either braille note or on the Mac?

Downloaded a book from internet. Copied from the download folder and pasted
into the books folder after opening the memory stick. No dice. When I go to
read on the braille note the book is not there. Am I making this too

Well, I don’t know what happened to my message, but thank you so much
Catherine. Deeply appreciated. I was dumb. Apparently when I open the stick
there are a lot of things on the stick not visible on my braille note. All I
had to do is grow down further through the files after opening the stick and I
found both folders named as I had them. When I opened the folder I arrowed down
through a lot of things also until I found all my files. Now I can continue to
learn how to download books from bookshare. Thanks again.

Hi Catherine, On my braillenote apex the folders on the stick show up as books
and lessons. On the Mac I assume they are the same folders, but they are long
numbers instead of books and lessons. Sorry I didn't make it clear.

transferring and downloading and attaching with a memory stick on Mac

2017-08-29 Thread regina alvarado
Now that I am in the right place, I have a question about reading and
transferring from and transferring to a memory stick.

A little background. I have a braillenote apex on which I transferred two
folders to a memory stick called books and Lessons. I want to get into the
lessons folder to be able to attach a file to an email. I also want to download
into the books folder from Bookshare and read them on my braillenote.

Now that you know what I am trying to do, I first want to let everybody know I
am definitely still a Mac beginner. I have a book I used to get as far as I did
with this. I put my stick in the computer, ′mac mini′, at the volume I pushed
command-shift-C. That brought up my list of drives. It was there so I used
vo-space to open the drive. That was when I got a nasty surprise. Instead of
names like books and Lessons there were just numbers and no way to see what
they were. I understand these are just images so if I have to copy them where
do I paste them?

So questions are: how do I transfer files and folders to and from my stick and
how do I get the folders titled. Also, I realize, at least I think, I cannot
download directly onto my stick. If I am correct, how do I transfer from the
download folder to the stick and will the braillenote read the files if in BRF?
Please do these questions step-by-step as I thought I understood what I read
but obviously there steps gave me a big surprise. Deeply appreciate any help on
all of this. I imagine most people on here are advanced Mac users so feel free
to send answers to: reggie.alvar...@gmail.com

Mary, have you turn your phone off lately? I believe there is a time period,
about 4 hours, where you can use your fingerprint after signing in with your
Apple ID. If you have shut down your phone, you have to always sign in. Clear

Re: size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

What is optical image stabilization? Sounds like nothing I would need, and I
like the smaller feel of the 6s. Just curious to know if this is necessary. By
your post, it sounds like it costs more too. Oh, I was able to get a screen
protector with gorilla glass. What a difference to the touch and movement of
the fingers. Is this the first year these protectors have been out? Again,
curious.

I bought it in the Sprint store. It is wonderful. I would say Amazon or other
places have them, though. No more stuck fingers. In fact, I find myself tapping
even lighter on the screen. Do not know why this is so, however. It just
happened. It cost about 40 dollars so it is more expensive, but I will always

Were you able to feel the bubbles? Interesting. I wonder why as it fits over
the glass of the phone. Well, I guess I will find out. LOL. It will not matter

Whether you need optical image stabilization is dependent on whether you use
the camera to take pictures. If you do, it may help. If you don't, and that
includes even if you do OCR, it's not worth it. It will not matter. Go with
what feels better in your hand, because if you get something it's too big, you
will be nothing but frustrated. That is just my opinion of course. Where did
you get the gorilla glass screen protector?

Samsung offers Optical Image Stablization on both its GalaxyS6 & GalaxyS6Edge

I know this is a mac list, but since Jonathan did a podcast on the 6s Plus, I
thought I would send along a tip. There is nothing to say an app does not work
to bring up the contectual menu, but there is a definite difference in the feel
of the vibration. When an app will not work, the vibration is longer by a bit
and there are 2 beats to it. When it works there is only one small beat. When
you immediately swipe to the right the contectual menu is right there. It is
wonderful for calendar and notes and reminders. Hope this helps someone.

a question on notifications in FB Mesenger

Hi all, I know this is a mac list, but I have a question about notifications on
iPhone and Bacebook Mesenger if someone could help. I'll say thanks before my
question.

A friend was installing mesenger. She got all the messages about her phone
number, contacts etc. She was going through these quickly saying no. When she
came to notifications she accidentally said she didn't want them on. However,
she does. How can she turn notifications back on in FB Mesenger. We looked in
settings both in notifications and under Mesenger. Nothing there. Does she have
to go into the FB actual site?

it start automatically with that setting or do I need to tell Netflix somehow
that my devices have description on? Thank you for any help you can give.

I know in the past I've been able to visit an Apple store and get a phone
exchanged for less than the cost of a new device. I had forgotten it was in my
pocket and went swimming with it. At the time I think they charged me about
$150-200 and I told them exactly what happened. That's been a few years ago
when the iPhone 4 was new. It was money I didn't really want to spend but it
was still far less than the cost of outright buying a new one. Maybe they do
the same thing for laptops. There are stories elsewhere on the web of folks
calling AppleCare for water in their laptops and being told it's not covered
but being able to get a spill repair for way less than the cost of a new one.
Still could be a non-trivial cost but better than buying a whole new unit.
Other forums also mention having computer damage riders on their insurance
covering this kind of thing so you might want to check into that. There are
also 3rd party repair shops which might have a lower cost than going through
the official Apple channels such as ispillrepair.com. I've never used them but
it might be worth a try.

Is there a place where I can go see if my mac is covered under apple care
 if it's killed by water?

My poor mac was just drowned in rain thanks to mother nature and soaking
pretty much everything with blowing wind and loads of rain while I was out
 for lunch.

Sadly I can't call apple to ask them due to the fact it's a holiday here in
 Canada, grrr!!

Re: Problems with Voice Dream Reader on an iPhone 6

Go into settings in dream reader. Go to settings right bottom corner. In
settings tap manage my voices, restore my voices and in that screen there will
be a list of your voices with either set preferred or download underneath its

Hello everyone,

I am having a rather unusual problem with Voice Dream Reader on my

When I backed up everything from my iPhone 4S, all of the Voice Dream Reader
stuff appeared on the new iPhone. The only things that didn’t carry over to
the new iPhone were the additional voices I purchased. These voices were
high-quality voices for both English and German. I was able to restore the
German voice, but thus far, I have not been able to restore James, the high
quality English which I purchased. Whenever I try, I am told that the voice
can’t be transferred because of poor connectivity. While I can believe this,
were I only at one physical site for downloading, I have tried at five or six
different places, with 3 out of 3 bars reception and fast connectivity.

Does anyone have any ideas for me? I would very much like to have the voices I
paid for on my new iPHone 6.

Thanks to you all,

Mike

upgrading?

2015-02-03 Thread Regina Alvarado
Hi all,
I do not post much, but I think I am ready to move from Maverick to Yosemity.
Is it stable enough now? Can I get either pointed to a detailed step-by-step
how-to on the internet or can someone give me one? I think I can upgrade to the
latest iTunes.

I thought I could not upgrade because I needed 4 gigs, but my brother told me
that is RAM not what is on my hard drive. If I do the upgrade and do not have
enough space will it tell me so I can go right back to Mavericks? I have a Mac
Mini.

anyone know of a printer for under $50 that they have that needs little to no

already have a scanner I do not think I need something with all the bells and

Could I ask both of you whether you have gone to the Apple Menu and selected
check for software updates to see if you are both running the latest version of

If you are running the latest version of Mavericks and this has still not
sorted the problem then for whatever reason the patch Apple issued has not
taken affect on your systems.
If this is the case then the easiest way to resolve this may be a re-install or
a clean install.
The good news is that on the Mac this is a much easier and simpler exercise to

wifi not sure if on or off on Mini but cannot use internet, mail

2014-06-03 Thread Regina Alvarado
Hello all,
I have a perplexing problem. My Mac Mini dropped off the wifi a few days ago.
My brother was able to do something and said the Mini wifi was not on. He got
wifi turned on, at least it was on until I turned off the Mini just a few mins
ago. I could get the internet but when I turned it off and back on, wifi was
gone again. I went to system prefs and network. There is a button that says
turn wifi off. That makes me think I am connected to wifi, but mail, internet,
etc is not viable. Help! I have a course on line I am trying to get to
which I have not been able to get to at all because of no wifi and I want to
access it on the Mac. I have cable wifi, a network set up and rebooted by the
cable company a week ago with a new password and every other device including
my roommate's window's machine is on wifi. I moved the Mini from about 30 feet
away from the router to now around a wall about 5 feet from the router. Do you
think I need a stronger router? Thank everyone so much for any thoughts or ways
of getting my wifi back. I am anxious to start my course.

Hi Reggie,

What probably happened to cause your Mail to not actually quit has to do with
iMap functions being still in progress when you asked Mail to Quit. That is,
if you, let's say, deleted a message then real soon after, quit Mail. The
deleting of the message happens quickly locally but because of Gmails pseudo
application of the iMap protocol, the moving/re-labelling of the message to the
Archive or Trash takes about 5 or more seconds depending on your network speed.
So, consequently, quitting while Mail and Google are talking back and forth
occasionally causes Mail to hang in an odd sort of way. The best thing to do
is exactly what Alex mentioned, force Mail to quit and when you do go back into
Mail, the last message you deleted or attempted to move will be in its original
location and all is good.

Re: IPhone 5 running 7.1 Messages broken?

2014-05-08 Thread Regina Alvarado
Mark: First congrats on your marriage. Hope Amy is doing well now. This is a
thing I run into about twice weekly. Just turn the phone off and back on. This
has always cleared any problem with texting for me. You might try a reset
holding the off and on and home buttons for 10 seconds if the first does not
work. However, just turning off and on has done the clearing for me
consistently. Hope this helps!

Re: Sample text that VoiceOver is skipping

2014-05-05 Thread Regina Alvarado
On the mini, especially in the web, I will try to move through links and
intermittently VO will go crazy and skip around as if sliding down the page. I
tried to turn off VO and restart it hoping it would work. However, I am unable
to turn it off. I thought the command was VO F2 F2, but this doesn't work. How
do I stop and restart VO? I know you can turn it off with I think VO f10, but
does that only mute like the three-finger double tap?

I would also like to know how to find windows open as my machine is telling me
there are windows open but can't find them. They are not the ones on the dock.
Any help you can give deeply appreciated. The skipping is annoying.

 Hi,

I have also seen this for years.

this is not quite a bug in the sense that it is the structure for a speech
command which you can see in action by doing the following.

I will not put these commands in this text as I'd rather not make people's
 speech go wonky! lol! :)

1 open a text file with TextEdit

2 add the command rate90 at the top of the file, surrounded by three brackets
 as in: [[[ command ]]]

3 Type some text below the command you just placed in the top of the file as
in: This is just a test

Now when you do a say all with VO a the test text should be spoken quite
 slowly.

The number you type for the rate is the rate of speech in words per minute.

So when VO encounters the triple brackets in text it expects a speech
command, but does not speak what is in those brackets.

Hope this helps explain this a bit.

 Have a great day All!

 Cara :)

I've noticed something really odd lately, and I'd like to see if anyone

Objective-C or anything; the oddity is that VO is skipping text.
Specifically, the bit that says [[self solitaireModel] isDiscardStackRole]
is omitted entirely. I recommend you set punctuation to most before
 continuing. Here's the line:

 [self setDiscardStack:[[AITCardStack alloc] initWithRoles:@[[[self
 solitaireModel] isDiscardStackRole;

I assume you read that line by line, or all at once in a say-all. Go back
and examine it word by word, or character by character, and see if there
isn't a part near the end that VO skipped over entirely. I can reproduce
this with any voice, and I'm starting to wonder if the brackets are
getting VO confused. On the Mac, in-line speech commands are surrounded by
double brackets, and I think the speech manager that lets VO talk might be
 getting mixed up.

how to change back to Mini going to sleep

If I have the time set to 30 minutes and check both power nap and put to sleep

If so, how do I stop this. I want Mini to save battery life by going to sleep

You need to go to System preferences which you can do with VO M when in Finder

Then interact with the table and type EN for energy savings and again press VO.
Then you can VO right to explore your settings in Energy preferences.

Hope that helps.

Re: Listening to APH Interview on the Mac

2014-04-05 Thread Regina Alvarado
HELLO Keith and all. Need some newby help. Sounds as if I should have gone to
Google Chrome. How can I get rid of Adobe Flash and get Chrome? Does it disable
Safari or does it just work automatically? I said I was new at this, especially
with Mini. I use flash for streaming HLN, MSNBC, etc. Will Chrome work? Thanks.

Hello Keith and others,

I took your suggestion, Keith, and just used Google Chrome, and it worked like
a charm. Thank you very much. I think that this will be my approach in the
future. I am still using Mountain Lion but will be upgrading, now that most of
the gotchas have been addressed. I hope that Google Chrome will work just as
well when I upgrade.

Thanks again for the help.

Two Mini questions

2014-04-04 Thread regina alvarado
Hello all:
Three questions. I know I put 2, but just throughout of a third. Sorry.

1. I somehow re-named my volume on the desktop. It is fine, but is there a way
to have it go back to the previous name? What did I do to re-name it? It just
turned up on the desktop with the name of my guide dog! How I accomplished it
is a mystery to me.
2. Today I tried to download Adobe Flash 12. I have it downloaded but wish to
uninstall 11. How do I do this? I could re-download 11, but I only want 12,
current version.
3. When I downloaded Adobe Flash, it ended up out of downloads and on the
desktop. What did I do incorrectly? I do not know if this is the 12 on the
desktop or the older version. How can I tell to delete as above?

Thank you for any help you can give on these things. Please be specific and
step-by-step. I am learning the Mini, but by no means an expert! Thanks a bunch.

garage band, update or not and do I really have it

2014-03-21 Thread Regina Alvarado
I have an interesting problem or not. APPLE menu and updates on Mini says I
have update to garage band. I have tried to download twice and keep getting
message: garage band failed to download. Go to purchased page. Mini acts like
it has garage band and there is an update. Where do I find it if I have it, and
how do I clear off the download if I do not have it. I did not buy it either.
Thanks for the help.

1. Go in to message app.

3. Now, double tap to choose a contact to add.

4. Now, choose a contact where there is both a home and mobile number and the
home number is listed first.

5. Now, double tap on the mobile number.

6. Now, examine the to field. You will notice that the home number is
selected.

This is the case whether you do this inside message or the contacts app.
See what the problem is?

David, I use mbraille so not a problem for me, but I tried putting in the cell
number from contacts and it went back to the screen to start typing my text.
When I flicked to the left I found her home number instead of the cell number I

Is it supposed to be under the first phone number like an email or can you tell

Mini mail again

OK everyone, I am truly not understanding. Please give me step-by-step
instructions on the easiest way to read and delete mail. I have conversations

email question and a question about reading and manipulation of docs n a memory chip

2014-03-04 Thread Regina Alvarado
I have some questions about mail on Mini and reading from documents on a
storage chip put in a chip reader.

1. Is there a way to have Ap'ple mail put all of this group's mail together as
one can in Windows? I would like all mail from each group together. If
possible, or even if not, is there a way to mark mail conversations for
deletion and then delete them all at once? In other words, I want to delete
chunks of email altogether.
2. What are the steps to read from a chip? Where do I find the drive or
volume, and how do I open up the documents on that volume. How would I copy
for instance an email address to the clipboard and then paste it into a new
email? Oh, I bet I can't open anything on this as it was done all in windows,
right? Well maybe a dumb question, but I'll leave it just in case my thought I
had just now is incorrect. If there is no way to read or manipulate these
documents, sorry for my question, but I still need the answer to the first
question. (smiley) Thanks for any help.

Re: Mail setting

2014-02-17 Thread Regina Alvarado

This whole mail question is confusing to me. If I tab past the first screen
when I open mail I see mailboxes, some of which are checked and some not. Why
is this? What is the check for? Also, if I once get a conversation open, do I
have to arrow to each post and then do a VO J to read and then do VO J again so
I can find the next post and delete the one I just read? Is there a smoother
way to read mail? Are there any settings that would make mail less cumbersome?

Hi,

As John mentioned, it's likely that your Preview Pane is active. When the
Preview Pane is active, the status is usually misread as Mail considers
something read once the Preview Pane of a message has been opened. Simply
arrowing over the message causes the Preview Pane to activate so, from a VO
prospective, you land on the message to determine if you wish to read it or
not, and it is subsequently considered Read. To deal with the Preview Pane,
I'll paste in some instructions that I figured out back when Mavericks first
came out:

 1. Go into Mail Prefs and select the Viewing pane.
 2. Check to change to Classic View.
 3. Close Mail Prefs.
 4. Navigate to the Horizontal Splitter after the Messages Table.
 5. Press VO-cmd-f5 to make sure the mouse is focused on the Splitter.
 6. Press down on the Trackpad then drag downwards to the bottom of the
 physical Trackpad.

You will know that it worked because the splitter will no longer be right
after the Messages Table, it will be the last item at the bottom of the
 window.

 7. Change back into Modern View in the Mail Prefs by unchecking the box.
 8. Close the Mail Prefs.

You will know that the Preview Pane is closed/hidden/disabled by navigating
around the Mail window and you will note a Vertical Splitter before and
 after the Messages Column Group.

If it's not sticking for you, try quitting Mail after getting rid of the
Preview Pane in Classic view. Once you re-open Mail, you can change back to
the Modern View and the change should stick. At least it has for me
 numerous times.

 Later...

Re: messages reappearing in mail after being deleted

Yes, drove me mad for a while. Go to VO m for menu. Interact with it with
VO-ENTER down arrow. Now look for viewing and Vo space to ask for it. Tab over
to a check box that reads something like download similar email and vo space to
uncheck. That will do it. Apple apparently changed the default, not a happy
thing for us. Nothing to do with Gmail or mail. Hope this helps.reggie and

old mail showing up continually

2014-02-04 Thread Regina Alvarado
Continually receiving the same mail over and over again was explained to me a
couple of days ago
and it works beautifully.

It is an Apple default. Vo m and interact. Go to preferences and VO space. Go
to view and vo space to open it. now tab through until you hear include
related messages and it will be checked. VO space to uncheck. You will not
have the problem after you uncheck this option.

Overwhelmed with mail

2014-01-27 Thread regina alvarado
OK, thought I understood mail. When I ;enter the messages and all load I open
the conversation with right arrow. Then I down arrow and find the first in the
conversation. Then I hit VO-J to read text of email. I VO-J to go back to the
list and delete the email I just read. Then I start the process again. If after
reading a number of emails and hitting CMD-Q and then going back into messages,
all the email I just deleted comes back. I am completely inundated. Am I doing
email correctly? How do I keep email from coming back? Are there any settings I
should absolutely make to make it easier to do mail? I have gmail in IMAP. It
reads fine. Do I have to do something in Gmail because it is a new machine?
Just a little frustrated in FL as I thought I knew what I was doing but

step by step, please and a recommendation on whether need to buy monitor

2014-01-16 Thread Regina Alvarado
Here I am again asking same question as last night, but I need a step-by-step
of how to fix so I can lower speech and TV separately. would I be better to get
a monitor so there was no sound coming through it? If that is not important
which would cost me a lot for something I will never use, where do I attach
speakers so they will work independently. We ar struggling to find anything but
a speaker that is bluetooth, and no matter what I do to pair, it will not with
speaker and in the meantime my bluetooth keyboard is unpaired. I don't think
Mini can take more than one bluetooth device? Anyway, cannot do anything
learning on my Mini because only control I have is volume on TV remote. Any
help is more than deeply appreciated.

hearing and speakers, headphones, TV, monitor, what? Help, please!

2014-01-15 Thread regina alvarado
I need some serious help! Currently I am hooked to my TV but could use a
monitor. Right now I am being driven mad. my TV sound was blaring. When I used
the TV remote to turn down the TV, it made VO so I absolutely could not hear
it. How do I set up to make the 2 entities, Mini and TV work separately? Would
it be better for me to have a headset and a monitor? Would it be better to have
a monitor and a speaker set? Right now, the only control I have for volume is
the remote so I cannot check Netflix. It is either Netflix or the Mini, not
both! Thanks for any help. If I don’t use quick nav do I just navigate in
Safari with tab and VO-arrows? Ug, headache! Yay! I just tried the
command-shift down arrow and took out the rest of my email. Learned something
today! Thanks to all.

thanks to everyone here, been through all the mail preferences in the menu.
Unless I am not recognizing the words, however, there is no place to get mail
to stop sending my mail back to me. Is there anywhere else to look?

Menu in mail?

2014-01-14 Thread regina alvarado
Good morning! I went into the mail menu last night. I tried to enter on some of
the items to see what was available to me to use in the mail client,
preferences or mail layout, etc. I interacted with for instance general and
then hit VO space to open it up. Nothing would come up on the menu. Am I in the
wrong place to find preferences, setup, probably making this clear as mud
without the right words, LOL. Thanks!

window, VO-left of the Toolbar will be the title of the specific Preference

if you’ve pressed on the Viewing tab from within the Mail Preferences Toolbar,
then Stop Interacting with the Toolbar, one VO-left arrow will announce

Voices, setting them?

Re: Today's 30 minutes with VoiceOver

2014-01-12 Thread Regina Alvarado
April, best command I have learned myself at this point is command Q to close
everything and command W to close windows. A few days ago I believe Sarai sent
an article from Mac World. If it did anything for me, it made the layout of the
screen much more understandable. I even learned what Time Machine was, though
still don't know how to use. I could resend if you like. I think perhaps you
are trying to do too much all at once. Maybe you should focus on mail and get
used to getting into it and reading and writing email until you are
comfortable. You may even want to tackle only starting the machine and getting
on the desktop which has another name I forgot. Don't try to learn all commands
at once. Pick something and become really reliable with it. What I am learning
is that a lot of times the commands will be the same in different places and
apps. By the way, I wear hearing aids and have had to tweak my voices to find
something I can understand. I also don't have a very good memory so little
chunks of info is all I can handle until cemented into long term memory. I
thought the Mac was very different from iPhone, but I am finding there is a lot
of similarity too. I know you can do this. I just will not let it defeat me.
Took me a long time to learn Windows so it will take a while to change
operating systems. However, we can do this!

 1. Open Safari.

 2. Now, press VO+m to open the menu structure.

course this took several times to actually work, not sure how a simple one
press of command F5 used to turn VO on and off now almost every time I want to
toggle VO off and on it takes at least five presses of these commands to work.
Additionally, VO reverted to Alex when I had Samantha set as my voice of
default. I have restarted my machine and am still having VO not properly read
me an email. If I want to go back and read this email before sending it to the
list VO will skip a bunch of words, how does that happen from one day to the
next when I went to bed last night everything was fine. Very frustrating. Just
went back and tried to read what I typed and had at least 10 pauses and VO skip
at least 20 words in the email. This is not a product I would suggest to any
blind user, as obviously there must be a serious stability issue with VO in
Mavericks. Would love any suggestions or help, but not sure how in one day
everything can go from being fine to a piece of crap. I have spent the first
two hours of my morning trying to fix this when I need to be working.

want to do is read and answer email, surf and be able to enter in Safari, and
find out where to transfer files to so I can read them in Pages and work with
them. Don't feel bad. Right now I can't even get my Mac running again. If it
wasn't a Christmas gift, want to throw it out the door! Only thing is, patience
and playing got me where I am with iPhone, and really don't want Mini to defeat
me so nothing for it but to keep trying!

Since dictation won't do what I need it to do in Pages, I'll try to find
something that will. Just not right now. I've still got to many little odd
things I don't know how to do on my new computer, and it exhausts me trying to
figure them out.

As for VoiceOver, I tried to run training program three times over the last few
weeks, and couldn't get it to do what it was supposed to do within the program.
I printed off a many page document from AppleVis a few days ago, and tried
that yesterday. Extremely frustrating. I was able to get it to work in Pages
about as well as the regular reading program. As for on the Internet, not at
all. It read the tabs and nothing on the pages. I'm setting it aside for now.

Everyone usually comes to me for computer tech advice, reformatting, and
more. When I read the comments and questions on this, and other blind computer
sites, I feel like I'm reading a combination of Greek and Chinese. I'm totally
lost.

I'd rather spend the next couple of weeks doing what I can do. Rather than
spending them trying to figure out how to do something, that a person could
show me how to do correctly in five minutes. Somehow there is a missing key
and I have to figure out what it is. Or better yet, have someone show me.

In a couple of weeks, I have my tech evaluation for the state. Or maybe
they're just going to set the date, I'm not sure. It takes forever to get
through the state program. I've been working on it for six months.

I'm also slowly learning braille. I figure I will have to use a braille
display at some point. Talking for the dictation program exhausts me, and makes
my jaw hurt. Due to hearing loss, I have trouble comprehending spoken words, so
VoiceOver may not work for me either.

I will keep checking back to learn new computer skills. At this point,
I'm not sure I have anything to offer anyone else. I don't even recognize a
tenth of the programs mentioned.

Thanks for all your help.

Have you tried to hit cmd and F5? Sometimes Voiceover crashes or just don’t

 help you on the reliability.

If you get a headphone and if needed a splitter, you can just plug the
headphone or earbud in and hear what is being said on the Mac. That can
elimate the problems if tv hav a problem. And maybe it would be good to have
a usb keyboard for those rare cases that blooth don’t work.

Have you tried to hit cmd and F5? Sometimes Voiceover crashes or just don’t
work. Just press cmd F5 once. Wait a min and redo the command and wait a few
 min.

could have dropped, TV may not have come on for some reason or maybe I am in
the wrong place to put the password, understood, but any thoughts on how I
can try and get it running?

Mini sadly not running

2014-01-08 Thread Regina Alvarado
Is there a reliable way to know if you are at the space to put in the password
on the Mini? Many things could be wrong I know, but my Mini is not giving a
signal when to put password in. I have had to force a shutdown twice after
trying to add my password. Afraid it will crash so have not tried again. Thanks
for any assistance. I have the Mini going through the TV for sound and have a
