I got it turned off permanently, but it takes some intuitive action with whatever mouse manipulation is your preferred one. Hi, No, this is not the case. The issue is that, at least so far, if Preview Pane is active, you’ll need to turn it off while in Classic View and it will be applied to both views. Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail
While you can switch back to modern view, your settings won’t stick. If you close your message view window after making the change to eliminate the preview pane, or if you exit mail and go back in, the preview pane is back. At last, that’s what happened to me after I made the change. Only way to make the preview pane stay gone is to stay in class view. A shame, because I’ve kinda gotten to like modern view. -- Buddy Brannan, KB5ELV - Erie, PA Phone: (814) 860-3194 or 888-75-BUDDY On Oct 27, 2013, at 11:11 AM, Teresa Cochran wrote: > I find it easiest to do this in full-screen mode, command-control F for Mail. > Turn mouse keys on. Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail
I find it easiest to do this in full-screen mode, command-control F for Mail. Turn mouse keys on. Switch to classic view in Mail preferences. You can use vO to place the mouse. Just navigate to the message table, but don’t interact with it. VO-right once and you should reach the horizontal splitter. Press control-VO-f5 to place the mouse there. Press the zero/insert key on the numpad once to lock the mouse down, then press and hold the six/right-arrow key on the numpad till you hear VO’s focus changing. this can take several seconds. Then press the period/delete key on the numpad to release the mouse. Double-check to be sure the horizontal splitter and preview pane are gone. At this point, you can switch back to modern view in Mail preferences if you wish. HtH, Teresa Slow down; you'll get there faster. Hi, Nic, Done that. It’s full now! :) I often grab something out of the trash when I think of something to add to a thread. Mostly, I was referring to moving between the message list and mailboxes. Since i now only have the two panes set up, and I can just press return when I want to read a message in greater detail, this minimizes the keystrokes and navigation within the window. Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail
Hi, Mary, This is in modern view. Classic view doesn’t have the preview text for messages. When I was playing with classic view, VO would say “conversation collapsed” or “expanded” but not the number of messages in the conversation. While this was helpful, I found that I missed the text preview within a couple of minutes of reading email this way. teresa On the other hand, there are different fingers. Hi Teresa, With five lines in preview and the preview pane disabled, is that in classic view or standard view? I just upgraded to Mountain lion, and stuck with classic view, but I also have conversations enabled. I never hear it say how many messages are in a thread or even that there is a thread. I suppose that's because I'm still in classic view. I have to go over to where the triangle is that can be expanded and then I see the rest of the messages. But I've always used VO J in classic view. Yeah, Ricardo, I think I’m leaning in that direction. I’m trying with the preview pane off, so I can tab between mailbox lists and message tables more efficiently. I’d forgotten that there’s an accessibility option, control-f-7, that changes how the tab key works. One mode tabs between toolbar items in addition to everything else, and the other mode tabs between items in the main window. Anyway, I have that set now, and things are working quite well. Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail
I know How you feel. lol. I ultimately stuck with the standard view because I’ve grown so accustom to the preview. 75% of the time, I don’t even need to open the message. I just find this ultra efficient. Re: Classic Versus Current view in Mail
Hello Teresa, I’ve always preferred classic view with the preview pane turned off. That way, I can decide not to read a message until later and it stays marked as unread. In Mavericks, Mail is rather more verbose than it was, so after pressing Return to open a message, I press VO-End to skip all the “embedded” garbage and get straight into the text of the message. Attachments show up as embedded items on which I can get a contextual menu and as you point out, I can sort the columns as I wish. Classic Versus Current view in Mail
hi, all, I’m in a quandary now. If I enable classic view in Mail and Mavericks, I get columns that can be sorted, and I get a conversation indicator, albeit without a number, which VO announces first, as i assume it’s at the far left. however, I’ve gotten used to previewing messages, so I’m not sure which is the lesser of two evils. I think i’ll just have to play with it some more and see what I like. teresa "Everything is interesting if you go into it deeply enough."--Richard P.
