Re: IPhone SE 2020 (2nd generation)

2021-09-29 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

It sounds to me that you’re making it more complicated than it actually is.
When you pull out your iPhone to do the double-press of the side button, simply
make sure that it is facing you and the face recognition will happen instantly,
then move the iPhone over beside the reader like you do when using your
finger-print. Really, it’s not complicated at all, just slightly different.
As Dave mentioned, if the “Attention Aware” feature is disabled, which is the
recommendation when VO is on, then you should have no difficulties
authenticating with Face ID.

Yeah, I have to agree with Dave on this one. Though as I wrote in my earlier
post, there are definitely things I dislike about face ID, other than the
situations I mentioned before, I don’t have any trouble getting it to unlock.

2021-09-29 Thread Dave Carlson
Well Shawn, there are many reasons for why one would not update to new iPhone
hardware. But for simply not wanting to make use of Face ID for that seems
different. You may not be aware of the attention aware feature, that does not
require you stare exactly into the phone to unlock. My iPhone unlocks
immediately when it’s pointing anywhere near my face.
Good luck.

My reasons are to do with the touch ID sensor. Would you be happy to

Okay, please let us know how the wallet goes with IOS15 if you don’t mind.

Interesting. I did the process to use a mask, and it was not as easy as just
doing the original Face ID setup. But I got it to work, and it does work now
with a mask. Thanks for the tip.

Hi,

That’s odd. The pass-code, when enabled is only required when you first put
the watch on. There should be no need to enter the pass-code any other time.
So, for example, after my shower in the morning, I put my watch back on, it
asks for the pass-code which I enter. From then on, the entire day long, I do
not need to enter the watch pass-code ever and I use the watch for workouts,
time checking and more throughout the day.

Given the situation we are in, I think Apple should have included Touch ID on

Hi Dave,

Not Shawn, but I’ll give you my take on this.

First, I do like the Home button. I’ve had Face ID since the 10 came out, so
I’m used to the gestures, but I still would prefer a home button.

As for face ID being faster, that’s not my experience. With face ID, I can’t
unlock the phone until it’s in front of my face. With Touch ID, I could unlock
it while I was pulling it out of my purse, so by the time it was situated in my
hand, it was already unlocked.

Finally, there are two situations which I encounter on a daily basis in which
Face ID doesn’t work at all. Face ID is an ordeal when you’re wearing a mask,
requiring you to pull your mask down before unlocking the phone, which harkens
back to your point that Face ID is faster. It’s not faster by the time you
pull out your phone, pull down your mask, and then unlock the phone. And I
think wearing masks is going to be with us for a while, so that’s a great
argument for Touch ID. The other issue I have is when I’m in bright sunlight.
In that situation, the screen washes out, and Face ID doesn’t work at all. I
can’t begin to guess how many times I’ve had to contort my body into some weird
position just to avoid having the lighting wash out my screen.

Cheers,

Donna.

Hi,

It’s probably a real estate issue. The iPads are both thicker and bigger than
an iPhone, thus there are more components crammed into a smaller footprint.
Supposedly by the iPhone 15, in 2023, there will be under glass finger-print
recognition.

I'm still on the fence. I’m leaning toward upgrading, but the lack of Touch ID
would be the thing that would keep me from doing it.

I don’t know, but that’s still not as fast as just having Touch ID.

The other thing I don’t understand about this issue is that all the new iPads
come with Touch ID built into the top button. If they can do that on the
iPads, why not also build it into the phones?

Cheers,

Donna.

Hi,

FaceID recognition is very fast in the newer iPhone models. As long as your
face is around 20 to 80 cm (8 to 36 inches) away from your face, the
recognition speed is amazingly fast and accurate. If you have an Apple Watch,
then wearing a mask is not an issue. If your watch is on your wrist, is
connected to your iPhone, and has a pass-code, then the iPhone will just unlock
as it recognizes that you have the watch and a partial face recognition. The
iPhone will also instantly ask for your pass-code if it recognizes that you’re
wearing a mask and do not have an Apple Watch.

All this being said, yes, a properly working finger-print sensor would likely
be quicker if you do not have the Apple Watch scenario, but just thought I’d
throw some info into the mix.

Actually, if Face ID does fail, you are presented with the passcode keyboard

I don’t know, but that’s still not as fast as just having Touch ID.

The other thing I don’t understand about this issue is that all the new iPads
come with Touch ID built into the top button. If they can do that on the
iPads, why not also build it into the phones?

Cheers,

Donna.

I must say I am very happy with mine too.
When I got it, my original SE was still working well, although I was using IOS

It's very responsive and most times I have no issue with it.
I even enjoy listening to music on it while I work, without any external
speaker. The sound quality is quite good.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Donna.

My reasons are to do with the touch ID sensor. Would you be happy to

Makes sense, but I am buying unlocked phones so I do not have the same type of
incentives that you do.

I know some people do AT for a living so having the latest phone can be an
essential part of the business.

The other thing for me is that upgrading is kind of the gift that keeps on
giving. I really do get a crazy good price on a new phone from my employer.
Part of that is based on trading in my old phone. So, this year, for example,
I’ll get much more for trading in a 12 than I would for trading in an 11 or an
SE, which in turn, reduces the price on the new phone. So staying with the
current model pays off.

I have not noticed any significant lag when VoiceOver tries to describe images

I’d consider the Mini iPhones if it had touch ID.

That is more important to me than power since I have a M1 mac and a Windows PC
capable of scanning documents.

I think this is very much a question of personal preference. I understand what
you’re saying, but I like my devices to run fast. Patience is not one of my
greatest virtues. So, is there any app that wouldn’t run on the SE? Probably
not. Will those apps run faster on a 13 mini? Undoubtedly. And personally,
that’s something I care about. Not saying everyone has to care about that, but
I do. Also, as Apple does more with screen recognition, AI, and spatial audio,
the more powerful phones will be able to make better use of those features.

Apple is like any other company in that they can’t produce something new every
year that no one has seen before.

Sometimes, it is just upgrades.

There is nothing wrong with that, but it is a good idea to pause and ask
yourself if this is really something worth buying based on your own needs.

The older iPad 5th generation was something new that I had not used before, and
I wanted something with better sound quality.

RE: IPhone SE 2020 (2nd generation)

Good point about the OCR and other apps that use artificial intelligence and
the neural engine.

I have not noticed any significant lag when VoiceOver tries to describe images
in apps using the SE 2020 IN IOS 14.

I have to say that my biggest disappointment in Apple’s presentation last week
was that the new phones won’t have touch ID. I have the 12 mini, and I’ll
probably upgrade to the 13 mini, but only because I get a good upgrade price

can’t justify switching to the SE, because it’s got so much less power than the
other phones.

Hi.

I must say I am very happy with mine too.
When I got it, my original SE was still working well, although I was using IOS
11 on it. lol

It's very responsive and most times I have no issue with it.
I even enjoy listening to music on it while I work, without any external
speaker. The sound quality is quite good.

Hope this helps.

Take care,

Why do you feel you need the extra power?

Hello,

I’ve decided to upgrade from iphone 8 to iphone SE 2nd generation (2020).
My reasons are to do with the touch ID sensor. Would you be happy to
share your views/opinions on this iphone with me?

The sound quality on the SE is good, but it doesn't match the Mac or iPad.
The only limitation for the SE2020 is that it doesn't support Lidar, and I do
not think it has 5G.
However, those features are not a priority for me.
I just hope that it will continue to receive IOS updates now that the iPhone

Take care,
Tali

I love the iPhone SE 2020.
It is the same size as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8.
It is fast though there have been complaints about the battery.
It is the best iPhone I've owned.

I got mine shortly after it came out, and I am very happy I did it. It's very
snappy in terms of response, and has done everything I've asked it to with no
complaints. I occasionally like to shoot video for my sighted wife, and I love
how you can set the phone up to landscape and get true stereo sound as well. So
my wife gets to see the visual, and I get to hear neat audio. I don't download
much stuff, so the 64GB model was just fine for my needs. If you have any more
specific questions, just ask.
