Evening folks, I trust that everyone is doing well. For the folks that live in
California, I am looking for accessible grocery store apps for a friend. She
knows of the Safeway app and I'm just wondering if there are any others that I
can point her in the direction to. I told her about the Walmart app, and she
already knew about the Walgreens app. So are there any others?

It just dawned on me while working with fusion that it really has gotten very
good from an accessibility and over all stability stand point. I know some on
list have commented it’s over priced and the upgrade methods have a lot to be
desired and there are strong points to be made but as someone who started with
Fusion 3 and is now using the latest 8.x version it’s gotten so much easier to
use. Things like the menus being nicely accessible while in the VM through
voiceover, really smooth and predictable startup and shutdown of VMs, the
windows initial registration and setup worked and the integration with a laptop
(power off / restore / hibernate etc) works great. Anyone else agree or am I
some how lucky or to clueless to no better.:)

I’m over all just finding I’m using the product and not fighting with the
product, which is a huge improvement. Other comments encouraged? In my case
I’m running on a Macbook Pro environment one 15 with 2.6 ghz I7 and the other
a 13 with upgraded CPU, 16 and 8 GB respectively. All on SSD entirely.

Re: Looking for grocery store apps in California

2015-10-29 Thread Scott Granados
Pea Pod is also an option and I’m not sure but I believe that area may be
covered by the Amazon expansion in to groceries and same day delivery.
Definitely worth checking out.

Also, I can’t speak highly enough of the Safeway service. I used to order
entirely online from the train and everything would be delivered on time every
time. All for $4.95. If ou wanted they would go so far as to put them away
for you. You could have your super let them in or make arrangements (one time
use iPhone lock passes etc) or just have someone meet them and they would load
in to where ever you wanted. Great service.

Re: VM Fusion 8.1 user experience comments

2015-10-29 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

I very much agree. The only issue I sometimes have is that keys in the VM are
sometimes held down, especially when in conjunction with shift, although this
is actually because of VoiceOVer's quick nav issue. Aside from that unrelated
Fusion bug that causes the VM to act weird, it's very nice. They've done really
well with it. I'm more than happy to keep upgrading, and I started out with
VmWare Fusion 3. It's come a long way since then.

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-29 Thread Scott Granados
That was a separate suggestion.

Along with celebrating the battery I suggested a reboot after upgrading using
that method. They are not done together or mutually exclusive in anyway two
independent things. If you don’t reboot it’s not a problem. Think of that
move as a soft reset.

Re: Some Information for A T & T Wireless Customers Who Recently Enabled WiFi Calling or Who Were Recently Switched to HD Voicemail

2015-10-29 Thread Scott Granados
So what I’ve learned from this is people still use voicemail. Really? :)

I can’t remember the last time I left a VM. Text sure and emails but voicemail
I’m really not sure. It’s funny how habits like this change over time. I
remember when I used to use voicemail all the time and had all the various
transcribing and repackaging gimmicks.

Interesting they have a separate what they call HD voicemail system. I suspect
this is better put 3G verses 4G and I wonder why they couldn’t integrate both
in to one since I know the features are supported.

Re: [Bulk] [Bulk] [Bulk] still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-29 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, John its Katie. I tried using the glass sound effect when I checked for new
mail 2 days ago, and nothing happened. Then I went back to the new mail sound
and when I check for new messages, I still don’t hear anything. I’m having no
luck at this. In mail preferences in the general tab, I have the checkbox
checked for play sounds for other mail actions. In the notification center, I
have alerts and sounds checked for the mail app. The notification center is
something new I haven’t seen on my Mac before since I upgraded from Snow
Leopard. I’m not sure why this isn’t working.
Do you have any other ideas? Should I have someone at the Apple store look at
my Mac again?
Thanks.

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-29 Thread Grant
Hi Scott,

The following is a direct quotation taken from the section of Apple’s website
that you linked to:

"Charge your Apple lithium-ion battery whenever you want. There’s no need to
let it discharge 100% before recharging. Apple lithium-ion batteries work in
charge cycles. You complete one charge cycle when you’ve used (discharged) an
amount that equals 100% of your battery’s capacity — but not necessarily all
from one charge. For instance, you might use 75% of your battery’s capacity one
day, then recharge it fully overnight. If you use 25% the next day, you will
have discharged a total of 100%, and the two days will add up to one charge
cycle. It could take several days to complete a cycle. The capacity of any type
of battery will diminish after a certain amount of recharging. With lithium-ion
batteries, the capacity diminishes slightly with each complete charge cycle.”

Link: "http://www.apple.com/batteries/why-lithium-ion/

My understanding was always that lithium ion batteries do not require
calibration and that consistently letting them discharge to 0% and/or allowing
them to remain at 0% for long periods of time may in fact shorten their
lifespan. But I’m no battery scholar by any means, and there’s much conflicting
information online about batteries and charging.

2015-10-29 Thread Blee Blat
I'll look at that. I didn't know they serviced batteries. I thought they just
meant you had to get a new phone.
It seems to be behaving normally, this happened awhile ago but it seems to
have resolved itself but I'll check the diagnostics and see if it shows up
anything.

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-29 Thread Grant
I’d agree that the most likely result of a battery calibration would be a
possible, small improvement in the battery gauge's accuracy. But I don’t think
it should be huge. If folks are getting really bizarre battery readings such as
the gauge being stuck at 100% as you described, I’d wonder whether your battery
requires service. If you go to http://getsupport.apple.com, you can run a
diagnostic test to help determine this. Select “battery, power and charging”
then select “general questions or troubleshooting” and follow the prompts to
send some diagnostic data to Apple. A message should be displayed if the
battery requires service based on the results of the diagnostic data. I saw
strange battery readings on an iPhone 5S a while ago, ran the diagnostics, and
was told my battery required service. I was then able to bring the phone to
Apple and get a new battery, which was covered under my AppleCare Plus..

On Oct 29, 2015, at 12:09 PM, Blee Blat wrote:

Yeah, I'm not a scholar of batteries either but over time if you don't run the
battery down to 0% periodically you may find that the fuel gauge gets out of
sync. So you can have a situation for example when your battery charge says 0%
but the phone is still working, or you can have 30% charge and a powered off
device. So that's what your calibrating is the charge readout probably not the
battery itself.
I think you could get into situations too where if the gauge on the battery is
out of sync with the cells, it might attempt to charge an already filled
battery unnecessarily, but I think there is a few other checks to prevent that
from happening. I'm not sure what programmatically goes on in battery
management firmware.
It is probably slightly different for every firmware.
I don't calibrate batteries regularly but I had to do that once because the
phone and computer were showing weird battery numbers.
I had them both showing 100% charge after a full 8 hours of heavy use. So maybe
this clears up some things or if I'm misunderstanding something then we can
find some decent answers and not get confused. I think battery firmware changes
with every update too.
Maybe this is related to the random reboots and failed sign-ins to icloud stuff
after ios 9.1 updates, neither of which were fixed from a full restore from
itunes but I don't know. But phone is very unhappy at the moment.

Apple TV (2015) cNet Review
The smoothest streaming TV today, powerful potential tomorrow

The Good The new Apple TV delivers the most polished video experience today,
with speedy reactions and a familiar yet attractive interface. It has the
best remote on the market. Siri's voice search makes finding stuff to watch
even easier, with search results pulled from numerous services beyond
iTunes. The selection of TV-based apps is very good, and AirPlay can be used
for unsupported apps.

The Bad Apple TV costs more than similar devices like the Roku, Amazon Fire
TV and Chromecast for basically the same core functions. There's no
dedicated app for Amazon or any other a la carte video service beyond
iTunes. Non-entertainment apps aren't very compelling yet.

The Bottom Line The new Apple TV's awesome remote and voice control make it
one of the best entertainment devices, especially for anyone who already
owns plenty of Apple gadgets.

Editors' note: This review refers to the US version. Some details, in
particular available video-streaming apps, will vary in different
territories.

I have a confession to make. I'm an Android guy.

I've always owned Samsung phones and Windows computers, and tell family
members to get Amazon Fire tablets. I bought a Mac in college but ended up
paying a fortune for it as part of a student loan program and never bought
one again. While my work laptop is a MacBook (a recent switch), the only
Apple product I've spent my own money on in the last 15 years is an iPad for
my wife, and now it gets used mostly to entertain the kids during car rides.

But some of the smartest people I know swear by Apple products, and after
playing with the new Apple TV for the last few days, I can see why. I've
tested just about every other box and stick from Roku, Amazon and Google
over the years, not to mention countless Smart TV systems and plenty of game
consoles. All of them can stream videos from services like Netflix, Hulu and
YouTube to your television, but none feels as nice as the new Apple TV.

The remote is simply the best I've ever used. Equipped with a responsive,
thumb-sized touchpad it flies through menus, lists of TV show thumbnails and
videos themselves, putting conventional cursor-based controls to shame. And
voice search -- I guess you Apple people call it "Siri" for some reason --
works very well, and can do a lot more than just find stuff to watch.

The new Apple TV is not perfect. It costs more than comparable devices --
always my main gripe about Apple products. It lets you play plenty of games,
but titles originally designed for phones and tablets aren't necessarily as
appealing on a big screen, and most work best with a third-party game
controller. And it galls me that the Apple TV remote is so good, I'd have to
keep it around in addition to my system-mastering Harmony rather than
consigning it to a drawer like my other clickers.

My main issue though is lack of a real app for Amazon Video, my
second-favorite streaming video service after Netflix. I don't know who to
blame, Amazon or Apple or the streaming gods themselves, but regardless, it
doesn't make any sense, especially since there's an Amazon app for iPhones
and iPads. With Amazon's recent decision to boot Apple TV and Chromecast
devices from its store, I don't expect an Amazon app for Apple TV anytime
soon.

If you're an Apple fan who owns a lot of TV shows, movies and games on Apple
devices already, the new Apple TV is absolutely worth the money. For people
like me, however, it's a tougher sell. I like Roku better overall for its
price-savvy search and wider app selection including Amazon, Sling TV and
Spotify, as well as its more affordable hardware.

To get the most out of Apple TV you need to be invested already in the Apple
universe, with games, TV shows and movies you've purchased from iTunes and
the App Store. That's a shame since it offers the best streaming experience
today, and more potential tomorrow once app developers go to town finding
ways to exploit the big screen and that slick remote. But if the previous
Apple TV was any indication, this one's only going to grow more appealing.

Pricing information: The new Apple TV comes in in two versions: $149 for the
32GB model, and $199 for the 64GB model. The previous Apple TV, first
released in 2012, remains on sale at $69, £59 and AU$109. In the UK, the new
model costs £129 for the 32GB and £169 for 64GB, while in Australia they
cost AU$269 and AU$349. For most people I recommend the 32GB version. See "A
choice of sizes:
32GB vs. 64GB" below for details.

It's been more than three and a half years since the first Apple TV went on
sale, but Apple didn't

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-29 Thread Blee Blat
Maybe this is related to the random reboots and failed sign-ins to icloud
stuff after ios 9.1 updates, neither of which were fixed from a full restore
from itunes but I don't know. But phone is very unhappy at the moment.

Just wondering.

Do you have a custom sound you can copy into your user library/sounds
folder? If so, I would try using that one just to see if that works.

2015-10-29 Thread Kjsc Radio
Hello all.
Is anybody having a problem with i messages sending slow when signing into
iCloud? I am also having a problem or if I receive a text from the contact, the
contact card is not showing up in my messages app on my mac. I have tried both
re signing into iCloud and iMessage, but still I get the same results. I am
running the latest version of El Capitan.

The only thing I can think of is you may have pressed the enter/return key to
edit the name rather than open it one time and you somehow deleted the C and
the K. If that's the case, press enter/return and edit it the way it's supposed
to be. My Alex says Mackintosh HD here correctly so can't reproduce that

Re: Some Information for A T & T Wireless Customers Who Recently Enabled WiFi Calling or Who Were Recently Switched to HD Voicemail

2015-10-29 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Scott.

I’ve not used Voice Mail for years. If people can’t get me, I encourage them
to leave me a text message or I just forward my calls to another phone such as
my work number. I also have got the phone provider that I’m with to switch off
the mailbox so no messages can be left.

California, I am looking for accessible grocery store apps for a friend. She
knows of the Safeway app and I'm just wondering if there are any others that I
can point her in the direction to. I told her about the Walmart app, and she

Curious About Checkbook/Checkbook Pro

2015-10-29 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve been looking for an OSX app that is generally similar to the Windows
“Talking Checkbook” and have found “Checkbook” and “Checkbook Pro” so far.
After reading the descriptions for these apps that the “Pro” version is
probably more than I need. I do have several questions about both or either
versions:

- Is anyone out here a user of either version?
- Are these apps effectively developed to work with VoiceOver?
- Is customer support genuinely responsive to the requirements of blind
customers?

If you do VO-k, does VoiceOver announce the hotspots correctly? If so, then

Re: Hotspots not working properly.

2015-10-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Yes, Anne, I did do the clean install. I initially installed over Yosemite but
had issues many more issues than now. So I took the plunge, researched it
carefully and performed clean install. Hotspots and Safari holding onto VO
focus although not every time nor consistently are the major issues for me now.
The rest works very well indeed.

Some Information for A T & T Wireless Customers Who Recently Enabled WiFi Calling or Who Were Recently Switched to HD Voicemail

2015-10-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

As the following is extremely important to my enjoyment of iPhone and in so
much as I think it an important tool for many of us, I am going to post this
to both the Mac Visionaries and V iPhone mailing lists.

Please note that I can only verify the following on the A T & T Wireless
network.

Generally speaking, the default time it takes for an incoming call to be
sent to voicemail is approximately 20 seconds or, from the caller's point of
view, 4 rings.

For many years, it has been possible to increase the time it takes an
incoming call to be sent to voicemail to as much as 30 seconds. You might
not think 10 seconds would make that much of a difference but, believe me,
it does.

Needless to say, I had my settings set to 30 seconds. Although A T & T
Wireless customer service representatives would change this account setting,
upon request, it was actually possible, through a series of service dial
commands, to adjust the setting directly from iPhone.

Those of you who, like me, were using the increased value setting, noticed
that upon having your account provisioned for HD voicemail, a requirement in
order to take advantage of WiFi calling, lost the benefit of the increased
value. That is to say, incoming calls, once again, were going to voicemail
after 20 seconds, instead of 30. You may have also noticed that the service
dial commands, once used to manually adjust this setting, is no longer
valid.

Well, as it turns out, the delay value previously set, only applies to the
legacy voicemail system and not to the new HD voicemail system.

The good news is that you can call A T & T Wireless, 800-331-0500, and have
the customer service representatives adjust the incoming call setting but
you must be certain to tell the rep, as many of them are not yet aware, to
make the adjustment to the HD voicemail system and not the legacy system,
the system that first appears when an account is displayed.

Even better, the new system allows for even longer delay times than did the
legacy system. I currently have my delay time set to 40 seconds. It is
absolutely marvelous.

Some of you may be wondering why one would want to have such a high delay
time. The answer is that it gives one, more time to reach the phone, should
she/he be in a different room than the phone or time to dry his/her hands
before touching the phone, etc.

One final thing, many representatives may not know that the new system delay
time can be adjusted; so if they do not know how to adjust the time,
graciously insist that it can be done and request that your call be
escalated to the next level of technical support.

I am happy to say that a couple of acquaintances, with whom I first shared
this information, have, like me, taken advantage of this new feature set
and, also like me, are happier than clams in clam sauce (smile).

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Re: More on hotspots.

2015-10-29 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hello Anne and Anders,

the same issues occur on my german keyboard layout.

Regarding the answers of the accessibility team: I don’t think they let blind
VO users work in their team and so, if someone’s not using VO on a daily base,
a lot of issues do not occur because they show up randomly. I started to ignore
the answer, it should depend on my device or other installed software, and my
hope is they will keep it in mind if others report this issue.

The second strategy is simply to call them. I experienced several times that
they couldn’t duplicate an issue via e-mail. But when I called them, told them
to take the same stepps I took, they suddenly could duplicate the issue and
wrote a note about it.

Once I called them and he couldn’t confirm my issue. Then I asked him wether he
switched on VO and he appologized because he tried the behaviour I reported
with VO switched off. So it might be good to tell them personally how to do it.

All the best

Re: still no new message sound in Mail

2015-10-29 Thread Craig Werner
I was one of the first people to report this problem to the VoiceOver
community. All sound preferences were set properly, and no amount of mail
sound to tweaking restored the new mail sound. I reported the problem to
Apple and was told by a rep that he had run into the problem with some
users, but it is not on the list of El Capitan emerging issues. For this
and other reasons, I rolled back to Yosemite 10.10.5.
