Title:
Allow /local and custom theme override of Plugin templates

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
One of the handiest features for site admins to tweak their Mahara
site without making hacks that make upgrades difficult, is the
relatively obscure local theme overrides feature:
  https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Customising/Themes/1.2#Local_theme_overrides

Theme support is there, but you have to put the theme template
dirctories under the plugin's own theme directory. i.e.
  artefact/internal/theme/primary/static/templates/content.tpl . So,
this is handy for plugin authors, but not for custom theme developers.

  I propose the following:

  1. We allow for /local overrides of plugin templates. The path should
  be local/theme/templates/{plugintype}/{pluginname}/{template} . Or in
the case of plugins that live underneath other plugins (i.e.
  blocktypes under artefacts)

local/theme/templates/{plugintype1}/{pluginname1}/{plugintype2}/{pluginname2}/{template}.

  So:

  local/theme/templates/artefact/internal/content.tpl
  local/theme/templates/artefact/internal/blocktype/textbox/content.tpl

  2. For custom themes, we take a similar approach:
  theme/{themename}/static/templates/{plugintype}/{pluginname}/{template}

  theme/aaronstheme/static/templates/artefact/internal/content.tpl

theme/aaronstheme/static/templates/artefact/internal/blocktype/textbox/content.tpl

  And in order of precedence:

  1. /local theme overrides
  2. custom theme located under /theme directory
  3. theme template files locate under plugin's directory

Title:
Move posts between forums within groups

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Feature request.

  Hi,
While working on the structure of the MacHara user group in Mahara.org it
occurred to me that as the content started to develop within the group some
posts in the general forum would be better situated in other forums created
after those posts were originally written. It would be a useful feature if
posts could be re-organised by moving them to other forums within the group.

In the same context I use a Mahara group within my institution to provide
resources and support forums for using different tools and technology. If
someone posts a question about Mahara (for example) in the Moodle forum it
would be useful to be able to move it to the correct place so that the response
can be found by others looking for the information.
I guess there might also be use cases for being able to move/copy a
discussion topic or post to a completely different group - but I think being
able to manage information within a group would be of wider value.

  Regards, Gordon.

Wishlist/Feature Request: Customise page themes (skins)

  - operating system: Redhat Linux 5.6
  - database: MySQL 5.0.xx
  - Chrome 26, IE9, FireFox 20, Safari 5

I am not registering a bug, but a wishlist/feature request.

I have had a lot of users (approx 95% I talk to) mention that they
would love the ability to have the choice to customise their page
  themes.

I realise this is no small undertaking, and it looks as though some
site themes can be customised via the admin/institution pages - is
this possible for configuring page themes?

I have attached an image with a rough idea for implementation.

Title:
Make it easier to change a user's profile picture

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
When we introduced an internal Mahara at Catalyst, one common
complaint among the new users was that it was really frustrating to
figure out how to change their user icon. The general process was
  something like this:

  1. Click on the user icon or username at the top right of the page
  2. This takes them to their user profile Page, which has a button that says
click here to edit this page
  3. So, they click the edit button. That lets them edit which blocks are on
their profile Page, but not to actually edit their profile content directly
  4. So, they click the Settings button in the upper right
  5. This takes them to their account settings page, which has a lot of
options, but no user profile
  6. They repeat this in a frustrated circle.

Of course, the actual way to edit your user icon is to go to the
Contents menu, and there's a tab underneath that. But I think, to
avoid frustrating new users, it would make sense to put a link to this
and/or an explanatory note from the user's profile Page and/or account
settings page, to the Profile content and Profile Picture content
  pages.

Hide or move the Retractable and Automatically retract controls
  for blocks

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
One of the things I've identified that has made Mahara less user-
friendly since version 1.4, is all the added controls everywhere. It's
good to have all these features, but for the new users and non-power-
users who don't use them, they're just clutter.

One in particular that I thing would be good to deal with, are the
universal Retractable and Automatically retract controls. These
are at the top of the edit popup for every block you edit or create,
where they take up a lot of real-estate and push the actual content
  creation fields further down.

It would be wonderful if we could:

  1) refactor these so they take up less space. Currently, they're
displayed on three lines: title, then the checkbox, then the
description. All these bits could be on one line.

  2) move them away from the head of the block. Maybe to the bottom? Or
maybe in an advanced Display tab?

Bug description:
At the moment in site options one can set if they want drop-down
navigation for setting the main menu tabs as drop down

it would be good if this functionality could be overridden at an
institutional level so that Institution A has drop-down navigation but
Institution B doesn't when using the same theme.

Also could have the user then override the institution's option if
$cfg-sitethemeprefs = true; allowing them to choose whether they want
  drop-down navigation or not.

When an admin is on User search, he can search for users of an
institution, but does not see which authentication method they use. If
you have multiple auth methods set up and you need to change users
from one to another, you would have to go into each account to find
out the auth method or you would need to do a DB query. It would be
better if it were possible to have the auth method displayed in one of
the columns and filter by it.

I would not put the auth method into the drop-down menu where you can
choose the institutions because then you would never be able to see
all users of one institution if you had multiple auth methods.

  Enhancement / New Functionality
Hi, I couldn't see any mention of this in other requests or on the roadmap so
thought I'd request it.

Moodle 2.3 now has a working drag drop tool so that users can click
on external files on their desktop and drag then straight to the
Moodle course page. It would be great if we could do the same in
Mahara, taking advantage of HTML5 functionality so that users could
add portfolio artefacts to pages just by dragging them into the
  browser.

Here's the Moodle tracker issue that led to this functionality in that system
http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-22504
Here's a YouTube video of this in action http://youtu.be/4u78GLksPL8

Actual result: You see only the embedded PDF block's title (in FF and
Chromium) or the title and a grayed-out scrollbar (in IE).

So it looks like the problem may be that some of the JS is not getting
included into the page when a logged-out user views it.

Leap2a support for pages with custom flexible layouts

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The current leap2a import code for flexible layouts can't handle a
page with a custom layout. If the page's layout doesn't match any of
the ones in the database, it just skips that page.

What we ought to do instead, is, if the layout described is legal,
just create a new custom layout for the user, and use that.

  Improve stylesheet cacheing

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
There is no purge the stylesheet cache functionality in Mahara. This
lack of functionality prevents stylesheet changes to be seen directly
and generally, users will need to clear their browser cache.

  Suggestion from Pace University:

Add a URL parameter for the version of Mahara in which the stylesheet
  changes.

So for example, instead of calling

   link rel=stylesheet type=text/css
  href=/theme/raw/static/style/style.css

  consider calling the 1.7.1 stylesheet:

   link rel=stylesheet type=text/css
  href=/theme/raw/static/style/style.css?v=1_7_1

  and in version 1.8.1 call:

   link rel=stylesheet type=text/css
  href=/theme/raw/static/style/style.css?v=1_8_1

So the stylesheet would be still be named style.css, but the URL
parameter will prevent the browser from using a locally cached
  version.

Make a copy link while first editing the Text Box.

  To reproduce:

  2. Create a page
  3. Put a Text Box on the page. Give it some content so you can tell it apart
from others.
  4. Put a second Text Box on the page. Use the Use content from another text
box link to make it use the same Note as the first Text Box.

Expected Results: When you select the first text box, in addition to
seeing its content in the config form, you should also see a link that
says If you edit the text of this block, it will also be changed in 1
other block(s) where it appears. Make a copy?

Actual Result: You do not see that link.

  Carrying on...

  5. Save the second text box.
  6. Click the edit icon for the second text box to edit it further
  7. You will now see the link that asks where you would like to Make a copy.
  8. Click on that link.
  9. Change the contents of the block.
  10. Save the block.

Expected Result: The content of the second block will change, and
there will now be two Notes in your Content-Notes page

Title:
Can't accept/decline group membership requests from the pending
  members page

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
While responding to this forum post

https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=5637offset=0limit=10#post24285
, I noticed that in Mahara 1.8, there was no Add user/Decline
button underneath a user's name on the Pending Members page for a
group. Instead there is a Remove from group button which does
nothing, because the user is not yet a member of the group.

This appears to be a regression in master, because it works fine in
  1.7

  To replicate:

  1. Create a group
  2. Mark it Controlled and Request
  3. Log in as a second user
  4. Request membership in the group
  5. Log back in as the group creator/admin
  6. Navigate to the Pending Members page (either by clicking on the link on
the notification you will have received, or by going to the group, clicking the
Members tab, and then changing from Current to Requests

Expected Result: You should see the user who requested membership, with
buttons to add them or decline their request
Actual Result: You'll see the user, with a button that says Remove from
group

Bug description:

i found a bug relating to the commit done for this bug:

  I'm got this error:
[WAR] fd (lib/errors.php:749) Failed to get a recordset: mysql error: [1064:
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your
MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'FALSE' at line 1] in
EXECUTE(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM usr u WHERE u.id 0 AND u.deleted = 0AND
FALSE)
Command was: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM usr u WHERE u.id 0 AND u.deleted =
0AND FALSE

Looks like the line 463 in search/internal/lib.php needs to be

   $where .= ' AND FALSE';

  not

  $where .= 'AND FALSE';

So I submitted a patch https://reviews.mahara.org/#/c/2281/ to fix it

Use content from another text box not displaying 'copy' message

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
  Version mahara 1.8

  Problem:
The 'If you edit the text of this block, it will also be changed in 1 other
block(s) where it appears. Make a copy' message is not displayed anymore if you
choose to use content from another text box and have license metadata turned
off in the config.

The javascript was expecting to find certain license elements and
update their css - but they did not exist in this scenario.

  Solution:
I've added a sanity check to only try and update them if the first license
element exists.

I've also altered the layout of the instance edit display so that
things make more sense - eg keep the choosing of another text box
functionality to appear directly below the wysiwyg editor (as it did
  in previous mahara version)

  If you have:
  1. a forum post and then
  2. add a child post to it then
  3. add a grandchild post to the child post
  4. add a great-grandchild post to the grandchild post
  5. delete child post

You now can't edit the grandchild post even though it has an edit
button because it's 'parent' is deleted.

The file interaction/forum/editpost.php is the page that throws up the
  error:

 Not found
The page you are looking for could not be found.

Could not find post with id 2

You can however edit the great-grandchild post as it has a viable
  'parent'.

Either you should be able to edit the child of a deleted parent - or
you shouldn't be given an edit button if you can't.

My 2 cents believes you should be able to edit an orphan child as not
having a parent is irrelevant to the text of the post that the child
  displays.

The Mahara password reset page is vulnerable to this. You can simply

default access, make that short and clearer and then revisit the

Title:
Use adodb mysqli instead of mysql

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Mahara is currently using the adodb mysql driver for MySQL
connections. This is based on an older PHP library which is no longer
in active development and lacks certain features, most notably
  transactions (see for instance
  https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=5434 ).

We should probably switch to the adodb mysqli driver, which is built
on the newer mysqli PHP library and *does* support transactions.

There are two ways we could go about this gracefully:

  1. When a user supplies the string mysql5 in their config.php file,
we could silently interpret this to mean that they want to use the
mysqli driver. (We could alternately provide some other way to
indicate they want to use the older mysql library if we really want
  to support it.)

  2. OR, we could show the admin a warning message after they
upgrade/install, which tells them they should really change the
mysql5 in their config.php to mysqli.

I support option #1. Given that we only support mysql and postgres,
there's no reason we shouldn't abstract away the connection between
config.php and the name of the underlying adodb driver. (For that
matter, we should probably change the recommended dbtypes from
mysql5 and postgres8 to just mysql and postgres).

Bug description:
This bugs me every time I do a clean Mahara install (which as a
developer, tends to be several times a day). The list of plugins on
the install page is vertically longer than my browser window. And,
since I have $cfg-productionmode=false, this list gets pushed further
and further down the page by the log_info() notices that show up at
the top of the page. Even with productionmode=true, the tickmarks on
each line expand the line a bit, which causes enough page expansion to
move the bottom of the list off of the page.

As a result, there's no quick visual indicator of when the install
process is complete. I have to keep manually scrolling down as it
goes, or just go away and come back some time later.

Moodle's installer/updater has the handy functionality that when it's
done, it leaps you to the bottom of the page where the Continue link
is. I'd like to see the same in Mahara.

Embedded PDF block not degrading gracefully in unsupported browsers

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
This relates to the new (in Mahara 1.8) embedded PDF block:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1036556

  In https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1211070 we introduced
behavior that causes it to show a link to the PDF when the page is
  viewed with JS turned off.

However, it still looks lousy if you view it in a non-Firefox browser
  with JS turned on.

  To test:

  1. Create a page with an embedded PDF block
  2. View it in Chrome or IE10, with Javascript turned on

Expected Result: You should see the inline PDF, or you should see a link to
download the file
Actual Result: In IE10 you see a grayed-out scrollbar with nothing next to
it; in Chrome you see nothing but the block title.

When you are on admin/edit.php or admin/add.php, the password you
enter for a user is displayed in cleartext. This is not good esp. when
you have form filling turned on in your browser as it remembers the
  passwords that you typed in.

The easiest solution is to make this field type password so that it
is treated like a password field.

More complicated would be to allow the admin to toggle between viewing
the password or not (like in Moodle) or to implement a password
confirmation (like on the account settings page).

It appears to be only used in that one place, as a flag to set up more

start with //www.youtube.com, no http://;. This is a standard type
of relative URL/URI, but our code doesn't support it.

Since we already store the allowed iframe domains without a protocol
in front of them, we should also support these protocol-relative URLs.

  To replicate:
  1. Open up a YouTube video on youtube.com
  2. Click Share and then Embed
  3. Make sure you have NOT ticked the Use old embed code box
  4. You should get an iframe embed code, like this: iframe width=420
height=315 src=//www.youtube.com/embed/NkyEOrQiGMQ frameborder=0

  5. Paste this into an external media block or a text block in Mahara

Title:
Drop zone does not respect image resizing unselect status

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Mahara 1.8.0dev

When an image with dimensions larger than the recommended dimensions
is uploaded and the resizing of images option is not selected, the
  image is resized nevertheless.

  Reproduce:

  1. As site admin turn on Resize images upon uplod at
/admin/extensions/pluginconfig.php?plugintype=artefactpluginname=filetype=file
  2. Tick both boxes: Automatic resize and user option.
  3. Upload an image by using the drop zone.
  4. The image is resized to the default dimensions.

Also test the setting when you have default resizing turned on on your
account settings page and then take off the check mark on the file
  upload page.

Bug description:
  Confirmed on demo.mahara.org

When you have more than 10 text boxes with a similar title and search
for them, the correct number of results is shown on the first page
below the results, but when you move to the second page, the number of
results change and thus the search term is not respected anymore.

E.g. I have 16 text boxes altogether. When I search for portfolios,
I get 8 results on the first page. When I move to the second page,
suddenly I have 12 results and when I go to the third page, I have 14
  results.

Since the search in the blocks Journal entry and Journal is
essentially the same, these blocks are most likely also affected.

  proxy exceptions feature is missing

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
The Proxy settings on Mahara are lacking the ability to set proxy
exceptions for bypassing required hosts (we are on 1.5.x). I have seen
that usually proxy exceptions are the part of proxy settings.

We come across this issue while implementing SSO between our internal
servers (not exposed to the world) where proxy settings are used to
  connect with outside world.

To solve this we have implemented this feature, by copying Moodle 2.X
code. This was the easiest way to achieve without wasting a time for
writing this from scratch. It works and it has been tested with all
  scenarios.

We are submitting the SVN patch with this as couldn't figure out how
to commit these changes via Gerrit/Mahara GIT - at this stage it seems
complicated to me. I tried this and failed at the step scp -p -P
  29418 usern...@reviews.mahara.org:hooks/commit-msg .git/hooks/.

I wonder whether the defined practice at
  https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Developer_Area/Pushing_Git_Commits
  is still valid or not.

is dragged into a view, the Personal Information (that is filled out
on the Cover Letter page) is pulled into the view even if there is no
information in the fields. I'm guessing that this happens only if
Save is selected for that region on the Cover Letter page. It is
not dependent on whether there is information in the cover letter
field or not. There is no way to unsave it later.

  To clarify:

-in the cover letter/resume area of My Profile: if an individual
selects the Save button underneath Personal Information, those
fields will automatically be added to a view whenever the Entire
Resume block is added, even if there is no information in any of
those fields. It appears that there is no way to unsave that

During auto-creation of the account, the user must supply a first and

filled in first before anything else is created.

The default journal setting should not be changed to always be updated

  A couple of solutions:
  - take off the non null constraint on the temporary table (will fix similar

Title:
artefact_license error when trying to install with $cfg-dbprefix

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed
Status in Mahara 1.7 series:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
As reported in the Mahara forums:

https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=5376offset=0limit=10#post23189

If you try to install Mahara 1.7 with $cfg-dbprefix turned on, you
get this error: Failed to get a recordset: mysql error: [1146: Table
  'mahara17.artefact_license' doesn't exist] in adodb_throw( SELECT *
  FROM artefact_license LIMIT 1 , ) Command was: SELECT * FROM
  artefact_license LIMIT 1

The problem is that there are some SQL queries in the artefact code
that don't properly have the table names surrounded in {curly
brackets}, which is what the DB libraries use to locate them and put
the DB prefix in front of them.

Title:
'usersuniquebyusername' config option not in lib/config-defaults.php

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
  Mahara 1.6/1.7 etc

Can I suggest that the above config option be added (commented) out to
  the config-defaults.php file?

My selfish concern is that, as it is not there, it may get forgotten
about and we rely heavily on this feature. It may also be useful to
other sites who at the moment will have no clue that it exists.

Title:
  Warning message before deleting journal

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
There should be a warning message when you attempt to delete one of
your journals when it contains journal entries. Otherwise, accidental
  deletion will happen quickly.

Similarly to the deletion of folders / files, the pop-up window should
say something along the lines of You are attempting to delete a
journal. This journal contains entries that are used in ... pages.
There should also be a warning message that you delete a journal with
entries even if the entries are not used in portfolio pages.

Title:
Switching HTML editor from Enable to User defined looses enabled
  setting for users

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=4916

When the HTML editor is set to Enable in the General settings on
/admin/site/options.php before any user makes it onto the site and
only later does the site admin switch it to User-defined, all users
loose the HTML editor though most would probably want to keep it.

Could the site setting be changed so that when a site admin goes from
Enable to User-defined, the HTML editor is still the chosen
setting for users on their accounts settings page? That way, the
majority will not have to change their settings and only the few who
do not want / can work with an HTML editor can make the change.
