While I haven't seen this exact behavior I've noticed that sometimes the apple

I can't say what menu flashes but it's up in the left corner). I have no idea

I personally haven't seen this, but there is perhaps some faulty email data

I don't know the solution but I think plain text is the default because I get
plain text when I copy, here is the text copied from your email

sudo bash add-monitoring-agent-repo.sh --also-install

One thing that might be different (I have no knowledge of the actual

If that is different and the code uses low level operation directly

[MlMt] Running one mail account completely separate from others

2020-12-22 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I have a number of email accounts but I would like to run one account
completely separate from other account, like "this is the only account
currently visible for MailMate". This to avoid some mistakes that could
have some undesirable consequences. I don't mind quitting MailMate
switching from one configuration (with all email accounts except one) to
another (with only one account), in fact this would be perfect for me.

I assume this isn't possible in an easy way, but in case I'm wrong I
would like to know how to do it. My current solution is simply to use
Mail for that account ... but if I could use MailMate for all of them,
great.

so. I'm running Mailmate as usual and notice that it can't connect to
any of my mail providers (several addresses, three different providers).

"OK, your internet is down" you say - well no, all other apps works just
fine

"OK, something is blocking the ports that Mailmate uses to talk to the
servers" - I don't think so, if I try with Mail (only have 1 account
configured) sending/fetching works just fine while Mailmate can't
connect at all. Also, if I quit Mailmate and launch it again everything
works just fine.

from: a...@b.se

This message shows up in my regular work account j...@cs.umu.se. When I
reply to this MailMate sets the the following addresses

from: "a...@b.se" (the one which I used to send the test mail from,
not j...@cs.umu.se)

to: x...@yyy.se (the email address which I don't want to check)

Since you have used POP I assume that you have your emails stored
locally, IMAP (usually) stores your messages on the server. So you will
probably have to export your emails from your POP client to mbox files
and then import them into MailMate. If the messages imported are stored
on the server (if you use MailMate they are unless you install a mail
server locally on you Mac) then you need to have the storage on your
server to do this.

2) What is not to like about IMAP compared to POP?

Probably several things but there are also things to like (simple
migration between clients for example).

(e.g. Will I be able to easily retain my existing 500 mailboxes with

If they live locally (unless you have set some "leave on server" flag in
your mail client) you probably need to do some manual work.

Smart mailboxes work equally well whether you keep your messages in a
single mailbox or file them away as usual. I expect always to continue
using a small range of IMAP mailboxes so I can easily find my most
important messages when I use webmail, my phone, or someone else's
computer: a mailbox for paperless tickets, for example.

I would suggest keeping the inbox(es) as clean as possible. I move all
mailing list emails etc into mailboxes especially for this and then use
smart mailboxes for more fine grained control. And as John writes, there
is no good cross-platform solution for viewing smart mailboxes on your
phone, etc. So for this I keep four mailboxes "DoNow", "Fix",
"Reference", "ReadLater" and have a few shortcuts that quickly let me
move messages to/from these mailboxes. This way I can easily find them
on my phone etc. (My goal is to keep these as empty as possible).

I'm trying to keep an open mind. Just because I've done things one

:D

I tried IMAP a couple of years ago, and I just wasn't happy having to
go onto

the server to get copies of emails I needed to look at again.

Strange, I've never had that happen on a laptop - all email have been
cached locally by the clients I've used.

MailMate would
allow me to find it on my hard drive, but then why do I need a copy
sitting up
on the server? This is obviously a philosophical question about
approach to

email.

Yes, when I switched to IMAP (when I bought my first iPhone and wanted
to access email from it) I had some "mental issues" with this but I've
changed my mind. Having the emails on the server as well as on laptop
have made my life easier, I have the emails in two places, I can easily
try new mail clients or use two email clients on the same machine (yep,
it happens), or use different computers/laptop/ipad/phone/etc. It's
really easy and fast to try something new and/or move around - if I'm
really desperate all I need is a browser and I can access the email from
almost anywhere (happens 1-2 times/year).

The need to access from more than one machine is a possibility in the
future.
Maybe I could try to keep only emails from the last month or year on
the
server and within MailMate. Older stuff that I still want I could
offload to
my main computer. Elsewhere on this list, people have discussed
archiving
emails. DevonThink, EagleFiler, and Foxtrot were mentioned. I could
look

into some sort of approach using one of those.

My personal take on this: don't bother (if you have the disk space),
none of the email archiving solutions I've seen does a really good job.
It's way easier to keep them all on the server, once again assuming you
have the disk space but emails takes up surprisingly little disk space
(at least for me) - for example, my ISP gives me 100GB disk storage and
I'm not anywhere close to use up but a fraction of this (I had to check,
it's a few procent) and at work I have unlimited storage.

So in my case the solutions would be (assuming you already have normal
backup):

1. Don't bother - my current strategy

2. Move the email to be archived into specific mailbox (by year?) and
stop subscribing to them. This way you have the emails available by
   simply subscribing to the mailboxes.

3. If I didn't have disk space I would probably start up an IMAP server
on my NAS at home and use that as a storage solution.

4. My final alternative which I've done a number of times is to save the
mailbox(es) to a text file and in addition store the email in
Devonthink.
That way I have one backup that let me recover my mails in my mail
client

and a quick way to search old emails.

As for moving emails, I've done it the simple way: in my email client

I haven't checked everything in the manual but this is perhaps what you
are referring to

The first mailbox in the mailbox outline, “All Messages”, contains
all messages in your
IMAP account(s) except those in the designated mailboxes for deleted
messages or

messages marked as junk.

My interpretation of this is that All Messages contains all messages in
the IMAP account(s) except deleted and junk (as it says in the manual).
In other words, if you only have one account (as an example) and have
created N number of mailboxes for that mail account then All Messages
will contain the messages stored in those mailboxes also. Inbox will
only contain the messages stored in the designated incoming mailbox.

BTW, it is misleading to say that Inbox is for “new” messages.
Better to say “incoming” messages - their age is irrelevant.

My fault ... I just keep new messages in my incoming mailbox ... so in
my case my statement is true but I realise that this is not true for all
others.

Furthermore, they do not have to include only a Mailbox called Inbox.
Inbox is really a type of standard mailbox. For example, one Outlook
account I use has a mailbox called Clutter, which is also of type
Inbox and is shown by MM together with Outlook’s Inbox (which is
fine). The same is true for Trash, Junk, Sent, Archive, Drafts are —
the actual names of those mailboxes can vary from server to server.

Yes, I know ... I was trying to keep things simple to make easier to
explain the mailboxes.

[MlMt] Automating Mailmate - best way?

2017-01-10 Thread Jan Erik Moström

Hi,

If I want to automate certain aspects of my mail handling what is the
best way to go about this. Classes of things I would like to do are

+ Create a new emails
+ Call on a script with references to one or more selected emails
(+ Trigger a script based an a filter)

I looked at the applescript dictionary and it seem to be pretty basic
(too basic to be useful??). I also looked at some of the bundles and it
looks like any kind of language would work here.

So, is there some language that is a "better choice" for some reason
when interacting with Mailmate? Personally, it doesn't matter much but I
would prefer not to use Cobol, Fortran or APL :D

If you have some other program filtering email before MM sees them, set

[MlMt] Organisation of smart mailboxes?

2016-10-28 Thread Jan Erik Moström
I've started to use a number of smart mailboxes and I want to keep most
of them in a "group" (they belong together but doesn't necessarily have
a relation to each other).

The natural way would be to put these into a "folder" or something
similar. And this is also what I do for handling for example mailing
lists:

smart mailbox for all list mails
smart mailbox for subject A
smart mailbox for subject B
etc

And I can of course create a dummy smart mailbox to contain other smart
mailboxes:

dummy smart mailbox with no rules
smart mailbox for task R
smart mailbox for perston T
etc

For some reason it bothers me (can't explain why :D) to have a smart
mailbox without any function other than to contain other smart
mailboxes. So my question is simply: is there some kind of "folder
functionality" for organising smart mailboxes?

I’m intrigued by comments about Devonthink. Could someone give me a
brief description of the program and how it works? I don’t mean a
technical account, just a short message about how to use it, what it
does, etc. Or a link to where I can find such a descriptions. I’ver
used Evernote for years, love it, and it seems there is overlap.

Devonthink is similar to Evernote in that you can store notes, pdfs, etc
in a database. But Devonthink takes a different approach than Evernote.

Evernote is an online service (at least if you want to take full
advantage of the available features) that has clients on a large number
of platforms. EN stores notes etc in HTML format but it can also "embed"
files, photos, etc in those pages. The OCR is pretty, organization and
searching is average, there is good support from various other
apps/services to use EN. From my point of view I think it works best as
a capture device for web pages - I don't like it very much from a note
taking view (the formatting is also troublesome when working on
different platforms). Biggest problem for me is that it modifies plain
text files when they are stored as notes (tabs etc are removed since the
text is stored as HTML), also no Markdown support.

Devonthink on the other hand is a "local app", i.e. there is no cloud
where you store the data instead everything lives on your Mac (more
about this later). You can create any number of databases, you can
organize each database as you like - for example in a hierarchical
fashion (folders within folders). You can store almost any kind of data
in its original form - so a text file stays a text file, a word file is
a word file. Actually, you can tell Devonthink to index files *outside*
the database which means that you can leave your Word files as normal
files in a folder somewhere on your harddisk but DT will index them and
make them searchable from within DT. DT also contains a web browser, a
very powerful search engine, some "AI" to help you categorize and find
material, etc. It also supports templates and is highly
scriptable/extensible.

Evernote have had the convenience advantage because of the syncing and
the availability on many platforms while DT has pretty much won
everything else except OCR (EN is more convenient).

They both have user interfaces that be considered ... "rough". EN has an
almost flat "learning curve" while DT will surprise you for years you
with functionality that you didn't know existed.

I've used both on-and-off for a long time. And until this summer
Evernote has won because of the convenience aspect, but this summer
Devon Technologies released a new syncing engine together with a new iOS
client ... which makes a huge difference. The convenience advantage is
now gone for Evernote (I'm all macOS/iOS) so I'm now moving my important
stuff to DT - will probably continue to use EN for sharing documents etc
within the family but otherwise I'm going to DT.

Worse is where messages grouped in a folder do not have something

Sorry but it's really simple, just search for the mailing list header or

To add to Fredriks answer

Through the years I've used clients like for example Eudoro, Mail,
Mailsmith (POP only) and now MailMate.

Each of these clients have had their special features that made it more
or less impossible to replicate a setup in one client so that it works
as well in another.

For example: Mailsmith have some lovely filtering abilities that makes
it easy to set up some clever filters that handles for example mailing
lists in a very nice way, but this doesn't work in Mail since the
filtering there is rather primitive (even with extensions). MailMate has
filters but they are not as good as Mailsmith but on the other had there
are smart mailboxes (or should we call them with their real name "saved
searches").

Another thing I like with MailMate is that I can set up shortcuts so by
typing for example "fl" while reading an email I can flag that to being
read later, "ff" for email to be fixed right now, etc. After flagging I
can archive the email and use a few smart mailboxes to display messages
waiting to be acted on (fixed), reference email, waiting for answers,
etc. Very efficient for my situation.

Most of the traffic, probably like 70% of it, are mailing lists, over
200 of them. I do not, of course, read all those messages but only
selected threads. All incoming messages are sorted out by filters into
close to 300 mailboxes.

I just moved my email list address (I use one address when subscribing
to mailing lists) back to my computer after reading them on a gmail
account for a couple of years. And there are a few things that I had to
do differently from previous clients to make MailMate behave the way I
wanted. What I've done is first to set up a simple filtering rule that
moves all list mails into a mailbox (reason: I don't want to see them in
my unified inbox view), then I've set up a few smart mailboxes in an
hierarchical fashion that looks in that mailbox and display the
individual mailing lists.

At the moment it seem to work fine for me but I probably going to make
some changes to this after

What is left in the inbox is some junk that sneaked thru spam filters
and a few misc messages.

To only thing that has stayed constant when switching between clients
have been my use of SpamSieve - my advise is that you shouldn't launch a
mail client without having SpamSieve installed and running.
