Re: MI What is GML and should we MapInfo-ites care?

2000-09-04 Thread Kurt Ackermann

If you want some in-depth info on GML, I would recommend OGC's site,
specifically: http://www.opengis.org/techno/specs/00-029/GML.html

My opinion is that we should at the very least care as interested
participants in the world of GIS. The quest for GIS standards, though by
no means easy, is laudable and deserves the support of those of us who,
though fond of Mapinfo, see it as only part of a bigger picture.

GML seems to offer functionality as both an interchange format and the
potential to really streamline webmapping.

My 2 cents.

Re: MI Importing a File

2000-08-30 Thread Kurt Ackermann

If your entire text file is set up the same way as your example, a quick
and dirty solution could be to open the text file in Excel, a dialog box
will open and you can set the column divisions and cell settings for the
columns in there (I tried it with your example and it was very
straightforward with no need to adjust the column width, only giving the
cells character settings).

That makes a standard excel file which you can copy and paste into a
Mapinfo browser after you create and give settings to a new TAB file.
Ie, you set up a new empty TABle in Mapinfo with the three* (four if you
want some kind of 'id' field) fields you require, then open the browser
which will, of course, be empty; make sure it's active and paste your
copied excel records directly into it.

I don't know Mapinfo's limit for records in one TABle offhand, but it
would just entail creating enough TABles to handle your data if you're
over the limit I assume.

*I'm not sure whether the example you gave was 3 or 4 fields (columns),
but if it is 4 you could avoid the 3rd and 4th overlapping by doing a
global replace, for example of 5 spaces with 10. Again, it's a very
quick and dirty solution and anybody with even a smidgeon of Perl
experience will laugh at it, but it works if you're only semi-computer
literate, like me!

Re: MI Map projection data

2000-08-22 Thread Kurt Ackermann

Simon,

I don't think there will be an easily (or legally!) available useful
copy on the internet, so you'd either have to shell out for a copy or
get one from a kind soul with one to spare. It seems the New
Internationalist will send you one if you subscribe.

I won't even make a pretense of addressing this volatile issue, but
there are a couple of web pages listed below with pretty good background
info about the whole debate, and they have small pictures of the map to
give you some idea of what it looks like. I would especially recommend
taking a look at the article by Crampton available at Robert Frank's
site to get a good idea of the history of the issue (last link below).

Hello

This isn't really a Mapinfo question more a data question.
I want to get hold of a map of the world which I can bring into Mapinfo

that is in Peter's projection. A friend mentioned it at the weekend and

said howdifferent things appear in this map, she's a teacher so I had
to agree.
Anyway, if anyone has such a map they could let me have or point me in
the direction of one on the internet, for download or purely for

We are wanting to include a number of scanned images in MI. Ideally we
would like to manipulate the images in AutoCAD map (rotating, skewing
etc.) before exporting as a TIF/TFW pair.

What is the best/quickest/easiest route for this? As far as I can see
MI
will accept TIFs, but they must be registered... It would be a shame
to
have to have them geo-referenced manually twice... Is there a way of
automating this process or any translators?

Thanks in advance...

Re: MIFSHAPE Conversion

2000-08-17 Thread Kurt Ackermann

Hari,

I don't know which version of MIFSHAPE you are using, but the problem
may possibly be with MIFSHAPE. It has misbehaved for us in the past
also. However, it is also possible that there is something in the MIF
which is causing the problem, as this has also occurred for us. It
doesn't seem to be a problem for going back to TAB, but does interfere
with conversion to other formats.

One possible option (if you have Arcinfo!) is to use Arclink and export
it to e00 format, import this in Arcinfo, then use the 'arcshape'
command to create a shapefile (arcshape has also been known to create
'strange' shapefiles for us, but generally is OK).

If not, a colleague of mine has developed a Perl program which we
sometimes use for doing conversions (MIF/SHP, SHP/MIF, etc) and, barring
any problems inherent to the original files, this usually works quite
well. The program is still in the development stage, so not freely
accessible, but if you don't have any problems forwarding the file I
could try this approach to convert it for you.

Hope that helps.

MI dimension lines

2000-08-15 Thread Kurt Ackermann

Dear Listers,

A colleague wishes to know if there is any automated way to create
dimension lines corresponding to line features in a TABle (the features
are located along a road corridor, but are not the road itself). He is
well aware that this is more of a CAD task/feature than GIS, but not
having CAD at our disposal and having been requested to do this for a
rather large number of TABles, I thought someone on the list might be
able to help. I have searched the list archives and many other places on
the web (poor search technique certainly can't be discounted), but have
not succeeded in finding much of anything.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

MI Re:ProViewer

2000-01-17 Thread Kurt Ackermann

Dear Listers/Mapinfo,

I was wondering if anyone has any idea when a Japanese version
of Proviewer might be coming out or if what seems like a possible
language incompatibility to me can be worked around.

When trying to open a workspace created in MI Pro 4.5 (Japanese
Version), the contents of layout windows were not displayed, only
the somewhat cryptic message 'No Window'.That is, layout windows
existing in the original workspace were there, only their contents
were substituted with the message. Otherwise Proviewer seemed to
open the workspace OK.

Tab files comprising the workspace have names in Japanese
characters, as does the name of the workspace itself, but opened
OK, just the layout didn't.

If anyone has any insight regarding this it would be much
appreciated.

TIA

Re:MI Datum !!

Checking the information in the mapinfow.prj file for our (Japanese) version of

Sandeep, the central meridian for the zone you specified is 123,
however this zone (51) only covers western Okinawa. Examples of
major cities falling into other zones include: Fukuoka/Nagasaki/
Naha, zone 52; Hiroshima/Osaka/Nagoya/Kobe, zone 53; Tokyo/Sendai/
Sapporo/Asahikawa, zone 54; Nemuro/Russian controlled islands,
zone 55. Corresponding central meridians are 129, 135, 141, 147
respectively from west to east.
As for spheroids - Bessel 1841 for UTM, Tokyo 1949 datum.

MI Re:topology problem?

1999-10-07 Thread Kurt Ackermann

Hi Andrea,

I'm certainly not an expert on this, but it sounds like you have a
topology problem somewhere in your table, such as a 'bowtie'
(where 2 linear elements of a polygon cross each other without a
node at the crossing point).

I also have experienced this problem, which is very frustrating
if you have many polygons and don't know exactly where the problem
is located.

I think one of the functions of GeoWiz, which works with FME, is
to address such problems of topology. But these cost money, of
course.

I'm sure someone else can give you better information as to how to
address the problem, I just want to warn you that assuming the
operation was successful despite the error message would be a
mistake, because it has failed to work in at least one location
and possibly more. I think the operation stops and produces the
error message once it has encountered a topological problem that
it can't resolve, leaving the remainder (if any) and the area with
the problem uncompleted. Other problems resulting from the failed
operation, which are not immediately visible, are also possible.

I would also be interested in anyone else's recommended solutions.

Hope that helps even a little!
