Selflessness, solidarity and working for the common good characterize what the
Nobel Peace Prize should be about. These traits aptly describe Cuba’s Henry
Reeve International Medical Brigade, which has saved over 80,000 lives since
2005 and has been fighting COVID-19 in 27 countries. Join us in asking the
Nobel Committee to award Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade a
Nobel Peace Prize!

The information in this article will not be new to many on this list. What I
find interesting is that this is appearing in an AP article and in “mainstream”
newspapers. This is symptomatic of a shift in opinion and will further that
shift in opinion.
ken h

https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/jerusalem-offers-a-grim-model-for-a-post-annexation-future/

Israeli leaders paint Jerusalem as a model of coexistence, the “unified,
eternal” capital of the Jewish people, where minorities have equal rights. But
Palestinian residents face widespread discrimination, most lack citizenship and
many live in fear of being forced out.

Rights groups say that in some aspects, Palestinians in east Jerusalem have
even fewer legal protections than those in the West Bank, where it’s possible
to appeal to international laws governing the treatment of civilians in
occupied territory.

Cultural organizers from the US and Canada have come together with the

recognizing the distinct contributions to the world during the Covid-19
pandemic. The concert will salute Cuba’s heroic and outsized contributions to
health care around the world as doctors have volunteered this year to serve in
more than 26 countries. These contributions have been in spite of severe
depredations imposed by US sanctions under Trump and the ongoing blockade. For
these sacrifices and more, many around the world are calling for the 2020 Nobel

Received today.

As most of you already know, the situation in Lebanon is dire and it's getting
worse by the day. This is especially true for migrant workers in the country
who have seen their wages obliterated by the free fall of the local currency
and the dollar shortages.

Alongside supporting migrant workers organize against the Kafala system and
launching many protests/propaganda campaigns to garner momentum that call for
the dismantling of the Kafala system, we have also launched this crowdfunding
initiative in order to support migrant workers in their fight against Kafala.

I really hope I can count on you to donate and disseminate this crowdfunding
campaign (even 100$ can make a difference since our currency is extremely
volatile).

Here's a link to the campaign:

I watched the film, preparing for a discussion group near me.
I was interested int he criticism of various billionaires and their program of
action, as well as the criticism of political figures such as Al Gore.

So I looked forward to what the filmmakers would propose. And what was their
proposal? “We must get ourselves under control.” This is open to
interpretation as they did not elaborate.
For his part, having pointed to the shortcomings of Al Gore, Moore is
campaigning for Joe Biden.

"When even people
with college education talk about cinema,
we post movie reviews from pedestrian

It seemed clear to me when Louis posted the Agee review, it was not to further
our understanding of the movie, or intended to serve as a review, but rather to
illustrate the racist support for the movie. With that purpose in mind, it was
useful to post it.

Decades ago I saw a one-person performance of something I recall as Scarlett
Fever. The performer grew up in Georgia and gave us a lesson on racism in that
state. He suggested that the crowd that turned out to the premiere of Gone
With the Wind was bigger than the population of Atlanta itself. I’m not sure
he was right, but the massive crowd meant that every human being living in
Atlanta was there or, as he said, people flooded into Atlanta. He said it was
one of the biggest celebrations of white supremacy since the Civil War. See
the account below.
ken h

http://www.aboutnorthgeorgia.com/ang/Atlanta_Premiere_of_Gone_With_The_Wind

Noticeably absent were Hattie McDaniel (Mammy) and Butterfly McQueen (Prissy),
black actresses with major roles who were not welcome in the white side of the
segregated Atlanta society. Noticeably present was a young Martin Luther King,
Jr., who sang in a "negro boys choir" from his father's church, Ebenezer
Baptist.

* * * * * *

Spotlights swept the sky with huge beacons of light. Peachtree at Pryor Street
was closed to traffic. An enormous crowd, numbering 300,000 people according to
the Atlanta Constitution, lined the streets on this ice-cold night in Atlanta.
Car after car paused at Lowe's Grand Theater as the stars came out. Wild cheers
greeted each celebrity as they braved the cold to participate in a brief radio
interview.

A rousing ovation greeted a group Confederate veterans who were guests of honor.

Belgium’s colonial crimes in the Congo. A duty to remember
https://www.cadtm.org/Belgium-s-colonial-crimes-in-the-Congo-A-duty-to-remember

This policy eventually triggered an enormous international campaign against the
crimes perpetrated by the regime of Leopold II. Black pastors in the United
States were protesting against this situation, then were joined by British
activist E.D. Morel. Morel worked for a British company in Liverpool, and was
regularly called on to travel to Antwerp. He observed that while Leopold II
claimed that Belgium was undertaking commercial exchanges with the Congo Free
State, ships were returning from the Congo with cargoes of elephant tusks and
thousands of kilos of rubber, and the return cargoes were mainly arms and
foodstuffs for the colonial forces. Morel considered this to be a very strange
kind of trade, a strange kind of exchange. At the time, those Belgians
supporting Leopold II never acknowledged this truth. They declared that Morel
represented the interests of British imperialism and only criticized the
Belgians in order to take their place. Paul Janson, a member of parliament who
gave his name to the main auditorium of the Free University of Brussels,
declared, I shall never criticize the actions of Leopold, because those who
criticize him, especially the British, do so only in the spirit of ‘move over
and make room for us’.

However, criticism grew, with books such as Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness,
and The Crime of the Congo, a too-little known work by Arthur Conan Doyle, the
creator of Sherlock Holmes. An international campaign against the exploitation
of the Congo generated demonstrations in the United States and also in Great
Britain, finally producing results. Leopold found himself obliged to set up an
international commission of enquiry in 1904, which met on the spot, in the
Congo, to take evidence. The testimonies received there are overwhelming. They
are available in manuscript form in the Belgian state archives.

translated by a computer program.
ken h

 Comrades all!

I am Carmen Blanco Valer, Hugo's eldest daughter and I make use of the list of
subscribers of Lucha Indígena and contact them for the following:

Following the Peruvian alternative means Wayka proyectase by the networks last
week the documentary "Hugo Blanco G, - River Deep"
https://www.hugoblancofilm.com/ have emerged
virulent reactions from right - wing groups against my father and against the
filmmaker Malena Martinez.

Both the Fujimorista Marta Chavez, like ex-military groups, civil guards,
etc., have been publishing press releases in which they accuse Hugo of serious
crimes against Human Rights and are outraged by the support given by the
Ministry of Culture to the screening of the film.

Faced with these serious accusations, a group of comrades took the initiative
to vindicate Hugo and his struggles and drafted a text to which he would ask
them to adhere in solidarity. Once we can gather a significant number of
signatures, it will be published in Peru.

 Sincerely:

 Carmen Blanco Valer

 carmincha.blancova...@gmail.com

Here is the text and below the link you can make the accessions.

 In demand of Hugo Blanco

Concerning the exhibition of the award-winning documentary “Hubo Blanco Río
Profundo”, a group of former military officers colluded with a series of former
right-wing politicians, together with journalists from virtual publications
with titles like El Montonero, have issued some pronouncements naming the
former member of the 1978 Constituent Assembly, deputy and senator,
democratically elected by the sovereign people, Hugo Blanco Galdós, as a
terrorist and murderer.

We, the undersigned, citizens of Latin America and beyond, repudiate those
words that, fifty years after the events that raised the impoverished peasants
in the Valley of the Convention, seek to criminalize and discredit the
politician and activist for the rights of the nature. Today, at 85 years old,
Hugo Blanco Galdós, is considered one of the most important internationalist
leaders for the struggles of agrarian reform, and against extractivism that
pierces the bowels of our territories.

Hugo is an example for his tireless commitment to justice and to the people,
whether in Pucallpa, Cajamarca, La Convencion, Chiapas or Cauca. Also because
he is one of the few leftist leaders who today has been able to take a
significant turn towards another fight for protest: for the environment. Blanco
summarizes it relentlessly: "Before, it was fighting for socialism, today it is
about the fight for the survival of the species."

This life dedicated to the fight for justice, democracy and the defense of
Mother Earth has been masterfully represented by Malena Martínez in "Hugo
Blanco: Rio Profundo", which has caused the unacceptable reaction of these
emblematic characters of the Right caveman, who consolidate in their ranks the
harshest of Peruvian authoritarianism, and who fear the example of this son of
the hills of Cusco, where even today the cry "land or death: we will win"
resounds.

From the Toronto Palestine Film Festival

We are absolutely devastated by the news of Sarah Hegazi's death. We extend our
love and support to her loved ones, siblings, friends and community.

Sarah Hegazi was in her own words super communist, super gay and feminist. She
was an Egyptian activist and writer who led several campaigns to combat
discrimination against LGBTQ people in Egypt and had participated in several
solidarity campaigns with prisoners of conscience. Sarah was forced to exile in
Canada after her imprisonment and torture by Egypt for raising the Pride Flag
at Mashrou Leila's 2017 concert in Cairo - a watershed moment for LGBTQ Arabs
across the region. For Sarah, prison left her with significant trauma.

While in exile, Sarah co-ran the platform ⁨برة السور,⁩

spoke publicly at an event by Sudanese women's rights organization Kandaka in
White, completed academic courses and published some of her work at where you
can read her article "The Egyptian Revolution: Nine Years Later
"

Rest in power Sarah Hegazi.

TPFF is committed to making our spaces safe for our LGBTQ2S community members
and their stories and art. Like racism, homophobia and transphobia are deadly
and harmful - we must confront hate and discrimination within our communities
and stand with our queer sisters and brothers.

There is more than one defect in the translation.
ken h

http://www.internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?article6599

Political time, accordingly, does not march in linear fashion towards progress,
rather, it is broken time, marked by crisis and interruptions of normality,
opening possibilities for those who are prepared and know how to approach it.
French revolutionary socialist Daniel Bensaïd spoke of empty, homogenous time
and dense time, which is to say that there are periods when nothing happens and
periods when, all of a sudden, time accelerates and many things happen all at
once. [2 ]
Revolutionary politics implies the mastery of this kind of political time, of
knowing how to react in the face of rapidly changing events. To prepare, as
Trotsky put it, for the “forcible entrance of the masses into the realm of
rulership over their own destiny.”

* * * * * * * *

A party committed to political action across the whole society. The party must
not remain passive in the face of injustices, however small they may seem, it
must participte in all local and sectoral battles, not merely shutting itself
up on the margins of concrete conflicts. And this is true in all areas of work,
be it the economic/union struggle or work in elected or other institutions.

https://www.amazon.ca/Comrade-Heart-Life-Randall-Swingler/dp/0719063345

It was in this book that the author quoted Swingler on Virginia Woolf.
Randall Swingler writing in Our Time, February, 1941 noting the suicide of
Virginia Woolf, had this to say, "Virginia Woolf, the outstanding prose writer
of the English Twilight of individual subconsciousness, has accepted the
judgement of history and taken the logical step.”

The International Bolshevik Tendency has on their website an Introduction to
Marxist Economics http://bolshevik.org/
I am not qualified to judge it from the point of view of theory, but I am happy
to say that there is a spark of creativity in some of their material, in their
use of graphics.
It’s not that long ago that I said to myself that the IBT gave new meaning to
the word “moribund.” I can no longer say that.

Abbotsford was a sleepy small town when I grew up about 20 miles away. Today

-- Forwarded message -
From: Wafa Mustafa with The Syria Campaign mailto:i...@thesyriacampaign.org>>
Date: Fri, Jun 5, 2020, 6:21 AM

Holding a picture of my dad outside a German courthouse

My name is Wafa Mustafa and in July 2013 my father Ali was taken by the Syrian
regime for protesting against the injustice and oppression he saw in our
country. I haven’t seen or heard from him since.

Today is a big day as I am once again outside the courthouse in the German town
of Koblenz to witness the world’s first trial of Syrian state torture. Two
members of Assad’s regime are on trial for murdering and torturing thousands of
detainees and it's the first week that survivors are finally speaking out
against their oppressors in court.

It’s a crucial first step towards accountability in Syria, that might
eventually expose a chain of command that goes all the way up to Assad. But at
the same time, people are still suffering in inhumane cells to this day. We
must not wait until they are killed by COVID or tortured to death to start
seeking justice.

I am a member of Families for Freedom, a women-led movement of Syrians like me
searching for our family members amongst the 130,000 people who have been
detained and tortured by the Syrian regime, ISIS, and other armed groups.
Together we are pushing the international community to do more to free all
detainees and missing persons and to hold those responsible to account.

So many families wanted to be here with me today but couldn’t travel due to
coronavirus restrictions. Instead, I’ve come alone with photos of their
fathers, sisters, brothers and daughters in the hope that our calls for freedom
will be heard. These photos of our loved ones, snatched from us and missing
from every birthday meal and family moment, are the closest we can get to
representing them here at the trial.

My father is a human rights defender and I have learnt from him and I will
never stop demanding freedom for those detained. I will continue to campaign
until my dad is standing by my side and able to speak up for justice using his
own voice.

Can you add your strength to our movement by sharing a photo of today's
demonstration on your Facebook to spread the word about these important trials?

Or if you haven't already, could you sign Families for Freedom's petition
demanding the release of Syria's detainees
?

In his article In Defence of Antifa Ron Jacobs makes the point, "The
unfortunate (for some) truth is that sometimes, you gotta’ fight fascists if
you want to fight fascsim. Vigils don’t make them go away.”
I have to agree. The question is, how best to do that. So I don’t want to
compare Antifa’s efforts with vigils. I think it is more fruitful to compare
their efforts with other anti-fascist mobilizations.
I think the best anti-fascist mobilizations leave behind a mobilized and
self-confident mass of people. The organizing efforts are very public. I have
three cases I want to mention.

50,000 Anti-Nazis Answer SWP Call

Minneapolis response to Silver Shirts, 1938
https://isreview.org/issue/85/it-cant-happen-here

“This [the Silver Shirt threat] situation called for prompt countermeasures,”
wrote Farrell Dobbs thirty-five years later. “So Local 544, acting with its
customary decisiveness, answered the threat by organizing a union defense guard
during August 1938.”60 The SWP wanted the union defense to be a broad formation.

Conceptually, the guard was not envisaged as the narrow formation of a single
union. It was viewed rather as the nucleus around which to build the broadest
possible united defense movement. It was expected that time and events could
also make it possible to extend the united front to include the unemployed,
minority peoples, youth—all potential victims of the fascists, vigilantes, or
other reactionaries.61

Vancouver, BC 1993
I was among a large number of people who organized in response to a planned
visit by Tom Metzger, an American fascist. We organized a rally of thousands.
The fascists were obliged to keep their meeting place secret, but we found them
after all and they took off. As a footnote, one of the central organizers of
that fascist effort has since repented and become an an anti-racist.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/04/life-after-hate-groups-neo-fascism-racism

Alan Dutton, the director of the Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research
Society , also lives in Vancouver. Back in 1993, he
had McAleer in his sights.

When he and other organisers heard about the plans to bring Metzger over, “We
organized a demonstration and brought about 3,000 people into downtown
Vancouver. Around the same time we also organized demonstrations against a band
he managed called Odin’s Law.”

May I make a comment from a distance? If I was given a choice between the
previous period of relative inactivity and the current upsurge of struggle, I
would take the current upsurge, with whatever shortcomings it has. I think
some of the shortcomings may be inevitable until a leadership gels. And this
leadership is struggling to emerge from the smothering influence of the
Democratic Party. Within the current upsurge I would support those who are
trying to promote self-organization and a perspective of ongoing struggle.

Dreams Deferred: Book Review of “Red International and Black Caribbean”

Margaret Stevens is one of the few writers to examine the fascinating
revolutionary history of the Caribbean and Mexico as a partisan of revolution.
Her book is a detailed look at the struggles and betrayals between the two
World Wars at the hands of U.S. and British racism and imperialism. Stevens
deserves praise for her pioneering work, which is surely a revelation to many
North Americans, ignorant of past struggles in the Caribbean.

The evidence cited is anecdotal and I’m not sure what a more “scientific” study
would reveal about leftists and organizing campaigns.

But I can agree that is is easy to misjudge who will play a role in union
organizing. One more than one occasion I have been a member of a union local
and heard reports from them after I had moved on. In three of these cases
someone who I had dismissed as useless ended up taking the leadership of the

In The Economist, dated April 4, there is an article entitled Mercy and Money.
It’s behind a paywall.

A few points from the article.
In the last 18 months 9,000 (doctors) have left Brazil, Bolivia, El Salvador,
and Ecuador, due to the advent of right-wing governments.
Portugal, which has received Cuban doctora since 2009, pays 50,000 euros (US
$55,000) a year for each one.

With the article is a chart with startling (to me) information. The median age
in Haiti is 24 and in Angola 16.7.

David Duport asks
Cuba still charges host countries for these medical missions, right?

I can’t say that I know all the facts. It would make sense if some countries
did pay. The item below suggests otherwise.
ken h

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_medical_internationalism

Cuban medical internationalism
Missions abroad are intended to provide services at low cost to the host
country. "Patients are not charged for services, and the recipient countries
are expected to cover only the cost of collective housing, air fare, and
limited food and supplies not exceeding $200 a month. While Cuban doctors are
abroad, they continue to receive their salaries as well as a stipend in foreign
currency."[2]

In 2008, the pay for Cuban doctors abroad was $183 per month, whereas the pay
for doctors working domestically was $23 per month.[20]

A new term - "disaster tourism" - has arisen in response to a growing number
of large-scale natural disasters. This phrase refers to individuals,
governments and organizations who travel to a disaster area with the primary
goal of having an "experience" rather than providing meaningful aid. Such aid
is often short-lived, and may even get in the way of more serious rescue
efforts. Cuban medical internationalism represents a polar opposite to this
disaster tourism mentality, with a focus on large-scale, sustained aid
targeting the most marginalized and under-served populations across the globe

Russians know what the absence of stability can mean. COVID-19 is just the
latest reminder

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-russians-know-what-the-absence-of-stability-can-mean-covid-19-is-just/

André Forget
In the provincial Russian city of Yoshkar-Ola, where I live, the coronavirus
was first greeted as something of a joke. Even after school and university
classes were moved online, and trucks with loudspeakers began driving around
the city telling people to stay inside, the average citizen in our part of the
Mari El Republic found it hard to take the situation seriously. Through an odd
coincidence, the voice on the loudspeakers sounded eerily similar in tone to
the one in the infamous news bulletins announcing the Nazi invasion of 1941 –
an irony my adult students laughed about in class. The virus still seemed far
away, and its presence in the distant capitals was hardly the kind of decisive
catastrophe the Second World War had been. The quarantine orders were not
strongly enforced initially. Most people ignored them.

For the most part, this does not conform to my experience in Canada, in the
League for Socialist Action (beginning for me in 1967) and later the
Revolutionary Workers League.
I can think of rare instances when we were discouraged from buying the paper of
another group or attending the public meeting of another group. But these were
exceptions.

A few summers ago I was chatting with a comrade who was in the LSA with me.
After a glass of wine she confessed to me that in the branch meetings decades
ago, whenever I stood up and remarked on what another small left group was
saying or doing, she would roll her eyes. But that was it. No one approached
me to ask me not to make these remarks.

This paper shows up in my local library. I thought the best course was to
refrain from asking them to remove it.
Better to put forward our own publications and get them into the library. As a
matter of fact a leftist publication, Fire This Time, is also available in my
local library. I don’t think it is very good, but it does offer a challenge to
The Epoch Times.
I had no idea that the Shen Yun dance troupe was connected to The Epoch Times.
They had a massive advertising campaign that reached into my small community on
Vancouver Island. Tickets started at somewhere close to $125.00. I wouldn't
be surprised to find that for every $100.00 in ticket sales, they spent $15-$20
in advertising.

According to official data, in 2019, Cuban health personnel abroad exceeded
28,000 in 60 countries.

To date, Cuba has sent 21 brigades of health professionals to join national and
local efforts in 20 countries that have recently requested Cuban medical
assistance to combat coronavirus. These 21 brigades are in addition to or
reinforce the medical collaboration brigades in 60 nations, where they were
already providing services.

Over the past 50 years, Cuban medical personnel have carried out missions in
164 countries in Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia.

Cuban health personnel have accumulated a great deal of experience in the fight
against the dengue fever that periodically shakes the island, as well as the
Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, Guinea Conakry and Liberia (2014-2015) and the
cholera epidemic in Haiti. It has also intervened effectively to help the
victims of several earthquakes in this Caribbean country as well as in Pakistan
(2005) and Nepal (2015); against floods and hurricanes in Central America and
the Caribbean. The World Health Organization has recognized the importance and
quality of Cuban medical aid at the international level.

The crisis that COVID-19 has provoked globally presents a crossroads to the
peoples of Abya Yala - Latin America. The popular organizations are the first
line of resistance against the worst expressions of the decomposing system.

We are going through a complete crisis that threatens life in all its forms.
The COVID-19 has become a pandemic at a time when the capitalist crisis is
intensifying and economic forces repeatedly try to make the working class bear
the onus of restoring the corporate profit rate. This
coincides with the weakening of health systems, the deterioration of living
conditions and the destruction of the public sector as a result of the
neoliberal shift. Asphyxiated by foreign debt, international organisations and
the permanent oppression of imperialism against our sovereignty, we are heading
for a scenario with very serious consequences.

It is a feature of small group life that members who may not be confident of

The COVD-19 pandemic and the attendant economic crisis raise big-picture
questions of great importance to socialists. Disasters, natural, human-made or
a combination of both, such as wars, famines, economic depressions and
epidemics, often trigger great political and social crises affecting all areas
of life. This brief article offers reflections on the ways that crises have
raised the question of the relationship between self-organization and socialism.

Sudden crises lay bare the great contradictions of class society and create
both the necessity and the opportunity for the self-organization of daily life.
More rarely, they lay the groundwork for revolutionary situations in which the
question of Who rules society? is posed.

First, as I recall you made the point that the mass testing in South Korea was
effective in combatting the coronavirus.
You advocate mass testing as opposed to social distancing.
The point has been made elsewhere that South Korea has a single payer system,
which is much more effective in dealing with this crisis than the US system.
The US system is not going to change in the short term.
Also, one of the obstacles to mass testing in the US has been the fact that
they have very few test kits.
This is not going to change within days, or even within 2 weeks.

Secondly, are you suggesting that the virus will pass through the population at
the same rate whether or not we stay in our homes or go out and mix with other
people?

Group update, call out for help, and reminder of group guidelines:
WOW! On behalf of the organizing team, we are blown away by the level of
response to this group. We came together spontaneously yesterday after seeing
the need to create a platform such as this, launched at 1am with no promo other
than adding friends, and it has been snowballing ever since. YOU, the people of
Vancouver and the surrounding area, have been keeping our hearts bursting ever
since!
A couple of things the Admin team wanted to highlight:
1. We are accessible to folks who don't have Facebook! We encourage people to
post on behalf on others, and also offer ourselves to post for Seniors and
others who don't have Facebook. Please get the word out to just email us at
We recognize that this is still not accessible to people who don't have regular
internet access, and are expanding our capacity to do more safe outreach.

2. Please be sure to read our community care guidelines and follow the best
practices we have outlined to keep yourselves and others safe (not disclosing
personal information, how to safely deliver groceries or walk dogs). WE ARE NOT
MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AND AS SUCH GOING FORWARD WE WILL BE DELETING ANY MEDICAL
POSTS. That is not what the group was designed for and is beyond our scope of
practice.

3. Your commitment to each other and to community has been incredible and we
are scrambling to keep up. We are putting a call out to folks who are
interested in joining us to support the evolving needs and smooth running of
this group. Specifically, right now we need the following expertise (although
we welcome everyone who wants to be involved!):

Anyone with experience helping to categorize / structure requests so that they
are easily able to be found and matched. If there is the potential to integrate
a mapping function so people can easily connect with folks in their
neighbourhood, so much the better! The posts are flooding in fast and furious!
If you speak multiple languages, we would love your translation help so that
our documents are accessible in multiple languages.
If you have experience in philanthropy, development, and fundraising we would
love to hear from you. We want to start focusing on resource generation
(perhaps a go fund me?) so that we can support folks who are in precarious
situations and struggling to make ends meet right now.
We also want to tie this to larger social movements and increase pressure on
institutions to step up and provide widespread and long-lasting change. Please
get in touch if you are involved in or would like to be involved in developing
some of this advocacy work!
If you have anti-oppression training and are interested in taking shifts
moderating to ensure that this is a welcoming space, please reach out.
If you have expertise in public health, epidemiology, infectious disease etc,
we are compiling a document with centralized links and advice so that we can
limit misinformation and direct folks to reputable sources.
Finally, anyone with legal expertise to make sure that this platform continues
to serve the community in a safe and responsible manner!
If you would like to join our efforts, please fill out this form and we will
get back to you as soon as we can https://forms.gle/bbubk9cHSN1AYtzr7
.

WHAT WE DO
Welcome to COVID-19 Coming Together - Vancouver!

Note that we are a group of community members who have come together on short
notice to organize this platform. We anticipate that, as the pandemic shifts,
this group will shift and grow as needed. We are working hard to increase
accessibility and to provide translations. We welcome any suggestions and/or
offers of help through the following link. Thank you for your patience and
understanding as we work to flesh this out

I had occasion recently to see good examples of how activism can stay with you
into old age.
One was the passing of someone I had met years go, Judith Kolokoff.
https://bartonfuneral.com/2020/01/01/19392/

According to someone who knew her better, when she arrived in her retirement
home, she began collecting the memories of those around her, with the hope of
writing a play based on this.

And last month I was singing (as part of a group) in a nearby retirement home.
As I entered I recognized a man I hadn’t seen for a while. I had seen him
previously at Cuba events and Communist party events. He was wearing two
buttons, one of them a large picture of Che Guevara. As we sang I noticed him
struggling to his feet. He turned to the woman next to him and helped her up.
She had an even tougher time getting to her feet.
I assumed they were leaving. They were not. They started to dance, the first
time this has ever happened to us.
Happily, I was able to pass this along to a young person in the Young Communist
league, who intends to visit him.

We can all think of negatives that come with political engagement. Evidently,
there are positives that can stay with you into old age.

This is a local, free publication, rather eclectic. They print 7,500 copies.
I don’t know how many are picked up and read.

While I admit the accuracy of some of these characterizations, I would qualify
them as well.
When I joined the Young Socialists I did so with a sense of urgency about what
was happening in the world, the Vietnam war being important in this regard.
I had been drawn to the New Left, but my contact with them did not offer me an
activist group that I could join.

I think that something that contributed to our fierce attachment to our ideas
was our sense of isolation. We were a small group in a broader society that
was either hostile or (more often) indifferent.
“Educationals" were sometimes simply a rehearsal of our ideas without much
reflection, but sometimes much more stimulating.
Educationals, as we called them, were a 20 or 30 minute presentation of some
aspect of our ideas, including discussion from the floor.

Quoting from a longer piece I wrote elsewhere.
“... I overcame my hesitation and joined the Young Socialists in January of
1967. Another factor made my joining somewhat hesitant. I feared that the
organization would put an intellectual straitjacket on me. This was a
reasonable fear in that some left organizations do promote intellectual
conformity. But his was not what I found in the Young Socialists. I found the
intellectual life quite engaging. And I'm not the first person to find that a
study of Marxism opened up a whole new world.
Just one example. About 1968 the International Socialist Review published an
article by Rosa Luxembourg on Russian poetry, Luxembourg on Korelenko. If you
can find this piece, I'm happy to recommend it."

I was innocently watching the video record of a memorial gathering for someone
I knew and as I looked on the right hand side of may screen I saw videos about
surviving in the woods and on the run.
How did these crop up? I had to think back. I do follow some sites that I
regard as bordering on conspiracist. And recently, researching the
Wet’suwet’en struggle, I found myself on a website quite hostile to their
struggle.
That might account for it.

The videos themselves were quite interesting. The one below was one of two by
someone who calls himself The Gray Bearded Green Beret. Here is someone who

the world, but he sees himself as potentially some kind of rebel. His T-shirt

Cuba produces one of the most potent medicines for the treatment of
immunological diseases.

The Recombinant Interferon Alpha 2B (IFNrec), an antiviral produced by the
Cuban biotech industry, is being used by Chinese doctors to treat patients
infected by the 2019-nCoV coronavirus, which has affected more than 28,000
people and has killed 564 patients worldwide.

Since Jan. 25, the ChangHeber Company located in Changchun city has been
producing the famous Cuban antiviral, which is one of 30 medicines chosen by
the National Health Commission for its potential to cure respiratory diseases.

Some of you will know that I have strong connections with the Gitxsan and
Wet’suwet’en Nations that go back to the No` Xya` (Our Footprints)

production in 1987-90. The Delgamuuxw Court Case

(1997) gave the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en jurisdiction over many things,
including development in their 58,000 sq. kilometers of ancestral lands in the
NW of British Columbia.

Although the details of Delgamuuxw are currently being disputed in some
sectors, it is clear to me that the Hereditary Chiefs have jurisdiction over
their Territory. With all due respect, the elected, Federal Department of
Indian Affairs Band Council Chiefs (an imposition of the Colonial Government)
have jurisdiction on Reserves only. I support the Hereditary Chiefs in their
insistence on the validity of the supreme court decision and therefore the
validity of Wet’suwet’en law alongside Canadian law. Let’s understand this is
only ‘necessary’ inside the imposition of colonialism.

The Wet’suwet’en have recently exercised their legal rights as a Nation inside
Canada and have therefore been under attack by the Governments of Canada and
British Columbia, for their refusal to allow Coastal GasLink/TC Energy to push
through a 670-kilometer fracked gas pipeline that would carry fracked gas
through Wet’suwet’en Territory. The Chiefs suggested an alternate route which
was refused by the energy company for financial reasons. This has mostly been
ignored by the media. Wet’suwet’en blockades went up to protect their
territory. The Government’s reaction was to use the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police (RCMP) as a heavily armed (including snipers and helicopters) occupying
force, removing the legal and peaceful blockades. As a reaction to this,
solidarity demonstrations and blockades have sprung up across Canada and around
the world, in support of the Wet’suwet’en. This has really disrupted rail and
other services, having a huge effect on the economy.

While some believe this is about the pipeline, it seems clear to me that at
core it is about respecting territorial jurisdiction and making Reconciliation
a reality and not just lip service. For instance, Truedau campaigned on
Reconciliation being real – meaning things like access to drinkable water (that
has been poisoned by logging, mining, fossil fuel extraction, etc.), access to
education, to health care, and numerous other things most Canadians take for
granted. These promises have to date not been acted upon in meaningful ways.

Yesterday (Feb. 20) the RCMP offered to respect one of the Hereditary Chiefs’
requests and withdraw from the blockade area – something the Chiefs have
insisted on before agreeing to speak to Canadian Government officials, having
said they will not engage in dialogue with guns aimed at them. However, it is
essential to understand, as a Representative for the Chiefs has said, this does
not solve everything. It is the beginning of a possible solution. Prime
Minister Trudeau has refused to meet personally with the Chiefs, a sign of
disrespect, if we acknowledge these are, in fact, Nation to Nation
conversations.

Today (Feb. 20) Trudeau addressed the media (and therefore the nation and the
Hereditary Chiefs and other Indigenous Leaders) and, while saying the
Government was committed to dialogue and Reconciliation, that he expected the
RCMP withdrawal would mean the blockades would come down and if they don’t,
they will need to be removed. I believe he was particularly referring to the
Mohawk blockade of a train line that is stopping train movement that is
critical to the Canadian economy. He insisted that the responsibility is now
sitting with Indigenous Leaders and that ‘dialogue cannot be one-sided’. I know
for a fact that attempts at dialogue have been one-sided through-out Canadian
history and it is not Indigenous Leaders (for the most part) who have not been
willing.

We are at a historical turning point in Canada. I have just read that
Wet'suwet'en and Mohawk Leadership have issued a joint statement that the
barricades will come down when the RCMP and Coastal GasLink/TC Energy leave
Wet'suwet'en Territory and all gas line activities cease. Having been ignored
and disrespected for too long, this is an understandable next step. Full
information here:

To: Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
Hon. John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia
Hon. David Eby, Attorney-General of British Columbia
Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous Relations
Hon. Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations
and Reconciliation
   Office of the Wet'suwet'en
   Unist'ot'en Camp
   Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs
S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, RCMP E Division

Health Professionals’ Open Letter On Wet’suwet’en

We are alarmed and concerned by events unfolding in northern British Columbia.
Once again we have watched as RCMP officers armed with automatic weapons and
equipped with dogs, drones, helicopters, and sound cannon and with the
overwatch of RCMP snipers dismantled three peaceful Wet’suwet’en checkpoints.

These blockades arose from the incursion of a fracking natural gas pipeline
backed by Dutch, Chinese, Korean, Malaysian and Japanese multinationals into
traditional Wet’suwet’en territories, without permission from the Wet’suwet’en
leadership and over their strenuous objection.

The health risks from fracking are well known, including release of
carcinogenic toxins such as benzene. Pregnant women in northeastern BC have
serum benzene levels three times the normal level (1) and studies have shown
this has an association with increased childhood leukemia rates (2). U.S.
studies have shown increases in congenital heart disease, chronic pulmonary
disorders and small birthweight babies in populations living in proximity to
fracking operations. And as we all know, every pipeline leaks.

In addition, the CGL pipeline would feed the massive LNG project in Kitimat.
The whole project is geared to shipping huge volumes of LNG to Asian markets
and increasing fossil fuel emissions worldwide at a time when the looming
devastation of climate change is literally setting countries on fire.
Australia is burning, Antarctic temperatures just passed 20 degrees Celsius.
The health risks presented by climate change should terrify everyone.

The American Journal of Public Health has pointed out that indigenous groups
are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change – “warming temperatures
have the potential to affect infectious diseases associated with the
preparation of traditional foods (e.g. gastroenteritis, food-borne botulism),
zoonotic diseases (e.g giardiasis) and traditional plants or remedies.” In
addition, “high-intensity rainfall events could be particularly problematic,
with waterborne disease outbreaks (e.g. typhoid, bacillary dysentery,
Escherichia coli and cryptosporidiosis)”, not to mention the direct and
indirect effects of wildfire outbreaks we have already seen in BC. (3)

Article 26.2, of the UN Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous People states
that “Indigenous peoples have the right to own, use, develop and control the
lands, territories and resources that they possess by reason of traditional
ownership or other traditional occupation or use, as well as those which they
have otherwise acquired.” This right has been enshrined in law by B.C.‘s Bill
41, as has the right of indigenous peoples not to be removed from their lands.
But if the words of the provincial government uphold these rights, their
actions do the complete opposite.
Despite the fact that the Wet’suwet’en have an established legal and moral
right to govern their own territories, this inconvenient fact is being ignored
by the provincial government the RCMP and even the courts. Once again unceded
indigenous lands are being annexed by force and at the point of a gun. And
this in turn has led to the polarization and division that has erupted across
Canada.

For these reasons, we, the undersigned health care professionals, join our
voices with Amnesty International to call for a halt to further work on the CGL
pipeline until the free prior informed consent of the Wet’suwet’en people has
been obtained and support the call of the UN Committee for the Elimination of
Racial Discrimination for the RCMP to withdraw.
We also call on Premier John Horgan to place a moratorium on CGL construction
permits and to return to the table with the Wet’suwet’en people.

What is your assessment of the actions demanding No War On Iran!?
The report on New York said the demonstration was in the hundreds. Not much,
but perhaps explained by the fact that the immediate threat of war has receded.

The extensive coverage of the coronavirus crisis has given me an exposure to
China as it is today. I have to say it has updated my perceptions of China.
Based on the coverage I have to see China as a more “modern" country than I had
thought, with gleaming health care facilities and up to date equipment.
And I expect many were impressed by the announcement of a 1,000 bed hospital to
be built in six days.

I am left with a question that others may be able to help me with. Is there
something wrong with agriculture in China that allows these outbreaks? How
common is this elsewhere?

The turnaround from complacency to nationwide mobilization typifies how China
can respond to unexpected crisis

like a lumbering giant, reluctant to stir, but then capable of shattering
urgency. It represents both sides of the authoritarian political bargain under

The aesthetic of the video, the tone of the speech and the background music –
Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin” – was all reminiscent of Nazi propaganda.

Alvim later explained that the similarities were all a coincidence and that he

Had he known, he would not have said it, Alvim added on Facebook.

The video had been intended to publicize a new art prize created by President

“Fake Intelligence”? Washington Blames Iran for Ukraine Airliner Crash. Was the
Plane Brought down by a Missile?
Stephen Lendman

https://www.globalresearch.ca/blaming-iran-ukraine-airliner-crash/5700207

A Reuters report was similar, saying the Ukraine aircraft “was likely brought
down by an Iranian missile,” citing Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and
“intelligence from Canadian and other (unnamed) sources.”

Iranian officials debunked false claims about a missile or rocket downing the
Ukraine airliner.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization head Ali Abedzadeh said the following:

“From a scientific viewpoint, it is impossible that a missile hit the Ukrainian
plane,” adding:

“The plane caught fire three minutes into the flight, according to what the
witnesses have reported and the data collected from the parts of the airplane.”

“The pilot tried to return the airplane at the altitude of 8,000 feet, but due
to the fire, the airplane crashed and exploded.”

“We can say that the airplane, considering the kind of the crash and the
pilot’s efforts to return it to Imam Khomeini airport, didn’t explode in the
air. So, the allegation that it was hit by missiles is totally ruled out.”

“(B)ecause the airplane was Ukrainian, Ukraine is obliged to cooperate with us,
and has started cooperation. Their team of experts has arrived in Tehran, and
we have coordinated the issue with them on different aspects.”

“Iranian experts and the Ukrainian ones have had a meeting so that we could
determine the cause of the incident in cooperation with the Ukrainian side.”

An official investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi dismissed false
accusations about an IRGC missile downing the Ukraine airliner.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has begun investigation into the cause of this
plane crash in accordance with the international standards and the ICAO’s
(International Civil Aviation Organization’s) criteria, and has invited
Ukraine, as the owner of the plane, and the Boeing company, as the plane
manufacturer, to take part in the investigation,” he explained, adding:

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the presence of experts from the
countries whose nationals have been killed in the tragic incident, and requests
the Canadian prime minister and any other government with information about
this issue to give the information to the committee investigating the incident
in Iran.”

Ukraine Airlines Flight 752 crashed hours after Iranian missiles struck two US
bases in Iraq.

They were launched in retaliation for the Trump regime’s assassination of IRGC
Quds Force commander General Qassem Soleimani — an act of war by the US against
Iran.

Both incidents were unrelated, no credible evidence suggesting otherwise.

On Thursday, IRGC spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi debunked false accusations,
saying:

Western sources “are spreading propaganda that the Ukrainian flight was
targeted. This is ridiculous,” adding:

“Most of the passengers on this flight were our valued young Iranian men and
women.

“Whatever we do, we do it for the protection and defense of our country and our
people.”

If the airliner was struck by a missile, it likely would have broken apart in
flight which no evidence suggests happened.

Separately, Ukrainian authorities ruled out terrorism, suggesting likely engine
failure, what an analysis of the crash site and black boxes aboard the doomed
aircraft will likely determine.

Falsely claiming an Iranian missile may have brought down Ukraine Airlines
Flight 752 is similar to wrongfully accusing Russia for downing Malaysian
Airlines MH17 on July 17, 2014 in eastern Ukraine airspace.

The latter Big Lie persists despite no credible evidence proving it, plenty of
evidence debunking it.

Investigations of commercial airline crashes take considerable time to complete.

It’ll likely be months before it’s officially known why Ukraine Airlines Flight
752 went down.

There were no credible reports of satellite images showing one or more missiles
in Iranian airspace before the Ukraine airliner crashed.

When the cause is determined and publicly announced, it’ll no doubt cite a
technical malfunction, not an Iranian missile responsible for what happened.

Abedzadeh, saying the following:

Footage of a Washington, DC demonstration that I saw earlier on CNN has shown

I have not seen any calls for demonstrations in Canada. Some Iranians here
have publicly supported the killing of Soleimani, but others are urging

This country’s best hope lies in working with European and Asian allies,
including Japan, to forge a coherent response that provokes neither the
Americans nor the Iranians. But that may prove impossible.

To make things even more complicated, we will all need to figure out how much
U.S. actions against Iran are based on calculated national interest, and how
much they are the whim of an erratic and uninformed President who is trying to
change the impeachment channel.

“Many Chinese young people hate political correctness, such as the idea of

I am relying on my memory here, but according to an account I read Rimbaud was
in Paris at the time of the Commune. He was 17 and would have been affected by
it in some way.
Interesting to contrast that with later joining the Dutch Colonial Army
(granted he deserted within months) and some years after that running guns into
North-East Africa.

Below is a note that I sent to another list re this item.

Some evangelicals are now denouncing Trump. It is hard to say what percentage
of evangelicals they represent.
I think a couple of things are at work. Some evangelicals, like many
Republicans, have decided that Trump is the wave of the future and if they want
to be involved, they’d better support him. But there are others who are
looking ahead and seeing a day of reckoning. They anticipate a time when any
association with Trump will discredit them. As the author says, " If we don’t
reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and
righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come?”
Paul Ryan, formerly the Speaker of the House, is a good example of someone who
has decided that he’s better take his distance from Trump if he wants a
political future.

Another factor is the presence of the evangelical churches in other countries.
They often have missionaries in poorer countries. Imagine being an evangelical
active in Honduras or El Salvador and having to admit that some evangelicals
back home support Trump.

...will the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa succeed in moving the
region in a progressive and revolutionary direction, or will authoritarian
regimes simply change face, survive and engage in endless wars?
Which scenario will prevail? Much depends on what progressives around the world
do at this critical moment to express their solidarity with these revolts. The
current international mobilizations especially of environmental activists and
feminists against capitalist exploitation and oppression of humanity and nature
are promising. Our destinies are linked.

Tonight I had occasion to pick up a copy of The Spark, Marxist Theory and
Discussion, a publication of the Communist Party of Canada.
It carries a review of Lysenko’s Ghost: Epigenetics and Russia. The reviewer
claims that advances in science have vindicated Lysenko.

“…the author accidentally but fatally exposes West capitalist bioscience to be
severely flawed. With its dogmatic rejection of the possibility of other
methods of inheritance it was Western bioscience that was shown to be less
open, narrow, non-dialectical, philosophically frozen and inferior in
comparison to an imperfect but superior Soviet dialectical science.”

Can someone who knows more about this than I do please comment.

Leaders of left groups must consider how their supporters will react to a
defeat such as this. It is possible that some will become inactive, not seeing
any point to their activity.
Leaders must rally as many as they can to carry on the struggle. Granted, this
should not be done by way of false consolations.

In the end, Seymour comes to a conclusion I can support. There is a basis for

These two statements, a week apart, indicate that there was a strong push back
to the first statement.

https://www.greenparty.ca/en/statement/2019-11-11/green-party-statement-bolivia

Green Party Statement on Bolivia

November 11, 2019
The Green Party of Canada has been closely following events in Bolivia related
to the October 20, 2019 presidential elections. A post-election audit conducted
by the Organisation of American States (OAS) Electoral Observer Mission
concluded that those elections were marred by serious irregularities and that
the results should be annulled. Evo Morales has announced his resignation as
President of Bolivia.

The Green Party of Canada welcomes the call for new elections, which should
take place as soon as possible. Those elections must take place under the
supervision of a renewed Bolivian electoral authority in order to ensure that
they reflect the will of Bolivians, and to strengthen confidence in the
Bolivian electoral system.

The pre and post-election period has been marked by violence and there have
been reports of targeted attacks against demonstrators. The Green Party calls
upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint as the country prepares for
fresh elections and to work to de-escalate the situation. “We remind Bolivian
authorities of their responsibility to protect the people as they exercise
their right to peaceful expression,” said Annamie Paul, International Affairs
Critic for the Green Party. “During this transitional period, it is critical
that all actors work together to avoid further violent confrontation and make
meaningful efforts to engage in peaceful, inclusive dialogue.”

Green Party calls for return to democracy in Bolivia
November 18, 2019
OTTAWA —The Green Party of Canada is alarmed by the rising levels of violence,
detentions and deaths in Bolivia and supports calls for impartial
investigations.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Inter-American
Commission on Human Rights have attributed the most recent deaths to the
“disproportionate use of force” by the Bolivian army and police.

"We are very concerned that the new, self-proclaimed government in Bolivia is
threatening Indigenous rights, " said Interim Leader Jo Ann Roberts. “It is
urgent that free and fair elections take place within the constitutionally
required 90-day period, and that the safety and security of MAS party
representatives be guaranteed."

After President Evo Morales stepped down, the vice president and the leaders of
the upper and lower chambers resigned under threat of violence. The opposition
assumed power without the backing of a majority of legislators.

Paul Manly (MP, Nanaimo-Ladysmith) said, “There can be no legitimacy to a
political process when more than half of the members of the legislature feel
unsafe to show up and participate. We recognize the authority of the Bolivian
Constitutional Tribunal but are concerned that their ruling to recognize the
Añez government without quorum in the legislature may have been made under
duress.”

"There is much at risk,” said Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands). “Under
Evo Morales, huge strides were made in alleviating poverty and protecting human
rights and the environment. The Government of Canada must not recognize Jeanine
Añez as the interim government leader. Canada must use every diplomatic lever
to ensure that authorities in Bolivia do not abuse their power.”

Latin America and the global reactionary wave

http://www.internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?article6256

The reality of the current turn to the right in Latin America is as evident as
its instability. Do not be fooled: this is not about any impasse or “hegemonic
draw”. The relationship of forces is worse than in the previous cycle, as is
evident in the emergence of an authoritarian phenomenon in Brazil, the
“moderate” turn of Kirchnerismo, the permanent coup threats in Venezuela or the
risks of right-wing victories in Bolivia and Uruguay. However, the shift to the
right in Latin America law is based on a still fluctuating dynamic with some
palpable ripostes: the victory of AMLO and the fall of the old regime in
Mexico, the overwhelming electoral defeat of Macri in Argentina, the bogging
down of imperialism and the right in Venezuela , the vitality of some social
movements (especially the feminist movement, but also the workers’ movement in
some countries). In Brazil the result is also ambiguous at the moment:
Bolsonaro is advancing significantly with his major reforms (pensions, tax),
but subject to increasing discredit, instability and an emerging fightback from
the mass movement. We are not seeing a generalized “Bolsonorization” of the
region, the turn to the right is advancing but on unstable ground and we have
not yet seen a strategic defeat of the popular classes.

Local 222 was at one time a local of the UAW, later the Canadian Auto Workers.
It is now a local of Unifor. Unifor is a general trade union in Canada and the
largest private sector union in Canada. It was founded in 2013 as a merger of
the Canadian Auto Workers and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers

I haven't watched the whole episode, but the item at 6:15 is worth spreading
around.
Some stuff on the Montreal march before that.

Tony Cartalucci
A 16 year old girl is obviously not behind a “global movement” demanding
“climate action” from governments.

The massive corporate Western media is. And anything the corporate media is
behind certainly cannot be described as “grassroots.”

Cartalucci offers us two alternatives. The massive climate change movement was
created by a single individual or it was created by “corporate Western media.”
I propose a third alternative. There were already millions of people anxious
to respond to climate change and Greta Thunberg came up with an idea that that
was simply a spark.

But if I were to concede that a massive movement could be created by a single
individual, why shouldn’t that individual be a 16 year old girl?

By way of comparison I offer the example of Terry Fox. At the age of 21 he set
out to run across Canada. It was only when he reached Ontario that he started
to gain a wide following. Today there are Terry Fox runs in many countries.

[Marxism] Climate

Today, in my dentist’s office, I was looking at Readers Digest. I was struck
to see articles acknowledging the seriousness of climate change.
Below see a communication from a BC, Canada, school board.

Dear Parents and Guardians: These past few months, conversations about the
global climate crisis have been occurring more often in the classroom, at all
levels of government and in mainstream media. Tomorrow, there are rallies
expected around the world. Already, students in B.C., some here in Nanaimo,
have staged climate strikes to raise awareness about this very important issue.
As a district, we applaud and encourage all students in this type of social
action, as it helps build confidence to speak on matters most important to
them. They are our future leaders. We are witnessing a growing intolerance by
our youth pertaining to the inaction of corporations and governments in making
significant changes in policies and business practices. Led primarily by Greta
Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Sweden, climate advocates across the world point
to scientific evidence that climate change is real and should be taken
seriously. I am happy to share that the district has taken steps to address
this issue. Last night, the Board of Education approved a Strategic Plan in
which one of its goals is to be a leader in environmental stewardship and
sustainability. The Board also updated its administrative procedure on
environmental initiatives to focus on the stewardship of the land. Your child
may feel the need to participate in one of tomorrow’s various climate strikes
across the region which will be held during or after school hours. We invite
you to have these important conversations with your child. I write this letter
to assure you that your child will be supported in an excused absence, provided
we have your expressed permission for them to miss school.

[Marxism] Text - The U.S. has lost the Afghanistan war

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-the-us-has-lost-the-afghanistan-war-dont-let-it-botch-the-retreat/

At some point in the next year, the White House will almost certainly complete
the task it suspended last week, and negotiate a retreat from the largest
military defeat it has experienced since Vietnam.

The word defeat will not be uttered. Nor will retreat. Instead, “peace
agreement” and “phased withdrawal” will be the preferred euphemisms, partly out
of respect for the 3,459 soldiers, including 157 Canadians, who have given
their lives in this 18-year war in Afghanistan, and partly out of a sense of
political self-preservation.

But there is no disguising the fact that it is an admission of defeat in an
unaffordable and unsustainable conflict.

The main challenge for the Trump administration will be to make it look like
something more noble, by extracting some visible concessions in exchange for
its retreat. The difficulty of accomplishing this in a non-humiliating way
helps explain President Donald Trump’s bizarre shifts in behaviour last week,
during which he was prepared to hold a rather distasteful-looking summit with
Taliban leaders at Camp David three days before Sept. 11, and then cancelled
the whole thing in alleged response to yet another bloody Taliban attack.

The main challenge for the rest of the world will be to ensure that those
concessions do not strictly serve narrow U.S. interests – that is, that they
are not singularly focused on the chimeric threat of Afghan-based international
terrorism – and that they include commitments that allow us to keep at least
some of the promises we made to the Afghan people, giving them a sense that two
decades of violence served some beneficial purpose.

At best, those gains will be marginal. The United States is leaving not because
the Afghan National Army is in a position to take control of a country it holds
and is fully able to secure. Rather, the U.S. is leaving because it has proved
to be impossible, at any price anyone wants to spend, to prevent the Taliban
from controlling half that territory and from bringing horrifying violence to
the rest.

This is why the United States is negotiating only with the Taliban, and not
with the elected Afghan government it installed. (In fact, the Trump
administration this week angrily withdrew US$160-million in funding to the
government, on the eve of elections).

It is the Taliban that is fighting the United States and its allies. There has
not been a surrender or ceasefire on either side – both are pursuing a fight
and talk strategy. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo boasted last week that they
had killed “over 1,000 Taliban” in 10 days, and the Taliban has responded with
horrific attacks, most recently a bombing on Thursday that destroyed a hospital
and killed at least 20.

At least 82 per cent of Afghans, according to polls, have “no sympathy” for the
Taliban. The prospect of a return to the sort of Islamic-fundamentalist
government they meted out in the late 1990s is abhorrent to the majority of the
population.

But the extraordinary level of violence – which has killed tens of thousands of
Afghan civilians and maimed or impoverished far more – is also something
Afghans desperately want to end. And that will only happen with a U.S.
withdrawal. Big military surges under Barack Obama and Mr. Trump have only
further inflamed the conflict and increased instability. Afghanistan is set to
have a national election next weekend, and there are ominous signs that it will
be blocked by awful acts of violence.

Afghans’ biggest fear is not either of the combatants, but the war itself.

The Taliban have shown that they are capable of ending the violence. When they
called a three-day ceasefire on the eve of Eid last year, the country was
startlingly peaceful for three days (and then for another 15 as the government
extended its ceasefire).

They have not, however, shown any trustworthy commitment to the minimum rights
of women and girls, to the maintenance of democracy or to basic rule of law.
Here is where the retreat negotiations, which have so far been kept secret, can
have some sway.

Sadly, the U.S., in their statements, have had an almost singular obsession
with the possibility that the Taliban would once again allow al-Qaeda to use
Afghanistan as a base for attacks on the U.S. or its allies – the issue that
formed the legal basis for the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Few terrorism
experts consider it a plausible threat
