If you put a bunch of them on your car you will become at least

Some of the finger print readers read the temperature differences
between the ridges and grooves, the one on the HP iPaq for instance.
Probably wouldn't work for very long after the finger was removed. Of
course, by the time the thief discovered that t dead finger didn't
work, you'd still be without it -- -

might work for a short while, but as the finger dies it will no longer

Re: [MBZ] 300E, 305K miles

2005-12-01 Thread Dave M.
This would be a 300E with a 3.0L, M103 inline 6 engine. It's quite a
robust powerplant really, but old-school technology with
quasi-mechanical fuel injection that is a real bear to keep working
properly. (Don't ask how I know.) It's also underpowered, IMO.

However, the engines should last a LONG time. They usually need a
valve job (guides/seals) by 150k, the symptom is high oil consumption
(quart per 1500 miles or worse). But the bottom ends usually last
almost as long as the diesels. If properly maintained, I wouldn't be
surprised to see 500k+ on the original engine, with a couple of valve
jobs in between. 300k wouldn't scare me away if the car was cheap, ran
well, didn't blow smoke or puke fluids. I'll probably end up selling
my pristine 300E eventually, simply because I just don't like the
anemic (torque-free) powerplant, and the (relative to a diesel) poor
MPG.

As fun as it is to drive a new (to you) car. Driving a used vehicle
you just bought 400 miles is not my idea of enjoyment. Every car I buy
that isn't in my comfort radius is not driven home. I always want to
make sure that I, myself, am not the cause of some major repair bill
because I wasn't patient about jumping in and taking off. Making
required checks isn't really PC to do in the PO's driveway. Plus,
personally, I take the vehicle to a qualified Brand mechanic to do
immediate fluid exchanges before such use as well. That way if there
is something major I find out about it before I drive a rod through
the block.

By these are just my own personal paranoias.

2005-12-01 Thread frederick w moir

Hi, All.
I've had 2 81 VW's, Rabbit and Dasher wagon, The only fuel related problem
that I had with either of them was that the hose from the tank to the fuel
line, in the rear of the car , was braided hose and when checked
(finally!) was found to be wet. (sound familiar?). Replacing the hose let
me park the car and an hour later restart, just as it's supposed to, and
not have the fuel run back to the tank due to air creeping in through the
failing hose. This was especially troublesome when parked facing uphill.
Check all of the fuel hoses, would be my first job before forking over the
cash.

All depends, has the engine been replaced yet. And if not, does it use any
oil?

If the first answer is Yes then it's probably worth the price.

If both answers are no then it's probably still worth the price as long as
you understand that you may be facing engine issues in the near future.

If the engine has not been replaced and it's using any amount of oil then
I'd run away, fast. And then, maybe Kaleb can buy it for $500.00..

Marshall:

I know of two turbos that have failed in exactly that fashion, one on
my car and one on someone else's. Both showed serious lack of boost at
low speed cold and both showed excessive oil consumption. One (the MB
one) blew blue smoke on acceleration. My volvo TD didn't, but the
exhaust was full of coked oil and actually caught fire after the turbo
was replaced (quite an experience, having burning carbon blow out the
exhaust!).

The failure is not primarily a seal failure, it's a bearing failure.
They do wear out eventually, and bad bearings usually result in seal
failure before the turbo stops working altogether.

I think headlights too and also the warning sign in trunk, although, like
headlights, you can add that. I found one for the SD and the plastic bracket
at the last OkieQ. Everything snaps right in place. (esp if Lt. Don is there
to tell you that you've got the bracket turned the wrong way!) Very cool. Also
comes with any car that was European delivery. It's very nice b/c the trunk
light illuminates it when it's stowed. ONly prob on an SD is the sign is cast
iron and the trunk lid is Aluminum...any small wind and you get hid in the
head with the trunk lid.

I'm getting a rhythmic noise coming from the shift console of my '93 300D.
At first I thought it was a speedo cable noise but it's gotten louder and
it's obviously coming from the console right around the shifter.

I only get it on light acceleration from low speeds, but don't get it at
idle, at constant speed or at full throttle.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

Thanks!

2005-12-01 Thread Constantine N. Polites

The 350SDL is worth the the $ 5,600, for the chassis alone. You must
count on replacing the motor- it will fail. The
motor should be purchased as a rebuilt unit from Mercedes, with a 50,000
mile guarantee or 4 years. Do not consider
any other options. To do this you must be prepared to perform the labor
yourself or have deep pockets.

I have been thinking more and more of taking my bike. Starting the SD at 20
degrees and driving it 6 blocks is painful.

15 miles on a bike - that's a pretty good work out. I jogged for one season
and got from being able to jog for 1 minute (and getting near heart attack
level) to being able to go 4.5 miles 3 times/week. I bet 15 miles on a bike is
about equivalnet to 4.5 miles of jogging. You must have kept in shape. No
shower here at work, so in KC summer heat, even 6 blocks, you might
get...unpleasant.

Just think of the possibilities...rather than collecting WVO from the back

At one point I lived 2.5 miles from my office and commuted by bicycle

I'd head in the wrong direction to get a good ride (15 mile) ride in before
work. Also great for head clearing.

If the first answer is Yes then it's probably worth the price.

If both answers are no then it's probably still worth the price as long as

Re: [MBZ] Intermittent Heating Question

2005-12-01 Thread dieselbenz24
My heater works fine for about the first 45 minutes of a trip and then
blows just barely luke warm to cold. Is this the problem of the
disintegrating tube from the dash to the thermostat unit ? Any
 insight would be appreciated.

Quite likely. If it resumes heating on MAX the chances are good.
Otherwise, perhaps it's the monovalve going out.
-- Jim

It does *not* resume heating on Max. The other strange thing is that the car
has a turn valve between the auxiliary water pump and the heater core. Not
sure why they put this there, others have said this is not a production config.
 Also the AC doesn't work.

Well then it's not the foam hose. MAX bypasses all temperature control.
Pull the monovalve insert and examine it for tears. 5 minutes and a
screwdriver is all it takes. Don't lose any of the big washers, and
remember the order they came out!

the car has a turn valve between the auxiliary water pump and the
heater core. Not sure why they put this there, others have said this
is not a production config. Also the AC doesn't work.

Somebody was having trouble with either the monovalve and/or the control
circuit of same, but coolant wasn't shutting off and they were getting
heat when they didn't want it. Enter manual valve.

The monovalve gets slow PWM 12V, and when energized corks off the
coolant

flow. You can put a test light or meter on it to see if it's getting
told to do reasonable things.

Or just unplug the valve's electrical connector and see if heat shuts
off

during your drive or not. If it's still getting cold in the cabin, it's
got to be the valve itself, or some other plumbing problem.

There's a reason the monovalve insert is so cheap and easy to replace!

Re: [MBZ] 1991 350SDL

2005-12-01 Thread Loren Faeth
For my money, the 126 SDL is the best long distance car there is. Period.
the end. I am not convinced there is anything newer or older that is
better. They are comfortable, relatively economical, and still attractive
nearly 30 years after the initial design. (I was told by someone the
design concept started in 75) My 86 is exactly like the car featured in
the 1986 S class sales booklet. It is the only car I ever had that I
thought was beautiful. the 67 Chevelle SS 396 in bright metallic blue was
a close second.

I had about $10 grand in my 86 SDL after purchase and initial fixup. I
have driven it over 200,000 miles, and it is STILL a wonderful car. After
rebuilding the suspension and new Bilsteins, it is now better than
ever. It runs strong, and if the cancer didn't get it, i'd never need
another car. I'd fix it forever. Being in a cancer zone, I will probably
start using it winters only after this winter. Even with the cancer bug,
it has been less expensive than any other choice in its size range. A 123
will still run cheaper. a 201 190D or a 124 diesel will probably run
cheaper. But the 126 is a beautiful, comfortable car.

91 sounds better when you tell neighbors and friends what your car is, but
86-91 SDLs are all great, save the 350 engine problems as noted. If you
plan to keep and drive the 91 SDL, then if it doesn't have a factory
replacement engine, factor that into the purchase price. If you will put
at least 200K on it, then you can easily justify the cost of a factory
replacement engine, if it needs one.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Mileage of a Suburban with 6.2 6.5 Diesel engines

2005-12-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Both are good vehicles. The 6.2 might be a little better because it
wont have the electronic IP on it. Wont have as much power though.
Depending on the rear end, an older 6.2 will get anywhere from 17-18
city and 20-24 highway. The 6.5 turbo should be able to do about the
same, once again, depending on the rear end. Now my 1 ton 6.5 truck
will only get about 12 no matter what its doing, but it has 4.10 gears
in it.

others claim it to be 20+ MPG!!
What's up with this?

I just asked the seller this question:

Is the turbo on this car original or has it been replaced? You can tell by
looking at the turbo mechanism on the right side of the engine. It will have

[MBZ] 30 MM gpy. Biodiesel Plant planned for Wyoming

GILLETTE -- A Wyoming-based start-up company plans to build a 30
million-gallons-per-year biodiesel plant in Campbell County.

It would be the first-ever biodiesel plant in the state and among the
largest in the nation. It would also create a new opportunity for Wyoming
farmers to grow camelina, canola, brown mustard and other oil seed crops.

Wyoming Biodiesel Co., a subsidiary of Sheridan-based Energy Fuel Dynamics
LLC, says it is working with a strategic partner to power the facility
using waste steam. Construction could begin next spring, said business
development manager Jim Kintz.

Estimated cost to build the plant is from $35 million to $40 million.

Once the plant was announced, people wanted to buy all of our production,
Kintz said.

Biodiesel is produced through a chemical process separating glycerin from
fat or vegetable oil. The biodegradable, nontoxic fuel can be blended with
petroleum-based diesel and used in almost any diesel engine with little or
no modification, according to the National Biodiesel Board, a national trade
association representing the industry.

The biodiesel production process also generates a high-protein cattle feed
by-product.

Our goal is to maximize the use of Wyoming resources for feedstock,
building state-of-the-art production refinement facilities, expanding
employment opportunities statewide and consumption of the produced
bio-fuels, Kintz said.

[MBZ] W123 rear spring/trailing arm removal

2005-12-01 Thread tom savage
I need to replace a rear trailing arm on my '82 300D. I've got a new
one from OkiePartz ready to go in, but I'm curious about the removal of
the old one. The manual tells me I need to pull the entire rear axle
assembly, but my own inspection says this is unnecessary, correct? The
other point that really has me wondering is rear spring removal. I'm
told that a spring compressor is not required for this. Can I safely
remove the spring after loosening the bolts at the pivot points on the
trailing arm and slowly lowering the arm under a floor jack? Again, it
looks like it, but given the amount of energy stored in these things, I
think I'm better off not finding out the hard way.

For those wondering why I would want to do such a thing, I had a rather
nasty surprise on the way home from work the other day:

Thanks,
Tom

Casey,

The interior was upgraded, and that included the new-style seats which
IMO, are infinitely many times better than the old type, pleated
leather door panels instead of the flat perforated leather, and a
wooden roll-top center console box. To compensate for lack of a
glovebox, the passenger's side underdash panel was sculpted to allow
for small storage space for sunglasses, etc. Other minor interior
changes included a better stereo with speakers in the front doors, an
illuminated sunroof switch, and a leather wrapped steering wheel +
shift knob.

I heard on the radio yesterday that a new bd plant is going to built

there were all kinds of tax breaks for alternative energy things, lot of
work on coal, etc. during MEOW (the Moral Equivalent of War), but I
think they only lasted for 3-5 yr.

Wonder if setting up a small WVO conversion plant would be feasible? Is
that what the co-ops in the W and NW are doing?

I have a 98 Ford F150 and I like the look of it well enough. I can't say
that I like the 04-05 as well. They do look too big and too slab sided to
me. However, check the crash statistics. The 04 and up performs much better
than the earlier versions and much better than Dodge or Chevy. Sometimes you
give up something for something else. I could live with the look if I was in

Re: [MBZ] Rhythmic noise coming from shift console, 93 300D

2005-12-01 Thread Gary Thompson
Lee,

Does it do it less on coasting or acceleration? Turning right or left?

I had a situation on my W123 where the transmission shift rod would know
against the transmission housing due to missing bushings. Got worse when
turning a sharp left turn and the rod was thrown against the tranny.

At first I thought it was a speedo cable noise but it's gotten louder and
it's obviously coming from the console right around the shifter.

I only get it on light acceleration from low speeds, but don't get it at
idle, at constant speed or at full throttle.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

 Thanks!

Unfortunately, travel by air with tools has gotten risky. I

that once the new security regulations were enacted and he
had to stop locking his tool bag, he usually lost one tool

In planning my trip to Raleigh to retrieve my W124, I considered all this. I
ended up carrying onboard my cellphone, a plug-in CB radio, my radar
detector, a 1-3 power splitter, some books on tape, my AA card and that's
it.

I thought about shipping some tools and stuff down to Raleigh via FedEx
Ground, but in the end, didn't bother. In my case, the only thing I needed
to make the 700 mile trip back to Boston was a $.29 ceramic fuse. Coulda
been worse...

If you are retrieving a remote car and you want to have tools, consider
FedEx Ground or even the Post Office flat rate box ($7.75 for as much as you
can stuff in it). FedEx Ground is pretty cheap.

resident VW diesel guys have any ideas on this?

The cure is a rebuilt pump, assuming the diagnosis is right. Any small
leak in the fuel lines that will admit air will cause the same symptoms.

Some people have driven them with this problem for quite a while by
adding an electric lift pump. Eventually the seals on the IP will get
bad enough to weep fuel, though.

Gary,

Noise is prevalent only on light acceleration. I don't know whether turning
has any effect.

I can also minimize the noise by moving the shift lever a bit.

I'm thinking transmission mounts. We just did the engine mounts and I'll bet
that the combination of new engine mounts and tired transmission mounts are
causing something to be out of position, as you describe.

Otherwise the transmission operates normally...a bit of flaring when its
cold, but that's it. Oh, and by the way, I *just* did a transmission fluid
and filter replacement.

[MBZ] Glow plug reamer for OM606?

2005-12-01 Thread J.B. Hebert
Does anyone know where I can find a reasonably priced glow plug
chamber reamer for an OM606 motor? The only one I've found is by
Klann and costs $160 through Samstag Sales. I'm sure its quality is
excellent, but I'm not going to use it often enough that I need the
very best. Since I paid about $50 for the one for my OM617, I was
hoping to find a better deal somewhere.

BEFORE you spend a nickel anywhere else, try running it with an auxiliary
electric fuel pump, OR if stationary, hold a can of fuel up above the
engine and run a hose to the fuel filter in line.

Is the problem starting, or running? My Quantum would crank forever before
starting. The tank is below the engine/pump. There is NO transfer pump on
the VW, at least in the 80s. I stuck the electric fuel pump on, and it was
immediately cured. Yes, I did replace lines and look for leaks. Probably
was a rust dot on the steel line under a body clamp.

If it gets foamy fuel while running, I don't know, but the electric pump
may help. The previous post say it will help for a while.

I also have the dial indicator setup, but have set the timing on many
of these by just using the timing marks on the cam, injection pump and
crank pulley. The last time I changed the timing belt on our former
'96 Passat tdi, I used this method. Those particular pumps can't
accept the dial indicator I have, and I don't have the VAG-COM
software. I brought it into a local VW shop afterward for a software
confirmation of my timing, and it was absolutely spot-on.

Gentlemen,

Just got on this group and got a question.
Was gifted a '78 450SLC and the headlights
don't work except when the high beam flash

My question is, how do you get at the wiring

designed by the same guy that designed Fort
Knox.

My thanks for any help!
