A kart will have better lap times than a bike on a road course, with
identical engines in each. I admit an Atom is lots bigger than a kart,
but at least it has a real suspension.

Not to mention downforce. A magazine (RT?) did some testing of an F1
car about 20 years ago, I believe they timed it through a mid-speed
corner at 2.4G. OTOH, a bike is narrower, so it gets to take a straighter
line through the corner. On very tight corners, this MIGHT be as important
as downforce, but in most circumstances, G-forces will be all-important.

83? That steering wheel belongs in a earlier model, also the headlights

Also I doubt wether the bottom end is the cause of the noise unless severly

[MBZ] Windshield can't be wiped?

I don't know what's wrong with my windshield, but the wiper will not
clear the water off of it. It just kind of smears it around. This is with
wipers of 3 different brands, including Bosch and Napa's teflon
blade. There is good spring tension pressing down on the blade.

Could there be some kind of chemical on my windshield making this
happen? Maybe an old dose of RainX? Maybe car wash liquid
wax? Is there any way to get it off?

Sorry to pester everyone with such a dumb question.

Could well be wax or some similar contaminant from the road. I'd try
scrubbing with Bon Ami. Don't use similar cleansers like Ajax---Bon
Ami is only very mildly abrasive and won't scratch, others are
harsher. I believe BMW officially recommended it at one point in a
service bulletin for cleaning stubborn glass.

If that doesn't work, try lacquer thinner---but be VERY careful not to
get any on paint, rubber, or anything else besides the glass! It is
an effective solvent of practically anything petroleum-based, which
whatever's on your windshield probably is.

Wow. It's a street-legal go-kart. Looks like an absolute blast to
drive. :)

Wonder if it's street legal in the USA.

On cursory examination, it looks like it should be if titled as a kit
car. You'd never get a whole one past the EPA, but maybe if you
imported the chassis and stuck in your own Honda engine...

The directional signals, if like 123, might be repaired by cycling the

I think a diesel would be too noisy in a convertible. In particular,
the VW diesels generate an amazing amount of intake noise at higher RPM,
and that would get old in a hurry on the freeway. Also, the early 1.5L
diesels had chronic head gasket problems.

I've worked on the 8-valve gasoline engines, and while they don't have
the stoutness of the diesels, they're still a pretty sturdy item. CIS
gets a bad name, but it's actually a pretty reliable system that
requires very little attention.

Actually, in Iowa snows I prefer a hardtop.

Yeah, when I lived in Michigan I felt that way too. There was the snow
in the winter, and then in the summer it was too muggy to drive without
the A/C on.

The machine gun turn signal relay generally turns out to be either a bad
turn signal bulb or a short in the wiring leading to the bulb(s.)
Unlikely, IMO, to be a fault with the relay itself, or a problem with
the fuses.

Try 60 mpg with a manual tranny. That's what i used to get consistantly
with my old VW rabbit diesel 4 door on a regular 40 mile commute on a 2

drop)

Loved that car.

Re: [MBZ] Spare 115 relays?

2006-01-04 Thread Jim Cathey

Fresh fuses, and I did the cycle hazard trick to no avail. I can hear
the stupid relay clicking away at high speed like a machine gun. Not
sure I can resolder the dumb thing. Can I?

Yes, my son. Use the Force... (Sorry, just watched SW again,
on LD of course.)

I just did this on the Frankenheap, a full-metal resoldering
and contact cleaning. Worked like a charm, though its problem
was non-blinkiness, not machine-gunning. The trick to getting
the thing back together is to turn on the hazard function first.

[MBZ] Removing or modifying emission equipment

2006-01-04 Thread RELNGSON
I used to go to an exhaust shop that had a big sign behind the desk that
said, If you don't ask me to remove your catalytic converter, I won't
ask you to pay the $2500 fine.

When my Porsche was new in 1984 it was having driveability problems due to
it's emission equipment. The dealer knew what was needed to make it run right
but said that if they removed or modified anything and got caught, the EPA fine
was $10K per car.

There was no such prohibition against owner mods so I fixed the problem
myself.

83? That steering wheel belongs in a earlier model, also the headlights
should be the 280E style ones but I could be wrong and very early 83's
still

came out had the round ones (poor lighting).
Also I doubt wether the bottom end is the cause of the noise unless severly
overheted or run with low/no oil. Timing chain and valves are a problem in
those motors but the bottom end is pretty well build.

The relay makes the noise, the blink do not blink. The hazards work
just fine and blink all around, even when the signal choses not not
function.

Yes, my son. Use the Force... (Sorry, just watched SW again,
on LD of course.)

I just did this on the Frankenheap, a full-metal resoldering
and contact cleaning. Worked like a charm, though its problem
was non-blinkiness, not machine-gunning. The trick to getting
the thing back together is to turn on the hazard function first.

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star

2006-01-04 Thread Hendrik Riessen

I think the only way is to get them to send you compression figures.
Once the engine is running your end do another test to verify figures.
Also make sure they give you the engine number of this low mileage engine,
that way they at least know that you are not a no-nothing. You have to get
the idea across to them that you know your stuff, that way they will rip-off

[MBZ] What are the differences between the Suburban different trim levels?

2006-01-04 Thread kayoooh @ gmail
Hello List,
For those of you who are familiar with Suburbans, please tell me accurately
what the differences are between the various trim levels of the mid 90's~ up
until now, Suburban.
So far I have been confused by what the SLT and SL refer to, and the GM
dealers seem to be in the same boat too!

Until today my understanding was that the SLT was the top of the line, fully
loaded model but I've seen an SLT tonight with velour interior while at the
same time an SL (which is supposed to be a notch lower than the SLT) hade a
leather interior!
I even suspect that there is an SLE which is supposed to fall somewhere
in-between the above two.

Actually, a web page describing the differences would be nice if one does
exist.

Thank you all,

Omar.

Re: [MBZ] this would be a good project car, euro 123 stick

2006-01-04 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The basics should be the same, in 85/86 they went to the KE/CISE injection
system.
The 123's as far as I know always used the K/CIS injection system. Cold
start valves and other parts of the K-jetronic system can give trouble but
are generally easy to fix/replace. Fuel pumps is one of the things that
gives out regularly on these types of fuel injection systems.
It is recommended to strictly follow the oil change routines in the M102
motor with single timing chain.

Other than that it is the usual 123 problems to look for.
However a word of caution, if this vehicle has not been properly maintained
and has no service history you may get more trouble than you budgeted on.
There is a difference between used and abused and used and maintained.

If tension is ok in wiper blade arms, clean windshield real well with a
sponge and warm dish soap water. Use elbow grease. Rinse with warm water.
Repeat. Windex using a clean rag may work too. Get a new set of Bosch

a clean rag and spray 303 Aerospace protector on it and run the rage up and
down the tip of the wiper blades.

I have Bosch blades which are aproaching three years and 80K miles which are

I don't know what's wrong with my windshield, but the wiper will not
clear the water off of it. It just kind of smears it around. This is with
wipers of 3 different brands, including Bosch and Napa's teflon
blade. There is good spring tension pressing down on the blade.

Could there be some kind of chemical on my windshield making this
happen? Maybe an old dose of RainX? Maybe car wash liquid
wax? Is there any way to get it off?

Sorry to pester everyone with such a dumb question.

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star

2006-01-04 Thread l02turner
You can also do a Oil Analysis on the used engine - the oil can be extracted
from the engine at Tri-Star then after it's in your car and you have around
1000 miles on the oil (new oil filter when the installation is done, of
course) - the numbers should be similar.

Yes, I sell Oil Analysis kits, - but I'm not suggesting you buy mine - there
are numerous vendors selling the kits - with mine it'll take approx 7-10
business days to get results once the oil sample is mailed. And you may not
be able to wait that long - the shop with your car may not want to wait that
long either. And Tri-Star may not hold the engine is someone shows up with
a handful of cash - but it's an option anyway.

The engine at Tri-Star will be sitting on a shelf strapped to a pallet -
they won't be able to do a compression test. And I suspect their only
gurantee is to provide another engine if the one they send is bad. You'll
be out the installation costs and have to pay the shop to install a
replacement is one is needed. So you're right to worry about getting what
your're paying for. Having to pay for the re-installation of a replacement
engine may raise your costs to an unacceptable level also.

You might also ask Tri-Star for the engine # and if possible, the VIN of
the car it was removed from. With the VIN a Carfax *might* tell you
something about the condition of the engine, or it might not. If you get
the engine # *and* the VIN you should be able to determine if that engine
actually came out of that VIN. It might not be possible to tell if that
*exact* engine came from the VIN they provided but MBNA *might* have some
info to help correlate the 2 numbers together. But gathering more info is
never a bad thing. There's also a possibility Tri-Star will tell you that
info is not available. If nothing else, Tri-Star will see you're not going
into this blindly.

In the end, you're counting on Tri-Star to provide what they say they're
providing - only their reputation desire to maintain their good name
(assuming they have one) will make them do that - possibly the local BBB
will have some info on them - but bear in mind that some people making
complaints thru BBB may or may not have been reasonable in their
expectations from Tri-Star - some people want to pay for used but expect to
receive *as-new* parts from a recycler. And when that doesn't happen they
complain. But a call to BBB will be informative.

You can also ask this list and others what the experiences have been with
Tri-Star. I seem to recall them advertising in The Star every issue so
they're going after the MB business aggressively by spending the money.

There are other used engine suppliers out there - Potomac in Md comes to
mind as being one of the biggest. But there are others.

Hopefully this rambling answer will help a little. You;re not totally
without options - BTW, depending on the condition of your old engine, you
could rebuild it, or at the very least (if you want to mess with it) sell
some of the parts to reduce your final cost - unless someone wants it as an
exchange basis.

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star

2006-01-04 Thread BillR
Brian - I got taken once [out and out lies] and then asked for the vin on a
129K engine from Potomac German [at $1,000 more]. They did give me the vin,
then called a hour later and said that they had run the vin, and their 129k
engine had 150k five years ago. Vin could be a good clue - I am sure one of
the listers can tell you if there is a way to check from an engine number.
At that point the 'fully tested', high compression' engine from PGA turned
out to have two cracked rings - blew oil out the dipstick hole. They then
sold me one from one of their employees who Claimed it ran well until he
traded up and brought it in for salvage. Took me three engines - don't do
it that way. I can't do the work and at $940 an engine that hurt. All in
all another car would have been cheaper.

Omar.

dry your windshield then use a ammonia or alcohol based cleaner to clean your
windshield
Could just be a wax build up or oil on it that would cause the streaking

I don't know what's wrong with my windshield, but the wiper will not
clear the water off of it. It just kind of smears it around. This is with
wipers of 3 different brands, including Bosch and Napa's teflon
blade. There is good spring tension pressing down on the blade.

Could there be some kind of chemical on my windshield making this
happen? Maybe an old dose of RainX? Maybe car wash liquid
wax? Is there any way to get it off?

Sorry to pester everyone with such a dumb question.

A good friend of mine with excess garage space just bought a 1978 450SL.
He wanted one for a project car. Well, he got one. In fact, I think it
more akin to a turd. Anyway, the car runs pretty well (from what I
could tell from the passenger seat for a 5 minute ride), but it is in
desperate need of seats! He is going to need lots of parts over the
next year, but right now he wants seats. Anybody got any seats in good
shape. If not, he going to have a local shop recover them.=20

Willie Nelson drives a Mercedes.

But do not lose faith, true believers. The exhaust from Mr. Nelson's
diesel-powered Mercedes smells like peanuts, or French fries, or
whatever alternative fuel happens to be in his tank.

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star

2006-01-04 Thread Loren Faeth
When the engine arrives, have the mechanic put a socket on the front pulley
bold with a standard 18 breaker bar.the engine should turn over, and each
1/2 turn should get very hard to turn. a OM 616 with good compression will
slow you to almost a stop when a cylinder comes up on the compression
stroke. you want to keep in mind that it takes 2 complete revolutions to
hit compression stroke on all 4 cylinders. What happens is that the
compression overpowers you, but as the rate of turning slows, some
compression leak down occurs, and then you are able to torn the engine to
tdc. After tdc, the compression will turn the wrench for you for about 30
degrees

The first used 616 I bought passed this test. All 4 cylinders should feel
the same when approaching tdc.
The second 616 I bought failed this test. It had 3 cylinders that felt
really good, then one that turned easily. This was the engine I rebuilt
and put in our 240D. Kind of expensive, but I plan that the engine will
outlast several bodies.

It was still much better to find out BEFORE i put the engine in the car.

Caveats:
If the engine has been sitting a long time, the valves and seats that are
open can rust. This leads to low compression readings. whether using a
compression tester or the breaker bar test. This will correct itself when
the engine is run. Because of the climate where Tri-star is, rusting is
unlikely.

Unless you get impressive results the first time, do the breaker bar test
over and over until you are satisfied it is producing consistent
results. Reliable measurements are repeatable. I would suggest a minimum
of 12 revolutions (six compression strokes per cylinder.)

Lastly, Call tri-star and ask if Mike is there. If he is there still,
and not the guy you have been working with, ask Mike how to tell if a used
engine is good, just like you asked the list. Mike has always been
straight with me, but I have never bought an engine from them. Then ask
him how to be sure an engine from them will be good. My experience is that
their stuff is good, but the prices are high. I believe I heard of someone
getting a bum engine from them. Mike always said AZ cars (MGs) have good
bodies but worn out drive trains. His hobby was buying MGs in the rust
belt and putting the drive trains in AZ bodies.

Happy hunting!

Loren

Listers,

The wheels of action are finally grinding to a start in the resurrection of
my 83 240D. I'm planning on purchasing a used engine tomorrow from Tri-Star
in PHX. My auto is at the shop in Tucson, and awaiting shipment of the
engine.

Question: How can one really know that the proclaimed mileage on a used
engine like this is anywhere near accurate? It would be in the best interest
of the crooked parts outfit to claim to be selling a nice low-mileage
engine, yet actually to deliver their highest-mileage engine. They are
claiming to be selling me their lowest mileage 240 engine, but as I said, it
would take some genuine honesty not to pull a bait switch.

I know there's probably no answer to this question, but what have you all
found in your experience? Bear in mind that I am no where near this outfit
geographically and thus cannot do any physical investigation.
