Re: [MBZ] Omega service across the universe (real oil)

2011-01-09 Thread Peter Frederick
The proper oils to use in a mechanical car clock are probably the
Elgin M-58 (not make after about 1958) or the modern equivalents.
Nye makes one -- a bit pricey at $35 a 1/4 oz, but you don't need
much (use a dip oiler on the pivots). These are synthetics that
don't change viscosity too much as the temperature changes. Still
may run slow at sub zero temps, but if you use the proper oil for
those conditions, it will evaporate on a hot sunny day when the car
gets massive hot.

For the quartz ones, I'd recommend quartz watch oil in the higher
viscosities. Again, fairly pricey for what you get, but they last
forever.

Be careful with unregistered cars in CA. I found out the hard way when I
bought my 1962 300SE - it had been off the road for several years, and it was
going to cost me a small fortune to get the title and registration released
from the CA BMV. The insisted that I pay the costs of the registrations for
the outstanding years before they would issue a clear title.

This may be the case in other states as well, but I know it is in CA.

I ended up getting a new title issues through one of those lost my title
services, in Alabama, I think. Worked quite well and was a lot cheaper than
paying off the CA BMV.

What is the cap repair? I know I have seen and heard about it but
have since forgotten.

Open clock up and replace crappy Frako capacitors with decent ones.

The non-Frako capacitors in my mid-70's 114 clocks are still good.
I didn't replace them. Pretty much every Frako electrolytic
in the later-model clocks has gone bad.

[MBZ] Domestic TSB Source?

I can find all sorts of references to the TSB, but everyone (Alldata, etc.)
want money to see it.

I just want to see a copy to get a part number for a repair kit that is listed
in it.

Anyone know of a source for TSBs that is free?

It's Ford TSB 07-6-4, I believe the kit number is 7S4Z-54047A50-A.

It's for a fix to the center console armrest hinge/pivot.

If you had GONE to the M1 webpage, you'd see the HOT H2O recirc pump
REQUIRES nothing less then WHICHEVER OIL is currently OPEN in your
garage.

The LUBRICITY of each is directly proportional to the TEMPERATURE of the
garage or basement and the ENTHALPY of the H2O being pumped.

I think I am about ready to call it done, I got all the misc crap
such as covers and what not in the engine compartment. I think I
got that oil leak from the turbo return fixed. I used a prybar
and bent the tube a little bit so it seems straighter now. I did
run it up to operating temp yesterday and did start and run it
this morning to see if it was still leaking oil. A couple of
things I have observed. When stone cold it fires up and idles
smooth. After a minute with the afterglow turns off it does seem
to idle a little rougher and maybe miss on occasion and smoke
more. After a few minutes of this and the engine is warmed it
idles smooth again. Im hoping this is a condition that goes away
after the engine is run a bit and cleaned up. I used some JB weld
to plug up that broke off nipple on the main vacuum line, once it
sets up Im going to pull the car out of the garage and take it up
and down the street and see if she flys apart or not. I am quite
sure once I put the wife back in it something will blow up.

replacing rods etc I am sure nervous the whole thing will fly
apart. BTW, this is the engine I just replaced the #1 rod with
the updated heavier rod. Just from my observation I dont sense
any different vibrations even though the weight does not match
the other rods. Will see what time holds for it though.

I am going to stop by the local dealer tomorrow and see what I can find out. I
suspect they will be able to help me out - if not, I will take you up on the
offer. Thanks!

Basically, there is an armrest on the center console that can be raised or
pivoted out of the way. The pivot is a steel rod, but the way they anchored it
at each end is with pieces of plastic, that can't handle the stress over time
and ultimately disintegrate, making the whole armrest rattle around.

I suspect the kit is some new arrangement for the pivot that is a bit more
substantial and less likely to fail from repeated use.

I'm going to stop in a local dealer tomorrow - it's in a small town, so I am
sure I'll get plenty of help. The smaller guys are a lot more accommodating
than the big box dealers, at least so I've found.

I would think if you go to the dealer
parts counter and ask for the
repair kit for that TSB they should be able to look it
 up.  There should
be no charge for the lookup if you are going to buy the
 kit.

Dan,

Thanks for your insight. I'm also drawn to older styles, like
the old VW
VDO gauges. I wish they'd had a clock on the dash - I would
really like to
make a desk clock with the style of a VDO VW gauge from the sixties.

Although I'm tempted to seek out an original mechanical watch of some
notoriety, family and job and Mercedes are taking up most of my
time, and
I'd like to get back into some wood work or maybe even learn to
work metal
(welding).

I've never seen a post 1950 automobile without a heater -- I think
they were required after that time. Even my great aunt's 48 chrysler
had heat, and heaters really aren't an option when the installation
rate is 100%. Dealers might have listed them as optional, but they
were integrated into the dash the time new cars came out after WWII,
and I suspect not getting one would require it deliberately be left out.

1984 would be S123 chassis, I assume with OM617. AFAIK, only the yanks and
the
japs, and maybe the canuks, ever got a turbo on their OM617. I've seen a
couple
of euro S123, both of them were 617NA with 4sp manual trans and cloth seats.

The bumpers on this one look kind of small, (euro), the seats might be velor

hubcaps
when a USA car would have come standard with bundts. I'd say its a converted

Andrew wants a 1985 turbo wagon, I think the non-California version.

noise is a little more pronounced than the Yokohama YK-520s from 35-45
mph, but is not noticable at 55+ and not really objectionable at lower
speeds. I'm hoping they have at least as good snow traction as the Nokian
WRs we have had on the '82 240/3.0)...

The WRG2s (225/45-17) I bought for my C300 in 2007 have done very well in
what little snow we get here. I mount them only when snow is forecast and
leave them on for awhile. I was planning on taking them off in a few days
but
now the weather liar is talking about significant snow next week. Maybe.

On my car, they are very quiet with just a slight hum at low speed.

I don't like to swap the wheels back and forth much since the summertime
18 rears weigh in at 50# each.

I finally caved in and ordered an item to make the job easier which is a
Milwaukee 28V 1/2 cordless impact wrench. Breaking loose and spinning the
MB's bolts off (aluminum nuts on the Porsche) is going to be sooo easy now.
And
spinning them on, just short of tight, of course, to finish with the torque
wrench.

Yep, an OPTEST (operational test) will check your work and perhaps restore
your confidence. Assuming good tires/brakes/suspension, gently warm the car
up and keep your eyes and ears open for anything amiss. Keep increasing the

the point of almost outright abuse, if she's still holding together, than
you turn the keys over to SWMBO for the Real Test: daily driving.

[MBZ] Becker Grand Prix 612 harness needed

Got the radio from Andrew (thanks again) but some PO has cut off the
original connectors from the wiring harness in my car, when the now-dead
Pioneer unit was installed. So I have no way to plug the Becker in.
Anyone got a 4-pin power connector plug and the two-pin plugs for the
speakers?

I could probably find individual female connectors to fit the power
pins, worst case. Does anyone know which of the speaker pins is
positive and which is negative (see #6 on diagram, below)?

If you had the head off and cleaned it up (and the pistons tops) it
will clatter something horrible and run badly until you get some soot
built up on the head and piston crowns, and all the air out of the
injection lines -- takes a few miles.

Both of our 603s did this when the head was replaced. Sounds
terrible, and I got lots of white smoke for a while on mine after
startup, but once it has a few miles on it it will smooth out.

Smoky rough starts are pretty much normal after servicing the
injection system.

I'm more concerned about an unbalanced engine, you REALLY don't want

Is the size of the capacitor clearly marked, or is some work required to

Yesterday we used my wagon which had been sitting for several weeks with the
battery disconnected. I reconnected the negative cable, and she fired right
up despite the cold weather we're having, but we were in a hurry and I
totally forgot to reset the clock. It was almost exactly an hour fast.
SWMBO wasn't wearing her watch, and I didn't look at mine (nor did either of
us look at our cell phones). We went all day using the car's time, got home

Anyone got a 4-pin power connector plug and the two-pin plugs for the

Re: [MBZ] Omega service across the universe (real oil)

2011-01-09 Thread Peter Frederick
Way too thick. Remember, there is essentially no power usage there,
a watt or less, and the idea is to have zero friction. Electric
(quartz) movements are driven from the seconds hand, they don't have
a strong spring pushing a step-up gear train like a mechanical watch
or clock. Most of them today have plastic parts, and if you use the
correct plastic friendly very light oils, run forever or until the
coil goes open or the rotor that turns the electrical pulse into
mechanical movement gets magentized and quits moving. No real gear
pressure.

The only use for something as thick as AFT would be the winding parts
of a watch or clock, and they usually get grease.

I've not had mine apart yet, but the old mechanical clocks in the
older Benz models were electric only in the auto-winding mechanism,
where an electro-magent flipped up the weight to 'wind' the clock.
That's the occasional tick you hear in the dash sitting in the
car. Othereise they are a plain mechanical clock, although I don't
know just exactly what the escapement (time regulation) is.

Re: [MBZ] 140 update

2011-01-09 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well I just got done taking the 140 out for about a mile long
cruise. Smoke all cleared out as far as I could tell in the
almost dark. Engine ran great, had plenty of power etc, tranny
shifted fine which it did before. The only major thing now is it
seems to have developed quite a vibration. Im thinking maybe its
from the tires since its been sitting?? The tires are just about
brand new before I started working on the car. It was smooth down
the road before. I dont see that there would be a driveshaft
problem, it went back together the same as I took it apart. I
will have to investigate that further. If it is from the tires
sitting, will that go away after a while on its own?

used some JB weld to plug up that broke off nipple on the main

Oh, there have been others who have gone there. I cant remember

deal on their 3.5. I know I am VERY glad to get this done so I
can move on to the next project. Now deciding on the next project

2011-01-09 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I cleaned the piston tops and underside of head best I could to
get the major gunk off but its by no means as new clean. Only
replacing #1 was a concern of mine as well since the manual gives
a spec of the weight the rods can differ, and the new rod is way
heavier than the others. Just from it running I can tell any
difference. And also there was the other dude on there who did
the same thing and has put 50k or more on his since with no
problems. I figured it was worth a shot. Will see how it goes.

Both of our 603s did this when the head was replaced. Sounds
terrible, and I got lots of white smoke for a while on mine
after startup, but once it has a few miles on it it will smooth
out.

Smoky rough starts are pretty much normal after servicing the
injection system.

I'm more concerned about an unbalanced engine, you REALLY don't
want to toss a rod.
