[MBZ] OT Coleman lanterns

2011-07-18 Thread Fmiser
Nice going Curt!

I hope you are satisfied with yourself.

See what you got me into?

At the auction Saturday I bought a pair of 220F lanterns for
$3. Both are in pretty rough shape, but one had an intact
globe (that alone worth what I paid). So now, thanks to you, I
have a lantern - and any old device like that needs spare parts
too, right? Now I have spare parts.

But the one looks like maybe it could be made to work. Just a
bit of rust at the font fill...

Well, I doubt you went around looking for red and black trucks.
For most of us, the color is just incidental. People who buy new

I don't make the profiles about the meaning of colors. I am just
reporting on what the experts say

Ok, so I guess because I wear black printed shirts most of the time,
have a black truck, and a red truck, I must have no balls and be

Double cab AWD big V8 engined Fords etc. Just perfect for our four snow days

[MBZ] W124 sway bar bracket

2011-07-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Going to be putting ANOTHER sway bar bracket on the 300D -- these
things are driving me nuts. Only put one set on the old car,
originals broke at 250,000 miles or so. Not a problem with the
replacements, but both of them, now used on other cars, have broken,
and I'm on the second NEW set on the "new" 300D.

I'm tempted to have the new one magnifluxed to make sure it's not
cracked before I put it on. They have all, excpet this one, broken
off either at the 90 degree bend at the top or through the punched
bolt hole, which is why I want to check for pre-existing cracks.
They appear to have been hardened, since they seem to be spring
steel, and improper handling or punching can easily crack them in
manufacture.

This one broke off below the top botl hole, didn't find it until I
changed the bushings on Sunday -- a buddy helping me was concerned
he'd broken the bracket off (he's new at wrenching, payment for
replacing his hoses and front/rear end work on his jeep). Snapped
the separate part in half too, probably from fatigue, but was still
attached. Very noisy.

I'm sure the bone rattling rail road tracks I have to cross with a
long line of impatient factory workers behind me doesn't help, but I
drove the old 300D on the same streets for years without breaking any.

The only thing I think I've learned is that the separate half MUST be
bolted down flat and hard, both ends, otherwise there is a stress
concentration through the bolt hole with the bolt acting as a lever.
That may explain the ones that crack across the bolt hole, but not
the last two, which broke elsewhere.

I personally think this is a design defect. In an attempt to get
smoother ride a solid mount was replaced by a flexible spring steel
strap, and hard usage (the terrible roads around here) cause
excessive breakage.

Yes, coal dust was the first fuel attempted. However, none of his
engines produced significant power on coal dust, and he quickly
realized that handing powder for fuel wasn't going to work.

It's called diesel fuel for a reason -- it's what works best.

Re: [MBZ] starting on ether

2011-07-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Gel point is vastly different for #2 diesel and vegetable oil -- #2
has a pour point as low as -30F, and I doubt veggie oil, particularly
used veggie oil, will be fluid enough to pour at 10 F, let along
-30. Not all #2 has a pour point that low, but it can.

There are two larger problems, fhe first of which is viscosity.
Vegetable oil is much more viscous than diesel oil, and I strongly
doubt it will flow well enough below say 50F to start the engine.
Certainly at 0F, most of it will be frozen solid, or pour like cold
molassas, and no start.

Second, it produces both varnish and hard ash, since it contains
phopholipids and is a tricarboxylic acid ester of glycerol. All
that oxygen results in oxidative hardening, accelerated by heat, so
you are going to gum up all the operating parts. The hard ash will
score the pintles in the injectors, causing operational problems, and
can damage rings, too.

This is to say nothing of the presence of trace amounts of protein
and carbohydrates from being used for cooking, along with various
cracking, hydrocracking, and oxidation products and other food
residue. All of this goes away when you make biodiesel (which has
it's own problems).

Poor combustion, for whatever reason, will result in gummed up rings,
stuck lifters, and hard sludge in bad places, this is just the nature
of vegetable oil.

Veggie oil also has different lubricity than diesel fuel, and may
cause serious lack of lubrication problems -- I'm not sure of that,
but it is definitely different.

Water in the tank will instantly grow masses of slime -- veggie oil
in the presence of water is a food feast for multiple
micro=organisms, and you will have a mess very, very quickly once you
get some condensation in the tank (the first day after you fill it,
most likely). Diesel fuel is toxic to most of the bugs, but veggie
oil is pure food. Plugged filters are a chronic problem, and can
happen suddenly.

Mixtures work better than pure waste oil, and in order to actually
reliably operate the car safely, you must start and stop on diesel
fuel and heat the veggie oil until it has the same viscosity as
diesel fuel. Otherwiise, you may end up fuel starved and deeply
inconvenient times, such as when merging into heavy traffic. Mad
mojo, having the car quit suddenly then.

Peter, who puts waste oil in his car once in a while, but will never
try to run on pure veg oil.

Re: [MBZ] starting on ether

2011-07-18 Thread G Mann
Since Mercedes and Bosch didn't "re-invent" the diesel engine they only
optimized it to accept schedule 52 diesel as the common fuel there seems to
be an element of confusion.

Vegetable oil when supplied to the Bosch IP and a Mercedes engine at
viscosity and temperature that will permit acceptable droplet size at
injectors is accepted quite well.
Mercedes engines operate quite nicely on Vegetable oil, and function
normally.
Amazingly, Bosch Injection Pumps like it as well.

Like all diesel fuels it has a gel point. That gel point is higher than
dino diesel and allowance must be made for that by thinning viscosity,
either by temperature increase or dilution. Same for cold schedule 52
diesel, only the gel point is a few degrees lower.

Re: [MBZ] starting on ether

2011-07-18 Thread Max Dillon
You go right ahead and get yourself an engine designed by Ruddy, the engine in
my car (and probably the one in yours) was designed and built to use #2 diesel.

So, does your state law allow you to drive on public roads without paying your
fare share of fuel tax?

I have a black W123. I'm _not_ Dan Penoff! I don't really care
if my car is spotless - so long as it runs right. And from my
experience, the dark interior is more of a heat problem than a
black exterior.

Closer to it. The predominant color for all models is silver of which there
are several variations. Maybe 15% black and a few white. New cars for stock
are ordered by the new car sales manager who doesn't have much imagination.
The previous manager told me about four years ago that if he ordered "a
color" meaning red/blue/green it would likely be hard to sell. BTW, black
inside is almost universal and the cars that have Tex as standard will have it.

So, when an impulse buyer wants a new car this week, he is going to have to
take something that's been sitting out back for a while. And it's the black
Tex cars that the magazine road testers complain about as cheap looking,
which they are. Depressing, even. My dealer has a LOT of 2011 W204s on the lot
and with the facelifted 2012s now appearing, there are going to be a lot of
big discounts plus some going to the auction.

I'm not going to drive something for six or seven years that's going to
bring on buyer's remorse the week after delivery.

Re: [MBZ] The crush victims of today

2011-07-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yea, its pretty sad what all I am crushing. Actually these cars
are pretty well picked over. I have been posting some 126 SD's
with great rust free bodies but bad paint, interior, and engines
on CL, no takers. Fixing to send them off to the crusher as
well. I have sent at least 1 turbo 617 in a 116 to the crusher,
didnt even bother removing the turbo and IP.

You can sell diesels in Cali but the emissions requirements are so
strict that it's hard to justify. Special California emissions
equipment is not unheard of of course, but it seems that manufacturers
today are more reluctant to do this.

I'm speaking specifically in regards to the Subaru Boxer diesel, and the
quote by Kenichi Yamamoto, who lead the development of this engine:

At present, the engine will not meet California's stringent air
emissions regulations. "We would only introduce the car in the U.S. if
it was legal in every state," says Yamamoto. "Meeting the California
legislation is very hard and very expensive. We are researching it,
but there is no timetable." Subaru estimates that fitting the
particulate filter needed to make the engine fully compliant would add
around $1,500 to the price of the car.

I assume other makers are facing similar obstacles.

Re: [MBZ] a W108 250SE Was: Oh, Jaime!...

2011-07-18 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Now thats a nice setup!

Too bad the interior is so worn... I'd guess this car had 100,000+ km on it
before being imported and having a new mph speedo installed.

Typical car dealer with a dream price set. This car is worth money, but not
that much money.

In a related story, I came across a '67 250SE sedan park at a gas station on
the way to my parent's house this weekend. Initial inspection showed a
very clear chassis and body, no real rust, a 1984 inspection sticker, and
enough crud inside and out to suggest it had been sitting a very long time.
Rear end slammed on the ground thanks to a collapsed hydro-compensator. I
managed (after a struggle, long story short) to get the owner of the car and
station on the phone, when he proceeded to tell me how perfect and original
the car was and how its looking for "real money" for it when its done fixing
and detailing it. I made plans to see it again and get the keys to see the
engine and interior. I also explained to him (nicely) how his attempts to
"fix" the fuel injection and rest of the car are just causing more harm than
good and I have no interest in a hacked up car. I want the car as-is, not
as a used-car-lot special.

So today I inspected it closer. Interior all original mb-tex in good shape.
Wood all there with no damage. Sunroof. LMKU Becker Grand Prix (!).
Heater levers moved. A bit of mold, but nothing alarming. A small hole in
the head liner that suggested a mouse nest. No manuals or documents.

Engine was a bit of a sad story of clown-mechanics. Injection pump was
missing... the owner had some story of getting a "new"one from california
which wasn't right, and another from Germany which was very expensive. If
he only knew who to send the original to for rebuilding! Engine was
otherwise all there, washer bag still hanging, etc. AC stuff all in place
and connected.

The (clown) mechanic on staff there explained to me how they replaced the
fuel pump and have pressure up to the injection pump now, but nothing to the
injectors. He asked if I wanted the car, as if he had no real attachment or
interest in it. I explained its real value and gave him my card... if the
owner will be realistic, I'll take it. Book value is $3700-8000.

I've been looking for an early W108 with a sunroof for years now. This one
would need loads of work, but will be a great car in the end.

Lets see what happens.

Well, I think I will chime in here too!

I like white cars BUT, I also think some cars look better in some colors
than other cars etc. For example, my 115 300D looks good in red. I don't
think it would look nearly as good in white and I can't say I have ever
seen a black one or would want a black one. However, the orthodontist in
my office building here has a new black MB (cannot recall exactly what
it is - maybe s500?) and it looks very nice in black. I see red
Corvettes and like them. Not sure I would want a white Corvette. Some
cars just look better in some colors to my eye at least.

Ok, so I guess because I wear black printed shirts most of the time,
have a black truck, and a red truck, I must have no balls and be

Disagree with dieselkopf at your peril.

My 2001 C320 was Obsidian Black metallic and my 2008 C300 is Barolo Red
Metallic. Both kept in show condition year round.

In fact, since the annual MBCA car show is next month at the Nile Country

C300 for the event.

I do agree with no more black cars, however.

However, for many of us, there is a limit to the number of vehicles that
we can have. My truck is overkill for my quick commute to work but is
needed for the trips to the lake to haul materials since we are trying
to renovate out there and to launch and retrieve boats.
I lack parking space at home and am reluctant to incur more insurance
costs on an annual basis or I might also have a Honda Civic or
something comparable for my around town driving. I have my old 300D
which I do use a bit around town in the summer but unless I am prepared
to give it up, I am pretty much stuck with using my truck on a regular
basis too.

I could keep an old truck at the lake for launching and retrieving boats
(I did do that for a bit a few years ago) but then, that would mean
having another vehicle licenced and insured that was driven very little.

Lots of options but not all of them attractive and so I drive the truck
and consider the extra fuel to be at least partly life insurance as I
hope the truck is safer than a small economical sub compact in most
accident situations - (that should give a few people something to
respond to!).

Thanks for the replies. I cant make out any ID but it does have a recessed
circle and uses cotter keys to hold the pens in. Based on this it should be a
Bendix.
I've reconsidered rebuilding the calipers and replacing hoses due to the
expense. Will just (hopefully) replace the screw, bleed the system and check
the vacuum at the booster. Maybe this will be all it takes to get good brakes.

On the outside (opposite the hose) it is cast into the round
part that is the cylinder casing.

The ATE is very hard to read. Bendix has a recessed circle with
the Bendix name. So if it's not clearly Bendix, it's probably
ATE.

My memory also suggests that the Bendix uses tiny "hitch pins"
clips to hold the pad retainer pins in. Those pins are on the
inboard side, so technically are visible with the wheel on,
though being able to look up in that dark hole isn't always easy.

The ATE uses a spring tension ring that is invisible when
installed. These are the ones that are just hammered in or
out. No additional retainer.

I'm not certain that only Bendix uses the clips.

Using ether in an pre-chamber engine is akin to Russian

Re: [MBZ] OT - Battery ? Alternator?

2011-07-18 Thread Randy Bennell
Ended up changing out the battery for a new one and then changing out
the alternator for another new one. The existing battery seems to be ok
now that I have trickle charged it for a longer time. Will find out as I
intend to put it into a boat. The alternator was not putting out what it
should. The windings look burnt too. Covered under warranty but a bit of
a pain to install. My mechanic son did it in a hour but it would have
taken me longer. Have to do it from underneath and remove the ac
compressor and hang it out of the way in order to get to the alternator.

Fingers crossed that this one is better.

13.2v at idle is probably OK, especially if there are other loads on the

the voltage should approach 14+v unless the battery needed significant
charging. By the way, 12.5v is about normal for a fully charged battery
that has been off the charger for a while.

Subject: [MBZ] OT - Battery ? Alternator?

My elder son is experiencing issues with his 2000 Nissan Maxima.

the battery light comes on and then other miscellaneous lights come on
in the dash - ck engine etc.

The engine runs rough. Sounds like it may stall.

Happened during the evening 2 nights ago and again last evening.

I picked him up this morning and took him too work. Pulled the battery
and took it home to charge.
Took it back at lunchtime and re-installed it. Battery by itself read
about 12.5V.
Once in the car and after being started - read about 13.2V accross the
terminals.
My recollection is that it should be about 14.2 V if the alternator is
putting out good current.

The battery is one of the ones with the "eye" and it is not glowing like
it should. Does that indicate a bad battery or perhaps just a low
battery that needs more charging?
Unfortunately, it is also sealed so I cannot just dip the tester in and
see what it tells me.

The alternator was replaced on May 14 of this year but that does not
mean it could not be going bad.

Any great ideas on testing to confirm whether it is alternator or the
battery itself?

Hopefully, I can get my younger son to come by and have a look at it
tomorrow. He is a mechanic so I'll put him to work on fixing it if it
needs the alternator swapped again.

Randy

Re: [MBZ] Crush cars

2011-07-18 Thread Randy Bennell

Hey Kaleb

A while back, there was discussion on here about plates to adapt oil
filters to remote or some such idea.

I asked if it was possible to change the older style oil filter over to
the newer style - ie - change from the top rather than crawl under and
get oil all over you.

It was suggested that it could be done.

Would you happen to have the oil filter setup from the block outward for
the newer style engine that you would be prepared to part with for a
reasonable sum?
My car is a 76 115 300D. If I could convert to the newer style, I would
do it.

If I had the oil filter setup, then I could compare and see what might
be needed to make a swap.

Anyone else with good ideas on this, please chime in.

2011-07-18 Thread Dieselhead
I can't remember what was on the 124 wagon, but they were NOT Teves,
so they may have been Bendix. The ATE calipers are what I call the
"standard" brake pad for MB, VW and more. Two little pins hold in
the retainer spring, and pads. The pads come out the front (on the
front axle) with the caliper mounted.

Any other brand of caliper uses a different system, and i believe all
others have to have the caliper removed, or part of the caliper
removed to get to the pads.

There is some sort of little stamp, maybe 11/2" dia or so on these.
I cannot remember which stamp is which though.

I was travelling through South Carolina and got lost. I flagged down a
police officer by pulling up behind him and flashing my headlights. He
pulled over and remained in his car. I walked up to the car and politely
asked for directions. He was obviously relieved and said "oh, is that all
you need? I thought you were going to place me under citizens arrest for
running through that stop sign back there.". I was shocked, thanked him for
the directions and jokingly told him I would let him off with just a warning
this time.

I pulled over a cop once. One of his co-workers had ticketed me for a blown
headlight the day before. I just came up behind him, cycled my high beams 5-10
times, and he pulled over. I handed him my 'fixit ticket' and he said he'd take

Aggressive looking vehicles are just another way of having an imposing or even

OTOH, have you noticed the (hopefully waning) popularity of aggressive looking

Rack damper spring? I had to replace it on my '82 with a newer
version, but

your '92 should atlready have that.

There is no damper on the IP.

The 190D with manual transmission has a damper on the IP.
(Not the rack damper bolt, and actual little hydraulic strut.)
Helps tame the bucking of the car because of the tight coupling
of the drivetrain.

2011-07-18 Thread Douglas

That is interesting to read thanks.
I personally would not take the time to do this.

Subject: [MBZ] WVO 300TD and 300D Turbo

Folks

It's interesting to listen to the WVO and biodiesel discussions. This
would have been heresy a few years ago, but 4 buck diesel has softened
you people's hearts!

My PERSONAL EXPERIENCE is that i've been running a 300TD (1982) on WVO
for about the last 5 years. The car is unmodified. In my experience,
the initial problem was all the petro diesel crud in the tank. The WVO
cleans that out. Removing and cleaning tanks is probably the best way
to start.

On a 300TD you can drain the tank and remove and clean the strainer
easily at any time that you have low (a few gallons) of fuel in the
tank. I do that probably every 6 months on the 300TD. On a 300D it's a
little harder since the fuel supply line is in the center of the
strainer, but it's still not too bad, just messier.

At any rate, i run 100% WVO down to temps of about 42 F (which is a
lot of the time down here in north Georgia). If it's colder, i blend
with petro diesel. A 50/50 mix will start and run at temps of say,
down to about 35F and colder than that i sometimes add 1 gal RUG (reg
unl gas) to a full tank.

I've not been stranded.

In the colder months, it's not uncommon for me to have to change the
clear prefilter on the fuel line, but i generally don't change the
spin on fuel filter any more often than every year or year and a half.

I've driven the 300TD this way for probably 85,000 miles. About 10k
miles ago, the car wouldn't start without starting fluid even when the
temps for 50F or more. All the glow plugs, etc were good. I finally
rebuilt the injectors with new monark nozzles at a cost of only about
$100 and some time.

As to the cost benefit ratio, the 300D turbo car (an extremely clean,
nice running 1984 that i bought for our 17 year old daughter) only
cost $1650. Remember this is a rust free georgia car!! In 8 months
she's probably driven it 5000 miles. at 4 gals per 100 miles that's
200 gals of diesel at $4x200=$800 if my math is right. The scrap value
of the car is $450 more or less, now, so this is pretty cheap driving!!

It's a problem getting enough WVO these days. We only have a couple of
restaurants that supply us, but i'm not paying for it. I'm about to
advertise with Craig that i'm willing to buy nice clean WVO for
something like 50 cents or more per gal.

We filter by pouring the oil thru 55 gallon barrel top filters that
are maybe 10 or 20 micron. Then we settle for a week or two and drain
off settled out water, fat, etc and then we pump it through a 5
micron bag filter inside a filter housing. It's pretty clean, but
could always be cleaner.

To add to the mid, i just bought a lovely 1992 isuzu NPR truck. This
is a 14 foot box, cab over truck such as most furniture stores have.
It has a 4 cylinder indirect injection engine with a Kiki (licensed by
Bosch) pump. It seems Isuzu made and direct injection engine up till
about 91 then changed the head and added prechambers making it
indirect until about 98 and then went back to direct injection in 99,
i think. Their newer trucks are all direct and the newest stuff is
quite electronically controlled.

I was lucky to get this clean truck for $2500 it's probably worth
$5000 now since we fixed the AC and added 4 new tires (CL $200 for a
like new set of 4 ...they are same 16 inch tires as F250 or something,
so common).

The next project is to build a 2 tank heated WVO system which i'll do
as soon as i find a nice tank of say 20 gals for petro diesel.

Feel free to email me directly or call me 1 pm to midnite or later 706
540-3285 if you want to chat about this.

As for the time investment, i laugh every time i load eight 5 gal
jugs in my car for a longish trip, realizing that they would cost
twenty bucks

EACH if they were stinky petro diesel!!

My 2 cents worth your results may vary and if you choose to do
what i do, you do it at your own risk!

thanks,

xx rick

Re: [MBZ] 1992 MERCEDES BENZ 300TE WAGON - 7 PASSENGER - $3500 (Nassau, Long Island)

2011-07-18 Thread Dieselhead
True, most sheeple just buy whatever the stealership sell them. It
is probably dictated by the marketing geniuses at MBUSA.

I can here the sales pitch now. " black Mercedes tells everyone you
have arrived. Do you have a neighbor that is always trying to one up
everyone in the neighborhood? (Sheeple answers yes) Well! Then when
you drive in in your new Black Mercedes, (s)he will have to notice.
Blah blah blah

MB always has several nice colors. Choosing black is just dumb.

Do the dealers still order 50% of their stock in black?
Or am I wrong and it's MBUSA that did that and the dealers didn't
have a choice?

Mitch.
