When I was able to confirm that Costco sells Top Tier fuel I changed

any of the Top Tier gas retailers (Shell, BP, Mobil).

And we like that they pay their employees a living wage.

Like I told my class last week, there are about 30,000 gun related deaths in
the US each year, about half of those are suicides. Some percentage of the
other 15,000 were people shot by police and some percentage of that is suicide
by cops but the statistics I've seen don't break that out.
There are 300,000,000 or so people in the USA so every year .005 of them will
be killed by guns in any given year. You can compare that to 610,000 people
killed by heart attacks or 33,000 people killed in car crashes.
So you're twice as likely to be killed in a car crash and 400 times more likely
to have a heart attack but guns are crazy and must be restricted. If you read
Freakonomics the guy says (and I think rightly, obviously since I'm talking
about it) that if you really want to prevent deaths work on fighting distracted
driving and preventing heart disease...

Yeah but . . . .

What was that school in New England where the fellow shot and killed a
whole bunch of young children just a couple of years back?
Those little kids were not likely to have heart attacks for another 50
years or so and unless the school bus got nailed by a dump truck, they
were unlikely to die in a car crash on the way to school.
If there were more restrictions on gun ownership over on your side of
the border, then there would likely be fewer nut jobs who legally owned
guns.

We seem to have gone too far the other way. Legal gun owners here are
essentially considered criminals unless they can prove otherwise. Our
RCMP kick down doors and search houses and take away legally stored guns
without excuse and heads don't roll over it. God help us all.

In Texas you have the illegals hauling a dozen people who wreck and kill
a bunch and no one really cares, Happens quite often. Mostly due to
stupidity, which apparently is a constitutional right.

A lot of the gun murders are young black men killing one another, no one
particularly cares because their guns are illegal or they are criminals,
etc. Hard to regulate criminal behavior, and when it is tried, the
media have fits.

These multiple things are anecdotal but grab the headlines far more than
their contribution to the total body count. Wasn't there some Canadian
event a coupla weeks ago?

Over here, the government is reluctant to stop people from smoking
because of the big tax dollars it brings in.
They keep poking away at smokers by limiting where they can smoke but
that is about the extent of the effort to slow it down or stop it.
Unfortunately, there are an awful lot of young people who smoke -
especially the girls. My younger son's wife smokes. We wish she would
quit and hope that if they ultimately have children, she will stop
during pregnancy and not start up again. It is no doubt difficult to
stop and that might give her enough incentive to do so.

[MBZ] Steering Wheel

2015-03-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did some additional coats of vinyl paint today and it really came out nicely.
Not sure what the deal was with the strange finish issues last night, but maybe
letting it sit for a while then recoating did the trick.

One thing that I found interesting:

At the point where leather meets wood on the wheel, the leather pieces weren't
seamed or stitched. That is, the edge of the piece of leather was just cut and
appeared to be stuffed down in the joint between the wood and the wheel. If
you look at the pictures, you'll notice a black band at the intersection of the
wood and leather part of the wheel. This black material is formed with the
rubber part of the wheel but it's soft and pliable, almost like putty.

Here is a link to some pictures as promised. You can't really see the painted
part that well, but trust me, it looks pretty decent now. Leather is scheduled
to arrive on Thursday. In the meantime I need to get some polyester cord for
the stitching.

2015-03-02 Thread clay via Mercedes
They are underpowered for the chassis. #1 boy drives the early w140 version,
which gets terrible mileage. May as well get a V8 and power, since you are not
saving cash at the pump. That said, you will save on valve related things and
heads, since there is but one. The '99 will have good wire harness, so that is
a massive load off the shoulders. The car itself will be much the same as the
more well appointed examples in quality. Fewer whistle to go south.

The early example in the w140 was taxing on the transmission. By the '99, I
think they worked that out, so you will have it mated much better so the engine
is not over working the transmission while moving you down the road. It is a
fairly stout motor. The 300se suffers from garbage wires, which are the
biggest problem at the moment. There is a headgasket that wants changing, and
a fair oil leak out the gasket at the moment. Early model is also NA, which I
do not know if the later cars rectified with a turbo. Maybe not.

Costs are not being reimbursed. Thousands are run through the

monthly fees that are sucked out of users accounts exponentially.
The premium was supposed to be $200, and the computer then steals
$1300 from their bank. The family now faces all manner of mischief.
The osamacare plan takes multiple excess payments from their bank,
wipes out their balance, and the banks ding them with NSF fees.
Other auto pay accounts find the funds not there and more NSF fees
are accrued. Mortgage payments bounce, more payments bounce, the
next osamacare payment is missed, car payment bounces, the whole
mess goes into the crapper. Family is now facing ruined credit,
hassle from mortgage holder, car in repossession process, and the

Like I told my class last week, there are about 30,000 gun related deaths
in the
US each year, about half of those are suicides. Some percentage of the
other
15,000 were people shot by police and some percentage of that is suicide
by
cops but the statistics I've seen don't break that out.
There are 300,000,000 or so people in the USA so every year .005 of them
will
be killed by guns in any given year. You can compare that to 610,000
people
killed by heart attacks or 33,000 people killed in car crashes.
So you're twice as likely to be killed in a car crash and 400 times more
likely to
have a heart attack but guns are crazy and must be restricted. If you read
Freakonomics the guy says (and I think rightly, obviously since I'm
talking
about it) that if you really want to prevent deaths work on fighting
distracted
 driving and preventing heart disease...

Re: [MBZ] OT - CITI Replaces AMEX @ Costco

2015-03-02 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Well, although both Costco and Sam's are warehouse stores, I think their
business models are very different. Disclaimer: I have never set foot in a
Sam's, although I have a nephew who works for them. Costco has a reputation
for selling high quality merchandise and foods at reasonable prices. Costco
has a reputation for paying their employees well, and having very low turnover.
Reportedly, Costco has resisted increasing their profit margin at the expense
of consumers. I don't think Sam's shares these reputations.

Re: [MBZ] OT - CITI Replaces AMEX @ Costco

2015-03-02 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Somebody there told me they don't make much off the goods they sell,
most of their profit is from the membership fees. I'm not quite sure
how that works, I have the Exec membership, which costs like a $100, and
I got $78 back this year on the rebate it comes with. They told me when
I got it if I don't get the cost of it back they will credit it to me,
but I have not gone and asked for it so I don't know. I guess I should
try but I never remember to do it. Its a store credit, so not cash, but
if you use it then you pay less cash.

Costco stuff is indeed of considerable quality and the prices are lower
or competitive on value, and if you have any issue whatsoever they will
replace or refund no questions asked. You really can't go wrong. Gas
is a lot cheaper too, usually like 10cents/gal.

I had Sams in Houston as they were fairly close by, and it was OK but I
like Costco better.

has a reputation for paying their employees well, and having very low turnover.
Reportedly, Costco has resisted increasing their profit margin at the expense

Leased a 2014 Touareg diesel end of last year, similar reasons. Very nice.
Fancy as any Mercedes. She loves it.

I would never want to own a new Mercedes. People who don't have time for
repairs only drive them for a few years until they start to become a
nightmare, and then lease a new one. Ditto for BMW - been down that road.

Gwagen/Steyr is a solid long term choice for DIY types, but it is a truck.
US versions probably not the most economical choice at 13mpg for 30k miles
a year. Has a long-term DIY cult around it, sort of like this list =:-) It
is totally unlike an x5 or GL/M.

 I paid $5k for a 1997 with 71,000 miles on it a little more than a year
ago. Everything on it was in excellent shape, except for the hydraulics.
I spent $700 to replace all 11 cylinders with rebuilds from the best
rebuilder in the country. For grins I put it on CL here in September or
October for $7,500 just to see what would happen. I got a couple of
serious lowballers that harassed me constantly over it. I think the
highest one wanted to offer me $4500 for it.

I had to put CL on his ass because he kept emailing me after I took the
 listing down.

There was a guy who showed up on Benzworld one day with a 1991 SL500 that
had something like 3000 miles on it. It was a true garage queen that he
had purchased new and barely drove, only in the summer and in dry weather
(he lived in SE PA somewhere, I believe.) The car developed some sort of
erosion on the block at the head mating surface, causing a head gasket
leak. Only fix based on his mechanic and the MB dealer’s diagnosis was to
pull the engine, strip it down, weld up the defect and machine the surface.

He wanted to sell it as-is.

He told us that he was thinking $25k was a fair price, considering the
condition and low miles - it truly looked like it had just rolled off the
showroom floor. He may have even put it on eBay, I don’t recall.

The majority of us encouraged him to have the repairs made and just drive
it. He thought he could walk away from it with a big payday. We tried to
convince him that in today’s market the car would barely be worth what he
wanted if it was 100% intact.

Never heard any more. Not sure what he did.

R129s are fun cars, but you don’t buy one to make money on it. I figure
mine will be around long enough for the grandkids to drive, mebbe.

[MBZ] Steering Wheel Refurb

2015-03-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got my $20 steering wheel on Saturday. Got the remains of the leather off of
it. One side is intact, so I should have a good pattern to work from.

The wood parts are in pretty good shape. There are some cracks, but the wood is
solid and nothing is loose or lifted around the cracked parts.

I got some vinyl paint from the local FLAPS yesterday and had at it. I cleaned
the wheel with solvent and masked off the non-covered portions. I was able to
lay down several thin coats last night, but I'm not 100% pleased with the
results. The finish I chose was glossy, but in some areas it's dull. There
doesn't seem to be a pattern, but after a light coat the same areas show up
dull.

Hmm.

Ebay is the place for leather scraps. I found some really nice black leather of
the proper weight for about $18 shipped for a little over 2-1/2 square feet,
which should be plenty. That would arrive on Thursday.

I did take pictures which I'll link to tonight.

By the time I'm done with everything I'm thinking I'll have under $60 in this.

f150 does not have a diesel available. The only 1/2 ton truck with diesel is
dodge either the ecodiesel. The f150 is the new all aluminum truck and if it
was 70k it was probably a platinum or King ranch. The basic xlt is still going
to be close to 60k.

I had an STX down to $28k last fall. I offered $25k but he wouldn't budge.
One thing I found interesting was that neither of the dealers near us had the
ecoboost engines in many trucks. I'd wanted to try one but they always
countered with nobody buys those. Well sure, nobody buys the trucks you don't

Re: [MBZ] ML

2015-03-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm reasonably sure Ford doesn't offer a diesel in the F150 in the USA, only
the F250 and higher. There are 3 engines for the F150, the 2.7l ecoboost v6,
3.5l ecoboost v6 and venerable 5.0l v8. They might still offer a non-turbo v6
but I'm not sure.
None of the above are to be confused with Dodge's ecodiesel.
I read the other night where Chevy is planning a diesel 4cyl for the new
Colorado with speculation this might lead to a 30mpg pickup...

they'd replaced the clutch once... It was a crapbox of a car in every regard
but they sure wound the mileage onto it.Other people have truly rotten luck
with them, no mileage, major failures at massive expense. Its an interesting
spread.

Well, I think we need to wait a bit.
My Mercedes is 39 years old.
Let us see how the Prius is at that age.
My experience with the Toyotas that I have owned has not been great.
2 of them rusted away and the 3rd one committed suicide before I managed
to fix all of the other known faults.

 outages.
Local Prius dealer says he can't keep all colors in stock and some have to be
backordered. Reminds me of the Beetles, those well hated German cars,
 during the '50s and '60s.
You guys might as well get used to hyrid cars and pure electrics since all
the manufacturers are making them; even Mercedes. Toyota was just the first
 with a good one.
I don't love any car; I just like them when they do what they are supposed to

Just what I need. A $71,000 truck to haul the groceries home with,
which now cost triple what they did 8 years ago..

For that kind of money, I can buy an up-armored retired military

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Overheating 240D more info

2015-03-02 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
The passages in the heater core and radiator are pretty small and these
sorts of problems usually occur in older vehicles that are likely
already partly plugged up. I used some of the rad seal junk in my 68
Chevy pickup and ended up with it overheating before very long. I had to
have the rad recored and the heater core flushed out. I swore I would
never use that stuff again. I suppose if I was a long way from home with
a leak of sorts and just needed to get home, I might be tempted but if I
was near home, I would never put anything like that in my vehicle.

a better flush because I got all the stuff out and never clogged another

We'll see. I asked for verification of mileage, if it comes back over about
3000 I'll probably pass. At that amount for a small machine it probably needs
top end work. This far south its evidence of lots of short trips. In a northern
sled I wouldn't be worried.
On the other hand he's asking so little money it might be worth putting a top

Was listed $45k or so, I beat on them a bit as it had been there awhile
and the weather up there has been bad so they have not been moving iron. I
stopped at another dealer yesterday morning on the way to see this one, a
very similar car had literally just come in from a Daimler employee, they
were fixing yo do the CPO inspection, about the same price. There's one in
CO that's nice too, a bit more but 2014. They wanted to send it to me.
There's a bunch around similar prices. MB announces a new CpO deal
 tomorrow.

We drove a 2012 bluetec GL, it was noticeably less peppy and the engine
and tranny were really working to move the car. We drove a GL 450 and it
moved like the bluetec ML. Gas v diesel is probably a wash on fuel costs.
