[MBZ] My announcement

I wanted to let you all be the first to know about my decision and 
announcement.  I have been thinking long and hard about it, and had to 
screw up my courage but with your help and consideration I decided it is 
finally time to let the world know.


I have become transGerman.

Yes, this may surprise everyone, but it is something I have known since 
I was a kid, even before I really knew what German was.  I guess my 
first awakenings started when I watched WW2 movies on TV when I was 
young.  Then Combat! came along in prime time, and my curiosity was 
aroused more by the German soldiers, tanks, guns, half-tracks, and yes, 
old Mercedes staff cars than by Sarge, Little John, etc.  The power and 
strength projected by that machinery resonated with me deep in my soul.  
I cringed when the pilots of 12 O'clock High bombed all that equipment 
but I could not let on. As time went on I was always the German when we 
played war, and willingly allowed myself to be shot and captured by my 
American friends. They all thought it was just playing, but inside I 
knew I really was German and it was not acting for me.  Hogan's Heroes? 
Don't even get me started on that -- Colonel Klink showed me that 
wearing a monocle was OK, even though I only did it in private.


In high school, when I heard a classmate's father actually owned a 
Mercedes-Benz car, you can't imagine the feelings that stirred in my 
heart.  I wanted to go touch it and feel it and run my hands over it but 
it was not to be.  I still could not tell anyone for fear of the 
lingering stigma associated with Germaness, but when another friend 
started taking German language classes I started to feel like there was 
hope.  I was still afraid to open up to anyone about my true self, so 
kept it repressed even to family and friends.


As I got older, and the opportunity arose to actually purchase a 
Mercedes-Benz car of my own, I jumped on it!  The joy I felt was 
tempered by the reality that actually coming out as transGerman would 
alienate friends and neighbors and family, so I kept it quiet still 
(though I think many suspected my true nature).  When I began spending 
hours talking about German cars, researching the fascinating details of 
the different makes and models and years and how to keep them running 
well, I knew it was only a matter of time.


I found this list and found a community of acceptance, which has meant 
so much for me.


When my son needed another car, my first thought was Mercedes!  I could 
live vicariously even more through his experience, though I was not 
trying in any way to recruit him to this lifestyle, though he did need 
to develop an understanding of what it meant.  My daughter learned to 
drive a Mercedes but she is clearly cisAmerican too.


My near-redemption came when my wife indicated that she too wanted a 
Mercedes-Benz automobile, a diesel even!  I knew then that acceptance of 
my true Germaness was at hand!  I'm sure many of you have suspected this 
and I thank you for your understanding and acceptance of my decision to 
make it official!  What really made it right for now was driving the 
ML350 Bluetech this weekend and just knowing it was sooo right!  All 
my fears and apprehensions have evaporated, and I truly feel joy to 
announce officially and with great pride my transGermaning.


I know we can't all be physically together to celebrate this big event 
in my life so I hope that you all can go start your cars today and think 
a bit about what this means to me, and to work hard for full transGerman 
acceptance in our society.

Hammering hot welds is done with oxyacetylene welding. It is not suitable for 
mig or wire feed welding as the puddle cools too quickly. 
If you want to undo the distortion caused to the metal by the shrinking effect 
of the weld, grind the weld down on both sides and then hammer on dolly over 
the seam. This stretches the metal and removes the distortion. Only hammer on 
the weld line and 1/4 inch above and below!

My buddy has been taking serious baking classes at the local tech 
college (he is a retired doctor and loves baking though they wanted him 
to take an English test to make sure he could communicate well enough to 
learn) and tells me that it is free once you hit 60 years on your 
meter.  I recently did that (HTF did that happen) so was thinking to 
go learn welding since it costs nothing but time and I think a materials 
fee.  They have a whole sequence to get a certificate but I was thinking 
that maybe just a couple of the proper classes would be sufficient?  Or 
just go for it?  I could probably fit it all in around my current 
obligations.

I wanted to let you all be the first to know about my decision and 
announcement.  I have been thinking long and hard about it, and had to 
screw up my courage but with your help and consideration I decided it is 
finally time to let the world know.


I have become transGerman.

Yes, this may surprise everyone, but it is something I have known since 
I was a kid, even before I really knew what German was.  I guess my 
first awakenings started when I watched WW2 movies on TV when I was 
young.  Then Combat! came along in prime time, and my curiosity was 
aroused more by the German soldiers, tanks, guns, half-tracks, and yes, 
old Mercedes staff cars than by Sarge, Little John, etc.  The power and 
strength projected by that machinery resonated with me deep in my soul.  
I cringed when the pilots of 12 O'clock High bombed all that equipment 
but I could not let on. As time went on I was always the German when we 
played war, and willingly allowed myself to be shot and captured by my 
American friends. They all thought it was just playing, but inside I 
knew I really was German and it was not acting for me.  Hogan's Heroes? 
Don't even get me started on that -- Colonel Klink showed me that 
wearing a monocle was OK, even though I only did it in private.


In high school, when I heard a classmate's father actually owned a 
Mercedes-Benz car, you can't imagine the feelings that stirred in my 
heart.  I wanted to go touch it and feel it and run my hands over it but 
it was not to be.  I still could not tell anyone for fear of the 
lingering stigma associated with Germaness, but when another friend 
started taking German language classes I started to feel like there was 
hope.  I was still afraid to open up to anyone about my true self, so 
kept it repressed even to family and friends.


As I got older, and the opportunity arose to actually purchase a 
Mercedes-Benz car of my own, I jumped on it!  The joy I felt was 
tempered by the reality that actually coming out as transGerman would 
alienate friends and neighbors and family, so I kept it quiet still 
(though I think many suspected my true nature).  When I began spending 
hours talking about German cars, researching the fascinating details of 
the different makes and models and years and how to keep them running 
well, I knew it was only a matter of time.


I found this list and found a community of acceptance, which has meant 
so much for me.


When my son needed another car, my first thought was Mercedes!  I could 
live vicariously even more through his experience, though I was not 
trying in any way to recruit him to this lifestyle, though he did need 
to develop an understanding of what it meant.  My daughter learned to 
drive a Mercedes but she is clearly cisAmerican too.


My near-redemption came when my wife indicated that she too wanted a 
Mercedes-Benz automobile, a diesel even!  I knew then that acceptance of 
my true Germaness was at hand!  I'm sure many of you have suspected this 
and I thank you for your understanding and acceptance of my decision to 
make it official!  What really made it right for now was driving the 
ML350 Bluetech this weekend and just knowing it was sooo right!  All 
my fears and apprehensions have evaporated, and I truly feel joy to 
announce officially and with great pride my transGermaning.


I know we can't all be physically together to celebrate this big event 
in my life so I hope that you all can go start your cars today and think 
a bit about what this means to me, and to work hard for full transGerman 
acceptance in our society.

Welding by any means leaves the metal hot, thus more fluid and available to
be shaped via hammer/dolly.

True, wire feed welds cool more quickly, however not instantly. You have
several minutes to improve the shape of the patch, the edge fit, and to
flatten the weld, which relieves stress from weld cooling and will break up
slag, which improves your second pass weld.

When welding sheet metal in the 18 gage or less thickness, fit at the weld
joint is critical. a gap between the two pieces will cause you problems
with the weld, burn through, and make a bad looking joint.

This is why I much prefer the 1/4 inch punch hole, 1/2 in lap joint repair
previously posted. The Cleco clamps hold the patch in position to give
intimate contact which makes a good rosette weld [tack]. Followed by
hammer/dolly to flatten and fit the patch to the hole being repaired even
more closely.

I've used the same tecnique for both gas torch and wire feed welds on panel
repair over the last 30 + years.. In my experience, it works best.. Trying
to join two panels edge to edge takes skill levels far above the beginner
stage. Your mileage may vary..

A guy I know at a CC who was in change of  continuing ed had a sheep 
seller's licence on the wall.  He never sold sheep, but he was one of 
3 people in the state licensed to sell 'em.  He did it as a lark.  A 
few years later the state revoked his license because they figgered 
out he never sold any sheep.



My buddy has been taking serious baking classes at the local tech 
college (he is a retired doctor and loves baking though they wanted 
him to take an English test to make sure he could communicate well 
enough to learn) and tells me that it is free once you hit 60 years 
on your meter.  I recently did that (HTF did that happen) so was 
thinking to go learn welding since it costs nothing but time and I 
think a materials fee.  They have a whole sequence to get a 
certificate but I was thinking that maybe just a couple of the 
proper classes would be sufficient?  Or just go for it?  I could 
probably fit it all in around my current obligations.

make your own certificate.

You could even get it printed on a T shirt.

I suggest your certificate state that you got your training from the 
MBZ Online School of Welding and that it certify that you are

relatively ancient vintage.

It's underway in Port Washington.
I just bought a pair of shoes named after my favorite president for $197 from 
the Ohio outlet store, but they can't ring them up until the sale officially 
starts tomorrow.

That's my third pair of $150 wingtips this year. The others were first quality 
$295 shoes, these are seconds quality $495 shoes.
Now that I have black, grey, and walnut, I suppose I'm set until I get a good 
deal on some wingtip boots or something in burgundy or oxblood.

The sun is coming up, I'm getting out of work.
I tried the Chinese breakfast at the hotel restaurant yesterday. It was some 
kind of rice gruel, like thick oatmeal, with chicken breast, fried wonton 
strips, a century egg which was cut into 8ths radially from the top down and 
some kind of tasty sauce. Everything was good except the century egg which 
turned my stomach although I'm not sure why. I think its a mental thing. I did 
eat most of the egg, and most of the other stuff around it which was delicious. 
I haven't decided what to have today yet, I'm thinking my favorites are the 
Filipino breakfast which has crispy pork and the cinnamon roll french toast.

 car has been trying to call me.  Hmm. I call him back.

 He says the car is running poorly and acting funny.  Not good.  I tell
 him to get back to my house ASAP and he can have his money back, as I’m not
 about to sell a car with issues.  He says OK, and I pace in front of the
 garage waiting for him to return.

 He gets back and I put the OBDII reader on the car.  P0305 - bum ignition
 coil (COPs) on the #5 cylinder.  Dammit.

 “Can you fix it while we wait?”

 Nope.  Here is your money, sorry for the inconvenience.”

 “But I want the car.  My son wants the car.”

 “I don’t sell cars with issues.  I stand behind anything I sell, and if
 I’m not confident it’s good, I am not going to sell it to someone.”

 Long story short, he still wants the car.  It’s a graduation gift for his
 son, and the kid was obviously smitten with it.

 I went out to FLAPS and got a new coil, took me all of five minutes to
 swap (thank goodness it’s one of the ones in front!) and then road tested
 the car on surface streets and the interstate without it missing a lick.
 I’m going to send it over to the local stealer to give the once-over
 tomorrow and I’ll go ahead and sell it to him.

 Dang, I felt like to real dick when he brought the car back.  I felt
 worse for his son. I think the guy was so impressed with my honesty that he
 was even more convinced he wanted the car.  I would’t have been able to
 sleep if he had taken it the way it was and chalked things up to experience.

 How do car salesmen do it?  They must not have consciences.

I'm not excited by either one of the TD's, however, I would be very

[MBZ] Today's Cluster

Got the wife’s former 2005 Mazda 6s all gussied up and Martha’ed yesterday.  
Took pictures last night, posted ad on CL and got a flood of responses.

First guy the responds back to me from the inquiries I got says he’ll be right 
over to check the car out.  He sounds nice and solid.  He shows up with son in 
tow, they look the car over, take it for a drive, come back and give me my 
asking price.  Nice.

I’m on the phone with the insurance company canceling the policy on the car, 
and I keep getting these bursts of tone/static/whatever on the phone.  I chalk 
it up the insurance company routing me through a call center in Bangalore to 
speak with “Andy” to determine where to route my call.

I finish up and look at the phone and notice that the guy who bought the car 
has been trying to call me.  Hmm. I call him back.

He says the car is running poorly and acting funny.  Not good.  I tell him to 
get back to my house ASAP and he can have his money back, as I’m not about to 
sell a car with issues.  He says OK, and I pace in front of the garage waiting 
for him to return.

He gets back and I put the OBDII reader on the car.  P0305 - bum ignition coil 
(COPs) on the #5 cylinder.  Dammit.

“Can you fix it while we wait?”

Nope.  Here is your money, sorry for the inconvenience.”

“But I want the car.  My son wants the car.”

“I don’t sell cars with issues.  I stand behind anything I sell, and if I’m not 
confident it’s good, I am not going to sell it to someone.”

Long story short, he still wants the car.  It’s a graduation gift for his son, 
and the kid was obviously smitten with it.

I went out to FLAPS and got a new coil, took me all of five minutes to swap 
(thank goodness it’s one of the ones in front!) and then road tested the car on 
surface streets and the interstate without it missing a lick.  I’m going to 
send it over to the local stealer to give the once-over tomorrow and I’ll go 
ahead and sell it to him.

Dang, I felt like to real dick when he brought the car back.  I felt worse for 
his son. I think the guy was so impressed with my honesty that he was even more 
convinced he wanted the car.  I would’t have been able to sleep if he had taken 
it the way it was and chalked things up to experience.

How do car salesmen do it?  They must not have consciences.

Given the situation, I would have taken the buyer to FLAPS, showed him how to 
replace a coil, and told him to come back if that didn't fix it.
I suspect once they start going, he'll be replacing one or two a year for the 
next 3-5 years.

[MBZ] 124 evapectomy

7 years since my evapectomy and still cooling nicely; did very well on 100-mile 
trip on 95-degree day last Sun, and no bubbles visible in sight glass.  Fingers 
still crossed, though.
