Boy, does that bring back memories! Mine was Ferrari Red.

It has no air filter. I noticed that in the picture of the engine
compartment in the article, but

http://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Giulietta-6.jpg and
http://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Giulietta-8.jpg

show it better.

The owner's letter to the new owner in the last picture says, "The car is
very light, responsive, and an absolute delight to drive." He's right.

He also says, "When driving, the only thing I would look out for is
stopping on a steep uphill grade ..." That is very true, too.

Of course those power supplies don't care. The use switching mode
power supplies - which turn the the incoming AC into filtered DC.
So long as the RMS voltage is approx. correct, the power supply
will have a correct DC voltage for the DC-DC converter.

I have run a number of computers a lot of hours on a couple
different - but all cheap - inverters. It's hard to get nastier
AC than a cheap inverter.

That is what I used to get the primer and ground coat.

The Rustoleum is going to prevent the PPG magic from sticking, somehow. I
might be able to see that. Somehow. The Krylon mistake makes me think the
Rustoleum would not allow it to bond. This makes me think I just wet sand the
heck out of the present coating, maybe to 1000, then do a few cases of
Rustoleum gold.

Since I am working my way to getting Allen looking pretty again, I
decided to talk to the boys at the paint shop. Wesco, who reps PPG
paints.

I thought there was some form of highway robbery associated with body
shops and getting your rig all prettied up. Maybe there is, but the
cost of product is atrocious. There is all manner of “REAL” paint that
needs to be applied, not just whip out your HVLP guns and blast away.
And the amount of paint needed seems excessive, but may not be.

Gold paint, by the gallon, starts at $700, but will be more, “”Fo’
Sho’”. That will give me three coats and just enough for touch up. But
first I need a primer sealer for a few hundred $$. Then some reducers
and other fluids cost more dollars, before I can even shoot three
coats of clear. That needs catalyst for the gallon that will give me
three coats. All this chemical goodness has an entry price of at least
$1600. And that does not include the booth, guns, filters, swabbing
cloths and other product.

The sales rep was nice enough to come out and look the car over. We
chatted about what I had done and what the original paint was like. He
was happy the original coating was in good enough condition, so that I
do not need to strip it all the way to bare metal. Doing the glazing
putty was done passably, so I just need to sand down through the
primer and color I put on, then do all the magical paint application.

Now I have to decide if i call Maaco for their Premier service, or
spend more than that would cost to screw it up myself.

Re: [MBZ] Paint my Benz!

2017-05-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Don't forget mineral spirits and a roller. A foam roller works best although I
had reasonable results with a knap roller, just had to go slower.
If my 240D hadn't been rusty the roller technique would have been reasonable.
As it was the hood I painted was good from 50' or so.

Since I am working my way to getting Allen looking pretty again, I decided to

I thought there was some form of highway robbery associated with body shops and

atrocious. There is all manner of “REAL” paint that needs to be applied, not
just whip out your HVLP guns and blast away. And the amount of paint needed
seems excessive, but may not be.

Gold paint, by the gallon, starts at $700, but will be more, “”Fo’ Sho’”. That
will give me three coats and just enough for touch up. But first I need a
primer sealer for a few hundred $$. Then some reducers and other fluids cost
more dollars, before I can even shoot three coats of clear. That needs
catalyst for the gallon that will give me three coats. All this chemical
goodness has an entry price of at least $1600. And that does not include the
booth, guns, filters, swabbing cloths and other product.

The sales rep was nice enough to come out and look the car over. We chatted
about what I had done and what the original paint was like. He was happy the
original coating was in good enough condition, so that I do not need to strip
it all the way to bare metal. Doing the glazing putty was done passably, so I
just need to sand down through the primer and color I put on, then do all the
magical paint application.

Now I have to decide if i call Maaco for their Premier service, or spend more

When those cars sit more often that not the fuel pumps lock up. You can try
reversing the polarity on the pump back and forth to work it loose. Otherwise
you will need to replace the pumps.

I cracked the lines coming off the injector distributor (whatever it
is called) and got a bit of fuel out of the one to the rear. The
front one goes through something that looks like a filter or
regulator or something, then down to the engine in front, then
another hose comes back up and then towards the tank, I'm thinking
this is the return and the rear one is the supply line. But no fuel
when the switch is on, so I guess either the pump is not pumping or
the filter is clogged. I checked the fuses, there was not one for
the pump but there is a relay, I pulled it and jumped the pins that
supposedly energize the pump but still got no flow. I'll have to
check at the pump to see if it has power and if it is running. I
guess if the filter is clogged nothing will get through anyway.

One of the relays on the fuse block was really hot, I'm wondering if
it is the fuel pump relay and it is sticking. The diagram in the
manual suggests it is a seat adjuster relay, not sure why it would be
drawing lots of power or be so hot unless some motor is not motoring
and the switch is shorted or something.

There is an over voltage protection relay too, not sure what that
protects, will have to check the fuses on it, maybe one is related to
the fuel pump or tranny? Damn wouldn't that be something, a $0.15
fuse keeping the tranny inop...

Unless they ran it till it was completely dry then it was bound to
have some fuel in the tank. The fuel will be in the lines as well
which will be just like the fuel in the tank, which you don't want
getting to the distributor

The Klebster is right on, but if that is the case then nearly
everything crud-wise will be in the filter, so dump it and install a
new one before you do amy more.

If the tank was completely dry as you describe it’s unlikely anything
came off when you filled it, there just might have been some crud in
it that will be caught by the strainer and filter. As fresh fuel sits
in the tank things might start loosening up and floating around,
however. Best to buy a couple of spare filters.

No need to panic at this point.

I put in the battery and a coupla gallons of gas into the tank and
cranked on it for a minute or two a couple times. Got oel pressure

get a new fuel filter tomorrow and try to replace that before

Any other ideas, or just keep cranking? Maybe a coupla gallons more

Its also worth mentioning that somebody will tell you that your laptop might
not like a modified sine wave such that you might get from an inexpensive
generator (IIRC Greg was asking about a Honda which is not an inexpensive

wouldn't work on down to the cheapest Wal-Mart inverter. That includes my

Amperage not a great idea, because most electronics power supplies,
especially the small ones, have a poor power factor.  Billable watts, in
AC, is _not_ just V times A, you also have to multiply in the 0-1 power
factor.

Simplest possible thing to do is use the Kill-A-Watt, which is cheap and
handles the power factor calculations for you.  (By integrating the
instantaneous VA product over the cycles of power.)  It also will sum up
Watt-hours, so you can calculate the effect on your power bill.  Plug your
refrigerator into it for a week, and see what that appliance really costs
you, for example.

Highly recommended.  I have two of them.

Depends hugely on the laptop. My Macbook Pro 15" has I think an 85w power

Anyone know how to determine power consumption on a Win7 machine?  Is there a
built-in software that does that, or do I need to install something?

I'd like to get a general idea of overall power usage, but it would be nice to
drill down a bit further to see how much is display, hard drive, etc.

If the tank was completely dry as you describe it’s unlikely anything came off
when you filled it, there just might have been some crud in it that will be
caught by the strainer and filter. As fresh fuel sits in the tank things might
start loosening up and floating around, however. Best to buy a couple of spare
filters.

No need to panic at this point.

Re: [MBZ] OT laptop power consumption

2017-05-01 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

A few days ago I decided I needed to know whether my 2KW Honda genset would
provide enough juice to keep the fridge and freezer going if Kim sent us an
EMP. I googled and found that it would, and that a laptop uses 20-25W.

Of course an EMP would likely kill the Honda anyway.

Anyone know how to determine power consumption on a Win7 machine? Is there a
built-in software that does that, or do I need to install something?

I'd like to get a general idea of overall power usage, but it would be nice to
drill down a bit further to see how much is display, hard drive, etc.

Re: [MBZ] No love for an '83 Eldorado

2017-05-01 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I know a guy who's settling his brother's estate.
One of the few remaining cars is a fully restored Toronado.
"Is that a 1966 or one of the big Caddyfied ones?"
"Neither, it's one of the last ones they made"

I didn't think to ask what he was hoping to get for it.
Mitch.

Yes, the W126 window motors are wired directly to the switch. You chose wisely
by removing the motor in situ. That's what I had to do when I replaced the

Re: [MBZ] Resurrecting POSEL -- getting it to light off

2017-05-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Since I didn't get the car started I worked on the LR window, which was
down and wouldn't move. Looked like the PO had started to take it apart
and gave up. Having considerable experience in windows I got it apart
right quick and saw a busted plastic slide. I fortunately had one (2
actually, I buggered one trying to peen the post) so got the regulator
out (and for some reason the motors don't have a connector, they are
wired directly to the switch, and getting the wire off involves taking
the switch apart, no thanks, so just removed the motor from the
regulator) and the slide put on, got it put back and window works!
Yay! Accomplishment for the day!

I have some cleaning to do, and it is actually pretty clean inside, and
assuming I get it running, and diagnose the tranny issue and deal with
that, this is a very nice car, looks to have been pretty well taken care of.

Re: [MBZ] OT laptop power consumption

2017-05-01 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Or, if you already have a clamp on type ammeter, there is an accessory
that you can get that essentially splits the lines so that you can
measure the one side. (or you could easily make one by taking an
extension cord and splitting it down the seam so that you can clamp on
to only the one half of it) That will tell you the amperage draw and
permit you to calculate the wattage being used.

Anyone know how to determine power consumption on a Win7 machine? Is there

a built-in software that does that, or do I need to install something?

I'd like to get a general idea of overall power usage, but it would be nice
to drill down a bit further to see how much is display, hard drive, etc.

For those of you far enough south that you don't swap to winter tires
and rims, it might be a good idea to pull the wheels and have a look at
the brakes.

I put the summer wheels and tires back on the Civic and the Accord this
weekend. The Civic looked fine. 3 out of 4 wheels on the Accord looked
good. The left rear did not. The brake pads were sticking and not
sliding back and forth as they ought to. The result is pads worn
unevenly, and a rotor showing signs of corrosion. I had to knock the
pads out with a hammer. I ground the tabs a bit to give them some
clearance and put them back in for now but will get new pads and at
least one rotor. Rotors and pads were new about 18 months ago and would
not have more than 10 to 15 K miles on them.

If I had not been swapping wheels, I likely would not have found this
for a while. It is my wife's car and I rarely drive it. She has not
commented on the quality of the braking or any odd noises. I rode with
her to dinner on Friday evening and I did not hear anything either so we
had no real reason to be concerned about it.

I need to get the Mercedes out. It has been in my son's garage all

Shocking lack of interest in a very clean car that might - within the next

I focus on our local issues, the fools are much more accessible. The

woman who is the County project manager gave an overview of the project,
what to expect, etc. Then of course the POed people in the room started
in on her, at which point the County Council chairman, who is a raging
a**h*** got the mikafone and proceeded to berate the citizens, which Did
Not Go Over Well with many of them, who became quite vociferous in their

So far I've learned that to be a turkey hunter you need to be in the woods
REALLY early, like in your spot by no later than 5:30am. I'm not built for it,
there are morning people and those people are weirdos. Friday I went into the
woods at 6am and for the first time actually saw some turkeys, on the road, to
the hunting site, near houses, where I couldn't shoot them. 15 minutes later
they'd all disappeared.
Just as well, I unloaded and cleaned the shotgun tonight (muzzleloader
remember, its technically not loaded if theres no percussion cap even though
its got powder) and apparently the excitement of seeing turkeys went to my
head, I don't think there was any powder in the gun. After I loaded I started
to walk off on Friday morning the shot poured back out of the barrel,
apparently I had either an undersized over-shot wad or I hadn't seated it well
enough. Either when that happened the powder also got out or I had neglected to
put any in. I seem to remember measuring it out but...
I finally got some little plastic bottles to put individual charges of powder
and shot (3 dram of powder, 1 1/4oz of shot) so that'll help me remember in the
future.
So anyway, learning lots. Got some 16ga wads and Monday hit the range to try
them out, its nice to be able to trust that the wads will hold everything where
its supposed to be. I'll probably make a video this summer, there aren't that
many muzzleloading shotgun videos on YouTube that are any good...

Re: [MBZ] No love for an '83 Eldorado

Surely you jest. Nobody will ever consider that a classic, unless its as an
example of "Classic American car maker mistakes".A front wheel drive v8 making
less power than most of today's 4 cylinders. I want to puke just looking at it.
A nightmare to own and drive...

Shocking lack of interest in a very clean car that might - within the next
couple decades- be considered a collector's classic.  This was built in the
days when fake wood REALLY looked fake.  Gotta love the tufted leather
seats, though, as well as the near mint condition and low mileage.  What's
the catch?
