Re: [MBZ] Michelin Cross Climate?
Excellent all around tire. Have put them on my two most recent front wheel drive cars, and they do everything pretty darn well. Wet weather, dry handling, even reasonable amounts of snow. If snow is too much for these then it’s because of ground clearance and you want four-wheel-drive anyway Expensive, but cheaper long-term than having two sets of wheels and switching spring and fall. They have the three peak winter rating if that’s important where you are…and totally usable year round. Re: [MBZ] COVID-19 Vaccines and study sizes
Long time without a post! Given info from US FDA on size of phase 3 clinical trials the Pfizer study is a close second to J Phase 3 is the last step to collect data before one could apply for clearance to use in the US: Pfizer: 43.651 (Combined phase 2/3) https://www.fda.gov/media/144416/download (Table Moderna: 30,418 https://www.fda.gov/media/144434/download (Table 1) J/Janssen: 44.325 https://www.fda.gov/media/146217/download (Table 5) While the Pfizer study was a combined phase 2/3 study (w/FDA blessing), phase 2 studies are relatively small- for example, ~2k people in the Moderna Phase 2. If you have good data and are addressing an urgent need you can ask FDA to combine a phase 2 and phase 3. If they like your data, they're likely to give you the green light. While not common, this approach has been used with previous disease states and drugs. I'll echo what was said before- if you can get a shot, take what you can get. [MBZ] USS The Sullivans
Wilton recalled the story of the five Sullivans in WW2: I opened the paper and saw the headline above a photo of five US Navy sailors, the Sullivan brothers, recently lost at sea when their ship, the USS Juneau, was sunk by a Japanese submarine. I had heard about the tragedy on the radio and had heard adults talking about it. When I saw the headline, THEY DIED NOT IN VAIN, I got very excited and said to Daddy, Look, they didn't die! It says here, 'THEY DIED NOT'! Wilton, A Fletcher class destroyer bore the name The Sullivans and if I recall correctly she was the first US Navy ship to be named for more than one person. This ship is part of the Buffalo Naval museum on Lake Erie; my mother in law spent quite a few nights aboard her as part of the Erie County Sea Cadets detachment. Looks like I'm going to have to do this on the 300E 2.6 this week. Eldest son says he's losing about a quart a week. Took a quick look in the engine compartment and as I expected, the timing cover seal is leaking... Fortunately, Tony did this a while before I bought the car, and in the box 'o' parts he gave me there's a partial tube of the good MB sealant. I don't recall ever having done this job, but I probably did at some point in the past. I know getting the cover back on is supposed to be tricky without rolling the seal. Anyone have anything to add? Thanks, That SUCKS. I spent a good amount time and read five or six methods of the best ways to do this to make sure this would never happen again. That was in 2007 and I was never really completely happy with the results. Sorry to hear that you only got seven years of that repair. With that said the sealant you have is also from 2007. Re: [MBZ] Oil (Dino)
Curious as to the list's opinions on regular Dino oil for use in the 1992 300E. I have run two changes of Mobil1 to quiet the lifters, which it has done. I want to go back to a conventional oil for cost reasons. Not a lot of miles being put on it and a starving college student driving it. I am pretty sure that Tony was running conventional oil in it prior to my purchase as well (Tony?) Thanks, Dan Sent from my iPad Hi Dan- I ran M1 20w50 for a time but still had occasional tapping on startup after the car sat for 3-5 days so switched over to Movil Delvac 15w-40 (1300 maybe?) which was much cheaper and easier to consistently find. Prior to M1 I used to use Chevron Delo 400 but after one change the hot (summer stop-and-go hot) oil pressure at idle dropped to .5 bar right after the change I switched to 20w50 M1. I hated throwing away oil with less than 200 miles on it- but w/the M1 saw pretty consistent lowest readings of 1.1-1.2 bar (hot weather/ full AC/stop and go). But M1 supply was spotty at best so switched over to Delvac, with no change in lowest/worst case oil pressure. Now, the car used about 1 quart between changes so for that I'd use any 20w50 or 15w40- I think I gave you whatever I had when you got the car. Glad to hear she's still going- I had an uh oh moment when you sent the email saying one of the cars got totaled out. Did you ever get the AC back up? Re: [MBZ] 92 300E Eating Serpentine Belta?
Dan, Disconcerting to hear- I'd replaced that belt ROUGHLY a year before you bought it. The interesting thing was I'd been getting an occasional squeak so I got a Continental replacement; found that the belt on the car (which had about 30k miles/2 years) showed signs of imminent failure with chunks of individual ribs gone and cracking throughout where ribs were still present. But I'd not seen a belt fail that quickly and that dramatically before. When you mentioned replacement of the belt I'd replaced it sounded strange. I assume you've taken a straightedge to the idler pulley face? The idler assy was replace in the year b/f I bought the car, but that means it's from 2006 or so. You've checked for nicks; I can't think of anything else. Other than re-checking all pulleys to be true- I've had the pulley off the crank, p/s, water pump (and tensioner when I did the head gasket) back about 2007. I think there are a couple of VW Passat owners here- do you need (or think you may need) suspension parts? Re: [MBZ] Poly-V / Serpentine Belt RR
Dan, the belt is probably about a year old or less. Whenever i replaced them on that car all I had to do was remove the two shrouds in the back of the radiator. The shroud assembly is too wide in its entirety to come out with the space given but they made it two part so that it can be removed without removing the radiator or fan. It's a clever design but some care has to be taken to ensure that tangs go where they're supposed to under the radiator as well as for the rotating tabs of the shroud. This will make sense when you see it. You start by pulling the overflow hose retainer out of the one shroud which will unlocks and allows it to rotate. You can then remove the forward part of the shroud after the clips are removed. This leaves enough space for the back part of the shroud to then be removed. With the right combination of sockets the tensioner can be manipulated without removing anything else. However if you've not worked in that space it's hard to imagine the location you need to get to. A small mirror is your friend here. Hope this makes sense. I'm trying to force myself to use my iPad more but frankly think my android phone or laptop are still better choices for the way I use these things. I work a block away from the county central offices, and there is a DMV branch there that's totally dead, even at lunchtime. I asked them how I should deal with the purchase and they really didn't know. The catch-22 regarding temporary tags came up, and the person there admitted that they didn't know how you would go about it, as it's impossible under the current laws to get a temporary tag if the car is not physically in the state or your possession. Duh. I called PA and they were equally clueless. It wasn't until we were at the title place in PA that the offer of a temporary tag even came up. Dan Right... the Pennsylvania bureaucracy is a special kind of confusing. For certain types of title operations you go to private companies; for certain types of drivers license things you can go to private companies, online or the state (in local centers) and for some things you can only go to the state capital by mail. And it's quite common for the people who are actively involved to tell you have to go to somewhere else for something they're responsible for. I knew that temporary tags existed for transit however I thought they used to cost 15 or 20 bucks. It seems someone in the state had a brilliant eureka moment where they thought they could raise revenue and whack out-of-state people by raising the fee by five or six times. And if I was Dan I would've said the heck with it too. Given how dramatically the fee was raised I wonder how many others say the heck with it and if today they collect as much as they used to under the old structure. Now, the forward gears are getting slow to change at times - it has delayed upshifts and yesterday when running at 75 mph on the interstate the tach read 3000rpm - higher than it usually is at that speed IIRC. At the stop light, I ran through the gears and they all worked that time but it seemed to go into top gear very quickly and the accleration was sluggish - like the turbo was not spooling up like normal. Perhaps it was because it shifted into top too early - but the rpm's were in the 2500-3000 range. Anyone know where I can find a curve showing how the turbo comes on line with relation to engine rpm? Would the transmission shifting problems cause the turbo to go into limp home mode? I'm not very familiar with the controls of this engine/tranny - might be a dumb question - after all it's not an electronic transmission. Thoughts? TIA - LarryT 91 300D 2.5T Larry: A few years ago I did a transmission on a '91 300D I had; beyond frictions and seals I also replaced the modulator. However at the time I did not have a proper banjo fitting to measure the operating pressure set by the modulator and was (over)eager to test the transmission. It shifted fine on the jack stands and in my immediate area however upon warming up- about 10 minutes- the transmission started to act as you describe. It is possible that you've got nothing more going on than a wonky modulator. As a quick test you could disconnect the vacuum line going down to the transmission; with no vacuum you should have hard shifting for all gears as well as a hard downshift back into first as you slow to a stop. To know more you'll need a pressure gauge and banjo fitting- IIRC the fitting is the same as used on the top of the thermostat housing on early 300E models. I think there was a hollow bolt needed also but I don't remember the details on that but my dealer had both in stock. The good news is the pressure setting (about 50 PSI from the chart I had) is at the limit for 1/4 PVC tubing so you can use that for the brief amount of time needed for the test. In my experience having BOTH turbo and transmission issues crop up at the same time tends to point to the vacuum system- learned this from Marshall, may he rest in peace! Re: [MBZ] Cold this morning
Changing out the glow plugs on my old '85 300TD did wonders for cold starting. Had almost always run M1 and kept on top of valve adjustments. Before replacement I had to glow twice and crank like Jaime's video; after replacement the car started within one or two revolutions. Kicked myself for not doing it earlier, but the plugs had always tested fine with digital meter I *thought* I could accurately measure down to the range needed for glow plugs. The local dealer here just shuttered their Smart outlet. Positioned across the street from the main MB dealership it was a purpose-built building for Maybach, then used cars, then Smart. Parked it over a piece of cardboard. 30 minutes later I had 2 silver dollar sized spots of motor oil from the rear of the engine. There is no evidence of coolant leaks. The spots were about 6 apart perpendicular to the chassis under the rear of the motor. Almost like it was running down either side of the bell housing. Where does the 2.6 motor leak oil?If it were VW, I'd say rear main seal. (Additional info: 157k miles, auto trans.) The coolant reservoir has enough oil in it to get the milk of magnesia look floating on the surface. I could be wrong, but it looks fairly significant to me (But what do I know? That's why I'm here!) I guess I'll give the guy his grand and take a chance. Now about pulling the slide rail pin(s)? Thanks again. Jim Jim- I've BTDT with the 2.6 in my 300e. The oil leaks you mention are much larger than I'd seen before I did the head gasket on my car. Did you by chance look up higher on the motor? The most common area to see these leaks is on the pass. side towards the rear. If you see that much crud in the reservoir you should also take a careful look at the hoses for deterioration caused by oil. The guide rail pins were easy on my car- I bought a box of hardened M6 bolts from Grainger (p/x 4XY69) and planned to use the bolts with washers to extract the pins but the pins on my car came out easily. Would have been fine with normal grade bolts. One BIG caution though is my recollection that the 2.6 in the 190 is a bear to work on compared to the 300e. And in the 300e one still needs to be very careful as when pulling the head limited clearance in the rear can cause the head to shift forward and put just enough force on one of the rails to crack it. Replacement means pulling the front timing chest and ~ 8 hours time- don't ask me how I know! If asking for a grand I'd offer 500, max. You have much work ahead of you, and this assumes normal wear items like the rear subframe mounts and suspension links have been replaced and everything in the front suspension is 100%. Does the 103 engine have the same serpentine belt tensioner that the 602/603 uses? -- OK Don Pair of W124 300D 2.5 Turbos Don- Over about 50k miles my '92 300E w/2.6 motor goes about 20 MPG mixed highway/city, and up to about 24 with steady state cruise. Unless the 3.0 has much more low end grunt, a 2.5 turbo is a more relaxed driver especially in hilly country. MAY not be a consideration for you! The 103's don't have a knock sensor that I'm aware of and will provide ample audible grumpitude on regular 87 octane and even some 89 that the car doesn't like. As far as I know the 103 did not have the crumbling insulation; my recollection is that was a M104 feature. And if the rear links are bad, go OEM only- lots of junk out there. My car still has functioning ACC, but the defrost pod does leak some and since I have the pass. airbag I don't want to mess with replacement. Also, the recirc diaphragm just failed within the past 2 weeks. Only caveat is the head gasket. Mine was replaced by the PO at 100k miles by a decent shop, head also rebuilt at the time. Your local dealer should have the following pieces: 915036 005100 Hollow Bolt 102 990 00 88 Banjo Bolt If not already spotless clean the area below the modulator around the 12mm pressure port bolt. Remove bolt, checking again that all is clean. Replace with hollow bolt/banjo bolt combo- will also need sealing washers, but I had those. In my case the pressure to aim for was 47psi so I was able to use 1/4 PVC tubing as mine was rated for 50 PSI. I used a water pressure gauge that read to 80 PSI; a bit more coarse that I would have liked but it got the job done. Gauge was checked for accuracy beforehand. It should be noted that all tubing, fittings and the gauge were all new and previously unused. This isn't somewhere I wanted to chance contamination. I used about 8 feet of tubing to have enough to read inside the car. Connected the gauge and confirmed that there were no leaks. Was curious to see that there was very little difference in pressure at 31 MPH or at idle, but I did both. Adjust the modulator by removing the cap, pulling the tee out a bit and rotating- a little rotation goes a long way. I think I replaced the cap between readings as my modulator (new, updated style) leaked vacuum with the cap off- I can't remember if that made a difference on the gauge. I'm writing this up ~ 3 months after the fact so if there are more details needed give me a shout! Modulator pressures for a range of transmissions are below; these are all I have. Note that this method is appropriate for the modulator pressure only: The pump/line pressure can get to 200 PSI which will spectacularly burst PVC tubing of the type I used. Howdy - I am considering Euro headlights for my 91 300D - but I worry about them not having the DOT alignment bumps for the US alignent machines. I'm sure I can align the lights the old fashioned way - a flat wall, some tape and a darkened garage. But I worry about passing the state inspections. Anyone know? Already had that, thanks to my Dad who used to use it on olde Beetle rear hubs. Was the first time I'd used that, though! You will need an assortment of internal/external ring pliers and an assortment of pics (think dental instruments). Used some pipe fittings to compress the ~ 16 springs that are part of the front pump. While this was all on a 722.4xx box I don't think the .3xx is much different, other than in how the governor locking mechanism works- a rotating paw in the .3xx, an internal clip on the .4xx There are special tools to establish proper gaps in each of the clutch packs. The new friction discs are a set thickness but you set the exact gap by replacing the steels- these are available in variable thicknesses. On mine the B3 discs (reverse) were the most worn. In that set there was perceptable wear in the steels- of the total increase in gap of the whole set about 15% was due to wear of the steels. But since there was no excessive discoloration of the steel I reused them. My thought was that OK this time the tranny may only go another 200k instead of the 300k it went the first time. And there was a differance- reverse took about a half second to engage instead of being nearly instantaneous. But given that it USED to take 3-5 seconds I was OK with that! There is a very nice spring compressor that you can buy which looks really handy. Yes, the 722.4 and .3 are very similar. They are covered in the same ASTG rebuild manual that I bought... http://www.atsg.biz/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=actioncategory=EIMPkeywords=allpricecode=passsubnum= So, you obviously rebuilt a 722.4 - did you have any trans rebuilding experience before you did it? Did you use a manual to guide you through? If so, which one? It's amazing that the clutch disks last as long as they do. Now that I have a bit of a clue how the automatic trans works, I've changed my view on them a bit. They don't really break at 200,000 miles the wear pieces just wear out. Of course, the hard parts can break, but that is not usually the case, it seems. Chris- This was my first. I'd gone through the service literature a few times and found it most helpful. Other than that it was basic follow the directions, document anything special, bag parts/assemblies from like areas and document where those were (writing notes in the directions)- pretty basic stuff. Get lots of little containers to sequester parts. Use a digital camera to take lots of pictures through the teardown. In my case I use the top of a folding table covered with three layers of plastic. My only wish is that the table had a lip to contain the fluid you WILL lose- no matter what you do you'll still have ~ a half quart inside the box. You'll need lots of rags, preferably lint-free ones. I got away with paper towels, but cleaned the inside of the case with rags and pieces with rags (not paper towels) on reassembly. I found and used a tub of transmission assembly lube, which being quite viscous was quite useful in certain areas where o-rings etc might have wanted to move about a bit. Also VERY useful when mating the valve body back into the box. Other than dropping the whole valve body (keep track of which bolts go where) I didn't do any further disassembly; figured 1) it didn't have issues before; 2) there are a whole MESS of parts, balls, pins, springs etc to cause grief given half a chance and 3) if there was a problem, I can quite easily get the body back out. I deliberately did the transmission on a weekend the family was out of town for a weekend so I could focus, concntrate and take my time. But overall it was straightforward. If you've tackled something like ball joints where you need to assemble plumbing fittings to press in the joint, you've got a good head start on the kinds of things you'll need to get creative on. While I'd always love an excuse for more tools, most of the special tools for the transmission would not be terribly useful otherwise. I really was amazed at how little wear there was. Even on the B3 brake assembly, at least two of the friction discs still had visible imprinted ink on them. Only two were significantly worn. After everything is back in you'll need to dial in the modulator; there is a MB gauge set for this but you can also use a banjo bolt used on some M103 thermostat housings as a purge fitting; this fitting, some 1/4 PVC (nprmally rated to 50 PSI, right around where you need to be) and an accurate gauge will help you dial in the pressures. I don't know what to think, so I have been putting in 91 (premium) about every other tank. I talked to one of the techs at the dealership I worked at and he said that if the octane is too low and it starts to ping, the knock sensor will catch it and it will retard the timing slightly to compensate for it. So, it is possible that I might have less power with 87 than with 91. I don't really know what to think. In the past (especially in my 90 300SEL), I thought I could tell a difference when I put in 87 rather than 91. Maybe I was just imagining it. Donald H. Subject: Re: [MBZ] Premium v. Regular Your poor m103 with a 9 or 10 :1 CR, no wonder it is pinging! An no, there is not a knock sensor on that motor (at least the early ones). They will ping until they crack a ring and melt a piston. Look at the m100 (6.3) rebuild pictures on my website. That is what a lean mixture and advanced timing will do for you. Not much different than running crap fuel in a high compression motor. In the end one always pays... sooner (good fuel) or later ($$$ to your mechanic and parts dealer). If you can't afford to feed your MB good fuel, you should be driving a Toyota or Honda. Mathieu www.oldworldauto.com Mathieu- My point to the original poster was that I didn't think the M103 had knock sensors so don't rely on a component that isn't there to save your bacon. My car did get 87, once. It was the only option at one point after hurricane this or that ~ 2 years ago. I know my motor started at ~ 9.2:1 and has probably had the head shaved so is a bit higher than that. That coupled with no knock sensor and a dislike for even 89 octane has taught me all I need to know. In case anyone believes laptops and such can interfere with flight controls: QANTAS DIVE TRACED TO COMPUTER GLITCH The abrupt dive of a Qantas A330-300 last week that injured scores of passengers wasn't caused by a passenger's electronic device, but by an internal breakdown in the Airbus's flight-control computer system, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau said on Tuesday. The aircraft was flying at FL 370 en route from Singapore to Perth when the Inertial Reference System malfunctioned, which resulted in the autopilot automatically disconnecting, the ATSB said. However, the faulty unit continued to feed false information to the flight-control computers, which even with autopilot off, still command the control surfaces. Very high, random and incorrect values of the angle of attack led the computers to command a nose-down aircraft movement. The crew was able to recover within seconds, with a maximum altitude loss of 650 feet and a maximum pitch down of about 8.5 degrees, the ATSB said. Airbus told the ATSB it has never heard of a similar malfunction, but all operators of aircraft that use the system have been informed of the incident and provided guidance for a crew response to minimize the effect of any similar failure. The ATSB said its investigation is continuing. RLE Hope the next similar Airbus glitch doesn't occur at 600 ft AGL. Re: [MBZ] OT - Now SST's - was B-58
If I remember correctly the Russians actually put them in scheduled service inside the USSR for a while. They were retired because they burned too much fuel -- took a full 30 min of afterburner at full reheat to get up to altitude and speed, and that shortened the range too much (along with the usual Russian airplane maintenance, etc). The TU is pretty snaz for 1968 -- variable pitch turbofan with duct burning reheat, and I believe variable pitch compressor first stage, too. If the Ruskies could every keep their aircraft stuck together and used rational tactics, they'd beat the pants off of us. Good thing is that's not likely to change! The Georgians shot down at least one Backfire bomber and a couple top of the line fighters last week. Peter Peter, If *I* remember correctly the Concordski burned so much fuel b/c it had to run reheat to stay over Mach 1. If you compare the design of the wings, the Concorde was more complex and that was the reason I recall for better fuel efficiency. Of course, efficiency here is ENTIRELY relative. One story I read was that the Tu-144 was used to haul mail for the proletariat at one point. Its tight but I got all the bolts out with no problems at all. Unbolted torque converter etc, then get ready to slide the tranny back. At this point the damn thing is about out and is just hanging there but there is NO ROOM for it to drop all the way out. You see, instead of the torque converter coming out with the tranny, it stayed where it was and the tranny came out of it. Kaleb- Do what you can to get the TC back into the tranny. put the rear mount back in and pound the TC free through the access hole in the bottom of the block. Might have to rotate the TC 90-120 degrees a few times to do it. I don't think that the trans will drop with the TC in place, and having the mass of the motor free while trying to drop the trans would cause me some concern. WHen I did the rebuild on my 300d 2.5 the converter didn't fight much, but it did try to stay in place. Also FWIW I found loosening the engine mount bolts ~ 3 turns seem to help let the motor tilt a bit more. Well, I think we'll be trying that! I just always figured it'd react like that 250C: badly. Last time I topped off the 16v, I pumped 5 gallons of 93 octane, then finished with 6 gallons of 87, which gave me a mix of about 70% premium. No ping noticed so far. Getting near half a tank again, I'll probably lower the premium content to 60% today and see what happens. Mitch: Have tried that successfully with my 300E, ~ 9 gal 87 and 6 of 93. Re: [MBZ] Mixing 87 and 93 octane
Some stations (Sonoco?) used to have pumps that allowed you to select the exact octane you wanted with a lever. In the background, the pump dispensed a mix of super premium regular based on the lever setting. The 102 octane leaded racing gas I mix with regular works better in my Corvette! Thanks, Tom Hargrave www.kegkits.com 256-656-1924 Tom, The stations here have button selectors that mix 93 and 87 internally to dispense 89. I mix to get 89 or better octane at lower cost. In my area, regular, mid and premium are about 4.09, 4.29 and 4.42, respectively. If the pricing was applied linearly, 89 would not be 4.29 but instead about 4.20 instead. Re: [MBZ] SOS - Sluggo 1985 300CD
Andrew- Having recently been in and through the transmission of my '91 300d I can GUARANTEE there are other parts and seals ready for replacement. Many (but not all) o-rings were so brittle that they broke on removal. At minimum, with the pump out you're 90% of the labor time/cost to go in all the way and replace the clutches and at least examine the bands for condition. On my car (with 306k miles) many of the friction discs still has visible printing on them, but there were three (two in the reverse K2 pack and one in K1) that were breaking down and worn to the point where there were significant delays going into gear (~ 5-7 seconds reverse, 2-3 forward). And this was in a car thats only 17 years old! If your indy is good at these (they're not hard, just have to be precise and work in a clean environment) the $600 differential is a bargain. If the trans needs ANYTHING else it'll be close to $600 just for RR! That said, with the problem you describe if you do go the indy route make sure he is aware of the process to drill out rivets and then tap/replace with screws to renew one of the seals. I can't remember when the change to rivets occurred, so your car may be easier, but if there is an identified pump issue this is one definite area to attend to. With all of that said, did the dealer tell you what the working pressures were at? Tony WIrtel w124 300d, 300e Too late - like I say, the dealer's cappuccino rocks... Hey Tony, As someone who also owns a 91 300D I was happy to hear how your 300 is doing! At 150k miles I can look forward to many more miles of happy motoring! I use Mobil 1 ATF and it shifts so smoothly I cannot feel it unless I really try to detech the shifts. Same for all other systems. Now that I hear you have 300k+ and things are still holding together well it makes me think this might be the best MB we've owned. Sounds like the clutch packs were on the way out in your tranny - One question, how hard would you say the tranny was to rebuild?? Maybe on a scale ot My '91 had low miles when I bought her in Jan 06 at just 99k miles. It just keeps getting better - it's got to be one of my favorite MBs! Thx for the info - Larry T (66 MGB, 74 911, 91 300D) Larry, I've not driven another w124 chassis diesel, but compared to yours I'd guess the shifts on mine are more firm. Personally, I prefer it that way! For degree of difficulty its a matter of keeping clean, having lots of work space that won't mind exposure to ATF, some good documentation and keeping good track of the process. Take your time and keep things organized. I did mine when my wife and kids were out of town for a long weekend and could completely focus on the job. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being 123 chassis brake pads, I'd guess this is a 7? That comes from experience with a bunch of other areas on these cars. In the last year I've done rear subframe mounts, ball joints, spring replacement and head gasket replacement on my M103 car. Compared to things like subframe mounts the transmission could be considered easier, as the work is straightforward, at least as compared to removing the old mounts! Having some decent tools is a great help. If you can't get the transmission out safely nothing else matters! I bought a transmission jack with a tilting table deck to make alignment a non issue and some 6 ton jack stands to get good clearance of the transmission once its down. While I thought the transmission jack would be a one time thing, I've found its great to lift my riding mower and I'm sure I'll find other uses as well. Now back together this car has impressed me. For some reason the 300d rides better than the 300e, and the D is a more relaxed driver with the available torque. I just might sell both and get a newer wagon, who knows. But it sure is an enjoyable car to drive. I also just found out that the ALDA still has the original cap; I think it would be even nicer adjusted ~ 1/2 turn CCW! Re: [MBZ] SDL won't move
You must have lifted your foot -- the engine will race otherwise. If you were coasting, it might have dropped, but with the CC it should have raced the engine. The speedometer dropping to zero might indicate that the drive gear failed, but it should keep reading if the driveline is turning as the car rolled, unless you sheared a flex disk or snapped a pinion gear. You need to examine the driveline for damage, and check to make sure the bolts that hold the torque convertor to the flywheel are intact (although they usually make a racket when they break off). Check the shifter bushings and link to make sure it didn't fall off (it happens) leaving the shift lever unconnected to the transmission. Otherwise, the most likely thing is a sheared pump drive. No pump, no pressure, no pressure no clutch engagement, it's in neutral and will stay there. Peter Peter- I was thinking along the same lines. But this car has a second pump at the rear, so there would still be pressure to operate the transmission although if the torque converter bolt went theres no power to transmit from the engine. When it went wonky did the speedo go to zero immediately or as you slowed to a stop? IF the converter bolts went it should be easy to see, but you need the car up in the air to find out- with the car up and the engine running, the converter would be stationary when viewed from underneath through the same cutout you drain the converter from. When at idle is it at regular idle speed or does it seem slower than usual? Does running the AC really lug it? If not, then the OVP is fine (I'm pretty sure you lose the tach w/o the OPV). Other than that, I can't connect these dots! In any case you'll need to get underneath; would also be good to check for operating and modulator pressures. Another thing (grasping at straws) is perhaps the filter is plugged and theres no fluid being drawn? [MBZ] Transmission modulator replacement
Hello list- Got a replacement modulator for my '91 300D from Rusty: The new modulator requires use of an updated pin (p/n 126 277 93 75) which I got. Question is this: The modulator comes with what looks like a two piece pin, with a pin thats removable from the piston. The required pin 126 277 93 75 is single piece and it APPEARS that the piston piece should be pulled from the modulator. Is this correct? I can't get it out of the bore with reasonable force. Any insights are helpful; I called and Tom didn't have any info for these. Thanks! [MBZ] Transmission modulator questions
Hello list- Got a replacement modulator for my '91 300D from Rusty and have a few questions. 1) This is the updated modulator with a different setting mechanism but NO tee. I assume I need to transfer the tee from old to new? 2) The new modulator leaks down from 20 to 15 vacuum in about 1.5 seconds. It should hold vacuum, no? Also tested my mity vac and while seals aren't perfect my finger at the end of the tube holds from 20 to 15 in about 9 seconds. When the modulator is connected I have to pump vigorously just to get to 20. 3) The new modulator requires use of an updated pin (p/n 126 277 93 75) which I got. [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d/ early results
a HA! With a direct connection between the ALDA and intake, and controlled vacuum applied to the turbo control valve via mity vac in car, the turbo IS alive and the car pulls much better. Limited test to two runs of 5 seconds each and 18 vacuum. Won't know how healthy the car really is until getting things done by the local indy reset to original configuration. Initial thoughts of going the easy way- monitoring EGT and limiting pressure to the ALDA through a regulator- not only brought back the your PISTONS will MELT post but of everything else der Doktor would have said, starting with a stern reminder to consider what I THINK I know vs what the teams of Mercedes engineers who designed the engine ACTUALLY knew when they did the work! Striplin Cox Auto Trader 730-Tulsa FSBO Supervisor THAT is what I was afraid of! Oh well, better me than the indy who put that BB there in the first place. I'd hoped that with bypassing EVERYTHING- going straight from the intake manifold to the ALDA, given that the vacuum transducers had already had vacuum supply cut off- it would work like an olde-fashioned, purely mechanical system. With the looking I didn't see how the electronics would still regulate fuel enrichment, unless theres something integrated into the pump I can't see or elsewhere that I just don't understand. So tonight, a good read of the diagnostics in front of the football game. Too bad I don't have a fireplace anymore and I'm out of scotch... Re: [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d
Tony, Marshall (MHRIP) would have told you to not assume the transmission is bad until you have the engine performing as designed. The power produced by the engine will affect the position of the throttle, hence the shifting firmness and also the shift timing. Some time in the 90s, it became a no-no to tamper with the EGR on the turbo diesels as the computer would know, and lock out the boost, or fuel, somehow. Basically go into non boosted configuration. You should pin that down! Did you change all the fuel filters? Also try driving without the fuel filler cap on the tank, in case it is not venting properly. I have a very nice Garrett from an 87 603 engine, but it is marked TBO 359. Photos available. $275, no core required. Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 152 K miles Jim, I've been playing with this car for about a week here and there, and ya know after being on this and the R/E list for some time now I've caught myself thinking a bunch of times don't assume; think it through- what would Marshall say here with what I have (or DON'T have) in front of me? Last weekend when I was playing with this the thought came to mind that Marshall would know what to do here, and I instinctively thought to post and ask. But since we haven't heard much, I assumed that he was dealing with something more important with some sense that it wasn't good. But we have his example of being a teacher, of methodically assessing and evaluating a problem to a logical conclusion, at least most of the time. And we will still miss him. Anyway, on the transmission: There can be 4-5 seconds delay to get to reverse, and even then I've sensed a slight slip once. When in drive I don't get the slamming I think I should with the vacuum disconnected- shifts are firmer, but probably not as firm as they should be. Also the info I have is that at 305k miles the transmission has never been out of the car. [MBZ] No boost in '91 300d
I've got the 300d home and found that the transmission needs a rebuild as expected, but also that I don't have boost. What I know: - Tracing vacuum diagrams I found that the EGR and recirc flap control have already been BB'ed at the vacuum source - Turbo seems to turn freely. Some oil in the intake but nothing big. - Putting pressure gauge in line between intake and ALDA see about 3 PSI, max. - With pressure to ALDA on acceleration (5-10 PSI) there isn't a jump in power from expected fuel enrichment - Putting a line direct from intake to ALDA doesn't help (something that worked on another car) - Applying pressure to the ALDA shows minimal leakage - EGR has a plate covering the port - Turbo overpressure rod moves freely - Car doe not appear to have a cat/trap in the exhaust system - OVP is OK This car has a LOT more going on than the last car I had a no-boost problem with. On that, a 300sdl, jumping a failed switchover valve fixed it. This car has at least 2 more vacuum/pressure control pots, a mass air flow sensor, and a boost sensor near the battery. I'm not familiar with any of these, and the service CD's are at best spotty with coverage. My questions: - With the added systems is there an electrical element added to the injection pump that would prevent enrichment when jumpering the intake to ALDA? - Does anyone have a used Garrett TB025 turbo if mine proves bad - Anywhere else I should be looking? In my area that money will get you a decent 1-2 year older E class , but understandably a 4 door sedan doesn't have the same appeal! The ones I've seen have all screamed cheap. What makes you think it has level control? If you are talking about the tank under the hood, that is for the ASD. These did not have level control, only the 560 did (US cars). Oops. Re: [MBZ] New refrigerant
I'm guessing the patent on 134 runs out about then. The deal about R-12 was that Dupont could no longer control the world supply, and therefore prices for R-12, so we had to figure out a way to get rid of it. Dupont owns the 134 patent. Here we go again. As said patent issues for R-12 and -134a are urban legends stuff. By the cynic wonders how someone might figure how to modify CO2 (or combo with something else) to make THAT patentable and then the lobbyists make sure that's the only permitted blend. Also: With all the trouble with using circulating 120 bar CO2 as a fluid why not just go and compress AIR, dump heat under expansion, and use THAT?
