I found chickens were a great solution. I used a push mower on the tiny patch of grass and found it exceedingly swift job done. The chickens roamed the yard and kept weeds and bugs in check in my fevered mind. Had the push mower out once a month at most. Then, I went a season without hens. I used to work along the tracks by the Amtrak office. There were a number of trains sitting on side rails chugging away day and night with nobody onboard. Upon occasion one would be sitting and not running. It was entertaining when they tried to light it off. Always a summer event. Massive Delta engines would sound as if somehow they used a howitzer shell to kickstart rotation. Must have had APU that slowly spun the shafts up, compressing air and injecting fuel and all the while this thing is farting like a mexican giant with belching black clouds out the stack until it would light, but still had the shaking and belch/fart staccato for five minutes until the engine was warmed up. Then it sat puffing/purring along for a few days. At least I thought it was the same engine/train when I showed up to work the next day. There is one shipper in AK that retrofit their fleet with massive LNG tanks. They shuttle between WA and AK, as well as head out to HI in these boats. It is the Green thing to do. I wonder if they could swap over to H fuel at a later date. Euro rail is electric. Not a small enough area to allow USA to do that. Take too much copper, and the miscreants would be constantly ripping the wires out. I was reading up on the energy disaster in UK this morning. Big huzzahs for the increase in plug in cars, while much rending of tunic over the increase in home heating and electric costs. Many energy companies went into receivership when cost to get fuel outpaced revenues and customers got tossed into another provider with jacked up pricing. Elected leadership is pondering giving away more money as well as reducing tax on energy in an attempt to lower the curve of inflationary costs. I tried to reconcile the mass increase in energy cost (electric) with forcing plug in cars and inability to provide power when consumers reduce NG use and increase plug in heaters to balance their bills Clay > On Jan 6, 2022, at 11:56 AM, Rick Knoble via Mercedes > wrote: > > Thorium reactors and upgrade (and hardening) of the US electric grid would be > an answer. Temps this week hover around 0*F in ANC. The carpet installers are using the garage to prep so the cars are out on the street. I tried to move one that had sat overnight to put it in the driveway. Maybe 30 hour cold soaked and that poor battery was nearly incapable of spinning it over. Like a no glow start on an OM615. Their opinions do not conform to my experience. I had the OM603 SDL running at 80 mph through MT on I-90 and I-94 to cross the state with no issue, other than a 3am blizzard that was tossing other cars into the median and ditches. The OM617 in the SD only got lead footed to 80 for long stretches on I-5 for about 3 hours. Steady and no runaway. The OM606na would run at those speeds for 10 hours at a stretch, tank to tank. Even the W220 on 24 slogs at 85pmh had no issues… only gasser benz I can speak to. The OM615 was ok blasting along at 70mph all day long and held 84mph for many minutes (floored) until I chickened out and let up. None unstable at top speeds. Re: [MBZ] OT - Home Interior Finish Issue
I purchased a home with sheet panels over unfinished drywall. No adhesive used, not much beyond mud over drywall nail heads. We pulled it all off/down (ceiling got paneled) removed trim (it was unfinished and low grade) and unhooked the baseboard heaters, as well as the odd partitioning wall that divided the space into a pair of 8x10 alcoves (it pretended to be closets). The floor was asbestos tile. The solutions was to mud and tape all the old sheetrock to seal it from air leakage, then to hang ¼ inch on the walls and ½ inch on the ceiling using screws. Mud and tape with a full skim finish coat over all the wallboard. We kept the electric boxes, replaced the sockets and used longer screws to secure them. The ceiling got an extender to the box and hung a new fixture. The floor we laid parquet over asbestos (GIANT PITA) after rolling paint on the ceiling and walls. I prepainted the trim bits and FiL played finish carpenter since he had tools. The room was neither plumb nor square but the molding hid the worst of it. Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] USPS
In the early 80’s I stood the test to be a carrier. At the time pay would have been great ($10.hr) and the test simple. My fellows in the room were a motley crew of ESL and high school grads, along with a few veterans. I opted to continue higher education over putting in marathon strolls in rain. At the time the postmaster at the local had high volume and competent crew. By the time I returned to the zip code a few years later it was bedlam and equal opportunity hires behind the counter. My carrier was one of the guys I took the test with, who became the postmaster around 2012. Went from a nice guy to a power hungry jerk who yelled at me when I had issues with the replacement carriers who no longer spoke english or knew how to deliver or pick up mail. The job is not an easy one. There was a neighbor a few blocks over who transitioned from working the state liquor store to carrier when the citizens voted to disband the bottle shoppes. He dropped 60 pounds and worked himself to the bones. Finally got a decent route after five years of busting his backend. Last I talked to him he was not the happy fellow I had known. Stressed out, hitting the bottle and pretty much screaming about Amazon having screwed over USPS because he had to get their junk delivered even if it meant he had to skip the people at end of his route and hope to get their mail delivered in the next day or three. GWN seems to run a dedicated Amazon route for boxes, while the carrier has to handle anything that fits in the mailbox. I have not met the carrier, but the way he plays at Mario Andretti, I doubt I will. Re: [MBZ] What Could Possibly Be Wrong With This?
Grand touring, so not a sports car, but a joy to drive. I compare it to the OM606 w124, an almost sporty sedan with restrained power. New seats makes for easy two tank trips (450-500 mile) with no saddle soreness. Soft top is expensive to renew, so that is a large plus. Both indicate to me care has been taken to keep the car in good fettle. Paint/clear is a pain, but a good shop could do spot remedy, as the hood and trunk could be removed to get the work done. The probability of coming out with a great roadster with minimal outlay is good. Downside is that R107 values peaked around the end of 2019. Seller may have priced this taking into account the market for them is shrinking and he needs dental work over finding the “right” buyer. I sold my SL this past June for over $7k. 1973 with 215k on the clock, factory two tone green on green, returned to mostly factory spec. but needing more than this fellow is selling his SL. I would be a serious buyer if I had opportunity and wanted a top down cruising toy. They have great cabin heat for winter trips and you can go top down for spring and autumn. Not sure about summers, as you need loads of sunblock and high speeds to keep cool. AC would not overcome heat and it is overly expensive to rebuild the system to bother. Jim outlined the salient issues with this model. Give it the same level of scrutiny you would any other 35 year old car. Battery is cheap, tires, if those are 15” bundts are reasonable. Getting V rated 14in are not cheap (vredstein $280). I think I went with H rated General Altimax for around $110, thought the BF Goodrich were on the list. Do the same in depth scrutiny you would give any other benz of that age. There could be rust in footwells below carpet and under the parcel shelf. The cars are an amalgamation of w114/116 for the most part, but the 380 might have upgrades out of the 126 bin. An 85 should be pretty bullet proof as to issues, not as desirable as a 560SL, but minus the electronic bells and whistles that make for expensive updates. I would get this if I had a place to keep it and time to drive it in AK. No order for take away in over two years, somebody may have done delivery prior to that. I think last one I did myself was for a pizza in 2011. The plague hit while in GWN. Still no delivered food, but SWMBA wanted to assist the local small business early in the event, so sat in the car outside a few venues one weekend, while the employee carefully deposited the bagged meal on a chair outside the place. Re: [MBZ] OT - Reboot Your Aircraft
Amtrak Empire Builder seems to run on windows software. The stop in Spokane WA is where the cars decouple, with the observation car going through the Columbia River Gorge (in the DARK) scenic area to PDX, while the rest of the train continues to SEA. Except, most of the time the engine, at midnight, have to be rebooted endlessly. Used to have a “spare” engine on hand that could swap out, but now the two step is to keep on rebooting until the BNSF locomotive and engineer can be roused from sleep and made to haul the thing the rest of the way, four or more hours late. I would not be entertained to find something that would fall out of the sky needing reboot mid-flight. The same sort of issues I had when I did a jetted tub install in a 90 year old house. It had the original tub on the main floor which was good for small kids, but cramped for me. I thought a jetted tub to make two bathrooms in the house would have seen more usage. Turned out the shower got daily use, the tub portion got regular car carpet cleanings, and I got around one bath each year. Figured I would not be using a big tub much more than that going forward. Hard to rig them up for gerontologic use, since showers work better for washing anyway. Also reduces the need for large or many water heaters. [MBZ] OT - Master bathtub
I am taking a very slow train to learning residential architecture the autodidact way. This is part of the plan to be able to design/build our retirement abode. I have been looking over/researching home plans, homes currently for sale nationwide, and other means of idea gathering. What strikes me is that at a certain market level, the massive master bathtub shows up. Intrusively in most cases, taking up large portions of the space, as if these things should be the center of attention. I am old school and a bathtub has something a home needed, but was not a form of trophy to be put on display, nor was it used regularly, unless it were to drown children, or at least wash them. Showers were for real people. This being said, I do enjoy the occasional deep soak with an engaging tome and tumbler of aged whiskey. My inquiry of the group — does this position of prominence in a bathroom need to be followed? If you have said trophy tub in your home, does it get used with such regularity that it continues to earn it’s place of prominence? I am thinking were I to be required to have a tub installed, that it would be tucked out of the way so that other things could profit more from the space thus vacated. I am also confused as to just how much usage the sit down vanity space for enhancement of the female occupant takes place. I see them abundantly in more prosperous homes. It just seems that this is an appurtenance of long ago Hollywood dreams. The thing that my grandmothers would have actually put to use to apply make up, brush and set hair styling, and to deconstruct themselves at the end of the day, prior to installing the face putty for sleeping time and filling their head with giant curlers. If you have one, is anybody sitting there using it, or does it gather stray clothing, terry cloth, and schmutz? Neither my mother, aunt, sisters or in-lawed, wife, nor cousins have or used these things. Re: [MBZ] With all this talk of retirement vehicles...
Depends on how fast you want to drive. SWMBA made the trip up from SEA with #1 boy as co-driver. I think they stopped every night. August, so still some late light, but not much past 8pm. Took them five days one way. She made another transit down AlCan with her mutt. A week with camping along the roadway in June, so left with around 20 hours of daylight, arriving to 18 hours. Heading south took a week. Driving back, she took five days to Prince Rupert, took the AK ferry to Skagway, then along the Klondike Hwy to Whitehorse and back onto AlCan, for another two days before getting back to ANC. The drive from ANC to FAI is around 800 miles round trip. From FAI to Deadhorse is another 400, oneway. Roundtrip in a day seems reasonable. Were I driving up from the lower 48, I would go with a well suspended 126 LWB, or a W140 for real lux accommodations. The SDL would handle to unpaved sections of the AlCan without giving you massive back trouble or rump rictus. Not sure how well the W124 would take the beating of pocked gravel road at 50mph for long long stretches. Sir Terry was a master. He could punish the reader mercilessly. It is too bad his Discworld novels did not get better representation on TV. He saw into the future as well In a 1995 interview with Microsoft <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft> co-founder Bill Gates <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates>, Pratchett expressed concern about the potential spread of misinformation <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misinformation>online. Gates disagreed, saying that online authorities would index and check facts and sources in a much more sophisticated way than in print. I really like his Bureau of Sabotage short stories. Premised upon government having become too efficient and steamrolling the rights and needs of the common person for the greater good. Re: [MBZ] Dune
I found it only really begins to make sense after you get through God Emperor, as that tome lays out all the missing background of how the worms work. Dune is pretty much a comment on Iran/Iraq and big oil from 1919-1965 and exploitation by the west. The next books in the series delve into the mystical nature, with God Emperor and the next two trying to tie it up in a neat bow. The Brian Herbert books REALLY delve into the nuts and bolt and expand the universe filling in nooks and crannies you can only guess at their import in his father’s writing. clay I have no pronouns please do not refer to me. > On Nov 2, 2021, at 7:14 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes > wrote: > > I think I will have to read the book now. Re: [MBZ] Renting a Car Trailer from Uhaul.
We ran into the same troubles in SEA this year. All the trailers were sitting in MT or at least 500 miles east of town. In April the reservations from Feb had still not been filled. One shop told me it would be less expensive to rent a truck and trailer out of Billings and drive back to SEA, then go back east to ND, than it would to find a trailer or truck on the ground for a one way SEA to ND. Re: [MBZ] Rare car great color 1974 Mercedes Benz 450 SLC - $15, 000
I like it. Good option for GNW where it has been snowing all day. Head liner is probably less to make good than soft top. Carpet and leather are NLA, but a good upholstery shop can fab close enough. The asking price is on the VERY high side if there are issues. I would expect fully sorted Djet, new injectors, all new rubber bits in drive line and seals. Absolutely no rust at all anywhere. Suspension updated in the past five years with new tires. Clay inter urinas et faeces nascimur > On Oct 14, 2021, at 11:10 AM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes > wrote: > > Moss green. Re: [MBZ] Okay Deal
Having owned that vintage SL, there are too few photos to be able to give a yea or nay. Priced as if there is a long list of issues to address.
