I had a '94 E420 with the M119 and, yes, it was great fun.

Re: [MBZ] 400E

2023-03-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Electronic Throttle Actuator. Basically there’s some complicated electronic
bits inside the throttle body that take signals from the ECU and the
Acceleration Slip Reduction (I think that’s the right words) sensors and
modulates the throttle to prevent wheel spin among other things. There’s
probably a lot more going on than that simple explanation but that’s basically
how it works. I think all (or most of) the 500Es and 400Es had ASR so required
this particular ETA.

I Will be excited to actually try it out. A V8 in a 124 is great fun when
running properly from what I’m told. I might need to replace the ignition
bits, distributors and wiring, as it looks like there are cheepchinee bits in
there now but I’m hoping it will be good enough to have a go.

These were very special cars, like the 500E, built in collaboration with
Porsche to fit a V8 in a modified (widened) 124 chassis. It’s actually a 4.2L
M119 engine later called the E420. The 500Es were built at a Porsche factory
because they had widened fender flairs that couldn’t fit on the MB assembly
line, the 400E has a standard body so was built at MB factory .

[MBZ] 400E

2023-03-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I pulled the ETA some time ago as the car was running very badly and the ETA
was likely the culprit. I sent it off to this guy Don Roden who rebuilds them.

He called me this morning after he got it and said it was the wrong ETA for the
car, a non-ASR ETA. Plus it was all corroded like it had been in water and not
rebuildable. So it appears at some point someone put the wrong ETA on the car.
The guy I bought it from got it from an estate sale, it had sat for some time,
so maybe the former owner had buggered it up. This guy and his dad were working
on it but decided to move on, they had done some ham handed stuff to the engine
stuff but fortunately didn’t mess it up too bad. Mostly just crap parts. I
replaced all the intake hoses and such with proper parts.

The guy had another ETA in the trunk he had bought thinking maybe this was an
issue. Don told me what the proper part number was and this one was it. So he
said to send him this one for rebuild but I’m thinking I should probably give
it a try first to see if it works so I think I’ll put it on the car and see if
it works. Installing it is a bit of a pain but shouldn’t take too long. So
that’s on my card for the next few days. Would be cool if it works!

Fun times.

You’ll need some stuff

Random orbit variable speed buffer— I got one off Amazon, was not too
much and works great, a kit
Foam pads of different “coarseness” — these are different colors and
used for the different polishing steps, I think some were with the
buffer kit but I also bought more
Buffing and polishing stuff. I got a package of Meguiars that had
clay bars, buffing compound, polish, and finishing wax. These are the
four steps.

Wash the car well. I washed it yesterday so just went over the hood
again and left the soapy water on it. Get the clay bar and start in
on the paint. This thing felt really rough like 300grit sandpaper.
Took quite awhile to get it knocked down. I have a spray bottle of
soapy water too to keep it wet and lubricated. Watch the clay bar to
make sure the crap from the paint isn’t loading it up, you can keep
folding it over. I use linear and circular motions, whatever works.
Keep at it until the paint feels smooth.

Wash off the clay bar stuff and dry off the work area. Get your
coarsest pad and put some dabs of the buffing compound on it. On this
single stage paint I spent quite a bit of time on it. The compound is
not too aggressive so I’m not actually sure how much paint it took
down. The pad didn’t turn black so not much I guess. On clear coat
you’d have to be more careful.

Wipe that stuff off (it dries like wax does) then do the same with
polish and a lighter pad.

Wipe that off then do the final step with the wax and the lightest pad.

This is not a fast process. To do a whole car would take all day esp
if the paint is damaged or grungy. I do bits at a time over different
days. It’s kinda tiring too, even if the machine is doing the work
you have to work it all around.

The results are pretty amazing. The 040 black CL500 came out looking
amazing and this 400E is also going to look really good. The final
finish is really smooth and a lot of imperfections come out. It’s not
a miracle but can really improve the appearance of a car. The wax
step holds up well too as there is not a rough finish under it.

Yes but you have to be more careful not to go through the clear with the first
buffing compound. I have only done 040 black cars so far, that is single-stage
paint so you can go at it pretty aggressively.

Random orbit variable speed buffer— I got one off Amazon, was not too much and
works great, a kit
Foam pads of different “coarseness” — these are different colors and used for
the different polishing steps, I think some were with the buffer kit but I also

Buffing and polishing stuff. I got a package of Meguiars that had clay bars,
buffing compound, polish, and finishing wax. These are the four steps.

Wash the car well. I washed it yesterday so just went over the hood again and
left the soapy water on it. Get the clay bar and start in on the paint. This
thing felt really rough like 300grit sandpaper. Took quite awhile to get it
knocked down. I have a spray bottle of soapy water too to keep it wet and
lubricated. Watch the clay bar to make sure the crap from the paint isn’t
loading it up, you can keep folding it over. I use linear and circular motions,
whatever works. Keep at it until the paint feels smooth.

Wash off the clay bar stuff and dry off the work area. Get your coarsest pad
and put some dabs of the buffing compound on it. On this single stage paint I
spent quite a bit of time on it. The compound is not too aggressive so I’m not
actually sure how much paint it took down. The pad didn’t turn black so not
much I guess. On clear coat you’d have to be more careful.

Wipe that stuff off (it dries like wax does) then do the same with polish and a
lighter pad.

Wipe that off then do the final step with the wax and the lightest pad.

This is not a fast process. To do a whole car would take all day esp if the
paint is damaged or grungy. I do bits at a time over different days. It’s kinda
tiring too, even if the machine is doing the work you have to work it all
around.

The results are pretty amazing. The 040 black CL500 came out looking amazing
and this 400E is also going to look really good. The final finish is really
smooth and a lot of imperfections come out. It’s not a miracle but can really
improve the appearance of a car. The wax step holds up well too as there is not
a rough finish under it.

You’ll need some stuff

Random orbit variable speed buffer— I got one off Amazon, was not too much and
works great, a kit
Foam pads of different “coarseness” — these are different colors and used for
the different polishing steps, I think some were with the buffer kit but I also
bought more
Buffing and polishing stuff.

Not typical - and you often will notice it. The instances where I’ve seen it
are when people do the clay bar treatment without washing the car first, so
there are all sorts of surface contaminants on it that the clay bar picks up.

Clay bar won’t cause any scratches unless you get something nasty embedded in
it and drag it across the paint, but it’s usually a good idea to do it
lengthwise just in case.

It’s when people try compounding by hand (bad idea) where you’ll get visible
scratches usually.

I was wondering about that procedure. Your suggestion makes sense. I didn’t
really see any effect of the clay bar on the actual paint other than taking off
the crusty layer of schmutz. I went all different ways with it, I was wondering
if that was “right.”

I went at it with the compound for awhile so maybe that took down whatever the
bar did.

In any case it came out well.

There are a coupla dings on the door that almost look like bullet hits. They
are rusty. I’ll need to get after those spots soon. I was thinking I might be
able to bang them out from inside then grind out the rust with a dremel or

Re: [MBZ] 400E paint

2022-11-13 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
This is why I LOVE the 040 color code. This is probably the easiest color/paint
scheme on a Mercedes to recover, that is, get back to as close to the original
finish as possible.

That’s not saying the process is easy, as Floyd points out it’s time consuming
and tiring, especially if you do it right like he is. However, once this is
done, maintaining that finish is a lot easier.

This is why I love single stage paint colors. You can take a really awful
looking finish and with a minimum of expense bring it back to the point where
it looks really nice.

And do your clay bar and any other operations that can affect the finish in a
linear motion along the length of the car. You’re scratching the finish under
some circumstances, albeit microscopically. However, by going the length of the
car makes those scratches far less obvious to the eye, especially under bright
light.

Nice job!

[MBZ] 400E work

2022-11-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I put a new throttle cable on today and went to adjust it per the procedure.
This car supposedly has ASR per the build sheet and the idiot light for it is
on. But the ASR actuator stuff on the throttle linkage is not there. Most
curious.

I’m waiting on all the intake manifold hoses and connectors and such. It won’t
idle and is running very rich. I’m hoping that stuff fixes that aspect. The new
throttle cable actually controls the engine speed better, the old one was
broken at the engine end and there was a lock washer to hold it in the lever so
it was not working very well

[MBZ] 400E and 500E

2022-10-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Turns out the 400E and 500E share the same frame mods that were done by Porsche
to fit the M119 but the 500 got the wider body mods and the more powerful
version of the engine. MB then built the 400 in their factory after painting
the white body but Porsche had to build the 500 back at theirs because it
wouldn’t fit on the Benz line. Very interesting cars.

Good vid on the details

I found a whole series of videos by a guy who basically rebuilt everything on
and around the engine so I’m going to dig into those things. Dan has provided
some good insights and linked me to some good forum posts on the issues. I
ordered a new throttle cable which is kinda key as the one on it now is broken
at the engine end. The car runs poorly, just won’t idle and dies. So at least
the engine itself is not buggered, it’s wiring, intake hoses, and the ETA.
Maybe $1k worth of parts and ETA rebuild. So it will be interesting to nip away
at it. I’m gonna try to go pick it up tomorrow or Saturday.

I looked at a lot of the information he has one the car, and the PO has totally
wrong wires on it, which will really screw things up, as well as an ETA that’s
very possibly the incorrect one. These two things alone, combined with the fact
that the car has been sitting can easily cause the isle issue. More likely than
not, the ETA needs to be rebuilt. This can’t be determined until everything is
set to spec in the throttle system first.

EZLs aren’t common failures, and when they are it’s often a binary failure as
in there’s either spark or there’s not.

I’m betting the wiring insulation inside the harness jacket of the ETA has
turned to dust, very common by now. Rarely diagnosed because people don’t

And throttle body.  I will dig more into it after I get it next week.  I
LOBALLED him and we struck a deal at what I think is a reasonable price
given what it will probably need engine-wise.

[MBZ] 400E Fun

2018-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Low key day today…

Put the new “Battery in Trunk” label on the new apparatus box cover.

Put the “Mercedes and AMG prefer Mobil1 Products” label on the fan shroud.

Replaced the lower windshield trim/seal on the right side, as the original was
coming apart. Replaced the seal on the left side part, too.

Installed a used OE window regulator on the left rear door, as the original one
was toast. Motor appeared to be dead as the cable was stuck and wouldn’t move.
I bet the thermal breaker in the motor is just open circuited, but I was too
“meh” to bother taking it apart to check.

Installed a nice used center vent assembly to replace the original, which was
self destructing and no longer working properly.

I still have some other things to do to the car, but they’re all major
undertakings (motor mounts, headliner.) Not sure I’ll take one of them on
tomorrow.

[MBZ] 400E Update

2018-04-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Haven’t one much lately, just driven it a bit to enjoy.

Got a new (used) grille shell installed on Tuesday along with a new apparatus
box cover and center vents. Replaced the driver’s door speaker and sorted the
left rear parcel shelf speaker, and now the Becker system sounds wonderful.

I have a couple of engine mounts I might try and install this weekend, I
haven’t decided yet. I want to replace the headliner as well, but that’s going
to be an undertaking. Need to figure out why the left rear window doesn’t
work, too. Not sure if it’s a switch or motor/regulator issue. I have a spare
regulator and motor on the shelf, so that’s available should I need it.

Filled up the first tank of fuel - 18 mpg. Not bad for just tooling around
town and taking into account some fuel loss from filter changes and other work
I’ve done. I bet I can get it over 20 mpg if I ran most of a tank on the
highway.

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Not presently. I like this car too well to let it go right now. Maybe in the
future when I tire of it, but for now I plan on enjoying it for a while. Nice
to have a solid spare driver, and the youngster is flying the coop shortly, so
I’ll have a good spot to store it once he’s gone.

It still has things it needs, but it’s stuff that can wait and be done at my
leisure.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Catch Up

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Figured out the speaker, and it was just as I suspected.

The crossover capacitor in the smaller high frequency drivers was shorted. I
clipped one end of it to take it out of the circuit and I now have the large
driver working again. Probably wasn’t doing the amp any favors running into a
short, either.

Drove the car to work today, a really nice ride.

I’ll probably do the transmission fluid and filter and the spark plugs this
weekend, and that will wind things down. New windshield on Monday, then all is
well for the most part.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Catch Up

2018-03-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Replaced the fuel pressure regulator a few minutes ago. Old one was definitely
bad - I got fuel out of the hose barb when I took the vacuum line off. I had
inspected this when I got the car, but didn’t catch it probably because the car
hadn’t been running for a while. Also explains why the plug on that intake
runner was sooty, too, a definite giveaway.

Eddie & Tom (Becker Autosound) got me a rebuilt faceplate for my 1432 and it
works great. Now I just have to figure out why the large speaker in the left
rear isn’t working. I can hear the tweeter, but no low frequencies from it so
either there’s a broken connection or the driver is blown. Makes Lakshmi Singh
on NPR sound weird.

I’ve driven the car over 60 miles now and I’ve still got over 3/4 of a tank of
fuel. I’m really interested in finding out what kind of mileage this car gets
with the V8 in it….

Re: [MBZ] 400E Fun -- Costco Michelins

2018-03-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
These Michelins now on the SD are Brit-made so not-quite-yurpeen.

I’m starting to think the left front suspension has gone wonky. I rebuilt the
suspension maybe 4 or 5 years ago and got it aligned. I’m wondering if the
rubber bits in the control arms have squeezed or deteriorated or something
letting the tire wobble a bit which caused the edge wear and belt delamination
at the edges. Or if the eccentric bolt loosened. I vaguely remember they didn’t
get one properly tightened in the initial alignment so I guess that is possible
and the camber is out of whack. That would probably need to be checked in an
alignment.

What was the Czech continental? Barum? Try those. They looked decent,
but I've not had any long enough to determine the long term viability.
I've had poor results with several brands of "high quality" asian tars.
IMHO, anything yurpeen is preferable over asian or US brands.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Fun -- Costco Michelins

2018-03-03 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I called Costco to see if they had Michelin tires to fit and were compatible.
He could get some in the proper size that were some other name but probably
pretty much the same. He asked what car they were for and the conversation got
into some whole other dimension about they had to go on the rear not the front
and a bunch of stuff about the speed ratings and load ratings and what not,
which I knew about from when I bought these tires a few years ago. Anyway he
would have to order them and it would take a week or two and then a bunch of
other extraneous nonsense again about bringing the car in etc. And the
Michelin deal is only for 4 tires and it expires in a day or two and these were
going to be some huge price anyway.

Maybe I should Just buy some of those cheepcheep Asian things. Or I guess I
could check around see if I could find the Michelins somewhere else. What a
PITA.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Fun -- Costco Michelins -- bundts 123/126?

2018-03-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
And there are 14" and 15" bundts. A 15" will fit on a brake made for
14" wheels, but a 14" bundt may not fit on a car that came with 15" out
of the factory.

Bolts always match to the wheel, not the car.

As I recall, alloy and steel are different but all alloy are same. In
addition to different rim width, I think there may be different
offsets for alloys.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Fun -- Costco Michelins

2018-03-02 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Most stores no longer carry the small tires. You can order them online and get
an install at the store. No added fees. THere are issues if you are trying to
put something on that their computer system says is not right. Then you are
not getting them to put tires on.

All the better to get fresh tires with.

A lot of our old 14" cars are low usage, and every month of remaining tire life
helps.

2018-03-02 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
They don’t have stock on the 195/65 15 tires I wanted, either. Not a big deal,
as I’m in no hurry, but from what I can tell my CostCo tire place has a week
backlog or more. No walk in work from the looks of things.

The tires I got for my W210 wagon had to be ordered in, too, but they were on
sister in about three days. I don’t think they have much inventory in the
stores unless it’s a size that’s really common/popular.

I’ll go by and get a pair. Thanks for the heads up.

I asked about 14" tires at our local Costco and they looked at me like I
came from outer space.

Do 123 bundts fit on the 126?

The SD will have 14” tires, correct?

Tell me about the Michelins -- the LF tire on the SD went bad -- really
warn on inside and outside down to cords and the belt separated almost all
around the inside and some on the outside. Kinda weird, like it had run
really low inflation for a long time but it has been aired up OK. I had
only seen the outside edge so was also thinking maybe the camber adjustment
had gone wonky on that side, and was going to get the alignment checked,
but now it looks like something else. Maybe the tire itself went bad, they
are maybe 4 years old, still a lot of tread left. Anyway, I need to get a
coupla tires to replace that one and I guess the other front one too, use
the other one for a spare now.

I'll probably go by Costco tomorrow so can take the tires and see what
they have but if you can fill me in that would be good.

Find somebody that already has one and offer to buy lunch...
We don't have a Costco close enough to make it worth us having a membership...
