I've found the same thing with ox-acetylene welding - though I've only been
welding for 40+ years now, and only with MIG for the last year.

Thanks, Hope you found it useful.

With a bit of practice you can lay down a "stack of dimes" TIG weld with
it.. [OK.. maybe a "lot of practice".. haha.. ]

Pretty TIG welds are a function of hand eye coordination that can only come
from practice.. measured in inches of weld laid down... I've been welding
for 50 years now, and if I don't do it for a while, I lay down a few inches
of ugly before it all comes back together... So, I recommend you weld
often.. go to the metal sales yard and pick up some cut offs for cheap to
just practice on.. often...

I agree with them.

TIG has the control needed to weld thin materials [with welding skills] As
always, aluminum must be super clean at the time of the weld, gas envelop
needs to be managed properly, and condition and shape of tungsten tip in
the torch is critical to control weld puddle size and contamination.

Get it all just right, and you have a sound weld that is to pretty to cover
up.

As it happens, I have one of the Eastwood TIG welders. Picked it up on a
special sale they were having, along with one of their plasma cutters..

It's a very passable TIG unit. It doesn't have anything close to the
"grunt" my Miller 500 amp TIG / Stick welder has...but it has solid copper
transformers and was built 50 yrs ago with an industrial production duty
cycle. So, no "apples to apples" comparison there. The Eastwood does decent
work.. isn't under powered for light work, the arc is stable with little
variation [all good stuff if you are making pretty welds and consistent
penetration.]

In all, I have to say, "It does the job nicely on 220 power." I have not
even bothered to try it on 110... nor would I.

What I'd love to have now is a TIG welder. It seems their prices

Uh, not to be a buzzkill, but 316 stainless would be multiples of the price
of regular steel tubing. Stainless is also not as strong, requiring
different scantlings for the wall thickness and probably different overall
tubing dimensions for stiffness. Add to that the complexity of welding it,
which would require a tig setup, considerable skill, and a dual flowgauge
regulator to back purge. And the fact that you need some excellent drill
bits and a super saw to have any prayer of getting through it. Most stuff
like this would be 304, but in reality for weight and other reasons
aluminum is the way to go. I bought an ACE out of Florida 10,000lb with
stainless surge brakes for the rib and have not regretted it.

If you go regular cold rolled, which you should, wash it out with solvent
and then dump a quart or two of primer inside after it is welded. Flip/tilt
the frame to coat the inside. Make sure there is a way for the water to get
out.

Re: [MBZ] Am I crazy?

2017-07-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
You've touched an another of the drivers, my boat trailer is unique because
I have a sailboat with a swing keel. The combination of the round hull and
the swing keel result in the boat sitting very high on the trialer. There
are two bumpers or supports on the sides that stabilize the boat
side-to-side, and they are about two feet or more above the "floor" of the
trailer, on angle iron welded to the trailer frame. None of the trailers
I've seen for sale have them, so I'll have to have any trailer I purchase
modified with those additions.

My trailer has another unique feature, the tongue can be extended about six
or eight feet for launch, so the back of the two vehicle doesn't end up in
the water. I've yet to see a trailer with that option as well.

I'd really like to find a cheap used trailer with the load capacity for my
boat, and then either pay someone to modify or do it myself.

You can finish it in clear UV resistant epoxy.
The UV resistant part is vital, I made a wooden rack to put an ice chest in
front of the trampoline on my Hobie 16, the regular epoxy I used didn't last
one summer, would have been much better off with ordinary varnish.

Or better yet, start with teak 2x6. I have one, but don't remember how
long it is. at least 16' I think.

Ripped and laminated? Just get the Navy to let you chuck a couple
treated 20' 2x6s in a 8" or larger steam pipe, cap it off, apply steam.
Next morning they will be like cooked spaghetti.

Somewhere I have plans for a wooden boat trailer (and matching
sailboat) in old Popular Science magazines. You were expected to buy
proper plans of course, but a guy could make do for the trailer
anyways from the sketches in the magazine article. IIRC, it had bent
wood rails, spaced at leaf spring width, then bending in towards the
hitch at the front.

IIRC, your boat is pretty light.
2x6 ripped thin enough to bend and laminate are probably adequate, 2x8
would have plenty of margin of safety I'd think.

You'd likely need new springs, galvanized axle, etc, but I bet the entire
package would be quite cheap.

get to build a new one, incorporating all you learned after using the first

I won't be doing much beyond painting it for corrosion control. I did see
in the latest Eastwood flyer a rig for media blasting that uses a pressure
washer, so no dust flying around. That would be pretty cool, maybe I could
do that in my driveway every several years and repaint the trailer to keep
the corrosion in check.

Re: [MBZ] Am I crazy?

2017-07-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I'm sure you could do it, easy enough to get the metal and wheels and
such, and a welder and cutoff saw are about all you need. The only
thing that would be a concern is that most trailers seem to be
hot-dipped galvanized, not sure how you would do that to retard corrosion.

with the battery out of the SDL. Of course he says it runs great
yada yada. My concern is the check engine light does not light when key is on
so bulb is probably out, so I can't tell if it's for a check engine light if I
do go back and start it. As I have said I have wanted one of these as a toy to
mess with. It's a 1st year car but on the plus it has the for 400 plus hp where
as the next year they were tuned down to about 380. Guy wants $2500 but I bet I
can get him down. Car has 150k miles. It's on the "hood" if that tells you
anything but has not been ghettoed out or anything. So am I crazy and should
run away or is it a crazy good deal and I would be crazy to pass?
