[MBZ] Today's Fun

2020-10-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Low level day for the most part. Bled the brake system on the E320 4Matic, so
that’s done. So, so easy with the pressure bleeder. Fronts are a little tough
with the wheels on as the bleeder screws face the inside of the wheel. Much
easier to do with the front wheels off, but I made it work without taking them
off.

E320 wagon had thrown another code a week ago, and I was afraid I was still
dealing the EGR. Seems that the left rear O2 sensor was out of band
occasionally. Ordered a replacement from the Island of Large Wimmen that came
two days early. Nice!

Got under the car after taking it for a drive so the exhaust was hot. Popped
loose with minimal effort (I love Florida cars!!!) and put the new one in and
torqued it down. Hopefully, that will make the brains happy again. While I had
the car in the air I removed the inner wheel well panel on the passenger side.
I’m convinced I have a vacuum leak in the ACC or PSE system I can’t trace down,
so I wanted to check the vacuum reservoir that’s located in this area to see if
it might be leaking. Found about 10 pounds of road detritus, like leaves and
dirt, and cleaned that out. The vacuum reservoir was good and passed a leak
test. Darn.

The rest of the day was spent working on a means of suspending the oldest boy’s
new “canoe” (I think it’s a kayak) from the garage ceiling for storage. Got
some properly rated rope, some swivel pulleys, and a couple of eye bolts to do
the job.

All in all, a pretty productive day.

So I ended up replacing the fuel filter, which was due, along with an air
filter element, which was also due.

Car is now good for many thousands of miles more. Gotta love these W210s, the

Re: [MBZ] Today's Fun

2020-10-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got out from under the car after determining that I don’t need the mounts
replaced. I knew the PO did it (OE mounts, too!) but I wasn’t sure how long
ago. They’re clearly tall enough that there’s nothing to be gained by replacing
them. I did, however, notice that the front sway bar bushings were getting
cracked, so I ordered a pair along with a pair of new links. Under $50 for the
whole shebang from the dealer, a cheap and easy repair.

Maybe I’ll tackle the fuel filter now…

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2020-10-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And yesterday’s, too.

I’ve had a CEL on the 1998 S210 wagon for some time, P0400, which is the EGR or
related stuff. I replaced it for just that issue about 14 months ago, and the
CEL returned maybe 2-3 months ago. With minimal driving and knowing it wasn’t
anything significant, I just let it go.

As the weather has cooled off here relatively speaking, I went out last night
and spent some time poking around. Found the short U-shaped vacuum line between
the manifold connector and pressure transducer at the EGR was split at one end.
This would definitely cause a P0400 error, so I replaced the cracked hose and
reset the computer. It takes two driving cycles for the computer to decide
there’s an issue, so I’ll have to drive it a bit to see if the CEL returns, but
I’m optimistic the problem is solved.

Today I’m going to replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts. The ones
on the car are not original and not in too bod shape, but I have a set of
Lemförder mounts that are taking up space on the shelf so I figure i’ll put
them on. I need to replace the fuel filter, too, so maybe I’ll do that as well.

Those 17mm bolts can be a tight reach, not a lot of room to swing a wrench
and the top bolt is hard to see at all. I use a 3/8 drive ratchet and a
short length of pipe to get more torque. Once you've got them loose, you
may have room to get a universal joint into the mix so you can get a wider
swing and get them out faster.

Washed, clay barred and waxed spouse’s SL500. Got that done and out of the way
by 10:00. Eldest son’s W124 E300D is getting the AC pulled down for an hour to
make sure it’s dry, another 30 minutes capped off to check for leak down, then
it’s getting hit with a can of sealer and charged.

Been sorting out the garage and cleaning the bra a buddy gave me for the W124.
I need to replace some missing sound attenuation panel fasteners on the front
of the W210 wagon, which I’ll probably do after the E300D’s AC is addressed.

Kaleb, did you check to see if those speakers were the right ones? And how’s
about a W124 armrest? Curley - can you send me pictures of your armrest?

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2018-02-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Drove the wagon with its new Bilsteins over to Clearwater and back so I could
pick up my new SKS and drop off some remaining W140 parts I had with an MB
buddy who lived over that way.

Definitely an improvement. While road surface discrepancies were more
noticeable, the “judder” that I often got in the front end when going over a
pothole or really large bump is gone. I was sure this was due to poor or no
damping from the original shocks that were allowing the suspension to rebound
when it shouldn’t be.

Wife was at a work gathering this evening, so I took the opportunity to put a
new door check on the driver’s door. The inner door panel was a little
“floppy” I had noticed when I got the car, so when I picked up the door check
at the dealer I made sure to replenish my supply of the little white plastic
pins that hold the door panels in place.

Surprise! All of the original pins were there. But - the plastic panels they
clip into on the door panel were all broken loose from the inside of the panel.
There are about eight of these plastic panels around the sides and bottom of
the door panel, all glued in place to the inside of the door panel when new.
None of them were glued in place any longer - they were all broken loose of
their glue bonds and just hanging on the door by the plastic pins.

No wonder the door panel was floppy…

So the door panel comes inside and I used up nearly half of the JB Weld I had
on hand to glue all of them back into place. Luckily, the old glue, the
yellowish stuff that looks like hot glue, was still there and acted as a
template for positioning the panels as I put them back into place. Spring
clamps will assure a tight bond as they dry.

Hopefully they’ll hold and I’ll be able to put the panel back on tomorrow
morning.

My adventure was trying to figure out why the SDL hates me.

This has happened before. I got in after she had been sitting for a few weeks.
Figured I should give her legs a stretch. I gave her a glow, then tried to
light off. Everything went dead. No lights, no dash, nothing. All manner of
key turns, and nothing. Drove the other w126. When I got back, I hoped
everything had reset, but it had not. Plugged the charger in and set it on
50amp light off. Everything behaved, and she lit off.

Battery was not dead. A little low on power when hooked to the charger at
1amp. Five hours later, it is all topped up. Maybe I need to chase wires and
see if there is corrosion.

The improvements in tire technology are really quite amazing (or maybe I just
buy better tires now?). In my youth, changing a flat tire was just a normal
part of driving. Not every day, of course, but a few times a year. I have had
a low tire occasionally not a real flat in decades.

Re: [MBZ] Today's fun

2018-01-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Got the tire patched, kid said he found a hole but no object in it.
When I got home I took my new 18" socket extension, ground the corners off the
socket end, crammed a 7/16" 1/2" drive socket onto it and welded it in place.
Now I can run it with the 1/2" drive impact gun.
Then I pounded a 15/16" socket onto the drive on the jack so it can also be
driven with a 1/2" impact gun. I put both of them plus a 1/2" drive ratchet in
the truck. So my Harbor Freight list includes a 1/2" drive extension, probably a
12", a set of 1/2" drive sockets and a breaker bar. That should cover our tire
changing needs. Oh, I need to remember a couple pieces of 2x6 to elevate the
jack...

Come up with something to lower the spare and to crank the jack. Carry
along a few short pieces of 2X6 to put under the jack to raise it to
whatever height works best. You can use a couple to block a wheel too.
Get a socket that fits the lugs and a long breaker bar. The wrench that
came with the truck probably wouldn't be sufficient to loosen or tighten
the lugnuts anyway.

More or less what I was thinking. A 1/2" drive socket set, breaker bar,
ratchet, and speed handle (the crank thing) will get the truck in the air and
the lug nuts off. The 18" 3/8" extension gets the tire down, need to figure out
how to adapt it to the crank thing and it'll work sweet

Come up with something to lower the spare and to crank the jack. Carry
along a few short pieces of 2X6 to put under the jack to raise it to
whatever height works best. You can use a couple to block a wheel too.
Get a socket that fits the lugs and a long breaker bar. The wrench that
came with the truck probably wouldn't be sufficient to loosen or tighten
the lugnuts anyway.

[MBZ] Today's fun

2018-01-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie called me from the side of the road, flat tire on the Dodge. In
retrospect I'm surprised the TPMS wasn't shrieking at her, it did at me later
on.Anyway.I told her to call AAA but she didn't want to wait so I drove out,
fortunately I had some tools in the car for working on the groomer.
Problem: No Dodge tools, ie: no thing to let the spare tire down. Now she calls
AAA, its going to be an hour to an hour and a half. Theres an Autozone in sight
so I went and bought an 18" long 3/8" socket extension. That, inserterted
backwards plus a 3/8" wrench got the tire down.
Next Problem: Well the same problem really, I don't have the tool to work the
jack, fortunately a 24mm socket will kinda fit and do the job.
Next Problem: The jack isn't tall enough to get the spare on. The little jack
from my Jetta was just enough to lift the control arm to get the tire on.
Next Problem: You might have seen this coming, the spare only has 15psi. I
slowly drove to a tire place which was fortunately only a mile away with the
TPMS shrieking to get more air. TPMS still isn't happy, I think the spare isn't
the same diameter as the rest of the tires but we got home okay.
This is the only vehicle that doesn't have cheap Chinese tires, its got General
Grabber AT2s. Must have a nail or something. Fortunately its got lots of
warranty left...

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-12-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I was bored this afternoon after spending the morning doing laundry and
addressing a large pile of papers I needed to file. So I went out into the
garage about 4:00 and put a new fuel filter on the W210 wagon.

I dug through the VMI on the car while I was filing and couldn’t find any
indication of when the filter might have last been replaced, unless it was done
during “B” service at around 134k. So I figured it was about time.

From jacking up the side of the car to putting everything away it took me under
20 minutes. Only negative was that some dealer dummy put screw clamps on the
lines instead of using the nice clippy clamps that are supposed to be there.
How did I know this? The other ends of the lines had the clippy clamps. It
did have an OE (Knecht) filter on it, tristar and MB part number all over it.
Interesting that it had the Knecht logo on it, too.

I might get a handful of the clippy clamps and replace the screw clamps with
the correct ones if I really get bored.

Cranked about four times and it fired up and ran.

Done.

Re: [MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-11-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yesterday I had some car time, so The White Whale got a new thermostat and
new coolant, and I also replaced the lower radiator hose with the much
nicer hose from Wilton's 300D (now both upper and lower radiator hose are
donors).

OM603 thermostat is a pain! It is located on passenger side of the engine,
above the alternator and below the turbo-charger / exhaust manifold. I
wanted to flush the block and heater core, so I installed a forced-open
thermostat first, which probably took me about an hour to figure out how to
get that installed. Due to the "forced open" feature of that T-stat,
combined with the old shrunken rubber seal, it would not stay seated in
either the T-stat housing cover (external piece) nor the block, so I was
working from above and below and going back and forth to figure out just
the right combination of bottom bolt and top bolt tightness so that I could
still fit a screw-driver into the crack to maneuver the T-stat around to
line up the orientation indent. Once that was done, the new T-stat was so
much easier to install, it had a nice big fresh rubber seal that held it in
place in the housing cover.

If I have time, I may change the engine oil and filter today, but more
likely that will be tomorrow.

Thursday night the car got washed for the first time in over a year (it
really IS white!) and then Saturday I had time to wax it. Looking much
much better now.

You don't know dirty. We have had snow and salt and temps around
freezing. My truck is so dirty it is a disgrace but I am not sure it is
worth running it through the carwash as it would likely be dirty again
before I got home.
Maybe take of the first layer of dirt?

Since I decided to take the week off, I have a number of car related
things queued up to do in my leisure time…

Yesterday I replaced the stops on the rear hatch, as the rubber part
of both had deteriorated to the point where the rubber was pretty much
gone. Maybe all of five minutes to do, and my rear hatch now shuts
with a nice “squish” sound as the latch pulls it closed. I’ve noticed
this is a common issue on the sedans as well.

I’m referring to the rubber “wedges” that are on the sides of the
trunk opening of the W210 sedans. There are similar things on the
wagon rear hatch as well, which is what I replaced.

Today was driver’s lower seat (horsehair) pad. Got a new one from
Mercedes this past week, so I had it all ready to go. The seats on the
W210 are probably one of the easiest seats to remove on a Mercedes
that I’ve encountered. Move it back, take out the front bolts. Move it
forward, take out the back bolts. Unplug the connectors in the front
that are really easy to get to, then pop a trim panel off to remove
the seat belt anchor point and out it comes.

I just sat on the seat on the garage floor to release the cardboard
strips on the bottom edge of the leather cover, and the cover and
horsehair pad slid right off the seat frame to the front. There are
some nylon clips that have to be released to get the cover off, but
that took about five minutes to get them all loose. Then off with the
leather cover, stretch it out over the new horsehair pad, and clip the
retaining wires back on the nylon clips (this is what gives the seat
cover the “pucker” where there are seams between the pads.)

Slide the horsehair pad with leather cover back onto the seat frame,
get it centered, sit on the seat so I can put the edges of the cover
back in the retaining grooves on the seat frame, and do the same on
the back edge.

Clean the interior carpet under the seat and tunnel, put the seat back
in, run the bolts down and reconnect the electricals.

Done!

Nice to have a seat that doesn’t lean to the left from years of use
any more. Yea!!

Tomorrow or Tuesday I believe I’m going to tackle the headliner. Big
job, especially on a wagon…

They still use horsehair pads on the 210?  And you had to replace it?  I
have never really heard of having to replace it on the newer cars.

I’m referring to the rubber “wedges” that are on the sides of the trunk opening

which is what I replaced.

Today was driver’s lower seat (horsehair) pad. Got a new one from Mercedes
this past week, so I had it all ready to go. The seats on the W210 are
probably one of the easiest seats to remove on a Mercedes that I’ve
encountered. Move it back, take out the front bolts. Move it forward, take
out the back bolts. Unplug the connectors in the front that are really easy to
get to, then pop a trim panel off to remove the seat belt anchor point and out
it comes.

I just sat on the seat on the garage floor to release the cardboard strips on
the bottom edge of the leather cover, and the cover and horsehair pad slid
right off the seat frame to the front. There are some nylon clips that have to
be released to get the cover off, but that took about five minutes to get them
all loose. Then off with the leather cover, stretch it out over the new
horsehair pad, and clip the retaining wires back on the nylon clips (this is
what gives the seat cover the “pucker” where there are seams between the pads.)

staying up WAY too late both Friday night and last night which caused me to
sleep WAY later than normal and not feel like doing anything. So, it will get
back at it next weekend. Probably finish up the 240D.

Yes, I was looking at my receipt and the lady at the parts counter charged
me for a cruise control servo (~$24) instead of the switch. I wish they
published a price list, I could have given her the correct term and
probably paid a lower price. LKQ parts chargers do a better job, at least
if the guy / gal at the counter doesn't know what the name of the part is,
they ask me and I'll help them figure it out.

The upside is that they will buy my old rusted out catalytic converter from
my E300 so I can get some $$$ for that, if I haven't already thrown that
out.

From what I have found, it used to be the code for an extra
battery, till some time around the 70-80's but later was changed
to an air duct from under the bumper to the right side engine
mount to keep it cooler so it would last longer because of the
exhaust running right above it.

It was quite easy. I drilled out the rivets, 3 or 4, and pulled the clip on the
plastic slider track, let the glass down, and it popped right out. I guess to
put it back in I’ll need some little bolts. I took the motor off first but I
don’t think that was necessary. It was the LR regulator.

R found this new pick-n-pull years ago, we finally made it. I only had about
thirty minutes, so had to move fast. Found a '95 E320 sedan that I think has
the special edition trim. The door sills were stainless steel with
"Mercedes-Benz" printed, grabbed those. Rims have six holes instead of eight.
Car also has a garage door transmitter installed above the rear view mirror, I
may have to get that. Appears that the steering gear box is tight, so I may go
back for that.

This car has a pair of good Euro headlights, facelift version, but I've already

I got my latest 240d unloaded into the shop. Fuel probably leaked down from
sitting and needed to be bled. I discovered it could not be bled properly
because whoever installed the little fuel line from the prefilter to the bleed
pump had th screws pointed so they were blocking the pump from being able to be
pushed all the way down. Adjusted those and bled it. Now I just have to get the
battery charged up and will see if it starts. That will probably be tomorrow.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-10-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got up at the usual (5:00 am) but it was too dark to do anything outside. As
soon as it lightened up I washed the 350SDL and spent some time getting it
cleaned up and ready to go to the new buyer, who is going to fly in on
Wednesday and pick it up. Got all the spares loaded up in the trunk and
covered the car to keep it clean until I deliver it.

Pulled the W210 wagon out and cleaned the wheels since they were dirty from the
tire replacement earlier this week. I had the installers leave the wheel
centers out, as I’ve got a set of MB centers with chrome tristars on them
coming. That way I don’t have to pull the wheels to instal them.

The door checks were sort of noisy on this car, so I spent some time getting
some grease (Mobil1 synthetic) into the door checks. Not easy, even with a
mirror, but got a fair amount stuffed into the channels where the balls run
enough that I could tell a difference.

Found a cargo net for the storage area which I installed.

Done with car stuff for the weekend, other than a refrigerant top-off on the
W124 E300D. Gotta coordinate that with the oldest son.

This afternoon it’s off to the sporting clays and pistol range for some target
practice with the Walther and patterning of a couple of shotguns.

I started to undertake this process on my own until I realized my formerly
substantial supply of wet sanding paper was somehow nowhere near what I
recalled it being.

That said, it’s not a terribly difficult job to do if you had all the right
grits of paper available. I had a couple of gaps in grits, so when I took on
the left front headlight a week or two ago I had to skip some grits which
yielded a less than satisfactory (to me) result.

Hence the reasoning for buying the 3M kit. For $13 I figured I couldn’t go
wrong.

I bought a 3M kit from O'Reilly when it was on sale to do the left
headlight on our Peterbilt 386. There were sufficient amount of materials
to do the left headlight (which is MUCH larger than an automobile
headlight).

But after I did the left headlight, the right one, which looked great
before, didn't look so good. I started working on it but ran out of
sandpaper.

I was able to get hook-and-loop sandpaper of sufficiently high grit only
at the NAPA Paint Store in Albuquerque -- the local FLAPS didn't have
hook-and-loop sandpaper, and the local hardware stores only had grit 320
and coarser.

The kit I bought came with the sealant, but I haven't put it on yet
because I'm intending to go back and touch up the left headlight and
complete the right headlight.

[MBZ] Today's Fun

2017-08-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Low key this weekend, as I have to sit for a GIAC certification test on Monday
so I need some study time…more alphabet soup!

I was going to drain and refill the transmission as well as replace the filter,
but my FLAPS is only carrying the high mileage Valvoline MaxLife ATF, which is
not what I wanted. Wally World has the regular kind but not in my store, so I
ordered two gallons of it for $17/each ($8 less than what FLAPS wants for it)
but it won’t be here until Thursday.

Second thing on the list was to polish the headlights, which were getting a
little cloudy.

From what I’ve seen during my search for a W210, the first gen cars seem to
have a lot worse headlight lens clouding than the second gen models. Maybe
it’s just due to the age, but I rarely saw a second gen car with cloudy
headlights like I did first gen. Anyway, mine weren’t bad, but I could see
where they were starting to cloud around the edges so I figured I would be
proactive.

Got this kit from 3M via Amazonia:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AIZ5HY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8=1

They make about four different versions of this kit ranging from $12 up to over
$30. The difference seems to be whether or not they include the masking tape
and a sealant in the high end one. I’ve got all sorts of 3M blue painter’s
tape around the house, so I didn’t need any of that.

Masked the heck out of the headlights and raised the hood. Followed the
instructions using a corded drill, as there’s no way a rechargeable would ever
hold up through this.

Pretty straightforward, took me about an hour from start to finish. Wasn’t
difficult at all and they provide plenty of materials. When I was done I wiped
the lenses down with IPA (not the beer kind) and put a couple of coats of
Collinite #845 Insulator wax on them to protect the lenses.

Some observations:

Cover everything. The spatter from the compounding step will get all over
everything.

Careful around the edges. The sanding disks can easily cut through your
masking tape if you’re not careful, gouging your paint. I was careful *and* I
did a couple layers of tape around the edges, as tape is cheap.

After I was done with the headlight lenses I tried programming the integrated
remote in the rear view mirror. I wasn’t sure if it would do the rolling code
stuff that my garage door opener does due to its age. It did! Huzzah!

So now to clean up and hit the books.
