Re: [MBZ] Dang!

2017-05-08 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
I looked up scientology on the web. It appears to be based in part on Freuds
theory of the Id and Ego. It seems to get into trouble when dealing with people
who see visions, hear voices, can't function in normal society
(schizophrenics). Several schizophrenics under the "care" of scientology have
committed murder.

Wikipedia has a pretty thorough article on Hubbard and Scientology. This about
Hubbards early years is interesting:

"L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) was the only child of Harry Ross Hubbard, a United
States Navy officer, and his wife Ledora. Hubbard spent three semesters at
George Washington University but was placed on probation in September 1931. He
failed to return for the fall 1932 semester.[27]

In July 1941, Hubbard was commissioned as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the
U.S. Naval Reserve. On May 18, 1943, his subchaser left Portland. That night,
Hubbard ordered his crew to fire 35 depth charges and a number of gun rounds at
what he believed were Japanese submarines.[28] His ship sustained minor damage
and three crew were injured. Having run out of depth charges and with the
presence of a submarine still unconfirmed by other ships, Hubbard's ship was
ordered back to port. The navy report concludes that "there was no submarine in
the area." A decade later, Hubbard claimed he had sunk a Japanese submarine in
his Scientology lectures.

On June 28, 1941, Hubbard ordered his crew to fire on the Coronado Islands.
Hubbard apparently did not realize that the islands belonged to US-allied
Mexico, nor that he had taken his vessel into Mexican territorial waters.[30]
He was reprimanded and removed from command on July 7.[30] After reassignment
to a naval facility in Monterey, California, Hubbard became depressed and fell
ill. Reporting stomach pains in April 1945, he spent the remainder of the war
as a patient in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California...snip

El Ron got a reputation for being a recluse. Eventually Davide's Miscarriage,
the #2 man in the scam, was the gatekeeper who could keep everybody, including
doctors and family, away from El Ron and claim it was El Ron's idea. Right
before El Ron died, he went into seclusion and willed all his copyrights to the
church, which would be run by The Miscarriage upon his death.

Cynics think that Miscarriage kidnapped him and withheld freedom and medical
attention for ransom, the ransom being all of his copyrighted novels and
Scientology texts. Then, after El Ron paid up, he was worth far more dead than
alive, so it was important for him to become as dead as Lisa McPherson. The
same cynics think it's simple karma that El Ron was robbed upon his deathbed of
all his ill-gotten gains that he'd intended to leave to his family.

Mitch.

Not to mention the income becomes tax free.

The flying spaghetti monster thing is intriguing too. Obviously a joke,
but a good tax shelter, nonetheless. So long as the goobers have no
grounding in reality, any farcical "religion" makes a great tax shelter.

Yeah that was some pretty funny stuff. Didn't Elron's wife or
girlfriend kill him out in the desert and they never found his body?

I have this friend (or used to, haven't seen him in ages) who knew
both of those characters somewhat peripherally based on some
interesting background. He was good friends with Jerry Pournelle and
I guess all these guys used to hang around together at various times.
They were all pretty weird but quite smart too. I met one of them
once, a somewhat marginal SF writer, I forget which one, at one of his
weddings. I remember talking to my friend about this scientologist
thing way back when, he thought it was the funniest damn thing he ever
saw -- some hack by Elron got turned into something for reals and
those idiots started making big money off it. Wonders never cease.

I had this other friend, another MIT guy, who had a very serious plan
to create a "religion" and start it up. He had most of the details
worked out to be internally consistent, but of course the whole thing
was complete BS nonsense which was part of the fun for him. I think
at the time his main interests in doing it were to 1) just do it, 2)
see if he could get people to actually get involved with it, and 3)
women. It of course had him as the Grand Poobah or something, to whom
all the women would have to submit, and the guys would do the work and
bring in money. No xenus or anything like that, it was just some
feel-good kind of thing (mostly for him) and a way to fund whatever
other interests he might have (along with the women aspect). As far
as I know he never moved forward with it but he was more than
half-serious about it. He was quite successful in the women aspect
even without the religion due to his rather winning personality, so
that motivation factor kinda faded away.

Re: [MBZ] Dang!

2017-05-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The Tampa Tribune is defunct. The only remaining daily in the area is the St.
Pete Times, and it’s not doing all that great as far as print media. They do
well with their constant attention to the Scientologists in Clearwater, however.

Big dustup with Miscavich and friends recently:

The Xenu folks have been slowly taking over Clearwater’s downtown area. They
claim to be totally transparent in their dealings, but they’re not. They just
bought up a bunch of commercial properties using shell corporations over the
last year and got busted doing so (by the Times, I might add.)

So the aquarium owns this prime piece of real estate right next to their
beloved hotel where they board the Sea Org people and others. It’s worth about
$4M in the current market. The aquarium offers to sell it to the City of
Clearwater a while back so they can do some things with it, as the aquarium
needs bigger digs since they’ve cashed in big time with their crippled dolphin
thing.

Scientology moves in and wants to buy it. The aquarium says no, they want the
City to have first dibs. Miscavich and friends go to work…

They pitch all of the City council members individually in his office about the
way they’ll resurrect the downtown area if they can buy this land. Yeah, right.
We’ve heard that before, haven’t we?

Then they go to the press about how they’re willing to offer the aquarium $15M
for the property and if they don’t accept the offer the City and aquarium are
screwing the taxpayers for not taking this massive windfall.

No dice.

So a week or two ago the City votes to purchase the property and the aquarium
accepts their $4M offer. Miscavich and friends are LIVID.

So the Thetan/Xenu attorneys all pile on and go to the State claiming all sorts
of terrible wrongdoings on the part of the aquarium, and how they should be
sanctioned for misusing taxpayer dollars, their director is a crook for being
grossly overpaid, yada, yada, yada.

Crickets.

The aquarium does a very nice rebuttal in a very pleasant and positive manner
in the Times the next day. Game over, David M.

So what’s happening now?

When you’re in the area around the hotel and other Scientology venues in
downtown Clearwater, you see literally hundreds of their members walking around
in their getup, black pants, white shirt, gray vest. These are Sea Org
recruits stationed at the Fort Harrison (the hotel they own and is their
headquarters.) These people have virtually vanished from the streets.

Miscavich has ordered his followers to no longer patronize any business in the
downtown area, so the word is. This means that all the shops and restaurants
in downtown Clearwater that were serving the church members are now hurting.

I’m not sure how long this will go on, but it will probably be a while.

dutied at 10%, then the 2.5% kicks in on the balance.

If it was a $5000 car, that would work out to:

$5000 - $400 = $4600

$100 = 10% duty on first $1000

$3600 x .025 = $90

So roughly $190.00 to bring the car in. I’m sure there are other fees that
have to be paid, but from what I’ve read so far it’s pretty insignificant. You
are supposed to schedule your crossing as well so the proper paperwork can be
completed at that time.

and drove it back to Winnipeg  a few years ago. He had trouble starting it in
the mornings and replaced 2 or 3 glow plugs during the trip. On the last stop
overnight he just left it there idling in the Holiday Inn parking lot all night.

You can make it a trip of a lifetime.  You can drive all the way across
Canada to toronto or Ottawa and then head south.  Or you could go south
earlier and hit Jellystone park.  What an Opportunity!

My aunt bought a Caddy from a friend in Canada a few years back.
It was far more hassle and time (months) than she anticipated.
Might be easier if the car's over 25 years old.
Probably easier if you know what you're doing before you buy the car.
And I can't remember, but the car might have been titled to the
friend's dead mother and that might have been most of the trouble.

Nice.

I've spent plenty of time in BC, but not that far north. My travels
extend to Whistler, the ski resort, Vancouver, Revelstoke, and
Kamloops and and that's about it. I've been up to and slightly further
north of Edmonton, AB, however. Guess I would just have to keep going
west

Not to mention the hassle of getting the car across the border.

Yep. I owned a half dozen during the '50s and '60s, but when wife got T-boned
and nearly broke her neck, I bought our first Mercedes, a 110.

The Prius, with about 2 million sold to date and half of those sold in the
U.S., is a fine little around-town car, but it will never be as popular as the
Beetle.

"With 21,529,464 produced, the Beetle is the longest-running and
most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made.

"The Volkswagen Beetle - officially the Volkswagen Type 1, informally in
Germany the Volkswagen Käfer(Germ. beetle), in Poland the Volkswagen Garbus
(Pol. hunchback) and in the U.S. the Volkswagen Bug - is a two-door, four
passenger, rear-engine economy car manufactured and marketed by German
automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003.
The need for this kind of car, and its functional objectives, was formulated by
the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be
mass-produced for his country's new road network. Hitler contracted Ferdinand
Porsche in 1934 to design and build it. Porsche and his team took until 1938 to
finalise the design...snip"

I think I've finally got it figured out. We know that the Japanese are quite
different than us; a culture that reads and writes backwards should tell us
something you know; so when they try to do Western industrial things like build
cars, they often come out with bizarre products.
The Prius isn't really a car anymore than the original Beetle was really a car.
The Prius is just a computerized Japanese version of the old Beetle; a Beetle
on steroids, if you will. It's quick-steer, bounces around, and has a funny
sounding horn; just like the old Beetle.
The Prius will gradually fade away just like the old original Beetle faded
away, but while it's mildly popular with penny-pinchers, money-grubbers,
skinflints, earth warmers, and other strange people who care little about
safety; the Japanese will keep making it and selling it.

As is usual with my luck, two weeks after I bought a Prius because the price of
diesel was heading for $5.00 per gallon, the bottom dropped out of crude prices
and I was stuck with a tinny Japanese toy which was nevertheless reliable and
economical.
The result has been that I only drive the Prius around this small county at
night after they roll up the sidewalks, and drive one of the Mercedes during
the day when the locals and wild retirees try to destroy each other with their
pickup trucks and ancient Detroit iron. In those melees a little whatever-it-is
like the Prius can get caught in the crossfire. Several squished up Smarts have
been buried with the owner inside. One stingy Smart owner died with a smile on
his face because he was saving the cost of a casket.

It's a well accepted fact that the world periodically goes crazy. The Prius,
the Smart, and a president who greets nubile young women by grabbing them in
their nether regions, may be symptoms of it.

The DeLorean? Runs a PRV-6 The PRV stands for Peugeot, Renault, Volvo. This
engine is in cars all over the place, so parts are still readily available
for it.

Like I said earlier, quality control for those cars was horrible. To daily
drive one you *must* properly sort it. Which means taking it to DMC and
give them a dump truck full of money. As a grand tourer, once sorted, they
are actually wonderful cars. Been part of DeLorean groups for a while, so
know some people that for them it is their only car. Getting to that point
took a lot of time and effort though.

Re: [MBZ] Dang! A Bucket List Car...

2017-02-17 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
The 8v was a Rabbit / Golf engine. In fact, the entire car was basically a
sport Rabbit. Same chassis, same subframe. Slightly longer overall but same
basic car. The 16V engine, though, nearly doubled the horsepower from the
early 8V engines, and was half again the later 8V engines. So, was a
competitor to the GTi really.

Yeah, the Germans seem to have some the closest mechanical tolerances in
the world. One single little thing not quite right and the entire thing
breaks down.

I LOVE timing chains, Especially MB dual roller chains. I wanted to
turn the first one I changed into a belt. Never did it. ( I was 20)

I got the wabbit because the PO trashed the head, let the timing belt

A friend had a Jetta with the 1.8T, also had the timing belt break.

Case in point. Back in 2014 I bought a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo. August
of 2015 the timing belt broke on the *very* interference engine. Destroyed
the head something fierce. Reputable mechanic wanted a couple arms and a
leg just to look at it. Brother "knows a guy" that works almost exclusively
on the Audi turbos. Quotes me a price sight unseen, I agree, he has car
towed to shop.

*Today* I have just returned from lunch in my Beetle. New head and timing
belt in place. Supposedly new turbo in place as well. Along with a
replacement for a rusted steel intercooler hose. Already in need of a coil
pack, running a little rough. Needs brakes. Parked it in a spot at work,
got out .

"I still love the look of this car."

P.S. Anyone knows anyone that wants a Turbo Beetle, I'll probably have one
for sale very soon.

Re: [MBZ] Dang! A Bucket List Car...

2017-02-17 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Almost bought a DeLorean once. Had it on the hook, was ready to sign the
receipt, and walked away. Hate that some days. Also had a beautiful
Bricklin, less than 50K original, only small usual cracks in the acrylic on
the hook. And the dealership that had taken it in on trade sold it out from
underneath me (they had it listed on eBay).

As far as troublesome, both of them are nothing but trouble. Both the
Bricklin's and the DeLorean's build quality were horrible. The U.S.
DeLoreans don't sit right, because the laws changed just before they hit
the shores and all vehicles had to have a regulated bumper height. The cars
were already built and ready to ship, so they couldn't re-engineer the
fascia, so instead they re-engineered the suspension. Makes them bouncy.
The Bricklin's were Acrylic bonded plastic. Very heavy. Very prone to
cracking. Especially around the door hinges. Also, on the topic of the
beautiful doors, DeLorean's require *hours* of adjustment to get individual
doors to fit properly, so *most* aren't. That means the don't raise and
lower quite like they should, and need to be slammed to closed. (A properly
adjusted DeLorean door can be raised with a finger, and closed with two)
The Bricklin's doors are so heavy they can't be opened manually, which is
why they are fitting with a "leaking from the factory" hydraulic system.
Almost everyone that daily drives a Bricklin has had the original
engineer's air powered refit installed.

He passed away a couple years ago. Actually reached out to "him" when I was
looking at the Bricklin that was local here. I think it was his son-in-law
that answered the message. Guess he is running the company now. Like DMC in
Texas for DeLoreans, if you own a Bricklin you knew Terry Tanner in
Virginia. But you don't stop loving a car just because it is trouble.

Yeah but if I was to get a car with gull wing doors then I would
want the Mercedes 300slr Uhlenhaut coupe. I think there were only
2 made that were road legal. That car just totally makes me drool.

Re: [MBZ] Dang! A Bucket List Car...

2017-02-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
My orthodontist when I was a kid had one of those. I thought it was
incredible. My dad took me to an appointment one day and I was all
excited to show him the car. We get there and I point it out in the
parking lot and he got significantly pissed about "that must be why I am
paying so g* much for you to get your teeth done!" Being 14 or so
and having not up til then equated the 2 aspects it kinda tarnished my
excitement for the car but I still liked it. He didn't have it for
long, I noticed it was gone and asked him one day, he said it was too
much trouble, he had fun with it but it was time to move on. I recall
reading somewhere that to change the oil the rear end had to be jacked
up pretty high to get the oil to drain out all the way.

G wagon just on looks outside, but all the added frippery and frills just makes
it another rolling turd waiting to fail. The older G wagons were the best. I
really like simple over complex and fluffy
