I don't understand all the fuss. This was well known 5-6 years ago, when the
guy from AT&T came forward and revealed the splitters that the NSA had
installed on AT&T's backbones.

I am waiting to see how this pans out with the service providers, like
Facebook, Google and Apple. Were they being hacked by the NSA or were they
willing participants? I suspect they participated, especially since Apple
allegedly didn't come on board until after Jobs died. He would never have
agreed to something like this

Based on things I have witnessed over the years, I am not at all surprised.

I certainly thought that the link was very interesting and hopefully the graph
presented is accurate. I know that Frybrid is well respected and I assume
until proven otherwise that they are honest. The graph that I saw from a
soybean farmer seemed to show that at 180 deg F that the oil that he had was
still pretty thick and not close to No.2 in viscosity.

Certainly, if SVO works for you then by all means continue. For me, Biodiesel
made more sense for my situation but YMMV.

Thanks for the information.

http://www.frybrid.com/svo.htm

I have included a link to an explanation and graph of vegetable oil and diesel
viscosity. Frybrid is the company from which I purchased my WVO system. The
only item I have replaced is the temperature sensor that sends the signal to
the controller that initiates the switchover valve to begin using the vegetable
oil fuel system. Frybrid replaced the sensor without question.
To those interested the site also contains a multitude of data and information
concerning the use vegetable oil as a fuel in diesel engines. I do not have
practical experience with any other WVO systems, however I read extensively
about the other systems available and decided this was my best option. That
said, I am replacing my fuel injection pump on my 84 300D with just over (to
the best of my knowledge)300,000 miles on it.

I enjoy collecting and using WVO in my Mercedes. I like saving some money,
helping the environment in a very small way, the challenge of keeping it
working, and most of the all, the smell of veg oil in the morning. It smells
like..well, chicken, shrimp, french fries, or fish. It all depends on
where I picked up the oil.

Thanks,
Mike

Well at the risk of opening a can of worms, I can tell you that a friend
recently acquired a 2000 Lexus LS400 and really loves it.
They had an E430 4matic that his wife drove. He liked it but she did not
- thought it too big. He thinks he likes this one a lot more - at least
in party because it was much less expensive. It has about 180K miles and
he paid $3700. He has since done some work on the suspension - ball

Re: [MBZ] Sears service?

2013-06-07 Thread Randy Bennell
Lowe's and Menard's do pretty well on that sort of thing too. I am
amazed at what there is in those cabinets.
I need to find some small screws for the gauges on the oxy acet (how
does one spell that other gas?) setup. There are two little brass screws
holding the housing to the stem on each and a couple of them are missing.
My son and I just picked up a small set from his girl's uncle. Best part
is we own the tanks. Don't use them enough to justify renting tanks so
it was nice to get a set that won't matter in that regard. Tanks are
something like 30 to 36 inches tall so not the wee ones but not the full
sized ones either.

My brother got a one owner driven by an old lady to church Lexus LS300 or 400 a

Very MB-like in that the ride and car were very solid, controls were well

He has had very little trouble or work on it. Says its been a great car and is

He got it through an auction buddy who trolls the local car auctions for stuff

I own a wee acetylene tank. I also own an oxygen tank. In getting a wee
one filled in Colorado Springs, the supplier gave me a mid-sized one, so
that's what I now have. In using the setup for cutting steel, one uses
more oxygen than acetylene, so that works out well.

Yes, usually the oxy tank is bigger.
My father had a set and owned the black tank but not the red one.
We sold them shortly after his passing as I did not think I needed them.
My son Tom is a mechanic so he uses that sort of thing all the time to
persuade rusted bolts etc.
When he mentioned that uncle Al had numerous rigs and had offered him
one, I elected to pay half and we now have them.

Need to get them filled so we could use them.
I would like to pick up some more parts as well. The only thing we have
is the cutting torch. Tom says that works fine for heating things and we
don't need the others unless I want to weld with it. Still would be good
to have around.

Does anyone really retire at 65 anymore? It made sense when the average
lifespan was 70-75 or so, but these days depending on your genes and
lifestyle you could easily keep going 20-30 years from "standard"
retirement age.

Personally, I will be 41 next week and don't feel a day over 30. I just
read recently that for men your grandfathers' lifespans are the best
predictor of your own. Both of my grandfathers lived to be over 90 and
kept working up until just a few years before they passed on. So I think
I've got plenty of time ahead of me...

I prefer arc welding for the extreme amount of heat it can put into
metal, but there are suituations where gas welding is better, like for
sheet metal and when you don't have electric power available.

I forgot about brazing:

Welding
Approximately 20 percent of acetylene is consumed for oxyacetylene gas
welding and cutting due to the high temperature of the flame; combustion
of acetylene with oxygen produces a flame of over 3600 K (3300 °C,
6000 °F), releasing 11.8 kJ/g. Oxyacetylene is the hottest burning common
fuel gas.[11] Acetylene is the third hottest natural chemical flame after
dicyanoacetylene's 5260 K (4990 °C, 9010 °F) and cyanogen at 4798 K
(4525°C, 8180 °F). Oxy-acetylene welding was a very popular welding
process in previous decades; however, the development and advantages of
arc-based welding processes have made oxy-fuel welding nearly extinct for
many applications. Acetylene usage for welding has dropped significantly.
On the other hand, oxy-acetylene welding equipment is quite versatile –
not only because the torch is preferred for some sorts of iron or steel
welding (as in certain artistic applications), but also because it lends
itself easily to brazing, braze-welding, metal heating (for annealing or
tempering, bending or forming), the loosening of corroded nuts and bolts,
and other applications. Bell Canada cable repair technicians still use
portable acetylene fueled torch kits as a soldering tool for sealing lead
sleeve splices in manholes and in some aerial locations. Oxyacetylene
welding may also be used in areas where electricity is not readily
accessible. As well, oxy-fuel cutting is still very popular and
oxy-acetylene cutting is utilized in nearly every metal fabrication shop.
For use in welding and cutting, the working pressures must be controlled
by a regulator, since above 15 psi[12] acetylene will oligomerize

2013-06-07 Thread Randy Bennell

I don't think they will fill them.
I am guessing that they will just swap me for a different set, but I
have not yet checked.

That is what they do with the tank for the MIG welder.

We have an AC stick welder as well as the MIG and now gas. The one issue
I have is a lack of power in my garage. I really need to upgrade the
feed from the house and the main panel in the house.
I only have 100 Amp at the house and 30 Amp at the garage at the moment.
That limits the amount of power to the stick welder and means I cannot
run things like the compressor at the same time as the welder.

I would like to pick up some more parts as well. The only thing we have
is the cutting torch. Tom says that works fine for heating things and
we don't need the others unless I want to weld with it. Still would be
good to have around.

I prefer arc welding for the extreme amount of heat it can put into
metal, but there are suituations where gas welding is better, like for
sheet metal and when you don't have electric power available.

Patrick Henry had some good quotes - but I think that one is from a
letter written by Thomas Jefferson to Colonel William Smith November
13, 1787.

This was in reference to Shay's rebellion, in which farmers of
Massachusetts were rebelling because their farms were being confiscated
for unpaid taxes. Massachusetts would not accept paper money for
taxes, which is how the revolutionary war veterans had been paid.
These farmers found it unjust that money paid them for services to the
country couldn't be used for debts to the country.

http://wiki.monticello.org/mediawiki/index.php/The_tree_of_liberty...%28Quotation%29
http://www.stonefortconsulting.com/2011/11/thomas-jefferson-and-shays-rebellion-a-review/

"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which
is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of
the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such
misconceptions, it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the
public liberty. *snip* The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its
natural manure.”

Jefferson also wrote to James Madison

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as
necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.
Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the
encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them.
An observation of this truth should render honest republican
governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to
discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound
health of government."

I sometimes think that the wheel openings in some of the older vehicles
look a bit empty.
I am no fan of the silly wheels we sometimes see on things like
Escalades

but even Honda Civics come from the factory with 16" wheels nowadays.

I don't think my 115 would look silly with bundts and there is a wider
selection of 15" tires available.

Same was said about my friend and neighbor when he bought an all original

[MBZ] OT - Sondy tale

2013-06-07 Thread WILTON

How 'bout anther Sondy tale?

SPEAKING DANISH
By Wilton Strickland

For the first few days I was at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland in February,
1978, occasionally, whenever I would ask a Danish contractor engineer or
workman a question about the progress of a particular project or work, he
would turn to another Dane and start discussing it in Danish while I stood
silently nearby. I began to get a bit impatient with such as this and
would, after a couple of minutes, break into their conversation with,
"Please, pardon me, so what's the answer?" A couple of times they even
acted surprised that I was still there. After a few days of this, I went to
the base library and checked out a Danish-English text book and some
Danish-English instruction tapes and started studying hard every night. I've
always found learning foreign languages easy and enjoyable, and so was this.

After several nights of intense study, I walked into the Danish engineers'
office area one morning and greeted them very nonchalantly with, "Godmorgen;
hvordan har du det?" (Good morning, how are you?) The Danish secretary
immediately replied without any pause, "Jai har de godt, og du? (I'm doing
very well, and you?) I quickly replied, "Jai har de godt, tak." (I'm doing
very well, thank you.) Meanwhile a couple of the Danish engineers nearby
had overheard us and chimed in with, "Uh-oh, we're in trouble now! He's
speaking Danish!"

My Danish studies progressed rapidly with the help and interest of all the
Danes with whom I had close contact. They said that I was the only American
they had met who showed any interest in their native language. Several of
them told me that I spoke Danish with a Norwegian accent. 'Don't know how I
got that, unless the lady on the instructional tape was Norwegian.

One morning, I asked the chief Dane, "Vil du hjaelpe mig med ordet
fotografiaparat?" (Will you help me with the word fotografiaparat?) He
replied, "Just say, 'Kodak' or 'kamera;' fotografiaparat is old fashioned;
nobody says that any more."

I learned so fast and enjoyed it so well that I was soon able to discuss
some aspects of our projects in Danish, all of us being careful not to let
it be detrimental to the project, of course. Occasionally, when I'd get
stuck understanding a word they had used and begin to beg them to just tell
me that word in English, they'd admonish me with, "You said you wanted to
learn Danish. 'Best way to do it is to be forced to use it." I'd reply,
"Yes, I know, but I'm getting a headache; please, just tell me in English,
so we can move on." Then, they'd tell me in English, and I would most times
exclaim, Oh, cefurlig! (Certainly!) We'd have a good laugh and move along.
We quickly developed a lot of respect for each other.

During the first two weeks of December, on a trip to Denmark, I went out
walking one evening and came upon a beautiful Christmas display in the,
corner windows of a large, up-scale department store in downtown Copenhagen.
The display featured Santa's workshop. I've always thought that a
German-speaking Santa would seem most appropriate. This Santa (Jule Man, in
Danish) and the elves were speaking and singing in Danish, of course, which
sounded close enough to German to make it sound very authentic. I was quite
enthralled with the display. Elves were busy at work building toys and
singing Disney's "Whistle While You Work," while a little train traveled
from work station to work station delivering toys and parts. While standing
watching and listening in awe, a plump, middle-age Danish lady walked up to
me, a shopping bag in each hand, and made some remark about the display.
Not understanding her, I replied, "Jai forstor du ikki; jai er Amerikaner."
(I don't understand you; I'm an American.) She viewed me with astonishment,
put one of the shopping bags down in order to wave me aside more
expressively with the free hand and proceeded with more Danish, including
"Du er ikki Amerkaner! Du er Danske!" (You are not an American! You are
Danish!) Again, I said, "Cefurlig; Jai forstor du ikki; Jai er Amerikaner.
Jai taller kun lit Danske." (Really; I don't understand you; I'm an
American. I speak only a little bit of Danish.) Again, she began to
admonish me for trying to impersonate an American and that I was just a
crazy Dane or had had too much to drink, or something to that effect - I
didn't understand all of it. I then realized I had been telling her in
pretty good Danish that I don't speak Danish and could not understand her.
I turned facing her with my hands and arms spread slightly out to each side
as if pleading and said, "Really, I'm an American; I don't understand you; I'm
really an American, and I speak only a little Danish." She turned away, and
dismissed me with a final wave of her free hand, picked up her bag and went
waddling off mumbling something about a "crazy American or a crazy Dane -
who cares? N

I had read somewhere that the Lexus LS400 sedan was copied after the w126.
Toyota bought one, took it apart bolt by bolt, and copied the suspension, etc.
Not sure if there is any truth to that, but it does sound plausible. The
Japanese were notorious for copying successful designs in the seventies and
eighties, to the point of having lawsuits filed against them in some instances.

A low milage Lexus LS400 would be a fine transportation appliance.

I called last Friday to put in the order, spoke to a woman Kerri who had

A man suspected of rape has been buried alive by villagers in the southern
highlands of Bolivia.

Police had identified the 17-year-old as the possible culprit in the rape
and murder of a 35-year-old woman near the municipality of Colquechaca.

The chief prosecutor says more than 200 furious local people seized Santos
Ramos and buried him in the grave of his alleged victim.

He says residents blocked roads into the village to stop police arriving.

A reporter for a local radio station, who would only speak anonymously for
fear of reprisals, told the media that Mr Ramos was tied up at the woman's
funeral.

He said mourners threw him into the open grave alongside the woman's coffin
and filled the grave with earth.

Colquechaca is a town of about 5,000 inhabitants some 207 miles ( 333 km)
south-east of the Bolivian capital, La Paz.

Yes, WVO can vary from 0.5% to 3-5% acidity in the testing I have done.
Generally the thicker the WVO, the higher the acidity, and the longer
the WVO was used.

Virgin VO (VVO) has to be heated to 260F or higher to approach the
viscosity of diesel. See the bell curve chart here:
http://bunkum.us/svo/viscosity.html Biodiesel is the ONLY way to go.

large the silent killer of IP. Some of the tests that I have seen have shown
SVO heated to 180 degrees F. which should be normal operating temperature for a
properly warmed up system; showing viscosity far in excess of cold No.2 diesel.

Mike, you don't have to take my word for it. When you get a chance, read the
link on measuring the viscosity of motor oil at ehow;
http://www.ehow.com/how_6218753_measure-viscosity-motor-oil.html .

Simply run two tests, one for your diesel fuel at ambient temperature and one
for your SVO at the normal operating temperature that your system runs. If
there is a huge difference then your IP HAS to work harder to pump fuel and
would wear more than typical. Jim Cathy's comment about dissolved salts and
Grant's comment about pH balances could certainly over a long term have some
effects, but IMHO viscosity is the real issue. If you do test your viscosity,
please report back since I would love to see if in your situation it is the
same as has been reported in other places.

Thanks for your time.

Their chart is not matched anywhere else in the industry. It's all
marketing hype. Use Google to find the industry research that proves
Frybrid wrong.

Thanks,

The graph Mike Esh linked earlier seemed to say that SVO (of unnamed variety) at
160° was comparable to #2 at -10°, or approaching gel point. I bet any temp you
can get by heating SVO or WVO with engine coolant is going to be a good bit
thicker than #2 at 100°.

Anyway, I hope the used pump Mike got from me works out. Shouldn't we be hearing
the results soon?

3.) Make an effort to participate, even if it means publicly humiliating

When I traveled as an adult, I went to great lengths to learn what I could
about the country I would be visiting, including it's history, language,
cultures, current events, etc. The response you will get from people is
nothing short of amazing when you show an even limited knowledge of them. I
can't count the number of times I was welcomed into complete stranger's homes
to meet their families, neighbors, friends, and so on when I expressed an
interest in knowing more about them.

I will say this: It can be frightening at times. Be adventuresome. If you
don't know the culture, you may be met with strange looks, gasps, whatever, if
you act (by their norms) inappropriately. All you can do is excuse yourself
and move on. In most cases, your host will help guide you through whatever the
situation is - if you're gracious they'll understand you're a foreigner and
forgive you.

By being accepting and understanding that others are just as good (or better)
than we, you'll have some amazing experiences. Some of the most exciting times
and experiences I have ever had in my life were with people I didn't know and
will never see again. They made me feel welcome because I respected them and
their culture. And I learned some wonderful things about other peoples and

I've always been quickly and fully respected and accepted immediately upon

When the desk clerk's fast-paced response overwhelmed, me, I had to say,
"I'm sorry, I've nearly expended my quick-response French, may we, please,

Re: [MBZ] OT - Sondy tale

2013-06-07 Thread Dieselhead
There is an important lesson in here that I learned as a youngster
who was able to travel outside the country:

When visiting other countries/cultures, follow some simple rules:

1.) Respect your host's culture. Never ridicule, disrespect, or
dismiss their culture, language, country, etc. Just because you're
an American doesn't make you or your country better.

2.) Take a serious interest in your host's culture/language/country.
It shows a level of respect that they are due.

3.) Make an effort to participate, even if it means publicly
humiliating yourself.

When I traveled as an adult, I went to great lengths to learn what I
could about the country I would be visiting, including it's history,
language, cultures, current events, etc. The response you will get
from people is nothing short of amazing when you show an even
limited knowledge of them. I can't count the number of times I was
welcomed into complete stranger's homes to meet their families,
neighbors, friends, and so on when I expressed an interest in
knowing more about them.

I will say this: It can be frightening at times. Be adventuresome.
If you don't know the culture, you may be met with strange looks,
gasps, whatever, if you act (by their norms) inappropriately. All
you can do is excuse yourself and move on. In most cases, your host
will help guide you through whatever the situation is - if you're
gracious they'll understand you're a foreigner and forgive you.

By being accepting and understanding that others are just as good
(or better) than we, you'll have some amazing experiences. Some of
the most exciting times and experiences I have ever had in my life
were with people I didn't know and will never see again. They made
me feel welcome because I respected them and their culture. And I
learned some wonderful things about other peoples and places, too.

There is nothing worse than the "Ugly American" who goes to another
country and expects things to be the same as they are back home.
After all, what's the point?

I spent a summer @ 15 trying to become an English kid, and many other

into the cultures in other parts of this country.

and we went back and forth a couple times, got
some prices on the stuff. This was just prices in the email, not the
pdf quote with part #s, etc. I had received in the past when I put in
orders.

I called last Friday to put in the order, spoke to a woman Kerri who had
the emails, pulled up my info, we went over the list and I placed the
order. It was 3:30ish, she said she would try to get the order in so it
might be shipped that afternoon.

I saw my bank acct had been debited on Friday last.

Today is a week later, still no parts.

You ask, I answer... My prediction is, about mid to late July, the public

>From that, about mid Aug, [Americans are slow to anger and react] a series

bring a ground swell of actions that I've chosen to name "Redneck Spring".

The effect of said "Redneck Spring" [apologies to all honorable rednecks
for commandeering the term, with special exclusion for Andrew ;)] will be a
series of actions which quickly and with considerable use of force, remove
offending departments and persons in government from power, much like you
saw in Egypt or Lybia with the removal of leaders who had held power for
long periods.

Further, I predict, this "Redneck Spring" will bridge party lines without
regard to conservative or liberal, democrat or republician. I've been
watching the pieces of the puzzle fall to place now for past 4 month and
project easily future events that will be triggers.

Just today, there are articles of how "liberal left" persons are now
suddenly expressing how betrayed they feel [Rachel Maddow, for example went
far off her reservation with comments]. The tide of unfettered support for
present administration and congress is shifting... quite measurably.. and I
predict will continue that pendulum swing once now in motion.

That's my view... your mileage may vary.

It's a unique idea. Argon, with one atom per unit gas, has an atomic
weight of 39.948. Oxygen, with two atoms per unit gas, has a molecular
weight of 31.9988. Argon, then, is indeed heavier than air and will sink
down to the surface of the paint in a can, displacing the oxygen.

I have been using oil-based paint for the inside trim of our house.
Opening a can that has been used reveals a skin on the top. Fishing this
out of a can not only brings the skin, but a lot of liquid paint as well.
It also can leave hard particles of paint in the can. It's messy and
wasteful.

Bloxygen sounds like something I will want to try when we get to
finishing the rest of the house.
