Try some WD40 to see if you can get it working again. Had the same issue
with a 124 I had, worked on my 201 rear window switches as well. You can
always follow up with CAIG D5 later on.

Dan,

I can only relate my success using it for the issue at hand. I was
trying to offer a simple semi-permanent solution to Craig before his
upcoming trip. I'm sure he has enough on his plate without having to
worry about changing switches or special ordering supplies.

By all means if he can get the switch operational again with a few well
placed shots of WD40 actuating it, it should be followed up with
something else (i.e. the D5 or replacing it entirely, didn't MB issue a
TSB?). I think most on here would have the sense not douse the switch
with ANYTHING (emphasizing, not yelling) while it's attached to the
steering column.

No rubber cover, but there may be a small trim piece surrounding the
stalk that you can gently pry off for a better look/access.

I'll have to take another look tomorrow when it's light.

Light, yes your going to need a flashlight for this. Even during the day
I don't think your going to be able to see much due to it's location.
And at dusk/night you'll be better able to see if your having any
progress with the switch (if your by yourself).

You'll want to give the pivoting part a few quick squirts over/around
the top with the nozzle attachment. Should trickle down where it needs
to go. Operate the switch a few (10-15?) times to check it's function
respray as necessary. You may just get some brief flashes at first from
the high beams, keep working at it you'll eventually get to where
they'll stay on when the switch is engaged.

I was so happy to have fixed the switch on the '94 E420 I had. Loved how
much light the high beams combined with the fogs put out, big change
from my '85 190D!

Regardless, there is enough room to spray it.

I should have noted before (in case anyone is unfamiliar with the
system), that ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) also limits power to the engine
as well as using the brakes to control wheel spin, depending on vehicle
speed degree of traction loss.

The ETS (Electronic Traction Support) system that superseded or replaced
ASD (Auto Locking Differential) on models which had it previously
available, is the system that used only brake intervention.

No, no! Steering assist is only active when you have the Distronic
cruise activated. But it's an assist onlyit doesn't take full
control of the wheel, only making it easier to stay in your lane by
slightly varying the power assist off the center direction of travel. It
won't prevent you from trying to avoid that 2x4 or rain puddle. This is
possible now due to the electro-mechanical steering.

boots, obviously you don't want to let things go. Certainly a good
independent could get things sorted out for a little less? But please
make sure if you go that route, that only MB or quality OEM parts are used.

I think I mentioned before that the dealer ( or an indi with Star
Diagnostic) has to reset your malfunction message, it's a sub-menu you
can't access from the cluster. If your not having other work done, plan
for up to an hours labor charge at the dealer (not that it takes that
long)

Lastly I asked him about a malfunction message

Re: [MBZ] BenzpR0n of the day - DISTRONIC PLUS® with Steering Assist

2013-04-21 Thread Chris James
Came across an article describing the system working in conjunction with
ESP on the previous A B Class models. I'd like to imagine that
Steering Assist also comes into play on the new E with the standard
ESP program possibly the optional lane tracking feature, they're just
choosing to market it with Distronic. Hard to say though without any
technical info.

From the article: Steering assist is designed in a way that it
supports a driver in these situations, but never dictates to the driver.
The driver may override the systems’ intentions at any time.

It won't prevent you from trying to avoid that 2x4 or rain puddle.

So if I move the wheel just far enough to miss the pothole, it won't
guide me into the pothole?

Re: [MBZ] Mystery Tank?

2013-05-07 Thread Chris James

Yes, Mercedes has (had?) an accessory fuel can available for all models,
but 1408900111 is not it. That is to hold the tool kit. The fuel can
wasn't a 140 specific part.

I only have accessory info for the e-class (124,210,211) on my computer.
Ah, here it is...after some searching the part # to fit the larger 140
wheel is, I believe B6 758 0045! 15 wheel, 9L (2 gal). You would also
need a mounting kit for it too I think, not sure the #.

For when 26.5 gal is just not enough!

(Note: this was not to connect to the main tank, just a small portable
metal can to fit within the wheel rim)

On 5/7/2013 1:05 PM, Dan Penoff wrote:

Not military - fuel?

I was looking at a VIN decoder for my S500, and I happened to see in
the accessory parts section a tank that could be installed over the
spare tire, or so it would seem.

I looked the part up in the EPC and it comes up as a tank for around
$100 or so.

I know they used to sell tanks for the diesels that would go in the
spare tire well to extend the car's range, but I find it difficult
to imagine they would sell a tank holding gasoline in this area.

I take part of that back, after Alex was gracious enough to send pics.

The exterior IS nice, but everything else was a let down at the current

cool features/options, but in reality it's a $2K car at best. Especially

Not that I don't think it's worth fixing up (it is, aren't all old

Some more interesting cars! I enjoyed browsing your local CL, you have
quite the selection to choose from! It would certainly be fun to spend a
day(s?) going looking at all the cars in your locale! :)

This one has got to be at the top of the list!
Beautiful, nearly fully loaded black 1997 E300D (real heated leather,
not Tex! Every option except power rear shade)

Out of state (IL), just came across this 40Kmi 1987 300E? Think I prefer
the DB261 seafoam over the DB877 blue/green. I would expect to drop a
few K's on it getting it mechanically up to snuff due to age/storage
though. Would be a shame to drive it though, a display car really

As to your list, that '94 S350D you found looks interesting too the'98

impressed with the E320 Cabs you found though. Save up get a nicer

Re: [MBZ] Opine away - Limited Edition 190E

2013-06-06 Thread Chris James
No, that is a real Limited Edition! The seller does note that he
wrapped the original trim due to cracking, it's very similar to the
original though. I'm surprised you've never heard of them or seen one.
700 each were produced of the 190E 2.3 2.6 for the '93 MY. There was
no charge for the additional equipment totaling around $3K, a steal really!

The 2.3 came in monotone metallic emerald green w/ cream beige leather
additional burl wood trim, the 2.6 in two tone black w/ black red
leather sport seats carbon fiber trim. Easily recognizable by the 8
hole rims headlight wipers, which at the time were either not
available (in the case if the rims) or rarely seen on the standard 190.

Despite the handling upgrades sport seats/trim on the 2.6 Limited
Edition it did not have Sportline exterior badging, also the standard
model designation was omitted on the trunk lid of both models. The 2.6
did have a Sportline gearshift knob though.

A look back at the 1993 Mercedes 190E 2.6 Limited Edition - a classic
ahead of its time.

Why no Sportline badges on the front fenders?
Did the Sportline seats have those red inserts in them in 1993?
I'd have to take a close look at my 16v and 2.5 turbo before I could say
whether it's got the Sportline sized steering wheel.

The shift knob doesn't look leather, but I'm not familiar with auto
tranny Sportlines, I always used to look for manuals.

I don't think those wheels came from a W201.
That 'carbon fiber' in the dash looks aftermarket to me.

I'm thinking that somebody got a hold of a four passenger seat set and
modified a non-Sportline car's interior, and stuck W124 wheels on it.

Re: [MBZ] Response from Trent -- Worldpac problems?

2013-06-11 Thread Chris James

Not always.

It may state Original Equipment Manufacturer show a picture of the
MB part on a Worldpac parts site BUT.Bosch does not always = the
Bosch part spec'd for your MB.

For instance, I can get aftermarket Bosch wiper blades at the local auto
parts store...if I'm ordering online I want the original MB part. There
IS a difference between the two! The MB spec'd blade of course being of
better quality, has better fitment look. Unless your parts suppler is
ordering direct from Mercedes, there is a chance you won't be getting
what your expecting at times.

I ended up having to order another blade washer nozzle from MB to
finally get the right ones for the early W201 I had.

Of course many OEM parts in other situations are fine, belts, hoses,
filters ect.with some MB dealers now offering online parts ordering
with info sourced from the EPC, not sure I'd bother with Worldpac or
anyone else when I have another MB that I need parts for

First time for me, but had no issues (thankfully) bleeding/flushing the
lines with new syn DOT 3/4 fluid, just by pumping the brake pedal (being
careful not to depress it fully) keeping the reservoir filled.

IIRC I did go through 2-3 (small) bottles making sure all the old brake

Pretty similar I guess, but I hardly log into either. Thunderbird is the

Gmail only allows one I believe.

Re: [MBZ] The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC is here!

2013-09-16 Thread Chris James

Well, there are good dealers bad dealers (and good bad service/parts
departments).

Re-reading Kaleb's post, a chat with the adviser regarding previous
service history, prior to handing over the keys may have prevented the
up-selling improved his experience. Everyone knows those Airmatic
shocks are $$$ (just by themselves) to have replaced at the dealer, no
surprise there.

If you can afford it, I don't see why a new Mercedes diesel should not
be considered enjoyed. The cars now going on 20-30 years are certainly
not issue or trouble free with far more expensive bits that are
needing to be replaced then a new car off the lot would have! :-)

I think Kaleb provided a very good reason earlier when he informed us
as to the level of service received at the local dealer. These things
are as complicated as a modern petrol burner and as such will more
than likely have as many issues, in their electronic management
systems and will have expensive bits that are needing to be replaced
on a regular basis. Anyone that things they will get old school
mechanical Diesel reliability out of these things, could be
mistaken. Then there is the question of how much more these will
cost, compared to a similar MB with a petrol engine?

Yes, it does (at least with MB's). I only know of one engine MB USA
permitted regular unleaded in, the 3.8L M116.

Cool, I'm sure it is! The E250 BT's 0-60 time is the same as the '94
E420 I had (7.1 sec)! Waiting for the mpg reports to start coming in!
The 46mpg hwy Cruze diesel, apparently can get up into the high 50's

Have you had a chance to look at/test drive the new CLA? Rated 38mpg
hwy, not bad!

Seen this 350SDL while browsing eBay. The color caught my eye, don't see

OK, we get it, it hauls! Everyone knows the benefits of an Italian
tuneup, but all the revving of the engine racing it around the parking
lot in a for sale vid didn't impress me or befit the car, especially
with the clicking/clacking lifters and/or belt tensioner it just
seemed overly loud in general. That 603 certainly wasn't purring. More
like $60K new 30mpg.keep dreaming!

Still it's a pretty car, just not for their original $8K asking price. I
wonder how much the dealer picked it up at auction for?

[MBZ] Speaking of trucks....

I found this cool truck the other day on CL!

Turbo OM352-A (145hp/295lb-ft)

http://asheville.craigslist.org/hvo/4100878804.html

Don't see many short wheel base MB trunks, most I've seen for sale have
huge cargo boxers or flatbeds. The short nose MB trucks are really
unique looking, too bad they stopped selling them in the late '80s? here
in the US. It would definitely be cool if they re-issued them with
modern equipment! I guess in the '90s D-B decided to focus on their
other brand acquisitions (Freightliner ect.).

Supposedly the US market trucks were assembled here in the US (like the
Sprinter), anyone know by whom or where? They were quite popular in
other parts of the world.
