Re: [MBZ] Vacuum pump question answered, plus rant

2005-12-23 Thread Mike Esh
I just finished buying car from Stefan Schultze. 1982 300TD Wagon. The
car was definitely not maintained very well. He apparently is buying
them and reselling on Ebay. The belts were almost nonexistent and we
were lucky to make it home to Michigan without a failure. There was
also a leak in the Transmission line he did not make us aware of. I
noticed it when we got home and the fluid level was barely touching the
stick. I added almost 2 quarts before repairing the line.

 Brian,

This all falls under the let the buyer beware clause. You should
have done

your homework on the car before purchasing it.

I've owned 15 old Mercedes to date and I've put serious money into
every

good deal that I have bough to date. These days, I just figure that
I'll

have to put $2,000 into anything I buy. And that's after I check out
the car

and decide that it's in good shape. But you need to understand that
I'll

purchase an older Mercedes then I'll put 50,000 + miles a year on it.

My latest Mercedes, a 1987 300SDL, cost me $1600.00 the first month I
owned

it. About this time last year, the transmission cost me $1760.00 but
at

least it got me home. I'm nursing a cracked head or bad head gasket
and have

been doing so for over 50,000 miles. Even with all of these costs,
it's

still cheaper than the rate that my Wife's new Grand Cherokee is

 depreciating and I won't complain.

 Thanks,

Subject: [MBZ] Vacuum pump question answered, plus rant

Thanks to all those that replied to my question about the vacuum pump
port.

I had the engine replaced with a used one, and the shop that did the
work

warranted the engine for 30 days. The day after I picked the car up,
the

engine wouldn't stop. I took it back to have the problem resolved,
and was

told the problem was in the vacuum transducers near the turbo. I took
the

car back, then discovered that there wasn't any vacuum on the small
port on

the pump. Also, the climate control had air coming from the defrost
ports

only, and the shifting was very hard, as was mentioned in some of your

 replies.

I had a very bad experience with this engine replacement. The shop
owner

claims to have many years experience working on MBZ products, but when
I

picked the car up, the heat didn't work (mechanic said it was a
problem with

my climate control), the starter engaged intermittently, the idler
pulley

was chafing the back side of the belt, a turbo support bracket was
missing,

and various bolts were missing here and there. I spent three hours
checking

the climate control, only to finally figure out that the mechanic had
left a

plug in the return water pipe where it connects to the heater hose
that

comes off the monovalve. I returned the car for repair of the other

problems. They fixed the starter issue, installed the turbo bracket (
after

arguing with me on the phone for 5 minutes that the bracket didn't
exist ),

told me the idler pulley wasn't part of what was warranted ( the idler

pulley was from the replacement engine, and I told him that since it
wasn't

under warranty, I wanted my old one back ), and said the shutoff
problem was

in the emission control transducers, which I know is BS, because
there's no

vacuum on the port to start with.

If anyone's interested, the shop is Chaney's Auto Service in Ringgold,
VA.

 I'm not going back.

Oh, and he charged me $2000 for the replacement engine, labor to
remove the

replacement engine from the donor vehicle, promised me a 10% cash
discount

from the original quoted price, then added enough miscellaneous parts
(motor

mounts, used starter, hoses, etc..) to make up the difference. Go
figure.

And no, it's not worth going to

[MBZ] 84 300D crazy heat

Perfect heat as I drive around town but when I get on the highway it drops down

I checked the heater control valve and found no rips or tears in the seal or

I replaced the water pump and thermostat with no change. When I unplug the
heater control valve I get full heat all the time.
Any ideas? Would a bad fan clutch have any bearing on this problem.

The service manual procedure for troubleshooting your HVAC has something like

[MBZ] Hard start problem returns

2010-06-11 Thread Mike Esh

1984 300D 290,000 miles and running strong.
Car starts very hard, sometimes not at all when I try to restart after
driving long enough to get to full operating temperature. If I
restart within a few minutes it starts right up. If I wait for 2 to
hours it starts right up. If I try to start up within an hour or two
it will not start. To get it to start I have to loosen injector lines
and crank or manual pump until I get fuel to the injectors. During
the winter here in Michigan I had no problem whatsoever. As soon as
we hit 70 degrees plus it started acting up again. Is this a problem
with the injector pump or do I have holey hose somewhere in the system?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [MBZ] Hard start problem returns

2010-06-11 Thread Mike Esh
Thanks for the input. No leaks at the pump and it is a newer style
pump. Appears to to be pumping correctly however after manually
pumping 30 times or more the vehicle will not start. After loosening
the injector lines at the injectors I pumped manually about 20 times
with no results after which I cranked with the starter and fuel began
flowing from the lines within 5 seconds. Tightened the lines back up
and it started right away.
It sounds like I have a pinhole leak somewhere that I am going to have
to track down, what a pain.

Thanks again,
Mike

I had a similar problem with an S10 pickup, it was something in the

be a hot ignition module...

You sure it is fuel related? Is the glow system working OK? Glow

Try bleeding the fuel system at the filter (Top bolt, or line out)
while
you pump the primer. It sounds like air is getting into the fuel
system
somewhere. A leak at the filter can cause a leak. Bad copper seals
in

the delivery valves can cause problems.

If you get air out at the filter, you have a leak. 95% of the time, I
find leaks in the hoses or clamps. Someone on the list reported air
leak at the filter. I have had 2 cases of rusty cars having steel
lines

rust through.

Fuel should leak out of the injector lines when you crack them. They
should not be empty when you crack them. Cracking the lines could
reduce backpressure somewhat to prime the plungers, but if you have a
good airtight fuel supply, cracking the lines has little or no
difference with a Bosch inline pump, after the injector lines have
been

opened. Newer cars have no provision for priming. You just crank the
engine until it starts after replacing a IP or injectors,
or replacing Injector lines. Your 84 OM617 in not much different,
except that it has a priming pump, which is a great aid for
troubleshooting the fuel lines.

Tightened the lines back up and it started right away.
It sounds like I have a pinhole leak somewhere that I am going to
have

to track down, what a pain.

Thanks again,
Mike

I had a similar problem with an S10 pickup, it was something in the
ignition system but since your car is a diesel I guess it would not
be a hot ignition module...

You sure it is fuel related? Is the glow system working OK? Glow
plug fuse? Relay? I replaced the relay on the 84 300SD with

Brake hub?

What's that?

The wheel bearing is sealed. No easy access. A hard job that
requires special tools.

The axle shaft has oil inside the boot.

At the differential, there is a seal for the axle shaft. Seal
is easy to change - but the axle shaft has to come out first.
This involves a bit more, but it's not especially hard.

fuels have a lot more light volatiles in them and so when you shut
the motor off the heat under the hood will cause a vapor lock
condition in the injection pipes. The support in your case is that
when you bleed the line the vapors come out and the engine starts
right off. Same happens if you wait long enough for everything to
cool and the vapors to turn back to a liquid. The proof is to leave
the hood open after you stop the engine and come back an hour or so
later and see if it starts without any problems. At least that seems
to have worked for me on the van. It's too hard to get to the

that some time just to see if that works on the 6.5

of bubbles to focus your efforts before, or after the prefilter.
If the hoses are old, OFTEN, there are multiple air leaks. If the
hoses are all less than 2-3 years old, it is likely to be a clamp
that is not tight.

It is a good idea to change all the fuel hoses every 5 years or
so.

(yes the original hoses lasted 10-20 years.) I have not had MB
replacements last that long. FLAPS hose is usually good for 5
years.

I only use OE or OEM radiator hoses. They are still noticeably
better than any third party hoses.

Also note that the hand priming pump only moves fuel into the
injection pump, NOT out the injection lines to the injectors.
You

operate the priming pump about 50 to 70 times to prime the
injection pump; you will know that it is primed when the noise
changes and the pump action firms up.

How does the car run once you get it started? Can you reach top
speed or does it lose power at highway speeds? Watch the clear
in- line filter
- is there a stream of bubbles entering?

[MBZ] rear axle bearings 84 300D 291,000 miles

2010-06-21 Thread Mike Esh
Is there a good DIY article out there on how to replace the rear
(permanent bearings) on an 84 300D? Could/should axles be switched
from side to side at this time?

Thanks,
Mike
Whitehall, MI

P.S. Still working on determining loss of diesel prime on same car.
Slowly changing hoses as time allows. Last effort will be changing
manual pump and seal. Currently has new style and fuel is not leaking
anywhere that I can see.

Ride is greatly improved and the rear steering and sway is gone. It

We have been working with two agencies and two lawyers. Friday
night we received a call about a possible adoption situation.
That's the word they use. By Sunday, the agency called us about
talking to the birthmother. On Monday night we had our first
conference call with her. She is 20 years old and is 20 weeks along
with a baby boy! We talked to her and got to know her a little.
She decided as soon as she found out she was pregnant that she
wanted to find a family to adopt the baby. After the conference
call, the agency called us to say that she loved us, but she wanted
to check the profile of one more family. (Of course, I suggested
that the agency send her a profile from someone like the
Mansons :) ). We thought we would hear back today on her decision.
The agency sent her pictures of us today and she called to tell them
that she picked us! So, we are now matched. The agency said they
thought the pictures we sent made all the difference. We are a very
handsome

couple, so I guess that did the trick. :)

I guess you could say, we are expecting. The due date is January
6th (The Epiphany), but she will likely have the baby early because
younger mother's typically have them early and she had her first
child early. Her first child is 18 months old and is happy and
healthy. She has a clean bill of health for her and the baby. Her
medical/mental history is good as is the father's. So, we are
expecting and will be flying to bring home our little boy sometime
around Christmas/New Years. We are very excited and even wanted to
share the news with our Mercedes Friends!

[MBZ] Non starting 300D - Follow up

[MBZ] Alternator Failure? 84 300D

2010-10-21 Thread Mike Esh
Hi Everyone,
My alternator appears to have stopped functioning. I noticed a couple of weeks
ago the ignition light flashing on and off very weakly when at idle. This only
happened two or three times that I noticed. I hoped it was just a glitch,
however over the next week my battery was getting weaker and finally would not
start the car. The ignition light is not coming on or flickering at all now.
With the car running a voltmeter test at the battery shows battery voltage
only. About 12.5 to 12.8 after a slow charge overnight on the charger.

I replaced the brush pack/regulator (thanks Rusty) thinking that would solve
the problem, it did not. Belts are snug with no slipping.

Before I pull the alternator is there anything, other than the alternator that
could go wrong with the charging system that I can check?

Thanks,
Mike

Concur. Towing backwards doesn't work too well as the steering
geometry may cause the steering wheels to oscillate side-to-side.
That may eventually whip the Mercedes around so much that your tow

Not applicable on an MB, so long as you remove the key, so the
steering locks. While front end first is desirable, rear first is
ok, with the conditions i outlined. Roads with little traffic /few
stops are preferred.

There was a thread on one of the forums documenting a rollover of
the tow vehicle (smallish SUV) that tried to tow a 123 sedan
backwards too fast. The loss of control happened too quickly for
the driver to react, and he became a passenger.

As I said, Ideally, the tow vehicle should weigh at least twice what
the towed vehicle weighs. With caution, what John proposes can be
done. Slow and careful.

You can probably buy used calipers form car-part.com, or buy rebuilts
at FLAPS. I would guess you need rotors. I would for sure replace
all the hoses to the calipers. THose swell shut with age and/or DOT
3 brake fluid. Most likely you need a new master cyl also. Don't
ever put anything BUT DOT 4 brake fluid in your MB. Unless you
switch over to DOT 5. (silicon) DON'T use DOT 5e

[MBZ] 1984 300D - won't start when hot.

2013-05-21 Thread Mike Esh
Well it is summer again in Michigan and I am again having trouble starting my car after it has been driven for while.
The story:

Air temp of about 85 and I am driving my brother to the Grand Rapids airport from Whitehall MI.
About a 60 minute drive 95% expressway. I am running the air conditioning and it is barely keeping
up due to flaps issues. At the 2nd stop light off the xway the car stalls in the right hand lane
of a two left lane turn, we are four cars from the intersection. This was at about 4:30 p.m. (very
hot and lots of traffic. I immediately turn off the air conditioning and try to re-start. It
cranks valiantly however it will not fire. I try several more times without success. I call for a
wrecker and we begin to wait while parade waving to the passers by who are very unhappy
with us. After an hour of waiting, I flag down a Clarion Hotel van and give him 10
bucks to drop my brother at the airport. I get back in the car and wait for another 30 minutes,
trying occasionally to re-start to no avail. Wrecker finally shows up, loads me up on the back
of his platform and we drive to another 15 minutes to his garage. I asked to use their battery
booster and tried once more to start the car and lo and behold it fires right up and runs like a
dream. I hop in and drive home with no problems. The car starts right up in the morning without
any problems.
As many of you know this car has been doing this in the summer for 2 years now. I do not have the problem in the winter.
While waiting at the garage I loosened one of the feed lines at the injector and I did have fuel at the injector.
Could this hot starting problem be caused the valves being out of adjustment? Any suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

That is an interesting theory. I have a Frybrid vegoil system that I have been
using for about 35,000 miles. Most of the time if I shut down without purging

there a way to test the pump while on the car, other than the cold water test.

I will try the cold water test as soon as it warms up again. We are expecting low temps
of 35 to 40 degrees overnight and highs of 65 over the weekend. It happens more often at
temps in the 80's or above. I will also be replacing the lines and hose from the tank to
the filter next month. Parts to be ordered from MiniQ. (:

No. Only other test for IP is on a test bench at a Bosch fuel
injection service center familiar with MB pumps. Not all are. MB
keeps some parts and specs secret ,but some shops know how to get
that info.

But any injection shop with a Bosch approved test bench should be
able to tell you is the pump is worn out. Some of them may be able
to tell if it is really bad while still in the car.

I'd try Grant's water hose test.

I am interested in the injection pump. My mechanic would like it to be as close
to my existing pump as possible.
How do I determine what pump I have on my car and what pump you have. I cannot

I have a pump from an 85 wagon and it does look different than the 84 pump.

there is a huge difference then your IP HAS to work harder to pump fuel and
would wear more than typical. Jim Cathy's comment about dissolved salts and
Grant's comment about pH balances could certainly over a long term have some
effects, but IMHO viscosity is the real issue. If you do test your
viscosity, please report back since I would love to see if in your situation
it is the same as has been reported in other places.

 Thanks for your time.

Re: [MBZ] '91 350SDL not charging? - starter?

2013-05-31 Thread Mike Esh

On Wednesday I replaced the power steering and AC belts on my 84 300D. Power
steering was fairly easy using a 1/4 drive set. The AC belt was not so easy.
The 3 bolts are inconveniently located and it is hard to get enough room to turn
them. I think I spent about 90 minutes on the project. In both cases, even with
all bolts loosened up I could not get the units to move far enough to easily slide
the belts on easily. I ended up using a couple of large screw drivers to force the
belts onto the appropriate pulley.

[MBZ] 84 300D Injection Pump install

I am scheduled to drop off my car on Thursday and hoping the pump that Mitch so
kindly provided will solve all of my starting problems. It is taking more and
more cranking to to get it fired up.
The estimate for removing the old pump, installing the new one and making all

Re: [MBZ] 84 300D value of vegoil conversion

2013-06-04 Thread Mike Esh

About 35,000 miles since i installed the system. I probably averaged 75%
vegoil during that time. 35000 miles x.75 = 26,250 miles / 20 mpg = 1312
gallons x $3.50 per gallon = 4592.00. System cost including filtering costs,
setup, installation, incidentals, etc. $2800.00.
Net without labor cost = 1792.00

Note this is a ballpark estimate, I did not record or keep a running total of
my mileage or costs. I have never paid for oil. Fixed cost was $1800.00 for
Frybrid Kit which included a welded aluminum 17 gallon tank and all lines,
hoses, controller and electronics. I paid $500 for a electric motor, pump, and
centrifuge to filter oil. The additional costs were for piping, water heater,
and mistakes.

Make your own conclusions. I enjoy doing this, it is fun and I enjoy driving by the fuel station.

Could this be the push button unit? The mono valve was rebuilt with a new kit

[MBZ] Windshield

2013-09-19 Thread Mike Esh

I am having the windshield in my 84 300D replaced next week due to pitting and scratches
and is very difficult to see through when driving into the sun. The windshield was
replaced due to an accident about 3 years ago and the label on it says it is
PPG. The insurance is covering the cost minus the deductible of 100 bucks. Is there
anything I need to know ahead of time to make sure I get the job done right? Is there a
particular brand of glass I could request?

Re: [MBZ] HVAC / Mono valve issue. UPDATE

2013-09-20 Thread Mike Esh

I tested the mono valve with the engine running and pigtail connected by
applying 12 volts ( 1 positive lead and one negative lead to the valve) from
the battery. It worked correctly by shutting off the flow of heat and allowing
the AC to function. With this information can I assume I have a faulty Push
Button Unit? When the failure occurred it was immediate and final, it does
not work intermittently. And yes I verified the fuse was functioning
correctly. Gary would you be the one to order a rebuilt unit for me?

Thanks,
Mike

[MBZ] PBU troubleshooting and front seal

2013-10-09 Thread Mike Esh

Hi Gary,
Please order me a PBU for the HVAC system in my 1984 300D. I believe you recommended the
Beckman unit. I am hoping this will solve my all heat all the time issue. I
tried the unit Dan re-soldered, however it did not help the problem. (Thanks for trying
Dan) I tested the mono valve and it worked properly when I used direct leads from the
battery. I could not get any response when using the correct leads. Is there an easy
test to determine if the PBU is at fault?

Could you also send me a front seal? I think this is what I need as I have oil coming from the front of the engine and it appears to to be coming from the area around the crank. Is this a difficult repair? Is this leak typical of this engine?

The wipers on my1983 300TD stopped suddenly last week, then started up
again a few seconds later. Today, in interval mode, they stopped and I
could hear a buzzing sound. When I switched to higher speed the sound went
away but the wipers remained inoperable. After a minute or two, they sprang
back to life. Interestingly, the rear wiper also ceased operating during
the outage. I went to the store, came out a few minutes later, and turned
on the wipers. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Front or rear. Now I am totally
scre*ed.

Of course, the next 4 days are supposed to be rainy after 3 weeks of
drought. Any ideas? Is there a wiper relay? Where is it?

[MBZ] 1985 300D 120,000 miles, strong clean engine.

2013-10-29 Thread Mike Esh

I have been driving my new car for several days now and I am very happy with the performance. A couple of questions:

The kick down switch located beneath the throttle pedal is sticking
occasionally and I have to hit it pretty hard for it to switch off and go back
into 4th gear. Is this switch easy to remove and would a shot electrical
contact cleaner be likely to resolve the issue?
When accelerating from a stop the car is very slow and then the it feels
like the turbo kicks in and it is very fast. It is not a comfortable feeling.
I like the fast part but not the lag I get from takeoff. Is there an
adjustment of several things or maybe just one thing? I am hoping just one
thing.

Thanks,
Mike

A new kickdown switch is cheap and takes about 5min to change out.

Have you changed your fuel filters? That can result in accel lag. Also the
tube from the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA that adjusts for boost.
Takes a minute to undo it and make sure it all clean in the manifold and the
 hose.

Re: [MBZ] OT but important

2013-11-02 Thread Mike Esh
My experience is to get tested. I had a history of intestinal issues since my
appendectomy in 1995. Not sure if there is any connection, however the
problems started soon after. At 40 I started colonoscopies anally, I mean
annually. :-) Pre-cancerous signs showed up around 2008 and after several
recommendations to remove my colon, I went ahead with a total colectomy. In my
case it probably saved my life. But who knows? You try to make the best
decisions to stay alive a little longer

I would agree that the measure is most likely a reflection of the
presenting population. I asked my Doc about the results of the procedure
when he was pushing it, and was told something to the effect that this
procedure results in a 5-10 % change in the mortality rate due to colon
cancer. I said that that doesn't sound like a significant change. He said
that in the field of medicine, that is a huge success. I've been even more
 skeptical of modern medicine since.
I've declined the procedure, sounds like scare tactics to generate revenue
more than saving my life. Now, if they do find a bad polyp and save your
life, I guess it's worth it, but the odds don't seem to be in your favor.

So the fellow's rate of detecting suspicious tissue in your intestine is
