strange browser behaveour
Amd64 snapshot. Browser is conkeror with xulrunner engine. After updating packages, out of the box, conkeror starts and freezes. No input at all. I played a bit and opened it through torsocks. Guess what? It works. Since I cannot type, close, anything, that might not be con- keror problem at all. In torsocks session it behaves as usual. Any idea what to try next? One more thing in 8th may snapshot. In xterm, typing long com- mand, it does not break and continues in the next line, but it blanks that line and writes end of the command. Just cannot recall if it was present in recent snapshots. Best regards Zoran
Re: problem with packages after update
To report back. After waiting a day for packages to be in association with snapshot, it all installed fine. Thanks all, who helped me to understand an issue. Zoran
problem with packages after update
Sorry to bother the list, but I got stranded after updating to the latest snapshot, amd64. Update went as usual. Tried to update packages, but it failed, saying "because of libraries". Some reading and I decided to delete packages with "pkg_delete -X". Unfortunatelly, it went nowhere. I still cannot install packages, spite I have none and the system works. I see that both packages and bsd.rd are from 8th may. Someone might know what I have to do at the moment? Cannot say what more data I could offer to enlighten the issue. It surprises me a lot. Best regards Zoran
bsd.rd path
Updated to lattest shapshot from yesterday. The path pointed to 5.8 directory, which did not exist. I changed it to correct one, pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/amd64 and installed just fine. I need more time to see what makes me think that graphics acts a bit different on this snapshot. Best regards all Zoran
lynx question
I updated to lattest snapshot, from the one, that still had lynx in the base. After upgrading packages, I manualy removed old lynx version from /usr/bin and installed new version in /usr/local/bin, using pkg_add. Is there something that might trigger any problem, doing manual removal? Too late, I might do some pkg_delete. Should I move old lynx back and remove it that way? Best regards Zoran
Re: OpenBSD 5.6 - amd64 on Lenovo G480
If it is intel 2000, it should work, just as on my current right now. To have it on, I had to go to bios and lower how much memory I set for graphics. It might not be your case, but nothing stops you to try out. Best regards Zoran
pf on rpi
I installed netbsd on raspberry pi and intent to use pf as a firewall. Seems that pf version on the current (7.99.1) is about 4.2 or 4.3 openbsd ver- sion. I am aware that I might stay locked out if I make mistake, since the node is ssh reachable. At first, I would start pf and stay with an option to have new start: # pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf; shutdown -r +10 What bothers me are rules, that could be a mismatch. In fact, it is basic one node configuration like: set skip on lo0 match in all scrub (no-df) block in all block out all pass out on fxp0 proto { tcp, udp, icmp } from any to any modulate state pass in on fxp0 proto tcp from any to any port ssh Would this be enough for old version on netbsd or I have to change the syntax? Best regards Zoran
Re: dwb questions
You might want to file a bug at upstream's tracker: whitelisting is one of the selling points of dwb, and if documentation doesn't make its usage clear, it's a bug. In fact, I'm quite pleased with the very appearance of dwb in packages at all. I found it suiting me more than luakit. Good point would be to have an option to use different configuration file at load time. You are right. I missed the point, regarding various options for enabling or disabling. I will, probably, have to read manual, till I get it. Best regards Zoran
Re: dwb questions
The error message you see relates to webkit, I see it with xombrero browser as well but it never seems to result in any problems displaying pages. well but it never seems to result in any problems displaying pages. I left it alone and everything works fine. Thanks both. You can use cc, cs, ct shortcuts to whitelist domains for enabling cookies. Shortcuts tsh, tsu, tth and ttu whitelist domains for javascript. See dwb(1) manual for details. I changed options in settings file. It disabled scripts and cookies. I played a little with commands above and went nowhere. Obviously have to use the browser a bit to get a feeling. I appreciate your help. Zoran
dwb questions
I was quite happy, seeing dwb browser included in packages for lattest current. Since I found no name of porter, I'd like to ask few questions to the list. When the process starts, it issues an error message: dwb:/usr/local/lib/libestdc++.so.16.0: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.57.0 : WARNING: symbol(_ZN11__gnu_debug17_S_debug_messagesE) size mismatch, relink your program Nothing to be worry about, dwb works even with it. I added extensions: adblock_subscriptions and cookies. Now, in top, I see new processes, that do not go away, when I close dwb: at-spi-bus-launc at-spi2-registry Somebody knows what they are? Also, if anyone could point me to the info about adding noscript/flashblock extension, it would be even better. I am aware that it must be possible to disable js and to block cookies, but cannot find the way. Best regards Zoran
Re: etc56.tgz missing in SHA256[.sig]
Nowadays, does one need to use sysmerge at all? Zoran
Re: etc56.tgz missing in SHA256[.sig]
How will update look like regarding sysmerge? Lattest man for sysmerge(8) lost s flag. Since I use X, it will still need -x xetc56.tgz? Best regards Zoran
Re: etc56.tgz missing in SHA256[.sig]
I upgraded to the 26 August snapshot (amd64) yesterday. I used: sysmerge -x xetc56.tgz and all went successfully. Thanks. But apparently the xetc set is going away very soon, too, so if you wait a day or two you might avoid this complication altogether. For some reason I will miss sysmerge. Btw, in what directory are etc files located now? I assume the place was not changed? Best regards all Zoran
Re: The rant about browsers
Do not want to interfare into os discussion. Just want to ask about status of uzbl browser in packages? It was there some time ago. Then disappeared. I use it on my freebsd nodes and find it just perfect for my needs. Best regards all Zoran
tor status
I see no recent posts on the subject. Repository about 2 weeks ago shows a version 0.2.4.22p0. At the moment I cannot find manual for openbsd, on the net. What is prefered way to use it right now? On other systems it works fine through torsocks. And the user and group _tor are made for the purpose. If I asked something pretty obvious, I'd like to learn links for up to date articles. Best regards Zoran
Re: Eth port (bge) physically powered down after halt -p
I assume it might be set from bios. I look into user guide for a mobo I have and here it is, under apm. Power on by To shutdown my openbsd node i use shutdown -ph now and turn it on with power button physically. Best regards Zoran
Re: OpenBSD - Linux compatibility
It exists on freebsd, but I never used it. I remove every bit of not necessary code from the kernel to prove manhood, or whatever you call it. Compability should enable you to run linux binaries. At the mo- ment almost every known app works on openbsd or free bsd. Personally, I do not care having linux on bsd. For linux experience small node is enough and cheap enough. Best regards Zoran

Re: solved smtpd start
It looks like your kernel and X are out of sync. Are you sure you've upgraded X? Yes, I did. All tgz files, except game55.tgz. The message Mouse0: bad wsmouse event type=18 cannot happen with the xf86-input-ws driver from -current xenocara: case WSCONS_EVENT_SYNC: DBG(4, ErrorF(Sync\n)); return TRUE; default: xf86IDrvMsg(pInfo, X_WARNING, bad wsmouse event type=%d\n, event.type); continue; (above code from /usr/xenocara/driver/xf86-input-ws/src/ws.c) /usr/include/dev/wscons/wsconsio.h:#define WSCONS_EVENT_SYNC 18 Control flow should fall into 'case WSCONS_EVENT_SYNC:' but in your case it hits the 'default:' case which means your xf86-input-ws driver is out of date and doesn't handle WSCONS_EVENT_SYNC events. I recall all x files downloaded, then installed in a second step, which is new, compared to previous versions. After that I sysmerged, then upgraded packages using pkg_add -ui. The box is useful, only messages are on the console. To add something that changed, regarding the sound from another post: it is louder. Something changed. I never heard the node, now I do. I will make another upgrade, when a snapshot with packages of the same or similar date arrive. Best regards and thanks for answering Zoran
Re: vpn question
You say that a home server is not an option, but could you rent some cheap VPS in $country_of_your_choice and run your own VPN there? That could even involve OpenBSD if you wanted; npppd+ipsec works fine with Android devices with the native vpn client. Actually, there is an option to get new (el cheapo tp-link router), install openwrt on it and then install openvpn. With dyndns or alike it should be on the net with some funny name. I was against that solution, for I turn off the router when not in usage. Anyway, thanks for reply and best regards Zoran
vpn question
Does not regard openbsd at all, but this channel sounds like the proper place to take an advice from, since I consider people on it enough safety aware. I plan to get android phone and go through some channel, with home vpn server not an option. I see that play store handles openvpn clients and would like to know if someone uses free and secure public vpn server? A lot of services are available (like strongvpn, hidemyass...). I see no way to make a choice, reading their sites. Forums are some- times contradictory. I hope the subject offends no-one, since I trust not a single review about this. If the list thinks the security on the phone is not possible, I'd take a second look and revise the plan. Best regards Zoran
Re: Keeping OpenBSD up2date
If it doesn't matter how you update the system, much easier would be to go binary. I pretty regurarly follow snapshots and update from bsd.rd. Just read faqs about the subject. Packages are also easy to update, with pkg_add. Zoran

Re: X -configure segmentation fault
I was referring to what's in the base system. I am looking for a minimal window manager in the base system, so no external packages. I wanted to try out cwm but when I run it I get cwm: unable to open display . Is some special configuration needed to run it properly? In fact, fvwm is in base part. It is highly customable and able to follow the way I use the desktop. Reading manual pages is necessary to get the best of almost every application in the world. Best regards Zoran

couldn't you actually provide an example link on freebsd lists clang discussion that you found untolerable/suspicious? Re: Default software in the base
For clang just see freebsd lists. I will not say more, since those posts speak for themself. Anyway, it is the future, for sure. Regarding st, I use suckless browser named surf from time to time, but I found both luakit and conkeror better suiting me. That post to mean that people like different things and it is not easy to find just one app everybody fancies. I tried st and let it go. My point is: default is small enough to enable user to install what he/she wants. It is pure luck fvwm is my favorite manager. But I put vi before mg and... Best regards Zoran

When I run dhclient on the card, the led will power up, blink itnermittently, but no link comes up. Getting an address is the second step. What if you follow the faq? Could you post results? If I complete the same procedure as above with the only working card I know which is a ral card, it will register fine (exactly the same commands, so I know stting the key and ssid is correct) and scan will show my network. Copy configuration file and use it as a starting point for atheros. PS: On FreeBSD, the first card behaves the same, but the second card works, just as a comparison. On the laptop I use freebsd, just for having problems previously with wireless. On freebsd almost all atheros and intel models are supported. I was aware of some cards disliking hidden routers. If you could, do some experiment and enable it first. Then let it be free of mac filtering. Then, some laptop models are not wifi card friendly. Bios disables it, if you don't buy it from the vendor, with approved model. A lot to test. Google for problems for your laptop model, regarding wireless. Best regards Zoran

Re: updated shared X libs missing in sparc64 snapshots from 2013-05-26
The same seems to be the case for amd64. Anyway, spite error warnings, X works. Zoran
Re: Squeezebox (forward udp broadcasts between interfaces?) )
I still have old squeezebox and it is set as a static ip, on the same net as the router and the rest of home net. So far as address is as 255.255.255.0, it will not ask for more. Even better, there is no wires and the device is in another room than wifi router. I say all this to stress that simplicity is the most important in using this kind of gadgets. That $dmz sounds like wireless router? If yes, just connect squeezebox to it. You would be surprized how far g might reach. To be clear, I put media server on debian, since the server was developed on that platform. Best regards Zoran
Re: wireless mouse on 9.1
I have a Logitech Trackman wireless trackball. works perfectly. As does my daughter's wireless mouse. Also logitech. Thanks, Chuck! That very mouse is recommended to me from old school guys. I would probably get something like m185 or m525 if on sale. Best regards Zoran
Re: X (vesa) doesn't work with recent shapshot
Upgraded to 16th april snapshot. Looks fine, except one thing: it seems to dislike usb switch to share keyboard and mouse. I had to remove the switch and put old kb and mouse into the configuration. So far no X antics. Luakit browser experienced some errors, but it was not openbsd problem. Thanks all for help. Zoran
Re: X (vesa) doesn't work with recent shapshot
How this 16th april snapshot differs from 5.3? I will base my node on release. http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Flavors http://www.openbsd.org/plus.html Thanks, Matthieu! I was aware of this schedule. My assume was that release was already finished to be 5.3. Contrary, there would be no time to make cd-s and delever them all around the world. My best bet is that last current snapshot from 16th april should be newer than what will be 5.3. Right? At the moment I plan to go from about a month old snapshot, with working X and problemathic usb (usb switch for kb and mouse disconnects often and makes the usage not easy) to 5.3. Did I misunderstand the very idea of upgrade? Best regards Zoran
Re: X (vesa) doesn't work with recent shapshot
Can you install a new snapshot to a USB stick, boot the stick and test it from there? As original poster reported, it is all fine now. How this 16th april snapshot differs from 5.3? I will base my node on release. Zoran
Re: X (vesa) doesn't work with recent snapshot
inteldrm(4) after KMS changes hangs my computer early at boot, so I have it turned \ off always. I've upgraded to snapshot of Apr. 8, and noticed that run in somewhat I \ would call a semi-hangup mode. No, it doesn't freeze a system or something like, \ instead it shows nothing but black screen. I can switch to console, can even type my \ login/password blindly in xdm, then I can do ps on another vty, and see that it \ started a wm, but switching back to X again shows nothing but black screen. attached \ is Xorg.0.log I stopped upgrading to newer snapshots, due to this post. In my case, it is g550 with 2000 graphics. Similar to original poster. What is status on this right now? On modern intel chips it is known on freebsd not to go back to console after startx, since it gives black screen. It is pos- sible to type blind into the shell, but I avoid this. I su to root and isue shutdown from that. Best regards Zoran
Re: OpenBSD as NAS
to be prepared for storage desaster i am planning to upgrade my home box.itis a intel atom d525 with 2gig mem. Im planning to build up a small raid 10 with standard sata 5.25 inch drives. 1000 mbit lan. This storage will mainly be used for samba shares, backups and nfs shares. Of course i want massive performance. What du you suggest ? Since you posted on openbsd list, I suppose you wonna use openbsd. You seem to be not shy of spending some bucks on the security of the content, so there is ano- ther option to look for: http://www.qnap.com/useng/index.php?lang=en-ussn=862c=355sc=526t=694n=12501 Personally, I'd go after cheaper solution in the same tribe. Some older model, if available. If you build your own box, that might prove itself better. I always do it. The very question is to find proper applications to fulfil your needs. Best regards Zoran
usb question
Does someone experience any usb problem on lattest current? The very reason to ask is unpredictible behaveour of keyboard and mouse, connected to the node through usb switch. Yesterday I had a lot of errors and had to stop X and do a lot of things. Today, it all works like a charm. Like a ghost in a machine. If needed I will provide dmesg and other data. Best regards Zoran
Re: This is my first time to use OpenBSD
Yesterday I just install OpenBSD 5.2 in my little server. I found that OpenBSD 5.2 seem no support for TRIM, it's terrible to our ssd user. How can I run just like 'fstrim' in Linux in OpenBSD? So far, I think you should stick with plain old hdd, if you consider trim option in openbsd. On both laptop and desktop I have ssd, but I do run freebsd on them, using tunefs with -t enable. My openbsd node has seagate 2.5 drive and I found it a lot better than wd. Even further, you might get hitachi yourself. Best regards Zoran
usb connect time
For some time I'm puzzled with disconnections of usb switch. It is a little box, with 2 usb inputs and 2 outputs. Mouse and kb are inputs, and one usb cable goes to the node to share input devices. After I boot current, I change desti- nation node and get screen freeze. I have to manually change it with device button and close X. Now... when I press power button on the case and set openbsd node as a target on the usb switch, X works just fine and, so far, I do not experience a problem. Re: A slight twist on the OpenBSD laptop question
I have a thinkpad T430 with vga1 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 Intel HD Graphics 4000 rev 0x09 I'm pretty happy with it. So is this one not recent or am I missing something? Seems that setting shared memory to =128mb helps. How about wireless? I assume it is intel 6205. Fully supported in freebsd, as far as I know. Zoran
erratic behaveour of kb and mouse
Current from 14th february, amd64. Node connected to usb switch via usb cable to share kb and mouse with freebsd box. From time to time, only on openbsd, x freezes. It is able to recover manually changing source on the switch. I could see error message in dmesg, saying usb discon- necting usb. Some other time the screen stays available, but in the shell characters are repeated with no end. It once happened even in console mode. smtpd relay
Changed mta to opensmtpd. Default smtpd.conf file works for home node. I tried to add relay option to send mail via my ISP smtp server and smtpd refused to load and parse the file. The line in question is: accept for any relay via my.isp.smtpserver What exact syntax should I use? Current, amd64. Best regards Zoran

Re: smtpd relay
Smtpd loaded with smtp:// prefix. Thanks. Another problem surfaced: I added line to muttrc to have smtpd as a mailer: set sendmail=/usr/sbin/smtpctl and I cannot send mail, since smtpctl needs root privilages. Am I on the correct path for this? Zoran
Re: smtpd relay
Ah! Ah! Forgot about mailwrapper! I put /usr/sbin/sendmail and it works fine. It is simply a link to /usr/sbin/mailwrapper. Thanks a lot. Zoran
Re: smtpd relay
One more question. Using top I learnt that smtpd had 7 or 8 instances. Is it intentional? Zoran
Re: intel 2000 failure
Hi Chris! did you upgrade X as well? Did you wipe out the old /usr/x11r6 directory so to guarantee you are not using any old drivers? I did upgrade X also. Directory /usr/X11R6 shows 14th february date. I didn't delete it previously, it was not a request on any tutorial on openbsd site. I'm puzzled since people report success with this kind of integ- rated hardware. Best regards Zoran
Re: intel 2000 failure
Late reply. Upgraded to lattest current. Intel g550 cpu with 2000 graphics, amd64. Running startx, node hangs, just as in original post. Re: usb hub as kvm switch
I don't see how a plain hub could possibly work as a KVM switch, unless I am missing something. A workaround you may consider would be a PS/2 KVM switch where the KVM switch's PS/2 exit cables go into PS/2-USB adapters. (Or are those adapters just as rare in your area?) Those two nodes would never work at the same time. I do not need to switch at all, just to have cables set and to avoid messing with the back of computers. Usb keyboard is happy hacking lite 2, sadly does not work as PS/2. Not in any configuration. It is as it is. So, my probably stupid idea was to have 4 adapter hub, to put usb kb and usb mouse into 2 front ones and the rest adap- ters to use to connect usb cable from adapter to usb on the computer. No switching, as I see it. Monitor has dvi and d-sub adapters and I could connect two nodes, without disconnecting cables. Best regards all Zoran
usb hub as kvm switch
I have two nodes side by side. KVM switches for just usb are almost imposible to find in my area. I plan to use usb keyboard and usb mouse only, since my mo- nitor has two adapters for both boxen. Is it possible to use plain usb hub to do the job? One of the nodes would be openbsd 5.2 amd64. Best regards Zoran
Re: OpenBSD/iwn(4) support for WPA2/PEAP/MSCHAPv2?
wpa_supplicant is the implementation of an IEEE 802.1X supplicant. This port is for wired authentication only (Ethernet PAE) and does not support the wireless WPA/WPA2 functionality. Well, might be true for openbsd, but I assume it is not. On frebsd laptop I use it as prefered way to make connec- tion. network={ ssid=insert scan_ssid=1 proto=RSN pairwise=CCMP key_mgmt=WPA-PSK psk=insert } This differs from example I've seen on the thread, but works flawlessly. To use it I just run it with: wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B Best regards Zoran
Re: new hardware
Laptop batteries area planned to have a 1-2 year life, and some times you get less some times you get more, I have one Thinkpad that the battery lasted about 6 months and wont hold a charge, I have another that is 5 years old. Yeah. It drives me mad. My thinkpad has 5 hours in console mode and about a half in xorg. From the very start I was not sure if that battery was correct. Since I started this thread, to report what decision I made: I will get small case, chieftec bt-02b-180, intel g550 and asus p8h61-m lx3 r2.0. I hope this will run 5.2 in graphical mode. Best regards Zoran
Re: X issues with Intel HD 2000 graphics card on ASUS P8 H61 mobo
Late reply, but I see it searching for this chip. You might be lucky if you add few lines in xorg.conf: Section ServerFlags Option DontZapoff Option AutoAddDevices false EndSection See if it works for you. Zoran
Re: integrated graphics
The core i3-3225 is ivy bridge based, which means the graphics only works under \ -current and no DRM acceleration until the driver support improves. Thanks for the answer. I must be wrong defining what I want. I would like to be able to do startx and have 1280x1024, with browser and few shells. Nothing more. If this is possible with some sandy bridge, even better. Or some amd apu, further better. The most sophisticated task would be reading pdf file in xpdf or looking at some pics with feh. No movies, no youtube, no games. How the screen would look like if I start xorg on Radeon HD 6410D? Or on intel 2000? Do all people having modern hardware use it in console mode only? Best regards all Zoran
Re: integrated graphics
I have Intel 4000 here, and I am unaccelerated, but do have native resolution X, and lots of xterms and Firefox works as expected. 2000 should be totally fine, and accelerated if I remember correctly. Great! Quick search revealed I could go after g550 for about 35 euros. It has hd 2000 inside. The same price tag is for amd fm1 a4-3400 with HD 6410D. Would it have the same reso- lution 1280x1024? Aside that, almost all newer amd chips have 7000. Best regards Zoran
Re: integrated graphics
Sadly right now Intel is going to be the best if you are going to use the integrated graphics. Intel graphics tend to be better supported than AMD (ATI). I already have freebsd desktop and laptop. I want to get small box, to put it in a corner, left in my room and play with it. The only small case available here is chieftec bt-02b-180. There is not much space inside. So, integrated. On the laptop I type this I have: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz (2294.84-MHz K8-class CPU) Graphics works with kms. Once it is up, I cannot go back to console. No biggie for now. What I want to ask is: what intel cpu in fact? I'm not familiar with the topic. Would be perfect if I might go with g550 or si- milar cheap one. i3-2120 is over 100 euros here. Add mobo and you see how it goes. From earlier posts I was sure something like a4-3300 plus a55m motherboard would suffice. Am I wrong? Now if you have no concern for the integrated GPU and plan on using a GPU that is supported I always say AMD. More performance for the price and to me seems more stable under multithreaded load. Yeah, I like amd better. On desktop it is 8120 bulldozer. And I like it. I might bother gentle readers, but have no clue what to buy and stay alive. I need exact processor name. So, if someone has amd or intel, integrated, wirking on amd64 5.2, please say the name of it and I will get the same one. Best regards Zoran
Re: new computer
Buy a refurbished ThinkPad, still better older ThinkPad than shitty plastic Acer/Asus crapbook. Not an option. At my place there is no market of that type. Further people do not buy laptops of business kind. I will change the subject, to closely match questions I have. Best regards all Zoran
integrated graphics
I found it too hard to find proper laptop for sane sum of green papers, to run openbsd amd64. In a haze of quest, I set my eyes on two lovely comp cases: chieftec bt-02b-180 silverstone sg05 Digested question would be: what integrated cpu works on 5.2 amd64? Better to go after intel or amd? There are posts of both sandybridge and amd fusion with gra- phics working. I will get the lower end of one this list recommends as a choice. If amd, probably fm1 socket, asus with realtek 8111 e/f ethernet. Simple: what cpu? Zoran
new computer
For some future period I will get new node to run on openbsd. First dilema is to have laptop or desktop. Both have something to learn about supported hardware. I'd like to know what are popular el cheapo parts. Current, since at my place anything older than 1-2 years cannot be found. 1. For desktop, some integrated solution. Like amd a4-3300. Or to run for intel? No need for 3d or movies or games. I cannot understand the state of this newer chips. In short: what inte- grated cpu? What is good and proven mobo for that cpu? 2. The only option not to break the bank, 14 laptop is asus x401a. Intel Celeron Dual Core B830 1.8GH, Intel HD Graphics 2000 (Intel GT2), probably some atheros bgn wifi.HM70 Express Chip set. Or: AMD Ontario Dual-Core C60 1.33GH, AMD Radeon Mobility HD6290 (C60) AP, whoknowswhatwifi, as amd version. I've read supported hardware lists. Something is not available, something is on expensive side. I already have nodes for mundane tasks and would like to have dedicated box for openbsd, 64 bit. If I go for desktop, I want the least expensive option and wor- king on openbsd 5.2. The same for 14 inch laptop, probably with matte screen, which is hard to find under $500. The more I read, less I know what to buy. Best regards Zoran
Re: ralink 3072 not showing up
I've sent tenda dongle back. 'Ordered d-link dwa-140, which is on the run man page. Thanks all, who helped to solve the puzzle. When the device comes, I will report how it works (or not). Best regards Zoran
ralink 3072 not showing up
After some problems with rsu dongle, I got brand new Tenda w326u, which is ralink 3072 device, running from usb adapter. To my surprise, it does not show up as run or rum, but as umass0. My best guess is that it should work like a charm. What else happened? Well, if I put in into the laptop, it does not boot. I assume all needed drivers are already installed as part of base system. What additional info I might provide further? Dmesg is the same as in: http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-miscm=135679558207507w=2 Best regards Zoran

Re: ralink 3072 not showing up
At the moment I could post from another laptop only. Thinking again, I assume I have to remove storage partition on usb stick, that figures as wifi dongle. That is the reason why boot hangs and waits for some- thing to happen. Since the device in not broken, I probably cannot send it back. I could try to mount it, but do not see the device I should mount. Re: ralink 3072 not showing up
Yeah! On openbsd laptop I made it mounted as /dev/cd1c. It is cd9660 file system and is read only. I cannot do anything. Files are: AutoInst.exe Autorun.inf Setup.exe This is just annoying and I cannot find the way to delete it. Zoran

Please try: # eject cd1 I did and it was possible to see run0. Nothing more. I cannot approach the router. I fails, since cannot load microcode number 8051. Zoran
Re: rsu problem
Hi Brad! Happy New year and all the best! Issue ifconfig scan 3-4 times and it'll happen. I am not using ifconfig scan although I consider that pretty important to work reliably. It's the net80211 stack that issues a scan under some conditions. Once the driver is no longer able to issue this firmware command because it fails it will no longer reconnect. I don't remember if issuing down / up was enough or if I had to disconnect and reconnect the adapter. The good in console is that you see error message and know you have to do something. I /etc/netstart rsu0. In graphics it is no longer possible. My bet is that my laptop was too hot in the time I was posting. Also, other people do complain about issue. I made ifconfig rsu0 debug and got a lot of data. I have seen it regurarly connecting to the router and having handshake. After that it was not able to get rid of those messages. I had to reboot the node. I think I/we have two possibilities. First is to ask Mr Bergamini or someone else to redo the code for rsu. Second one is to buy another dongle. Taking this seriously, what good usb dongle would be at the moment? The one that works with 5.2 and might be found on the current market. Best regards all Zoran
rsu works (was: rsu problem)
If one installs firmware and gets output with: ifconfig rsu0 scan he/she is on the road to succeed. Since openbsd is not my primary OS, I had some strange surprises. Finally, it all went fine. Definitelly, rsu does not like hidden ssid. Next, confi- guration file has to be set in this manner: less /etc/hostname.rsu0 inet 192.168.1.101 #put your static IP nwid ssid wpakey pass Notice two lines. First one sets ip, which should work fine in any occasion. Second line connects to the router. Be aware that you need /etc/mygate and /etc/resolv.conf populated correctly. I see line disconnected every 10 minutes or so. I assume that one line has to be added to cron, for i.e. 3-5 mi- nutes. Beyond that, laptop seems to be hotter, spite -C flag to apmd. Best regards Zoran

I don't understand your question. You previously wrote: Yeah. Understanding the question is having a half of an answer. I have no idea what you tried (other than remove pf (you presumably mean _disable_ pf)), so I can't make good suggestions about what to try next. I tried every sane and stupid thing in the world. Re: rsu problem
I was sure having wireless dongle up and working is just an easy job. Seems I was wrong. This morning I connected ethernet cable to laptop, configured hostname.rl0 and it was airborne. I did similar for dongle rsu0 and failed. To remind rsu0 at uhub0 port 2 Manufacturer Realtek 11n Adapter rev 2.00/2.00 addr 2 rsu0: MAC/BB RTL8712 cut 3, address 1c:7e:e5:1f:a1:f3 Regarding data, it is d-link dwa-131 with rtl8191su chip. I checked out router configuration and found no connection from the dongle. Router is dd-wrt, wpa2-aes, mac filtered. I set ssid as hidden. Dongle blinks and the system gives a message: rsu0: could not send site survey command Further I tried another step. I did fw_update. It shows no message and the result is the same. I assume something is wrong either in configuration or in hardware. Maybe this chip does not support wpa2-aes. I'd be glad to hear what newer dongles people use suc- cessfully with hidden ssid and wpa2? Investing might prove better. Best regards Zoran
rsu problem
HP nx9020, 5.2, i386. Put d-link dwa-131 usb wifi dongle and it shows up as rsu0. The content of hostname.rsu0 does not matter, since I never got to wireless router. I.e. inet 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 NONE nwid ssid wpakey password The message after ifconfig is like this: rsu0: flags=8843UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST mtu 1500 lladdr mac_address priority: 4 groups: wlan egress media: IEEE802.11 autoselect status: no network ieee80211: nwid ssid wpakey password wpaprotos wpa1,wpa2 wpaakms psk wpaciphers tkip, ccmp wpagroupcipher tkip inet 192.168.1.102 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255 inet6 fe80::1e7e:e5ff:fe1f:a1f3%rsu0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 Firmware installed from openbsd site. Whatever I do, remove pf, or else, I cannot connect to the router. Manual ifconfig was the same, no network. After some hdd problems, I reinstalled and now I get another problem: boot hangs at: preserving editor files After a minute or so, it finishes the boot with this line: starting network daemons; sendmail inetd sndiod. There is a chance that it is fine, but next things in a raw waits. I remove usb dongle and it boots further. I am able to scan, so dongle works. If dmesg needed, I'd provide it, but nothing useful sits there. Best regards Zoran
Re: delay after preserving editor files [Was: rsu problem]
preserving editor files After a minute or so, it finishes the boot with this line: That just means the system went down while someone had a file open in vi, so you have vi save files in /var/tmp/vi.recover/ and the system at that moment in the start up is generating email messages to the owners of the files saying run vi -r. I found it a minute after I made a post. Sorry to bother for that. The main problem still exists. I was pretty short and did not include all details for rsu issue. It is brand new dongle, realtek rtl8191su and I installed Bergamini's firmware. If I do: ifconfig rsu0 scan I see all non hidden routers around my flat. Not mine, since I hid ssid. I set router to work on g only. I am positive dongle is not broken and that I probably do not understand the topic as I should. As the next move, I'd install wpa_supplicant and see if I could go further. What is beyond my knowledge is why I cannot get a handshake properly? Wpa2-aes is not new and I assume everybody on this list uses it regurarly. Even further, doing route show gives blank result. Since I get scan output, it shuld not be firewall issue. Any idea to go on? Best regards Zoran
Re: reading FreeBSD fs
You could always use memstick image of freebsd to boot live system. Mount whatever is necessary, find the file, insert another usb stick or send the file using mail or else. Zoran
Re: ath or ral?
After some more researching, I found interesting idea for 8 years old laptop: realtek rtl8191su inside d-link dwa-131 adapter. http://www.undeadly.org/cgi?action=articlesid=20101216231634 My thinkering is that usb adapter uses less power than pcmcia. The driver is rsu. Laptop is HP nx9020 with 2 usb ports: none2@pci0:0:29:0: class=0x0c0300 card=0x3084103c chip=0x24c28086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller *1' class = serial bus subclass = USB none3@pci0:0:29:1: class=0x0c0300 card=0x3084103c chip=0x24c48086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller *2' class = serial bus subclass = USB none4@pci0:0:29:2: class=0x0c0300 card=0x3084103c chip=0x24c78086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller *3' class = serial bus subclass = USB none5@pci0:0:29:7: class=0x0c0320 card=0x3084103c chip=0x24cd8086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB 2.0 EHCI Controller' class = serial bus I assume usb is able to power this adapter and run at sufficient speed? ath or ral?
I have an old laptop on which I plan to install 5.2 i386. Using pcmcia it should go to internet. What wifi card to choose: atheros 5212 or ralink 2500? Both are considered supported quite well. Best regards Zoran
