2010-10-11 Thread Flixspix
Hey Guys!

I stumbled on an amazing one sheet for those collectors and dealers who
are big time fans of CLINT EASTWOOD (and who here isn't?) and very rare style
B versions. I have just listed on Ebay a really rare version of WHERE
EAGLES DARE STYLE B. And its an auction and the starting price is very well
priced for those that know about this particular one sheet. Click link
below. I have also listed 2 great sci-fi inserts, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE
and THE MYSTERIANS again all auctions, starting at reasonable prices and in
excellent condition. So check them out even just to see a rare version of

I'm now looking for an UNFOLDED replacement for this -- and of course --

[MOPO] FS OLD DARK HOUSE, DR. CYCLOPS END IN 7 HOURS

2010-06-02 Thread Flixspix
Just a friendly reminder of some great halfsheets and onesheets ending
today in about 7 hours on Fleabay.
Thanks Freeman

THE OLD DARK HOUSE HALF SHEET RR39 Great art and at a fraction of the
price of paper 7 years earlier. But do not think for one second this is
commonly found. To date I have yet to find another ever having come up for
auction anywhere. The TC has at Heritage some time ago with the same art, but

not a half sheet. Also for those unfamiliar..this is one, absolutely
phenomenal UNIVERSAL HORROR feature, that in my opinion (which is 99%
always right), is the best from the numerous genre features of the 1930's from
Universal save for BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. If you have never seen THE OLD
DARK HOUSE, buy the half sheet and when you see the film you will be so
glad you did.

DOCTOR CYCLOPS '40 Original 1940 release HALF SHEET. What's great about
this half sheet is this version is arguably better than the one that has
sold a couple or three times at Heritage. Doesn't say style B but it is one
with the entire cast and my guess just about actual size after the Doc got
a hold of them. Great colors in this half sheet, and a fun film that was
shot in Technicolor just like GONE WITH THE WIND a year earlier!

Hi from Joe.

Hope some of you won't mind on OT tale. Delete if you aren't interested.

I guess in the wake of the loss of Dennis Hopper, I should tell the story
of my connection again. I'm pretty sure I've told it before

In 1967, as I've told many times, I worked on the Sunset Strip at a
restaurant/pizzeria/coffee house called first, Angelo's, then Mama Yuro's
and, finally, Mother's. The place was leased to partners but was owned by
Elmer Valentine and Mario (of the Whisky)-- and I believe Steve McQueen had
a hand in it. (I also believe the esteemed Greg Douglass was a customer as
well, but we didn't know each other!)

During the early part of that summer ('67), Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda
started hanging out on our front sidewalk patio, often with Lou Adler,
John and Michelle Phillips and other music folk from across the street
(offices in the 9000 Sunset building) and the Whisky a-Go-Go which was down
the
street on the corner.
Dennis was already affecting the bearded, long-haired look that was to
become iconic. I didn't recognize him the first time I waited on them.
During their visit, I overheard someone calling him, Dennis, and realized
after awhile who he was. I had always liked him (particularly in Giant) and
told him so.
Hopper liked joshing folks and he pretended he didn't know who I thought
he was and that I was mistaken. I caught on and told him he was right, that
I WAS indeed mistaken and that I really finally recognized him as Sal
Mineo. This started something.
Over the next few weeks, anytime Dennis and Company came in, I waited on
them, calling him Sal all the time, confusing the hell out of his friends
and amusing the hell out of Dennis.
It culminated one day when a girl who was with them was giving Dennis a
hard time. Just as she finished letting him have a verbal assault, I leaned
over to deliver something and said to her, You ought to be nice to him.
I saw him in 'Exodus' and he was damned good! That was it! Hopper fell
on the floor in hysterics, the girl fumed and we all had a huge laugh.

Some two years later I was working in the Mineo production of Fortune
Men's Eyes at the Coronet Theatre on La Cieniga Blvd, when one day the
stage manager, Len Marsal ( _http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0550348/_
(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0550348/) ), asked me if I used to work on the
Sunset Strip
at this place, etc., and when I said yes, Len said, Goddammit, YOU'RE the
one!
What do you mean? I asked.
Anyway, it turns out that Dennis Hopper had remembered me and when they
were putting together the team to shoot Easy Rider, probably during 1968,
he sent Lenny (who was to be second asst. director on Easy Rider) looking
for ME on the Strip. I was not to be found.
Needless to say, it was another case of Joe's idiotic inability to stay
put. Had I still been in L.A. (I was in MS at the time) and Lenny had found
me, I would have worked on and probably been IN Easy Rider.
Lenny said that Dennis had said that since that guy from the Strip
restaurant was a southerner, it would be a good idea to have someone like me
along for communication purposes in those days when long-hairs like Dennis
and Peter were not particularly welcome in some places where shooting was
planned. Indeed, in those days, the ending of Easy Rider was certainly a
possiblity in real life.
But I was gone from the Strip- so, no Easy Rider for Joe.

That incident and the fact that I was once again in Mississippi after the
NYC production of Fortune and Men's Eyes and was unable to be found to do
a speaking part in the movie (arghhh!).
well, that's another thing.

Oh, well. I'm still young! I'll only be 67 this July-- two days before
Mick Jagger turns the same age (and the same day (7/23) that Dan
Radcliffe-- Harry Potter-- will be 21 (the little bastard ). And I ain't
finished
yet!!!

R.I.P, Dennis Hopper! You were the last of a unique Hollywood breed and
you will indeed be missed!!

Joe

PS-- It is fitting and proper that Dennis Hopper finally got that deserved
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame--- even if it was less than three
months before his death.
Sal Mineo, nominated twice for the Oscar by age 20 and a friend of
Hopper's, is still awaiting HIS Hollywood Walk of Fame star--- almost 35 years
after his tragic murder--- mugged

[MOPO] OT RIP Dennis Hopper

2010-05-29 Thread Flixspix
I guess everyone saw this coming especially his frail presence at his
Walk Of Fame celebration, but Dennis Hopper hours ago passed away.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper, best known for
directing and starring in the 1969 cult classic “Easy Rider,” died Saturday at

The hard-living screen icon died at 8:15 a.m. PDT , surrounded by family

Jaime were dropped by the court as there was no evidence to bring a case
against him.

That is not what happened at all, and I believe he knows it.

Jaime got a pass through legal system plain and simple. Its like saying, I
was creating fake hundred dollar bills to see how good I could get them,
but honestly judge, I never intended them to be used for real currency.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, would spend the time and effort it took to
create these unless there is something to be gained in their bank account
somewhere. Anyone that is supporting Jaime as having one pulled over on him is
putting the shades on themselves plain and simple.

While Kerry may have been the mastermind, the creator - as in the actual
creator of the fakes is/was Jaime.

The gun analogy is a poor one, as I agree that there is nothing inherently
wrong with asking someone to make a fake (suspicious - yes, wrong - no),
but once Jaime found out that the fakes were in the marketplace and being
marketed as originals, he had a responsibility to not only inform the people
who had sent him fakes for inspection/further work that they were fakes,
but a moral obligation of declining to produce further copies.
Yet he did neither of these things and continued to make them until the
fraud became public knowledge.

So maybe a better analogy is: if you were 100% certain that a person you
sold a gun to last week committed murder with that gun, and that they also
committed murder with a gun you sold them two weeks ago, would you sell
them another gun when they came into your store this week and asked for one?

Virtually everyone in the hobby was fooled...

Jim,

I WASN'T FOOLED!!

And there were a lot of other knowledgeable collectors who weren't fooled
either. Again, you don't know what you're talking about.

If John was so concerned and wanted to help the industry so much, he
shouldn't have charged $175. plus, to authenticate each item. I guess you
also think Carol Tincup was another person who was trying to help the
industry when she charged you $350. an item.

Jim, there were many collectors who sent me posters and lobby cards to
authenticate. Do you know how much I charged them?? $00.00, ZERO, NADDA,
NOTHING. Now, you tell me, who's really trying to help the industry or help
out collectors, John and Carol??

Yet, you still support the creator of this entire mess.

This is so funny that you pointed out the parade saddle. I had noticed
some weeks ago as it reminds me of my growing up in San Antonio. The rodeo
was always held at the Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum. My parents
(especially my Mom, quite the horsewoman and showed quarter horses) were very
close
friends of the two brothers that started the San Antonio Livestock
Exhibition (hence the source of my first name when I was adopted) and going to
the
rodeo until a young adult. As a kid, I used to be mesmerized by these
saddles during the opening of each rodeo, the incredible craftsmanship was a
marvel to young eyes as I would go to the barns and watch the owners
carefully polishing their saddles with utmost care and pride. Then during the
procession of the trail riders before each performance, when the spotlights
would hit the leads atop these saddles, they would literally gleam like the
treasures they truly are. As a kid I knew they were expensive but had no
idea they were THAT expensive! Whoa!

Now the rodeo is held in the same soul less stadium the Spurs play that
sits next to the old Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum (obviously more seats)
but all the barns and stalls that my Mom had helped design surrounding are
still in use. This year, she was inducted into the Hall Of Fame, only the
second woman in the exhibitions history to be so honored.

[MOPO] Related LA MODERNISM SHOW

2010-04-30 Thread Flixspix
Hey Mopoers!

Freeman here.

I have been enlisted to assist Walter Reuben and Woolsey Ackerman in
preparing (okay I'll say it, a spectacular) booth for Walterfilm at the LA
MODERNISM SHOW this weekend at the Barker Hanger at the Santa Monica Airport.
For anyone in the LA area who wants to see a very large selection of his
collection (at least 80%) in person this is a singularly great opportunity.
I cannot begin to describe the quality and scarcity of the posters,
photographs, lobby cards, inserts, window cards and costume sketches available
and on display in a compact, but skillfully designed (500 Square feet of
wall space/ 250 square foot booth. Some of the rarest pieces ever from the
silent to the 1960's are available and better on display. Also the other
vendors there pull out all the stops in their displays of their post 1930's
to 1960's furnishings and art and are nothing less than jaw dropping. The
entire humongous hanger is skillfully sectioned and its really amazing.

So all of you locals (Jeff P, Ricky F, Debi J, Glen T, Sue H, Steve O, Ron
M, etc. etc.) in the LA AREA please drop by, you will not be
disappointed. Woolsey and I will be there all weekend and Walter will be
there for a
few hours each day as well. Its the same admission as the Hollywood
Collector's (Courts Show) $20 (but minus the in-bred autograph weirdos) and
you
will be there for hours pouring over the treasures. Walterfilm's booth is
very easy to find, just look for the ST. JOAN six sheet that leads the
way into our booth.

2010-04-21 Thread Flixspix
Al,
I don't know who you are, but I was in exhibition for most of Miramax's
greatest years. Everyone of my one sheets at Cineplex Odeon Theatres came
directly from Miramax's office in Los Angeles. There was an exhibitor
services representative that most theatre chains would speak directly to. We
also
happened to be one their most major clients as we not only dominated the
art house options in most metro areas, but when they enjoyed their breakout
films, they often looked to our theatres first. So believe me I know where
the hell the posters came from. The incentive to order directly from
Miramax is there was no charge for the accessories.Their philosophy was to
ship directly to the important, top 50 playdates, pick up the costs 100% to
insure saturation of their posters and trailers in important markets.

There may have been a time they were using Consolidated but certainly not
during their escalation into wide releases. Every tube sent to Cineplex
theatres reflected their business address. Consolidated Posters at the
time were dealing with the most obscure and exploitive film releases and I
ordered from them as well as Donald Velde, but it was very, very rare for
studios other than Miramax.

So a big FAIL on where Pulp Fiction posters came from specifically for
the top 15 or 20 National Theatre Chains.

They had to wait for office copies to come from Consolidated. Now when

Yes Bruce, a great fixer-upper. Hell, a knockout fixer-upper. But I have
to say that virtually all the restoration artists working today exceed the
talents of Igor Edelman. Possibly this is a case of better tools
available from which to work. I am speaking of methods, paints, and yes
talent.
But from personal experience on some very rare pieces, I have had more than
half-dozen pieces completely re-done in the last 7 years that were
originally restored by Igor, all during his prime.

Better still, I have to say all the present talent (many of whom were
mentored by Igor or mentored once removed) are all members of MOPO and should
be recognized as doing Igor proud by taking his studio's early successes
and exceeding in artistry what he thought was possible.

Yep,

It was the industry's rush to cheaply capitalize on the last 3D market
that killed it -- they put out all kinds of really bad films that took little
or no advantage of the 3D effect and then advertised them as thhe Ultimate
3D Experience. Theater goers get burned on a couple of those and the fad
dies out.

I'm hoping the film distribution business (and the theater ownership
business) is in such precarious shape right now that they will pressure the
rest
of the industry to come up with real quality 3D content. If most of the
new 3D films released are worth it, this will keep the public coming into the
theaters for another 10 years or so until quality home 3D technology
becomes affordable to the low-budget consumer. If not, we're going to start
seeing cineplexes closing in droves, since most newly-released films are now
available on disc or online in 60 days of less

Rick,
I bought an Epson GT-15000 refurbished (read opened box) for less than
1400.00 (and they threw in a free decent un-opened Epson fax/printer to boot).
The 12 x 17 scan bed takes crystal clear images, very easy to configure
and has not given me any problems. It has been invaluable when offering
lobby cards to even the most discriminating. Possibly approach your local
equivalents to Frye's or Best Buy and see if they have one available. Or
Google the model and see if any available.

[MOPO] The Last Word On Sean Linkenback Scurrilous Attacks

2010-03-25 Thread Flixspix
Mopoers,
Below is a detailed telling of the claims and counter claims regarding the
suit between Jim Gresham and Debi Jacobson. I was in hopes this would have
been adjudicated quietly but because of Sean Linkenback's continued
attacks against DebI Jacobson and Limagerie Gallery without any knowledge of
the
particulars in the case I feel morally bound to respond as I was intimately
aware of the details. If anyone is interest in knowing the details
continue reading. If not feel free to delete. But this is a classic case of
the
damage to a reputation and integrity of a seller mounted by an internet
troll with no knowledge of the details in a case. I would like to think that
everyone now full informed about the case would now form their own
conclusions and not depend on innuendo and outright lies. Further there may
exist lessons here of value for all of you when lawyers become involved
because
as I clearly demonstrate, they are the only people who win.

Sean,
I find myself having to address your damning remarks regarding the
reputation of Debi Jacobson and by default myself. First, how many times did
I write you privately to lay off your scurrilous attacks on parties
involved in a legal case whereupon they could not comment on litigation either
privately or in a public forum...something you damn well knew.

But you persisted, and I have reason to believe motivated by no other
reason than harboring a mean spirited sensibility bordering on
sociopathic. Why was it your business? I have to say I find it hard to
believe that
Jim Gresham would have put you up to this as, based on my numerous personal
dealings, sales and wonderful conversations, he would never stand idly by
and allow some bystander to launch slurs and lies disparaging the reputation
of a gallery/dealer. Especially one from whom he had profited greatly
over the year with substantial sales. Further Jim was held silent as he too
could not weigh in based on his legal action

So if I may review the salient-points of the case. So Sean I start with
one of your many quotes

An honest and reputable dealer would have been proactive.

Sean, using your words that is exactly how this transaction began.
Regarding the card in question, your friend Kerry Haggard wanted to apply a
Frankenstein card towards the purchase of a SON OF FRANKENSTEIN insert Debi
acquired from Jim Gresham and asked that I present it to Debi, as, for lack of
better term, alternative currency When I received the card I called him
to tell him I had a problem with it - that it did not look as vibrant as
the jpegs of similar cards I researched on Heritage's website. He then
claimed Heritage color enhanced and other nonsense. Actually that registered
a
bit of an alarm in my head even having met Kerry in person with Ron Magid
But then again he was on the cover of Movie Collector's World, written up
in news items, truly the good-old boy of the hobby and of course long
recommended by Jim Gresham himself.

Delivered the card to Debi. Kerry did not want her to know he was
acquiring the SON OF FRANKENSTEIN insert for fear she would charge more, a
ridiculous assumption as everyone in the hobby knew her price for the piece.
But
I have assisted other collectors who wished to remain anonymous so that was
not at all unusual.

Upon presentation Debi immediately agreed the card looked washed out and
dull. I left the card with her to consider. A very few days went by and
Haggard was becoming increasingly impatient as expressed on my voice mail
and numerous emails. When I mentioned to Kerry I actually wanted to get
opinions on the card, he angrily objected and did not want in-experienced
yahoos pawing over his card. Well I had it in a sleeve!

( NOTE: THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION I FOUND OUT LATER) At that point Debi
contacted Jim Gresham about the card to gauge his opinion. Evidently, Jim
expressed an interest in the card. With repeated emails to back this up,
Debi clearly stated that she had a problem with the card and truly was not an
expert on Universal Horror lobby cards.

Then Cinevent rolls around and Jim Gresham and Kerry attend. At that
point they agreed to the sale of the card. I immediately receive an email
from
Kerry stating as such. Well I was dumbfounded. Initially Kerry asked me
specifically not to approach Jim regarding the card as he did not want to
hurt his feelings by not offering the card to him first. Secondly I didn't
know that Debi had contacted Jim about the card. Talk about blind-sided!
Anyway these issues were reconciled between Kerry and Jim at Cinevent being
close friends. The two agreed to the purchase face to face.

Kerry immediately notified me by email regarding his sale to Jim. I
immediately emailed him back clearly stating I was not sure that was possible

The Great Baseball Card Bubble Before tech stocks and McMansions, there

Frank Thomas rookie card you stowed away in 1990 is now worth less than a
Happy Meal? Chalk it up to the baseball card bubble of the late 1980s and
early
1990s. In a new book, _Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an

 ,
Dave Jamieson tells the story of how baseball cards evolved from a tobacco
marketing gimmick in the 19th century into a massive, big-money industry of
their own by the late 20th century. In this excerpt, Jamieson explains how
baseball cards first became seen as promising investments, setting the stage
for a decade of speculation and overproduction.
Around the mid-1970s, a small cabal of serious baseball card collectors
grew wise to the fact that their cards had become valuable. Cards had almost
always had prices attached to them, even when prolific collector and
cataloger _Jefferson Burdick_ (http://oldbaseball.com/refs/burdickrev.html)
began sending out his Card Collectors Bulletin in the 1930s. But cards that
had
been worth a few cents were now worth a few bucks, and some of the rarer
specimens, such as _the T206 Honus Wagner_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T206_Honus_Wagner) , were commanding hundreds and
occasionally thousands of
dollars apiece. The number of trade shows sprouting up in the East and the
Midwest testified to a growing market.
By this time, the most aggressive card collectors had started crisscrossing
the country in search of private hoards of cardboard that could be
snatched up at bargain prices. Unlike school kids, these men were well-aware
of
baseball cards' status as a commodity—albeit an undervalued one—and many of
these enthusiasts could credit their early transactions with turning them
into wealthy men later in life.

We'd pick an area of the country—say, Ohio—and take about a 10- or 15-day
road trip, recalls Kit Young, who today owns _a massive mail-order
business in San Diego_ (http://www.kityoung.com/) . You'd take eight or 10
grand
for a four-city hit. We'd rent a car, go around the towns, and we'd have
ads in the local papers saying, 'Old Baseball Cards Wanted. … We'll be at
the Holiday Inn.' You'd get one crack at them, and you paid by cash.

One of Young's old colleagues, dealer _Gar Miller_
(http://www.garmillercards.com/) of Wenonah, N.J., says the excitement was in
wondering what would
walk through the door: You might find some beautiful collection that had
unopened packs of cards. It was just thrilling. For the itinerant and
well-informed hobbyist, it wasn't difficult to get a good deal from the
noncollectors who showed up at the Holiday Inn, considering there were no
price
guides to govern transactions in those days. You didn't know what anything
was worth, explains Miller.
This loophole in the hobby would soon be closed by a statistics professor
from Bowling Green University named _James Beckett III_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Beckett) . Beckett had grown up on Topps
cards in the
1950s, and after lapsing in high school and college, he got back into
collecting
while pursuing a Ph.D. in statistics. Like Young and Miller, Beckett
started checking into motels around the country during the '70s. The more
dealings he had, the more he could see that no one had any firm notion of the
market value of baseball cards.
In 1976, he launched a poll in the hobby newspapers, asking dealers and
collectors how much

[MOPO] 2001: a space odyssey Anecdotal True Stories

2010-03-21 Thread Flixspix
When I was a wee lad, I was utterly blown away by 2001: a space odyssey.
I first saw it in San Antonio where I was born and raised. I remembered
reading about it and even buying a comic book serialization before it ever hit
the town learning much later as to why: the Cinerama engagements were
first roll out, all other cities had to wait on the engagements in a very slow
deliberate roll-out by MGM. Once opened, the film played exclusively at a
General Cinema, 1000 seat theatre over a year, and literally keep getting
moved to other houses for the better part of another year. We are talking
San Antonio guys...where the search for illegal aliens was nothing
special

When I took a job in exhibition in Washington DC that was when I hit
Odyssey nirvana. The theatre chain I worked for owned the 1000 plus seat
UPTOWN THEATRE a true Cinerama Theatre beginning in 1962 located walking
distance from THE NATIONAL ZOO. But what really blew my mind was knowing
the theatre was the host of the World Premiere of 2001: a space odyssey .
The theatre was shut down several months before the premiere and was
completely renovated at a cost just north of $900,00.00 when $900,000.00
really
meant something.mind blowing given the reason for the renovation was
for the premiere of some space movie as told to me by the same manager
still employed at the theatre when I started working for the circuit. (The
Washington Post actually did an article on him when he retired in 1986 two
years after I moved to DC since it was estimated 50% of the population knew
who he was. Plus you can see the theatre in newsreel footage on the special
DVD extras of 2001 but I digress)

Further, since my job had me interacting with all studio publicists,
one named Ted Hatfield who worked for MGM out of NYC at the time (later
moved to Columbia) told me great stories of that horrible/wonderful time. In
DC there were scheduled a series of screenings but the first was the
WORLD PREMIERE and gala reception with NY and LA to follow. This film was a
big, big investment for the studio at the time.

Kubrick agreed to attend but he flexed, probably for his own
amusement and eccentricity, some unusual demands. Can't remember them all,
but he
did insist at the ultra deluxe and traditionally Georgian styled,Hilton
Hotel literally walking distance from the theatre, that one elevator be
his exclusivelyand be painted out completely in purple.

But he was a man under pressure as all of MGM's brass were there
along with a battalion of execs from NASA, McDonnell Douglas, TWA, Hilton and
anyone else that lent their names, technology and sizeable promotional
commitments.

Did I mention there was never a test screening?

Not surprising he took control of the actual presentation demanding
agonizing test runs with the projectionists that went on well into the
evening prior. The Premiere proved a huge media event with the typical
black-tie glitterai of DC and numerous Members Of Congress and Ambassadors in
attendance. It un-spooled without a hitch.

AND IT BOMBED. We are talking B-O-M-B-E-D. Panicked MGM
execs all met after only briefly showing up at the reception and assembled
at the hotel with Kubrick. He actually began to suggest cuts to an
evidently despondent, if not suicidal group of brass. But there were still
two
screenings scheduled the next day---one for national press and a second for
employees of TWA and lower tiered not-so-swells. My friend Ted told me the
vibe of premiere night was nothing short of funereal. He didn't sleep at
all, so got reasonably soused with his cohorts. He showered and went to
the theatre with his equally whacked ad pub cohorts and all braced
themselves for the worst.

The first screening at 10:00 am with critics he felt went okay as many
commented on exiting but it was only about 200-300 critics and as you know
are a very sullen bunch anyway. But at least they didn't seem to be
outright bored. When Ted and gang got outside the theatre to see if anyone
from
TWA, and the other invited, not-so-swells were even going to show
up...the lines stretched blocks down Connecticut Ave in both
directions
way, way more than the theatre could hold And they were shocked. This
time they had to stand bleary eyed through this packed to the rafters
screening (with scores of other people standing with them along the rear and
sides of the main auditorium and sitting jammed in the aisles of the balcony
It was for Ted and his co-publicists as if watching 2001 for the first
time. Instead of the agony of witnessing indifferent, shifting-in-their
seats restlessness from the night prior, this crowd of pilots, corporate AD
and PR flaks, Capitol Hill staffers the crowd was engaged,

Honestly that piece is stunningly rare and a surprise to anyone who collects

But LOTS of people have been sucked in to buying a poster for say,

Bruce,
What about something more stylish like right across the left or right side

Similar to t-shirts I used to get from NEW LINE, SONY PICTURES or WARNER BROS.

image
screens fade fairly dramatically anyway.

This is Bruce. I am sending this e-mail to all those collectors who have
received one or more bonus full-color t-shirts from us in the past (because
you purchased from our mini/major auctions), and I want to get your input
on something concerning the shirts.
Recently, a collector said to us that he would much prefer if the image on
the shirt could be put on the BACK, rather than the front. We checked
with the printer, and that is do-able. But it would require a lot of extra
work on our part, so we don't want to offer this option in the future,
UNLESS some significant number of you would prefer the images on the back
rather than the front.
So please reply to this e-mail solely if you would prefer that any future
bonus t-shirts you win have the image on the BACK, rather than the front. I
f enough of you reply that you would prefer this, then we will offer this
as an option in our next mini/major auction (set to begin April 27th and
29th).
Thanks very much. I also want to remind you that we would very much enjoy
seeing pictures of you (or your children) wearing our t-shirts, especially
if it is in an interesting location or exotic locale. We will put those
pictures on a page on our site (if you don't want your face to be shown, we
can easily crop it out or obscure it).

P.S. I know it will occur to some of you to ask, but we CAN'T have images
on BOTH the front and the back of the shirts! Why? Because these shirts
are imprinted after they are created, so it would require two runs through
the printing press, which would double the cost (shirts that are produced
in huge quantities are printed before they are created, so they can have
images in any location, and it is still only one printing run).

Re: [MOPO] Where is everybody?

2010-03-10 Thread Flixspix

YES, Oscar ratings were up, Kirby but having the slouching, bad postured,
future Lindsay Lohan's did NOTHING for the ratings.from Niki Fink's
Hollywood..

But Tom Sherak should wait to pat himself on the back. The production and
direction of last night's Academy Awards were heavily criticized if not
downright ridiculed. For instance, the emphasis by executive producers Adam
Shankman and Bill Mechanic on packing in young presenters as a ploy to lower
the average age of the audience demographics to what advertisers most prize
didn't pay off. The 18-34 demo was down 3%, while 34-49 was up 9%.
Translation: Taylor Lautner, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus, and Kristen Stewart in
don't-blink-or-you-miss-them doses weren't enough. (The Grammys are the
exception, but there artists like Beyonce, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas
take
the stage and perform.) Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart instead got stuck
in an awkward tribute to the horror genre, which Twilight isn't. That
wasn't the most serious gaffe. After Lautner mentioned that the last horror
film
to be recognized by the Oscars was 1973's The Exorcist, the montage that
followed featured a memorable shot of Anthony Hopkins in a Hannibal Lecter
mask. Because 1991's Silence of the Lambs, of course, won Best Picture.

Re: [MOPO] Glenn Taranto - Stolen Lives THIS JUST IN!

THIS JUST IN!
Faux News Corp-
Glen Taranto will be signing mint, double-sided one sheets for STOLEN
LIVES at the Hollywood Collectors Show on Feb 12th. Florence Henderson, Kirk
Cameron, and Mamie Van Doren have been unceremoniously booted from the
separate executive suite to accommodate the anticipated crowds and long lines
to assure security for the superstar writer-actor-collector-good guy.
Fans will be allowed to camp out overnight beginning the Thursday prior with
sequentially numbered tickets distributed limited to capacity. Female fans
are encouraged to wear freshly washed silks (delicate wash, Downy softened)
to toss to their new hero. Robert Pattinson and Jason Schwartzman are
said to be switching agencies in light of Mr. Taranto's success.

Mr. Taranto's meteoric rise in the entertainment industry and popularity
can already be seen on Ebay. Seller David Lieberman last week boasted sales
of $900 to $1200 dollars per one sheet claiming his were the first off the
press as they came from an industry insider a midget, wearing cotton
gloves to handle the much sought after paper. However these pieces have been
vigorously disputed by a Missouri poker playing/comic-book
collecting/poster clearing house resident/dealer as frauds, as they have been
traced to
Georgia. Another collector, Jiffe Potokar repeated same without any further
insight.

neiljawor...@yahoo.co.uk writes:

Hi all

So, for those who are interested.

I just got back from seeing newly-minted centenarian, Ms Luise Rainer,
talk for 90 minutes at London's National Theatre (to Sir Christopher
Frayling). Unusually, although perhaps characteristically, Rainer had decided
in
advance that she intended to only take questions from the audience (although
Frayling did a great job of posing interesting follow-up questions and kept
things moving along).

The 'Viennese Teardrop' was on fantastic, fun, combative form, happily
killing off rumours that she was in any way Thalberg's protege (I hardly knew
him! He met me at a party!') and downplaying her role in getting Brecht
out of Nazi Germany ('He was already in Sweden!').

The Brecht story was one of the best anecdotes. Apparently Luise thought
he was a genius and so happily signed an affidavit to speed his entry into
the States. Brecht was so grateful and enchanted by Rainer that he wrote
The Caucasion Chalk Circle for her. When Frayling asked Rainer why she had
never appeared in this or any other Brecht plays, she laughed and said it
was because after she met Brecht she realised she couldn't stand him!

Rainer was also fascinating on the subject of her two Oscars, claiming
that - for a newly-arrived foreigner to the US from Europe - these awards
didn't really mean that much. Rainer says that director Max Reinhardt running
up to her after a rehearsal to say 'Rainer, how did you do that?!' meant
more to her than any Oscar.

Rainer was also very interesting on her 'genius' husband Clifford Odets,
who tried to, but could not, get her interested in politics: 'I know the
difference between good and bad, rich and poor. But when he gave me Marx's
book I read three pages and gave it back.'

The best anecdote was about Rainer and Odets' honeymoon in Mexico. Odets
religiously wrote at night (and slept during the day) and so it came to pass
that, on their wedding night, his double oscar-winning bride was banished
downstairs to the hotel bar. Here, she fell in with a large group of
vacationing midgets who were drunk and who decided to revere the 'giant'
Rainer
as their God. They claimed that they had a miniature version of Rainer in
their ranks which they proudly introduced to the actress. Rainer fled to
the beach, where she stumbled across Odets. Thrilled to see him, she tried
to leap into his arms, but he ducked out of the way fearing injury and she
ended up in a heap on the sand.

The evening ended with Frayling asking Rainer why she doesn't wear a watch
(she never has). Rainer told him she doesn't need one. When Frayling
asked her how she knows what time it is, she looked at him as if he was an
idiot, 'Instinct! she announced, Instinct and intuition!

Rainer received a standing ovation at the end and was completely at ease
and animated throughout. What an absolute pleasure to have a front row seat
to such an event. I hope the NT will release a transcript to compensate
for my sketchy memory.

Apologies to MOPOers for who this is way, way OT!

Best to you all

Neil

PS I just remembered that, when she was asked for her memories of her
favourite leading men, Rainer told the audience that her favourite was not who
they might think.

With everyone suitably intrigued and waiting to hear who it was, Rainer
threw her hands into the air with exasperation and announced that she had
forgotten his name. She then flashed her eyes at the audience and shouted
'Give me a chance! I am a hundred you know! Cue uproar and once the
laughter had subsided, she announced that she HAD now remembered and that it
was
Melvyn Douglas.

Imagine my shock when I saw that tomorrow she turns 70!

She was 27 when she made The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman was 30, and Anne

hard to find mint unused! Most were printed in the US for use overseas. All

very low prices. Included films are:

TOY STORY
V FOR VENDETTA (awesome images)
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
THE NATURAL (Redford at bat, sparks raining!)
TOP GUN (you can be my wing man NO YOU CAN BE...)
INCREDIBLES (incredible character set!)

[MOPO] I Just Got This Pricing ANNOUNCEMENT From Fleabay

2010-01-26 Thread Flixspix
Coming March 30: 20¢ Fixed Price Insertion Fees with full search exposure,
FREE pictures, new low fees for Auction-style listings

Dear flixspix:

The upfront cost of selling on eBay is about to be dramatically reduced
with our lowest Insertion Fees ever. I wanted to personally let you know
about this exciting change and how it can help you in particular.

In short, on March 30, 2010 we are changing the fee structure to provide a
range of fee options designed to improve profitability for sellers of all
sizes. New standard fees are being simplified and work best for sellers
that sell occasionally.

Higher volume sellers like you will want to choose from one of _three new
eBay Stores subscription packages_
(http://rover.ebay.com/rover/4/0/8?eecl=1eesi=USi=175ac90eb03II217baII3c1a88II175ac4eadd5eepc=)
  offering Fixed
Price Insertion Fees as low as 3¢ and reduced rates for auctions for a
monthly subscription fee.

Based on your past year of selling activity, we recommend the _new Basic
Store subscription package_
(http://rover.ebay.com/rover/4/0/8?eecl=1eesi=USi=175ac90eb04II217baII3c1a88II175ac4eadd5eepc=)
 .

For just $15.95 a month you get:
* Fixed Price with full search exposure for just 20¢ Insertion Fees
with Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same.
*   FREE pictures
* Discounted fees on Auction-style listings
Only one Fixed Price format
Full search exposure is key because starting March 30, there will be
just one Fixed Price listing format on eBay. Store Inventory Format listings
will automatically become regular Fixed Price listings with the same
duration and renew at the new rates--and they'll surface in search results
right
along with all other listings.

Subscribe before February 16 and save!
We want to make sure you have plenty of time to get ready. _Subscribe now_

[MOPO] OT Golden Globes Tribute To Martin Scorsese

2010-01-21 Thread flixspix
If any of you missed the rather turgid Golden Globes Ceremony, good for
you. However there was one great thing and it was the tribute to Martin
Scorsese. What was great (aside from his acceptance speech) was the
astonishingly well edited compilation of his career in film. I think everyone
on
MOPO will enjoy watching it. And I have to add. note the absolute
humility and expression in the great director's eyes at the end of DeCaprio's
introduction. Really, worth checking out

naturally, has led to unforeseen issues. To wit ... I need to gain approval

Iconic (and I use the term loosely) posters plainly denied:

Night of the Living Dead, (and nearly any monster poster)

Nude on the Moon (and just about any sexploitation poster)

An example in particular: After getting 'I Love Trouble' past a cursory
inspection, I receive a rather terse question:

Is that a gun?

To which I replied ... Well ... yeah, but it is small and you didn't see
it initially ... you think I could get a pass on this one?

S ... everything is flowing smoothly, we are choosing among available
wall space for an ideal location for I Love Trouble ... and then ...

Wait a minute ... are those nipples?

Aa ... married life, we should all be so lucky.

P.S. I apologize for not having an image of I Love Trouble readily

[MOPO] FS Hammer UK Qud Collection End Today In 10 Hours

2010-01-09 Thread Flixspix
Hey Mopoer's!
My 9 separate auctions of UK (country or origin) Hammer Quads and 1
sheets end today in about 10 hours. Some great titles still at well below
market prices.QUATERMASS II, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, FRANKENSTEIN AND
THE MONSTER FROM HELL and others are still great bargains to be had. Below
is a link to the gorgeous PHANTOM OF THE OPERA quad. Then click seller's
other auctions to view the other eight.

Thanks for looking! Many of these do not come up very often, if at
all, in any auction. So with all humility, I say pounce on them now for when
these are gone, I have no other UK Hammer quads or one sheets to offer.

The truly rare one is Quatermass II (Enemy From Space) from 1957. It
is still below $400 and its value truly is (or should be) much higher.

[MOPO] OT FAKE PICASSSOS ON EBAY

2010-01-06 Thread Flixspix

This is going to make even more difficult to sell my yard gnome by
Michelangelo.
CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago man pleaded guilty Tuesday to swindling at
least 250 people out of more than $1 million through the sale of counterfeit
prints advertised as the work of Pablo Picasso and other major contemporary
artists.
Michael Zabrin of Northbrook admitted sometimes paying between $1,000 and
$1,500 for counterfeit limited edition fine art prints produced in Spain and
Italy and reselling them on eBay for many times that amount.
In his signed plea agreement with prosecutors, 57-year-old Zabrin said he
would send away to his Italian source for fake Picassos, saying: I need
some P's. When he needed bogus works by Roy Lichtenstein, he would say: I
need some L's.
In the summer of 2004, Zabrin purchased eight counterfeit works
purportedly by Marc Chagall for $20,000 which he resold at no less than three
times
his cost, according to the plea agreement which was presented to Judge
Robert M. Dow Jr.
Zabrin agreed in the document that he caused foreseeable losses of more
than $1 million but less than $2.5 million with works turned out by the
Spanish guy and another supplier in Italy. He also admitted trading fake art
works with other dealers.
Zabrin was among seven people charged in March 2008 on charges of trading
in fake works by Picasso, Lichtenstein, Chagall, Joan Miro and Salvador
Dali. He was the first to be convicted. Charges against the six others are
pending.
Zabrin pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of
$250,000. But prosecutors calculated that under federal sentencing
guidelines Zabrin could be facing a prison term in the 10- to 13-year range.
Dow set March 23 for sentencing.
According to the plea agreement, Zabrin had been previously convicted of
telephone harassment, mail fraud and retail theft.
Zabrin admitted conducting 280 sales of fraudulent art on eBay through his
companies, Fineartmasters and ZFineartmasters. When some customers
realized they had bought fakes, they returned them. Zabrin acknowledged that
he
then waited a few months and resold them to someone else.

[MOPO] HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE.....

2009-12-24 Thread Flixspix

The recent postings of favorite Holiday movies made me recall this
excellent article on how the song immortalized in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS Have
Yourself A Merry Little Christmas sung by Judy Garland actually was actually
quite bleak if not all together depressing when originally written. I
thought everyone might enjoy reading the original lyrics and how it was
changed, with the cooperation of the composer. In Googling to find the
article, I counted well over a 100 singers who have recorded this song.
Wow,
the impact of film on popular culture cannot be underestimated...

There's Something About Merry
The history of a popular holiday song -- How ''Have Yourself a Merry
Little Christmas'' became one of the season's most beloved songs

By _Chris Willman_
(http://search.ew.com/EWSearch/ew/search/search.html?type=ew:Chris+Willman;) |
Jan 08, 2007

There are two Christmas anthems locked in a struggle for the nation's soul.
One, the perennial leader, is the Nat King Cole-popularized ''The
Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),'' a glowing portrait of
America in heavenly, secular peace. And then we have the challenger: ''Have
Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,'' which this year leaped to No. 2 on
ASCAP's
annual list of the most performed holiday songs. ''Chestnuts'' has plenty
going for it: embers, tots, reindeer, an assurance of everything in its
right place, and that 1-to-92 target demographic. But it can't hold a candle
to
the depth and richness of ''Merry Little Christmas,'' which wins our
hearts by celebrating a quality that's even more intrinsic to the season:
emotional ambivalence.
'''Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' manages to be happy and sad at
the same time, hopeful but full of melancholy, as all the best Christmas
songs are,'' says Bette Midler, who sings it on her new CD, Cool Yule. And the
song's fascinatingly tangled history has left it with several very
different sets of lyrics, from the near-suicidal to the downright ebullient.
There's even a recent ''sacred'' rewrite, ''Have Yourself a Blessed Little
Christmas.'' Which one you prefer may be the truest Rorschach test of your
yuletide temperament.
Hugh Martin, the song's 92-year-old writer, is calling from a California
studio where he's working on demos for a new musical. He's curious to know
who's done ''Merry Little Christmas'' well this year. Though the latest
interpreters include Sarah McLachlan, James Taylor, and Aimee Mann, he's most
excited to learn that his song has finally merited a hair-metal cover.
''Twisted Sisters, is that the group's name? Ha ha ha. That's a hoot!''
In 1943, Martin and Ralph Blane were an already successful songwriting team
hired to pen the songs for the movie musical Meet Me in St. Louis, which
would pair Judy Garland with her future husband, director Vincente Minnelli.
Though Martin and Blane shared credit for the tune, Martin was actually
the sole writer of ''Merry Little Christmas,'' and a stubborn one. For the
now-famous scene in which Garland and her little sister, a 7-year-old
Margaret O'Brien, are despondent over the prospect of moving away from their
cherished home, he wrote an initial set of lyrics that were almost comically
depressing. Among the never-recorded couplets — which he now describes as
''hysterically lugubrious'' — were lines like: ''Have yourself a merry little
Christmas/It may be your last Faithful friends who were dear to us/Will
be near to us no more.''
''I often wondered what would it have been like if those lyrics had been
sung in the movie,'' laughs O'Brien, now 69. ''But about a week before we
were to shoot the scene where Judy sings it to me, she looked at the lyrics
and said, 'Don't you think these are awfully dark? I'm going to go to Hugh
Martin and see if he can lighten it up a little.'''
As Martin tells it, he initially balked at changing the words. ''They said,
'It's so dreadfully sad.' I said, 'I thought the girls were supposed to be
sad in that scene.' They said, 'Well, not that sad.' And Judy was saying,
'If I sing that to that sweet little Margaret O'Brien, they'll think I'm a
monster!' And she was quite right, but it took me a long time to get over
my pride. Finally, Tom Drake [the young male lead], who was a friend,
convinced me. He said, 'You stupid son of a b! You're gonna foul up your
life
if you don't write another verse of that song!'''
Martin finally gave in, coming up with a new, somewhat less downbeat lyric.
As sung in the movie, ''Merry Little Christmas'' is a buck-up ballad that
imagines the possibility of a bright future but finally admits, in the
song's most powerful line, that ''until then, we'll have to muddle through
somehow.''
Liza Minnelli (Vincente Minnelli and Judy Garland's daughter) remembers her
father's stories about telling Martin, '''Nooo,

[MOPO] Way OT: BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN

2009-12-14 Thread Flixspix
Mopoers!

Off topic but maybe not. Tonight at 8:00 PM EST (5:00 Pacific)
Turner Classics is airing Frank Capra's jaw-dropping and all together amazing
early drama, THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN. I bring this up as many on
this site have commented on their fondness for Barbara Stanwyck and for my
money, this one is hard to beat. It is NOT available on DVD and rarely airs
at a decent time.

BITTER TEA opened RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and BOMBED, pulled I believe
after one week and quickly replaced with another Capra great LADY FOR A DAY

(talk about back-up!!). Anyway TEA's subject of miscegenation (or the
mongrelization of the races as it was known in the South) was still very
much taboo in 1933 and probably not what the Depression era masses were
looking for as an entertaining trip to the movies in spite of showing in the
greatest Temple To Cinema ever created. (Stanwyck also starred in BABY FACE
the same year, talk about an actress with cajones)

It took nearly 60 years for the film to be re-discovered and now has a
hard-core legion of devotees. If you have ever wondered why the lobby
cards cost $800 and up for such an obscure title watching it will explain a
lot. Film costars Nils Asther (in amazing make-up) as General Yen, a
Chinese Warlord who plays his character so deliciously you will think of Anton
Walbrook in the RED SHOES or other such career defining performances.

Film is very much of the time (xenophobic, well yes) but it melodrama
at its best and is stunningly art directed and photographed. I promise,
you will not be disappointed giving this film a look. LOST HORIZON follows
so for a Monday evening you could not ask for a better double bill.

I actually wrote this seller when he first listed that what he had in fact

Re: [MOPO] BIG News in Universal Horror Fraud Case

2009-12-05 Thread Flixspix
Jeff,
Let's clarify your message.

1. You wanted a trimmed poster restored but instead of you yourself going
in to the gallery you gave to a friend and longtime client of the gallery
(which speaks to some degree a satisfaction of their work.)

The burning question, if so particular, why didn't you go in yourself? But
you didn't let's proceed.

2. Poster would have had to have had partial restoration to one side and a
completely new border. . a border that could not in any way have
matched the other three sides due to variations in tone and texture. The
evening out is quite a common touch up or it would have looked a bit odd
don't you think? A whitish right hand stripe that all but blends into the
white of the excess linen, and then varying shades of toned off white to beige
original paper on the remaining three borders.

3. Since you didn't take the poster in yourself you have no idea what was
discussed between your mule and the gallery. You may have given
instructions to your mule, but you have no way of knowing if that was conveyed
clearly
or to your specific detail.

4. Upon completion you were displeased and posted on several sites and
emails expressing your discontent (this was like two years ago right?)

5. She asked you to return the poster as any reputable linen backer (or
business) would offer and make it right by you. However you flatly refused
with no rational explanation save for some vague paranoia that it might be at
further risk..?

6. You found another backer who is a very talented restorer and a truly
wonderful person (authenticator, maybe not so much) I take no issue with
that .

7. But you claim that non archival ink was used in the repair. That I
categorically question as you say Poster Mountain was able to
correct...what with more over painting? ..no they were able to
remove the
balance correction. I doubt seriously his claim of non-water based paint.
Actually that isn't true, I doubt your claim on non-water based paint use.

8. Now you claim you were due a refund. Never mind not being present upon
delivery, not giving specific instructions to your likes and dislikes
directly to the gallery, having no way in knowing exactly the instructions or
directions expressed by your mule ( a longtime satisfied customer) and not
returning in person so as to give the gallery an opportunity to make it
right to your specific wishes.

9. Do you expect say an automotive shop to issue you a refund simply by
a phone call because you had a friend drive your car in for an oil change
and you aren't convinced or certain they used the right viscosity standard
of your specific desire? And then when they offer to you to bring in your
car for another oil change, you refuse saying you don't trust them with
your car, post on a website their crappy service and go to Jeffi-Lube ?

My FIRST linen backing experience was with Jacobson and her outfit.. she
was recommended by a collector friend, who used her almost exclusively.

Her mystery, unnamed restorer did SLOPPY work to the piece my friend had
taken to her.. first, he airbrushed ALL the borders on this piece--this was
NOT asked for. In addition, the paint used was a NON water based paint, so
even if i wanted it removed, i cannot. There was airbrush over spray and
then when both myself and the friend who recommended (and who took my piece to
her), and asked why the entire border was painted and made to look like a
freshly painted wall, she lied to my friend / her client and said that the
complete border painting had NOT been done, when it was obvious it had
been. I was horrified, to say the least, when i first unrolled the linen. And
this all occurred because 1/4 had been trimmed along the length of ONE
border and I wanted that restored and blended in with the 80 year old paper
(this is a prewar belgian, from 1927).

Because of this debacle, i discovered John Davis and Poster Mountain. I
was actually on my way to show debi and decided i was NOT leaving this piece
in her hands a second time, choosing to go straight to PM, instead. He
corrected the over spray (luckily, it did not get onto the main artwork) and
he
was the one who told me that the paint used was non water based.

I will not recommend her or her restorer to ANYONE.

As this was the first piece i ever had backed ..the experience with her
and her outfit was not what i paid for.

Her only comment to me was that i never brought it back to her so she
could see and correct the mistake, and i was not going to get ANY kind of
refund. Like i would trust to leave it with them a second time.

Talk about lame ass customer service. They do incorrect work to a rare
piece, use the wrong paint that cant be removed and I'm

[MOPO] Three Sheet SAUL BASS

2009-12-04 Thread Flixspix
Speaking of 3 sheets. I have a near flawless ADVISE AND CONSENT presently
on Ebay, archivally mounted on linen with the most minor of touch-ups
necessary where the two panels meet and some evening out along white borders.

At $299 with a $350 buy it now I think (humbly) it is bargain priced.
Nothing showcases Saul Bass better than a 3 sheet. And this piece does say
vertically next to the hand, designed by Saul Bass which he only
allowed on posters that were not altered or compromised by studio flacks.

[MOPO] OT But Maybe Not.... Top 5 Posters Of The Decade

2009-12-03 Thread Flixspix
As some of you may be aware, we are coming to the end of first 10 years of
the 21st Century (Damn does time fly by! Just seems like yesterday Bruce
was giving me grief for listing a Breakfast At Tiffany's for $2500 :)

So lists are being assembled, best movies, best television, best
non-fiction, best theatre, best music etc. So I ask now everyone to
participate
in something of consequence to the hobby/business. What are the top 5 US
movie posters between 2000 and 2009 and the single best Foreign Poster.
Who knows? This may help usher in the handful that might actually sell for
something in the decades to follow if word gets out on the selections by
this savvy group.

I must stress, if someone picks a poster and you agree, don't change
your choices to be different. It will be interesting to see if some degree
of consensus manifests.

I am only suggesting to list 5 (and one foreign poster) 10 can really
become cumbersome. So select five and rank 1 (best) through 5.

I'll step up to the plate first:

TOP 5 US POSTERS

#1 MATRIX RELOADED holifoil (teaser full vertical streams)
#2 WALK THE LINE (flaming guitar)
#3 THE DARK KNIGHT(Ledger/Joker Why so serious?)
#4 CROUCHING TIGER (vast rocky wasteland advance)
#5 MOULIN ROUGE (illuminated solo windmill at night)

BEST FOREIGN POSTER

[MOPO] Dave's WOODSTOCK

2009-11-29 Thread Flixspix
Dave,
I don't want to join a bashing. You work hard for your business and not
shy about making inquiries regarding consigned material and the like. And
there are a lot of informed dealers on this site that have the benefit of
years and years (and some years x 5) experience who are more than willing to
take the time to point out anomalies.

However, regarding this WOODSTOCK poster I have to mention the following
details I can impart.

First, studio poster give-aways was something that didn't happen when
WOODSTOCK was released in 1970. This was something that didn't really happen
until the mid to late 1980's and rarely, VERY RARELY were they one sheet
size. They were what were called mini-onesheets. Speaking from one with
20 years in exhibition, they were cumbersome to give away due to small
boxoffice windows. Or more to the point, executing the distribution of say
the first 50-100 people in line receive a poster based on a national
promotion had to have a dedicated usher to manage. And trust me these promo
posters literally got creased and misshapen just in the hand out. That you
feel strongly your poster is such a promotional piece wouldn't it make
sense that there would be history of these in the marketplace rather than only
just recently? Even if there was a find doesn't negate history of
previously issued promo posters Think how many would have been printed
nationally ...

Second. Could it be a well preserved wild posting one sheet? Well no.
I had two copies of the wild posted one sheet used for the release of the
film and after asking scores of old-timers both in movie and rock posters
the wild posted poster was the logo onesheet. (the reconfigured logo by
Skolnick set inside a blue circle). Now I am aware that some theatres were
sent these and used as ADVANCE ONE SHEETS.I have had two, and they were
folded and stamped on back. May I also mention they were splitting along
folds even though not used.

Third. There was a company known as Spencer's gifts that regularly sold
full sized movie posters for hit movies during this time as well as record
stores. But frequently you would see a licensing company at bottom edge.
BUT NOT ALWAYS. That said I also must remind that a video store called
SUNCOAST in the late 90's also sold a huge inventory of posters of
contemporary film titles in rolled single sided condition and 27 x 41 if
originally
so. I have always thought that is why there are so many STAR WARS onesheets
rolled came from this source...and there was no licensing
information company on any of the ones I remember seeing.

Fourth No one has mentioned that the Anniversary of WOODSTOCK was
earlier this year. Is it not possible that a plethora of these were printed
in
anticipation of bump in popularity for this title? That may explain Bruce
and others receipt of themAs for a bump in popularity I can tell you
there wasn't as I sold my second WOODSTOCK advance just at about the time of
the anniversary and barely got $300 ON LINEN.

If reviewing the above notes and circumstances and still you feel your
poster remains free and clear of these possible reasons for
being.then by all means proceed.

Re: [MOPO] Avatar

2009-11-27 Thread Flixspix
While I think its kind of fun to read fan-boy dismissals of Cameron's
latestin fact I have read comparisons liking it to Fern Gully meets Dances
With Wolves which arguably a case could be made. But I think one has to
give Cameron the benefit of the doubt and allow him the chance to present
his world, and to view it in the format he is intending (a revolutionary 3D
presentation.) While I may have originally been a bit taken aback by the
Navi (those blue characters) the world Cameron has placed them in has me
completely intrigued. And the animal creatures I thought looked really
great.

Remember, Yoda originally looked a little silly, ET looked like a mutant
turtle in search of a shell, the prawns in DISTRICT 9 looked truly
derivative, and specific to Cameron, literally days before the exhibitor
screenings of TITANIC no less than the NY Times and Time Magazine were
predicting a
cinematic sinking the likes never seen in history.

It remains for me the most anticipated film of the Holidays with UP IN THE
AIR second.ALVIN AND THE CHIMPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKLE ..not so much

[MOPO] FS Fahrenheit 451 Country Of Origin

2009-11-27 Thread Flixspix

Wanted to offer this first to fellow MOPO'ers.

I received a consignment of an original Fahrenheit 451 French
affichette. Poster measures 24 x 33 and is in very fine, unrestored, folded
condition (two small dings in black areas)

Why I am offering here first is I wanted to see if anyone was interested
in acquiring it framed. This is a professional, custom framing, double
matted natural linen matte with lapiz blue inside matte (which matches exactly
the helmet and flame thrower of Oskar Werner) with museum grade plexi, not
even three years old. Framed it measures 29 x 37 and truly its a
compelling piece for this landmark science fiction film directed by the great
Francois Below is the link to framed poster. Its a beauty and ready to
hang.
It just seemed a waste to chunk a beautiful custom framing specific to
this poster to list on Ebay unframed.

I sold client the affichette originally and guarantee its authenticity.
Poster last sold at Heritage for $130 almost two years ago So you see
this is a strikingly good deal if you are familiar with the pricing of custom
framing.
Poster with frame $200.00
Shipping $25 ground UPS within the Continental US only (consignor will
pick up balance)

Obviously my packing of framed poster will be nothing short of a work of
art.

I was actually trying to make a funny as the NY Times and Slate On Line
both really came down this year on the origins and true horror that is green
bean casserole. Evidently it was totally created and pushed by Campbell's
in the mid 1950's and has become one of Turkey Days standard side dishes.
Campbell's canned grean beans and Campbell's cream of mushroom soup
with Campbell's fried onion on top.

Evidently most people who reside in Red States think the Pilgrims brought
it over.

[MOPO] OT Roger Corman

2009-11-16 Thread Flixspix
Well good grief, yes Roger Corman who ushered in films directed at young
boomers and then those boomer's kids (something approaching a jaw-dropping
300 plus films) but whose legacy lies truly in the directors he gave their
first leg up Coppola, Scorsese, Bogdonavich, De Palma, Howard, and more
got an honorary Oscar. .but c'mon I think the real news is the
legendary Lauren Bacall and the truly great Gordon Willis received honorary
Oscars as well. Like Barbara Stanwyck and Deborah Kerr, it astounds me
she never received an Oscar. So I think a round of whistles for Ms.
Bacall, and we all know how to whistle just put your lips together. As
for
Mr. Willis groundbreaking photography for the Godfather Trilogy and
films for Woody Allen including Manhattan and Zelig will stand the test time
long after we have sold or last poster from one of his films.

This was actually big news here in Los Angeles because this was the first
time the Academy orchestrated a separate ceremony to honor these greats
(also the rarely awarded Irving G. Thalberg Award was given to John Calley
whose health precluded him from attending who has produced such classics from
The Loved One and The Cincinnati Kid, early in his career to Catch 22,
Remains Of The Day and of late The Da Vinci Code/Angels and Demons and one of
the nicest and beloved leaders in the industry due also in no small part
his years of executive work at various studios) so that the appropriate
amount of time could be devoted to each and every one as opposed to being
shoe-horned in that behemoth of a televised ceremony. The dinner hosted by
the
Board of Governors of the Academy in the ballroom of the Kodak Theatre was
as close to a whose who, platinum crowd of luminaries that proved both
joyous and emotional for all who attended. Yes, snippets will be shown during
next years broadcast.

[MOPO] Sean You Are A Friend But You Are Way Out Of Line

2009-10-06 Thread Flixspix
Sean,
This is a private matter between Jim G and Debi J.This was NOT just a
sale of a card and in fact far from it. Your so called outing reflects
poorly on you and is really inappropriate. You do not know all the facts, and
no I will not go into it with you privately or on this board as its no
one's business but Jim's and Debi's. Both are consummate professionals and
they don't need or appreciate you are anyone else meddling like nosey
church women. They will be working it out between them as they have
transacted
sales well into the tens of thousands in the past and are good friends.
Really, Sean this is so beneath your character and the other wise helpful
comments you contribute on this board. Get back on track..

still your friend,

[MOPO] What About Record Lobby Card Prices?

2009-09-18 Thread Flixspix
Okay, excluding the recent spate of bogus cards from the Bernie Madoff
of Universal Horror (and a couple of MARK OF THE VAMPIREs thrown in for
seasoning). What are the records for lobby cards? Arguably on a per square
inch basis they confound belief at times. Figure a lobby card is 14% the
size of a onesheet well do the math regarding the few I have listed if
that pricing extrapolated equally to their onesheet.

I do know of a WIZARD OF OZ title card selling for 15,000.00 about three
years ago and even more impressive, a PUBLIC ENEMY scene card (Cagney
shoving that infamous grapefruit into the face of Mae Clarke) sold privately
for $25,000.00. Further, I had the great privilege of brokering a CALIGARI
CARD and a WHITE ZOMBIE CARD each North of 11 grand but are their any
others that people can recollect?

Certainly I am aware of sets of lobby cards hitting 50,000.00, 80,000.00
and some very recently a bit higher, but I am talking single cards. When
you think of a rectangular piece of paper not even large enough to use as a
placemat, it does give one pauseand don't even get me started on
mini-window cards!

But then again, what is the size of a T-206 Honus Wagner card with a
Piedmont tobacco company back. ...

[MOPO] Star Trek Poster Advance

2009-09-10 Thread Flixspix
Rick,

The STAR TREK poster you have was a one per playdated theatre
ultra-advance onesheet created for the film and shipped almost 11 months in
advance of
opening. What made it quite unique was it was one of the first posters to
incorporate foil within the letters of the title. Unfortunately the poster
did not measure 27 x 41 and while this was a bit ahead of theatres
switching almost exclusively to back lit poster cases (which wouldn't have
worked
as it was not transparent), it still did not fit into snap-lock poster
cases either because it was too small. So in most cases they were taped on
the wall of theatre box offices or they didn't get put up at all. They are
extremely scarce but Trekkers are notoriously cheap and simply don't put up
the bucks to purchase proportionally given the scarcity of the poster and
its quality (thick paper, glossy varnish, nifty design of the title with
starburst.) If you get $200 to $300 for it consider yourself doing great
with the piece.

[MOPO] THE HAMMER DROPPED AS SWIFTLY AS POSSIBLE

2009-08-29 Thread Flixspix
To everyone on MOPO,
freeman here

I have thought it best to stay out of the fray of the discussions
regarding the fraudulent paper recently brought to the fore as I was mentioned
in
the original civil suit.

But now I feel obliged to recognize publicly the swift actions, expense
and rightful actions of Ron Magid. As questionable paper ( minty whites,
hairy belts, fuzzy ALIENs you know them) have been passed along with nary a
slap on the wrist even when reasonably knowledgeable by many the individuals
responsible, it is Ron who was the first to aggressively pursue
investigation and action of this latest breech to the business and I think its
 a
swell thing for all of you to know.

Indeed to assuage any fears presently, the defendant more than understood
his alleged distribution and sale of fraudulent materials was going to
result into a thunder clap of litigation in May. Ron, armed with information
from Profiles and myself, immediately had an independent expert in
restoration (Carol Tincup, well regarded for over a decade) to investigate
the
materials (all had to be de-mounted and the paper carefully inspected) at his
own expense. When discovered all frauds, Ron immediately hired a lawyer
and as swiftly as possible filed his lawsuit and awaited servicing of said
law suit. During that period no discussions were allowed as dictated by his
counsel and truly it was agonizing how long it took for these things to
work their way through the courts before one could make public. But within
the very small circle of collectors who deal/purchase high-end horror, a
cautious pause immediately seemed to form without any specifics shared as
many began to have their purchases coming from the defendant examined. Also
knowing eyes monitored carefully listings on EBAY again by concerned
Mopo'ers.

So please understand everyone that legal actions were initiated, as soon
as the fraudulent items discovered. Further the great majority of the
fraudulent paper did not find widespread dissemination to the public, save
for
4 instances already identified, and two private sales again identified.
This kind of integrity and swift action is being demonstrated throughout
this circle of collectors and dealers because the health and confidence of
authentic materials for the future is dependant on doing so.

And may I please add before gossip, innuendo and ridiculous scenarios
are posted to inflame and strike fear for the benefit of those outside
this very small circle of high-end horror dealers, that discretion, courtesy
and common sense would be appreciated while the legal processes bring to
justice the perpetrators involved. The two plaintiffs are only following to
the letter their counsel because nothing short of swift justice is being
pursued. Lets not blow it for them.

I do see a positive course for the immediate future that should impact us
all when selling/collecting high end paper. That is the conveyance of COA,
provenance or some such back up with respect to restoration. Case in
point I just sold a SON OF FRANKENSTEIN lobby card with a before restoration
and after restoration and who performed the minimum work and listed on
Ebay. It was purchased by an incredibly informed dealer on Mopo and I assume
that kind of transparency was recognized as responsible business (
please, hold your applause:)

In fact even further to the point, I have just brokered three high-end
horror cards, and even though in jaw dropping near to mint and unrestored
condition, I am having them inspected by Carol Tincup and authenticated with a
letter to convey in case down the line the buyer ever wanted to sell. A
hassle, sure, smart I should think so.

This just might be something other sellers and certain internet auction
houses will want to embrace when handling rare pieces as technology has
really advanced to the point of paper reproduction combined with nefarious
restoration being so good it has fooled even the most experienced dealers and

collectors. Presently with this unfortunate violation of all things holy
in this business it is certainly in my opinion a responsible course of
action to restore confidence for the immediate and future health of the hobby.

[MOPO] FS The Oldest Poster By Two Years I Have Ever Listed

2009-08-06 Thread Flixspix
I have listed and sold some very old paper, yes indeed, but this one takes
the ring by two years (1915) with respect to theatre exhibition. Yes,
Bruce had one recently in his major-mini auction, but this one may, for
some, be even more appealing. So is it rare? Yes, but will settle for VERY

VERY VERY SCARCE.
