[mou-net] Minnesota Bird Checklists
As many of you know, I have been providing birding checklists for Minnesota birds to Minnesota birders for many years. As prices for printing and mailing have gone up I have tried to keep the costs of the checklists at or even slightly below my costs. I have decided to make a change to save costs for everyone. I am now providing access to everyone to print the checklists yourselves - effectively reducing your costs to just the paper and printing for the quantity you want (eliminating mailing costs). You can now obtain a PDF file of the checklist from my website that you can use to print your own checklists when you need them and in the quantity you desire. There is no charge for using the design I create, which includes having the latest names and taxonomic order established annually by the AOS (formerly AOU) and ABA and the regular, casual and accidental species assignments as identified by the MOURC that are assigned every 5 years. To access the checklist go to my website (below) and check out the Checklist info under Minnesota Birding Information. Enjoy the checklists and good birding. [mou-net] Tufted Duck at Duluth
I was able to find the Tufted Duck right along the shore right next to the aquarium (with the Goldeneyes). Had views from the road on the NE side and also from the pagoda like structure from the SW. The latter is the better view. Bird seen about 9:30. [mou-net] Fwd: [eBird Alert] Minnesota Rare Bird Alert
I was able to find the Common Gallinule at the town of Ellendale (S of Owatonna) reported by Paul Suchanak on e-Bird. Actually I spotted two of them. The viewing is the best from the road to the sewage ponds on the east side of the railroad tracks - accessed by turning north on the east side of the grain elevator. Go just past the ballfield to gain elevation to see over the tracks. [mou-net] Red Lake & Marshall/Polk birds
This morning the Cinnamon Teal was still at the Agassiz impoundment. The female associating with it appeared to have a shorter bill. There was still one American Avocet at the Red Lake rice paddies - on the east side of 350th Ave (N of 150 St). There were no Whimbrels at the gravel pit. The 20 or so Marbled Godwits that were there yesterday were also gone today. [mou-net] FW: [mou-net] Black-legged Kittiwakes- Olmsted County
I stopped over at the landfill reservoirs 5:50AM this morning and spotted 5 gulls flying around at the East Landfill Reservoir. There was one alternate plumage Bonaparte's Gull (with black head) and the others were ring-bill size, one of which appeared to be a 2nd year ring-bill with a very black leading upper edge of the outer half of the wing. The birds eventually moved over closer to me and then continued over me and left the reservoir. These may have been some of the birds Steve spotted as the storm was moving in last night (and may have retreated back to the reservoir because of the thunderstorm). I also heard and saw the Great-tailed Grackle at the usual spot in the willows north of the culvert. This was about 6AM. The bird was viewable on the back side of the willows on a leafless tree that sticks out a bit over the reeds - viewed from the culvert as well as further south. I moved over to the South Landfill Reservoir and searched for the Black-necked Stilts without finding any (although they are probably there - just hiding in the grasses in the SW corner of the reservoir). I searched from both the south and north roads. Although the birds were first only seen from the south road there was at least one that has been viewable from the north road at the far west end. I saw it yesterday walking along the south side from one end of the visible shoreline to the other end and then retracing its steps (twice walking right in front of an American Bittern - the bittern never moved during the encounter). On my way back home I stopped at the grackle spot and saw him out in the reeds about halfway between the willows and the water - still calling away. Great-tailed Grackle at East Landfill Reservoir along road N of the culvert. It was in the willows calling quite a while before we were able to see it. Photos were taken. [mou-net] La Que Parle County - Ibis and Prairie Falcon
There were still at least 3 of the recently reported ibis at the south end of Salt Lake this afternoon. I also spotted a Prairie Falcon in flight along CR15 (due south of the east side of Salt Lake) about a mile or so north of MN68. I had stopped to check out a soaring hawk (turned out to be a Red-tailed - as usual) and spotted the falcon with black armpits flying toward me not too high above the ground. It continued flying and crossed the road just a short distance behind my vehicle. [mou-net] Murray County Red Crossbills
I found Red Crossbills at the cemetery right off of US59 just north of Slayton in Murray County. There were 2 birds calling from the tree at the south end of the cemetery. I later heard calling on the north side of the entrance road. I didn't get a recording as I was too preoccupied with getting a visual (one was a male). Also of note in Murray were two Hudsonian Godwits at the Chandler sewage ponds. It was a very distant view of them on the berm at the SE end of the lower pond. They could also be seen from the cemetery by walking west on a small path from the cemetery. [mou-net] Red Crossbill - Traverse County
I found some Red Crossbills in a new location in Traverse County today. They were at the St Anthony's cemetery just NE of Browns Valley. Take CR2 north at the eastern end of Browns Valley and go up to the top of the hill and turn right before the grain bin complex. The cemetery is a short distance from the road and overlooks the valley. There were 2 males, 2 females and at least 4 immature birds in one of the spruce trees that was about half way from where the cemetery starts to the first gate. They were silent the whole 30 minutes I watched them working on the cones about a third of the way down from the top of the tree. Re: [mou-net] Geese Near Madelia (Request for Status)
I was at the location today and there were considerable numbers of both Greater White-fronted and Snow Geese. I suspect there are also some Ross's Geese there as well (I noticed a few smaller birds but didn't have time to check the bill size/color). The location where I found the flock is along is 330th St a little over 1.5mi east of MN15/60. They are on the south side of the road and east of a hog barn right were the road makes a slight jog. Be aware that the birds are not very close to the road (I found that my scope was VERY helpful) and the viewing is through a stand of trees along the road. By the way, don't be fooled when you see the large flock of white "snow geese" decoys on the hillside about 1/2mi east of MN15/60. FYI, I was birding out west and found a very large group of snows, white-fronts, Ross's & other waterfowl just south of Appleton at the river crossing between Swift & Lac Qui Parle Counties. There is a boat landing area right near the border where you can park off of the highway. That was the only other spot I found snows during my 2 day loop that included Pope to the north and Pipestone to the south. [mou-net] Carlton County - Eared Grebe Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Moose Lake sewage ponds
I stopped at the Moose Lake sewage ponds this evening and found 30 to 40 sandpipers in the first pond (before getting to the main entrance gate). There were several species including at least one Buff-breasted Sandpiper, a couple of Semipalmated Sandpipers, several Bairds and a few Least Sandpipers. They were very active and were flying around a lot, mostly on the east shore of the first pond. A few flew over the second pond but didn't land there. When I drove further down the road to the third pond I spotted a mostly breeding plumaged Eared Grebe out in the middle by itself. The only other birds on that pond were 3 Ring-billed Gulls. [mou-net] Ross's Geese in Faribault County
I wandered around in Martin Faribault Counties this afternoon and wasn't finding much for waterfowl either in the air or on the ground. I finally got lucky around 4:30-5:00pm and spotted a large flock of Greater White-fronted Geese with some Snow Geese flying into the Walnut Lake WMA from the south. They circled and landed a mile or so from me. I was lucky again to have them close to a road for easy viewing. The large flock that I saw land was only a small portion of the birds feeding in the flooded fields. There were probably 3000 geese in the area, most of them white-fronts but there were 20 or so Snow geese and also 5 or 6 Ross's Geese. While I was there, additional flocks were coming in from the south and landing in the same area. From I90 south of Walnut Lake take MN253 south for 1.4mi and then go east on the gravel road for 2.25mi. The birds were on the south side of the road. [mou-net] Nicollet (Mute Swan) Martin (Ross's Geese)
The Mute Swan that was reported on the 18th by Brian Smith is still in the same area north of Courtland. On Wednesday it had been re-found further north than the original spot (both very small floods spots in ag fields). I spotted it today (Friday) flying over CR12/541st Ave between the two spots. It was first going west over the lake that is split by CR12. It then looped back over the road in front of me and then flew a short distance north and then dropped and disappeared out of sight on the east side of the road. It was a 4 mile route for me to get to the road a mile to the east where the bird went down (marsh with open water) and by the time I got there I was not able to re-find the bird. There are several flooded fields all around the area - especially along CR5 to the north and on over to a lake east of Hwy 111 where the bird might also hang around (a Mute Swan had been seen along Hwy 111 north of CR5 near the Sibley County line in years past). I also wandered around in Martin County this afternoon and was able to locate a mixed flock of Snow Geese and 7 or 8 Ross's Geese mixed in with some Greater White-fronted Geese west of Watkins Lake in the western part of the county. The flock was in a small flooded area along 20th Ave about a half mile north of 160th St (CR36). There were several lakes in Martin County that had opened up (with the help of strong winds this afternoon). Eagle Lake, on the north side of I90 north of Welcome at 140th Ave 150th St, was full of several species of migrating waterfowl a flock of Ring-billed Gulls. There was also a flooded field with several dabbler species located a mile north of Eagle Lake. [mou-net] Snowy Owl - Jackson County
I went out to Jackson, Watonwan and Martin counties today to look for Snowy Owls that had been reported recently. I didnt find any in Watonwan or Martin counties but I did find one in Jackson a bit further south of the locations where they had previously been reported. It was on 900th St on the north side of the road ½ mile west of 560th Avenue. When I left the Rochester area this morning the ground was all white with snow but as I got past Mankato and on into Jackson County, most all of the snow had melted and created many flooded fields (which were now all frozen since it didnt get above freezing today). The remaining snow was just in the ditches and in shelterbelts. When I saw that the snow had disappeared I was afraid that the Snowy Owls would have moved out when the warm weather moved in but, thankfully, one was still hanging around. [mou-net] Snowy Owls - Carver Meeker
I was able to relocate Snowy Owls in Carver Meeker Counties. I got to the previously documented owl spot in Carver County about 3:40pm and, as expected, it wasn't perched conveniently on the power pole as mentioned by Herb Dingmann. I pulled ahead down the hill and started scanning with binoculars on the west side of Yale Avenue (N of Hwy7). As I was scanning I suddenly spotted the owl flying in from the west. I watched it fly closer where it eventually flew behind a farmstead (with a very noticeable red barn) but didn't come out on the other side. I searched for it's perch for quite a while but was unable to relocate it. I suspect it was hanging out in or behind the woods to the west or north of the farmhouse, waiting for it to get darker before finding a higher perch to hunt from. I finally gave up trying to relocate it and moved on. I was able to (finally) locate a Snowy Owl in Meeker County in the usual place north and west of Grove City. It was on 310th St one half mile from the Kandiyohi/Meeker County border. I spotted the bird about 6pm on a power pole. [mou-net] Blue Earth Snowy Owl (still there)
Diane and I made the trip over to try and find the Snowy Owl in Blue Earth County that Chad Heins reported a few days ago southwest of St Clair. We arrived around 1:30pm and started searching the area on CR16 two miles east of MN22. We drove all around the area for quite a while but were not able to find the bird. Since the only times the bird has been reported have been around 6pm we hung around and were rewarded with a very nice view of the bird on CR175 just a few power poles north of the curve where CR16 goes south. We saw it at 5:45pm. Each time the bird has been reported it has been right at the curve where it perches on the power poles and hunts the grassy area to the southwest of the intersection. [mou-net] More on Snowy Owls in Pope, Swift, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine
Since I had previously looked for (and failed to find) Snowy Owls that Ron Erpelding had reported 3-4 weeks ago, I followed up on Herb Dingmann's recent report (see below) of finding Snowy Owls (two of which were in locations where Ron had found them). In Pope County I found an adult on the north side of 110th St 0.5mile east of CR33 (same spot where Ron and Herb reported birds). As I was leaving the area I headed south on CR33 and found a second bird (immature) on a power pole right across from a poultry farm. Seeing 2 made up for whiffing on them the last time I was in the area. In Chippewa County I was able to re-find the owl in the same place Herb had it (so far away it was barely noticeable with binoculars -great spotting Herb). I searched long and hard for the owl at the spot in Yellow Medicine where Ron and then Herb had found it. It was 6pm and getting fairly dark and I was about ready to leave the area but decided to make one more loop to the west of the original sightings. I was rewarded with a great close-up look at an adult Snowy Owl on 480th St 0.5mile south of 260th St. It was on the power poles right next to a small bridge. I was not able to re-find the owl in Swift County in spite of a long search. I plan to revisit the area again tomorrow. Thanks to Ron and Herb for great sightings and for the reports posted to MOUnet/MOUdatabase. Bob Ekblad Olmsted County in SE Minnesota http://www.Birding-Minnesota.com Subject: Snowy Owls in Pope, Swift, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine Date: Sun Feb 9 2014 20:32 pm From: herbdingmann AT charter.net To re-use a phrase I used a month or so ago, I had a fairly successful day searching for Snowy Owls today. Early this afternoon, I relocated the Snowy that Ron Erpelding had reported on February 2nd from NE Pope County. The owl was in exactly the same location as it had been when Ron found it - on 110th St. 1/2 mile east of CR33 about 50 yards off the road on the south side. Around 3:20 in the afternoon, I found a Snowy Owl in Swift County along 110th Ave SE (CR85) which is north of Murdock. It was 0.2 miles south of 30th St SE (CR16), and on the ground about 300 yards to the west. While I was writing down the location, the owl departed and I did not see in what direction it went. Shortly after 5:00, I found a Snowy Owl in western Chippewa County 0.6 miles east of CR6 along 10 St. NW. This owl was sitting alongside of a drainage ditch about 300 yards to the north side of the road. Please note that there is a 10 St. SW two miles to the south, and the street signs on both simply say 10 St., so check your maps. Finally, at 6:00 I relocated a Snowy Owl in Yellow Medicine County that Ron Erpelding had reported a month ago. This is on 260th Ave. 0.3 miles west of 500th St. The Owl was on the ground about 200 yards to the south. [mou-net] Snowy Owls in Kandiyohi Stearns Counties
I was able to re-find a Snowy Owl in Kandiyohi County late this afternoon on CR28 a mile west of CR2 (N of Atwater). It was SW of the intersection of CR28 and the road 1mi from CR2. Afterwards, I drove through the area of 130th 255th (see below) but I did not see that owl (but I didn't spend a lot of time there). I also spotted a Snowy Owl in Stearns County that I don't believe had been reported yet. It was on a power pole along US71 between Belgrade (Hwy55) and Elrosa - just north of the intersection with CR175. The bird was close to the MM152 sign where US71 bends north. [mou-net] Fillmore County Snowy Owl Search
I searched for the Snowy Owl that had been reported east of Stewartville in Fillmore County late this afternoon but was unsuccessful. Other birders were not able to find it earlier in the day as well. As a nice consolation, at dusk I spotted two Short-eared Owls in the area to the southwest of the location where the Snowy was reported. They were located flying over the more weedy fields on the west side of 121st Ave about 1/2 to 3/4 mile south of 330th St. To get to this area, go south of Hwy 30 on CR1 for 1mile and go west one mile to 121st Ave. Sent from Bob Ekblad's iPad Birding-Minnesota.com Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Another Snowy Owl in Benton + Bald Eagles galore
Diane and I spotted another Snowy Owl in Benton County at a location that I don't believe had been reported yet. This one is further east of the area where most of the birds are being reported this winter. It was a couple of power poles south of CR22 (165th St) on CR60 (75th Ave NE). This is just a mile south of the Morrison border and 4 miles east of MN25 (about 14mi east of Royalton). We also came across a convention of mature Bald Eagles along Nature Road in Morrison County along a stretch of road from 1 to 2 miles west of MN25. We counted, at a minimum, at least 100 eagles decorating most every taller tree in the area (around 3pm today). Most of the birds were in Morrison County but quite a few were a half mile further south into Benton County. We did not see any of the eagles feeding on anything while we were there. They were all just hanging out together in the trees. It was impressive to say the least. [mou-net] Freeborn County birds
I decided to check out a report of American Golden Plover at the very northeastern tip of Albert Lea Lake that Dedrick Benz reported on the database last Sunday (9/8). I was expecting them to be gone but was happy to find 50 of them on the mudflats on the south side of the road (CR46) along with several other shorebirds. CR46 is the road that goes east from the large travel center at the I35 exchange south of I90. There is a lot of traffic on CR46 so you will need to park beyond the roadside barriers and walk (carefully) back to the area along the side of the road where you can view the birds. Since this is only about 30 miles south of the spot near Rice Lake where there were hundreds of Golden Plovers present a week or so ago, I decided to see if any were still at that site on my way home. I didn't see any there at all (although I didn't use my scope for a thorough search). As a matter of fact the only bird I saw was a single Baird's Sandpiper in the ponds on the east side of the road. I also heard some Sandhill Cranes calling when I was at a small park WSW of Twin Lakes (south of Albert Lea on US69). They are only occasionally seen in the county in the fall. Trees blocked my view but they were probably on the west end of Lower Twin Lake. [mou-net] Chippewa County Birding
I was at Shakopee Lake on Tuesday the 10th around 6pm and spotted a Golden Plover on the mudflats through a gap in the trees near the shelter at the county park. There were other shorebirds present as well but mostly yellowlegs. Viewing was difficult at that time of day since the park is on the east side of the lake (viewing is west into the sun). The lake is on the northern border of Chippewa County with the park entrance about a mile from Swift County. A couple of miles south of the lake there is a wetland on the east side of Hwy 277 just south of Hwy 40 that had several shorebirds wading around in the shallow water at the back. I spotted one Red-necked Phalarope swimming around near the shorebirds. Following up on a database report by Herb Dingmann of Golden Plovers at a spot north of Rice Lake State Park I was able to find the plovers (I counted at least 400 of them!!!). I also refound some Sanderlings that Diane Anderson had found earlier today. I also found 4 Red-necked Phalaropes as well. To get to the spot go east from the park entrance and go north on CR37 for 2.6 mi and then turn right (N) on 84th Ave and go 1 mile to the two bare fields on your left. The plovers are in the fields (difficult to find if they are away from the water puddles). The phalaropes were in the ponds on the opposite side of the road and Sanderlings were on both sides. [mou-net] Morrison Grant, etc. County Birds
Diane I made a trip up to Morrison County today to look for the Buff-breasted Sandpipers that had been reported there a couple of days ago. We searched at the spot (100th St just south of CR21 - SW of Bowlus) but were not able to find them. There were quite a few Killdeer spread out all over the place and I was fortunate to also spot one Black-bellied Plover (don't think that had been reported there earlier). I also made a trip out west (Wed-Fri) that included the impoundment at the western edge of Grant County. I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of Buff-breasted Sandpipers there (SW corner), a Black-bellied Plover (on the west end of the middle road that goes by the tree) and a couple of Golden Plovers (on the northern road not too far from the NE corner of the impoundment). I believe these were last reported about Aug 8 - so they (or their friends) stayed quite a while. There were many other shorebirds there including a couple of dowitchers and lots lots of Stilt Sandpipers. Warblers were present in very small quantites. I found Canada Wilson's Warblers in 4 or 5 counties and a few other species that were just singles for the trip. I also found some late Red-necked Phalaropes in sewage ponds in Grant and also at Edgerton in Pipestone County Bob Ekblad Olmsted County in SE Minnesota http://www.Birding-Minnesota.com Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Birding in Nicollet Martin Counties
Nicollet County: Late this morning I was able to re-find the 4 Red-necked Phalaropes that Bob Williams reported at the Nicollet sewage ponds. They were in the southern pond and were the only shorebirds there (not even any Killdeer). I was also able to find the Common Gallinules on the north access to Swan Lake that had been reported about a month ago. I found one adult and two immature birds not far from shore on the southeast side of the channel. In addition I located a Black-crowned Night-Heron near the end of 438th Lane (from Hwy111 take 451st Ave east and then take the first right onto 438th) Martin County: Early afternoon I found 5 Red-necked Phalaropes at the Northrop sewage ponds east of town and east of MN15 (~4mi N of I90). These were difficult to spot. I scanned from the brush burn area with binoculars and then my scope at low power and missed them but finally spotted them at the very NE side of the first cell. The view is a bit restricted because the place I parked was fairly low relative to the berm and the water level. I ended up standing on a telephone pole laying horizontally on the ground and leaned against a wooden fencepost in order to get a view. [mou-net] Sibley County birds
I birded Sibley County this morning and was able to find the Red-headed Woodpecker pair that Doug Kieser reported at the 371st Ave and 238 St location. They were feeding young in a nest hole in the dead tree just to the east of the intersection. At the flooded field at the CR12/240th intersection (just east of the woodpecker spot) the Short-billed Dowitcher Doug reported was gone but there was a Stilt Sandpiper along with several Least Sandpipers. In the southeast corner of the county I located a pair of Sandhill Cranes (rare in the summer season) that were feeding/resting in an open field on a zig-zag road going east off of CR18. From the intersection of MN93/US169 near LeSueur go west on CR8 a short distance to CR18 and go north and take the first road to the right (east). The birds were on the second east-west stretch just after turning back east. I looked for a colt but was not able to find any (unless it was hidden by the one bird that was resting on the ground). I went by the spot a couple of hours later but was not able to relocate the cranes at that time. [mou-net] Cinnamon Teal at Silver Creek Reservoir - Olmsted County
This afternoon, Lance Vrieze located a Cinnamon Teal at the south-east corner of the Silver Creek Reservoir east of Rochester. The bird was staying closely associated with three Blue-wing Teal as they picked up and flew to several different locations on the reservoir, mostly along the southern side of the reservoir along Silver Creek Road (east of CR11). Each time birders were able to finally relocate the group of 4 only to have them pick up and move again (sometimes because of eagles overhead but most often they decided to move on their own). Diane and I were able to re-find the Cinnamon Teal the last time around 5pm in the north bay of the reservoir that is accessed via a stub road off of CR11. At that time there were additional Blue-wing Teal that had joined the group (along with several Green-wing Teal as well). This was very close to the same location where the Ruff was viewed last spring. We could see no evidence at all of any hybridization with other species. In fact, we were close enough to be able to view the red eye of the Cinnamon Teal (Blue-wing Teal have dark eyes). There was a lot of activity with birds of other species arriving and leaving the reservoir today so there is no guarantee the Cinnamon Teal will still be there in the morning, but there is at least a reasonable chance that it might be around. By the way, the reservoir is still mostly all ice covered except for open water at the in-flow locations on the north and south-east as well as around the perimeter of the reservoir. Access to the reservoir from Rochester is via CR2 and CR11 from the north or CR9 and CR11 from the south. [mou-net] Varied Thrush - Olmsted County
There is a Varied Thrush that is frequenting a feeder at 9707 35th St SW in SW Olmsted County that is a mile south of Salem Corners and then a mile west. The owner is Russell Turner. The bird is most always located behind his house in a smaller tree in the back yard or at the feeders right behind the house. It has also been spotted in the tall trees in the back yard to the north of the house. It often hangs out with the Blue Jays. Russ indicated it is OK for people to stop in and view the bird by walking to the right of the house/shed. I suggest staying to the right side of the shed and viewing from the back corner where you would be a bit further away from the tree and feeders since the bird is very easily spooked. If you would like to view the bird from inside the house (much better view - and warmer), you can call Russ ahead of time at 507-273-5055 (cell) or 507-365-8170 (home) to make arrangements. [mou-net] Pine Grosbeaks Bohemian Waxwings - Chisago to Morrison
I was searching for Pine Grosbeaks in several counties today, starting in Chisago and heading west. I found them in a couple of places in Chisago - one bird about a mile south of North Branch a block east of Forest Blvd (CR30) on 382nd St and just around the bend on Clara Ave, and a pair of birds about a mile from the Isanti border just north of MN95 (just east of Cambridge) on N Pine Lake Rd about a half mile east of Bennette Ave (north side of road). I wasn't able to find any in Isanti County until I checked out Braham where Denny Martin had reported finding them yesterday (database entry). I only found about 8 birds in the west side of town just south of the Elementary School ( HS) on Southview to 10th street. The flock was not visible until I drove into the 10th St cul-de-sac and found them in a crabapple on the north side of the loop. While I was searching for them I was up on the county line with Kanabec (Isanti CR4 - which is also Isanti 6th Street NW and also Kanabec 421st Avenue NW) and a large flock of them flew over and into Kanabec County. I followed them north on Quail Street and found them in a crabapple on the west side of the road (fire #1047). I also spotted one Pine Grosbeak in the same tree. I found about a dozen Pine Grosbeaks in Milaca in Mille Lacs County at the intersection of 6th St 2nd Ave. On the border of Mille Lacs and Benton Counties I was able to re-find a flock about a mile and a half south of MN23 that had been previously reported by Milton Blomberg. They were moving back and forth across the road. Another re-find was a small group of Pine Grosbeaks that Denny Martin reported at a farm place along Morrison CR26 just to the east of 360th Ave (~1-1/2 mile W of CR33 and a mile N of Benton County in the southeastern corner of Morrison). It was all by itself in a fairly open area. By the way, Ash Lake is now very dry and I found only a few Killdeer nothing else. There was a small strip in the NE corner with some water with grass growing in it but it was void of any birds (i.e., no American Golden-Plovers, Buff-breasted Sandpipers or Red-necked Phalaropes that had been reported a week ago). [mou-net] Swift County - Common Gallinule
I found a winter plumaged Common Gallinule and two young this afternoon at the Lubenow WPA in NW Swift County. This is the same location where the Purple Sandpiper was found last November. The adult and one of the young were hanging out near or in the reeds at the north end of the pond on the east side of the road. Also, I was able to re-find the Buff-breasted Sandpipers in both Chippewa and Swift counties that Herb Dingmann reported on Saturday at Shakopee Lake. There were also a couple of American Golden Plovers at the north end of the lake in Swift County. There were good quantities of lots of other shorebird species as well. [mou-net] Common Gallinule (Wabasha) Least Bittern (Wabasha Winona)
Diane and I followed up on Craig Mandel's report of hearing Common Gallinules in Wabasha County at the Richard Dorer Pools along Hwy 74 (2 mi SW of Hwy 61 at blue sign with 14974). We arrived about noon today (Wed) and were quickly able to spot two adults and nine little babies in the open water area on the south of the dike just a few steps along the path. They all swam from the west side across the opening to the east side. We also spotted a Least Bittern fly over the opening (past the Gallinules) and then into the reeds on the west side of the opening. It also grunted a few times from the reeds. Later we checked out Dedrick Benz's early July report of a Least Bittern along the Bartlett Lake Road on the south side of the Winona airport. We were checking the area near the culvert that is shortly after the turn toward the pier when the bittern and a Great Blue Heron flew from the water's edge (fairly close to the road) and toward the channel to the east. Chuck Krulas and I refound the bird around 11:15am today. It was hanging around the huge flock of mergansers and goldeneye much further south - south of the DNR buildings and the sportsman's club. The closest viewing was from the side of hwy 61 where it swings east and then south again. There weren't many gulls at the park at all. Re: [mou-net] Snowy Owl - Houston Co.
Chuck Krulas redound the owl about a mile west of 24 just off of 3. You need to go south on a driveway toward a large tan building next to a trailer house to view the bird - I think the house number is 5932. The bird was on the ground very close to the yard by the trailer house Sent from Bob Ekblad's iPhone 507-269-7436 Byron, MN - Olmsted County http://www.Birding-Minnesota.com On Nov 25, 2011, at 9:48 AM, Dave Bartkey greathornedd...@hotmail.com wrote: John Hockema just called and asked me to post that he and Chris Hockema just found a Snowy Owl in Houston County near the intersection of CR 3 CR 24 between Caledonia and Brownsville. [mou-net] Isanti County - Surf Scoters at South Stanwick Lake
I located three Surf Scoters at South Stanchfield Lake in Isanti County earlier today. Initially they were at the south end and viewed from the east side of the lake. They moved toward the north end of the lake and then later flew back down to the south end and started working their way back north again. Also present were 2 or 3 loons, a couple of Horned Grebes and a Red-necked Grebe as well as 3 ruddies and a single Canvasback. I did not see the Black Scoter that Herb Dingmann reported there a few days ago. A couple of blue phase Snow Geese were still present with the Canada and Cackling flock on the southwest shore (only viewable from the east side of the lake). I checked the Milaca sewage ponds in Mille Lacs County and found lots of Canada Geese but did not find either the Snow or Ross's Goose. There were several pipits in the first cell. The best assortment of ducks I found today was at the Princeton sewage ponds - in Sherburne County (in the cell right by the gate - they are working on the east cell). There were American Wigeon, Redheads, Green-wing Teal, scaup, Hooded Mergs and a very large quantity of Bufflehead. There was also a large contingent of Bonaparte's Gulls there as well. [mou-net] Alert: Juvenile Purple Sandpiper in Swift County
Denny Barb Martin called to report they found a juvenile Purple Sandpiper in Swift County - and they were watching it as we spoke on the phone (moments ago). The bird is located at the Lubenow WPA that is on 230th Ave SW 2 miles North of Hwy 12. This location is approximately 7 or so miles north of Appleton. The Purple Sandpiper and a Sanderling were hanging out together. [mou-net] Carlton County - Red-necked Phalaropes Red-headed Woodpecker
I located a pair of Red-necked Phalaropes at the Moose Lake Sewage Ponds (Carlton County) this afternoon. They were easily viewed from the gate. They were in the cell to the right side of the gate. I also spotted an immature Red-headed Woodpecker flying along the power poles next to the road just east of the small town of Automba located 2 miles from the Aitkin Cty border and 7 miles north of the Pine Cty border. Also, in Chisago County, I was able to relocate 5 American Golden-Plovers that had been previously posted on the MOU Sightings Database. They were at the 2nd sod field on west side of Keystone north of Hwy 95 (approx 4 miles east of North Branch). [mou-net] Grant Cty Ottawa impoundment - Prairie Falcon
Try again. I spotted a Prairie Falcon at the North Ottawa Impoundment in Grant Cty along the border with Traverse Cty. I was on the dead end road that enters the middle of the area from the west side. I first saw the bird flying and easily identified it as a falcon but the bird flew over by me and landed in a dead tree (only one out there). When it landed it was facing me and gave a great view of the black underwing linings. Also seen have been several imm Black-crowned Night-Herons, a couple of American Avocets, an Eared Grebe and lots of shorebirds (not the quantity or the number of species I was expecting - but fun nonetheless- mostly yellowlegs and peeps). No Snowy Egret but lots of Great Egrets. PS - I hate typing with fat fingers. [mou-net] Martin County shorebirds - including Ruddy Turnstone
North of Sherburne/I90 on Hwy 4 at CR132/32 there are hundreds of shorebirds including pecs, solitary, yellowlegs, and a few peeps - and also Franklins Ring-billed Gulls. Just west of there along 132 there is another wetland where I also found Ruddy Turnstone, Semi-palm Plover and Sanderling. Re: [mou-net] Owls
I would hope that the people observing the activities of luring owls would take photos of the activities (and license plates) and provide that information to the proper authorities (Fish Wildlife / DNR / Sherrif). The authorities can then contact the individuals to warn them about harassing the birds - or take other action as necessary. It might be helpful if someone would suggest who to contact should the need arise. I would rather see the people performing these activities be stopped rather than have people not report owls. I certainly support the suggestion presented by Paul Roisen from Iowa that birds be reported but locations provided only to people who will not interfere with the birds. If there aren't any owls reported there will be significantly less people out looking (and that will definitely reduce additional sighting reports - a downward spiral). The described lures were pieces of cloth or fur (in one case, a sock) attached to a fishing line. In each case, one of the state listservices (usually MOU-Net) was apparently monitored to initially find these owls. I find this unethical, so for now, I will no longer include any owls on the statewide RBA. Please note that I am not asking anyone to refrain from posting their own owl sightings, though I do hope all birders would at least consider it. This is not a decision I make lightly. If you disagree, I am perfectly willing to have a constructive dialog about it. [mou-net] Bohemian Waxwing in LeSueur
Today at about 2:40 pm I spotted a Bohemian Waxwing in with a flock of 30 Cedars SW of Kilkenny in LeSueur County. The flock was in a large tree next to a group of cedars on a road with a jog about a half mile east of CR7 two miles south of CR2. This is NW of Waterville. [mou-net] Red-bellied Woodpecker in Kittson County
While watching a flock of Common Redpolls in Karlstad in Kittson County in the early afternoon of Thursday the 4th I heard a Red-bellied Woodpecker call several times. I was able to track it down for a visual confirmation. It was at the intersection of Hwy11 and 1st St just west of US59. The redpolls were south and a bit west of the intersection and the woodpecker was working both south and north of Hwy11 in that area.
