[mou-net] Mower, Freeborn, Faribault, and Martin counties

2019-10-14 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
A four-day Minn Birding Weekend (MBW), October 11-12-13-14, was just
completed today after covering parts of Mower, Freeborn, Faribault, and
Martin counties along the Iowa border. To say the least, the weather on the
first 3 days was quite unpleasant with 20-30 mph winds, “high” temperatures
from the mid-30s to low 40s, and steady snow showers for most of Oct 12 in
Freeborn Co. But the group still managed to come up with a composite total
of 115 species, which included several highlights:

- 2 adult Ross’s Geese: Oct 11, Lyle sewage ponds (Martin Co); and at least
2 Cackling Geese also present

- At least 170 Greater White-fronted Geese: Oct 13, flooded area along
110th St W of Walnut Lake WMA (Faribault Co)

- 4 Sandhill Cranes: Oct 12, NE end of Geneva Lake (Freeborn Co)

- 13 American Avocets: Oct 13, E side of Minnesota Lake (Faribault Co)

- Including the avocets, there were 8 shorebird species: among these were 8
Long-billed Dowitchers, Pectoral and Least sandpipers at the Gr
White-fronted Goose location

- A count of 830 Franklin’s Gulls in one flock: Oct 12, Albert Lea Lake
(Freeborn Co)

- Red-breasted Nuthatch: Oct 14, Cedar Park in Fairmont (Martin Co)

- Total of 8 warbler species, incl Tennessee, Nashville, Magnolia,
Chestnut-sided, and Black-throated Green

[mou-net] MBW update

2018-03-03 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website was updated today, March 3,
with the current registration status of the Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends
(MBWs) of the upcoming 2018-19 season – our 33rd year. As mentioned in the
previous update, second leaders or extra MBWs have been added for each
MBWeekend to accommodate additional participants. Accordingly, most MBWeekends
which had been filled now have vacancies (only three are currently filled),
while the few that are filled have shorter waiting lists than before.

Also included on today’s update is the summary of the recently-completed South
Texas MBWeeks (http://www.mbwbirds.com/s-texas.html
), the final MBW of the 2017-18 season.
Of the seven MBWeeks on the 2018-19 schedule, six are currently filled, but
note that most of them only have short waiting lists, and it’s possible that
extra MBWeeks could be scheduled for some of these.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

[mou-net] MBW schedule update

2017-12-19 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website was updated today, December 19,
with the current registration status of the 2018-19 Minnesota Birding Weeks &
Weekends (MBWs). Most significantly, the status for all of the MBWeekends was
revised, since second leaders or extra MBWs have now been added for each MBW to
accommodate additional participants. Accordingly, note that most of the
MBWeekends which had been filled now have vacancies, while the other few have
much shorter waiting lists.

[mou-net] Carolina Wren in Duluth

2017-12-16 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Yesterday afternoon, Pat Thomas reported seeing a possible Carolina Wren in her
back yard, at 6219 E Superior St, and its ID was confirmed at 8:00 this
morning, 16 December, when five of us watched it come into one of her feeders.
Pat then told me it was OK for birders to visit, with the following conditions:

- Do not call ahead (so no need to post her phone number here).

- Walk up the driveway on the right side of her house, and watch for it at or
near her feeders, but please do not go any farther than the corner of the house
by the back door. (Pat saw it yesterday foraging on the ground next to the
garage; it first appeared this morning in the cedars behind the feeders before
landing on the left-hand feeder which appeared to be filled with peanuts.)

- Pat also asks that conversation levels be as quiet as possible, since they
have an indoors dog that is easily disturbed and barks at any sounds outside.

Thanks to Pat for her willingness to share this rarity with others, and she
thanks visitors in advance for following the few simple guidelines listed above.

Other birds seen by others on today’s Duluth CBC included a Boreal Owl along
the Lakewalk, and a N Mockingbird on the 1500 block of Jefferson St.

[mou-net] some SW Minnesota CBCs

2017-12-08 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
As Doug Johnson just posted about the Bemidji Christmas Bird Count (CBC), there
are 5 CBCs in Southwestern Minn that could also use some help. They are: Lac
Qui Parle on December 14, Cottonwood (Lyon Co) Dec 15, Lamberton Dec 16,
Marshall Dec 17, and Granite Falls Dec 18.

Note that some of these CBCs (Cottonwood and Marshall) began in the 1960s –
some 50 years ago – and have continued virtually without interruption ever
since with Paul Egeland as compiler or participant. Granite Falls is the newest
of these, starting in 2016 with Garrett Wee as compiler.

If you would like to help with any of these CBCs, contact Paul
(pmegel...@aol.com ) or Garrett
(garrett...@hotmail.com), and they can provide more information. (Weather
permitting, Bob Russell and I are tentatively planning to be on the Lac Qui
Parle and Cottonwood CBCs – and note that participation on CBCs such as these
is an ideal way for county listers to fill in the gaps on their various lists!)

[mou-net] MBWbirds.com update

2017-11-26 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website was updated yesterday, again
including descriptions of all 2018-19 Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends
(MBWs), summaries of previous MBWs, and the significantly revised registration
procedure (see http://mbwbirds.com/mbw-registration.html
).

In addition, the registration status of next season's MBWeeks was added, and
note that four of them are already filled. (Indeed, the Florida MBW became
filled at 12:02 am on November 20 – i.e., only 2 minutes after the opening of
MBWeek registrations!)

A reminder that the opening day of MBWeekends registrations will be tomorrow,
November 27, that each registration must be in a separate e-mail, but there is
no daily limit on the number of MBWeekend registrations sent. (Registrations
for MBWeeks continues as before, with that limit of one registration per day.)

[mou-net] Three-toed Woodpeckers at Stoney Point

2017-11-08 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
After several migrating American Three-toed Woodpeckers were reported by
various observers at Stoney Point and elsewhere NE of Duluth in October, two
individuals have been seen foraging in a conifer stand at Stoney Pt during the
past few days and might remain here for awhile. The site is on the E side of
Alseth Rd ~100 feet or so N of Stoney Point Dr. Cindy Edwardson and I saw a
male here late this afternoon, while others have reported two birds here
recently.

[mou-net] Sunday's N Shore sightings

2017-10-30 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
As with the North Shore summary on Saturday, this posting is because there have
been no other reports on mou-net about the highlights of this past weekend
along the N Shore of L Superior. Again, as with Saturday’s report, please note
this is a composite compilation of what a few dozen birders saw (I didn’t see
some of these), and the credit for initially finding and identifying these
birds goes to several individuals.

In addition to those birds included on Saturday’s summary (e.g., Red Phalarope
in Silver Bay, but not reported Sunday; Mountain Bluebirds in Two Harbors),
here are some of Sunday’s reports that I’m aware of...

- Late Am Golden-Plover in Grand Marais campground

- Pacific Loons: One still reported at Taconite Harbor (photos or additional
descriptions would be appreciated); another Pacific Loon at Stoney Point (plus
a Red-throated Loon reported there as well?)

- Late Warbling Vireo in Knife River: along dead-end road E of Emily’s, found
Saturday and relocated Sunday (species rare in Lake Co any time of year)

- Late Marsh Wren in Two Harbors along Harbor Walk

- Mountain Bluebirds: one of the 2 found Saturday in Two Harbors was relocated
(open area W of Castle Danger Brewery)

- At least 5 Townsend’s Solitaires (!): in Grand Marais by the Shoreline Motel,
and another at 6th Ave W & 2nd St; 1 at Good Harbor Bay W of Grand Marais; and
2 individuals in Knife River (both along dead-end road E of Emily’s, where 1
was found Saturday)

- 2 Hoary Redpolls: one in Grand Marais behind the Trading Post; another along
E end of Croftville Rd E of Grand Marais

There may be some items above that could use some correction or clarification,
plus other species that should have been included, so perhaps some of the
birders along the N Shore this weekend would be able to post these.

[mou-net] MOU awards nominations

2017-09-23 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
It's again that time of year when the MOU Awards & Recognitions Committee is
considering nominees to be recognized for their contributions to the Minnesota
Ornithologists' Union. This annual tradition of recognition takes the form of
presenting the Thomas S. Roberts, Brother Theodore Voelker, and Young Birder
awards at the MOU Papers Session on December 2, 2017.

- Since 1963, the Thomas S. Roberts Award has traditionally been our lifetime
achievement award: "For Outstanding Contributions to Minnesota Ornithology and
Birding", as stated on the plaque. Previous recipients have contributed to the
MOU in many different ways, which were sometimes not directly related to
ornithology or birding. (Also note that our unofficial policy has been that a
person would only receive the Roberts Award once, so please check the link
below to see if the person you have in mind is a previous recipient.)

- The Bro. Theodore Voelker Award is "For Special Achievement in Field
Ornithology" during this year. The original intent in 1988 was that this
recipient's achievement would be related to field ornithology in one of three
categories: significant bird sighting(s), something written (e.g., journal
article, book, or technical paper), or a field research project. In some years,
involvements in special events, conservation, mentoring, and education have
also been included in the criteria for this award, and note that a person can
receive the Voelker Award more than once.

- The Young Birder Award is for someone under 25 years old contributing to
knowledge of Minnesota birds or to the MOU; as it reads on the plaque: "For
Contributions to Birding in Minnesota". This is our newest award, presented for
the first time in 2005.

The names of all previous recipients of these awards can be found on the MOU
website: http://moumn.org/awards.html <http://moumn.org/awards.html>.
Accordingly, please contact me if you have someone in mind for any of these
awards, and include his or her qualifications and contributions which you feel
would qualify your nominee as one of our recipients. If possible, I would like
to receive all nominations no later than October 10, and the committee thanks
you in advance for your interest and input in these awards. -Kim

Re: [mou-net] Minnesota Red Crossbill Update

2017-09-05 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Adding to Bob Dunlap’s useful comments on Red Crossbill call types…

I would recommend an easy way to obtain recordings of vocalizing crossbills (or
any bird, for that matter) is to set your smartphone to camera mode, select the
video setting, try to get as close to the bird as possible, and start
recording. Then either email or text the video (which contains the sounds on
the video) to either Bob or Matt Young (m...@cornell.edu
) who can make a sonogram and identify the Type. When
I did this last Sunday, I had a response from Matt within 10 minutes!

There are also several free recording apps available which you install on your
phone, work like a tape recorder, and are easy to use. I use Voice Recorder &
Audio Editor by TapMedia Ltd, but there are others which I’m sure are just as
good or better. It makes a .wav file which I can then email or text just like a
photo or video.

You can also easily attach your Red Crossbill audio files to your eBird reports
of bird sightings. Hope this helps…

On Sep 4, 2017, at 5:21 PM, Bob Dunlap wrote:

As many birders are aware, Minnesota is experiencing a Red Crossbill
irruption. The majority of reports are coming from the western third of the
state but there are also reports from the past few weeks of birds farther
north and east.

For the past month I have been working with Matt Young of Cornell on
identifying these birds to type. As of today we have identified four types
from recordings sent to us: Types 2, 3, 4, and 5. Note that on August 13,
Justin Watts recorded the first Type 4 in Minnesota on the North Shore;
since then, many recordings from southwest Minnesota have been confirmed as
Type 4. Type 2 has also been frequently recorded in western Minnesota since
mid-August, and other reports from western Minnesota and elsewhere in the
state have been confirmed as Type 3. Yesterday, Dennis and Barbara Martin
recorded a flock of birds in Lincoln County that comprised three types,
including as many as four birds confirmed as the first Type 5 in Minnesota.
Only a handful of birds have been identified as Type 5 east of the Rockies,
and according to Matt Young the four birds recorded by the Martins also
represents the largest number of Type 5 to be found east of the Rockies.
See eBird for current and confirmed reports of the various types in
Minnesota and elsewhere.

All of the above records refer to birds originating from western North
America. The other type that has been confirmed in Minnesota, Type 10, may
be our "regular breeder" in the state and has been confirmed in
north-central Minnesota in June; elsewhere in the midwest Type 10 has also
been associated with the current irruption (and note that Types 2 and 10
occur in both western and eastern North America). Cone production is
apparently very poor in western North America this year, which is why these
birds are roaming east.

Although it is often possible to discern that more than one Red Crossbill
type is present in a flock based on differing call notes, identifying those
types without studying a recording of their calls via sonogram is extremely
difficult and I would argue cannot be done with confidence. Thankfully the
calls are quite distinctive when analyzed via sonogram...see Matt Young's
2012 article which remains an excellent source on the subject (
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/recrtype/).

I'm happy to analyze any recordings of Red Crossbill calls sent to me. If
you have such a recording and would like to learn more, please contact me
by replying to this email.

[mou-net] Stevens, Big Stone, Traverse, and Grant co's

2017-08-13 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Besides the Red Crossbills already reported on mou-net, the Minn Birding
Weekends group found a few other birds of note this weekend...

- Juvenile King Rail: Saturday evening at the N Ottawa impoundment as it twice
ran across 250th St, ~1/4 mi E of the Grant-Traverce co line; plumage blackish
overall, size noticeably larger than the Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Wilson’s
Snipe standing in the road nearby for direct size comparison (i.e., too large
to be a Virginia Rail or Sora), appeared to be about 3/4 grown. (Both adults
were seen at this spot Friday morning.)

- Common Gallinule: still present Saturday in the small marsh along the E side
of Stevens CR 9, 4.4 mi S of Hwy 28.

- 2 Plegadis ibis (probably White-faced): Saturday evening at N Ottawa
impoundment near 250th St, 1 mi E of the county line.

- Weekend total of 18 shorebird species, including Black-bellied Plover,
Sanderling, Baird’s, both dowitchers (Long-billed calling at N Ottawa near the
ibis spot), both phalaropes; besides N Ottawa, the best sites were the potholes
along and just S of Traverse CR 2, in Big Stone Co at West Toqua Lake and the
wetland at the jct of CR 25 and CR10, and the Morris sewage ponds.

- Migrant passerines: almost non-existent, with Olive-sided Flycatcher the
only early fall migrant found (3 sightings).

[mou-net] N Ottawa impoundment, Grant Co

2017-06-29 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Since there have been no updates on mou-net since last weekend on the King
Rails and other birds at North Ottawa, today's sightings there (June 29) may be
of interest:

- King Rail: one of the two birds was seen again along 250th St, ~1/4 mile E of
the Traverse Co line. Three of us saw it at 2:55pm as it appeared for a minute
or two along the S side of this flooded road. Others reportedly saw it at this
spot earlier today, including Howard Towle between 9 and 9:30 am.

- Black-necked Stilt: one of the two was present along 240th St (the S side of
the impoundment), ~`1/2 mi E of the county line.

- Cattle Egret: one along 260th St (the N side of the impoundment).

- Am Golden-Plover: in full breeding plumage, also along 260th St (total of 10
shorebird species at N Ottawa today).

[mou-net] MBWeeks & Weekends update

2017-06-25 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
There was a recent update of the MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.co
m), which includes the registration status of the
Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends (MBWs) remaining on this season’s schedule,
along with the summaries of the completed MBWs. Although all the MBWeeks are
currently filled, there are still vacancies on most of the remaining MBWeekends.

In addition, several updates have been added to the Birder’s Guide to Minnesota
section, which is now divided into four more manageable pages. Also, the
Minnesota Sewage Ponds page cites the new and very useful link on the MOU
website (http://moumn.org/avian/overlay.php
), which includes maps to all 400 sewage
ponds now listed on this page; note that the MBWbirds.com list does not include
several non-municipal ponds found in the MOU website’s compilation.

Finally, note that the “Birding by Hindsight” series of articles have been
compiled into book form, and all the author’s royalties are donated to Friends
of Sax-Zim Bog (http://saxzim.org ).

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

[mou-net] Fillmore & Houston Co's

2017-05-28 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Besides the Common Gallinule in La Crescent reported on mou-net earlier today
(from the frontage road on the E side of Hwy 61, turn E on Main St, cross the
RR tracks, stop at the corner where the road turns left, and look S into the
marsh), the Minn Birding Weekends (MBW) group found a few other birds of note
in Fillmore & Houston Co’s Friday-Sunday, May 26-27-28.

In Fillmore Co on Friday:

- late-lingering (apparently injured) Snow Goose on a farm pond SE of Spring
Valley
- Forster’s Tern at “Kapper’s” Ponds
- at least 3 late migrant Olive-sided Flycatchers and 1 Philadelphia Vireo
- 2 Acadian Flycatchers on the Sugar Camp Hollow Tr at Forestville State Park
- singing Winter Wren on the same trail
- 9 species of late spring migrant warblers, incl Mourning, N Parula, and
Blackpoll

And in Houston Co on Saturday/Sunday:

- late-lingering Am Black Duck in a flooded field next to the Root R on Hwy 26
- Peregrine Falcon at the same location
- at least 7 Acadian Flycatchers at Beaver Creek Valley State Park
- Tufted Titmouse at Beaver Creek Valley and on Hillside Dr

[mou-net] Watowan-Cottonwood-Murray counties

2017-05-14 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
In addition to the Summer Tanager at Long Lake Park in Watonwan Co, which was
reported on Friday to mou-net, the Minn Birding Weekends (MBW) group found a
few other birds of note in these three counties this weekend, May 12-13-14.

In all, we recorded 145 species, with 118 of these in Watonwan Co on May 12.
Besides the tanager, we found a nesting pair of Red-necked Grebes on Case Lake,
a cooperative and visible Least Bittern in the WMA on 360th St just W of CR 12,
17 warbler species (incl a Cape May and multiple Golden-wingeds), and Orchard
Oriole at Long Lake Co Park. Shorebirds were hard to find Watonwan Co: only 7
species were found, and the only decent spot was a flooded field at 320th St
and 830 Ave.

On May 12 we covered parts of Cottonwood and Murray counties but had few
highlights, partly due to the warm temperatures, strong winds, and very dusty
back roads. We saw fewer warblers that day (14 species), but did better with
shorebirds: 14 species, mostly in Murray Co, where there was only one
productive area, 2 mi E of Hwy 91 along the Lyon Co line (Am Golden-Plovers,
Hudsonian Godwit, Short-billed Dowitchers, Dunlins, and White-rumped
Sandpipers).

Sunday morning’s birding was less eventful, although we relocated a Henslow’s
Sparrow found by Brian Smith the day before in Brown Co at Wood Lake WMA (just
W of CR 8, 1 mi N of the Watonwan Co line).

[mou-net] listservice guidelines

2017-04-21 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Hi all -

The guidelines and procedures for MOU’s two listservices, mou-net and mou-rba,
have been rewritten this week: see http://moumn.org/listservice.html
. There are no significant differences in
the guidelines for posting messages to the listservices, but the new version
should be easier to read.

Note especially the paragraph on doing the simple courtesy of including your
first and last name with all your postings, since there have been a few recent
unsigned postings on mou-net. There are also some reminders about what is and
is not appropriate on postings. Note as well that photographs and attachments
cannot be included in your listservice messages, and a sentence about this will
be added to the guidelines.

If you have any questions or comments about mou-net or mou-rba, please contact
David Cahlander (da...@cahlander.com ), the chair
of the MOU’s Electronic Communications Committee. And thanks for your continued
interest and support of the MOU and its listservices.

[mou-net] SW Minnesota

2017-03-27 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The Minn Birding Weekends trip to Nobles and Jackson counties this past
weekend, March 25-26, encountered some difficult weather conditions and did not
turn up anything too unusual, but there were a few highlights worth noting…

- Waterfowl: Good numbers and variety of all the expected ducks, although we
curiously found no N Pintail. There were still a few lingering groups of Gr
White-fronted and Snow geese, but most notable was the flock of 55 Ross’s Geese
at the Brewster sewage ponds along with only 15 or 20 Snow Geese; I can’t
recall ever seeing such a high percentage of Ross’s (~75%) in a flock of white
geese.

- 1 Horned Grebe, 3 Herring Gulls, and 1 Common Loon on L Okabena in
Worthington.

- A few early Franklin’s Gulls at 2 locations.

- A pair of vocal and copulating E Screech-Owls in Worthington at a nest/roost
cavity. (Unfortunately, because the cavity is fairly visible, a specific
location cannot be given here to avoid the possibility of disturbance.)

- ~40 Lapland Longspurs grounded into view in a field south of Worthington.

- Sparrows were almost non-existent: 1 early Fox Sparrow, only 1 Song, and a
few Am Tree Sparrows among modest numbers of juncos.

- Blackbirds: Good numbers at several locations, including several Rusties and
just 2 Brewer’s; however, no Great-tailed Grackles or early Yellow-headeds were
found.

Finally, hardly any migrant raptors were seen because of the weather, and no
shorebirds other than Killdeer could be found on the handful of mudflats we
checked.

[mou-net] mbwbirds.com update

2017-03-01 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Earlier today, the MBWbirds.com website was updated,
which includes the registration status of the Minnesota Birding Weeks &
Weekends (MBWs) for the 2017-18 season, and this reflects all the registrations
received as of today, March 1. Note that the final MBW of the 2016-17 season
was just completed last week, and the summary of this South Texas MBWeek is now
included on today's update.

Please note as well that several corrections and additions were added to the
Birder’s Guide to Minnesota page. Although this book has been out-of-print for
a few years now, these updates will continue to be included here as needed.
Since the book was published 15 years ago, this document has become quite
lengthy, indicating that a new edition of this guide would be useful (which may
be a possibility next year).

[mou-net] St Louis & Lake Co's sightings

2017-02-03 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Other than Jim Lind’s 31 January Duluth Birding Report, there has been nothing
reported on mou-net from the Duluth-Two Harbors area since mid-January.
However, besides the birds mentioned in that report, there have been several
recent sightings by various observers which would be of interest to birders
coming here this weekend or during the upcoming birding festival:

- Two male Spruce Grouse were seen at dawn this morning on Lake CR 2 at the
traditional area N of Two Harbors, 1/4 mi N of the Sand River; we also found
Black-backed Woodpeckers at 3 sites, 1 on the Tomahawk Trail and 2 on CR 2.

- As reported by Sparky Stensaas and others at http://saxzim.org
, Sharp-tailed Grouse continue to be seen along CR 29 at
Racek Rd, 1/2 mi E and 2 mi N of Meadowlands; look for them especially around
9:00 or so at the feeders and in the field behind the house NE of the
intersection.

- The Jan 31 birding report mentioned that a good variety of gulls can be seen
at Canal Park in Duluth, but note there are some days when few if any gulls
appear: none at all were seen there yesterday in the early afternoon, and today
there were only about a dozen Herring Gulls there in the afternoon. Note that a
Long-tailed Duck (present since December) continues to be seen there among the
goldeneye flock.

- In addition to a few places in the Sax-Zim Bog, Great Gray Owls have been
seen by various observers this week along Hwy 61, especially in Lake Co: e.g.,
Jim Lind spotted 9 individuals early this evening between Castle Danger and
Split Rock Lighthouse. There are also recent indications that a few Boreal Owls
may possibly begin to appear as well along the North Shore in the coming days.
For those looking for Snowy Owls, the only consistent reports have been around
the Superior, WI municipal airport and at various sites in Aitkin Co. And there
are still no recent reports of any N Hawk Owls except in NW Minnesota.

- The previously reported Townsend’s Solitaire at 2nd Ave and 2nd St in Two
Harbors was seen again yesterday and today.

- The best place to look for Bohemian Waxwings is NE of Duluth along W Knife
River Rd, just W of Homestead Rd, where several hundred (possibly 1,000 or
more) have been seen this week, as recently as yesterday afternoon.

- The Eurasian Tree-Sparrow, which has been present in Two Harbors since
December, disappeared for a couple weeks but was seen again yesterday and
today; look for it with House Sparrows in the birdseed spread on the ground in
the alley off Waterfront St behind Do North Pizza.

- As reported on the Jan 31 birding report, the Golden-crowned Sparrow at Jeff
Newman’s feeder in Duluth was seen as recently as Jan 25, but it now appears it
may now be gone since Jeff told me today that he has not seen it since the
25th.

Hope this helps….

[mou-net] MBW update

2016-12-11 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Earlier today the registration status of all 2017-18 Minnesota Birding Weeks &
Weekends (MBWs) was posted on the MBWbirds.com website,
and this reflects all the registrations received since they were open for the
season on December 3.

There were over 300 registrations submitted in all (most of these on the first
day!), and confirmations of all these have been e-mailed to those registered.
Accordingly, please be sure to contact me if you did not receive an e-mail
regarding a MBW you registered for.

As has been the case in recent years, some of the MBWeeks filled up immediately
on the first day, as four of the six MBWeeks already have waiting lists;
however, vacancies still remain on all but three of the MBWeekends. Also note
there have been a few changes in the dates or locations for some MBWs since
they were first published in the November MOU newsletter.

Finally, some of those who search for MBWs on Google have seen a “This site may
be hacked” notice under the mbwbirds.com listing.
However, there is no such message when you go directly to the website without
Google, and the Bing and Yahoo search engines do not include it. Nothing
suspicious is visible on the website, those checking for evidence of hacking
have found nothing, and visitors to the site have not reported any
difficulties. Efforts are ongoing to get this misleading statement removed.

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Some MOU members may not be aware that the November-December issue of the MOU

announcement about it on mou-net, and here is a link to it if you haven’t seen
this issue:

http://moumn.org/newsletter/issues/2016-11.pdf

As has been the case in the past several years, the upcoming season’s schedule
of Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends (MBWs) is included in this issue. But
note that this is only the basic schedule of MBWs for the 2017-18 season (our
32nd year), and more complete information about these trips will be published
on December 1 on the MBWbirds.com website.

Also please note that no registrations can be accepted until December 3, and
any mailed-in registrations postmarked before that date will have their
confirmations delayed. (Registrations can also be given in to me in person at
the December 3 Papers Session.)

[mou-net] MBW update

2015-07-25 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website was updated today, July 25, and includes the
registration status of the remaining MBWeekends and MBWeeks of this season –
MBW's 30th year. Although all the MBWeeks are filled, four MBWeekends still
have vacancies, and there is no one on the waiting list for the other four
(i.e., just one cancellation will create a vacancy).

Some revisions for A Birder's Guide to Minnesota are also included on today's
updated website, including new corrections or additions in 16 counties. Even
though this guide is out-of-print, additional revisions will continue to be
published as needed on this website.

Finally, MBWbirds.com now includes a page with the composite list of all
species recorded during previous MBWs and the list of those seen in Minnesota
during MBWeekends. In addition on this page, to mark our 30th year, MBW
veterans might want to test their knowledge of historical trivia and some MBW
idioms.

[mou-net] MBW update

The MBWbirds.com website was updated earlier today, January 30, and includes
the current registration status of all MBWeekends and MBWeeks in the upcoming
2015-16 season. Although some MBWeekends are already filled, more than half
still have vacancies, and it is likely an extra Kidder County MBW will be added
to the schedule. Please note as well that an extra South Texas MBWeek has now
been scheduled for late December 2015, since the February 2016 MBW is filled.

Finally, a reminder that MOU membership is still expected for all MBW

[mou-net] MBW update

2014-11-16 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The planned "November 15" MBWbirds.com website was finally updated this morning
after several technical glitches (and after spending time keeping track of
those eiders), and this is a reminder that the opening day to register for any
of the MBWs of the 2015-16 season (our 30th!) will be tomorrow, November 17.

The basic MBW schedule was included with the current MOU newsletter mailing,
but the website now includes the complete descriptions of the MBWs, summaries
of previous trips, and estimated costs of the MBWeeks. Please keep in mind that
some MBWs can fill up months in advance – this is especially true of some
MBWeeks which may even be filled with tomorrow's registrations.

And note that all MBWeekend fees and MBW deposits are only $30 this season (to
mark our 30th year, of course), and a special MBW "Reunion" will be at Deep

[mou-net] MBW update

2014-07-16 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website was updated yesterday with the current registration
status of this season's remaining MBWeeks and MBWeekends, along with the
summaries of the completed MBWs. While most remaining MBWs are already filled,
there are still a few vacancies on the North Shore I and Winter Duluth I
MBWeekends. Note especially as well that several vacancies remain on next
winter's South Texas I (South Texas II is now filled), California, and Arizona
MBWeeks. And if this coming winter is anything like last winter, any of these
MBWeeks would be a welcome escape from the weather here.

Yesterday's website update also included some corrections and additions to A
Birder's Guide to Minnesota
(http://mbwbirds.com/A_Birders_Guide_to_Minnesota.html). Although this guide
has been out-of-print for several months, occasional updates such as this will
continue to appear as needed.

As always, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

[mou-net] MBW update

2014-03-11 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
With the two recent MBWeeks in South Texas having taken place (see
http://mbwbirds.com/S_Texas.html), the 2013-14 season of Minnesota Birding
Weeks & Weekends has now been completed, and our 29th season begins later this
month. The registration status of these 2014-15 MBWs was updated earlier today
on the MBWbirds.com website, and, while some MBWs are already filled, vacancies
still remain on others (including the High Island-Texas Hill Country MBWeek in
April).

Also note there have been revisions in the MBW schedule since it initially
appeared in the November 2013 MOU newsletter, with some revised dates and a few
additional MBWs included on the schedule – see the website for details. And, as
always, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

[mou-net] 2014-15 MBW update

2013-11-24 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
All the registrations received so far for the 2014-15 MBWeeks and MBWeekends
season have now been processed, and the status of each MBW can be found on the
MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.com).

Even though the opening of registrations was only a few days ago, some MBWs are
already filled with waiting lists: Minnesota River, Cook Co, and Aitkin Co
MBWeekends; Newfoundland and Washington MBWeeks. Also note that others only
have one or two vacancies remaining: Lac Qui Parle, Fall Duluth II, and
Rock-Pipestone MBWeekends; High Island and Central California MBWeeks.

In addition, the MBWbirds.com website includes information on some revisions
involving a few MBWs, with other schedule adjustments possible.

Finally, note there are still a few MBWs with vacancies remaining on the
2013-14 schedule (Duluth III, Southern California, and South Texas I). And, as
always, please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

[mou-net] 2014-15 MBW schedule

2013-11-17 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.com) was updated last night, November 16,
with the new 2014-15 Minnesota Birding Weekends & Weeks (MBW) schedule, which
includes the descriptions and past summaries of all MBWs along with MBWeek cost
estimates. A reminder that the opening day of registrations is tomorrow,
November 18 (i.e., the first day that registrations for the 2014-15 MBW season
can be postmarked).

Also please note:

- Some MBWs can become filled months in advance; this is especially true of
some MBWeeks which could even be filled with waiting lists after the first day.

- A day was added to the Central California MBWeek (now August 9-18, 2014 to
accommodate the Shearwater Journeys pelagic schedule); similarly, it is
possible that the dates may have to be adjusted on the Newfoundland and
Washington MBWeeks.

- Another pre-MBW option was added to the schedule (October 29 / Duluth); it is
also possible that a pre-Washington MBWeek option will be scheduled (September
11-12 / Mt. Ranier).

- Finally, there are still vacancies on 3 of the remaining MBWs in the 2013-14
schedule: the Southern California and South Texas I MBWeeks, and the Duluth III
MBWeekend.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Just a brief posting here to mention that the MBWbirds website

the Minnesota Birding Weekends and Weeks, along with the summaries of the

Note that an additional South Texas MBWeek is still scheduled if there enough
registrations: on either Dec 26, 2013 - Jan 1, 2014 or Feb 24 - Mar 2, 2014,
whichever dates can accommodate the most participants.

Included on the website as well are some additional revisions to A Birder's
Guide to Minnesota. Although the book became out-of-print in 2012, updated
bird-finding information will continue to be included here periodically. (Also
discontinued in 2012 was the "Birding by Hindsight" series of bird ID articles
in The Loon, but these will continue to be archived on the website.)

Although some MBWs are already filled (or nearly so), note that there is no

other MBWs still have vacancies. Additional MBWeekends have also been scheduled
to accommodate extra participants (e.g., for the Koochiching County and North

[mou-net] MBW schedule update

2013-03-02 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Just a brief posting here to mention that the MBWbirds website
(http://mbwbirds.com) was updated today, that the 2012-13 MBW season has now
been completed, and the registration status for all the Minnesota Birding
Weekends and Weeks of the March 2013 - February 2014 season continues to be
updated.

Since several MBWs were already filled (or nearly filled) so early, note that
some additional MBWs or second leaders have been scheduled to accommodate extra
participants:

- Additional Washington-Br. Columbia MBWeek on Sept. 5-13, 2013 (although both
MBWs are filled with long waiting lists).

- Additional South Texas MBWeek on Dec. 26, 2013 - Jan. 1, 2014.

- Additional Koochiching Co. MBWeekend on June 15-16-17 (although both MBWs are
filled).

- Additional North Shore of Lake Superior MBWeekend on Oct. 31 - Nov. 1.

- Second leaders added to the Oct. 4 North Shore and Jan. 4-5, 2014 Duluth
MBWeekends.

It is also possible that extra leaders or MBWeekends will be scheduled to

Just a brief e-mail to note that the MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.com) was

Minnesota Birding Weekends and Weeks of the new 2013-14 season. This includes
all those registrations received through Nov 24, with almost all of these
postmarked on Nov 19.

Even though the registration period just opened on the 19th, some MBWs are

filled. Because of two long waiting lists, note that an additional Koochiching

[mou-net] Minn Birding Weeks/Weekends update

2011-03-06 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Now that the 25th season of MBWs (Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends)
has recently been completed, our 26th season will be underway next
month. Accordingly, the MBWbirds.com website (http://www.mbwbirds.com)

2011-12 MBW season as of March 5. Although some MBWs are already
filled, most of their waiting lists are short, and there are still
vacancies on several other MBWs.

Note that an additional Aitkin County MBW has been added (with the
date of the pre-MBW changed) to accommodate most of those on the
waiting list, and the dates for the Duluth I & II MBWeekend and pre-
MBW option have been changed to September 30-October 1-October 2. Also
at MBWbirds.com, you'll find the summaries of the recent California,
Arizona, and Texas MBWeeks (although apparently the Firefox browser is
not reading the CA-AZ summary), and there is the latest February 2011
update to A Birder's Guide to Minnesota.

2010-12-01 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The MBWbirds.com website (http://www.mbwbirds.com) has now been
updated to include the status of registrations for all Minnesota
Birding Weeks & Weekends as of November 30. Note that 3 MBWeekends are
already filled with waiting lists (but additional participants can be
confirmed if a second leader can be found), and 4 other MBWeekends are
close to being filled. Four MBWeeks are filled as well, with long
waiting lists for Newfoundland and Washington so that no additional
registrations are being taken for these MBWs.

Please note as well there are 2 changes in the original schedule. The
Washington-British Colombia MBWeek is now September 17-25, 2011, and
the September MBWeekend based in Duluth will be rescheduled for either
September 9-10-11 or September 30-October 1-2, 2011.

All registrations for the 2011-2012 MBWs were acknowledged by e-mail
yesterday, indicating if the person is confirmed or on a waiting list.
Please be sure to contact me if you did not receive an acknowledgement
for a MBW for which you had registered.

[mou-net] Minn Birding Weekends update

2010-11-21 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The Minnesota Birding Weeks & Weekends (MBW) schedule for the 2011-12
season has been posted on the MBWbirds.com website as of this morning,
Nov 21, with the opening of registrations tomorrow, Nov 22. (Some
registrations have already been received since Nov 15, the previously
announced date in the MOU newsletter; these will be considered as Nov
22 registrations.) This is MBW's 26th season in association with the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union: we started back in 1986 under the
name of MOU Birding Weekends.

Please note there are 2 changes in the original schedule. The
Washington-British Colombia MBWeek is now September 17-25, 2011, to
match up with the recently posted Westport Seabirds pelagic trip
schedule. And, since these dates now conflict with the September
23-24-25 MBWeekend based in Duluth, that MBW has been canceled.

Also note there are still vacancies on 2 MBWs which are part of the
2010-11 schedule: the Jan 8-9, 2011 MBWeekend in Duluth, and the Feb
19-27, 2011 MBWeek in South Texas.

Complete descriptions, previous summaries, and registration
information for all MBWs can be found at http://mbwbirds.com.

[mou-net] Minn Birding Weekends/Weeks (MBW) update

2010-02-23 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Following is an update to the status of the MBWeekends and MBWeeks in
the 2010-11 MBW season. Note that this is our 25th season in
association with the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union: we started back
in 1986 under the name MOU Birding Weekends. To celebrate this
milestone, a special Memorial Day MBW based at Deep Portage
Conservation Reserve in Cass Co. has been scheduled, and there is
still room for additional registrations.

The status of each MBW as of February 20 is listed below, and note
that some are already filled. However, it still may be worth
registering for a filled MBW since there could be cancellations, or an
additional leader or extra tour can sometimes be arranged to
accommodate those on waiting lists. For example, an extra Rock-
Pipestone MBWeekend has been scheduled, and the Churchill,
Newfoundland, and California MBWeeks will again be scheduled in
2011-12, with those on current waiting lists confirmed for next year.
(Of course, the MBW fees/deposits of those who remain on waiting lists
will be refunded.)

Besides the additional Rock-Pipestone MBW, note that a second leader
has been found for 3 formerly filled MBWeekends to accommodate extra
participants (Northwestern Minn, Lyon-Lincoln, and North Shore). Also
note the 2010 Platte River MBW has been canceled, and that the
December-January Texas MBW might be rescheduled for February 2011.

For more complete information on all this, be sure to visit the
MBWbirds website, http://mbwbirds.com, which has recently been
updated. New MBW summaries have been included, along with several
photos to supplement some summaries. (Elsewhere on MBWbirds.com,
you'll find a new update to A Birder's Guide to Minnesota, and in the
near future an ID References page, a photo gallery section, and
additional "Birding by Hindsight" articles will be added.)

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Earlier today, the MBWbirds website (http://mbwbirds.com) finally
became a reality. Thanks to some help from Tony Hertzel, one final
technical problem was solved, and the site looks like it is working as
it should. Here, of course, you will find information on Minnesota
Birding Weeks & Weekends (MBWs), including some past trip reports and
registration forms. In addition, there are updates to A Birder's Guide
to Minnesota, the "Birding by Hindsight" series of articles from The
Loon, and even a checklist of Minnesota sewage ponds, with more
features to be added in the coming weeks,

Also today, I e-mailed out confirmations to those registered for the
2010-11 MBWs: please let me know if you registered for any MBW by Nov
28 or earlier and did not receive a confirmation e-mail. Note the

[mou-net] 2010-2011 MBW schedule

2009-11-22 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
As announced in the November-December 2009 MOU newsletter, the
2010-2011 schedule of Minnesota Birding Weekends & Weeks (MBW) is now
available. MBWs have been offered since 1986 in association with the
MOU (our original name was MOU Birding Weekends), and this will be our
25th season.

The dates and destinations of these MBWs is listed below, and note
they include a special Memorial Day MBWeekend (lodging and meals
included) at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve in Cass County,
featuring evening programs along with three days of field trips. Also
note the expanded schedule of relatively inexpensive out-of-state
MBWeeks, mostly to destinations which I formerly led for Victor
Emanual Nature Tours.

Note that the new MBWbirds.com website mentioned in the newsletter is
not yet on-line, but it will appear before the end of November, and it
will include more complete descriptions of all the MBWs plus
registration information. In the meantime, besides the November issue
of the MOU newsletter, you will find MBW information already in place
on Bob Ekblad's website (http://www.birding-minnesota.com/MN-MBW.htm),
and later today or tomorrow it should appear on the Birding in
Minnesota link on MOU's website (http://moumn.org).

Monday, November 23, is the first date that MBW registrations can be
submitted by US mail, and they are accepted on a first-come-first-
served basis (according to US mail postmarks). At this time, no
registrations are currently taken or places held by e-mail; however,
all registrations must include an e-mail address, and all are
confirmed by e-mail as they are received.

Also please note that some MBWs will probably fill up almost
immediately, especially some of the new MBWeeks. However, if several
persons don't register in time and a long waiting list develops, a
MBWeek could probably be repeated in 2011 to accommodate them. For
MBWeekends with long waiting lists, an extra weekend or leader can
sometimes be arranged to accommodate extra participants.

Finally, before considering the 2010-2011 schedule, be aware there are
still 3 MBWs remaining in the 2009-10 season, two of which still have
vacancies:

- The January 9-10, 2010 MBWeekend in Duluth is filled, but an extra
January 2-3, 2010 MBW has been scheduled and still has vacancies.

- The January 16 - 24, 2010 California & Arizona MBWeek is filled with
a waiting list, and no additional registrations are being taken;
however, see the listings below for the MBWeeks in California January
22 - 29, 2011 and in Arizona January 30 - February 6, 2011.

- The February 6-14, 2010 South Texas MBWeek still has 2 vacancies
(see http://moumn.org/mbw.html for more information); also see the
December 27, 2010 - January 2, 2011 South Texas MBWeek listing.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions, and I look
forward to a deluge of mail later this week!

[mou-net] Minnesota Birding Weekends update

2009-05-31 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Following is an update of the 2009-10 Minnesota Birding Weekends (MBW)
schedule as of today, May 31.

Please note that the dates for the Lake County MBW with a one-day
option to Sax-Zim Bog have been changed: the Sax-Zim option is now
scheduled for July 3 (formerly July 6), and the Lake Co MBW will be
only on July 4-5 (formerly July 3-4-5), with the fee now $50 (formerly
$75). Be sure to note as well that the NW Minnesota MBW over Labor Day
Weekend still has plenty of vacancies, and it will include Roseau
County, Lake of the Woods, and Beltrami Island State Forest (all
places not covered on the Memorial Day MBW), as well as Agassiz NWR.

It is still worth registering for MBWs which are already filled, since
it may be possible to find a second leader and take extra participants
(this will be likely on the Nov 7-8 North Shore MBW). Or, in some
cases, an extra MBW on another weekend might be possible to
accommodate extra persons. Remember, if places never open up for those
on a waiting list, they will receive a full refund of their MBW fees.
(And a reminder that you may register separately for any of the
optional one-day MBWs without participating in the corresponding
Saturday-Sunday MBW.)

Please keep in mind that MBW registrations are only accepted by U S
mail, that all registrations must now include an e-mail address, but
that no registrations are taken or places held by e-mail. All
registrations are confirmed by e-mail as they are received: please let
me know if you did not receive confirmation for any MBW you registered
for or if you have any questions.

Additional MBW descriptions and registration information are included
on the MOU website (http://moumn.org/mbw.html), on Bob Ekblad's
website (http://www.birding-minnesota.com/MN-MBW.htm), and in the
January 2009 issue of the MOU newsletter.

Accordingly, here is the status of each MBW:

- June 20-21 / Clay County / $50

[July 26 - August 1 / Big Bend National Park: this Birding Week is
already filled with 13 on the waiting list; sorry, no additional
registrations are being taken at this time.]

[mou-net] Minnesota Birding Weekends update

2009-02-03 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Several of this season's Minnesota Birding Weekends (MBWs) were either
already filled, or close to it, before MOU members received the
January-February newsletter with the 2009-10 MBW schedule. Because of
this, I have decided to return to the maximum of 19 participants on
most MBWs, which had previously been our limit for several years. I
had planned to change the limit on most MBWs to 15 participants, but
that would have resulted in more persons on waiting lists.

Note that 15 participants is still the maximum on the Lake Co/Sax-Zim
MBW, 30 participants remains the limit on the 2-leader MBWs on
Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and the maximum on the Big Bend,
Arizona, and South Texas trips is still 13. Also note that it may be
possible on some MBWs to find a second leader and take extra
participants, especially those in Duluth and the North Shore, and in
some cases an extra MBW on another weekend might be possible to
accommodate extra persons.

So, it is still worth registering for MBWs which are already filled
with waiting lists. (Remember, if places never open up for those on a
waiting list, they will receive a 100% refund of their MBW fees.)

Accordingly, as of today, February 3, here is the status of each MBW:

- April 11-12 / Rothsay Wildlife Management Area / $45
- pre-MBW option / April 10 / Grant Co. / $30
  Status: 1 vacancy / limit 19 participants

- May 2-3 / Cottonwood & Murray Counties / $45
- pre-MBW option / May 1 / Watonwan Co. / $30
Status: FILLED with 1 on waiting list / limit 19 participants

- May 23-24-25 / Northwestern Minnesota I / $75
- pre-MBW option / May 22 / Kittson Co. / $30
Status: FILLED with 7 on waiting list / limit 30 participants

- June 20-21 / Clay County / $50
- pre-MBW option / June 19 / Norman Co. / $30
  Status: 5 vacancies / limit 19 participants

- July 3-4-5 / Lake County / $75 (Leader Craig Mandel)
- post-MBW option / July 6 / Sax-Zim Bog / $20
  Status: 6 vacancies / limit 15 participants

[July 26 - August 1 / Big Bend National Park: this Birding Week is
already filled with 13 on the waiting list; sorry, no additional
registrations are being taken at this time.]

- AUGUST 1 - 9 / SOUTHEAST ARIZONA / $100 deposit
Status: FILLED with 0 on waiting list / limit 13 participants

- August 22-23 / Stevens-Traverse-Big Stone Counties / $45
- pre-MBW option / Aug. 21 / Swift Co. / $30
  Status: 2 vacancies / limit 19 participants

- September 5-6-7 / Northwestern Minnesota II / $70
- pre-MBW option / Sept. 4 / Clearwater Co. / $30
  Status: 22 vacancies / limit 30 participants

- September 26 / Duluth I / $20
  Status: 2 vacancies / limit 19 participants

- September 27 / Duluth II / $20
  Status: 4 vacancies / limit 19 participants

- October 17-18 / Marsh Lake-Lac Qui Parle-Big Stone NWR / $40
- pre-MBW option / Oct. 16 / Yellow Medicine Co. / $25
Status: FILLED with 0 on waiting list / limit 19 participants

- November 7-8 / North Shore of Lake Superior / $40
Status: FILLED with 8 on waiting list / limit 19 participants

- January 9-10, 2010 / Duluth III / $35
  Status: 11 vacancies / limit 19 participants

[January 16-24, 2010 / California & Arizona (Co-Leader Craig Mandel):
this Birding Week is already filled with 9 on the waiting list; sorry,
no additional registrations are being taken at this time.]

- FEBRUARY 6 - 14, 2010 / SOUTH TEXAS / $100 deposit
  Status: 8 vacancies / limit 13 participants

Please keep in mind that MBW registrations are only accepted by U S
mail on a first-come-first-served basis (i.e., based on postmark
dates); no registrations are taken by e-mail. All registrations
received as of today have been confirmed by e-mail: please let me know
if you did not receive confirmation for a MBW you registered for.

The complete 2009-10 MBW schedule and registration information is
included on the MOU website (http://moumn.org/mbw.html), on Bob

[mou-net] Minnesota Birding Weekends

2008-12-30 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
The 2009-10 Minnesota Birding Weekends (MBW) schedule is now included
on the MOU website (http://moumn.org/mbw.html) and on Bob Ekblad's
website (http://www.birding-minnesota.com/MN-MBW.htm). It also appears
as an insert in the January 2009 issue of the MOU newsletter
(Minnesota Birding), which is probably being mailed to members this
week.

Accordingly, I am now accepting registrations for this coming season's
MBWs, and please keep in mind that some trips become filled with
waiting lists very quickly, so don't delay if there's a MBW you're
especially interested in. Following is the list of the April 2009 -
February 2010 MBWs, and you'll find additional information about them,
including the registration procedure and a form, on the two websites
above and in Minnesota Birding:

- April 11-12 / Rothsay Wildlife Management Area / $45
- pre-MBW option / April 10 / Grant Co. / $30

- May 2-3 / Cottonwood and Murray Counties / $45
- pre-MBW option / May 1 / Watonwan Co. / $30

- May 23-24-25 / Northwestern Minnesota I / $75
- pre-MBW option / May 22 / Kittson Co. / $30

- June 20-21 / Clay County / $50
- pre-MBW option / June 19 / Norman Co. / $30

- July 3-4-5 / Lake County / $75 (Leader Craig Mandel)
- post-MBW option / July 6 / Sax-Zim Bog / $20

- JULY 26 - AUGUST 1 / BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK / $100 deposit

- AUGUST 1 - 9 / SOUTHEAST ARIZONA / $100 deposit

- August 22-23 / Stevens - Traverse - Big Stone Counties / $45
- pre-MBW option / Aug. 21 / Swift Co. / $30

- September 5-6-7 / Northwestern Minnesota II / $70
- pre-MBW option / Sept. 4 / Clearwater Co. / $30

- September 26 / Duluth I / $20

- September 27 / Duluth II / $20

- October 17-18 / Marsh Lake - Lac Qui Parle - Big Stone N.W.R. / $40
- pre-MBW option / Oct. 16 / Yellow Medicine Co. / $25

- November 7-8 / North Shore of Lake Superior / $40

- January 9-10, 2010 / Duluth III / $35

[January 16 - 24, 2010 / California & Arizona (Co-Leader Craig
Mandel): this Birding Week is already filled with 9 on the waiting
list; sorry, no additional registrations are being taken at this time.]

- FEBRUARY 6 - 14, 2010 / SOUTH TEXAS / $100 deposit

*  *  *

Veterans of past MBW seasons will notice several changes in the
registration procedure and in some of our policies. Unfortunately, a
printing error made these somewhat difficult to read on the first page
of the Minnesota Birding insert, and following are the most important
changes:

- All registrations must now include an e-mail address; this is
because the information about each MBW will now only be sent by e-
mail, no longer by U S mail.

- Most MBWs will now be limited to 15 participants with 4 vehicles in
the birding car caravans; formerly the limit was 19 persons in 5
vehicles.

- Those whose registrations are confirmed for a MBW will receive a
refund of 80% of the registration fee if they cancel at least one week
before the MBW; formerly this refund was 100%. (Those on a MBW's
waiting list will still receive a 100% refund if a place for them
never opens up.)

- The registration form has changed, resulting in less paperwork: MBW
veterans will no longer need to include a home address and telephone
number if these have not changed, and you can now include more than
one MBW registration on a single form and on a single check.

Finally, a reminder that MBWs are part of the MOU field trips
schedule, and the MOU has other field trips coordinated by Field Trips
Chairman Bob Williams (bxwilli...@cbburnet.com).

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions, and note that
MBW's telephone number has changed. See you in 2009.

[mou] Minnesota Birding Weekends

2007-04-09 Thread Kim Richard Eckert
Last month, the MOU Board of Directors approved the proposal to
consider Minnesota Birding Weekends (MBW) as part of the MOU's program
of field trips. This arrangement, by the way, was actually in effect
during the first few years after the MBW program started back in 1986
and was called MOU Birding Weekends. Aside from a minor financial
adjustment involving the MOU, MBW participants will not see any
changes in how we operate, and the MOU will continue to offer other
non-MBW field trips under the direction of Bob Williams, the MOU Field
Trips Chairperson.

MBW information (including the schedule, trip descriptions and fees,
the registration procedure, etc.) will continue to appear on the MOU's
website (http://moumn.org/trips.html), on Bob Ekblad's website
(http://www.birding-minnesota.com/MN-MBW.htm), and it will continue as
an annual insert in the January-February issue of the MOU's
newsletter. One change is there will be occasional announcements here
on mou-net with schedule updates, trip summaries, etc., now that MBW
is a part of the MOU and thus an appropriate topic for this listserve.

The first MBW of the 2007-08 season will take place later this month,
and, like several others, it is already filled with a waiting list. If
you are considering registering for a MBW, please check its status
below first, and note you can request by e-mail to be added to a
filled MBW's waiting list without sending a fee. Note as well that the
Friday-only options listed below can be taken separately without
registering for the corresponding Saturday-Sunday MBW. Also, you'll
find the addition of two new MBWs (June 9-10 / Cook County and
November 5-6 / North Shore) which are being offered to accommodate
extra participants.
