[mou-net] Location of Grass Lake/ Richfield Lake
Grass Lake is a remnant of Richfield Lake that was "cut-off" when Lyndale Ave. was extended several decades ago. Grass Lake is tucked between Hwy 62 on the south, 58th St. on the north; Lyndale cutoff of the east and about Logan on the west. Probably the best way to get there is off Lyndale Ave; go west on 58th St.; south on Dupont and keep moving south. Alternatively, you can go east off Penn at 60th. Go straight when 60th curves to the north. You'll find the lake at the bottom of the hill. Richfield Lake is across 66th St. from Wood Lake NC, just north of 65th. You can take 65th west from Lyndale or go south of 66th at the Super America station. There is on street parking and construction east of the Post Office / SA station. [mou-net] Screech owl pellets
I had a screech owl here for over a month and the wood duck box it was staying in is littered with pellets. Most of them look like mouse fur, but there are some feathers in the box too. Is there anybody interested in collecting these? I haven't seen the owl since I returned from vacation on Wednesday, but it returned just before I left and may still come back. Re: [mou-net] Eastern Screech Owl Wright Co.
The screech owl is no longer here. I didn't see it yesterday so I wanted to make sure it was here for the people that were planning on coming to see it. I took a picture inside the box and it's gone. Re: [mou-net] Eastern Screech Owl Wright Co.
I have received a couple requests to come see the screech owl, I don't mind if you do but it is very shy and I can only see it when I'm in my house. It also isn't very predictable for when it perches in the hole, although most evenings it is there, and half of the time at mid-afternoon. My address is: 14399 89th St NE Otsego, MN 55330 763-441-7493 I should be around during the afternoons this weekend. [mou-net] Long -Tailed Duck Still On Lake Calhoun
As of 3:00 p.m. on 11/22 the long-tailed duck was still on the SW quadrant of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. It is moving north and south out from the west shore staying close to the buffleheads. There is also a common loon near them that while I was there flushed them. There was also a bald eagle in the vicinity. Thanks to Chet Meyer for the heads-up. [mou-net] Tracking Minnesota Loons
I would guess that many saw the article in today's Strib, "True North", by Josephine Marcotty regarding tracking of Loons by radar. It's probably a good use of Minnesota Lottery earnings. [mou-net] Nights Hawks
Yesterday, 8/29, in SE Saint Louis Park I observed 4 - 6 common nighthawks foraging and kettling, possibly in migration, from my back deck. They finally disappeared into the cirrus clouds. Chimney swifts were also foraging at what appeared to be a fairly high altitude. I have also observe a olive-sided flycatcher foraging from atop a dying spruce tree. [mou-net] Roberts Bird Sanctuary
As many of you know, the Mpls. Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is looking for a location for an off-leash dog park in south or southwest Minneapolis. Two of three locations are adjacent or very near the east entrance to Roberts Bird Sanctuary. Below is are excerpts from an update regarding this issue, which is being monitored by Aud. Chap. of Mpls. I think that little is known about the effects of dog parks on bird sanctuaries. If anyone has access to research or other information, you can contact Kit at the following: >Kit Healy >Chair, Conservation Committee >Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis >heal0...@umn.edu Here's an update for people on what's happening regarding possibly locating an off-leash dog park next to Roberts Bird Sanctuary. The issue has not been added to the MPRB agenda and no citizen input meetings have been scheduled. You can mail a letter, send an email, or make a phone call, or do all three! The Commissioners need to hear from us. If you are not opposed to dog parks in general, please let the Commissioners know this as well. (When my dogs were alive, I often took them to off-leash parks.) Also, please forward this email to others who want to preserve and protect the Sanctuary. [mou-net] Jackson and Cottonwood Ctys
I visited Jackson and Cottonwood Counties over the weekend. There were a few flooded fields. One just SE of Mt. Lake and another SE of Heron Lake. There were several species of shorebirds in each. More on Friday, fewer on Sunday, after the storm on Saturday night. Among other species were Franklin and ringbill gulls Lesser yellow-legs Solitary sp many peeps Visited the Wolf Lake Nature Center east of Windom. Many bobolinks and the resident trumpeter swans, as well as a GB Heron standing on the higher cross beam on a high- voltage power tower. On JC Hwy 17 just north of the Kilen Hills turnoff there was a osprey standing on a hay bale in the ditch. Haying was in full swing throughout the counties. Had a vide report of a pair of red necked grebes on Rat Lake near Delft. There were a few ducks on the lake including ruddy. There are wind turbines going up all over eastern Jackson and Cottonwood ctys. Mostly in crop land, not WMA or WPA. The crews are working out of Jackson and Worthington.
