[Mpls] Article: One Nation News: 8th Ward Race is civilized...
Koran Addo and the One Nation News really do their readers a disservice with this article. Although very complimentary to the two candidates profiled, it fails to mention that there are 10 candidates on the ballot for the 8th Ward city council race, and if the intent was to profile African American candidates Addo neglected Don Bellfield, Zach Metoyer, and Darrell Robinson. And in the interest of equal time here, I should mention that Elizabeth Glidden, Marie Hauser, Dennis Tifft and Doug Mann also wish to represent the 8th Ward. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield REMINDERS: 1. re: [Mpls] NOW endorses Hauser in 8th Ward
Congratulations to Marie Hauser for her MN NOW PAC endorsement. They also endorsed one of her opponents, Elizabeth Glidden, in early March. I'm sure they recognized Elizabeth for her longstanding record of fighting employment and housing discrimination as a civil rights attorney. For more info about this endorsement and those by Progressive Minnesota, the Minnesota Women's Political Caucus, the Somali American Democratic Association and others, see www.elizabethglidden.com. Re: [Mpls] Reminder: 8th Ward candidate forum is Thursday
Having sat through the 8th Ward forum at Sabathani last month, where 10 candidates were on stage together, I have to say that David and Ed have gotten it right. Limiting the participants to just the 5 seeking DFL endorsement will permit them to spend more time on the questions. Sixty second answers just doesn't do anyone justice, candidate or audience member. Thank you Southside Pride and Southwest Journal. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield (Ward 11) REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! [Mpls] re:Tax payer funded campaign material
Mr. Hodges wrote: "I would like it if other people could say if their city council member, park board member, state rep, or other elected officials consistently send out news letters." I receive a newsletter from CM Scott Benson on at least an annual basis (although technically I'm not one of his constituents until after this year's election) and I believe at least some other CMs (such as Lisa Goodman) do the same. Senators Dayton and Coleman have started doing e-newsletters (to those who have contacted them via email in the past, I suppose). In Senate District 60, Frank Hornstein, Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Scott Dibble put out a joint e-newsletter a few times a year. In a non-election year I think it's easy to attribute these communications to constituent contact and service. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield and the new 11-1 REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! [Mpls] bar time rush
I also find the cops' policy of forcing drivers onto the freeway at 1 a.m. to be annoying. For one thing, many of the clubs downtown are still open, such as First Avenue. It's not fair to them to have their customers herded out of the neighborhood. Also, I've been forced onto 94 heading north, with no option to go another direction. I couldn't get off to turn around until Dowling Avenue. How would you like to live near Dowling and I-94 and have tons of people driving past your house at that hour, just trying to get going in the right direction? Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
[Mpls] Fireside Chat at Hennepin History Museum: Layman's Cemetery
On Saturday, March 15 at 5:00pm the Hennepin History Museum is hosting its on-going Fireside Chat series. The program is free and open to the public. Susan Hunter Weir will offer a presentation on the history of Layman's Cemetery, Hennepin County's first cemetery. Opened in 1858, the cemetery was the result of pioneer Martin Layman setting aside 26 acres of his farmland located today on Lake Street in South Minneapolis. In 1928 the city took possession of the site and renamed it Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery. The cemetery remains the final resting place for thousands of Minneapolis and Hennepin County pioneers from some of its most prominent citizens to some of its most notorious to the everyday citizens who built and lived in the community. Most of us have passed by the old Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery on Cedar Avenue and Lake Street. How much do you know about the past of this historic ground and its eternal guests? The Hennepin History Museum is located in the historic Washburn Fair Oaks neighborhood just south of downtown Minneapolis at 2303 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55404. For additional information about the museum and its programs please visit the museum's Web site at http://www.hhmuseum.org/ or call (612) 870-1329. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] Corruption at Hennepin History Museum
This Saturday, January 11 at 5 p.m., Iric Nathanson will give a Fireside Chat about "The Shame of Minneapolis," the mayoral and police corruption scandal of 1902 surrounding Mayor "Doc" Ames. The scandal was given widespread coverage when the article "The Shame of Minneapolis" was published in McClure's Magazine 100 years ago this month. It was one of the earliest examples of muckraking journalism. Iric has written an article about this scandal in the current issue of Hennepin History magazine. The Fireside Chat is free and open to the public. The Hennepin History Museum is located at 2303 3rd Avenue South, in the historic Christian Mansion. Parking is available in the museum's lot on the south side of the building, on 3rd Avenue, or in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts parking lot (former Fair Oaks motel). Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
[Mpls] MCDA small business loans
Thank goodness for the MCDA small business loan program! A few years ago the Hennepin History Museum needed to replace an 80+ year old boiler. With the help of the MCDA we were able to deal with this emergency by taking a loan of $30,000 to pay for the boiler--half at around 9% from Franklin Bank (our neighborhood bank) and half at 2% or so from the MCDA. This program helped us maintain our home in the Whittier neighborhood and the blended rate was something our small nonprofit budget could cope with. Thank you MCDA! Kelly O'Brien Kingfield HHM Board President
[Mpls] lawn signs
Please remember that most campaigns are run by volunteers who have regular jobs. I was still picking up signs on Saturday for Scott Dibble's campaign. For the most part, the campaigns want their signs back--they are expensive, and reusable. So please, have patience with us! Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
[Mpls] non-taxable property and nonprofits
David Strand wrote: "While the proximity of all these services add to therichness of city life, there is also alot of costborne by city residents and businesses to help covercosts of sidewalks and road maintenance and otherservices provided around and to these properties." As a point of fact, nonprofits must pay assessments on their property, even though they do not pay annual property taxes. I once tried to plead hardship for my nonprofit org to get out of sidewalk assessments, and the commission members looked at me like I was nuts. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
[Mpls] Minnehaha dog park
After sharing the story about the tragic death of Raj with my sister-in-law, she told me about the day two dogs went through the ice in the river. Their owners, in a panic, went running out onto the river ice after their dogs and they too went through the ice. Fortunately, quick thinking folks on shore brought all four back to safety. Minutes later, while everyone was recovering from the frenzy, my sister-in-law's dog, Eddie, ran out onto the ice and fell into the river. One of the wet guys from the first rescue volunteered to rescue Eddie, thank goodness. I hate to think of how many dogs have been lost to the river during winter (anyone know?). So let's ask the park board to not only install safety fencing along the cliff, but also consider barrier fencing along the riverfront during the winter months. Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
[Mpls] Minneapolis History
Shameless plug: I'm a member of the board of directors of the Hennepin History Museum (2303 3rd Ave S, www.hhmuseum.org) and I've been so happy to see the enthusiastic pursuit of Mpls history over the last couple of days. If you love local history like I do you should check out HHM and our quarterly publication, Hennepin History. You'll see lots of articles about neighborhood and city history, and back issues do include explanations of how streets (particularly the "first alphabet") got their names. We have a fabulous research archive too, which is a must-do if you are doing any research on your house or neighborhood (best real estate photo archive in town). Kelly O'Brien Kingfield
