Re: [mssms] Re: ADR for Office 365 updates keeps crashing SMSExec

2016-11-21 Thread Shane Alexander
Manual download of O365 updates was fine.

When the ADR (with same O365 updates) ran it wouldn't finish / wouldn't
download / caused the crash.

Some obviously had this issue before Nov. And that UR1 for v1606 doesn't
necessarily fix it.

One of the links below says something interesting.

"Problem solved! KB3159706 was installed on the SUP but not on the Primary
Site Server."
We've now installed that too, have set up a new ADR (same O365 update selection
criteria) to download to a new package, and let ADR kick off automatically ...
and it has downloaded both OK and no errors/crashes.

I noticed one of the O365 updates wouldn't download this month. Maybe that's
the problem ?

Same issue here.

Only seemed to start when the ADR ran this month. Last month was OK.
ConfigMgr is v1606 (not UR1). Other ADR's (without O365 updates selected) work
OK.

Did you get a fix ?

Some out there say it is fixed by UR1, but others on the same link say it
doesn't fix it.

Don't know if v1610 will fix it.

Got a weird one for you guys. I'm seeing when running an Automatic Deployment

Also, if you try the above script, you'll need to reboot once before it
takes effect (the same with any NIC changes in the OS). One reboot to apply
the change, then you can shut down and test.

Re: [mssms] RE: WOL not waking powered off computers

2016-11-21 Thread Ryan
Are they Intel NICs? If it is, does it have the WOL setting "Wake on Magic
Packet from Power Off" in advanced properties on the NIC?

http://www.ephingadmin.com/a-configmgr-admins-guide-to-wol-magic-part-two/

If not, and if it's an Intel NIC, you might want to try the registry hack I
have posted at that link to enable it. Here's the script I've run to enable
it on hundreds of Dell computers:

$Index = $null
$query = "select * from Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration Where IPEnabled =
'True'"
Get-WmiObject -Query $query | ForEach-Object {
$Index = $_.Index
if ($Index.Length -ne 4) {
do {
$Index = "0$Index"
} while ($Index.Length -lt 4)
}
Set-ItemProperty -Path
"HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\$Index"
-Name "EnablePME" -Value "1" -Type "String" -Force
}

No, that’s the problem. The NIC light is off. I’ve disabled deep sleep and

Ok so did you confirm if you can see the NIC led blinking when the machine is

I have various OptiPlex models and they all seem to work fine

I’ve disabled Deep sleep and enabled WOL option in BIOS

When machine is switched off and I plug in a network cable the led lights on
the nic…this is the first step in confirming that at the BIOS level you are on

Is the NIC On:

If there are no link lights on the back of the computer, where the network cord
is plugged in, then your NIC is probably not getting any power. Because of
this, it won’t be able to turn on the computer when packets are sent. Check
BIOS and / or Windows to see which is turning off the NIC. The next trick will
tell you how to narrow down which is causing the problem.

Is This A Windows Problem or BIOS Problem:

One interesting trick you can do is power off the computer, and then power it
back on going into BIOS. Sometimes, Windows turns the NIC off when the computer
is powered down, and this action will turn back on the NIC. Now, power off the
computer (make sure it doesn’t boot into Windows) and try to wake up the
computer. If it wakes up, and it never woke up before, you are probably looking
at a Windows setting problem or a driver bug. If it doesn’t wake up, check the
BIOS. make sure all the settings are correct, and if they are look into
updating or

I was replying to your statement of:

No they are saying Windows doesn’t support it. “This change is due to Microsoft
design changes in Windows 7 & Windows 8”

That's why I was saying WOL works on Windows 7, 8, and 10 from shutdown mode.
It wasn't in response to the article, it was in response to you.

The article states that newer Dell models are not supported to wake from
shutdown. At least that's how I interpret this:

The SHUTDOWN (S5)power state is not supported in Windows 7 and SHUTDOWN (S5)
and Hybrid SHUTDOWN (S4) power states are not supported in Windows 8 for
Wake-On-LAN. '

The annoying thing is it's up to the computer manufacturer to enable WOL from
S4 and S5. Microsoft doesn't support it because of how Windows works. In those
states, there's no Windows running to manage hardware devices to wake up the
machine. When it's in Sleep mode, Windows is still running in the background,
just a very low powered version. It watches for wake commands and then will
turn back on when it sees one.

If Dell had properly configured BIOS / drivers, it would work fine. Here's
Microsoft's support statement on it:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa373229(v=vs.85).aspx

Note WOL is not officially supported from soft off (S5). However, the BIOS on
some systems may support arming NICs for wake, even though Windows is not
involved in the process.

While I've worked with WOL, I've noticed some versions of drivers will
interrupt this process. If during shutdown the OS powers off the NIC, BIOS will
not always be able to turn the NIC back on after it's in S5. You need a driver
that stops Windows from turning off the NIC at shutdown. In my article, I
address this:

http://www.ephingadmin.com/a-configmgr-admins-guide-to-wol-magic-part-two/

If you are using an Intel NIC, there MAY be another setting there called Wake
on Magic Packet from power off state. This could also show up on the Power
Management tab. Enable this setting also to make sure you can wake up the
computer. This particular setting affects the computer when it is powered off,
not sleep mode. Windows can put the NIC in a low power mode when the computer
is shut down, and if it does you won’t be able to wake up the computer. From
what I’ve seen, most Intel NICs have this setting, but you don’t always see the
option in the properties of the NIC. If you don’t see it, you will need to
enable it in the registry. More on that below…

How are you sending the magic packet for your WOL tests?

I have a similar issue with the Dell 9020, if I send the magic packet from Win7
using the Cireson Remote Manage app, the 9020 does NOT wake up, if I send the
magic packet from a Win10 VM using the same version of the Cireson Remote
Manage app, the 9020 does wake up.

You can check if the computer is getting the packet by running a WOL packet
sniffer on it while it's on. Send the packet to the computer from the CM server
and see if it comes through. If it does, it's probably not a network problem.

[mssms] RE: Case statement for Windows Update Version / link

2016-11-21 Thread Daniel Ratliff
Not currently, most of what I gathered was from my own environment, and we
don't have a whole lot of those yet.

However, Win10 does list all updates here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12387/windows-10-update-history

So Win10 wouldn't be too hard to add.

Subject: [mssms] Case statement for Windows Update Version / link

Hello
Has anyone created a comprehensive (easy to read) list to identify the various
versions of the Windows Update Agent to the Month / Year / KB it was released
under?
As an example I have this -
7.6.7601.18804

7.6.7601.18847

7.6.7601.18917

7.6.7601.18937

7.6.7601.18979

7.6.7601.19016

7.6.7601.19046

7.6.7601.19077

7.6.7601.19116

7.6.7601.19161

7.6.7601.23435

7.6.7601.23453

A report shows ~75+ versions from
6.2.10240.16384
To
10.0.14393.351

Just don't want to look up each one individually (all my searching hasn't
yielded any good results) :(

Thanks

You can check if the computer is getting the packet by running a WOL packet
sniffer on it while it's on. Send the packet to the computer from the CM server
and see if it comes through. If it does, it's probably not a network problem.

If it doesn’t wake up, check the
BIOS. make sure all the settings are correct, and if they are look into
updating or downgrading the BIOS.

What about the BIOS trick I talked about?

Turn off the computer, boot into BIOS, then shut it down (this is important, if
it ever even starts loading Windows you have to restart the whole process).
Now, try to wake it. if it wakes up, it is an OS problem. If it doesn't wake
up, it may or may not be an OS problem, but I'd say start looking at upgrading
BIOS first.

You can check if the computer is getting the packet by running a WOL packet
sniffer on it while it's on. Send the packet to the computer from the CM server
and see if it comes through. If it does, it's probably not a network problem.

If it doesn’t wake up, check the
BIOS. make sure all the settings are correct, and if they are look into
updating or downgrading the BIOS.

7.6.7601.18804

7.6.7601.18917

7.6.7601.18937

7.6.7601.19161

7.6.7601.23435

A report shows ~75+ versions from
6.2.10240.16384

10.0.14393.351

Just don't want to look up each one individually (all my searching hasn't

You can check if the computer is getting the packet by running a WOL packet
sniffer on it while it's on. Send the packet to the computer from the CM server
and see if it comes through. If it does, it's probably not a network problem.

What about the BIOS trick I talked about?

Turn off the computer, boot into BIOS, then shut it down (this is
important, if it ever even starts loading Windows you have to restart the
whole process). Now, try to wake it. if it wakes up, it is an OS problem.
If it doesn't wake up, it may or may not be an OS problem, but I'd say
start looking at upgrading BIOS first.

If it doesn’t wake up, check the
BIOS. make sure all the settings are correct, and if they are look into
updating or downgrading the BIOS.

You can check if the computer is getting the packet by running a WOL packet
sniffer on it while it's on. Send the packet to the computer from the CM server
and see if it comes through. If it does, it's probably not a network problem.

OK, after working with our network team, WOL *does* work from CM, but only when

enabled. The article below suggests that disabling this might work, but it did
not. If the computer is fully powered off, it still will not wake. The article
also states:

These systems should wake from the System Power States: Sleep (S3) or Hibernate

We never got a fix, we opened a ticket with MS and they acknowledged that it is
a bug, and I have seen chatter about other people having problems with the ADR

I'm hoping v1610 does fix it though

Same issue here.

Only seemed to start when the ADR ran this month. Last month was OK.
ConfigMgr is v1606 (not UR1). Other ADR's (without O365 updates selected) work
OK.

Did you get a fix ?

Some out there say it is fixed by UR1, but others on the same link say it
doesn't fix it.

Don't know if v1610 will fix it.

Re: [mssms] Auto Client Upgrade

2016-11-21 Thread Stuart Watret
Until you complete the restart, the appropriate files are not in use, i.e. the
client will not be fully functional.

Hi All,
Quick question…. About client upgrade.
I have noticed that sometimes when a Client gets upgraded (at least when its
going from SCCM2012 client to 1606) the client installation ends with a
‘Reboot needed’
On Client OS that is enforced with the Computer settings countdown times so
that is not a problem, however for servers it creates a “reboot Pending” as its
not forcing it
How quickly do I have to ensure that the server is actually rebooted after the
client is installed ?
Or I guess what are the implications of not forcing the reboot to happen ?

2016-11-21 Thread Marcum, John
I noticed one of the O365 updates wouldn't download this month. Maybe that's
the problem ?

Same issue here.

Only seemed to start when the ADR ran this month. Last month was OK.
ConfigMgr is v1606 (not UR1). Other ADR's (without O365 updates selected) work
OK.

Did you get a fix ?

Some out there say it is fixed by UR1, but others on the same link say it
doesn't fix it.

Don't know if v1610 will fix it.

Got a weird one for you guys. I'm seeing when running an Automatic Deployment
Rule for Office 365 updates it keeps crashing SMSExec. Not seeing any errors
in any of the SCCM logs the only thing we can see is in the Application event
logs we see an application error with event ID 1000 with the following details:
