Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help removing tank on 1984 700S

The rubber mounts that hold the tank to the top tube may have corroded onto
the frame, and it feels stuck. Just ease the tank in a circular motion
until it starts to break free.

2021-11-22 Thread Kyle Munz
Once you've removed the bolt lift the back of the tank and slide it
backwards and it will come off. It's just resting on two rubber bushings at
the front.
The fuel line and vacuum line should be pretty apparent if you shine a
light on the petcock. Both are going down towards the carbs.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Help removing tank on 1984 700S

2021-11-22 Thread scott....@gmail.com
I need to change spark plugs on my 1984 700S and the dealer's parts counter
suggested removing the gas tank to get at the plugs underneath. I removed
the bolt at the base of the tank (near the seat), but the tank still seems
attached at the front of the bike.

The shop manual for the 700S says to also disconnect the fuel line at the
fuel valve, and the vacuum line at the intake pipe, but there aren't clear
pics showing where each is connected.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] HELP !!! Need Torque Specs to reassemble TOP END. PHOTOS INCLUDED!

2020-04-16 Thread Donny Ravioli
I just the top end on my '83 650.
As stated, there is no torque spec for these bolts in the service manual.
As they don't do much other than hold the plate down, I cranked them down
pretty good compared to the relatively low spec values for the rest of the
bolts. As long as you don't strip the thread your fine. Bolts holding
something down like the head, valve cover, or camshaft make sense to me to
use a torque wrench because you don't want any variation that could
asymmetrically squeeze two finely machined mating surfaces. But these
bolts? Who cares!

Hopefully I'm right. I've only ridden her for an hour since the job was
done. :)

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help! Had to take off the headlight - and started having some issues right away, HELP!

2018-08-01 Thread Jenya Spektor
Kyle,
The question that I have difficulty finding an answer to is the fact that
there are two LOOSE wires that do not match. I have one green and one
orange (steel with a plastic connect on the end of the orange one) that
don't seem to have any loose wires of the MATCHING color to connect to.
I'll try to make sense of the wiring diagram and will also post some images
of it here.
Best, Jenya

I'm guessing this is a 650? Either way it sounds like you may have pulled
something loose which could be shorting out now. Orange wires are typically
turn signals (along with light blue) and dark green is usually the ground.
Look up the Wiring Diagram for your bike from Paul's Nighthawk pages (
http://paulsnighthawkpages.blogspot.com/p/links.html) and you should be
able to hook it all back up.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Help! Had to take off the headlight - and started having some issues right away, HELP!

2018-08-01 Thread Jenya Spektor
So I just got a nice 1983 Nighthawk. Everything was working fine, but the
headlight housing was cracked - so I decided to fix it. Upon taking the
headlight out and disconnecting the 3-wire plug, I had noticed there was a
green and an orange wires that were not connected to anything. After fixing
the housing and putting the headlight back in, all sorts of things started
to happen -
1. Left turn signal started to blink rapidly
2. Left turn (rear) signal doesn't work at all
3. The bike did not start and the battery seemed to die within minutes.
I am just not sure what exactly happened - I did not tinker with anything
else. I might have pulled the front (headlight) harness a bit forward when
fixing the plastic housing (I had to undo the two bolts holding it
together), BUT that's about it. Also, the two loose wires - I am not sure
if they came apart while I was tinkering with things or not.
Need help!
Thanks in advance,
Jenya

Just my 2c, but if you're not equipped to do the work yourself and don't
happen to have a spare motor laying around I'd look for a running bike
instead.

I just looked at little closer at your pictures. Your ground wire in your
hand is what gets bolted on to the negative contact on your battery,
doesn't it? The other end just grounds to the frame.

As for the clip that holds the battery in, it is the same as the battery
bolts, or at least it has been on my Hondas. Give it a try. Then off to Ace

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help; Bolt missing for a ground. 1983 650 nighthawk

2016-07-21 Thread Tommy Hill
First of all, the bolt that holds the battery in is not really that important.
I always have mine, but you don't HAVE to have it. I am almost certain it is
the same as the battery post bolt.

Secondly, the ground wire does not go there. I can look when I get home, but
find another place to put it.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help, my bike lost all power

Can you get to the ign. Switch
And ck for power there

From: nighthawk_lovers@googlegroups.com
[mailto:nighthawk_lovers@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of EGrider
Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2016 4:08 AM
To: Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!
Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help, my bike lost all power

I joined the PC800 Yahoo group and "posted" this, but it never showed up. Maybe
it's held because I'm a new member. Anyway, I'll post it here, but it isn't
about a NH.

I took a Sunday ride on my ’90 PC800 before I left for Croatia. Stopped at a
gas station and the battery was so weak that I was lucky to have someone give
me a push start. I made it home, but I was praying all the way it would have
enough spark.

I was hoping the battery was bad, but Advance Auto Parts told me it was good.

Did a search of the archives on the PC800 group and on Google. Got some
diagnostics. Bought a decent VOM and rolled up my sleeves. Stator? R/R?

Got the battery halfway pulled out of the bike so that I could see the +
terminal. Cold voltage-OK. Voltage with ignition on-OK. Start bike, rev to 3–4K
for that check and I see sparks coming from the + terminal. OMG, shut off the
bike.

Why the &%# is there a prong on the + battery terminal connector that sticks
out past the edge of the battery? It poked out from the red protector and
evidently touched the frame. I wasn’t aware that it was there.

I moved the battery so that it no longer touched the frame and breathed a sigh
of relief that I got it shut off in time. Restarted the bike, or went to,
heard a snap or pop, and the bike went black. Figured OK, so I blew a fuse.

Checked all fuses (the ones in the fuse box on the left side and the main one
on the solenoid, if that = “all”) with a VOM. All are fine. Changed the main
30V with a new one just to be sure. Bike remains as dead as if it had no
battery at all.

Other than loading it on a trailer and taking it to a shop, can anyone tell me
how to begin to troubleshoot this thing? If a fuse is not blown, what did I
most likely damage?

What is my best course of action for tracking down what I did.

Once I get it so it lights up again, I can start trying to figure out why it
isn’t charging the battery… Any advice welcome.

I joined the PC800 Yahoo group and "posted" this, but it never showed up.
Maybe it's held because I'm a new member. Anyway, I'll post it here, but it
isn't about a NH.

I took a Sunday ride on my ’90 PC800 before I left for Croatia. Stopped at
a gas station and the battery was so weak that I was lucky to have someone
give me a push start. I made it home, but I was praying all the way it
would have enough spark.

I was hoping the battery was bad, but Advance Auto Parts told me it was
good.

Start bike, rev to
3–4K for that check and I see sparks coming from the + terminal. OMG, shut
off the bike.

Why the &%# is there a prong on the + battery terminal connector that
sticks out past the edge of the battery? It poked out from the red
protector and evidently touched the frame. I wasn’t aware that it was
there.

I moved the battery so that it no longer touched the frame and breathed a
sigh of relief that I got it shut off in time. Restarted the bike, or went
to, heard a snap or pop, and the bike went black. Figured OK, so I blew a
fuse.

Checked all fuses (the ones in the fuse box on the left side and the main
one on the solenoid, if that = “all”) with a VOM. All are fine. Changed the
main 30V with a new one just to be sure. Bike remains as dead as if it had
no battery at all.

Other than loading it on a trailer and taking it to a shop, can anyone tell
me how to begin to troubleshoot this thing? If a fuse is not blown, what
did I most likely damage?

What is my best course of action for tracking down what I did.

Once I get it so it lights up again, I can start trying to figure out why
it isn’t charging the battery… Any advice welcome.

You can remove it with the grab rail with those 4 bolts. Don't try to
remove the cowl from the grab rail though, take it all off as one unit. Or
as Richard mentioned, you can lower the fender liner and get to it that
way.

Any autoparts store should have a can of electric degreaser right next to
the can of dielectric grease. With the dielectric grease just smear a good
coating in there, the contacts will physically push it out of the way when
you plug them in. The dielectric is not conductive, the main point of it is
as a moisture barrier.

On the back of the bulb it isn't hard to get to, it's the dark green wire
but it runs through a dozen connections before actually grounding to the
frame. I can't tell you exactly where because my bike's DSPO got in there
with some duct tape and a bit of lamp cord. I would guess the stock
location is under the tank maybe. If you had a meter it's a quick
continuity test between the plug and the negative battery cable but that
may not help in your situation.

Ohms reading would be more informative, but it's the same basics.
Multimeter, stick one probe in the lamp ground, stick the other on the

They're different. 650 has plastic blade fuses and hangs off the front. The
700S uses glass fuses and is between the handlebars. Apart from an old fuse
falling apart I've never had an issue with the block on my 700S.The
connectors behind the headlight are a different story.

replace all. Remove fuse box (not in this order) and looked inside. Found a
dead spider and cocoon looking web. All other wires looked fine! Put it back

Thanks again. All.

Still would like to know what each circuit/fuse goes to but will replace in the

The 650 has glass fuses and does sit up front behind the horns. But it is
the brown plastic bulkhead plugs that attach to the mess of brass bars in
the back of the unit that are the problem IMHO. Along with the fuse holders
snapping from corrosion and vibration.

You may have a bad ground on the headlight which is why both high and low went
at the same time.
With the fuses - were they pulled while the power was on? They could have
popped when you pushed the fuse back in.
If you are umm... Confident... That there are no shorts, then you can jump the
fuse until you get home. Not recommend of course. It is impossible to know for
sure without using a meter.

You have a 650? The plugs on the back of the fuse block can come loose,
also a fuse can look good but still be bad. You really need a multimeter to
test them. Also check the right hand controls and your ground wires.

And the no- start. If your ignition still has power, you can always pop the
clutch just like in a car. It can get hairy, but if you are in a pinch... Don't
drop the bike when your doing it. Straddle the seat and get it rolling
downhill. Then pick you feet up, put in first gear and release the clutch. This
will spin the engine. Then pull the clutch back in just like when you release
the start button. Then you can proceed as normal.

The starter button disables the headlight when pressed and starting the
motor, but that's just a guess. Push starting can work without the hill but
it ain't fun, especially in Florida heat, and you'll look ridiculous while
pushing it. Put it in 2nd, pull in the clutch, run as fast as you can, jump
onto the seat without falling over or dropping the bike and pop the clutch.
If it catches pull the clutch back in before it stalls.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Help me plan my next motorcycle trip

2015-06-21 Thread James O'Gorman
The salt flats are west of Salt Lake City, right on the border of Utah/Nevada.
It is only a couple hours out of SLC. If you've never been there I would
recommend it. There were some smaller roads the go north from there to connect
back (eventually) to Ontario, OR.
Those roads are quite desolate but very neat. Anyone is able to just drive out
on the salt and putz around.

Unfortunately Ol' Yeller's headlight went on strike again tonight as I was
riding home from work. Not sure what to do about that as I'll definitely need
a headlight on the trip, if only for getting back to the motel after dinner.
It's sure to come on intermittently during the trip; maybe I'll just rig a
hotwire off the battery for emergencies. Too late to buy something else I
could trust for a trip like this short of a new bike, or at least it feels
like it to me, Dang! Headlight issue is creating a love/hate relationship
 with my NH.

I have a 2006 Suzuki S50 that would fit the bill, except no FI. Added perk is
this is a machine the wife can ride so it is an easy sell. You can both ride
together!!

Let me know if you are interested. It is a shaft drive and low miles. It is
also known as the VS800 Intruder.

From what you describe the PC800 sounds about right for you. I agree that a
FI system will be just perfect, but the storage in those things is insane,
and they are nice to ride. I think they are perfect for city riding.

Tell the wife you could never sell the NH because of the many memories of
the two of you together with the bike, etc etc... The other option is to
say yes, I will sell it, and post it on CL for $8k or so. If you do sell it
for that much at least you won't regret it :)

Most riding is in and around town, so a really big bike won't be fun.
Need to be able to sit on it for a tank of gas (a while).
The NH has plenty of power for anything I have ever wanted to do, and it

Oh, and finally. How do I convince my wife that I should keep the NH AND a

Your lights can still cone on even if the battery isn't strong enough to start
it. The first step is always to check the battery and make sure it's 12.7 V? or
above. I suggest getting a voltmeter and battery maintainer. You will def need
the maintainer( aka trickle charger/float charger)

works great. Trying to figure out asap since this is my only means of
transportation. Any help or tips on what i should look at would be very
 greatly appreciated!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Help I need a stator

2015-03-09 Thread nythawk night
Hello fellow Hawkers,
I am desperate. I have an 86 Nighthawk cb450sc. I was told by my dealer
my stator is bad. Unfortunately Honda doesn't make them anymore. I have
tried for four weeks to find a working one with no success. I have looked
on ebay, I have called and emailed several online suppliers, I emailed a
company called CMSNL in the Netherlands and they don't return my emails and
I can't afford to call them. I finally located one at Steve's Cycle Salvage
in Tifton, Georgia. and my local Honda dealer checked it out and said it
was way out of specs, whatever that means. If it's out of specs can it be
adjusted to work? Does anyone know if a stator can be repaired and if so is
there anywhere online that does it or can you buy a kit? Or does anyone no
where I can get a used one that will work or a new one? Could the dealer be
wrong and could it be something else electrical that made it look like the
stator is bad? If I can't get it fixed I will have to part it out which I
don't want to do. Any help would be much appreciated.
   Thank you,
   Brian

I've bought electrical components from Rick's before which worked fine for
me. He lists the stator for your bike but it isn't cheap and requires a
core deposit to get started.

I've bought electric parts from Rick's before that worked just fine. Most
of them are reconditioned, but very clean.

stator repair kit which I may try. The worst part about rebuilding one is
removing the dry epoxy There is also a lot of info on the web on how to
repair them so I may have to try that way. If I can't get this one
repaired or find a used or rebuilt one then I'll I have to sell the bike
for parts. If anyone knows a workaround for this problem I would appreciate
it. It's a shame to because the bike has only 7,000 miles on it and other
than the stator and a scratch on the gas tank and battery cover it's in
near mint condition. Any suggestions/help on this matter would be greatly

Once you get into the panel carefully pull the tach needle straight off the
shaft, then you can hold the magnet behind the speedo needle and unscrew the
needle!

Good idea. When/if I ever get this bike home, I will do that and replace the
tach needle and fuel needle.

The lens is not nearly as bad as it looks in this pic though.

Wow! That looks great for a 40 year old dash. Good job.

Maybe a little McGuire's #10 Clear Acrylic Polish would make all of your
clear/acrylic lenses look brand new,
and therefore your speedo needle and old tach needle VISIBLE again!?!?
