Yes, you're right; if I copy these two files over, I don't get these

[NTG-context] transparent colors in latest beta

Hi Hans,

the bad news is that transparent colors don't work at all in the latest
beta with mkiv (they worked on and off with the beta before that). The
good
news is that this makes it easier to build a minimal example :-) Here
comes:

\setupcolors[state=start]

\starttext

\startuseMPgraphic{test}
pair a, b, c, d ;
a = (0,0) ; b = (0,5cm) ; c = (5cm,5cm) ; d = (5cm,0) ;
path p ; p = a -- b -- c -- d -- cycle ;
draw a -- c withcolor black ;
fill p withcolor transparent (1,0.25,red) ;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\useMPgraphic{test}

\stoptext

OK, just one more detail before I leave: I get proper hyphenation with
luatex version 0.35.0 and ConTeXt version 2009.02.24 (had this older

Your script is clever, but in my experience, you can simplify the
process. I have a TeXLive install and the ConTeXt minimals on my OS X
box. In order to use them, I have two configuration files. Here's the
one for the minimals (which is named .minicontext):

PATH=/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin:$PATH
export PATH
export TEXMFCACHE=/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-cache
export TEXMFCNF=/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf/web2c

Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-context,/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-
extra,/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf}
export LUAINPUTS={/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/
context/lua,/Users/tas/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base,/
Users/tas/texmf/scripts/context/lua}

I simply run source ~/.minicontext, and my system is set up. The
syntax is for zsh; if you're running bash or (heaven forbid!) tcsh,
you may have to adapt it slightly; and of course, adapt the path
variables to your own needs.

[NTG-context] New module simpleslides

2009-03-31 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz

Dear list members,

We're happy to announce the initial release of the simpleslides
module. It has taken us somewhat longer than we anticipated, but now
it's there! simpleslides is a module that facilitates the creation of
presentations in ConTeXt. It provides a few macros to position titles,
text, and images on slides, some typescripts to make use of
LatinModern and the TeXGyre fonts, and a few pre-defined styles that
should make your presentations visually appealing.

We guarantee that this release is absolutely bug-free; whoever finds a
bug has the inalienable right to buy us a beer at the next ConTeXt
meeting! Seriously: we are aware that some things are not working as
expected. Our biggest and most embarrassing problem for the time being
is that the module refuses to work with XeTeX. Neither of us uses
XeTeX on a regular basis, and we're not familiar with its innards, so
we're at a loss here. If you can offer help, you will be most welcome!

We would of course welcome feedback, bug reports, feature suggestions,
etc., so download the module at http://modules.contextgarden.net/module/detail?name=simpleslides
 and give it a whirl!

[NTG-context] latext beta + xetex

you're on the right track; just two or three small corrections, and

texnansi-AVENI23 Avenir-Oblique 4AVENI23.ttf texnansi.enc

I'm not sure if you can have a space after the

\starttypescript [map] [avenir] [textansi]
 \loadmapfile [texnansi-adobe-avenir.map]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript [sans] [avenir] [texnansi]

  \definefontsynonym [SansBoldItalic] [Avenir-HeavyOblique]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript [Avenir]
  \definetypeface [Avenir] [rm] [sans] [avenir] [default]
\stoptypescript

Two things here: you're defining a sans font, so change [rm] into
[ss]. And for mkii (old-fashioned pdftex), I think you'll need to add
the encoding to the typescript:

\starttypescript [Avenir] [texnansi]
  \definetypeface [Avenir] [ss] [sans] [avenir] [default]
[encoding=texnansi]

\stoptypescript

When I try to use my typescript in my environment file like this:

\usetypescriptfile[type-adobe-avenir]
\usetypescript[Avenir]
\setupbodyfont[Avenir,10pt]

Yes, you have defined a sans font, but you're not setting sans as your
bodyfont. ConTeXt defaults to serif (i.e. rm), and since your
typescript doesn't define a rm font, it defaults to latin modern. So
simply write:

\setupbodyfont[Avenir,ss,10pt]

HTH

So now we know it's a problem with 10.4, regardless of the
architecture. We need someone on 10.4 to compile and commit the
binaries for the minimals. So Willi, Hraban, you should try and look
at this page on the wiki: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/Implementation
 You'll need svn access in order to commit the binaries, but I'm sure
Patrick will be happy to grant that (if you hand him a sufficient
bribe...). Most of us are running 10.5, so we can't reproduce the
problem.

Currently, there is no such feature. Are you looking at the
functionality of the arcs package of latex? If so, it will be easy
to add it to ConTeXt. The main trouble is that the glyph for
\overarc is missing from the fonts. Arcs.sty takes the glyphs for
\frown and \smile, and scales them appropriately. An ugly solution,
but it looks ok if you are just placing it over one or two letters.

I had a similar wish a while ago and hacked something with a
MPpositiongraphic. It is certainly not very elegant, but IMHO better
than the LaTeX code you posted (scaling a glyph like that will look
ugly when you want to span more than just two letters). Wolfgang
Schuster supplied the neat trick with the counter. It is quite fast
when run with mkiv, but I suspect would be slow with mkii (and leave
quite a few .mp files behind). Maybe this can help:

\newcount\arcnumber

\startMPpositiongraphic{placeoverarc}
 StartPage ;
 begingroup ;
 initialize_box(\MPpos{\MPvar{self}}) ;
 numeric c ; c = ExHeight/6 ;
 z1 = llxy ;
 z2 = lrxy ;
 z7 = 1/2[z1,z2] ;
 z4 = ((x1 + 2*c), (y1 + 2*c)) ;
 z5 = (x7, (y7 + 4*c)) ;
 z6 = ((x2 - 2*c), (y2 + 2*c)) ;
 path syn ; syn := z4 .. z5 .. z6 ;
 pickup pencircle scaled (0.75*c) ;
 draw syn ;
 anchor_box(\MPanchor{\MPvar{self}}) ;
 endgroup ;
 save c ;
 StopPage ;
\stopMPpositiongraphic%

\define[1]\overarc
{\advance\arcnumber\plusone%
 \setMPpositiongraphic{POS-\number\arcnumber}{placeoverarc}%
 \hpos{POS-\number\arcnumber}{#1}}

Maybe that can be the starting point for some better code...

Why should it? Look at the variable TEXINPUTS in texmf.cnf. In TL2008:

TEXINPUTS.tex   = .;$TEXMF/tex/{plain,generic,}//

So: the current directory + the texmf-trees. Letting it climb the

betas are in a flux this week. If you don't have access to the most
recent luatex binary, just wait for a couple of days till things have
settled down.

\localgreek{'alfa ka`i b~hta}

B. As I had written before, this will not work with mkiv. ASCII input
is mkii only.

I'm aware we have made you install lots of versions, in vain.
Nevertheless, I would suggest trying the current beta version. It is
broken wrt mkiv, but you are still using mkii, right? So from my
earlier mail:

mkdir ~/alphaminimal  cd ~/alphaminimal

rsync -ptv rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/setup/first-setup.sh .

./first-setup.sh --context=alpha

You will get errors when the installation tries to create the luatex
formats; just ignore them; mkii should be fine. At least, that's what
I used here to produce the pdf. Be sure to adapt your environment
variables and $PATH so you use this new version, not the older ones on

This is a problem we discussed in Bohinj, and it's good that you
remind us of its existence - we need to take a decision about this.
The file which defines the texmf-paths for the minimals on Unixoid
systems is ~/context/tex/setuptex. If you look into it, you'll see on
l. 143

export HOMETEXMF=/nonexist

Hans explained that he didn't want to have HOMETEXMF set on his
machine. Unfortunately, many users will expect HOMETEXMF to work with
the minimal installation. The normal place for it is ~/texmf (Alan,
you should move it out of ~/Library). So what can we do? Hans, is
there any workaround for you? Most users will be as baffled as Alan
when the stuff they have installed in their personal trees isn't
found. Personally, I have set up all my stuff in a
personal .miniluatex file which I source whenever I want to run
context, but I don't know how this would work with TeXShop. IMHO, the
normal ~/texmf should be included out of the box. What do others think
- Mojca?

thanks a lot for your replies! Luigi: I had a look at python lxml; it
looks very powerful and interesting, and I will try and see if can
make use of it. Why do you translate your xml sources into tex instead
of using the mkiv mechanism for processing xml, is it because of speed?

Khaled: I have to see if I can tweak the OpenOffice docbook converter
to keep more of the formatting; in its default state, it drops too
much important stuff...

Right now, I have followed Patrick's advice. I've installed saxon9 and
am writing a xslt stylesheet to translate the openoffice xml into a
cleaner and easier to handle format. I'm making progress... Maybe we
should put something like this on the wiki and make it a collaborative
effort - I can only write rules for stuff that occurs in my documents,
and that is of course only a subset of what OpenOffice has, so it
would be good to add rules as people find interesting features.

[NTG-context] question for the xml-experts

2009-02-14 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz

Hi all,

this is not a question about direct technical details, but more of a
conceptual problem, and I would love to have your input and ideas on
this. I will be editing several edited volumes in my field
(humanities, classics). From experience, I know that it's impossible
to make scholars in the humanities adhere to standards. Each and every
one of them will turn in a paper (most of them written in half a dozen
different versions of Word) with its own idiosyncracies. At my last
conference, I asked them to please use Unicode for their Greek
passages, and I got blank looks and the question What the hell is
Unicode?

So: I want to extract the content of these papers and process it with
ConTeXt. I thought the easiest route might be convert them to
OpenOffice odt and then use the content.xml as a starting point. Since
the formatting will be unusable anyways, it doesn't make sense to
process the odt directly; instead, I want to transform the xml via
xslt to a simplified format and then process that with ConTeXt. I have
just discovered the tool xalan ( http://xml.apache.org/xalan-c/index.html
 ) which allows me to use an xslt style sheet and direct the output
to a new file. I will then need to clean up these xml files and write
a mkiv xml setup for them.

So for those who know much more about this sort of workflow: does that
make sense? Is there any better way to achieve these results, i.e.,
have the content of a couple of papers in Word and/or rtf format and
typeset it in a consistent ConTeXt environment? Is there any tool
better than xslt to convert the OpenOffice xml than xslt (anything in
lua that can parse xml)? Anything better than xalan to convert xm -
xml? I'm just beginning to plan this, so I'd be most grateful for any
pointers.

Thanks for reading this long message, all best

Hi,

with the latest beta of this morning and the latest luatex, a call like

texexec --lua --env=mystyle myfile.xml

fails, the environment file is not read (there is no error about not

OK, one problem is math support. Here's a minimal file that compiles
with 2009.01.18 and fails with 2009.02.04:

so it's older, and it does have the lpeg.Ca pattern accumulator.

And can I ask one more question about lpeg? Suppose I have the string

Re: [NTG-context] installing fonts pdftex

On Jan 27, 2009, at 12:28 AM, Mohamed Bana wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Hi,

please address questions to the mailing-list, not to me personally.

1. when is the last time you tried to install a font manually using
texfont? i've been trying to get install warnockpro and cronospro -
both of which are .otf - but i've had no lack.

texfont --makepath --install --fontroot=`pwd` --vendor=adobe --
co=warnockpro --en=texnansi --lcdf --preproc --
variant=liga,kern,smcp,onum

the last time i checked texfont was generating an empty map file.

texfont is really old, it predates opentype fonts, so you can't expect
it to handle such fonts. It was a brave and wonderful effort to
automate installation of fonts, but I gave up using it - not because
texfont itself is bad, but because so many fonts are just faulty and/
or idiosyncratic, and automatization just can't handle all these
eceptions. I always had to double-check and edit files by hand, so I
decided to go for a manual process. The --lcdf switch was added by
Adam Lindsay, who also wrote a short article about otf and ConTeXt: http://www.tug.org/pracjourn/2005-2/lindsay/lindsay.pdf
 Too bad Adam isn't active anymore, he was a great help in ConTeXt
development. If you search the mailing list archive for texfont
lcdf, you will see that the problem with the empty map file is common
and was never really solved, AFAIK.

So you have several options:

1. install the fonts manually

2. use texfont and write the map file manually

3. try Patrick's otfinst http://wiki.contextgarden.net/otfinst

4. I have a set of support files for using Cronos and Warnock with
pdftex; if you want, I can make a zip and send them to you (not before
Thursday, however).

the free version of lucida (.ttf) that ship with Java files worked
fine

2. is there someone i must do to get to dashes working properly? as
in, --- doesn't generate the right dash nor does --.

These are defined as ligatures in the tfm/vf files. Doesn't texfont
produce vpl-files as an intermediate format? You could open those and
check whether the ligature is defined. It probably isn't, and then you
have to hunt down the reason or add it manually...

Good luck

2. How can I check if a string begins with a class of words (Der |

do it with a compiled regexp in python, but Programming in lua
has this to say: Unlike some other systems, in Lua a modifier can
only be applied to a character class; there is no way to group
patterns under a modifier. For instance, there is no pattern that
matches an optional word (unless the word has only one letter).
Usually you can circumvent this limitation using some of the
advanced techniques that we will see later. I haven't found these
techniques yet.

local stripped = {
   Der, Die, Das
}

local p = lpeg.P(false)

for k, v in ipairs(stripped) do
   p = p + lpeg.P(v)
end

local w = p *

local stripper = lpeg.Cs(((w/) + lpeg.C(1))^0)

lpeg.print(stripper)

str = Germans somehow always talk about Der Thomas and Der Hans

print(stripper:match(str))

Brilliant again! I can run with that, looks great! And who doesn't
want a local stripper in his code?

3. How can I compare strings with utf8 characters? My naive approach
  if string.find(record, Résumé)
doesn't appear to work (while the same method does work if the
string has only ASCII characters).

since lua is 8 bit clean utf should just work

OK, then the problem must be somewhere else. I'll investigate.

[NTG-context] lua questions

2009-01-22 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz

Hi all,

this is a bit OT and should probably go to a lua list, but since some
people here are very proficient in lua and I feel less embarrassed
about noob questions here... I have a half-functioning python script
to convert entries from a classics database into the bibtex format. I
want to rewrite it in lua and make it more functional. Three little
problems/questions:

1. I found a script to convert Roman numerals via lpeg here: http://lua-users.org/wiki/LpegRecipes
 but it uses the syntax lpeg.Ca which my lpeg doesn't recognize and
which I can't find in the lpeg manual. According to a talk by Roberto
Ierusalimschy, lpeg.Ca(patt) - accumulates the nested captures. (http://www.inf.puc-rio.br/~roberto/lpeg/slides-lpeg-workshop2008.pdf
) Is this obsolete, has it been replaced by anything?

2. How can I check if a string begins with a class of words (Der |Die
|Das |The |An ) etc. and strip these words from the string? I do it
with a compiled regexp in python, but Programming in lua has this to

If you want to use this font with mkii, you'll need much more than
