[nysbirds-l] Chimney Swift @ Goldens Bridge NY (6 November)

2013-11-07 Thread Arthur W. Green
Yesterday, I was surprised to hear a Chimney Swift over the North County
Shopping Center in Goldens Bridge (Region 9) at ~15:40 EST.
Unfortunately, I was not able to get a glimpse of the bird (even against
the overcast sky), but the flight call was unmistakeable.

[nysbirds-l] Short-eared Owl @ Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, 23 Oct 2013

2013-10-23 Thread Arthur W. Green
Today, a Short-eared Owl was observed flying at very casual height above
the tree canopy ~1 km south of the watch platform at Chestnut Ridge
Hawkwatch--just outside Mount Kisco, Region 9. The owl was intensively
harrassed by 2 Common Raven while 2 American Crow waited on the wing
nearby and tracked the trio as they exited WSW at 9:20 EST.

[nysbirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk @ Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, 15 Oct 2013

2013-10-15 Thread Arthur W. Green
Today, an adult Broad-winged Hawk was observed near the tail of a stream
of 55 Turkey Vulture that were passing directly over the watch platform
at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch--located just outside Mount Kisco (Region

undetectable without a binocular, and would have been too easy to miss
had it opted to go it alone. Fortunately (for us), it didn't.

[nysbirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker @ CRHW, 6 Sep 2013

2013-09-06 Thread Arthur W. Green
This (Friday) afternoon, an adult Red-headed Woodpecker was observed
flying at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, Bedford Corners NY (just outside the
city/township limits of Mount Kisco--Region 9). The bird crossed in
front of our east view just below eye level approximately 15 meters from
the watch platform, where the diagnostic head and bold wing pattern
could be seen with ease. RWHO seems to be an occasional visitor to our
hawkwatch in fall (typically September).

[nysbirds-l] Chimney Swift @ Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, 10/23

2010-10-24 Thread Arthur W. Green
I had a Chimney Swift come through yesterday afternoon (Oct 23). It
flew no more than 100 or 150 feet above the treeline and exited due
south of our hawkwatch platform. I'm sure this occurrence is not an
"extreme" date by any measure, but it seems a tad late. Has anyone
else observed swifts over the past few days?

Re:[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawk @ Chestnut Ridge, 8/25

2010-08-27 Thread Arthur W. Green
There were no large kettles yesterday (August 26) at Chestnut Ridge as
there were on Wednesday, but the tally was certainly greater: ~183
Common Nighthawk. Only 31 of those were counted before 16:00 EST; the
majority were spotted between 16:00 to 17:30. Most of the flocks we
saw were northbound. In the last minutes of our count, however, some
began exiting from view to the south (and, to a lesser degree, to the
west), so I cannot rule out that a couple of these birds were
double-counted.

Kindly Yours,
\\ Arthur

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawk @ Chestnut Ridge, 8/25

2010-08-25 Thread Arthur W. Green
I intended to run my binocular across the dark, overcast sky one last
time before closing the day's count at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch,
located just outside of Mount Kisco. Instead, under a very light
westerly wind at 15:59 (EST), I came away with a cluster of birds due
east of the watch platform flying only a few hundred feet above the
ridge tops. For just a second, I assumed it was a late day movement
of Broad-winged Hawk piling up in a thermal; after I shook myself from
my late-day stupor, I could see plainly that it was a veritable kettle
of Common Nighthawk! 46 of them. Within minutes these birds began
heading north, streaming out in twos and threes until they were
nowhere to be seen.

At 16:11, I spied at least 20 more nighthawk southeast of the watch
platform blinking out of the haze at the reaches of visibility near
the Long Island Sound. I could not tell which direction they were
headed, nor was I able to count all of them before they disappeared
from view.

At 16:27, two nighthawk passed along a similar flight line as the
first larger kettle. These were the final birds I observed before I
finally went home at 17:00. Including the individual I observed late
AM, the total for today is at least 69 Common Nighthawk. An exciting
cap to a trying day!

My colleague, Tait Johansson, had observed a flock of 19 nighthawks
south of the platform on August 17 at ~17:30, spotting another
individual north of the platform around the same time. We see
nighthawks each year at Chestnut Ridge in early fall, and I regret
that the timing of our coverage probably does not account for the
actual number of nighthawk that travel within viewing distance of the
platform.

[nysbirds-l] Bobolink @ Muscoot Farm, 5/16

2010-05-16 Thread Arthur W. Green
A pleasant bird walk at Muscoot Farm was made particularly memorable
when our group flushed a flock of ~35 Bobolink out of the grasses of
the Pumpkin Field, due north of the farm proper, at about 9:25 this
morning. There was a tendency by the birds to form two discrete
flocks of equal size and composition by sex; whether some of these
pairs will choose to nest here (as they did several years ago) remains
to be seen. Muscoot, better known for its farm animals, is probably
underrated as a birding destination in Westchester County.

Steve, this is terrific. I'm not sure every FOS needs to be posted to
this list, but I often wish more attention was paid to the common
species. Most birds are interesting when studied closely enough. . .

[nysbirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk and Short-eared Owl @ Shawangunk Grasslands, 3/2

2010-03-02 Thread Arthur W. Green
I spotted five Rough-legged Hawks (3 dark morphs, 2 light) and five
Short-eared Owls during my mid/late afternoon visit to the Shawangunk
Grasslands today. At least twice as many owls were reported just
recently, but with NE winds and the wet snow covering the landscape, I
was still blessed with the best seat in the house standing at the
eastern end of one airstrip: directly above me, two owls engaged one
another concerning a Meadow Vole that had been caught minutes before
the encounter. Indeed, standing still enough, I found that any of the
hunting owls would routinely fly close enough at eye level to make the
spotting scope unnecessary. Quite a show!! The height of activity
for both the rough-leggeds and the owls were seemingly in lockstep
with the crows traveling to roost, so perhaps the cloud cover
thickening in advance of sunset proper played a hand here.

[nysbirds-l] Sizable AMRO Flight @ Chestnut Ridge, 11/2

2009-11-02 Thread Arthur W. Green
I had the pleasure of watching much commotion by American Robin this
morning just outside of Mount Kisco at the Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch.
Numerous flocks, many ranging in size from fifty to several hundred
birds apiece, passed within a mile of the watch platform from ~9:05 to
~11:20; by noon, literally thousands of birds had graced my view in a
span of time barely exceeding two hours. The direction that flocks
flew in seemed to change repeatedly and had no pattern I could
discern; flocks seemed as likely to exit S as they were to fly N or E.
By early afternoon, the commotion had died down, and there was hardly
a robin to be seen or heard over the din of I-684. . .

[nysbirds-l] Franklin Mountain Lecture, Nov. 3

2009-11-02 Thread Arthur W. Green
Dear NYSBirds-L,

Tuesday evening (11/3), Andy Mason, whose affiliation with NYSOA needs
no introduction, will be giving a talk about the Franklin Mountain
Hawkwatch in Oneonta, a site he founded and co-coordinates (with Tom
Salo) for the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society. The talk will be given
in Westmoreland Sanctuary's museum at 7 p.m. It promises to be a
terrific program, and the lecture accompanies the field trip to
Franklin Mountain that is being offered by both Saw Mill River Audubon
and the Bedford Audubon Society the following Wednesday (11/11).

Westmoreland Sanctuary is located at 260 Chestnut Ridge Rd, Mount
Kisco. There is no fee, but if you decide to come please call
Westmoreland Sanctuary at 914.666.8448 to let them know you are
attending. I hope you can join us!

With Kind Regards,

[nysbirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk @ Chestnut Ridge, 11/1

2009-11-02 Thread Arthur W. Green
A Rough-legged Hawk was spotted just outside of Mount Kisco at the
Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch. This juvenile "light morph" bird was quite
high and heading WSW, streaming out almost directly over the watch
platform at 14:48. I thought it interesting that several Red-tailed
Hawk spotted around the same time used a nearly identical flight line.
